Homicide Arrest

T

he Homicide Squad reports the arrest of a Farmingdale man for a homicide that occurred on Thursday, July 16, at 10:39 p.m. in Hicksville.

According to detectives, Eighth Precinct officers responded to La Candela Peruvian Restaurant located at 495 South Broadway for a bleeding male victim. Upon arrival it was determined 22-year-old defendant David Jimenez Salazar stabbed 37-year-old Hicksville resident and coworker Elvin Padilla in the neck with a piece of broken glass. Padilla was pronounced deceased at scene by a Nassau County Police medic.

Jimenez Salazar has been charged with second-degree murder and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned on Friday, July 17, in Mineola.

Last Hope is in constant contact with Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton, coordinating dog transports so the two don’t get overwhelmed with more animals than they can handle at the moment. The partnership is a key for both shelters, which are now getting adjusted to the new normal.

But things are not the same at Last Hope.

Likewise is the case for those who want to adopt animals, but they can’t get the intimate experience they used to have prior to adoption.

For the animals that need special treatment, such as surgeries or regular checkups at a veterinarian, it is harder for Last Hope to get appointments. Additionally, they need volunteers to bring the cats and dogs to these appointments. And the cost of treatment is not going away anytime soon.

Lance is a sweet Redbone Coonhound with heartworm. He came to Last Hope on a transport from a Kentucky shelter. He went straight to one of a local vet to begin pre-treatment.

Lance will need a fosterto-adopt home during his heartworm treatment, recovery, then finalized adoption.

“Adoptions have been wonderful,” Stuurman said.

“But the spring and summer is our peak for fundraising.

We have not had any events to raise money since March, and it’s hurting us financially.”

Each animal costs at least $400 to care for, and that’s just for the interim. That doesn’t include the animals that stay at Last Hope for an extended period of time or need surgery.

Going forward, Last Hope is thrilled to see the increased interest in pet adoption. Now, they want to see that interest continue and bring enthusiasm to these pets’ lives.

Baxter Estates Trustee Withdraws From Upcoming Election

After serving on the Board of Trustees for the Village of Baxter Estates for the last 15 years, Douglas Baldwin has announced that he is withdrawing his nomination for reelection in the upcoming election.

“COVID-19 has far reaching impacts, including cancellation of my return to the USA from a New Year’s celebration with family in Taiwan,” Baldwin wrote in a letter addressed to the Port Washington News.

“This safest of democratic countries, with outstanding public health, has graciously extended my visa until the global pandemic subsides. I

hope for a safe return to my home community of Baxter Estates in the very near future.”

For the last several months Baldwin has been attending board meetings virtually via Skype and Zoom, but states that he is unsure when he will return to the village due to concerns regarding the pandemic.

“Without being physically present, it’s not possible for me,” Baldwin said. “For instance we are having a lot of roadwork done. [We had] an engineer assess all of our roads and step-by-step we’ve taken the most damaged roads and repaired them.

Prior to publication, Baldwin had not notified the village of his intention to withdraw from the election.

“I want to make sure that withdrawing my candidacy is known by everyone at the same time, so that anyone who may be interested in the position [can] have just as much opportunity as anyone else,” Baldwin said.

Although Baldwin’s name will still remain on the ballot for the upcoming election, he stated that he will miss the swearing-in ceremony and will ultimately not be able to serve. In his letter to residents, Baldwin asked

the community to reelect his running mate, Alice Pecklis and “to seek out and support a worthy write-in candidate to fill the open seat.”

“I encourage all civic-minded residents to consider organizing a writein campaign for this open seat on the Village of Baxter Estates Board of Trustees,” Baldwin wrote.

The Village of Baxter Estates election will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 15.

“From what I’m seeing on social media, more and more people are getting depressed and anxious and are drinking to cope with the issues of being quarantined, unemployed and

not being able to pay their bills,” he said. “Those folks are going to need an outlet to be treated.

In the past, stigma prevented people from getting treatment.

You’re going to see more and more people just reaching out and asking for help. They’re not going to care what the stigma is—they just need help, and that’s okay. The next epidemic that we’re going to see after this [pandemic] is a mental health one.”

With most of the money from this grant going to staffing, CNG&CS will me augmenting its 350-plus staff with a group of peers and clinicians that able to provide treatment to individuals that need it the most. Several psychiatrists are on staff that patients would have access to, so if someone needs to go on medication, they’d be able to be assessed for that. The crux of the program is reaching the most vulnerable parts of the population where they live.

“The idea is about bringing clinicians to the front line and meeting people where they’re at,” Friedman said. “The emergency shelters in Nassau

County—those folks are homeless and that’s because of a variety of challenges that they have. Many of them have mental health or substance abuse issues, so when they get into the emergency shelters our program is to strike while the iron is hot. We would be able to assess them at the shelter and see them immediately in terms of connecting them to treatment and to be able to provide treatment on site. We can provide treatment virtually in the facility and begin their road to recovery in terms of getting them on the path of healing. It’s as simple as not waiting for somebody to come in for an appointment, but just being there where they’re at when they need help.”

Nassau IDA Approves Incentives For Hotel In Jericho Commons

he Marriott Residence Inn being developed within the parking lot of the Jericho Commons shopping center just earned yet another victory.

Fourteen months after the Town of Oyster Bay Town Board approved the permit for the hotel, the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency (IDA) is following in its path.

The IDA on July 9 approved a massive benefits package for the hotel. Nassau IDA Chairman Richard Kessel said Twenty-Six Sunset LLC will receive a 20-year PILOT (payment in lieu of taxes) agreement. This means taxes will be frozen for the Marriott for the first five years. From the sixth year on, the PILOT payments will be $192,700 to taxing jurisdictions, versus the current $91,000 in taxes.

“This project will be an economic driver in the Town of Oyster Bay and will provide synergy with area attractions and businesses and also will attract visitors heading to area colleges,” Kessel said in a press release.

Twenty-Six Sunset LLC is run by the Hauppauge-based hotel developer John Danzi.

Danzi’s group applied for the benefits package in December 2018, but the higher construction costs meant a new application this year. The reason for the higher cost is due to the group’s use of a unionized construction firm.

The Marriott will have 93 rooms. The Jericho Commons shopping center is owned by the New Hyde Park-based Kimco group.

“I’m pleased to see the IDA providing crucial support for a development in one of the industries hardest hit by the pandemic, which is hospitality,” Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said.

“This project promises 100 construction jobs and 33 fulltime permanent jobs and is a positive sign about bringing visitors back to our hotels and destinations.”

But getting to this point was not an easy journey for Twenty-Six Sunset LLC and Kimco.

Residents were worried about the influx of traffic the multiple-floor hotel would have on the area. The hotel will be based just off Routes 106 and 107, and people were also worried about the possible infringement of privacy for those whose homes are adjacent to the future hotel.

However, the homes next to the proposed site of the hotel are already shielded by a fence and several trees.

Once the project received approval from the Town of Oyster Bay, Jericho Chamber

of Commerce President Todd Shapiro was ecstatic.

Most of all, he believes, the project will save the famed Milleridge Inn. “There’s a big shopping center next to the Milleridge Inn,” said Shapiro. “You can’t tell me it’s going to create mayhem. It’s going to be respectful. It’s a small hotel, not a big one. You’re not building the Marriott Marquis up there.

It basically works for the local community.”

A petition presented at a public hearing last year included more than 1,000 signatures against the hotel’s construction.

The Milleridge Inn, along with the Milleridge Cottage, sits on the front portion of the property. However, the parking lot is large enough to accompany the hotel that will have less than 100 rooms.

Usually, the town code forces property owners to have at least 2,128 parking spaces for a project like this.

But the applicant, at the time, requested a variance from the town since they will be 552 spots short.

Should the parking situation be insufficient, Kimco might have to create more parking spots on the property’s empty areas.

The developer will also plant evergreen trees that are about 10 feet high in order to block any potential cases of people looking onto the properties adjacent to the hotel.

Though additional traffic is still a concern for local residents, Shapiro explained that the Milleridge Inn makes Thanksgiving dinner for more than 2,000 people each year and traffic is never a concern then.

“You’re telling me no one ever complained about that, but now, they’re complaining that 100 people are going to stay at a hotel and there’s going to be a traffic problem,” Shapiro said. “They have car shows there and different events, and no one’s ever complained before.”

Locust Valley’s Grenville Boys and Girls Club improves its clubhouse

n mid 2019, Grenville Baker Boys and Girls Club began construction to expand and improve its Clubhouse and to provide a diverse mix of recreational and educational spaces to foster wellness and promote success for all kids.

In conceptualizing the renovation, the Club’s architect, builders, staff and young members all weighed in on the kinds of settings and design elements that excite kids, nurture positive social and educational interactions, and encourage continued Club involvement over time. With work well underway, the projected completion date is January 2021.

“This couldn’t come at a more opportune time,” said Executive Director Ray Reyes. “With the COVID shutdown and all it has meant for our children and teens, the need for our programs has never been greater.”

Before the pause, the construction crew had made substantial progress on the project, though much of it was structural and not always visible from the street. All concrete slabs had been

poured and all structural steel and foundation work completed. Retaining walls, storm drains and leaching pools were put in place and the new septic system, underground piping, and upgraded gas and electric had been installed. Mechanical, sprinkler and fire alarm systems were also installed. The exterior work had begun on the front and rear additions and the framing of interior walls was in progress.

Since returning to work, the crew has completed the framing for the 8,000-square-foot rear addition and the 1,000-square-foot front addition.

They have roughed in the interior electrical and plumbing. The new HVAC unit and the ductwork have been installed. The interior framing and sheetrock have begun. Excavation of the new parking lot is under way.

“Our renovated clubhouse will

incorporate natural light, sustainable materials and an inviting aesthetic to create a welcoming space for our community’s children. But beyond the newness of steel beams and safety features is the promise of new possibilities for our kids,” Reyes said.

The modern facility will provide traditional and non-traditional learning spaces and multi-purpose facilities for recreation, athletics, gathering and play. There will be a dedicated space for the youngest members, studios for art and dance, a public meeting room, and new teen and tween centers for middle and high school students. There will be tutoring and quiet learning spaces, digital media and technology labs, dining and gathering spaces, and a teaching kitchen.

“Ultimately, there will be a special place for everyone,” Reyes said.

Glen Cove Resident Helps To Donate Hand Sanitizer To City Employees Over the past few months, the Perrigo Company PLC has donated more than 500,000 bottles of hand sanitizer to local hospitals and first responders facing urgent shortages of this essential product.

This past week, Glen Cove resident and Perrigo employee Carlos Valverde facilitated a donation of 6,528 bottles of hand sanitizers to the Glen Cove Police Department and an additional 6,528 to Glen Cove City Hall. This is the second time that Perrigo was able to donate to the police department since the start of the pandemic.

“The initiation of this welcomed gesture by Carlos and the Perrigo Company is just a small example of what makes Glen Cove a great and unique community,” said Glen Cove PBA President Sergeant Ryan Nardone. “Carlos, a Glen Cove native, resident and friend, chose to utilize his professional capacity to ensure that he made a difference in Glen Cove. hat started as a Girl Scout project turned out to be one of the most subtle ways to say thank you to frontline workers at St. Francis Hospital.

As we know, coronavirus swept through our state, leaving a devastating impact on families worldwide.

To help counter this, Sara Lombardi is raising money to plant a tulip garden outside of St. Francis hospital to thank frontline workers for their outstanding efforts over the past few months.

The garden will be close to the building, letting workers and visitors view the garden as they walk into and out of the hospital. Gratitude Gardens will be flourished with an assortment of different colored tulips that annually grow back for up to seven years. Not only is Lombardi helping to ease the stress of an everyday hospital worker, she is also planting the tulip garden with hopes to receive the Gold Award, which is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn.

of Gratitude Gardens, said. The idea grew from the inspiration of Victory Gardens, which were created during World War II in the United States to commemorate the frontline soldiers in the war, by planting a garden in a way to honor their sacrifice.

“The same thing is happening with our frontline workers,” Lombardi said. “They are risking their own lives to keep us safe. I want to plant it [the garden] in an area where the doctors pass by often where they are

constantly reminded that people are grateful for what they do during this pandemic.”

Lombardi also hopes to reach out to other hospitals and institutions so they can create their own Gratitude Gardens. But Lombardi is not alone.

With the efforts of her parents, Mark and Josephine, Lombardi has had help from both ends. Mark has been networking to reach as many people as possible with this story.

Sara’s mother, Josephine, has been a

cardiothoracic assistant for 21 years and has worked at St. Francis for the last seven years. Their constant support for Sara’s dream makes the Gratitude Gardens bloom into the garden it’s meant to be.

“We presented this idea to the right people through my wife and they loved the idea,” Mark said. “What started out as a small project in late March has slowly evolved into so much more than that. Because of everything being so delayed, it’s truly her own endeavor right now. I think it’s a very positive thing that we all need right now.”

“With everything going on I think it’s such a positive thing and it’s really going to focus on what the important things are,” Josephine said. “When you hear something like this coming on, you’re in the attack mode like we’re going to conquer this and we’re going to get through this. It’s like people going to war as they protect our country, we’re going to protect our people.”

Plandome Junior Firefighter Creates App-Based Hydrant Map Plandome Junior Firefighter Lucas Maley saw an opportunity to improve upon the cardboard maps being used by the fire department to find hydrants on route to a call. He created an app-based hydrant map available for free to all members of the department.

“The old maps were hard to read, especially at night, and they didn’t show some of the newer hydrants,” Maley said.

Now a junior at Manhasset High School, Maley joined Plandome Junior Firefighters as a freshman. Under the leadership of seasoned firefighter Matt Temares, who runs the program, junior firefighters learn basic skills such as search and rescue, hose operation and ladders.

Evening meetings include pizza and socializing after the training drills.

“There are about 100 hydrants in the Village of Plandome, so it took a

while to confirm the locations of all the hydrants, especially since I didn’t have my driver’s license yet,” Maley said. “Some of the hydrants were hidden in the bushes. A lot of them were in new developments and didn’t exist when the old maps were printed.”

Now every department member can view updated hydrant locations using their smartphone, easily visible at night.

Firefighter Brad Coppens said the new map is “so slick and the best way to get useful information” during a fire call.

Maley has created a website, www. mapmyhydrants.com, with detailed instructions on creating an app-based hydrant map.

“I am also happy to work with any departments that need help,” he offered.

“The Junior Firefighters program

is a great way for high school kids to get involved in the community while learning firefighting skills,” Tom Carroll, chief of the Plandome Fire Department, said. “Lucas has been in the program for several years, saw a real need, and came up with a clever solution that works.”

Junior Firefighters also have the opportunity to participate in Camp Fahrenheit, a five-day intensive training camp for high school students hosted by the Nassau County Fire Service Academy that includes courses such as forcible entry, second story bailouts, and live car and warehouse fires. This summer, a handful of Nassau County Junior Firefighters, including Maley, are traveling to Germany on a first-ever exchange program to train with junior firefighters in a fire department outside Hamburg.

Roslyn Board Considers Lumber Road Apartments

he Roslyn Board of Trustees held a virtual board meeting on July 21 to hear the revised site plans for the proposed apartment buildings located at 45 Lumber Rd. The applicant is seeking to construct a 89,714-square-foot, 58.7-foot high, four-story apartment building consisting of 33 two-bedroom apartments. The current village code only allows for 27 apartments for this type of building structure.

The applicant appeared before the board in September 2019 with an initial application, which consisted of a 12-story, 150-foot high building consisting of 27 two-bedroom condominiums. After the public hearing was held, many residents as well as the board had concerns regarding the project, including the height of the building.

Since that meeting, the applicant has made a number of revisions, which were reflected in the revised plans during the July meeting.

Mayor John Durkin stated that while he was “overall in favor of the application,” he did have some concerns and suggestions for how the project could be improved.

“The amenities proposed by the applicant are welcome,” Durkin said.

“I think that overall it’s a good project.

The building is very attractive and is in keeping with the post-industrial look that is on 17 Lumber [Rd.]. I think that this is going to be a very nice addition to the neighborhood.”

Durkin stated that he would like to see a mix of one- and two-bedroom apartments included in the unit. He also touched upon the possibility this project would cause an increase in traffic, which was a topic largely discussed during the meeting last September.

Deputy Mayor Marshall Bernstein brought up concerns regarding how the village would handle the additional effluent that would be added and whether or not there would be sufficient capacity at the Roslyn Water District’s pumping station to handle this project.

“This is of vital importance because some of you may remember all of the issues the village had a couple of decades ago with providing sufficient capacity in that pumping station and

issues that arose from that,” Bernstein said. “It’s very important that we know that there is sufficient capacity in the pumping station to deal with that effluent.”

“We’ve submitted a request to the Roslyn Water District for a letter stating that there is adequate capacity to accept the new proposal for this project,” the applicant stated. When that information becomes available, the applicant stated that they will make the documentation available to the board.

Trustee Marta Genovese brought up some of the same concerns she had during the last public hearing, which was how cars would safely turn off of Lumber Road onto Northern Boulevard, given that it’s an already difficult intersection.

Sarah Oral, a traffic engineer, reiterated Genovese’s concerns and suggested that the applicant conduct an auto turn analysis so they can properly understand how trucks maneuver in and out of Lumber Road.

Oral also suggested implementing a “no left turn” sign during certain hours to prevent drivers from making a left turn during morning and afternoon peak hours. She also reiterated Mayor Durkin’s comment about allowing for the building to include one and two-bedroom apartments.

“If think if they are all two-bedroom units, I am not really comfortable with that,” Oral said. “I really think it should be a mix of ones and twos. When you want a vibrant downtown, you want a

mix of different residences.”

Trustee Craig Westergard, an architect, stated that he supported the project, but brought up some concerns regarding the overall aesthetics of the building.

“I was looking at the current design and the original design that was submitted sometime ago,” Westergard said. “It’s ironic to me that the current design of the building is similar to the original design that we looked at.”

Westergard stated that he thought that the aesthetics of the proposed site looked too similar to an office building.

“I think there would be an improvement in the aesthetics if, as in some of the former designs, the building could step from one story to the next,” Westergard said. “My feeling always was that 17 Lumber Rd. that we talked about tonight, it’s really about the tallest it should be on that road. I will be hopeful that the applicant could modify the design. Overall, I’m in favor of the concept, it’s certainly going to be an improvement over what was there and what’s there now.”

The board was then opened up to public comment. Attorney Carrie Anne Tondo from the Hauppauge-based Ingerman Smith LLP spoke on behalf of the Roslyn School District.

“I would like to remind the members of the board that the district does support the notion of responsibility when planning for the future of the community,” Tondo said. “And while it’s not generally opposed to

redevelopment and renovations that serve to benefit the collective constituencies of the village and the districts, multiple developments in a short period of time do have the potential to place strain on infrastructure.”

Tondo urged the board to take into consideration the ways in which this project could potentially affect the village, especially given the pandemic and its difficulties that school districts face at the present time.

“This proposed project does potentially, individually and collectively with other projects, have the potential to impact the school system, roads, water supply and emergency services,” she said. “We ask that these impacts be taken into consideration. The [school] district is in the midst of undertaking a study to determine the impact of the development on the school system.

According to the district’s consultant, the preliminary analysis that is undertaken relative to this project will yield 16 school-aged students and that’s based upon factors of analysis in the context as it applies to the school district.”

The board voted to review and study “in fine detail” the application and moved to discuss it at their next meeting. The Village of Roslyn will hold their next Board of Trustees meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m. via Zoom.

Flyover Marks Museum Opening

T

he American Airpower Museum (AAM), Long Island’s only flying military aviation museum, will hold a grand reopening special event on Saturday, Aug. 1 at Republic Airport in Farmingdale, where AAM is based.

At 11 a.m., World War II and other vintage aircraft will depart from AAM’s ramp to take to the skies over Long Island’s north and south shores.

Aircraft will create camera-ready opportunities as they perform low-level passes over the airport.

These flights will feature AAM’s Grumman TBM Avenger, two North American T6 Texans, the AT28D5 Vietnam-era combat fighter, the WACO Biplane and as an added attraction, L-39 Cold War-era Russian jets.

Like all other state museums, the AAM was forced to close due to the coronavirus outbreak, resulting in the cancellation of half of the museum’s 2020 flight season. This was slated to be a banner year for AAM. Museum aircraft were scheduled to participate in historic events marking the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII and honoring U.S. veterans who made the Allied victory possible. As they have

And it must be noted that on May 24, the AAM celebrated its 20th anniversary in silence.

At the end of the 2019 season, AAM took its aircraft offline for the winter to begin scheduled maintenance and inspections, making sure the warbirds would be ready for a full 2020 flight season. When the coronavirus

outbreak hit our shores, the AAM’s Board of Directors preemptively closed the museum on March 16 for two weeks. On March 22, New York State ordered all non-essential businesses statewide to close. Two weeks became three months.

AAM President Jeff Clyman said it’s always been AAM’s mission to honor the legacy of those who gave all to preserve our freedoms.

recently resumed maintenance and inspection of our aircraft so that much anticipated flight operations can begin with our grand reopening event. We also promise a flying salute to our veterans and front line workers very soon,” he said.

Admission is $13 for adults, $10 for seniors and veterans, and $8 for children. Due to the need for social distancing, admission will be limited to first come/first served. A maximum attendance of 150 persons will be allowed on the outdoor ramp area, with limited access to the museum.

All visitors will be required to wear face masks and will have their temperatures digitally taken at the entrance. As a special promotion, the first 20 people admitted will be included in a raffle for WACO Biplane flights later in the summer (limit one per family).

The “thank you” signs were placed around prominent areas around the village including village hall, Wilson Park and the Mineola Memorial Public Library. Most of the signs have now been taken down and the UPSEU is calling out Rini for removing them.

Property Tax Collection Keeps Pace In Westbury D

espite the fears raised by the coronavirus pandemic, property tax collection is nearly matching revenue projections in Westbury.

During the July 2 Village of Westbury Board of Trustees meeting, held telephonically, Village Clerk Robert Juliano said that collections were about 92 percent of the expected $6.002 million budgeted amount.

Reached at press time, Juliano said the latest figure was about 96.5 percent.

Juliano, who will soon take over the duties of the retiring Ted Blach as village treasurer, said he is working with trustees Vincent Abbatiello and Beaumont Jefferson to enable payments by credit and debit cards and e-checks on the village’s website.

In his budget message, Mayor Peter Cavallaro noted that the 2020-2021 fiscal year budget was the ninth consecutive adopted that fell under the state-mandated tax levy cap, with the allowed increase at exactly 3 percent

“This year’s budget was the most difficult to compile in at least the past decade, due to circumstances beyond the village board’s control...particularly the unprecedented economic, fiscal and societal uncertainties related to the ongoing coronavirus public health crisis,” he wrote.

Cavallaro expected decreases in such revenue lines as “municipal fees, parking fees, building department fees, mortgage and sales tax receipts, etc. In addition, potential cost increases due

to current conditions are estimated, and we assume that no federal or state assistance will be provided to mitigate these impacts.”

Abbatiello said the “Split the Bill” campaign, held in conjunction with the Westbury Business Improvement District (BID) was successful.

Held on June 24, with 15 restaurants participating (all but three on Post Avenue), the day generated about $17,000 for the eateries. Patrons had to sign up with the splitthebillny. com website, submit a picture of their meal and the receipt, along with a reimbursement form, and they would be compensated for 50 percent of the bill, up to $30. Participants received $8,000 in reimbursements.

The program is funded by The Sidgmore Family Foundation “with the goal of helping local restaurants and the community. There are no fees for participants or restaurants to get involved.”

Using Telehealth To Care For Mental Health Two major New York State mental health advocacy organizations—the New York State Council for Community Behavioral Healthcare (the Council) and the Community Health Care Association of New York State (CHCANY)— have made a formal recommendation that New York State permanently remove barriers to the provision of telehealth visits for all New Yorkers after the COVID-19 pandemic disaster declarations have expired.

In their recent press release on the matter, they stated, “Increased use of telehealth has allowed primary care, mental health and substance use disorder care recipients who cannot physically visit a healthcare professional in person to use their phone or computer to access the services they need.”

At North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center, we support these efforts to ensure comprehensive, coordinated and integrated continuum of care. I asked members of our mental health staff to share their experiences with telehealth during the pandemic so we could add our voice to the advocacy effort.

One of our staff members, Vanessa McMullan, who is a clinical social worker with special expertise in the area of postpartum depression, shared her thoughts with me.

Beyond using her testimony to advocate for continued and permanent use of telehealth, I thought I would take this

I think it’s important to realize that when the declaration expires, it does not mean that the crisis is over.

Trauma lingers. We need to ensure that people will still be able to access services, and by allowing telehealth to continue, these efforts will be supported.”

By removing the barriers to the permanent use of telehealth and reimbursing telehealth visits on par with in-person visits, New York will go a long way to advancing a comprehensive, coordinated and integrated continuum of mental health care.

We don’t mind occasionally paying a little more to help our other local stores survive. The employees go out of their way to help us find what we need.

Customer service is their motto. As an independent mom and pop store, they don’t have bulk buying purchasing power that large national chains have.

The owners can’t negotiate lower prices from suppliers like national chains. This is

why they sometimes charge a little more. It is worth the price to avoid the crowds and long lines at larger stores in exchange for the convenience and friendly service your neighborhood community store offers.

The owners work long hours, pay taxes and provide local employment. Many employees are younger people working at their first job.

North Hempstead To Assist Local Gyms And Fitness Studios

N

orth Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board have announced that fitness instructors will be allowed to conduct classes at town parks. Fitness instructors will need to obtain a permit to hold these classes. The permits will be $25 per hour, and the classes can host up to 25 participants.

“We are doing all that we can to provide local businesses with relief during these challenging times,” Bosworth said. “It is our hope that by allowing fitness classes to take place in our parks, it will relieve some of the burden on gyms and fitness studios due to the pandemic.”

“With the continued mandate to keep small Pilates studios like

ourselves closed, we are looking to add outdoor classes and utilize the beautiful spaces available in the parks,” David Lo, Co-Owner of Club Pilates in New Hyde Park, said. “We hope to bring the joy and benefits of Pilates to the community outside our doors and get us all healthier and active.”

North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth and members of the town board, along with the North Hempstead Housing Authority, thanked the Girl Scouts of Nassau County and Boy Scouts for their donations of homemade masks for local residents.

“The Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts of Nassau County are dedicated to helping others, especially those in their community,” Bosworth said. “We are so thankful to them for using their skills and making a difference in helping others.”

As part of the town’s mask making initiative Scouts were provided with step-by-step tutorials and a card to include a personal note from the recipient. During the course of a month, more than 100 masks were created and donated to the North Hempstead Housing Authority who distributed them to residents.

To address a shortage in blood supplies cause by a decrease in donations during the COVID-19 pandemic, Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan (Woodbury) partnered with the Bayville Fire Department to host a community blood drive for the New York Blood Center on July 13.

More than 80 residents joined Lafazan in rolling up their sleeves as part of a coordinated campaign to replenish blood supplies at local hospitals. Fully recovered COVID-19 survivors were also able to donate convalescent plasma.

Wantagh High School senior Athena Yao was named a $2,500 scholarship winner in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Yao was chosen among more than 15,000 talented finalists from each state, who were judged based on their skills, accomplishments and potential for success. As a finalist, she was selected through a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors based on her academic record, the level of difficulty of courses studied and grades earned, scores from two standardized tests, contributions and leadership in school and the community, a finalist essay and a high school official At the young age of 7, Jessica Sayo from Levittown is well aware of how Alzheimer’s can affect those you love as she witnessed her grandpa, Tony Matera from Hicksville, deal with the disease. They joined the Long Island Alzheimer’s and Dementia (LIAD) Center after he was diagnosed. The 7-year-old learned firsthand the importance of her grandpa’s weekly “retirement club’”and learned to love everyone there. Inspired by how happy and fulfilled her grandfather seemed from the LIAD Center, she sold 250 hand-made purple bracelets.

Roslyn Heights native turned celebrity Michael Schulson is a master of technique. As the Founder and CEO of Schulson Collective restaurants, Schulson has launched a dozen restaurants in as many years. You may have caught him on TLC’s Ultimate Cake Off and Style Network’s Pantry Raid.

He has also appeared as a guest on The Today Show, The Martha Stewart Show, Live with Regis and Kelly, The View, Rachael Ray and The Tyra Banks Show.

Today, Schulson is considered among Philadelphia’s most successful hospitality professionals, but his

culinary roots are humble. Raised on Long Island, he recalls family dinners around the table—a tradition that instilled his love for gathering people together around meals.

“It is all about caring and bring people to the table,” Schulson said.

From his very first job at a Port Washington pizzeria, Schulson went to graduate from the Culinary Institute of America, where he honed his French culinary skills.

“Once you master French, you can move on to anything you want,” he said.

They are simple, fun and a little fancier than your average burger on the barbie. Here are Schulson’s tips for mastering the art of grilling skewers in your backyard.

“I love skewers—it’s my Asian influence thing,” he said. “If you skewer your meats or other proteins, it allows you to take eight ounces of protein and

dishes out summer grilling tips make seven-to-nine skewers. That will feed three to four people with eight ounces of protein, as opposed to the way people traditionally eat, sitting down to eight ounces per person.�

Marinade “I love a simple marinade,� Schulson said. “I take equal parts soy sauce and sugar with mirin (a type of rice wine) and a little bit of olive oil. You can put a little bit of garlic or onion powder in there, and you’re good to go.�

Soak your stick “I prefer using wood skewers over metal skewers because it saves time in the cleanup. My wife and I don’t like to clean very much, but we are neat freaks,� he said with a laugh. “One of the best things to do is to soak wooden skewers overnight—for 24 hours. In my refrigerator, I have one of those takeout containers from the Chinese food place that I fill up with water and short skewers so anytime I want to make skewers,

I can use those. Soaking the skewers is important because it prevents the wood from burning.�

Bring the heat—but not too high “Grilling is one of those things where people overcomplicate it—it doesn’t have to be difficult,� Schulson said. “For me, grilling is about simplicity. One of the things I always keep in mind is that you shouldn’t grill anything on a really high heat. High heat won’t do anything except burn the food faster, make it black on the outside and overcooked on the inside. It is all about a nice medium heat—slow and steady. One of the tricks I like to use is to crank the heat all the way to let the grill get hot and then to lower the heat so you’ll get a nice char on the outside without it being burnt.�

Separate veggies & protein “I love to skewer vegetables, chicken, steak and seafood—whether that is shrimp or swordfish,� he said. “Mushrooms and asparagus are great

skewered. One of the tricks is to take two skewers so they are about a half-inch part—you’ll have two skewers for one mushroom or one asparagus on its side— that makes it easier to turn. I don’t believe in layering skewers— proteins and vegetables should be cooked separately.

If you have chicken on a skewer with tomatoes, onions and zucchini, they are not going to cook at the same rate. You’re going to end up with an overdone tomato or an underdone piece of chicken.�

Schulson said. “You already cut everything into bite-size pieces before grilling so you don’t need a fork or a knife. All you need is skewered vegetables and skewered protein for a complete meal.

With this pet population living longer, geriatric dogs, along with their owners and veterinarians, are faced with a whole new set of age-related conditions. As dogs age they are faced with similar issues that humans face, such as muscle loss, arthritis and orthopedic issues or injuries. If your dog is starting to avoid active playing or running or if he has trouble with daily activities such as jumping up on a favorite chair or into the family car, he may have age-related illness such as arthritis.

The High Line

Nearby The Vessel, the High Line recently reopened to the public after being shutdown for the past five months, but with new rules in place.

The High Line is a public park built on a historic freight rail line elevated above the streets of Manhattan’s West Side. Saved from demolition by residents and the city, the High Line opened in 2009 as a hybrid public space where visitors experience nature, art and design.

The High Line is now introducing capacity limits for the park with a

system of timed-entry reservations, reduced hours, 6-feet distance markers at entry queue and on the High Line and enhanced cleaning of high-touch surfaces throughout the day. The High Line has also suspended food, retail, tours and public programming services. If you do go to the High Line, you’ll need to wear a face covering of some kind.

Located at the nexus of Chelsea and Hell’s Kitchen, The Vessel at Hudson Yards was built as part of the Hudson Yards Redevelopment Project. The Vessel, which some call an interactive landmark, unlike most city landmarks, encourages visitors to climb it. Imagined by British designer Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio, The Vessel was made as a focal point where people can enjoy new perspectives of New York City from different heights, angles and vantage points.

Standing 150-feet in the air, The Vessel, was fabricated in Monfalcone, Italy, and arrived on Manhattan’s West Side after almost two weeks at sea with a brief stay at Port Newark and a five-hour barge trip across the Hudson River. The Vessel was constructed from a steel frame that was covered by a copper-colored steel cladding.

The Vessel is composed of 154 interconnecting flights of stairs boasting an impressive count of 2,500 individual steps and 80 landings. The Vessel, which closely resembles a honeycomb shape, rises 16 stories and gives breathtaking views of the nearby Hudson River

he COVID-19 pandemic has put the ability of student-athletes to play their respective sports into serious question this year.

That is especially the case for those attending Stony Brook University, Molloy College and Hofstra University, as all three universities have postponed their fall sports seasons.

New York’s ability to contain coronavirus has improved over the last couple of months, but a case count exceeding 412,000 in the Empire State has schools nervous about the potential impact of reopening campuses at all, let alone bringing back sports this fall.

However, football was still left up to the college as they are part of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA), as well as all of Hofstra University’s sports teams.

The CAA decided to allow each individual school to decide the fate of their fall sports, but both appear to have elected to at least postpone them this year.

In addition to football, these three schools have elected to postpone sports, such as soccer, cross country, field hockey and golf.

It remains to be seen if a return to fall sports will be feasible at all during the school calendar year. But it appears that student-athletes on these teams won’t take to the field until at least the beginning of 2021.
