County malls are officially open for business under phase 4

ven before the pandemic hit, retail experts warned that malls were in trouble, threatened by changing tastes and shopping habits.

But to those who enjoy shopping in person, a welcome development in Nassau County was the reopening of malls, which have proven to be a massive sales tax revenue generator for the county.

Roosevelt Field in Garden City is the biggest shopping center in the region, and reopened July 10 after closing on March 19. Owned by Simon Properties Inc., which operates two other malls on Long Island, it has about 260 stores.

“It made sense to me that the malls open up with retail,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, who initially advocated for malls to open up in phase 2 of the reopening. “The governor mandated that new filters to be put into malls for them to reopen. I know that our malls, including Simon Properties, did everything they could and quickly as they could to get those filters and other protocols in place.”

According to Curran, Roosevelt Field alone generates about $88 million in sales taxes, and about $35 million in school and general property taxes.

Earlier this month, Governor Andrew Cuomo said that in order for malls to reopen, they will have to upgrade their air filtration systems in an effort to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Air conditioning filters with a Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value (MERV) rating capable of

filtering COVID-19 particles or similar air exchange measures are now mandatory. A COVID-19 particle is approximately 0.125 microns in diameter. Filters with a high MERV, such as High Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filters, have been shown to help reduce the presence of COIVD-19 in air filtration systems. According to Cuomo, these new filters should be MERV-13 or a higher rating and cannot be anything below a MERV-11 rating.

“Malls have installed state-of-theart infiltration systems to clean the air of any contaminants,” Curran said.

“We know that this is a heavy virus and we know that it can be blocked by special filters and by face masks.

We want to prove, and we are proving, that we can come back and reopen if we continue to use common sense. It’s not complicated.”

Curran also said that malls are a real economic anchor for the county, stating, “Forty percent of our revenue from all the services that we [the county] provide come from sales tax.

We’ve fallen off an economic cliff with the shutdown of the economy and our businesses. We estimate over the past four months, sales tax in Nassau County has dropped 30 percent.”

Roosevelt Field Mall employs more than 4,000 people. Business hours for the mall are also shortened. Sunday is noon to 6 p.m. and every other day is 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Legislators Propose Police Complaint Hotline And Website

he debate to improve Nassau County residents’ relationship with the police department is on. A month full of tense protests in the name of equality has sparked a potential change for the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) that could increase transparency and help identify commonalities from citizens’ complaints against the department.

Nassau County Legislators Siela Bynoe and Kevan Abrahams, who is the minority leader in the Nassau County Legislature, recently penned a bill to create a 24-hour hotline specifically designated for complaints against the NCPD. The two legislators also proposed an adjacent website, which will help increase the speed of complaints.

“By establishing this accessible, transparent and user-friendly process for filing police misconduct allegations, Nassau County can better protect the rights of its citizens and further equip our law enforcement professionals to uphold the highest standards of conduct and discipline,” Abrahams said. “Establishing these new lines of communication will create opportunities for identifying, investigating and resolving allegations of excessive use of force and other misconduct.”

The goal of the hotline and website is not to further tensions between the public and the police, but rather to advance transparency and provide the department valuable data. The hotline will also provide complainants with the name and contact information of the NCPD investigator that is working on the reported case within five days of the initial filing. The investigator will then have to provide updates to the person or group of people who filed the original complaint.

“It will definitely improve police-community relations,” Bynoe said. “It allows the police commissioner to understand what is happening when police are in the community. It allows for collective measures to be put in place. This will allow individuals to have an idea to understand how their complaints were resolved.”

Bynoe explained that if the bill passes and is signed into law by Nassau County Executive Laura Curran, the police commissioner will create a biannual report to the Nassau County Legislature.

The report will include every single complaint that was reported by the 24-hour hotline and website, as well as its status. The report will then be published online, as law enforcement personnel’s names will be highlighted for outstanding cases. Additionally, it will show cases that did not need further discipline.

Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature Richard Nicollelo (R—New Hyde Park) disputes the proposed bill. He said the police department features a hotline already, but admits that changes might be needed to streamline its efficiency.

“The NCPD already has a dedicated telephone number for complaints, which is staffed 24 hours a

Siela Bynoe is the legislator of the Second District. day,” Nicollelo said. “We will evaluate existing means to file complaints, as well as public notices, regarding those means to determine if they are sufficient. It is important to keep in mind that the NCPD has done an extraordinary job keeping our communities safe and the overwhelming interactions of Nassau residents with the police are positive.”

The NCPD’s website, www.pdcn.org, does have a complaint form that citizens can fill out. It says in red, at the top of the screen, “A department representative will normally respond to your message within three business days.”

However, this bill, the legislators explained, will create a smoother process. The process will send complaints to the Nassau County police commissioner and deputy county executive for public safety within two business days of receiving a complaint, a day sooner than what the NCPD’s website promises.

The bill’s creation came after the two legislators spoke about complaints residents had about police in their two districts. Several residents raised concerns to the legislators that they were unsure if the NCPD followed up and if the complaint had been investigated at all.

“We thought it’s important to create some level of transparency and accountability in the complaint process,” Bynoe said. “This lets individuals share any videos they have in support of their claim.”

Five days after the complaint is resolved, the complainant will receive news of the resolution.

That report will notify the complainant of whether or not the identified officer(s) will receive discipline.

“It allows them to provide additional information,” Bynoe said. “It allows people to know someone has their case and is actively working on their case.”

Bynoe wants this to be seen as a tool for bettering the relationship between the community and the NCPD, rather than making it seem like it is a divisive tactic.

“This is an opportunity for us to enhance our delivery of service to residents as it relates to policing,” she said.

The Nassau County Police Benevolent Association did not respond to a request for comment at the time of publication.

The bill has to be called to committees in the legislature, and Bynoe expects that to happen at some point in August. From there, it will proceed through the necessary steps in the legislature.

Should it pass, Curran will then sign it into law and the new hotline and website can be created.

Hempstead Resident Found Murdered In Roslyn

assau County Police detectives responded to a call on July 11 regarding a man who was found lying on the ground in the vicinity of Northern Boulevard and Museum Drive in Roslyn.

Police later identified the victim on Tuesday, July 14 as Jarol Hernandez, 17 of Hempstead.

Hernandez had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene by a Nassau County Police Medic, according to the police report.

Charles Riley, director of the Nassau Museum, stated that the investigation into the murder of Hernandez hasn’t had any affect on the museum hours or its operation.

“Because the incident occurred outside our property on Northern Boulevard, the museum has been

open for regular business hours each day and our visitors have enjoyed the new show without being affected by it,” Riley said in an email statement. “Our hope is that the able and professional Nassau County Police Department will soon bring the assailant to justice so that our neighbors, many of whom enjoy the sculpture park and grounds, can breathe easier.”

Detectives said the investigation is ongoing. At the time of publication, no arrests had been made. Anton Media Group reached out to the Nassau County Police Department regarding the investigation, but they did not reply to requests for comment by press time. Farmingdale High School senior aims for interstellar colonization

ily Coffin wants to go to Mars.

It’s a dream she’s latched onto ever since her eighth-grade earth science teacher screened a documentary about a Mars One project whose goal was to explore the Red Planet.

“This documentary was about creating a colony on Mars, and I decided that’s what I wanted to do with the rest of my life,” she said.

Coffin is well on her way to reaching that dream. She’ll be attending the California Institute of Technology (Caltech) as a mechanical engineering/planetary science double major in the fall, a perfect fit for her future plans.

“Caltech is attached to the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory,” Coffin said.

“They have a really strong emphasis on research and I’ve done a lot of research in high school. So it’s a really good fit for me in terms of what I’ll be able to do as an undergrad because I’ve always wanted something beyond the classroom setting. Even in high school, I worked in four labs in three

years. A place where I could do research was important to me. Plus, they’re ranked something like number five globally. It’s a very good school.”

Helping out with the tuition are a trio of grants Coffin was shocked to receive—the Two Brothers Scrap Metal Environmental Conservation Scholarship ($1,000), a PTA Merit

Scholarship ($350) and the Dr. Roger S. Weinblatt Memorial Scholarship ($1,000).

“We weren’t told what scholarships we were actually receiving,” she said.

“We just had to sit through the hourlong video that they posted. I was really surprised to end up with three of them.”

Hard work has enabled the Farmingdale native to wind up matriculating at a top university.

In addition to spending her senior year commuting to the Cold Spring Harbor lab on a weekly basis, Coffin spent summer 2019 as part of the Simons Summer Research Program, a competitive initiative that featured students from around the country descending on Stony Brook University to do research.

Prior to this, the Farmingdale High School senior toiled away in labs in summer 2018 (Molloy College) and summer 2017 (Stony Brook University). The common thread for all these experiences was that Coffin spent her time doing either

microbiology or computational biology research. And while the idea of one day colonizing Mars might seem to be quite a tall order, Coffin credits robotics team advisor Ann Grady with inspiring her to aim so high.

“Coach Grady has worked with a lot of kids in Farmingdale that pursued research, so she knew about all the lab stuff,” Coffins said. “She taught me how to conduct myself in the research pursuit. She always made it seem like the adult part of looking into research opportunities wasn’t too far out of my reach.

“The reason I was so successful in science research and getting into such a competitive school was because a lot of kids wait to feel like they’re mature enough to do something. We’re all waiting to go to college and be qualified to do something. But [Grady] taught me that being in high school, as long as you have the motivation to want to learn something, you don’t need to have the prerequisite knowledge to work in a lab, because that’s why I’m there—to learn.”

Westbury Mayor Torches Fireworks

he loud booms of the Fourth of July still echoed in the mind of Village of Westbury Mayor Peter Cavallaro five days later.

“There was an unprecedented level of illegal fireworks activity in the community,” Cavallaro said during the telephonic board of trustees meeting on July 9. “What we saw happening here, in multiple locations on residential streets, was unlicensed, unprofessional residents igniting professional-level fireworks within 10 feet of people and homes, really creating a tremendous danger. [They showed] disregard for the safety of their homes and families, let alone their neighbors and community.”

Cavallaro said that he got into his car on the Fourth of July and drove around the village to monitor what was going on, “and the complete wanton disregard for the community safety was really appalling. I was speaking to the fire enforcement people after-the-fact. I was told that there were at least five fires caused as a result of these fireworks displays in Nassau County, including a house in East Williston and a house in Garden City. We were lucky that nobody was hurt and no damage was done. The ones that are most affected are our pets—they react very negatively [to fireworks]. It’s not a victimless crime or activity. It’s something we have to do a better job with and frankly, the police department has to do a much better job with of enforcing the laws.”

“We’re going to be looking over the course of the next several months at what modifications to our code we need to make to strengthen the penalties for these type of activities,” Cavallaro said.

He added that he would urge the village court to not accept plea bargains and “not to let [the violators] off easily.”

“The fireworks are basically illegal under the penal law, not under village law,” he said. “We will seek to add a provision under the village law to make

that a violation. Also, we will tighten up our laws relating to blocking of public streets (many of the displays closed down roads). Our code enforcement officers can’t enforce traffic or penal law violations, but would be able to enforce village code violations.

We are analyzing what additional laws we can impose that would address this. We will also seek to increase the fines.”

During public comment section, resident Chester McGibbon said he had never experienced anything like the amount of illegal fireworks on Independence Day. “Where these outsiders and do you need to act more proactively next year?” he wondered.

The mayor replied that they were local residents.

He revealed that in conversations with police authorities and fire authorities, he learned that over the past several years the availability of these type of fireworks is much easier to come by today than in the past.

He noted that New York City reported an 800 percent increase in complaints about illegal fireworks, and the village “had a similar deluge of complains leading up to the Fourth of July and after.”

The mayor hopes that next year, the police department will increase its patrols and enforce the laws against illegal fireworks.

Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder did not reply to a request for comment.

hen Allen John Pilate III heads off to the United States Military Academy Preparatory School at West Point on July 19, it will be the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. It’s one that will have him be the first in his family to serve in the military.

“I’ve always wanted to go there—it’s always been the dream school for me,” he said. “It’s a perfect combination of getting a top tier education, serving in the military and playing lacrosse.”

Given the fact that Massapequa’s graduation ceremony is on July 22, Pilate was given the opportunity to put on his blue cap and gown and receive his diploma via a special socially distanced event held in the auditorium lobby on July 2 in front of a small gathering of family members, teachers, coaches, administrators, guidance staff and new high school principal Barbara Lowell.

Pilate grew up alongside older sister Kayla, currently a junior nursing major at Molloy College. A consummate athlete, the future West Point cadet spent his younger waking hours “practically living at Marjorie Post Park,” where he played a number of team sports, including football. The Fairfield Elementary School alum’s zeal for competition later found Pilate wrestling and becoming an elite defender, which led to his being named an All-County lacrosse player and a place on Massapequa’s 2019 state championship team. No slouch in the classroom, Pilate was a member of the National Honor Society and Peer AIDS Educators Club and took several Advanced Placement and college-level course, many of which he enjoyed immensely.

“AP Calculus was pretty fun because I got one of the best teachers for that class,” he said. “A lot of the engineering classes were pretty fun. I had a lot of my friends in my sports marketing class in 10th grade.”

While the impact of COVID-19 gave Pilate’s senior year quite a twist, he still managed to navigate these obstacles as well.

“I think I handled [the situation] well,” Pilate said. “We went to online classes. It was complicated at first because not even the teachers knew how to handle everything. But we eventually got acclimated to it. It wasn’t bad at all. I had maybe two or three hours of work a day, so it wasn’t terrible.”

Pilate’s drive and eventual admission to West Point is all the more admirable given the fact that

approximately 1,300 cadets enter the Academy each July, with about 1,000 of them eventually graduating.

A self-described hands-on person, Pilate is looking to study mechanical engineering and eventually become an engineer in the Army’s special forces. In addition to the Massapequa native having to apply directly to the academy, he also had to secure a nomination from a member of Congress, in this case it was the recently retired Peter King. Pilate shared that applying to the Point was rather complicated.

“There is a portal where you have so much paperwork to fill out,” he recalled. “I had to get my recommendation letters—there were at least four of them—mostly from my teachers.

After that, there was another 20 things I had to fill out. It was a whole long process.”

In heading up to West Point, Pilate will also be subjected to a pandemic protocol that ensures the student body will be able to proceed forward into their semester in a safe and measured manner.

“Once I get up there, I get a COVID test right away,” Pilate said. “I’m not sure how long it takes, but if you test positive, I think you quarantine up there for two weeks. If you’re negative, then you obviously do the normal stuff. Everyone is going to have to wear a mask. I saw the rooms back in January. They’re not super-close quarters. So that’s good and I don’t think they have to set up any kind of specialized social distancing. Once we test negative, we’re all essentially living in a bubble.”

With this latest chapter of his life looming, Pilate is eager to see how his future unfolds.

“I have to serve the first five years after I graduate,” he explained. “If I like it, I guess I’ll stay in it. But mechanical engineering is one of my favorite things. I love building stuff.”

Garden City Remembers Former Police Commissioner

ormer Garden City Police Commissioner Ernest J. Cipullo died on July 7. He was 83 years old.

Cipullo enjoyed a distinguished 51-year career with the Garden City Police Department, retiring in 2012 as the longest serving police commissioner in the department’s history with 31 years as “The Commish.” Prior to Cipullo’s appointment as police commissioner, he served as a uniformed police officer and was sworn in on April 20, 1961, promoted to sergeant on June 17, 1973, lieutenant on March 20, 1977 and commissioner and chairman of the Board of Police Commissioners on July 2, 1981.

He was the recipient of 27 citations during his service as a police officer.

He earned a bachelor’s degree from Adelphi University and a master’s degree in public administration from Long Island University-C.W. Post.

County Approves Land Grant For Water Filtration

New contaminant filtration system to be built at Christopher Morley Park

T

he Nassau County Legislature voted unanimously to approve a home rule message in support of State legislation that would allow the Port Washington Water District to build a new water contaminant filtration system at Christopher Morley Park.

The Morley Park treatment facility is one of three that the Port Washington Water District is building to filter out 1,4-Dioxane and other emerging contaminants from its wells. In order to build the facility, state legislation authorizing alienation of the County parkland at Christopher Morley is required. The small parcel of unused property is along Searingtown Road adjacent to other service buildings.

The filtration system will feature an Advanced Oxidation Process and a Granular Activated Carbon filtration system, which work in tandem to extract contaminants from fresh water supplies. Identified by the EPA as a “likely” carcinogen, 1,4-Dioxane is a byproduct of manufacturing and is also used as a solvent stabilizer in many household cleaning and beauty products. Welcome To Phase 4 Long Island Congrats, Long Island, we made it to Phase 4. Just don’t get too excited about it.

Starting on July 8, Nassau and Suffolk residents now have more access to the inside of their favorite restaurants as capacities are increased.

Museums and art galleries have the green light to open their doors to the public again. We can once again visit zoos and see our favorite marine animals and fish at the Long Island Aquarium in Riverhead.

Of course, having access to these recreational activities comes with a long list of restrictions that rival a CVS receipt. Social distancing and the ability to keep surfaces clean will limit what can be accessed or open to the public. Capacities will also be limited to between 25 and 33 percent, depending on the venue.

No matter where you go, inside or outside, you will always need to wear a mask.

That is a state mandate for your safety and the safety of the people around you. For me, I start to hyperventilate after 30 minutes in the supermarket with my mask on. I don’t see how I could wear it for hours at a time just to see the penguins at the aquarium.

Of course, after almost four months of being cooped up with the kids, a day trip to the Long Island Game Farm sounds reasonable, no matter the restrictions. Just make sure you pack the kiddies and head out to Manorville early before they reach 33 percent capacity.

They also aren’t renting any equipment, like strollers or wagons. The pony rides are also off limits.

The People Food Café isn’t open for cooked food like burgers or chicken nuggets, but they will sell you snacks and drinks. Unfortunately, you also can’t bring any outside food or coolers. There are exceptions for small snacks or baby formula, just no lunches. Better eat a big breakfast before you get there.

Please understand, I’m not picking on the Long Island Game Farm. Part of the agreement for Phase 4 reopening will need to be done in stages.

Of course, maybe if half of their exhibits and activities aren’t open, they could offer desperate parents a break on the admission fee.

their doors. The days of wandering around the exhibits with the kids and lingering as long as you wish are over.

Tickets need to be purchased in advance for a specific time to visit with 200 spots limited to every hour. There are now one-way markings on the floor to keep you moving, like shopping at IKEA. No more doubling back or crisscrossing across the floor willy-nilly. Most fiveyear-old kids understand that, don’t they? If you want to see something again, you must exit the building (through the gift shop, of course) and start at the beginning.

No more touching the glass or even getting close to it. Only one family at a time can stand in front of the tank windows. All the encounters like the touch tanks and some outdoor shows are canceled.

You can still see the stingrays, but you can’t touch them.

Again, I’m not picking on the Long Island Aquarium, just informing you that Phase 4 may not be all that it’s cranked up to be. There are still so many restrictions that I wonder if it is worth it to venture out of your house.

Maybe you don’t have to.

After all, Phase 4 also allows you to plan and attend gatherings of up to 50 people now.

Since we missed Memorial Day and Independence Day, why not get the old gang together for a weekend? I understand National Chili Dog day is celebrated this year on Thursday, July 30.

Sounds like a good idea to me.

I do my own hair and housework—the latter a little every day. My son does

the major shopping; I order online from pharmacies, pet stores, and department stores that deliver or offer pick-up. My library now has drive-through for pick-up and drop-off and I take advantage

HOMEBOUND BY PANDEMIC The following is in response to a request for information from readers to share how we spend our time homebound because of COVID1-9.

Formerly from Westbury, I now live in Arizona. I have been here full time since 2007, a senior, 81 years old, and a widow. Now that I’m homebound, I find a lot to do— shredding documents and also gardening: vegetables, herbs and flowers, including roses and flowering shrubs.

Sewanhaka Central High School District Board of Education appointed Nichole Allen as the interim principal of Sewanhaka High School effective July 1.

Allen has served as the assistant principal of Sewanhaka High School since 2007. During her tenure, she has made a positive impact in improving student achievement. She is co-creator of the GRAD (Girls: Ready, Able and Determined) mentoring program, a school representative at Apple Inc. and a Dignity for All Students Act (DASA) coordinator.

She is also a member of the district’s Wellness Committee, AIS Committee, Excellence and Equity Committee, Articulation Committee and Eligibility Committee.

Several members of the RotaCare Board of Directors paid tribute to Maureen Clancy as she retired from her duties serving on the board.

Clancy was not only active with RotaCare, she has received numerous awards for her public service over the years including Garden City Citizen of the Year, New York State Senate and Assembly Women of Distinction, Girl Scout Julliette Low Award of Distinction plus two Rotary Paul Harris awards. Clancy was also the first woman to serve on the Garden City Board of Trustees.

The RotaCare Board will miss Clancy’s dedication to the board, volunteers and patients. She was an important part of RotaCare’s mission, which is to facilitate free healthcare for the relief of pain and suffering to those who have the most need and the least access to medical care. The MineolaGarden City Rotary Club is thrilled to join with RotaCare in its salute to Clancy, who has served the club for the past 33 years. Clancy was the first woman to be admitted into the club in 1987 and served as the club’s first woman president from 1993-94.

Even with the pandemic, some high school traditions continue. This spring, a number of Westbury High School seniors signed letters of intent committing themselves to play collegiate sports. Parking lot 4 behind Dark Horse/the firehouse/village hall is completed with the exception of poles, which are expected to be installed by the end of July.

It includes a new fueling station behind the firehouse with a new pump and increased fuel capacity for village vehicles to make sure the village isn’t caught short in an emergency. And it’s both about beautification and also access/ afety. Lot 4 originally had 270 parking stalls and now with the new additions by cross-access and lot layout; there are currently 348 parking stalls. This does not include the fire department section which gained one stall, for a total of 22.

Jordan Margolis, the Levittown Public Schools’ assistant director of special education, was named the new principal of East Broadway Elementary School. He replaces former East Broadway Principal Jeanmarie Wink who retired at the end of the 2019-20 school year.

Margolis, a resident of Babylon, has served as the district’s assistant director of special education since 2015. He showcased his exceptional leadership abilities in this role as he maintained special education programs and services, chaired the social-emotional learning curriculum committee, developed and supported crisis intervention protocols throughout the district and more. Prior to his assistant director position, Margolis was a school social worker at Jonas E. Salk Middle School, where he supported students and their families, along with staff through various programs, services, SEL and character education initiatives.

He began his career as a lecturer at Assumption University in Bangkok, Thailand where he taught English to

Massapequa School District Board of Education trustees Gary Baldinger and Cher Lepre began new terms on July 2 at the annual reorganization meeting. Baldinger was sworn in for his third term, while Lepre was sworn in for a full threeyear term after being elected last year to fill a vacant seat. The board also will keep the same officers for the 2020-21 school year, with Kerry Wachter as president, Jeanine Caramore as vice president and Baldinger as secretary. As is tradition, Superintendent Lucille Iconis also took the oath of office. The meeting was held with limited participants in the board room due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was broadcast live on the district’s YouTube channel.

Recently, through its COVID-19 Community Response Fund and other initiatives, the Community Chest of Port Washington has been helping Port’s most vulnerable families. The Helping Hands program provides volunteers to do no-contact shopping and delivery for seniors and others who have been advised to stay home. The PW Mask Brigade made 2,000 fabric masks for at-risk families. The Port Pantry Supply Squad is providing paper and personal hygiene supplies and our Legal Assistance initiative is matching pro-bono attorneys with outreach families who have been unable to pay their rent.

The Community Chest continues to provide grant support for 25 nonprofit organizations in town who have been providing vital services to residents for decades. They have recently completed interviews with many of grantee organizations and listened to their situations. Many have suspended operations, and ceased generating revenues either from tuition or donations. Many have continued operations, but with additional expenses, and all have indicated that they will need the continued support from the Community Chest. How Will COVID-19 Change My Senior Year?

As we begin to approach August, many students, including myself, are anxious to find out what the 2020-21 school year holds. Will it be in person, online, a hybrid model? The questions circling K-12 students’ minds are all in regard to how COVID-19 will impact their upcoming year.

However, with the pressure of applying to college and wanting a “Port Washington senior experience,” Paul D. Schreiber seniors appear more apprehensive than the rest. Here are just a few reasons why this is.

1. COVID-19 and College Applications Applying to college is stressful as is. Writing dozens of essays, sitting for standardized tests, filling out applications, nagging teachers for letters of recommendation, touring campuses, attending interviews are all stressful tasks to begin. With COVID-19, many of these quintessential steps are changing daily. One of these tasks standardized testing, is greatly changing for the class of 2021 and possibly forever.

The uncertainty of whether or not these events will continue in a safe manner is disappointing for all, as many of them include large gatherings of students and families. Seniors are not the only grade level that face the fear of having anticipated traditions lost, but it is their last chance to experience a proper Port Washington School District send off.

3. Uncertainty Of Sports Seasons Sports are a highlight of many High Schoolers’ experience at Schreiber. Being able to bond with a group of peers, train and compete together is an unforgettable experience for all grade levels. For many senior athletes, their fourth and final season is the one they look forward to the most.

Becoming captain, being able to take more responsibility for the team and having a senior game dedicated to them helps enhance this senior athlete experience. According to the first New York State

Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) COVID-19 task force meeting, NYSPHSAA President and Task Force Chair, Paul Harrica, said, “Having representatives from these offices provide reports today was extremely beneficial to the work that the task force will do over the course of the next few months, From the reports provided, it is clear school district facilities cannot be opened for student participation until Phase 4 is entered. The health and safety of our student-athletes remains our top priority.”

With the unpredictability of fall 2020, students, especially seniors, anxiously await what this will mean for their sports season.

Students of all ages are anxious to get back the classroom and see their peers and teachers. However, we must make sure to continue to ensure our community’s safety, even if this may cause some disappointments.

House Holds Hearing On VA Character Of Discharge Determination Last Wednesday, the House Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Disability Assistance and Memorial Affairs held a hearing on the VA’s character of discharge determination process. In order to receive benefits from

ill Barry knows a thing or two about the importance of timing.

The Floral Park resident made the switch from longtime bartender in the local restaurant industry to founder and co-owner of the recently opened Uptown Taco in Floral Park this past fall when opportunity serendipitously arose when Oak House Mexican Kitchen closed its doors.

“Friends of ours owned Oak House and decided to move to Ireland to pursue their dreams, so it was the perfect spot,” Barry said.

“The Oak House was an authentic Mexican restaurant. We played around with a couple of concepts.

We wanted it to be a place where people could bring their kids or meet up with friends for a drink.”

To fill a niche in the community the concept was born for Uptown Taco, which is family owned and operated by Barry, his wife, Erica, and brother-in-law and sisters-inlaw, Lou and Diane Ventura. The taco restaurant gets its moniker courtesy of its location on Tulip Avenue.

“We always called this area ‘uptown’ when we were kids,” Barry said. “We wanted to tie that local nostalgia into the restaurant.”

The family began renovating the space by incorporating bright colors and original artwork to create a welcoming South-of-theBorder vibe. After updating the

Uptown Taco in Floral Park opened in the former Oak House Mexican Kitchen during the height of the pandemic.

The laidback, family-friendly eatery is popular for its wide variety of tacos. (Courtesy photos) restaurant and securing its liquor license, Uptown Taco was ready to open in late winter. But timing had other plans.

The restaurant hosted a small soft opening on Feb. 29—nine operating days prior to COVID-19.

It ultimately forced the restaurant to close its tables to the public.

“The whole world just stopped,” Barry said. “It was tough. But it

wasn’t just us. It was a little different for us because we had just got started, but it was the whole world going through the same thing.”

Coping With COVID Like Uptown Taco, COVID forced Osteria Morini in Roosevelt Field to abruptly close its doors just as the Italian restaurant was beginning to pick up momentum following its fall

2019 grand opening. With its flagship in Manhattan, plus additional locations in New Jersey and Washington, D.C., Osteria Morini is operated by the award-winning Altamarea Group.

Osteria, which means host in Italian, has spent the last several months re-imagining their safety protocol in the wake of the outbreak on Long Island.

“From the beginning, implementing the highest level of safety protocols was a priority, not only for our clients but for our staff as well,” Fakahany said. “We have trained extensively above and beyond the required regulations, from sanitization and mask requirements to contactless ordering and payments via QR codes.”

In mid-June, as New York entered Phase II, Osteria Morini was able to reopen for curbside pick-up and delivery, serving up some of its

signature dishes such as Cacio e Pepe salad, rigatoni, branzino and tiramisu for dessert.

“Osteria Morini is ready to keep evolving and pivoting with the times,” Fakahany said. “Everything we do begins and ends with our clients, and more than anything, we want to welcome them back through our doors and make it their home away from home.”

Uptown Taco was quick to revamp its business model to cope with the changing times, as well. Initially, takeout wasn’t a significant aspect of Uptown Taco’s services, but the family adjusted to keep the kitchen open to the public, while following statewide shutdown protocols.

“We thought that takeout would only be a small part of the business,

but the pandemic showed us that it is going to be a bigger part of the business plan than we originally thought,” Barry said. “Tacos travel well. It is a food that lends itself to takeout. At first, we were just learning how to be a sit down restaurant and then we quickly had to learn to be a takeout restaurant. Now that we’re in Phase IV, we have outdoor dining, which also wasn’t a part of our original plan.”

A New Way Of Dining Out In late June and early July restaurants across New York were once again allowed to invite diners back with a combination of indoor and outdoor seating, proper social distancing still in place. Uptown Taco, which did not initially have outdoor

seating, was permitted by the village to transform a row of parking spots outside the restaurant into a makeshift patio with tables and an outdoor bar, christened “La Quarantina.” The restaurant is also opened at 50 percent capacity inside.

“It has been busy, the support has been great,” Barry said. “We are new restaurateurs so we weren’t stuck in our ways and we were easy to adapt. We’re the type of people who ask, ‘what’s next?’ It took planning and communication, a lot of late nights, but even though this pandemic made things stagnant, we still wanted to grow.”

While it hasn’t been open long, Uptown Taco, which sources many of their ingredients from Long Island farms, has gained a loyal following. Salt, Tequila, Lime Uncovering the hidden history behind the Margarita

alt, tequila, lime. These three simple ingredients are the cornerstone of the classic margarita. The mix may be straightforward but its origins are murky. No one is quite sure who invented the margarita— though there are many tall tales to theorize.

Among the most common attributions belongs to the Dallas socialite named Margarita Sames. As legend has it, the glamorous Sames concocted the drink for her party guests in 1948. Among the party goers was business titan Tommy Hilton who put the margarita on his eponymously named hotel’s bar menu and on the cocktail map.

Though this was most likely just a rumor. The first importer of Jose Cuervo used the tagline “Margarita: it’s more than a girl’s name” in 1945—three

years before supposedly Sames debuted her cocktail.

Another account of the drinks moniker dates back to the 30s or 40s in Tijuana. The story says that restaurant and bar owner Danny Herrer first mixed the cocktail for showgirl Marjorie King. King, who couldn’t stomach any hard liquor aside from tequila, was in search of a cocktail. Herrer named the drink after Marjorie, or Margarita in Spanish.

No matter who invented it or where the name originations, today margaritas are synonymous with summertime sipping.

A recent study showed that margaritas top the list for males and females when it comes to on-premises drinking at and restaurants — with 56 percent for females and 44 percent for males.

It’s In The Giving That We Receive Last weekend, I took a ride over to Mom’s house for a visit with social distancing. Our new normal consists of Hubby and me standing by our Jeep while Mom and the rest of our family scatter throughout the front lawn at a six-foot distance, or we sit in her backyard with chairs spaced far apart. We don masks, we chat about goings-on in our lives and we enjoy each other’s company. Hubby and I aren’t sure when we’ll ever feel comfortable about entering homes or restaurants with Coronavirus lurking in the shadows, but for now, this feels safe. It was a rough winter for everyone, which meant we saw absolutely nobody until Mother’s Day. Every time we get together, it gets a little easier. It’s a gift that is easily taken for granted.

This weekend was a bit different from other trips to Madre’s home. As we sat in the backyard and chatted amicably about the weather and how lovely her yard looked, we heard a siren in the distance. Mom’s eyes

brighter than his attire. He waved to Mom and offered her a blessing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen her eyes shine that brightly.

Father Ralph’s truck was followed by several other vehicles in a processional line.

Sirens blared as the blessings were bestowed. Mom murmured, “We all can’t go to church. This was the next best thing.” I swear, I’ve never seen her look as happy as she did Patty Servidio on Sunday. It made my heart lit up and her puppy’s ears happy. perked up at the same time.

Mom told me that last week “He’s coming! It was truly inspiring, especially when I saw the joy that spread across my mama’s face.

I didn’t receive a blessing, but my heart felt like it had. Thank you, Father Ralph, for bringing joy to my mom.

The pandemic and subsequent quarantine may have temporarily halted the economy, but it’s brought out the finer parts of humanity, in certain cases. Hairdressers took to YouTube to teach folks how to cut or color their own tresses. Performers offered free concerts online, while hosts of late-night television interviewed celebrities via Google Meet or Zoom. Even the Impractical Jokers began a series of shows, entitled “The Impractical Jokers Dinner Party”, where each of the guys appeared on a quad-split screen with a meal and some hilarious banter. Local news stations offered a glimpse of their homes while filming segments and everyone seemed a lot more down-toearth. Teachers taught lessons from home via Google Meet, something my daughter had

participated in since the beginning. What a joy to hear the joyful exchange of young voices as they eagerly offered their take on the lessons of the day. And then there’s Father Ralph’s approach, which took mass and the art of giving to a whole new level.

When we reflect upon what the quarantine taught us, we have every reason to be grateful. We became creative in our approach to life and work, we became excellent home chefs and bakers, and we learned a lot about ourselves and others in the process. Although Life took a breather, we continued to grow in ways that we couldn’t have imagined. It’s been said that we receive when we give to others. After what I’ve witnessed over the past few months of our nation’s dormancy and especially this past Sunday, I don’t think a truer word was ever spoken.

May we keep the lessons and the growth, that we can bring hope and healing to those whose lives we touch.

There was a time at the start of this year when I lost my powers. Some of you know that I was struck with an almost-fatal case of pneumonia and as I lay in my hospital bed, my powers slipped away. Energy, enthusiasm, sense of humor, prayer, involvement and support for others—all these and more fell victim to a physical condition that pre-dated the coronavirus, but one that had so much in common with the oncoming pandemic.

Maybe I should have been alarmed that I didn’t have my usual engagement with life, but sickness produced its own apathy. It wasn’t until I was on the mend that I felt the frustration of the lost powers.

For three weeks, it didn’t matter to me whether I was going home or not. But during those last three days, getting out of there couldn’t happen soon enough.

In fact, the first “power” that came back was anger.

me that we had just lost our powers. My sense of humor was gone, as was support for others, even prayer—gone (somewhat literally, as our houses of worship were shuttered).

The creative energies that come with engaging one another at work, at school or in other venues were sapped away by rules that kept us apart, languishing in “home-hospitals,” whether we were physically ill or not. And the less ill we were, the more the frustration to get out of there was felt.

We are seeing that in some parts of the country that frustration and anger is leading to foolish and dangerous behavior. And I must admit there was a moment when I was tempted to pull out my IV, get dressed and just walk out of the hospital. Fortunately, on Long Island, most people recognize the value of facial coverings, hand washing and

social distancing. But that doesn’t mean we like it. In fact those masks are covering a lot of frowns these days.

I suppose some of the inner angers in other parts of the country are manifesting themselves as defiance of the rules. In our communities maybe that’s the reason our rhetoric is so angry and divisive. It’s a way to deal with our diminished powers and our desire to get back to normal again. But not a good way.

But as I discovered as I recovered from pneumonia, normal comes slowly and never returns to what it was before. Once we come to accept that, we can decide to let our God-given powers revive again. It does involve a choice: sulk and wallow in anger or give that up and seek the joy of living again.

Barbara’s Garden Thrives At Locust Valley Library

espite the challenges of the coronavirus, Barbara’s Garden at the Locust Valley Library is thriving. Marcy Meyer and Kasturie “Kassie” Miller Roth have continued the Locust Valley Garden Club (LVGC) commitment to maintain the garden. Located off the library’s upper level parking site, it includes a table with benches for munching or watching a game at the tennis courts below.

On Earth Day, April 22, Miller Roth scattered handfuls of the wildflower seed bombs she prepared, hopefully to enhance the wooded hill at the top of the lot. In mid-June, she and Meyer purchased plants for this season at Giordano Country Gardens in Sea Cliff and as arranged, charged the $145 bill to the library.

Both gardeners have the chops to know what to buy and where to place the plants.

Using the growing conditions of percentages of sun and shade, as well as height and color, they chose the “fill, spill and thrill” approach that makes for a visually exciting gardens.

Taking care of the garden means two or three trips a week to water the plants, something both women enjoy.

“Although the library has a sprinkler, it doesn’t reach some of the plants on top, so there is some extra dedication needed,” Miller Roth explained.

Meyer added, “Last year they hired someone to clip the bushes, but this year with COVID-19 issues, we are letting them grow.”

In a 2014 library newsletter, there was a photo of both women along with a caption that said the garden was dedicated to Barbara Kassner,

He explained that his mother was a plant lover and cared for the 30 or more plants set around the library in various places.

“She would water them regularly and repot and replant them. In the summer, those that could go outside were placed where Barbara’s Garden in now. I planted some bulbs and things there once,” he said.

Barbara was an indoor gardener, he said. “She had Jade plants and spider plants and a night-blooming Cereus.”

“She would invite four or five people for a party on the one day a year it bloomed.” (It is a tropical cactus plant that gives off a floral smell with a soft spicy undertone.)

The younger Kassner has a history with the garden.

He’s been doing carpentry work at the library and when the former caretaker left, he took over the job, whose perks included living in its second-floor apartment for 15 years prior to the library building renovation.

The LVGC meets the second Wednesday of the month (pandemics excepted) at 10 a.m. at Bailey Arboretum’s manor house in Lattingtown.

assau County Executive Laura Curran and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone recently shared the results of a comprehensive study analyzing the impact of COVID-19 on Long Island’s economy as well as outlining recovery projections and strategies.

The report, developed by consulting firm HR&A Advisors with support from the Nassau and Suffolk County IDAs, breaks down job losses as a result of the pandemic, revealing that Long Island is shedding jobs at a faster rate than New York City and all other suburban counties in the state. Among other grim statistics, the analysis shows a disproportionate share of the 220,000 jobs lost across Long Island include low-paying jobs, workers with low levels of education and Hispanic/Latino workers.

Howie Rose wants to call a World Series victory in Flushing

owie Rose is ready to head back into the WCBS 880 radio booth.

It’s a few months later than expected, but that doesn’t mean the broadcast legend isn’t ready to do what he does best.

The voice of the New York Mets is entering his 25th year calling the play-by-play action from the Big Apple. But never before has he entered a season with so many unknowns. It is unclear what baseball will truly look like in 2020, and Rose is ready for the challenge.

Rose, 66, brings a local flare to the Mets broadcasts. He grew up in Queens, graduated from Queens College and now lives in Woodbury, which prepared him for the journey to Flushing. Now, he takes a look at what the 2020 season will be like for the Mets, his personal challenges, playing on 9/11 against the Yankees in 2021 and the one thing he wants to do before he eventually puts down the microphone for the final time, which is hopefully not anytime soon.

How different of a vibe do you have going into the season?

It’s a much different vibe than ever before because it’s tinged with trepidation. It’s absolutely loaded with apprehension. It becomes very difficult to look at the season through the normal lenses that we do. I hope, when I get to the ballpark for Opening Day, it’ll feel right without people in the stands and all of the social distancing measures that will make it a different experience than ever before.

How do you approach playby-play duties differently than you have in the past?

I don’t know if I approach getting ready for the game any differently. The timeline might change with how early we get the lineups, when the manager speaks via Zoom, which will make it far more impersonal than ever before. The ability to ask follow-up questions or delve into an individual player’s personal life or deeper into his career will be severely compromised. In terms of getting the nuts and bolts down on my scorecard and being prepared based on importation that’s available to deliver an accurate call of the game, that’s how it’ll go.

What will it be like not having the ability to schmooze with players in the clubhouse?

It makes a big difference. It’s not just the information that we get, but it’s the rapport that you develop.

When you have conversations— however occasional that they are—I don’t like to bother these guys for the sake of bothering them. I want to go up to them and develop a working relationship with them, and that’s where I don’t pry into areas that I won’t talk about on the air.

What are you most looking forward to watching during the season?

Baseball. I’m so starved for it.

There’s a cone of confusion relative to coronavirus of what we can do and can’t do. What’s normal now might not be normal in six months from now. What we lack is

the kind of entertainment that live sports can present. They can call reality television just that all they want, but that’s nonsense. Anytime there’s a camera, producer and microphone around, that ain’t reality and that’s produced. Baseball is not produced. There’s no script. There’s nothing that happens at a baseball game that is the product of being geared to happen unless it’s players performing to their expectations. I just miss that. I miss the spontaneity of baseball. I miss the excitement that sports brings.

How much more important is your role to paint a picture in fans’ heads of what’s happening at the ballpark since you can’t be there?

It’s no more important. It’s 2020 and people have a lot of ways material is delivered to them.

I don’t think our audience will be much different than it usually is, which is people riding in their cars or on an app. I understand there are a significant number of people who just want to listen to a game on the radio, even if it means watching a game on television, but turning the volume down. I don’t see how our jobs, even with the challenges presented, will be different.

Next year, the Mets and Yankees will play on 9/11 at Citi Field. How special will that be 20 years after the attacks?

It certainly has the makings of a very emotional night. In all likelihood, it will be. Life in 2020, in a COVID-dominated world, I don’t know what things will look like in a year and two months from now. I hope fans will be in the stands.

What would it mean for one of the New York baseball teams to win the World Series this year?

It would be wonderful. You can have a variety of opinions about the regular season. The other thing you can’t predict is which players will lose weeks or months or even the entire season to the coronavirus. If we get to October and the opportunity is there to play

a full, normally scheduled playoffs, there will be legitimacy to that. If someone feels that is illegitimate due to the shortened season, then have at it because there is no proclamation and the commissioner doesn’t get up on a soap box to say this season is legitimate or illegitimate. He would say it’s legitimate, but there will be a lot of people who feel otherwise.

What do you think of Twitter so far?

It’s fun. It was motivated by boredom and, at the same time, the disconnect when all sports went dark on the 12th of March. Life was a crater.

It created an opportunity to reconnect with the audience that’s normally there during the games. It was meant for me to go on Twitter when the time was right. I didn’t plan on it happening and we didn’t realize it until a day or two later, but the day I opened my account was April 11. April 11, 1962 was the first day the Mets played their first game in the National League. I didn’t mean to start my Twitter life on the same day the Mets started their baseball life, but it’s kind of cool how that happened. Purely serendipitous.

You were inducted in the New York Sports Hall of Fame and the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. How much do those accolades mean to you as you look back?

I guess it means I’m getting older.

By and large, it’s a validation of my life’s work. Who doesn’t want to be received warmly and positively?

That means I’ve somehow been able to connect with people. If you are at depth in communicating, you will make that connection. If these honors mean I’ve been able to do that, then I’m extremely proud of that.

Who is your biggest inspiration in the broadcast world?

Marv Albert. When I was 13 years A old, I started a fan club for Marv.

It was just after his first year of doing

the Rangers on radio. Through his passion and energy, this was in the 1966-67 season, I paid more attention to hockey than I had to at that point.

Some friends and I were hanging out before school started, and I started a fan club for Marv. I called up the radio station and actually got to speak with him. I went to see him at the station, and as I got more serious about pursuing a career in broadcasting, he became a mentor in every sense.

What techniques did you learn from him that you use to this day?

Everything about how to set the geography of an ice surface, a court or field on the air when you’re doing radio. The importance of being honest and truthful of what you’re seeing. Be truthful about it. Don’t make your listener wonder if you’re giving an accurate portrayal. Do it with some personality and be funny, but in a tasteful way.

Is there anything you want to do in your broadcasting career that you haven’t done yet?

I want to call the final out of a Mets World Series win. That’s the only thing left for me. It would mean everything. It would mean that a kid who went into his parents’ room on the morning of April 12, 1962, the morning after the Mets played their first game, found out the Mets lost, felt disappointed, adopted them as my own, have the great fortune of calling games for the team I grew up rooting for, was part of the broadcast team when the Rangers won the Stanley Cup and to make that call for the Mets World Series winner would tie it all together.

fficially in month four of the coronavirus pandemic, it seems that all of Hollywood has seemed to have hit the pause button on a lot of its upcoming projects. However for music lovers, artists are still releasing new music to help us get through the day. Here are some new songs that have been recently released this past month from some of our favorite artists.

Katy Perry - “Smile”

American Idol judge and popstar Katy Perry recently released her new song “Smile,” which is the title of her upcoming sixth studio album that is released on Aug. 14. The upbeat and positive song actually samples parts of the hip-hop band Naughty by Nature’s 1999 song Jamboree. On the song, Perry sings about expressing her gratitude for the various changes in her life.

Gabby Barrett ft. Charlie Puth “I Hope”

Reminiscent of American Idol winner and country singer Carrie Underwood’s “Before He Cheats,” American Idol alum Gabby Barret has teamed up with singer-songwriter Charlie Puth for her latest song “I Hope,” which has received major radio play in the past couple of months. The pop-country song, which is off Barrett’s debut album Goldmine, has Barrett and Puth sing about being cheated on by their former boyfriend and girlfriend, hoping that their cheating exes also feel the same hurt that they felt if their exes were to get cheated on.

Zoe Wees - “Control”

Singer Zoe Wees is definitely a newcomer to the music scene, who recently released her haunting Goo Goo Dolls - “Fearless” song “Control” that is currently picking up on Multi-platinum Grammy-nominated rock band steam. The 18-year-old Wees, who hails from Goo Goo Doll’s newest single off their 12th studio Hamburg, Germany, sings about her anxiety album Miracle Pill is “Fearless,” which is overtakand actually touches on her long term struggle ing the airwaves currently. The upbeat “Fearless” is with rolandic childhood epilepsy. Eligibility for free meal benefrts based on participation in SNAP, TANF or FOPIR is extended to all children in the household. When known to the School Food Authority, households will be notified of their children’s eligibility for free meals based on their participation in the SNAP. TANF or the FOPIR programs. Other Source Categorical Eligibility: When known to the School Food Authority, households will be notified of any chid’s eligibility for free meals based on the individual child’s designation as Other Source Categorically Eligible, as defined by law. Children are determined Other Source Categorically Eligible if they are Homeless, Migrant, Runaway, A foster child, or Enrolled in Head Start or an eligible pre-kindergarten program.

If children or households receive benefits under Assistance Programs or Other Source Categorically Eligible Programs and are not listed on the notice of eligibility and are not notified by the School Food Authority of their free meal benefits, the parent or guardian should contact the school or should submit an income application.

Other Households: Households with income the same or below the amounts listed above for family size may be eligible for and are urged to apply for free and/ or reduced price meals (or free milk). They may do so by completing the application sent home with the letter to parents. One application for all children in the household should be submitted. Additional copies are available at the principal’s office in each school. Applications may be submitted any time during the school year to the Administration office, 1 McCouns lane, Oyster Bay, NY 11771. Households notified of their children’s eligibilily must contact the Schoof Food Authority if they choose to decline the free meal benefits. Households may apply for benefils at any time throughout the school year. Children of parents or guardians who become unemployed or experience a financial hardship mid-year may become eligible for free and reduced price meals or free milk at any point during the school year.

For up to 30 operating days into the new school year (or until a new eligibility determination is made, whichever comes first) an individual child’s free or reduced price eligibility status from the previous year will continue wilhin the same SFA. When the carryover period ends, unless the household is notified that their children are directly certified or the household submits an application that is approved, the children’s meals must be claimed at the paid rate. Though encouraged to do so, the SFA is not required to send a reminder or a notice of expired eligibility.

The information provided on the application will be confidential and will be used for determining eligibility. The names and eligibility status of participants may also be used for the allocation of funds to federal education programs such as Tille I and National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), State health or State education programs, provided the State agency or local education agency administers the programs, and for federal, State or local means-tested nutrition programs with eligibility standards comparable to the NSLP. Eligibility information may also be released to programs authorized under the National School lunch Act (NSLA) or the Child Nutrition Act (CNA). The release of information to any program or entity not specifically authorized by the NSLA will require a written consent statement from the parent or guardian.

The School Food Authority does, however, have the right to verify at any time during the school year the information on the application. If a parent does not give the school this infonnation, the child/children will no longer be able to receive free or reduced price meals (free milk).

Foster children are eligible for free meal benefits. A separate application for a foster child is no longer necessary. Foster children may be listed on the application as a member of the family where they reside. Applications must include the foster child’s name and personal use income.

Under the provisions of the policy, the designated official will review applications and determine eligibility. If a parent is dissatisfied with the ruling of the designated official, he/she may make a request either orally or in writing for a hearing to appeal the decision. The request for a conference shall not in any way prejudice or diminish the right to a fair hearing.

Only complete applications can be approved. This includes complete and accurate information regarding: the SNAP, TANF, or FDPIR case number; the names of all household members; on an income application, the last four digits of the social security number of the person who signs the form or an indication that the adult does not have one, and the amount and source of income received by each household member. In addition, the parent or guardian must sign the application fonn, certifying the information is true and correct.

Beginning July 1, 2019, students in New York State that are approved for reduced price meals will receive breakfast and lunch meals at no charge.

SPORTS Guidelines Set For High School Sports Return

he New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) is looking to establish proper procedures for a potential return to sports.

As part of this effort to bring back high school sports, the officers decided in their third COVID-19 task force meeting on July 16 that they would delay the start of fall sports until Sept. 21, waive the seven-day practice rule and cancel fall regional and state championships.

If it is determined that fall sports cannot be played in 2020, then another option is to have fall sports played from March 1 to May 8 of 2021.

In the previous two COVID-19 Task Force meetings, guidelines were established that could help prevent the viruses’ spread if teams host summer workouts and provide possible pathways for a safe return to the high school sports season.

One of the more obvious guidelines agreed upon in the first meeting held on June 10, included the decision to enforce face coverings for all athletes and coaches attending workouts, except when an athlete is actually participating in the event.

Additionally, athletes and coaches are strongly encouraged to not make physical contact of any kind or share workout equipment. If necessary, it is suggested that disinfectant should be available for when each athlete is done using the machine.
