Mineola Woman’s Murder 48 Years Ago Still Unsolved

lmost five decades later and Mary Beth Heinz’s murder is still unsolved and her sister Jeanne Heinz is still determined now more than ever to get answers about who murdered her sister.

Mary Beth’s body was discovered on May 10, 1972, near a creek in Rockville Centre.

She had been strangled and had abrasions on her neck and face. Mary Beth worked as a live-in nanny and would come home to her family in Mineola on weekends by taking the bus. Mary Beth was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was young and suffered from grand mal seizures.

Tom Suozzi Cruises To Democratic Primary Victory

ongressman Tom Suozzi (D— Glen Cove) is already focused on continuing the work he’s started in the Third Congressional District of the U.S. House of Representatives.

The former Nassau County executive emerged as the winner of last week’s Democratic primary election, defeating Melanie D’Arrigo and Michael Weinstock. Suozzi took over as the district’s representative in 2017, replacing fellow Democrat Steve Israel, who retired after serving two Congressional terms.

“It was a great night and I’m very happy with the result,” Suozzi said following the election on a Zoom call with a group of reporters. “It’s amazing how many people actually voted.”

In 2016, 20,343 people voted in the district’s Democratic primary. But this year, there were approximately 50,000 votes. Suozzi said 60,000 people requested absentee ballots, with 60 percent returning them in Nassau County. He said at least 36,000 absentee ballots will be counted when everything is said and done. In-person voting consisted of 16,443 ballots throughout the district.

Suozzi cruised to the Democratic primary triumph, earning 56.8 percent of the vote. D’Arrigo, who is considered to be a more progressive candidate, tallied 32.7 percent. Weinstock, a former prosecutor, earned 7.85 percent. The final tally is yet to be determined as absentee ballots have not been fully counted, according to the New York Board of Elections.

“I’ll probably have a big thank you party in the middle of July,” Suozzi said. “We had hundreds of volunteers.

It was very different campaigning in this environment. We made a lot of Zoom calls.”

Going forward, Suozzi said if he’s reelected, he wants to continue what he’s been working on since he took office three years ago.

“I don’t plan on doing anything differently,” he said. “I’m going to try to bring money back to New York and get things done for the people I serve.

In the November election, Suozzi is set to face off against Republican George Santos. Santos, 31, touts his immigrant status as a first-generation American, whose family hails from Brazil. He calls himself “a next generation Republican,” aiming “to bring common sense solutions to Washington for your family.”

While Garbarino was measured in approaching whether to run or not, King’s endorsement did much to solidify the GOP nominee’s resolve.

“At the end of the day, if I wasn’t prepared and ready to do this job, there is no way in hell Congressman King would have been supporting me for this seat,” Garbarino said. “He is one of the most upstanding people. He doesn’t always toe the party line as you’ve seen. He does the right thing for Long Island. Sometimes when I question myself about whether I should do this and feel like I’m over my head, I think to myself if Congressman King is supporting me, I’m doing the right thing.”

With Garbarino and Gordon readying to face off in a few months, they are honing their message to voters regarding their bona fides. For Garbarino, a third-generation local businessman who works at his family law firm in downtown Sayville, it is his four terms that he’s served in the Assembly.

“My time as an assemblyman means knowing the issues,” he said. “In the legislature now, you need to be able to read legislation, how it affects people and thinking outside of the box. You have to think through hypotheticals.

Gordon served a 13-year stint from 2007-20 on the Babylon Town Council and was a former guidance counselor at Farmingdale’s Wilson Technological Center.

But it was her time spent as a 29-year career veteran who served in the United States Army Reserve where she was part of the military police battalion and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel that most shaped her leadership experiences.

“I’m telling you, if it wasn’t for the military, I don’t know what I would have done,” Gordon said. “In the military,

we adapt and overcome— that’s what we do. Whatever we’re faced with, we have to learn how to deal with that situation. Everything I do in my life reverts back to my military training because it’s good. I use it for planning purposes, solving problems and tackling situations.”

St. Peter Of Alcantara School Closes Permanently Diocese of Rockville Centre closes three Catholic schools amid coronavirus

he Diocese of Rockville Centre recently announced the closure of three Catholic elementary schools following financial hardships brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. St. Peter of Alcantara School located in Port Washington, along with two other schools, Holy Family Regional School in Commack and Our Lady of Wisdom Regional School in Port Jefferson are closing at the end of this school year and will not reopen in the fall.

The diocese stated that changing demographics and an increased competition from public and secular private schools has contributed to the decline of Catholic school enrollment nationwide. The pandemic brought a significant burden to these three schools, which were already struggling with enrollment and financial hardships prior to the pandemic.

According to representatives from the diocese, much analysis and discussion at the diocesan and parish levels took place prior to this difficult decision. But after careful consideration, “the enrollment decline, combined with the impact of COVID-19 on both parish offertory collections, tuition collections, and fundraising efforts, made it clear that it is not feasible to maintain these schools financially.”

Documents released by the diocese showed a sharp decline in enrollment at St. Peter of Alcantara for the last several years. “From 2014-15 through the 2019-20 school year, Saint Peter of Alcantara School had seen enrollment decline 52 percent to 99 students in kindergarten through eighth grade and 36 percent to 176 students in nursery through eighth grade. In the 2018-19 school year, the school received more than $220,000 in support from the parish and diocese.”

“We are deeply saddened by the closings of these three elementary schools,” Sean P. Dolan, Director of Communications, Diocese of Rockville Centre, said in a written statement. “COVID-19 has had a significant financial impact on all of the parishes and schools within

the Diocese, resulting in the difficult decision to close these three Catholic elementary schools in order to eliminate the unsustainable financial stress on their parishes. The Diocese of Rockville Centre thanks each and every one of the dedicated and committed principals and teachers, both lay and religious, who have taught in these schools since their inception.”

Monsignor Robert Clerkin, the pastor of St. Peter of Alcantara Roman Catholic Church released a statement to the parishioners regarding the school’s closure.

“I am writing you today to share some sad news,” Clerkin wrote. “This is the most difficult letter I have had to write in my 40 years of priesthood and in my first year as pastor here. I did not make this decision lightly. I prayed long and hard over it. I realize this is a great loss for our parish and our school families, as well as the administrators, teachers and staff of Saint Peter of Alcantara School.”

Clerkin thanked the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary for establishing the school, which was built in 1925 and began with just 70 students. He went on to thank the staff, teachers and school parents for

oody’s Investor Services, a bond credit rating business, which provides financial research on bonds issued by commercial and government entities, revised the City of Glen Cove’s credit outlook from stable to negative in their most recent report released in June. The rating agency changed their outlook for the city due to the potential that state and county aid may be significantly cut this year because of COVID-19.

Moody’s reaffirmed its rating of Baa2 and revised the outlook for the city on the basis that “the biggest risks for 2020 are in aid from the county and state which totals more than $4 million, of which up to $900,000 could be at risk.

Without federal support, management believes the city would not receive the $900,000. However, the situation surrounding coronavirus is rapidly evolving and the longer term impact will depend on both the severity and duration of the crisis. The negative outlook reflects management’s challenges in bringing the city’s budget into balance coupled with a declining reserve position.”

The New York State Comptroller released a financial budget plan in May, which stated the state anticipates budget cuts that “may affect most of the essential services provided by the State, its schools and local governments. The scale of the potential reductions is deeply troubling. As much as $8.2 billion could be cut from aid to localities spending, while large reductions in funding for State Operations are also planned.” Details on what cuts will take place will be submitted to the State Legislature and have not yet been announced.

In May, Nassau County Comptroller Jack Schnirman released an analysis of the potential financial impact that COVID-19 may have on the county’s sales tax revenues. Under the current phased reopening, the analysis indicates “a potential $156.4 million to $360.1 million drop in sales tax for 2020. This would be a decline of 12.25 percent to 28.20 percent of planned 2020 sales tax revenue.”

Details in Moody’s report stated that the City of Glen Cove will “struggle financially over the next three years following a significant decline in reserves last year.” According to Glen Cove City Comptroller Michael A. Piccirillo, “the city receives from the Aid and Incentives for Municipalities (“AIM”) program, which provides state aid to all of New York’s cities, towns and villages and as part of Nassau County’s Local Assistance Program, the City of Glen Cove receives an additional source of aid. Based on initial guidance received from those authorities and information published publicly on the loss in sales tax revenues from both the state and county, which account for a major source of their revenues, for 2020, the city had anticipated approximately $4 million in combined aid from those sources and now is at risk by an estimate of approximately 20 percent related to this funding,” Piccirillo said in a statement.

City Councilwoman Marsha Silverman commented on the report on her Facebook page stating, “I have been calling for long-term planning to build reserves since before I was on the council. I have requested a plan to limit non-essential spending in order to make up the potential shortfall from the state and county aid.”

Mineola Woman’s Murder 48 Years Ago Still Unsolved A

lmost five decades later and Mary Beth Heinz’s murder is still unsolved and her sister Jeanne Heinz is still determined now more than ever to get answers about who murdered her.

“In 1972, I was 12 and Mary Beth was 21,” Heinz said. “I was never really told what happened to her at the time, which of course was understandable, but the more I learned as an adult the more I questioned what happened and why it was never solved.”

Mary Beth’s body was discovered on May 10, 1972, near a creek in Rockville Centre. She had been strangled and had abrasions on her neck and face.

Mary Beth worked as a live-in nanny and would come home to her family in Mineola on weekends by taking the bus. Mary Beth was diagnosed with epilepsy when she was young and suffered from grand mal seizures.

“She left work Friday night and was not found until five days later,” Heinz

said. “One of the newspaper articles stated that she was found dressed, but missing her shoes and pocketbook.

The next month another woman’s body was found at the same spot. I always felt strange about the whole thing. My father was a retired NYPD [officer] and it fell to him to solve the case. I can’t even imagine what it was like for my parents at the time. In the ’80s, I worked with a few NCPD detectives who said they investigated the case and told me, ‘I don’t want to know’.”

After Heinz’s father died in 1994, she tried again to get eyes on the case, but still received no answers. In January 2019, Heinz ordered her sister’s death certificate and sent a FOIL request to the Nassau County Police Department for more information.

“I picked up the death certificate and autopsy report, but the e-mail response from the NCPD was a denial for information [for the FOIL request], but provided me with a number to call.”

After speaking with members of the NCPD and leaving three separate messages, Heinz still hasn’t gotten anywhere about her sister’s case.

“Mary Beth was a super sweet person with a huge kind heart,” Heinz said about her sister. “She loved all the underdogs, children and animals. She always had pet turtles at our summer home in the Poconos and spent endless hours babysitting other people’s children. She always did her hair just perfect and wore matching outfits right down to the jewelry. Although she was often shy, I think it was because she

knew she was different and that was much harder then, than it is now. She never knew when she was going to have a seizure or how those around her were going to respond. I like to think she thought, ‘Dang, if I’m going to have a seizure I am going to look good.’”

Heinz urges others that if they have any information about her sister’s murder to call the Nassau County Police Department Homicide Division at 516-573-7788.

“I want people who knew her in Corpus Christi and Mineola High School to remember the good person she was and to finally know what happened to her,” Heinz said. “Mary Beth was a person with epilepsy, who suffered greatly because of it, but it never stopped her. She deserved the same great life as many of us have. Her life was cut short and no one will give me any answers as to how or why or who.”

Officials Push To Add PPE As Part Of Nassau County Anti-Littering Laws

eople didn’t respond, and Nassau County Legislator Joshua Lafazan (D—Woodbury) is furious. Nassau County has issued several warnings for residents to stop throwing their personal protective equipment (PPE) wherever they feel like, but the streets are simply full of used gloves and masks.

But when people throw masks all over the place, such as in a supermarket’s parking lot, someone has to pick it up. Besides risking the lives of workers in an establishment, dropping one’s PPE anywhere other than the garbage can also endanger wildlife and children.

“As healthcare professionals, we are taught how to properly remove and safely dispose of masks and gloves,” Dr. Eve Krief from the American Academy of Pediatrics said. “The public needs to understand that these are hazardous materials potentially contaminated with coronavirus.”

Lafazan saw this happen one too many times and he’s proposing a change to the county’s littering laws to fine those who are being careless with their PPE. If the law passes, those who violate it are subject to a $250 fine.

“Whether I was at the supermarket in my community or the beach, I would see PPE, such as gloves and

masks, on the ground,” Lafazan said. “At first, I thought it was an annoyance. Then, I spoke to environmentalists and learned about how these items cause significant danger to wildlife. These PPE items actually contain the virus and can spread it.

I spoke to essential workers who are stuck picking them up, so I decided I

wanted to take action.”

Suffolk County recently sponsored a similar bill, which passed unanimously. However, Lafazan’s proposal is sitting still in the Nassau County Legislature. There has still been no vote on the bill.

“A lot of it is a lack of education and people don’t realize these items can spread the virus,” Lafazan said.

“Wildlife and children can be attracted to these items. What happens in the county is that officials would ask the public not to litter these items.

People didn’t respond.

“We have littering laws already, but they’re not working. This isn’t normal litter. This is littering an item that can spread the virus.”

Another proposal Lafazan came up with is to explore the development and implementation of a community service requirement that can be completed in lieu of paying a fine. Lafazan believes the legislature will vote for it during its next meeting.

Garden City Residents Upset Over Giant LIRR Poles

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, the MTA’s third track project is still chugging along through local communities after Governor Andrew Cuomo declared the third track project was an essential service.

In recent weeks, as many neighbors of the Merillon Avenue LIRR station in Garden City and surrounding communities remained home due to the state’s stay-at-home orders, they witnessed PSEG Long Island constructing poles, which are reported to be as large at 120-feet with more than 93 feet visible aboveground, from the view of their backyards and porches.

Last week, Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin, Assemblyman Ed Ra, Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer, councilmen Tom Muscarella and Dennis Dunne, Sr. stood with neighbors in the village to call on the MTA LIRR and Third Track Constructors (3TC) to remove the poles and consider alternatives. They also urged the LIRR to halt construction of all gigantic utility poles along the main line.

(Photo courtesy of the office of Don Clavin) Clavin, Muscarella and Dunne wrote a letter to the LIRR on June 16 in opposition of the poles in part saying to conform to the original plans or to devise an alternative that is acceptable to residents.

“Whatever happens, all we are asking for now is for 3TC to temporarily halt construction of the poles and revisit other options,” Clavin said. “These communities should not have to stare at monster poles in front of their homes if there are other alternatives. We need to put a stop to it now.”

3TC explained that there were late design changes to the size and location of at least four poles, which are located adjacent to the Merillon Avenue station at Nassau Boulevard and Weyford Terrace. 3TC, who are the design-build contractors for the project, said that the approval of the design change for the poles was not required since the poles are owned

by PSEG-LI that are placed within LIRR property.

On April 8, the village’s Third Track Committee of the Board of Trustees sent a letter to the MTA/

LIRR raising grievances to how the project had been progressing.

In the letter, the village raised concerns over many project-related issues, including the fact that it was never asked or consulted with the placement of the four to five metal 120-foot high utility poles between the bridge at Nassau Boulevard and Weyford Terrace. The village said that it was their understanding based on prior MTA/LIRR representations that “all poles west of Nassau Boulevard to New Hyde Park Road would be on the north side of the main line.”

The village asserted that the installation of the poles is in direct conflict with prior discussions with the village and the EIS for the third track project. The village has also retained legal counsel—Beveridge and Diamond—to assist it with reviewing its options with respect to the placement of the utility poles along the third track. If the board determines to pursue legal action, it would need to protect possible legal arguments and advice that it receives, and therefore the board will not discuss many matters in public.

Numerous PBA members contracted COVID-19, McDermott related, “but thank God, nobody died. We had a couple that came close.”

Turning to the pins and bars, the union head said, “You know what they say: it’s the little things in life. Getting this bar is exactly that—it’s a recognition for a job well done. I’m so proud of all our cops, detectives and supervisors for the work that they did during COVID and continue to do. It’s not over yet.”

McDermott thanked the legislature for the gesture and “for not forgetting about us during our time of need.”

Members of the majority caucus were joined by representatives from the county’s health care, police, firefighters, medics and first responder community to unveil a new recognition for those that served on the front lines of this health battle.

According to a press release, “These pins and bars are the first items being presented to first responders and healthcare workers for COVID-19 service by any local government in New York State.”

Young Eco Warriors Spread Green Messages

ith Earth Day celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, PSEG Long Island created the “I Am EM-Powered! Public Service Announcement (PSA) Student Contest” and invited third through sixth graders to participate through their schools.

The contest was set to open in early March and end in early April, with winners announced around Earth Day on April 22. The end result was that 142 PSAs were submitted by eight teachers from 35 classrooms in five districts on Long Island and in the Rockaways. Then the coronavirus hit— schools physically closed and teaching went viral. And while a number of school districts pulled out of the program, Hicksville and Oyster Bay-East Norwich teachers, who had submitted upwards of 100 entries between them, chose to go forward.

It was a crucial enough directive that SEG pivoted and changed the project from a contest to an activity that had more of a learning component to it.

“The topics of conserving natural resources, reducing dependency on fossil fuels and seeking renewable energy sources are paramount, especially to this generation,” PSEG Long Island Director of Customer Experience and Utility Marketing Suzanne Brienza said. “We are so pleased that despite the unusual circumstances the coronavirus pandemic created for educators, many still were able to apply the lessons of our Earth Day Public Service Announcement video contest to engage students in being advocates for protecting and saving the earth.”

A distance learning guide was quickly created to help teachers modify their lessons for this assignment to accommodate this project. The utility hired D. Barrett Associates, known for its creative, quality-driven, efficient programs and resources for educators, to develop the PSA activity entitled “I Am EM-powered—A Celebration of Earth Month Program.” Students were able to create videos in a science of social studies setting with classmates or as individuals, enlisting family members if they wanted. And rather than asking teachers to choose only their top videos to submit as winners, all submissions were welcomed.

In the Oyster Bay-East Norwich School District, several of the students enlisted siblings and parents to participate in the assignment. One of the pupils was 11-year-old Madeleine Ruiz, a rising sixth grader at Oyster Bay’s James H. Vernon School, who recruited her folks to help with the heavy lifting. With the theme revolving around conserving electricity and water, storyboards were created, the video was shot on an iPhone, mom played a cameo sleeping on the couch and the younger Ruiz wound up

editing the video on iMovie. It proved to a great bonding experience for the aspiring filmmaker and her parents.

“I thought the idea of making a video PSA was cool because recording a video, editing it and also telling other people how to save the earth sounded fun and I wanted to do it,” Madeleine said. “We started talking about shutting off lights and the TV, switching to LED bulbs, taking shorter showers and not wasting water in class, but these were all things I was being told to do at home. Having my parents help me shoot and act in the video with me was really fun. I am happy we could do it together as a family.”

Frank Somma, a Vernon School fifth-grade teacher, marveled at how the students were able to adapt to remotely working on this project versus being able to do it on site with their instructors and classmates.

“We began the projects right before schools closed,” Somma recalled. “The students were very upset, but became very excited once I told them we were still going to complete them. I gave them the option of working alone with family or contacting their group members to collaborate together. They all took amazing initiative and used

their expertise with technology to their advantage. I am so pleased with the final pieces of work they handed in.

We really look forward to participating again next year.”

Over in Hicksville, students and staff were equally entranced by the I Am EM-Powered project. One of the participants was Adiyat Hussain, a rising sixth-grader at Hicksville Middle School interested in science and engineering.

While Hussain had no experience with video and editing prior to doing this assignment, he was helped with it by technology teacher Nicholas Nacarrato.

The 11-year-old shot it on his iPhone, edited on iMovie and enjoyed the whole process.

“My teacher said we’re likely going to run out of fossil fuels in our lifetime,” Hussain said. ”It’s strange to think that something I rely on so much will one day disappear. To pass the time, I started thinking a lot about how we can reduce fossil fuel consumption. When I got this assignment, I was excited about making the video and being able to tell people about renewable energy sources like solar, wind and geothermal. I think it is nice that people want to protect and save the earth, and to make sure we don’t run out of things we really depend on.”

Nacarrato was equally pleased by the experience.

“I can’t begin to tell you how much I enjoyed this program,” Naccarato said. “This program will now be part of my future curriculum. Understanding energy conservation and protecting our environment is a large part of these students’ futures. For students to become aware of renewable energy options, the depletion of fossil fuels and the importance of preserving our natural resources at this age, and then being encouraged to create educational Earth Day PSA videos on these topics is outstanding. We appreciate the opportunity to work with PSEG Long Island to help spread these invaluable messages.”

igh school graduation ordinarily includes teenagers sitting on stage at the Tilles Center wearing their cap and gown awaiting the finale of their high school career.

However, given the unprecedented situation of the coronavirus, the Great Neck Public School District had to improvise.

This year, graduates of both the North and South High Schools participated in a drive-in graduation event.

On June 22, SHS families attended the premiere of their virtual graduation at Bar Beach. The following evening, NHS families did the same to watch their own graduation. The virtual graduation was broadcasted on a 50-foot screen allowing all attendees to watch regardless of their position in the crowded parking lot.

An overview of the Class of 2020 shows that 586 students graduated from the three district high schools.

Specifically from the NHS, 264 students graduated. From the SHS, 312 seniors graduated. Lastly, from the Village School, 10 seniors graduated.

Both high schools’ videos included speeches from the Town of North Hempstead councilmembers, speeches from administrators, speeches from class advisors, as well as remarks from the senior class officers. Since several school employees are retiring from both NHS and SHS, students who formed a bond with the retiree spoke about the legacy of the individual and expressed their appreciation and well wishes.

At the finale of the event, all the families watched the video footage of each student receiving their diploma envelope at a previous drive-by graduation. This gesture was in place of the Tilles Center, as it recognized each student in the senior class.

In light of the difficult academic year seniors have experienced, it is with hope that each graduate still feels special and accomplished at the conclusion of their senior year.

The world will be changed by those who are passionate about what they do. Because in order to shape the future of tomorrow, you first must make change today. And it is virtually impossible to make change—to identify a problem, create a solution and overcome all the obstacles in your way—if you’re not passionate about what you’re doing.

We hear plans for change from executives of major companies. From presidents of universities. From school superintendents and executive directors of nonprofits and so on. But how come so

passion, you love what you do.

When you have passion, what you do becomes a part of you, and there’s no quit in you.

And it’s these rabble rousers—these change makers and status quo breakers—who affect the changes today to make the future they wish to see tomorrow.

We, the next generation, are the largest, most educated, and most diverse generation in the history of this nation.

And as UNESCO notes, there are over 3 billion people in the world under 30 alone.

Think about what we can accomplish if 3 billion of us ran with our passions. All those things we talk about being impossible? World peace, eradicating hunger, curing disease, educating every child? It’s all possible.

I leave you with one of my favorite quotes, from James Bryant Conant: “Behold the turtle. He makes progress only when he sticks his neck out.”

Whatever cause you rally behind, this world needs you to stick your neck out. And when you do, we need you to do so with passion.

Back To The Beaches I have a confession.

I’ve been sneaking out of the house and going to the beach during the pandemic.

Apparently, I’m not alone, as I have encountered many others with the same idea.

Maybe it’s because I’ve been working from home since March 11th or the weather is starting to turn in the right direction. Either way, like most of you, I just need to get out once and a while.

I’ve been visiting Jones Beach (Fields 2 and 6) and finding a secluded spot in the parking lots. Once settled, I take out my tail-gating chair and relax in the sun with a nice cigar.

Sometimes I’ll bring a book to read, other times a newspaper and do the crossword puzzle.

Of course, I can do the same

Young, old or families with children, people are starting to come out in the fresh air.

For the most part, they are doing it safely.

My wife and I recently visited TOBAY beach. It’s the first time I had been on the beachside in many years. I’ve been to the restaurants many times, but not to the beach itself. Man, have things changed.

Curran Addresses Safety Concerns Due To Firework Complaints

assau County Executive Laura Curran was joined by Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, Veteran’s Services Agency Executive Director, Ralph Esposito, and Nassau SPCA President Gary Rogers to address safety concerns after a surge in fireworks complaints, and announce a new crackdown on the sale and delivery of illegal fireworks in Nassau County.

In response to a 400 percent increase in reports of illegal fireworks sales, County Executive Curran announced a new email tipline, FireworksSales@ NassauCountyNY.Gov for residents to report the illegal sale or delivery of fireworks in Nassau County. The email tipline will be operated by the Nassau County Department of Consumer Affairs, which will work directly with the Nassau County Police Department as needed to investigate and resolve complaints.

“The spike in illegal fireworks is creating safety concerns in our communities.

If residents want to report illegal sale of fireworks, they can email us at FireworksSales@ NassauCountyNY.Gov,” Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said.

“Over the course of the July 4 weekend and Holiday, The Nassau County Police Department will be intensifying patrols to respond to illegal firework displays.

Residents can call 911 to report any fireworks infractions and police will respond to the location. We wish all a happy and safe holiday

weekend,” Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, said.

The Nassau County Police Department has received 1,277 calls of illegal fireworks being set off, a 400 percent increase over the same period of time last year when only 242 complaints were filed.

Fireworks are known to

trigger real harm for Veterans experiencing PTSD. Nassau County is home to one of the largest veteran populations in the country (approximately 52,000 vets). 12 percent of Gulf War (Desert Storm) Veterans experience PTSD each year. That number rises to about 15 percent among Vietnam Veterans and as high as 11 percent to 20 percent for Veterans of Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

Nassau County would like to remind residents that fireworks awareness and prevention are important issues to discuss with their families.

The possession, use, or sale of fireworks, including sparklers, is a violation of New York State Penal Law, and may be punishable as a misdemeanor or a felony. Parents should talk with their children about the destructive outcomes that can occur from playing with fireworks.

COMMUNITY POLICE BLOTTER Assault Arrest Eighth Squad Detectives report the details of an assault that occurred on June 9, at 10:25 p.m. in Farmingdale.

According to detectives, officers responded to a call for a gunshot victim on Poplar Avenue. Upon arrival officers located a 23-year-old female victim with a gunshot wound to her right shoulder. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her non-life-threatening injuries.

Detectives have determined this was not a random act.

Detectives report the arrest of 20-year-old Avery Palmer in connection with the incident.

The Amityville resident is charged with first-degree assault, first-degree reckless endangerment, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property (firearm),

second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm, first-degree criminal use of a firearm and aggravated criminal possession of a weapon.

Man Arrested For Forcible Touching The Second Squad reports the arrest of a Mount Sinai man for forcible touching that occurred on March 10 at 11:15 a.m. in Muttontown.

According to detectives,

Mark Gresser, while acting in his capacity as a podiatrist, forcibly touched a 42-year-old female patient. The incident occurred at the NY College of Health Professionals. After an investigation, Gresser was arrested on June 23.

Gresser is charged with two counts of forcible touching. He was arraigned on June 23.

The board of the Music Academy Foundation recently announced the 2020 recipient of the Robert E. Bowen III Memorial Scholarship, Austin J. Velez.

Velez is a graduate of Mineola High School pursuing a career in music education this fall at the University of Delaware. He was an active member of many music organizations while in high school, including the A Cappella Club, Marching Band, Jazz Ensemble, Mixed Choir, ACDA High School Honor Choir, Pep Band, Tri-M Music Honor Society, and a regular participant in school musicals, usually as a leading role. Velez is a vocalist as well as a trumpet player and section leader in Mineola’s competitive marching band. While being an integral part

The Nassau County Police Department reports the details of a rescue that occurred on June 23 at 10:45 a.m. in East Garden City.

According to police, officers responded to Covanta, located at 600 Merchants Concourse for a call for a male that fell through a roof. Upon arrival it was determined a worker fell through a hatch on the roof, falling approximately 20 feet onto another tier of roofing. Emergency Services Unit officers responded to the scene and with the assistance of the Westbury Fire Department were able to remove the victim, 53, utilizing the fire departments ladder truck and rescue basket.

The victim was transported to an area hospital with serious head trauma. A LEVITTOWN Senior Sierra Cullen from General Douglas MacArthur High School was recently recognized by U.S. Lacrosse with the prestigious Jackie Pitts Award. The Jackie Pitts Award is presented annually to one senior female student-athlete from each participating U.S. Lacrosse chapter for athletic excellence, leadership and outstanding contributions to her community. Cullen was recognized as the Nassau County recipient.

She would have been a three-year starter and was about to be named captain of the 2020 team until the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. She served her community as a volunteer at Winthrop Hospital and continued to work as an essential worker at McDonald’s during the current pandemic. Cullen will attend Molloy College in the fall where she will play lacrosse and study nursing.

Herricks High School seniors received an untraditional send-off on June 11, when members of the board of education, administration and staff distributed themselves several feet apart along the building’s roads. Seniors were driven by their parents and circled the driveway for a “clap out” that signified their completion of a challenging final year in the district.

The students rode in decorated cars and were met with applause, cheers, banners and more from their district leaders and favorite teachers. “Herricks Strong,” a theme that the community has embraced throughout the pandemic, was evident in the form of enthusiasm and pride. Lawn signs personalized for each student were displayed outside the Community Center and taken home by families following the clap out. Special thanks to the third precinct and the Garden City Park and East Williston Fire Department for their assistance at this event.

Long Island Lutheran Middle and High School recognized the achievements of its outstanding students at its virtual convocation Chapel. Among those honored was Stewart Manor resident Francesca Morabito.

She received a National Honor Society Award and a Star Honor Roll award. Membership in the LuHi Chapter of the National Honor Society is granted to those students who have been highly rated by faculty members in the areas of character, leadership and service and who have an 85 or better cumulative average.

MANHASSET Members of the American Legion, and the Manhasset Sportsman’s Club recently gathered at the Town Dock to conduct the 71st Annual Blessing of The Fleet.

The day’s events were directed by Co-President Doug Weston of the American Legion. The honor guard consisted of Larry Tuck, Leon Jankowski members of the Legion, and Pete Prudente Glen Cove Volunteer Fireman and Director of the Manhasset Bay Sportsmans Club. The throwing of the wreath was marked by the President of the Sportsman’s Club, Joe McVeigh, and the all-important blessing was completed by Pastor Charley Vogeley, of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior and Chaplain of the Port Washington Fire Department. Pastor Vogeley delivered the Invocation, the ceremonial throwing of the wreath into the bay to remember those souls lost on the waters, the benediction, and the raising of the flag occurred before the gun boat summoned all to pass by the Town Dock and receive the blessing. There were 122 boats blessed, as counted by member Vinny Della-Iacono.

ROSLYN Six students from Roslyn High School competed in the NSPC Health Science Competition. Lianna Friedman, a senior, captured first place and the accompanying $5,500 price in the Medicine and Health category. The sophomore team of William Xu and Jacob Ramsey won second place and competed in the Behavioral Science category with a project they did under the guidance of Andrea Pearlman. Finally, Roslyn seniors William Borges and Makenzie Komack took seventh and eighth place respectively in the Bioengineering category; each will receive $500.

MASSAPEQUA Massapequa High School senior Nick Bianco was recently presented with the Special Achievement Award from the Nassau Track & Field and Cross Country Officials Association, the first time it’s been given out in 30 years. The award recognized Bianco for his accomplishments both on the track and in the field, as well as for the qualities of scholarship, leadership and sportsmanship. He was unaware he was even nominated for the award until the plaque was delivered to his home. The last athlete to win the Special Achievement Award was Jay Fiedler in 1990, who would go on to become an NFL quarterback. Bianco will go from the Chiefs to the Buffaloes as he will join the track and field team this fall at the University of Colorado Boulder. He said one of the reasons he chose the school is because six of the seven coaches are former Olympians in their respective events.

For the first time since their school shut down in March, members of the Class of 2024 were able to gather June 16, capping the school-centered activities with a “bike parade” from Rushmore Avenue Elementary School to the Carle Place Middle/High School. That morning, a “virtual” moving up ceremony was held to mark their passage to the high school.

HICKSVILLE Members of Hicksville Middle School and Hicksville High School robotics clubs, under the direction of adviser Catherine Temps, and with support from the Hicksville JBirds Team 1468 Booster Club, used their drive and determination to help others during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using their own devices, students from both school clubs (including former club members and former students) produced personal protective equipment and assembled snack bags. To date, the clubs together created 600 face shields and assembled 953 snack bags, which they have delivered to 15 nursing homes, hospitals, fire rescue units and food pantries throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties. Students created face shields using their own 3D printers and a shared file. The Booster Club collected funds to purchase the contents of the snack bags.

FARMINGDALE Over the past weeks, faculty and administrators from Farmingdale School District—wearing masks and staying six feet apart—personally delivered hundreds of congratulatory signs to high school seniors and middle school 8th graders. With the pandemic disrupting so many pre-graduation milestones, educators have been doing all they can to keep their students’ spirits lifted and make sure they get a special send-off.

To mark the culmination of their elementary education and advancement to the secondary level, families of fifth grade students drove them to the school to receive their certificates in a manner safe for all in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic. The students, eager and well-prepared to enter H.B. Thompson or South Woods Middle School this fall, beamed with excitement as they prepared

to officially become middle school students.

Many cars were decorated with banners, balloons and messages displaying congratulatory wishes for students and gratitude for teachers.

Students waved from car windows and sunroofs as they paraded in front of the school buildings. The celebratory atmosphere brought both smiles and tears of joy.

Students were presented with a certificate to recognize their achievement as they advanced from elementary to middle school, and principals and faculty wished them well as they ended quite a memorable school year and prepared to continue their educational journeys at the middle school level.

The cast, which are friends in real life and have even been known to playfully troll each other’s Instagram accounts, didn’t hold back their heartbreak when the show concluded with Ross and Rachel finally getting back together after a whirlwind romance no one could look away from—He is her lobster, after all.

As the series wrapped, Aniston emotionally stated, “We’re like very delicate china right now and we’re speeding toward a brick wall.”

But a show with this much staying power can’t stay away for too long. Following in the footsteps of several other popular ’90s sitcoms such as Full House and 90210, Friends is rumored to be headed for a reboot.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the six original stars, along with the creators of the show, are in talks to reunite on HBO Max, HBO’s new streaming service that includes shows and movies from HBO and Warner Bros, among others. The Friends reunion special was originally supposed to air on HBO Max this past May when the streaming service was making all the episodes of the sitcom available. However, due to the coronavirus, they weren’t able to film the special and will try to film the reunion this August if it is indeed safe to film in studio.

f you don’t know who SpongeBob Squarepants is, you must be living in a pineapple under the sea. For the past 20 plus years, SpongeBob has charmed and swam his way into the homes and hearts of millions, and still going strong.

SpongeBob SquarePants is the brainchild of marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg and premiered on Nickelodeon on July 17, 1999. The series takes place in the fictional town of Bikini Bottom and chronicles the adventures of

energetic frycook SpongeBob SquarePants (Tom Kenny, who also voices SpongeBob’s pet snail Gary), SpongeBob’s dim-witted best friend Patrick Star (Bill Fagerbakke), the disgruntled and depressed Squidward Tentacles (Rodger Bumpass), cheapskate and owner of the Krusty Krab—Bikini Bottom’s most popular restaurant—Mr. Krabs (Clancy Brown), the tiny and maniacal Plankton (Mr. Lawrence), thrill-seeking and athletic squirrel Sandy Cheeks (Carolyn Lawrence), and other nautical creatures.

As the fifth-longest running American animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants’ popularity has made it a media franchise. It is the highest rated series to air on Nickelodeon and is Viacom Media Networks’ most distributed property. The show has even spawned a toy line that is spearheaded by Alpha Toy Group, a Broadway musical, and has had two theatrical releases with a third one on the way—The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run—that is set to be released in early 2021 on Video On Demand due to the recent pandemic. The film was set to be in theaters this past May. Many of the series’ ideas originated in the comic book The Intertidal Zone, which Hillenburg created in 1989. Interestingly enough, SpongeBob was originally going to be named SpongeBoy as the series was set to be called SpongeBoy Ahoy! Both of these were changed as the name was already trademarked.

Most fans of SpongeBob SquarePants would remember classic episodes such as “Sailor Mouth,” where SpongeBob and Patrick learn profanity after reading dirty words on a dumpster and ultimately get in trouble when they curse up a storm. Who could forget “Chocolates with Nuts,” which showed SpongeBob and Patrick becoming entrepreneurs when they become chocolate bar salesmen and are chased around town by a crazed chocolate fiend. Or how about “Frankendoodle” when SpongeBob created the ultimate prankster and troublemaker DoodleBob after he and Patrick find a pencil and begin to draw with it.

GLORIA EDNA ERHARDT

Gloria Edna Erhardt - An incredibly talented artist from an early age, Gloria was accepted into the High School of Music and Arts, one of five special high schools in the NYC area for gifted students, where she graduated with honors and went on to Pratt Institute to further her art education.

It was at Pratt Institute where she met her future husband, Richard Thomas Erhardt, an electrical engineering major. They married on April 2nd, 1955 at New York City’s Little Church Around the Corner.

Gloria opened a small graphics design/advertising studio. Known for work that was very much of it’s time, her style has been described as the “quintessence of mid-century modern.” During this time, she designed packaging for Q-Tips, Vaseline and Prince Matchibelli just to name a few.

And during the heyday of her studio, it was common for there to be upwards of five or more of her illustrated ads in Life magazine.

At the end of the sixties, she sold her agency in order to focus on being a fulltime mother to her two children.

She lived in Manhasset, until her relocation to the Atria in Huntington Station.

She is survived by her two children, her son the Rev. Dr. Richard Erhardt, her daughter Mrs. Eloise Thompson and grandchildren Peter and Daniel Thompson. She is also survived by her older sister, Ms. Rosalie LoCurcio.

Although she attended the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, there will be no memorial service.

Robert Joseph Tovar, 97, of Glen Cove, NY, passed away on June 20, 2020 at his son’s residence in Palm Coast, Florida. Robert was born on November 26, 1922 in New York, NY to the late Harry and Rebecca Tovar.

He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Plane Captain during WWII. Robert graduated from City College of New York with a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical engineering. He retired at the age of 62 as a professional engineer working for private industries. He then worked for The Government Defense Logistics Agency and retired at the age of 74. Robert volunteered with the City of Glen Cove for 5 years until he turned 80. He was President of the CCNY Alumni Class of 51’.

Joe Suozzi On Path To Flushing

oe Suozzi is ready to live out a dream. The Glen Cove native and son of U.S. Congressman Tom Suozzi (D—Glen Cove) wasn’t selected in the five rounds of the MLB Draft recently.

However, the younger Suozzi, who attended Boston College, signed with the New York Mets shortly after the draft as part of the MLB’s revised selection process.

The MLB shortened the draft to just five rounds this year, enabling hopefuls to sign with teams for $20,000, which is exactly what Suozzi did.

“It’s really surreal,” Suozzi said on a Zoom call with the media last week. “It was kind of a pinch yourself moment.

The Mets have had some notable local players over the past few years, with the likes of Steven Matz (East

Suozzi was in the middle of his third season with the Boston College Eagles before the COVID-19 pandemic ended his season quickly.

“You can’t do anything about it, so I just try and stay busy,” Suozzi said. “I just achieved a lifetime goal playing with the Mets, so that’s

nice but it’s a little bittersweet.

Obviously, I’m so excited to play for the Mets organization, but it stinks how it ended at Boston College.”

In 15 games prior to the season’s end, the outfielder hit .414/.471/.638 with one home run, four doubles, three triples and 16 RBI. He also had a 14-game hit streak.

Over his three seasons with the Eagles, the smooth-swinging right-handed hitter registered an .830 OPS and showed improvement in each season. In 2019, Suozzi hit .282/.363/.423 over 48 games.

While the former Chaminade High School player is thrilled to be playing professional baseball, that alone isn’t going to make him content. It is time for him to prove he can play in the majors, making the most of this $20,000 deal.

“When I walked on to the Boston College baseball team, I wasn’t satisfied just being a walk-on,” Suozzi said. “I really wanted to play. I think I

have that same attitude even amplified now. I don’t just want to say that I’m part of the Mets organization. I want to rise my way up through the organization, and I believe I can do that.”

While he hopes to make a name for himself in the baseball world, his father is well-known in the political realm as he represents New York’s third Congressional district in the House of Representatives.

Prior to that, the Democrat was the mayor of Glen Cove and served as Nassau County executive.

The younger Suozzi is now going to try to make the family known in the world of baseball, with the shot of getting to play for his favorite team just a few miles away from the home he grew up in.

Suozzi has a long road ahead to get to that point, but if he gets to don orange and blue at Citi Field, he’ll be living a dream that even most major leaguers never get to.
