Residents Create Petition Against Proposed 7-Eleven

ore than 500 residents have signed a petition to stop a 7-Eleven from opening on a busy street in Port Washington.

The proposed 7-Eleven would be located at 1020 Port Washington Blvd. at the corner of Port Washington Blvd. and Main Street in Port Washington.

Residents feel the proposed 7-Eleven, a former Capital One Bank, will draw increased traffic and safety concerns in the area.

Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte stated in an email to her District 6 constituents that the applicants plan to appear before the town’s Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) for a conditional use permit for a retail food store in the Business-B zoning district, as well as variances for insufficient parking stall size (eight of the 14 spaces are 9x18 instead of the required 10x20) and rear yard setback (garbage dumpster is 5’ from the property line instead of the required 15’).

The applicant filed an application to the Town in October 2020. The town then issued an omission letter to the applicant in December. The applicant refiled their application in February and a disapproval letter from the Building department was issued later that month. Councilwoman Dalimonte’s office then received an email in March from the applicant’s attorney requesting a list of civic and neighborhood organizations whom they could meet with to discuss the proposal. The town provided the listing and requested that the applicant schedule Zoom meetings with the community.

before the board for a hearing. The BZA will render the final decision on the matter, rather than the town council. At the time of publication, the application did not appear on the BZA’s agenda for either the June 2 or June 16 meetings.

The Care2 petition entitled “Protect Port Washington from 7-11” was created by “the Concerned Residents of Port Washington and Surrounding Areas,” and listed several concerns regarding the proposed convenience store. The petition cites traffic congestion, an erosion of the character of the area and an increase in the lack of safety for pedestrians in the surrounding area due to an increase in vehicle traffic as reasons for why they feel this is a poor choice for the location.

“A 7-Eleven at 1020 Port Blvd. will increase traffic and introduce unsustainable volume to an already busy intersection in town,” the petition states. “It will force cars to divert and take side roads through our neighborhoods. Residents are already stressed by increasing cases of local traffic failing to abide by basic rules of the

road (stopping at stop signs, observing speed limitations, yielding to pedestrians); any increased traffic further endangers our community—both pedestrians and drivers.”

Residents who signed the petition left comments stating their disapproval of the proposed store.

“This is absolutely the wrong business for Port Washington and especially at this location,” one signer of the petition wrote. “No one who cares even a little bit about the fabric of this special town would support this proposal. In addition, the intersection in question is already extremely busy, with traffic moving from many different and confusing directions. The crossing guards do an excellent job under high stress. In addition to shoppers, hundreds of students cross that intersection everyday. It simply is not safe for any business of this nature to be allowed to open up at this location.

Say no to 7-11.”

Another signer wrote, “As a PW native who now lives in a town with a 7-11, I can say it definitely creates

dangerous traffic situations for cars and pedestrians. There is also too much litter generated by this type of store.

Keep the corporate vibe away. Support the local businesses.”

Many signers reiterated the same sentiments stating that they have concerns that a convenience store in this location would lead to a fatality due to the heavy car and pedestrian traffic and the constant comings and goings of cars visiting the store.

One resident commented on the petition stating, “The proposed 7-11 will compound an already overcrowded intersection. There are several local merchants who already provide services that the proposed 7-11 would supply. I have lived on this peninsula since 1966, absent those years those years in school and training. I feel strongly that a 7-11 at the corner SW corner of PW Blvd and Main Street is bad for this community...”

7-Eleven initially filed an application with the Town of North Hempstead last year to take over an abandoned automotive shop on 260 Plandome Rd. in Manhasset. However, residents vehemently opposed the project, creating a petition that garnered more than 1,500 signatures. The application was later withdrawn by the applicant.

Who’s On The Ballot For Local June Elections

lections are coming up in the villages of Sands Point and Manorhaven on June 15. Here’s a quick look at who’s names will be on the ballot this year.

Manorhaven’s three open seats are contested this year. Incumbent trustees Rita DiLucia and John Popeleski are running against Vincent Costa,

whom ran for Mayor Jim Avena’s seat in 2020 and John DeLeo Jr. Village Justice Peter Gallanter resigned earlier this year and James Roman was appointed village Justice.

Roman will be challenged by Christian Alfaya.

In the village of Sands Point, Mayor Edward Adler will not be seeking reelection after serving 30 years on the village board. Trustee and Deputy

Mayor Peter Forman is the nominee for mayor and is running uncontested.

Two trustees are also running unopposed. Jeffery Moslow is seeking reelection, challenging him is resident Elena Karabatos. Katharine Ullman is not seeking reelection.

Elections in the Village of Manorhaven and the Village of Sands Point will take place on June 15 from 6 Village of Sands Point Mayor Edward Adler will not be seeking reelection. a.m. to 9 p.m.

South Maryland Avenue Named S.F. Falconer’s Way

.F. Falconer’s Florist has been a pillar in Port Washington for more than 100 years. Located in the same location on South Maryland Avenue, for over a century, the wellknown Florist has serviced many of Port’s families, whether for wonderful occasions, as graduations, baptisms, weddings, holidays, as well as sad events of family members. The family dedication of giving personal attention, allowing needs of individuals to be taken care of, and contributing to so many of the town’s organizations has never wavered. Those who have known the Falconer’s know that they have a personal touch, like no other.

Satisfaction is their goal; commitment, the key.

The founder of the firm, Simon Frederick Falconer was a native of Scotland who came to America in 1905. He was born in Auchenblae, Kincardinshire, Scotland. His wife, Mary, was born in 1886 in Sterlingshire, Scotland. When they came to United States, they traveled throughout the country, and finally settled in Port Washington. They took residence in a small house on South Maryland, which today is part of the store erected on that site. He first found work in Jericho, and later at the Harry Guggenheim Estate in Sands Point as its head groundskeeper.

He was a treasured worker for the Guggenheims, and once the decision to resign and go into business for himself, Mr. Guggenheim gave him his full support.

In the fall of 1920, the Falconers bought the house, and the corner property across, and built the first greenhouse, when they opened for business. That greenhouse was a gift of the Guggenheims, as a parting gift, who were also enthusiastic business supporters of Falconer’s. That greenhouse is still in use today as part of Falconer’s florist shop. In 1928, they built their second greenhouse on that lot at the corner of South Maryland Avenue and Maple Street.

In 1935, Mr. Falconer, as a productive and successful trades man, furthered his entrepreneurship as he built his third greenhouse next to his home, with a general office in the front. He was labeled by his contemporaries as a painstaking and industrious merchant. He was a ‘stern Scotsman’, who worked daily in a suit and tie.

In the fall of 1920, the Falconers built the first greenhouse.

Ernie Simon, long time writer for the Port Washington News said of Simon, “There was something very captivating in his manner that brought him many friends and made him known as one of the prominent citizens of the community. He was a strong booster for the betterment of the community and could always be depended upon to do his part in helping to create an outstanding community.” He was a member of the New York Florists Club, Manhasset Bay Sportsmen’s Club, Port Washington Masons Lodge, the Methodist Church and the Port Washington Lions Club.

After his death in 1960, the business was taken over by his son, Frederick, who carried on with his wife, Dorothy. As a notable florist, Fred, Sr., rose to levels of leadership within the floral industry. Fred, Jr. remembers traveling into New York City to prepare the International Flower Show at The New York Coliseum, which was a convention center that stood at Columbus Circle

Falconer’s Florist has been in the family for generations. in Manhattan. He remembers his father as a ‘prominent, knowledgeable, caring, leader’ in the field he was most passionate about.

“People knew him,” Fred said.

“He taught me well.” His Dad was a member of Flower Hill Hose Company in the Port Washington Fire Department, and followed the footsteps paved for him with many other activities in town.

Fred, Sr., retired in 1980, and Fred, Jr. took over the business. He is an interior plants cape designer, whose knowledge of varieties of plants and flowers is incredible. He is compassionate with customers and is keen on what is needed. His love of the Port Washington community is second to none. His generosity and community involvement all relates to his Grandfather’s dedication.

Mariann Dalimonte, Councilwoman for the Town of North Hempstead, said of Fred, he gives from his heart, “no one pays him to do it, but he just does it.” Fred has been known to donate bows to cheer up the senior

class last year during the pandemic, provide centerpieces for the Pride In Port Community Dinner, contribute numerous gifts for raffles for different organizations of the town, and balloons for various occasions. He is a 48 year member of Flower Hill Hose Co. #1 of PWFD, and presently serves as a Trustee. He is Treasurer of the Port Washington Benevolent Exempts Association and is ViceCommander of the American Legion. He has served on a multitude of committees, and was recently named as the 2019 Community Chest of Port Washington’s Citizen of the Year. He has also been a member of the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce, the Port Washington Lions Club, Cancer Care, the Port Youth Association, The Pride In Port Committee and Port’s PAL program.

His devotion to this town has been noted as “one of the most caring and generous contributors of Port Washington.”

Fred’s General Manager Sean Beckert, who has worked at the store for 42 years, had an incredible journey with the Falconer’s.

“Fred is a generous man,” Beckert said. “We have seen so many wonderful customers and generations support the business, throughout the years, and we feel we know so many personally. I have so many wonderful memories of Fred’s Dad, and mom, and I have always felt like a member of the family.”

On Saturday, June 5, the Town of North Hempstead officially renamed the first two blocks of South Maryland Avenue “S. F. Falconer’s Way.” The petition was started in January by the Port Washington Fire Department, which honors the business and family for the more than 100 years of honorable and prominent business to Port Washington. Several generations of The Falconer family have been proud members of the Port Washington Fire Department.

Mr. Falconer indicated that he is humbled to be recognized.

“I am so appreciative to be honored by my brothers and sisters in the Fire Service, by the Town of North Hempstead, and especially by the community members of Port Washington. It has been such a rewarding and enjoyable career. I look forward to continuing to give back to the town that has given my family so much.”

Students Participate In Climate Awareness Garden

he Climate Awareness Garden is a Residents Forward project, located on Campus Drive next to Schreiber High School. Since April, Wednesday afternoons are alive with activity and plants as local Weber and Schreiber students lead elementary age participants in gardening and related activities. Working in the garden students have the chance to grow vegetables, study our food system and learn how they can address climate change.

On a recent Wednesday, the topic was composting. One of the middle school leaders, Tessa Timpone, questioned the elementary students about what they had learned. One told her that meat and dairy cannot be composted. Another explained that over time, the food scraps put into the compost bin break down thanks to decomposers like worms and that in time, those food scraps become fresh soil. Introducing these ideas to young students is a wonderful way to grow future environmentalists.

has been running the participants have been learning about many topics around how what we eat contributes to climate change.

“We want to help by planting fruits and vegetables,” one student explained. “Fruits and vegetables use less resources.”

Others eagerly added that meat requires a lot more energy to produce than vegetables and also releases much more greenhouse gas emissions than vegetable production.

This year’s program has been made possible primarily thanks to funding from the Environmental

North Hempstead Unveils Student Artwork Honoring Frontline Workers N

orth Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth, along with the Town Board, unveiled an art display at North Hempstead Beach Park, Michael J. Tully Park and Martin “Bunky” Reid Park in North Hempstead, honoring the heroic efforts of frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The North Hempstead Strong: Reflections and Messages of Hope During COVID-19 Virtual Quilt installation will be located at the Town parks through Friday, July 23.

“The extraordinary dedication of our first responders, medical professionals and essential employees deserves to be recognized, and we were so touched that so many of our wonderful students here in the Town of North Hempstead took the time to write such poignant messages,” Bosworth said. “We are eternally grateful for the sacrifices made by all essential workers who risked the health of themselves and their families to keep us safe. The pictures weaved together on these virtual quilts are a beautiful way of saying thank you to our community from our

In March, the town also unveiled a commemorative monument at Town

n the hallways of power in the state capitol, there are interest groups for every type of cause.

Strangely, no one advocates for the roads.

That was one revelation at a press conference called on May 28 to tout a sharp increase in road paving funds in the fiscal year 2022 state budget. In the parking lot of St. Brigid/Our Lady of Hope School in Westbury, County Executive Laura Curran and state Senator Tim Kennedy of Buffalo were joined by Long Island Democratic senators Anna Kaplan, Kevin Thomas, James Gaughran and Todd Kaminsky.

It was Kaminsky who noted that, “In Albany, there are lots of special interests who lobby for particular funding for something. There is really no road interests. It’s up to us to battle for that,” and went on to give Kennedy—the chair of the Senate Transportation Committee—plaudits for advocating for record increases in funding.

“No matter who you are or where you live, there’s one thing that unites all New Yorkers together—we all

“Once roads are repaved, how long are they supposed to last until they need to be repaved again?” a reporter asked.

Nassau County Department of Public Works Commissioner Ken Arnold said the time frame was 10 to 12 years.

“How will it be determined what roads are paved first?”

Curran was asked. “[The county] is responsible for most of the main arterial roads in the county and we have a whole phased strategy

of repaving based on need,” she replied. “When I first got into office, infrastructure had been neglected. That is why we’ve been so aggressive. In 2019, I believe we did 212 lane miles and we’re responsible for about 1,500 lane miles, so that’s about one-seventh of all lane miles. Last year, we did about 172 lane miles. This year, with the pandemic, I’ve asked the team to get to 150. That was the goal last year. Perhaps they’ll surpass it again.”

She added, “It’s prioritized.

It happens in phases. And we map it all out years and years in advance.”

In response to another question the county executive stated to laughter that the public is not shy about requesting roads to be fixed.

Added Curran, “People are confused in Nassau because we have such a confusing patchwork of municipalities.

Gaughran pointed out that there were some communities in his district—which spans both counties—whose roads hadn’t been paved for 30 or 40 years or more.

“Many of these communities don’t have the money. So this is vital,” he said.

A broader cross-section of customer support including new residents and officer workers, new storefront uses and experiential retail that offers experiences/services not available online will be key to attracting those customers.

The study also offered 11 recovery interventions that include short-, medium- and long-term goals for stabilizing downtown businesses, creating flexibility for the new normal and supporting longterm downtown growth.

The recommendations aim to accelerate recovery through new, innovative approaches as well as tried-and-true long-term investments.

For Long Island Regional Planning Council Chairman John Cameron, the blueprint offered by this study is a solid baseline to work from in helping drive the recovery of an important cornerstone of the Long Island economy.

“Each of Long Island’s downtowns are critical in driving our regional economy,” Cameron said. “Combining creativity and determination with the full support and vision of our local and regional leaders will ensure that each of our downtowns will have a speedy and sustainable recovery.”

Bral, Trustees Are Unchallenged

illage of Great Neck Mayor Pedram Bral will have the easiest of paths to reelection this year—he is running unopposed. So are trustees Annie Mendelson and Steven Hope. All are campaigning under the Village Alliance Party line. Election Day is June 15.

Bral, 51, who emigrated from Iran in his teens, upended four-term Mayor Ralph Kreitzman in 2015. It is believed that about a quarter of Great Neck’s 10,000 residents are of Iranian (or Persian) extraction, many originally coming after the overthrown of the Shah in 1979. The vast majority, like Bral, are Jewish. Bral has won two contested elections since first winning office.

The mayor has presided over the switching of the public lighting system to LED lights—reportedly saving the village about $100,000 per year—and the reduction of a structural deficit he inherited. Last March, as the pandemic gained strength, he declared a state of emergency in the village, prohibiting outdoor gatherings.

Bral’s bio lists him as “Director of Minimally Invasive Robotic Gynecologic Surgery, a division he developed when he joined Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn.” In a candidate statement before the 2019 election he claimed that he “brought new, vibrant businesses into the commercial district on Middle Neck Road and made the village government more accessible

and responsive to its residents.”

Mendelson, first elected in 2015, serves on the Architectural Review Committee and is a representative to the Manhasset Bay Protection Committee. According to her 2019 candidate’s statement, she “works as a software product manager for Refinitiv, formerly Thomson Reuters. She had previously worked in the defense and software industries, before getting her teaching certificate in 2003. She then taught math at Great Neck North High until 2013.” She emphasizes improving

the quality of life in the village.

Hope was appointed by Bral in 2017 to replace then Deputy Mayor Ray Plakstis Jr., who resigned for health reasons. Hope moved with his family from South Africa as a young man and developed a love of the village’s parks and schools, with his three children making their way through the school system. A property manager, he “oversees office buildings, retail and multifamily dwellings. Previously, he worked for Sy Luba HVAC in Great Neck and an electrical contractor. As a property manager, he uses his expertise to advise the board of trustees in issues related to construction and the improvement of the village business district.”

Village Justice Mark Birnbaum, in office since 2013, is defending his four-year seat against David Kirsch.

Birnbaum served as a village trustee from 2002-13 and was commissioner of the Great Neck Senior Housing Authority and chairman of the Great Neck Village BZA. Kirsch has been the managing partner at his own practice.

A former assistant district attorney in The Bronx, his profile states that he specializes in criminal defense law and estate planning, among others.

Plainview Honors Portledge School Set For Expansion Charles Wang The Nassau County Local Economic Assistance Corporation (LEAC) has approved the issuance of tax-exempt bonds for the Portledge School in Locust Valley.

This low-cost financing option will enable the school to make the most of its planned $12 million investment to expand and create a 20,000 square-foot addition to the school’s west campus that will serve as the institution’s athletic and wellness center.

“LEAC’s ability to provide favorable financing terms

for institutions such as the Portledge School allows them to maximize their investment, which ultimately benefits the students,” said Nassau LEAC Chairman Richard Kessel.

The construction of the 20,000 square-foot athletic and wellness center addition is projected to be complete within one year of the initial groundbreaking, which is slated for Spring of 2021.

The construction of this new facility will also increase the amount of classroom space, providing the school with an opportunity to

service more students. In addition, improvements will also be made to the parking area which will improve traffic and pedestrian safety.

Delores Quintyne Honored By Farmingdale State College

armingdale State College (FSC) recently announced that it will rename one of its original campus buildings in honor of Delores Y. Quintyne, a community activist and civil rights pioneer in the Town of Babylon and across Long Island. Conklin Hall—a center for student activities—will become Delores Y. Quintyne Hall at a campus ceremony scheduled for June 15.

“This is a great honor and one that completely surprised me,” Quintyne said. “Thank You. This is really special. I never thought of myself as deserving of such an honor. I am humbled by this recognition. I am proud and grateful because this recognition demonstrates that my life’s work has made an impact. I have tried to work hard so that others might thrive and excel.

As the great John Lewis said, ‘Get in Good Trouble’, which is what I did. I’m truly blessed and honored.”

FSC President John Nader explained the decision that led to the renaming.

“When the college embraced the idea of naming a campus building in honor of a local activist and civil rights leader, Delores was a clear and inspiring choice,” he said. “Her legacy should never be forgotten. The college is honored to recognize Ms. Quintyne for her tireless and effective advocacy for equality and justice.”

Quintyne has been a resident of Amityville for almost 60 years. She has been a civic leader and a trailblazer for civil rights. Her achievements include calling attention to, and ultimately improving, the deplorable living conditions of migrant workers at Long

Nader and College Council Chair Patricia Hill Williams began conversations about the rededication of the building more than a year ago. State University of New York leadership embraced the idea. Chancellor Jim Malatras stated, “Ms. Quintyne’s story is an inspirational one, and her activism is deserved of being celebrated for all who step foot on your campus to see.”

• Six distribution circuits upgraded in Kings Point, North Hills, Massapequa, Mitchel Gardens, Lake Success and Rockaway Beach to improve circuit reliability.

• 37 transmission system circuit breakers added or replaced for enhanced system reliability.

Storm Hardening Programs Completed Since the implementation of the FEMA-funded storm-hardening program funded in 2014, PSEG Long Island has completed storm hardening and reliability work on more than 450 miles of distribution mainline circuits. Storm-hardened circuits have seen a significant reduction in storm damage and 42 percent fewer outages.

Curran Announces Major Steps To Improve Police Transparency And Diversity

N

assau County Executive Laura Curran recently announced the purchase of 2,500 state-of-the-art body worn cameras for police officers to wear while on patrol, as well as the formation of Police Diversity Committee to review current police hiring practices.

Both initiatives address issues outlined in the Nassau County Police Reform and Reinvention Plan, which was approved by the Nassau County Legislature with bipartisan support. The adopted plan, born out of more than 120 public input sessions, enhances transparency, accountability and robust community-oriented policing policies in the Nassau County Police Department.

The camera technology, which will be worn by uniformed police officers while they are on patrol, as well as

by supervisory staff, is expected to be fully implemented before the end of the year.

“This is an important step that enhances transparency and promotes greater accountability in the police

department,” Curran said. “We are committed to building further upon the well-established trust that the Nassau County Police Department has already established with the communities they protect and serve by implementing this critically important investigative tool.”

Island Tech Services of Ronkonkoma was selected to provide the Nassau County Police Department the cameras, along with training, technical support and the ability to seamlessly upload encrypted evidence to a secure cloudbased system from about 400 police patrol vehicles.

Curran began evaluating equipment options last June by issuing an official Request for Expression of Interest (RFEI) to gather the most up-to-date information from the vendor community on programs, equipment and costs. Vendors were then invited to give presentation of

their products and services to members of the police unions, as well as representatives from the Nassau County District Attorney’s office, Nassau County Police, Information Technology, Management & Budget, Minority Affairs and Shared Services departments.

To expedite transparency in policing, the county’s final purchase is being made from New York State’s Office of General Services competitive price list.

The BC-03 body worn cameras that were purchased are extremely durable and lightweight, weighing less than 5 ounces, and includes high-definition video and high-fidelity audio.

The cameras are manufactured by Getac, an industry leader in body worn cameras with General Electric technology, and produce these cameras for a wide range of police forces from Springfield, MA to Israel. The estimated

cost to fully implement the police body-worn camera program by the end of the year is approximately $5 million.

In addition to the Nassau County Police Department, the county also includes 20 independent local police departments falling under incorporated village or special district jurisdiction. The 2020 Nassau County Shared Services Plan, under New York State’s County-wide Shared Services Initiative (CWSSI) law, applies to these other municipalities if they are interested in the joint purchasing of equipment and shared record storage, by mutual agreement.

The camera program is moving forward and formal discussions with the PBA on a stipend are ongoing.

ast year’s graduating Class of 2020 was robbed of major milestones in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. High school seniors finished their final class on

Google Classroom. Nearly half of this year’s graduating Class of 2021 students faced the same upheaval with many students opting for hybrid or fully remote learning models.

Still, in these times of loss, we find

ways to rise together. Car parades honoring this year’s graduates are commonplace on Long Island, a community that demonstrates how to show in a crisis time and time again. While some schools and campuses have decided to reinstate

Parag Mehta Named President-Elect Of Medical Society I

nternist Parag Mehta, MD was elected president-elect of the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) on May 1. Mehta is the senior vice chairman of the department of medicine and the chief medical information officer at New York Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital (NYPBMH). In addition, he is an associate professor of clinical medicine at Weill Cornell Medicine.

A graduate of NHL Medical College in Ahmedabad, India, Mehta completed his residency in OB/GYN at NHL Medical College and his residency in internal medicine at New YorkPresbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn. He is board certified in internal medicine, hospice and palliative care and integrative and holistic medicine. He has taken courses in health information technology from Cornell University and artificial intelligence from MIT Sloan School of Management.

for the New York Chapter of the American College of Physicians (NYACP) for Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island. In addition to MSSNY and NYACP, he is a member of AMA, Kings County Medical Society, American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin and Indian Medical Association.

In 2011, NYACP awarded him its highest honor, the Laureate Award, in recognition of his extraordinary contributions in the areas of governance, quality, public policy and education.

As a physician wellbeing champion, he promotes wellness and engages discussion through grand rounds.

Mehta’s many contributions to MSSNY include service as councilor, assistant treasurer, vice president, commissioner of the membership division, chair of the future task force for infrastructure/organization, chair of the international medical graduate committee, and young physician councilor. He presently serves as councilor for Kings and Richmond counties and as a New York Alternate Delegate to the American Medical

Association.

Mehta has been involved with the implementation of EHR at New York-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital for the last 16 years and has helped the institution to reach HIMSS Level 7. In this role, he brings IT and clinicians together to improve the user’s experience based on the user’s input.

Mehta lives in Manhasset Hills with his wife, Isha Mehta, MD, who is chief of gynecology at Elmhurst Hospital and is a founder of “A Stitch in Time,” an organization that treats gynecological conditions at no cost to women around the world. They have two daughters, Ruju, an environmental engineer and Setu, a pre-med student at Harvard College.

Preventing elder abuse

Everyone has a role to play in protecting older adults. Advocates seek to raise awareness of the problem among doctors, bank employees and law enforcement. The general public, too, are urged to know the warning signs: • Unexplained bruises, broken bones, burns, cuts or scars.

When it’s time to act

Seniors who are being mistreated may be too ashamed or afraid to talk about it. They may not want to get a relative in trouble. They may fear retribution from the abuser. And they may believe that the abuser is their only source of care.

If you suspect an elder has been victimized, reassure them that it is not their fault. Explain that you are concerned, and offer to assist them in getting help. Report your concerns to the appropriate adult protective services agency. You can find contact information on the website of the National Center on Elder Abuse (www. ncea.acl.gov).

Elder abuse is sometimes perpetrated by a stranger A random robbery, a scam telephone call, or a “friendly stranger” who works their way into the senior’s life for bad purposes. But sadly, said Balbera, experts report that most elder mistreatment is at the hands of a “trusted other”—perhaps a family member, a friend, a neighbor or a financial advisor.

Though the risk of elder abuse increases when an older adult is dependent on others due to mobility

• Poor hygiene, dirty clothes, unusual weight loss or bedsores.

• Withdrawal from normal activities and relationships.

• Sudden change in an elder’s financial situation.

• Depression and signs of trauma.

• Belittling, threats or other power abuse by caregivers.

lder abuse isn’t a topic anyone enjoys discussing, but it’s important to talk about it.

“Experts estimate that 10 percent of older adults are victims of elder abuse, yet only a small percentage of cases are ever reported,” said Gregg Balbera, president of Right at Home Nassau Suffolk.

Balbera explains that elder abuse includes: Physical abuse Use of physical force that results in illness or injury; restraining an older adult against their will.

Emotional or psychological abuse Insults, threats and other behavior that causes mental pain; isolating the individual from other people.

Sexual abuse Involving the person in forced or unwanted sexual contact.

Neglect and abandonment Failure to provide food, shelter, hygiene, medical care and other basic necessities of life.

Financial exploitation Theft, forgery, stealing from an older person’s bank account or retirement benefits; fraud; improper use of guardianship or power of attorney.

Gerontologists also say that social isolation is a top risk factor for elder abuse, giving World Elder Abuse Awareness Month 2021 increased significance. Balbera said that stayat-home orders have curtailed many of the services that keep older adults connected to the world outside their homes. Economic insecurity has raised instances of financial abuse. And scammers have been out in full force, taking advantage of the fears of older adults to sell them useless treatments and cures, or to scare them into divulging personal information that allows the crooks to access the elders’ bank accounts.

Balbera also pointed out that if an elder neglects their own well-being, which might be due to dementia, poor health or substance abuse, this is considered self-neglect and also should be reported so the person can be helped.

r. and Mrs. Louis Kavoussi of Manhasset proudly announce the graduation of their daughter, Adriana Kavoussi, MD, from SUNY Downstate Medical School, where she graduated with AOA honors and humanitarian award recognition. Adriana has joined the profession of medicine like her brother, her father, two grandfathers and a great grandfather. Her grandparents, the late Dr. and Mrs. Joseph Pennisi, were long-time Manhasset residents.

Adriana is directly a fourth generation physician. She is also a 16th generation physician on her maternal grandmother’s side of the family. Her great grandfather,the late Dr. Ottorino Memmoli, MD, of Jamaica Estates, was the 13th generation of physician from Rome, Italy.

Adriana is the first woman in the family to “break the glass ceiling” and become a

physician, with the exception of her cousin, Dr. Maggie Furlong Burns, MD, MHS class of 2012.

NURSING HOME STAFFING LEGISLATION Nursing homes throughout New York would welcome the opportunity to have unfettered access to qualified staff, however, we oppose this one-size fits all legislation because it ignores the fact that New York does not have enough qualified workers to meet the mandate and it fails to provide enough funding to pay for the costs of the mandate.

Staffing is a highly complex issue that is comprised of multiple clinical variables that are unique to each nursing home and its resident population. The simplistic staffing ratios in this legislation do not in and of themselves improve the quality of care.

This legislation is based on outdated pre-pandemic 2019 staffing data and ignores the findings of Cornell University in the Department of Health August 2020 minimum staffing study that highlighted New York’s long-term care workforce crisis.

On top of New York’s nursing home workforce shortages, the state continues to underfund nursing home care. The average cost of providing 24-hour nursing home

care in New York is $266 per resident per day, but the state only pays an average of $211 per resident per day—or $8.79 per hour. New York’s chronic underfunding of Medicaid directly inhibits a nursing home’s ability to recruit and retain workers when hospitals can always pay nurses more.

If legislators were sincere about addressing the long-term care workforce crisis, they would hold public hearings and implement measures to meaningfully recruit and retain workers into long-term care and increase Medicaid reimbursement to nursing homes before imposing unworkable staffing mandates that are detached from reality.

Abstain From Alcohol With Liver Disease Alcohol associated liver disease is the most common cause of cirrhosis in the United States. Since the start of the pandemic, hospital admissions for alcohol associated diseases have increased nationally by 300 to 400 percent. Long Island is not immune from this frightening trend and our hospitals have seen similar rise in admitted persons with alcohol issues.

Perhaps the most concerning statistic is that the majority of these admissions are in people, men and women, aged in their 20s through 40s. Young people!

Many of them already have developed cirrhosis and its complications including acute alcoholic hepatitis. Many, because of their continued alcohol use, will not be candidates for liver transplantation if their livers fail.

Alcoholic hepatitis is a clinical syndrome. Patients usually seek medical attention with a multitude of complaints such as nausea, pain over the right upper area of the abdomen, low-grade fever, or jaundice. On examination, the liver is enlarged and tender to palpation. When blood testing is done, the liver tests are elevated and the bilirubin is high. Survival is 50/50 and many patients progress to liver failure, bleeding and death. Mostly,

For father-daughter duo Gary and Stephanie Pollino, of Plainview, this commencement season is even more special as both will receive Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees from Widener University’s School of Nursing in Pennsylvania.

Gary, a 15-year health care veteran, added: “It doesn’t happen too often where the parent and child get to graduate and walk together,” Gary, a 15-year health care professional, said. “That’s been an exciting highlight of life. I’m so proud of Stephanie but now I get to experience it with her, hand-in-hand walking next to her at graduation.”

Gary is earning a BSN through Widener’s online RN-to-BSN program. Stephanie is earning her BSN through Widener’s undergraduate

More Is Still Needed To Bring Back Subway Riders The return of two million plus daily subway riders is good news. More still needs to be done before three million plus more return. Resumption of round-the-clock New York City Transit subway service is just the start. The Big Apple has always been a 24/7 town. More people work different hours from the old 9 to 5 decades ago. There are still other outstanding issues to be resolved before most of the five million plus pre-COVID-19 ridership will return. Many former riders will continue telecommuting full or part-time and may never come back.

Riders remain concerned about criminal activity, homelessness and periodic vandalism. This needs to be dealt with if the MTA wants to see a return to pre-COVID 19 ridership numbers. Have the police deal with more important issues than immigrant vendors selling churro and other products underground.

It is time to return to the days when a transit police officer was assigned to ride each train and others patrolled stations. This, along with

Crafting And How The Sweater Finally Got Made Crafting is a wonderful hobby, an excellent way to pass the time and a way to keep one’s hands busy to prevent mid-meal snacking.

Crafting has been a tremendous part of my life. My mother taught me how to knit, crochet and wield a needle in the fine craft of embroidery. I learned to sew garments that had been torn, how to create flocked furry animals with the help of a sewing needle and thread and was able to teach myself how to use a Tunisian crocheting hook.

These skills enabled me to save money by creating gifts for others and left me with a sense of accomplishment, especially if the item I had created required a significant amount of time.

When my husband and I were still dating, he mentioned that the comforter on his bed was at least 10 years old, which enabled me to clearly visualize the perfect Christmas gift for him. It took me at least a month, but I was able to create a twin/full-sized quilt on my old Brother sewing machine and by hand-sewing the quilt in areas. It had been my first attempt, which left me with a true feeling of satisfaction when I finished the project. My husband was thrilled with the gift and stated that it kept him warm and cozy. We saved the

It will also be my last as it took a long time to complete. The commitment made enabled me to gain a sense of accomplishment, especially since I have several unfinished projects in a bag, which may end up as scrap yarn for smaller projects in the future.

Hubby just finished a craft of his own. A friend of ours offered two large slabs of wood from a tree he had removed from his property.

After multiple layers of

polyurethane and a set of hairpin legs, his beautiful end tables have added warmth to our living space. Much as our ancestors did before him, he created something with his own hands. The fulfillment that is derived from a project’s completion is more important than the perfection of the craft. Crafting is truly an expression of oneself, a way to put a piece of one’s soul out there. When the job is done, there is no other feeling quite like it.

To AC Or Not To AC When is it considered too early to turn on your air conditioner?

There is no hard and fast rule, I guess. Depending on the weather, you might need to give it a try in April. I know we’ve turned it on once or twice in April, haven’t you?

Central air people, like me, just flip the switch, calendar be damned. Our bodies are programmed for AC. Others may use their AC to help cool their bedroom or living room, but we use central AC to survive.

Next time you are at a dinner party in a home without central AC, take note of the people sweating. I bet they all have central air in their homes.

My house is set to 68 degrees all year long. Somehow, that temperature keeps me warm in the winter and cool in the summer. When you enter my house, prepare to shiver. We affectionately call it “The Meat Locker.”

I spent my entire childhood without air conditioning.

While living in Brooklyn, we had a giant fan in the living room window that could have simulated hurricanes on a movie set. But I wasn’t allowed to blow air into the house, only out. My parents had me convinced when the fan blew hot air out from one window, cool air came in through the open window.

I would get into big trouble for allowing the fan to blow in while I watched TV. Within minutes, my mother would appear, yelling and screaming.

My theory was simple; if cool air came in when you blew out the hot air, how much cool air would come in if you blew it in?

Apparently, my parents weren’t interested in scientific theory.

Oh, but those few minutes of

bliss. The force of the air blowing on me was such a relief. I was told more than once that having a fan blowing directly onto my body was not good for my back. In retrospect, decades later, maybe they were right?

We struggled for years in our new home with wall units in both the bedroom and living room. By erecting a sheet in the hallway, we could “direct” the cool air from our bedroom and push it into the kid’s bedrooms with a strategically placed fan.

We made the investment into central air about 20 years ago. It was a luxury we felt we couldn’t do without. It was expensive, but I could not live without it.

Once you have central air, you can never go back. People will tell you how their wall/ window units keep their homes very comfortable. They don’t see the need for cooling every room in the house 24 hours a day. Really? Keep telling yourselves that.

When the temperature inside my house gets up over 72, I feel like I can’t breathe. Even Louie the Labrador reacts when it gets over 70. He’s like our canary in a coal mine, panting and breathing heavy. As soon as that condenser kicks on, he returns to normal.

We turn our Massapequa home into a meat locker when it starts to get hot outside, regardless of what the calendar says. It also comes in handy when you can’t open the windows due to pollen.

Maybe I secretly blame my parents for my obsession with air conditioning. I know when my mother visits, she complains about how cold it is inside. I tell her to bring a sweater. Evelyn Ortiz Named Youth Of The Year Each year the Boys & Girls Club of Oyster Bay-East Norwich selects one outstanding member to represent the Club as the “Youth of the Year,” as part of its Member Recognition program, generously sponsored by the Quinn Family Foundation. The club is proud to announce the “Youth of the Year” for 2021 is Evelyn Ortiz.

On May 24, Ortiz competed against over 25 other outstanding youth in New York, and was first identified as one of three finalists in the completion and later announced as the ”New York State Youth of the Year.”

In addition, Ortiz was awarded a $10,000 scholarship. She now moves on to the next phase of the competition to compete against other state winners from the Northeast to compete for the title of “Northeastern Youth of the Year.”

Ortiz joined the club as a teen in 2017 when her younger siblings, Brianna and James, became members.

Her parents were both out of the house in the afternoon, and they wanted a safe place for their children to go after school.

As a teen, Ortiz felt a little old to be at the club and often found herself asking counselors if she could help.

She was a natural teacher and with so much experience taking care of her younger siblings, she fit in perfectly at the club as a member of the Torch Club for teen volunteers. Her positive

When asked who she admires most, she said, “My mom! She has been through so many hardships and she’s taught the biggest lessons of life. I would not be here without her advice.”

Ortiz is a hard worker who excels at school. She is as dedicated to ensuring she has a great future as she is to ensuring the youth at the Club do, as well. Despite the pandemic, Levittown Science Olympiad teams from Division Avenue High School and General Douglas MacArthur High School have had a successful year.

The teams earned spots in the Science Olympiad Nassau East Regional Competition and the New York State Tournament.

Students from both teams prepared for the regional and state tournaments by participating in invitational competitions during the school year.

Division Avenue students showcased their talents at the Duke University, Harvard-Brown, MIT and Princeton invitationals, while MacArthur students sharpened their skills at the Duke University and North Pocono invitationals. At North Pocono, MacArthur students earned fifth place in the

Dynamic Planet category and sixth place in the GeoMapping category.

AUTHOR INSPIRES BERNER STUDENTS Sixth graders at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District learned about the writing and publishing process from an author whose child-friendly book about the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks is used as a teaching tool at the school.

Author Tom Rogers recently connected with students via videoconference and talked about his book, Eleven, which is about the journey of a boy who turns 11 on 9/11. Rogers discussed the different ways authors find motivation for their books. Many of his stories have been based on his own experiences; the idea for Eleven came from his nephew.

Rogers shared how a high school English teacher inspired him to be a writer, after initially wanting to be a scientist. He also talked to students about the importance the editing process, noting that a “perfect first draft” doesn’t exist.

“Even a great writer isn’t always successful the first time,” library media specialist Laurie Martucci-Walsh said, about the important writing lesson that Rogers imparted on Berner’s sixth graders.

NEW YORK THESPIAN FESTIVAL AWARD WINNER South High School junior Rosanna Gao was recently honored for her original one-act play that was featured in the 2021 New York Thespians One Act Festival, sponsored by the Educational Theatre Association.

Gao’s one-act play, “The Story of Li Keng Wong,” was awarded a Certificate of Excellence for Student Written Work.

The New York Thespians One Act Festival was open to middle schools and high schools across the state.

Students pre-recorded original one-act performances, which were streamed and adjudicated during the virtual festival from April 23–25.

Gao submitted her one-act play as a member of South High Thespian Troupe 7486, a chapter of the International Thespian Society. The faculty advisor is Tommy Marr, drama teacher/Theatre South director.

Thespian troupes are chartered in public and private schools throughout the country, representing excellence in theatre education.

ROSLYN STUDENT AWARDED SCHOLARSHIP Roslyn High School senior Sammy Feinstein was awarded the Nassau County Council of School Superintendents Northeast Quadrant Scholarship. Feinstein’s essay spoke to the positive influence educators have had and continue to have on his life and how he hopes to one day impart that same influence to others as an aspiring educator.

“Sammy’s personal connections are far-reaching and his passions are bottomless,” Roslyn High School Guidance Counselor Cherie Totillo said. “He has formed innumerable relationships with his teachers from middle school to high school and has kept in contact with all of them.

MISSION MARIGOLD PLANTS SMILES ON SENIOR CITIZENS’ FACES Mission Marigold took place over the course of three days. High school students first planted marigolds into pots. The next day, the student volunteers delivered the plants to some senior citizens locally. Mineola High School students involved in the Student Service Center planted smiles on the faces of local senior citizens with “Mission Marigold.”

Due to the constraints of the pandemic, student volunteers have been unable to see the senior citizen guests who typically are a part of the school’s Lunch Bunch. Mission Marigold is a way for students to still safely connect with the seniors, while carrying on the tradition of giving them a small potted plant each spring.

Manor Oaks School students in grades K-6 were virtually visited by author and illustrator Peter Catalanotto through a Google Meet livestream on May 12 and May 19. The presentation was made possible due to the efforts of teachers Christina Sciarrotto, Sharon Layburn and Barbara Nelson, as well as the school’s PTA. Prior to the livestreams, the PTA purchased Catalanotto’s books for each class. Kindergartners and first graders read Matthew ABC, Daisy 1, 2, 3 and Ivan the Terrier. Second and third graders received Monkey & Robot: Friends and Neighbors, Emily’s Art and Dylan’s Day Out. Fourth and fifth graders read Mr. Mumble, Question Boy Meets Little Miss Know-It-All and An Angel for Solomon Singer. Sixth graders read An Angel for Solomon Singer and Mother to Tigers.

During the livestream on May 12, Catalanotto discussed his writing and drawing process. He told the students that he’s always loved to draw and talk about ideas, and he encouraged them to write or draw their own stories. On May 19, he answered the students’ questions.

Dorothy James Dadirrian Dorothy James Dadirrian, age 90, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2021 in Cape Coral, Florida.

Dorothy(“Dottie”) grew up in Philadelphia, PA with her three brothers.

She graduated with her RN from Germantown Hospital School of Nursing and later received a B.S. at New York University School of Education In 1955, she married Arthur N. Dadirrian, aphysician, and raised three daughters in Manhasset. She was an involved mother who served on the Manhasset SCA and as a Girl Scout Leader. She and Art resided in Manhasset for over 25 years where she worked as a private duty nurse, a real estate agent (O’Connell) and a school nurse for the Port Washington school district.

Dottie lived life by working hard and staying busy. After she and Art “retired” to Florida, she got her antiques appraisal license and continued working as a part-time nurse for the Palm Beach schools. She enjoyed travelling, swimming, gardening and beating everyone at Jeopardy. She was a woman of faith and a parishioner of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

Most importantly, Dottie loved her family. She is survived by her children Janet Hughes (Cory), Susan Sosa (Vincent), and Nancy Kazmierowicz (Jack); brother William James (Penny), as well as seven grandchildren. Dottie was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Art; her parents, Cleveland Abbey and Jane James and her brothers Jack (Cleveland) and Ed (Edwin) James.

We will miss her beautiful smile, amazing orchids, and her quotes for all occasions.

Born Aug. 25, 1978, he grew up in Adelphi, MD. Soft spoken, kind and standing 6 feet 5 inches, his ready smile and gentle soul towered over all who knew him.

He enjoyed Broadway plays, dining out, the Jets, and, most of all, spending time with his 12-year old daughter. Michael is survived by his daughter, Claire; mother Nancie Chang of Adelphi, MD.; father Charles Chang and stepmother Michelle Wang of Rockville, MD., older brother David Chang of Austin, Texas. A memorial service is being organized by his family.

NYU Langone Looks To Expand

YU Langone-Long Island is looking to expand its campus and went before the village board in late April to unveil its plans for a new parking garage to be constructed. The discussion between the board, which asked a variety of important questions such as traffic, the true integrity of the existing parking garage and more, spilled over into another public hearing that happened on May 19.

According to NYU Langone, the new visitor parking garage would be at the intersection of Third Avenue and First Street with three below grade parking levels and five above ground levels.

The new parking garage would, in fact, replace the existing visitor garage.

The hospital is not only looking to demolish the existing parking garage, but are also looking to demolish the professional residence building.

The new garage would be self-service and available to visitors 24-hours a day, seven days a week. The garage will connect to the hospital allowing people to directly walk inside. Employees who work at the professional residence building are being relocated to off-site areas and offices where their work will be decanted to other locations.

“NYU is planning very significant improvements to the campus that are designed to improve patient care and provide the latest facilities available in the health care world that would be

able to benefit the community in the long run, improve patient care, and establish and reenforce NYU’s identity in the community and in Mineola as an academic medical center,” said lawyer Michael Sahn, who represented NYU Langone.

Sahn added that the existing parking garage has outlived its useful lifespan stating that it’s been around for the past 47 years.

“The new garage will be a state-ofthe-art type of garage built according to current code in terms of handicapped access and spaces, fire codes and the like,” he said. “If the board sees its way to approve the project, there will be an increase of 134 net spaces on the campus equaling 700 spots.”

NYU Langone expects a 26-month construction period with plans in place for traffic mitigation while the garage is being built.

“The proposed garage is 60-feet in height compared to a permitted 50-feet,” Sahn said. “There is a small area on the roof of the garage that goes up to 75-feet for a bulkhead for the elevator overrun. The other variance request is with respect to the size of the parking stalls in the garage where we are proposing stall sizes that are less than required by the code.”

The hospital already went before the village’s Board of Appeals about the variances, which is still pending.

Daniel Winkelman, who is a traffic and parking expert, said that there will also be a second access point to the

new parking garage on Second Street and Third Avenue.

“In regards to my traffic and parking study, this is simply a replacement garage,” Winkelman said. “It’s not going to increase the amount of traffic.

What it will do is attract more traffic to it because it has increased capacity. My analyses did account for that. One important thing I would like to mention, all traffic data and all of my parking data was collected pre-COVID.” Based on his analysis, the intersections of Mineola Boulevard and First Street, and Mineola Boulevard and Second Street would still be expected to operate the way they do today.

During the board’s questioning, NYU Langone representatives confirmed that there would be a period of six months where there would be no parking garage at all between the demolition and construction phases.

“When you talk about construction workers parking at 211 Station Road they are going to use the current pedestrian bridge from the Intermodal center and I guess in time, the [Harrison Avenue] garage?,” Mayor Scott Strauss asked.

Winkelman confirmed.

“We currently have a problem with the third track crew,” Strauss added.

“They just park wherever they think they can and take up handicap spots.

They’re not the best people to work with. What guarantees can you provide us, our residents, and business owners that your workers are not going to take

parking spots away from people?”

Winkelman said he’d have to get back to the board on that request.

Residents also spoke and gave their thoughts about NYU Langone’s new construction plan—stating that the area is already congested as it is.

“I think the parking garage at Harrison and Third Avenue, and this one will certainly alleviate some of that driving around looking for parking spaces,” Strauss said. “These vehicles, in my opinion, are here already.

They’re driving around endlessly looking for parking spaces that don’t exist, hoping to find someone pulling out in front of somebody’s house so that they could sneak in there.

Hopefully, this parking garage will alleviate some of that congestion and constant traffic. Our concern of how to do it and whether that garage needs to come down at the same time.”

On May 19, the hearing continued when NYU Langone returned with an altered plan. The main difference was the construction timetable change.

NYU Langone proposed completing construction on a new parking garage before tearing down the existing parking structure. The two structures are on separate parcels, so they’re not building on the site of the current parking garage. The village board reserved decision for a later time.

Gold Coast Purple Stingers Win NYSA Championship

he Gold Coast Purple Stingers finished their spring season in second place overall, taking them to the final game of the championship series against the first place Lady Diamond Pros from Lynbrook.

“I have been working with these ladies since we started the Stingers when they were only nine years old,” said Coach Jeff Roditi. “I could not be prouder how far they have come, the hard work they have put in and what great players and teammates they are becoming.”

The Stingers fired up the offense right from the first inning with a run.

“I’m proud of how I pitched, but I’m even prouder of how great we all played as a team, both at bat and in the field,” said #99 Grace Ryan.

Stellar pitching allowed only 10 hits over the seven innings with two strike outs and the game saw two home runs hit in the second and seventh innings.

“I had a great hit in the seventh inning; I was so excited when it was a home run,” said #12 Julia Noboa. “I brought in two runners too, giving us a nice late-game lead.”
