Making It As A Manager There are no normal days in the music industry. But imagine becoming a manager while in law school.

That’s the life of Town of Oyster Bay resident Rachel Feigelson, who created Rocksam Management and Consulting as she began to attend Southwestern Law School. The startup firm is now the home of several stars, including Taylor Dayne, who has a new single coming out called “Please.”

But it’s no easy task for this law student to focus on both school and managing at the same time.

“I decided I wanted to go to law school, but I would take a gap year and work at a talent agency,” she said.

That didn’t happen. Instead, she created Rocksam, which has landed Feigelson on several top lists, including Yahoo! Finance’s “top entrepreneurs of 2020 who have disrupted the status quo.”

School Districts Announce Plans For Potential Fall Reopening

eptember will be here before we know it and with that local schools around the island are grappling with the idea of whether or not to reopen amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, many local colleges, such as Adelphi University and Hofstra University, are planning to reopen their campuses this fall, but with new stringent protocols that include social distancing and classroom occupancy restrictions. Meanwhile, neighboring states like Connecticut and New Jersey recently announced that they have plans to reopen their schools this fall, but will New York follow suit? Anton Media Group reached out to school districts across Nassau County and asked superintendents whether or not parents, students and teachers should prepare to head back to the classroom this fall.

The Garden City School District is getting everything in order for a possible reopening and will keep safety its number one priority.

“As we plan for reopening in September, our goal is to have our students in our classrooms,” Garden City Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kusum Sinha said. “Any opening will happen in a way that places safety first.

While we await guidance from the New York State Education Department and the governor’s office, we are working on three scenarios, which include complete in-person learning, blended learning and remote learning.

We will be prepared to implement any of the three options depending on the directions we receive from the state.

The district has developed a task force that consists of various stakeholders including teachers, administrators, healthcare providers, parents and board members, which will continue to meet until plans are in place for September. We also sent out a survey to parents seeking their input, and a virtual parent meeting to address questions and concerns on reopening is being scheduled for mid-July.”

Great Neck Eyes New Village Hall

H

istory has passed the Great Neck Village Hall by.

The structure, gifted to the town by the Baker family to use as its municipal building, has outlived its usefulness as a municipal headquarters, according to village leaders.

County records indicate that portions of the structure at 61 Baker Hill Rd. date back to 1838.

The village’s board of trustees authorized Mayor Pedram Bral to purchase a vacant plot to construct a new village hall.

When that is completed, the old village hall will then be sold to the Great Neck school district, which has expressed a wish to acquire the one-acre parcel its property surrounds on three sides.

The resolution, passed at the June 16 trustees’ meeting, will enable the village to buy a 79-by-123-foot lot at 756 middle Neck Rd. currently owned

by Nexgen Properties LLC of Lake Success.

Once a private residence, it was later converted to commercial space and has recently been demolished.

A municipal parking lot adjoins the property and can satisfy the parking requirements, according to the mayor.

Peter Bee, the attorney for the village, noted at the meeting that “this board has from time to time discussed the need for a new village hall.”

One of the resolutions before the board declared that the sale would have a negative impact for purposes of the state’s Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA).

“The proposal to go ahead and build a [new] village hall would require an entirely different SEQRA analysis,” Bee observed.

The purchase price for the lot will be $800,000.

Bral said the price was “fair and reasonable.” The assessed value was higher, he added, but the village was able to negotiate a lower price because of the various restrictions and conditions in the sale agreement.

These include the proviso that the village must use the property exclusively for a village hall for a period of 25 years. Further, it cannot sell the parcel to the adjoining property to the north for a period of 50 years and for the same amount of time it cannot be used for residential purposes.

He added, “It’s a very old building with old pipes and no elevator. It’s a better move to move it to a new place.”

The current village hall property has not been assessed of late, Bral stated, though a few years ago it was determined to have a value in excess of $2 million.

As far as the cost of land purchase and building construction, it should not present a burden to the village, the mayor affirmed.

“We are doing very well financially,” he said. “We do have enough reserves and we also money in the community benefit fund. Financially, there is not going to be an issue.”

Though he admitted that the pandemic will impact the village’s revenues, Bral said that, “in the past five years, we have done amazingly well in the financials. I have not raised taxes for the last four years. Despite that, we’re doing very well financially.”

Resident Jean Pierce is a critic of the proposed sale of the current village hall and spending money to erect a new one.

“It needs modernizing,” she acknowledged. “Why don’t we spend money on modernizing the building?

Pierce mentioned Breezy Hill, a memoir by Mills Baker of growing up on the farm. His family gave the name

Bral acknowledged that there were critics of the village’s plans, but he’s also heard from supporters.

“It’s not set up to be a proper village hall,” he said of the current municipal headquarters. “The new one is going to be beautiful and more in the center of our village.”

Bridge Replacements Become Routine

There is now a new structure spanning Glen Cove Road in Carle Place.

The MTA and its contractors removed the old bridge over the major north-south artery, which was built 78 years ago, and replaced it from June 26 to 29 with a span containing a third bay for the planned track expansion.

The structure is part of the 9.8-mile Third Track Expansion Project, a multi-billion dollar modernization of the Long Island Rail Road’s main line between Floral Park and Hicksville.

Bridge replacements and grade crossing eliminations are among its notable features.

Tom McGuinness, the MTA’s deputy project executive, told Anton Media Group that contractor 3TC used the Macy’s Furniture Clearance Center’s parking lot, adjacent to the railroad property, to erect the new bridge.

Rigging for its specialized equipment to handle the heavy lifting. Rigs removed the old bridge and placed the new one on the expanded abutments.

Supor’s equipment also carried the old bridge to the parking lot to be

demolished.

Paul Gaspar, a director at Supor, said the rigs had a lifting/carrying capacity of 900 tons. The company has helped replace two other bridges during the project.

McGuinness said that, per the contract, one track had to be ready for train service by 2:27 a.m., the other by 5:20 a.m. on June 29. Both targets were met and regular service—interrupted Friday evening—resumed.

The project executive affirmed that closing Glen Cove Road, the busiest artery crossing the project’s length, “was probably more challenging than technically moving the bridge.”

He praised Nassau County and its police department for providing around-the-clock traffic control efforts. South to Old Country Road and north to Westbury Avenue, he noted, only local traffic was allowed, in order for customers to patronize the businesses lining the road.

“This was a great weekend,” McGuinness summed up. “We have a lot of great people and they make it look easy. It just proves that with the right planning and the right technology, the work can be accomplished.”

In the fall, Nasari will be headed off to Harvard University, where she plans to major in history and science

Manhasset-Lakeville Water District Seeks $42M Bond From Town

n a virtual board meeting on June 30, the Manhasset-Lakeville Water District discussed five capital improvement projects, which will total nearly $43 million. These projects will “enable the water district to meet existing and anticipated water supply demands as well as proposed water quality standards for emerging contaminants 1,4-Dioxane, PFOA and PFOS,” stated documents provided by the district.

The district, which includes the villages of Thomaston, Munsey Park, Lake Success, North Hills, Russell Gardens, Plandome Heights, the unincorporated areas of Great Neck, University Gardens, Manhasset, as well as parts of Flower Hill, Plandome Manor, Great Neck Plaza, Manhasset Hills and North New Hyde Park, currently has contaminants in 10 of their 14 wells. These capital improvement projects are necessary to treat the contamination, according to the district, and it ensures adequate system

The state has not yet issued an MCL for these contaminants, but is expected to release that information sometime this year.

which are resistant to water, grease or stains. These chemicals have been around for decades and are typically used to make carpets, clothing and fabrics for furniture. Both of these chemicals can lead to adverse health effects in humans.

The five capital improvement projects which total in cost of $42.9 million, include an Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP)/Nitrate treatment and well improvements at the Shelter Rock Road Plant, an AOP treatment and well improvements at the Searingtown Road Plant; wellhead treatment for PFOA and PFOS at the IU Willets Plant; a new ground storage tank at Parkway Plant; and a new water supply well and wellhead treatment site.

The Water District was awarded $13.9 million in grants under the New York State Water Infrastructure Improvement Act for the AOP systems at the Searingtown Road and Shelter Rock Road plants. However, to make up the remaining costs for the project, the district plans to obtain a bond from the Town of North Hempstead to finance the remaining costs not provided by the New York State Water Infrastructure Improvement Act. “We have asked the town to approve the project and to authorize the entire cost, $42,927,000, in town bond financing,” Chris Prior, the water district’s attorney, said. “In addition, the Manhasset-Lakeville Water District, like other public water suppliers in this area, has initiated a federal lawsuit in the Eastern District of New York against certain parties who are potentially responsible for the presence in the district water supply sources of some of these emerging contaminants. Any recovery by the district in that litigation would be available to pay down the borrowing sought from the town.”

According to Prior, the district also calculated the impact that may be upon tax payers if the town approves the bond.

“We expect that if the entire amount is borrowed at a 2 percent interest rate, assuming a half-percent increase in assessed value, the annual district property tax increase on an average home with a $760,000 fair market value, would be $164.13.”

Jay Hernandez, a resident of Manhasset, questioned why the board would be looking to put in a new water supply well and wellhead treatment site within the district. Hernandez asked the water district board members to provide him with documents stating how much water is being used now and what the district is planned usage will be after these projects are completed.

“As a resident of the community [I do not] want to see continued expansion of the community, and making Manhasset another New York City with over-building. Our concern is the only reason you need more water is either the water you have is contaminated, which is okay to replace it,” Hernandez said. “But if you want to add 20 percent more capacity because you are expecting 10 or 20 percent more growth, that I have a problem with. I think a lot of residents will also have a problem with it.”

Paul Schrader the superintendent for the Manhasset-Lakeville Water District, stated that the main driver of water production in the area is from sprinkler irrigation, not commercial water use.

“You can compare 2018-19, which were very wet years and you’ll see 2.2 billion gallons and if you wait until the end of this year you’ll see 2.5 billion gallons. That 300 million is all irrigation,” Schrader said. “I understand what you’re saying, we are not building new supply to expand. We are building new supply to be redundant and protect our existing capacity.”

Raising Hopes At Sunrise Camp Farmingdale financial advisor donates grant to nonprofit

hen Northwestern Mutual Financial recently recognized Marc Eisenshtat as a 2020 Community Service Award winner, the nearly 20-year financial advisor who works out of the Farmingdale office donated the $30,000 grant that came with it to the Sunrise Association, an organization that provides gratis summer camp and year-round programs to children with cancer and their siblings.

Eisenshtat’s involvement with Sunrise Day Camp came out of his wanting to support a friend’s son who was battling pediatric cancer. “My friend’s son was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in 2014 and he was 12 years old,� Eisenshtat said. “He got diagnosed and these friends of ours didn’t need money to help their son.

They needed our love and support and we didn’t really know how to do that.

couple of friends started following our other friend around to different Sunrise events and board meetings. We got involved in their Sunrise Walks, which are held in June every year in Melville at the camp. So we did our first walk, joined their team and wore the t-shirts.

At that time, we were just following in their footsteps. Whatever they did and wherever they went, we went, just to support them, because thatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all we knew what to do, right?â&#x20AC;?

As a result of the global health crisis, Sunrise Association has adapted its programming for the upcoming season. The organization is introducing virtual, interactive day camps, offering both live and recorded content for children, siblings and parents.

Participating campers will receive home packages filled with supplies and camp materials to allow them to fully engage in virtual activities and safely enjoy summer camp from home.

Last year, Eisenshtat chaired one of the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s largest fund raisersâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;its annual SunriseWALKS event. The end result was that $1.2 million was raised. Heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s once again chairing the

walk and the pandemic has found it transformed into the SunriseWALKS Virtual Campaign & Celebration, a June 28 fundraiser and interactive celebration featuring celebrity guests, surprise performances, and most importantly, families impacted by pediatric cancer. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s enough of a priority that the Bellmore native and his family were rushing back from a month-long cross-country trip to ensure they returned home in time for the walk. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I cannot take credit for what happened last year,â&#x20AC;? Eisenshtat said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;But the year that we were chairing the walk was the year it broke the $1 million mark and that was great. So the goal this year was to be over last year obviously, but they just got decimated.

They lost millions of dollars because spring is when they have this huge golf outing, the walkâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the money they use to pay the staff, provide the busing and take care of the kids. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s difficult to recoup that. But Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m happy to put myself out there because I do have this vast network of people that I know, love and care about and I think care about me, from clients and friends to acquaintances. Hopefully my voice is what gets people to click on a link. It does nothing for me. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s not like my involvement in Sunrise is changing my life financially.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s changing their life because of my life, which is what I love.â&#x20AC;?

Among the famous folks who participated were Ray Romano and recording artist Sky Katz. The total raised by this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s SunriseWALKS was $672,872. And while the commitment to Sunrise for Eisenshtat and his family is all-consuming, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something they gladly do. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know how to cure cancer and I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t know if they can,â&#x20AC;? he said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to be involved with the politics thereinâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s above my pay grade. Letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s say youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re involved with some charity and at Thanksgiving dinner, your uncle says that he heard the executive director makes one million dollars or that money isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really going to research. Whatever kind of negative press or news there is about a charity, you canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t find any dirt on this one. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s what I call a grassroots love machine.

Additionally, before a customer sits in a manicure or pedicure chair, the equipment is thoroughly cleaned with hospital-grade disinfectants to allow for proper use.

With the combination of restricted customer capacity, more expensive cleaning equipment as well as additional factors, Yim explains that prices have increased at her nail salon, and other local salons too.

Despite all the changes in the nail treatment experience, Yim feels fortunate as she sees many of her customers returning and showing cooperation.

achel Feigelson still remembers her time at Stars of Tomorrow in Syosset and at the Cultural Arts Playhouse, observing and learning from Wendy Taubman.

The student never followed through with performing on stage, but growing up hearing an agent might be in the audience inspired this scholar to pursue that exact path.

Extreme Makeover These days, there are plenty of ways for us to improve our appearance. If we don’t like something about the way we look, we can camouflage it, or even correct it with botox, facial peels or cosmetic surgery.

And, of course, everyone is fascinated by the concept of the makeover—the dramatic transformation shown in those “before” and “after” pictures.

The Jewish way of life encourages health and beauty: we are obligated to take care of our bodies, to make ourselves presentable and to dress elegantly for the Sabbath and holidays. Though it’s true that “beauty is only skin deep,” one’s skin can reflect what lies beneath it; on a physical level, what goes on inside the body is often manifested through the skin.

For a bit of spiritual perspective, let’s take a step back into Biblical times. In the Bible, we read that a person with the skin condition called leprosy was considered impure and would be sent to live outside of the main camp until the priest declared him pure again.

Here’s how we are meant to apply this narrative to our own lives.

Our skin is the permeable barrier between our inside and our outside. It represents our boundaries, our choices about what we decide to let in and what we resolve to keep out. The faculty of speech is the channel through which we bring our inner thoughts to the outside world. Although a formal graduation ceremony has currently been postponed until Aug. 8, the Mineola Union Free School District has been doing all it can to honor this year’s graduating class in nontraditional ways.

The week of June 8 marked Senior Week and held many fun virtual and socially distanced events for students and their families to commemorate their final weeks at the high school. In addition, the district held a drive-through graduation for seniors, where they could drive up to the school building at designated times, receive their diploma from Superintendent of Schools Michael Nagler and take a picture in front of the mustang with Principal Whittney Smith.

Along the drive-through, families were encouraged to jump out and take pictures along several designated photo areas which provided photo opportunities, and a staff member to snap for them.

The arson bomb squad is investigating a house fire that occurred Sunday, June 28, at 7:39 p.m. in Farmingdale. According to detectives, Eighth Precinct officers responded to 35 North Maple St. for a fire. Upon arrival, officers observed flames coming from the building. The Farmingdale Fire Department responded to extinguish the flames with the assistance of South Farmingdale and Bethpage fire departments. The Nassau County Fire Marshall also responded to investigate. The fire caused extensive damage to the building. The building was empty prior to police arrival and no injuries were reported. The fire investigation is ongoing.

Nassau County Legislator Arnold Drucker (D—Plainview) celebrated Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School’s Class of 2020 during a graduation parade on June 25. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Levittown eighth graders from Jonas E. Salk Middle School and Wisdom Lane Middle School recently marked the end of their middle school careers in a unique way. Each school hosted a virtual moving up ceremony on the Levittown Public Schools’ website and building administrators and staff found special ways to celebrate the graduates in-person while practicing social distancing.

Graduates from Jonas E. Salk Middle School, along with their families, watched the school’s prerecorded virtual moving up ceremony from the comfort and safety of their homes. Orchestra, band and choir members performed, staff members presented the award winners and eighth grade president Grace Huggard addressed her class with an uplifting video message. In addition, the virtual ceremony featured congratulatory remarks from Assistant Principal Amy O’Grady, board of education members, central administrators and Principal John Zampaglione.

“Never has a graduating class been called to step into the future with more purpose, vision, passion, energy and hope,” Zampaglione said. “During these trying times, it forces us to pause and reflect on what matters to us the most and what we aspire to be and to accomplish in our future. Kendall Halpern did the unthinkable when it comes to varsity sports. For six years, Halpern became a leader for the Syosset Braves.

As a seven-time captain, Halpern played on the girls varsity soccer, basketball and lacrosse squads. She is an All-County recipient in each sport, and that’s why Syosset chose her as the school’s Female Athlete of the Year.

The All-American lacrosse star also earned the Long Island Player of the Week award, as well as participating on the Long Island Under Armour championship team. Outdoor rugs that withstand the elements are another popular accessory when it comes to creating an outdoor living room. Ralph Lauren’s striped outdoor rugs, which come in tranquil shades of blues, greens and whites, are among the most sought-after this season. Lighter furniture finishes like light gray, stone colors and live edge wood are other elements that help create a comforting outdoor living space.

In June, Safavieh began reopening its brick-and-mortar retail locations across the region with social distancing restrictions in place. The company, which recently opened two new stores in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan and in Norwalk, is supplying masks, gloves and sanitizers at the door for shoppers.

Additionally, it eliminated 20 percent of indoor inventory in all of its stores to encourage social distancing.

“When people walk in it will be much more open, they will not feel crowded,” Yaraghi said. “We have different design sections so no one has to be together in one room.”

Technology also plays a part. Their designers are available via Zoom to help customers select the right furnishings for their homes without coming into the stores. In-person shoppers also have the luxury of viewing potential designs on large TV screens from a safe distance.

“The customers are very excited to be able to come in,” Yaraghi said about the reopening. “They have been waiting for months and they are finally able to create the backyard of their dreams.”

Creating an outdoor sanctuary that mimics the comfort and luxury of indoor spaces is becoming increasingly popular, said Michael Yaraghi, the owner and president of luxury home goods retailer Safavieh.

“After being inside the house for three months during the cold season, people want to enjoy their backyards,” Yaraghi said. “They want to refresh everything because they can’t go to a friend’s house or a restaurant.

They want to make their backyards as nice as they can so they feel like they’re on vacation.”

In sharp contrast to last year’s trends that favored heavy materials, such as iron accents, summer 2020 is all about contemporary decor that emphasizes clean lines, lightness, and, most of all, comfort. That is true both in terms of color and accessories, Yaraghi noted. Airy hues like blue and white are the most apropos outdoor fabric colors of the season.

The palette is prominent in Safavieh’s summer outdoors product line.

“Lifestyle is becoming more causal everywhere—inside the home and outside,” he said. “The idea is that no one can go anywhere, they can’t travel, so people are making their homes an oasis.”

The increased emphasis on the outdoor space has changed the landscape and perspective of outdoor furniture. A prime example of inviting the comfort of the indoors into the

PLANTING FIELDS: From Mansion To Historic Site

The turn of the century represented the zenith of The Gilded Age. The captains of industry built the once-mighty middle-class and needless to say, they had plenty of money left to themselves. Land for the Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, which includes the Coe Hall Historic House Museum, was first purchased in 1904 by Helen MacGregor Byrne, wife of New York City lawyer James Byrne. That land included six farming properties, which she dubbed as the “Upper Planting Fields Farm.”

Between 1904 and 1910, modest work was done to create hedges, perennial borders, and espaliered fruit trees. However, most of the property was left undeveloped. In 1913, the 353-acre site was purchased by William Robertson Coe, an insurance and railroad executive, and his wife Mary “Mai” Huttleston (née Rogers) Coe, the youngest daughter of millionaire industrialist Henry H. Rogers, who had been a principal of Standard Oil. That’s serious money.

The couple begin to create the property that stands as today. The 67-room Coe Hall included greenhouses, gardens, woodland paths and plant collections. Planting Fields also features an herbarium of more than 10,000 pressed specimens. As the Gilded Age boomed along, trees were ferried across Long Island Sound in mid-winter. Roads were widened. Plants included rhododendrons, Japanese crabapples and cherries, and forest and specimen trees, lindens, Scotch and red pines, oaks.

In 1918, tragedy struck as the property’s first mansion burned to the ground. Its replacement, the present Coe Hall, was constructed

The virtual tour and descriptions are available online provide highlights of this historic estate. between 1918-21 in the Tudor Revival-style. According to newspaper stories of the day, Coe Hall quickly became famous as the Coe’s “interest in rare species of trees and plant collections made the estate a botanical marvel.”

Sadly, Mrs. Coe died in 1924 at age 49. As with other great North Shore mansions, the world of the Coe’s came to an end with World War II. By the 1950s, the great suburban boom was underway. In 1949,

the estate was deeded to the state of New York to become a state park.

The Planting Fields Arboretum was thus born. Between 1955 and 1964, the land was also used as a temporary campus for a State University of New York (SUNY) college of science and engineering.

By 1968, the last of the Planting Fields was used for SUNY purposes.

All facilities and grounds became the current day Planting Fields.

Today, the arboretum and state

park covers more than 400 acres in Upper Brookville. Operated by a foundation, the fields include the Coe Hall mansion, hosting an annual summer concert series, primarily focused on jazz. As its website states: “Planting Fields is one of only a few surviving estates on Long Island on its original acreage, intact with all its buildings and its grandly furnished mansion. Nearly a thousand such estates were built after the Civil War through about 1940, making this area the largest concentration of large estates anywhere in the U.S. Just under 60 percent of them survive today; about 400 are in residential use, most on reduced size lots. Planting Fields was one of the last of these estates to be created and is one of the most splendid, with 409-acres.”

The fields face a bright future.

Planting Fields Arboretum was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

In March, the Planting Fields Foundation was selected to participate in the Museum Assessment Program (MAP), which is administered by the American Alliance of Museums.

The Foundation’s participation is made possible through funding provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). “We are honored to have the opportunity to participate in AAM’s highly regarded MAP program,” Planting Fields executive director Gina Wouters said, “Not only is it a reflection of our core values around standards of excellence, but the timing of this exercise is also perfectly aligned with the development of our Strategic Plan.”

Coe Hall is currently closed due to COVID-19, but Planting Fields is offering several fun digital events on www.plantingfields.org. The grounds are also open.

Hiking & Biking Trails Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail

Extending from Massapequa to Woodbury along the border of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail stretches 20 miles from the North Shore to the South Shore. Accessible year-round, though certainly more enjoyable come spring, the trail is dog and bicycle-friendly. It takes an estimated eight hours to walk the full trail, but there are other activities along the way. For example, the west shore of the Massapequa Reservoir is a popular spot for fishing with breathtaking views.

Sands Point Preserve

Located on the Gold Coast, Sands Point Preserve’s grounds are open for visitors on a new summer schedule due to COVID-19. The Great Lawn, Rose Garden, forest trails and pond area are accessible, however, the iconic Hempstead House, Welcome Center, Woodland Playground and dog run are closed for the health and safety of visitors. Restrooms are available in Castle Gould’s Black Box, and are closed periodically for sterilizing and cleaning throughout the day. The number of cars will be limited to avoid crowding in the parking areas and on the grounds.

Mashomack Preserve

Often referred to as the “Jewel of the Peconic,” Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is well worth the quick ferry ride from Sag Harbor or Greenport. Stretching more than 2,000 acres, the preserve accounts for nearly a third of the entire island.

Trails range from 1.5 to 10 miles long, taking hikers passed tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields and freshwater marshes. The preserve teems with wildlife, and it is common to see ospreys, piping plovers and other animals. Due to COVID-19, Mashomack’s in-person events have been postponed until further notice.

Sunken Meadow State Park

Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park offers one of the most stunning views on the Long Island Sound. The 3.7-mile trail takes hikers and bikers passed both wildflowers and sandy shorelines. The park also boasts a boardwalk and activities, including windsurfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding and canoeing. Pets are allowed on the trails, but not in developed areas.

This 300-acre nonprofit nature preserve boasts seven miles of trails to explore diverse habitats, including forests, ponds and wildlife. Dogs and bikes are not permitted.

Feast Of Kings How to host a clambake at home

T

he tradition of the clambake dates back to before our country was founded. It was Native Americans who taught settlers the art of steaming freshly caught seafood on the sandy New England shores. The New England clambake is generally credited to the Wampanoag Indians, indigenous to Cape Cod, Massachusetts.

At the time, lobster was generally used as bait to lure local fish. Oysters, scallops and clams along with locally grown corn were (and remain) hallmarks of the clambake. Today, the clambake has evolved to include lobster, mussels and potatoes, as well.

Fish and sausage are also commonly used.

The ancient cook method of preparing a traditional pit-dug clambake is still practiced today. But there are

drawbacks. Firstly, it’s a day-long affair of digging and steaming so if you’re located near a beach that doesn’t have local restrictions for open fires, you might be in luck. Though for many this is not the case, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is restricting beach access.

No beach? No problem. You can have a mini bake in your backyard. No fire permits necessary and you don’t have to dig a hole and start a big wood fire. You just need a big pot, some cheesecloth and seaweed. Plus, if your not a pitmaster, using a pot makes it much simpler to achieve an even cook.

“It is a modern twist on the traditional clambake,” Kevin Fagan, outreach manager at LobsterAnywhere. com, said. “The traditional clambake takes a long time.”

Clambake at Home

Ingredients 4 dozen steamer clams fresh seaweed 6 potatoes, skin on 6 ears of corn with the husk on 6 medium whole onions melted or drawn butter 6 sausages 6 live lobsters, about 1 ¼ lb each

Clambake Instructions Soak some seaweed in a pot of wat er. Divide the steamers among 6 pieces of cheesecloth and tie corners so you can pick them up. Place on seaweed.

Remove silk and all but two layers of corn husk from the corn . Place corn, potatoes, onions and sausage over the clam s in that order. Top off with the lobsters. Put a layer of cheese cloth over the lobsters and cover with another 4 inches of sea weed. Cover closely and place pot over high heat. When stea ming begins, reduce heat to medium and cook for one hour and 15 minutes.

Serve with fresh, hot crusty bread and plenty of melted butter.

Family Matters Will Sasso talks new ABC sitcom United We Fall

s a young kid, comedian and actor Will Sasso was inspired to get into the entertainment business just by simply watching television with his older siblings. Funny enough and little did he know, he would soon be plastered all over the big screen in films such as The Three Stooges

and Super Troopers 2 and the small screen in numerous television shows including The Orville and MadTV. “My involvement in the entertainment business came from me watching way too much television as a kid,” Sasso said, who said he draws inspiration from the likes of comedy

legend John Candy. “I very early romanticized comedy and television and movies. My older sister and brother sort of had run of the TV, so I ended up seeing a lot of stuff that I didn’t get because I was too young, but it was all good stuff. It was early Saturday Night Live, SCTV and stuff like that.”

The family sitcom follows the trials and tribulations of Bill and his wife Jo (portrayed by Christina Vidal-Mitchell), who are parents of two young kids, as they try to make it day-to-day as a functioning family. Bill’s very judgmental live-in mother, Sandy Ryan, (portrayed by Jane Curtin) and Jo’s brother Chuy Rodriguez (portrayed

by Guillermo Diaz) will never hesitate to let the couple know they’re seemingly screwing up, but Bill and Jo always have each others backs united against everyone.

“Bill is just a very mellow dude, pretty affable and is equal parts annoyed by his wife and what he has to do, and is comforted by his wife,” Sasso said about his character. “Bill is on the brink at all times of completely falling by the wayside and essentially not keeping a roof over their head, not keeping them clothed and fed, but somehow in the end they figure it out. Bill is at his wits end a lot, but at the center of it all, he’s a lovable guy and loving husband and father who has no idea what he’s doing.”

So what was it like working with the rest of the cast? Sasso said everyone clicked pretty instantly.

“When you have a good script, everyone really falls in, so we all got along immediately,” Sasso explained. “I will say the cast are all very sweet people.

I got lucky. I’m very fortunate to be working with people whose company I truly enjoy and I hope they enjoyed mine. It was automatic. We felt it when we were shooting the pilot episode and by the end of the experience, we were like, ‘this feels like episode three or

four’ and it was because of the great environment. As we were shooting it, we realized it was something for people to really enjoy right about now.

When you’re doing that and you’re enjoying other people’s company it’s a pretty mellow experience.”

Sasso said the show is really open to interpretation when people tune in to watch.

“It’s a family show, so it’s a very relatable show for lots of different people,” he said. “I felt like I relate to it personally and other people that I’ve talked to who are close to the process will bring something up that they find relatable in the show, which is different from what I find in the show. And I think that when you have a show, obviously the subject matter here is this family and highlighting the differences within the family, between the characters, the fact that we still are family. I want people to come into it wanting to be entertained by a family show.”

Most might remember Sasso from Fox’s sketch comedy television series

Mad TV, who appeared on seven seasons.

“That’s like impossible to choose my fondest memory,” Sasso said about his time on the show. “At the end of the day, we were having so much fun. It was late nights almost every day and every minute of it. There’s really no highlights. The whole show was one.”

And portraying various characters on the show, who could forget Paul Timberman’s Workshop?

“I think my favorite sketch to do was Paul Timberman’s Workshop,” Sasso recalled. “Those were really involved long sketches where we had to pick any number of fake limbs and with piping going up my sleeve with fake blood all over the set.”

$42,927,000, including any ancillary or related work necessary in connection therewith. The District expects to receive grant funds in the amount of $13,985,700 from New York State to fund a portion of the cost of the Project.

Due to public health and safety concerns related to COVID-19, the Town Board will not be meeting in-person. In accordance with the Governor’s recent Executive Orders, said public hearing of the Town Board will be held via videoconferencing, and a transcript will be provided at a later date. The public will have an opportunity to see and hear the meeting live and provide comments.

Mets, Yankees Prepare For MLB’s Return

aseball is set to return. Yes, finally you will hear the crack of the bats, angry players and maybe even see some great bat flips.

Unfortunately, though, there won’t be any Bartolo Colon-like moments. But that’s OK. Well, for now at least. While baseball will look a lot different in 2020, something is better than nothing.

Many MLB players will opt out of playing due to fears of the coronavirus. For the ones who will play, though, there is still a World Series trophy at stake. While there might be an asterisk next to the winner’s logo, that doesn’t matter. What matters is that baseball is indeed back.

The New York Mets and the New York Yankees are back in the Big Apple after sporadically training in Florida. Oh, and there might be a plethora of Subway Series games, too, because teams will face those within the same region.

Instead of the usual 25-team roster, 30 players will make up each team for the first two weeks of the season. Then, teams will have to cut two players after two weeks of player, followed by another two-player cut a month into the schedule. A total of 60 players will be part of the “taxi squad,” which means they can be quickly added to the roster if a player is diagnosed with the coronavirus.

The Yankees will start this 60-game season, which begins on July 23-24, as one of the World Series favorites.

Though the Yankees lost the ALCS to the Houston Astros, the shortened 2020 campaign might play in their favor.

Aaron Judge looks to rebound and play the full 60 games this year, leading the way for the Yankees’ offense with second baseman DJ LeMahieu, who had a .327 average in his first year in the Bronx. But the entire offense will need to focus on hitting more consistently. Only four players hit for an average of .280 or higher, and that will simply not win you a World Series.

On the mound, the Yankees must pick things up compared to where they left off a year ago. CC Sabathia’s retirement might not be the worst thing,

given he only started 22 games and had a 4.95 ERA. Overall, the Yankees’ pitchers struggled in 2019, with James Paxton serving as the lone started who had a sub-4.00 ERA. That statistic alone should be concerning for Yankees fans. Sure, each of the team’s starters, besides Sabathia, had a winning record, but if the run support doesn’t show up early and often this season, there goes the team’s World Series dreams.

Fortunately, the Yankees make up for the weak starters with a strong bullpen, and that will not change in 2020. Zack Britton, who had a 1.91 ERA in 66 appearances, leads the way in tandem with closer Aroldis Chapman.

If the Yankees can up the consistency just a tad from last year, they can indeed make it and potentially win the World Series.

Heading over to Flushing, the Mets have plenty to be excited about this year. After finishing a disappointing third in the NL East in 2019, the orange and blue look to improve significantly in 2020.

The offseason drama of signing Carlos Beltran as manager, only to have him fired weeks later because of the sign stealing drama when he was with the Astros, is over and done with. Luis Rojas is ready to take control of the team, and the players are enthusiastic to work for someone who comes from a long line of baseball heroes.

Improvements will need to be made in order for the Mets to contend for a spot in the playoffs, though. It starts with the consistently inconsistent offense.

Robinson Cano enters his second year in Flushing, and he really needs to step up. The Mets are relying on him to continue his success from the second half of last season, and that means upping a mediocre .256 average. Jeff McNeil replaces veteran Todd Frazier at third base, and that might be a good thing for the Mets given McNeil’s consistent average, which was an impressive .318 last year.

A major question mark for the Mets still is the status of Yoenis Céspedes. General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen is optimistic he will play in 2020 after sitting out all of 2019 with several lower body injuries. He will likely serve as the designated hitter for the Mets, attempting to prevent further injury in the final year of his contract.

Of course, the Mets look to dominate on the mound once again. Back-to-back Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom will likely continue where Joseph Wolkin Yankees: 39-21, AL East he left off, dominating opposing batters. He Mets: 35-25, Playoffs via champion. Wins ALCS. thrives off pressure, and having only 60 games wild card. Loses NLDS. World Series champions. to do what he does best might mean he lowers Yankees: 40-20, his ERA under 2.00 once again.

As both teams start to tighten up their rosters, one thing is certain. It will indeed be a wild year of baseball in New York.
