Water District Receives Grant, Seeks Bond For Capital Improvement Projects

ew York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced earlier this month that the New York State Environmental Facilities Corporation Board of Directors approved $34.2 million in grants, interest-free loans and low-cost loans to support vital drinking water and wastewater infrastructure projects across New York State. The Port Washington Water District (PWWD) was among some of the few to have received funds totaling nearly $6.7 million for remediation of their drinking water wells.

“Access to clean water is an essential piece in building strong, vibrant communities and it’s critical our local partners have the resources they need to protect the health and safety of New Yorkers,” Governor Cuomo said. “With this funding in hand, communities throughout the state will now be able to make vital upgrades to key infrastructure like wastewater collection systems, disinfection systems and water storage tanks, helping to ensure water quality for their residents is protected generations to come.”

According to the press release, the Port Washington Water District received two Emerging Contaminants Grants in the amounts of $3,428,400 and $3,285,600 for the design and construction of a new treatment process at the existing water treatment facility to remove 1,4-dioxane and PFOA from the Stonytown Road and Hewlett wells.

On Aug. 26, 2020, New York State adopted new drinking water standards for public water systems that set maximum contaminant levels (MCLs) of 10 parts per trillion (10 ppt) each for perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) and 1 part per billion (1 ppb) for 1,4-dioxane. These new regulations have impacted some of the districts water supply wells, which exhibit these contaminants at various concentrations. In order to remediate the wells, they will need to be treated with both an Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) and a Nitrate Treatment System. While these wells are being treated, the district has implemented both conservation requirements and also made

operational changes to ensure that the use of these wells are minimized or avoided while these treatments are being installed.

Despite the nearly $6.7 million in grant funding, the district needs additional funding to ensure critical needs such as treatment for contaminants and general infrastructure improvements are dealt with. On July 8, the District will be holding a public hearing regarding their capital improvement projects for 2021-25. According to Town of North Hempstead (TONH) Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte’s District 6 newsletter, “The Port Washington Water District is proposing to begin the second phase of its capital

improvement program this year. Ten projects are included in Phase 2. Each project has been identified as critical, based either on the need for emerging contaminants treatment or for general infrastructure improvement to maintain the system’s reliability. Many of the projects build upon projects which

were initially identified in Phase 1 of the program in 2019. Projects in Phase 1 are finishing detailed design and heading into construction. The bond issue is necessary to allow for the construction phase to begin for certain projects and for the design and construction phases for other, new projects.”

The district is seeking a bond from the TONH for $37,779,000 for part of the funding required. Capital improvement projects named in Phase 2 include: AOP treatments, and nitrate treatment systems for some of the wells, several water main replacements, tank and system improvements, as well as administration building improvements, electrical improvements and other miscellaneous improvements for the district.

To date, the district has been awarded $18,076,600 in New York State Water Infrastructure Improvement Act (WIIA) grants. This grant funding is being used for the projects that combat emerging contaminants such as those affecting the Hewlett, Stonytown and Morley Park Stations. If and when additional WIIA grands are available, the district will apply for those. If they are successful, the total amount of the bond will be decreased accordingly.”

Several community information meetings were held this month regarding the bond. The TONH will hold a public hearing on July 8 at 7:30 p.m.

News Fire Medic Company No.1 Gets State-Of-The-Art Ambulance Donation

ncorporated in 1979, Fire Medic Company No. 1 is the first of its kind in New York State, and one of the premier providers of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to Port Washington and its neighboring communities. The volunteers represent a unique EMS company within the Port Washington Fire Department (PWFD) that does not require its members to fight fires but instead, dedicate themselves to administering emergency medical services. Although not all Fire Medic Co. 1 members are fire-trained, they work side by side with the other PWFD companies on fires and rescue calls.

For more than a decade, Peter & Jeri Dejana Foundation has supported the Port Washington Fire Department and Fire Medic Co. 1. The Foundation’s grants enhance Fire Medic Co 1’s ability to meet the technological advances necessary in providing emergency medical services. Its most recent donation to Fire Medic Co 1 was an Advance Life Support Ambulance.

“An ambulance is an essential piece of equipment, and I am impressed with the sophisticated features of this stateof-the-art ambulance,” Peter Dejana, president of the Dejana Foundation said, “It is a great addition to their fleet of emergency vehicles.”

Federal and state regulations required improved equipment, more accountability at emergency incidents, specialized training and better physical fitness of firefighters and EMS. Fire Medic Co. 1 operates a state-of-theart fleet of vehicles that include four Advanced Life Support ambulances,

“The Peter & Jeri Dejana Foundation has been a great partner for Fire Medics and the PWFD, this is just the latest in a series of generous donations that has allowed us to enhance the emergency medical care we provide,” Kevin Gately, Captain, Fire Medic Co. 1, said. “Gifts like this not only help address immediate needs, but they free up funds that can be used to upgrade other essential equipment and obtain specialized training, allowing us to maintain the gold standard our community has come to expect.”

Fire Medic Co. 1 operates out of its own headquarters on Harbor Road, near Mill Pond. This facility provides operational, living, meeting, and

overnight accommodations for the members who take duty in scheduled shifts. Fire Medic Co. 1 offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for adults and students and accepts members who reside outside of Port Washington when such slots are available.

The Port Washington Fire Department is one of the largest and busiest volunteer fire departments in New York State and the busiest firebased EMS agency in Nassau County.

There are more than 270 active volunteer members who respond to more than 3,600 calls for help each year.

“We are very grateful for the generous gift towards a state-of-the-art ambulance that was recently donated by the Dejana Foundation,” Brian Waterson, Chief of Department, Port Washington Fire Department said.

As the largest volunteer organization in Port Washington, the PWFD and Fire Medic Co 1 reflects the diversity of our town, all sharing in the common goal of being “neighbors helping neighbors.”

Pleines Piano Students Perform And Win National Honors

n awesome, joyous recital was held on Friday evening, June 11, featuring the talented and enthusiastic Port Washington students of the multi-media piano studio of Ruth Pleines, held at the Shelter Rock Church in Manhasset. Music has been a source of healing and recovery after this difficult year. The appreciative in-person audience of family and friends of more than 60 attended. In addition, 23 attended on Zoom from locations all over the USA, England, Greece and Canada. All enjoyed the pianists choice of solos reflective of the various musical eras—Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Contemporary and Popular.

Each student introduced themselves, their pieces with historic background and then performed: Hannah Brooks, Agathi Ketechis, Vienna Sass, Lucia Schroeder, William Schroeder, Nate Sim, Morgan Sim, Abigail Smith, Hannah West, Katharine West, Connor Worms and Violet Worms.

Pleines expressed her gratitude to the students for their accomplishments requiring dedicated, consistent, committed practice and performance. Also, appreciation was expressed to the parents for their support and commitment to their children’s music education.

North Hempstead Celebrates Pollinator Week Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board declared June 21 to June 27 as Pollinator Week in the Town of North Hempstead. This annual event is celebrated internationally to support pollinator health and advocate for the protection of these important species.

“Pollinators play an invaluable role in maintaining a healthy and resilient ecosystem, and the Town is dedicated to bringing attention to pollinators both here in North Hempstead and throughout our country,” Bosworth said. “These creatures are so important to our daily lives, and we are

proud to celebrate Pollinator Week in an effort to further support their habitats.”

The Town first took the Mayors’ Monarch Pledge in 2018 and has been carrying out actions each year to help monarchs and other pollinators.

Efforts have included the creation of pollinator gardens in Town parks, encouraging residential native plant gardens through a native plant rebate program, public education, and participating in community science research projects focused on pollinators.

This year the Town has also created

a Pollinator Pledge, which allows any property owner (including residents, businesses, schools, non-profits, and places of worship) that maintains a landscape, to pledge to carry out practices that benefit pollinators and the environment. Organic Gardens Bring Community Together

chools in Manhasset are keeping it green with community gardens provided to them by Planet Manhasset, a group dedicated to growing initiatives around environmentalism in the town.

Planet Manhasset was founded in 2006, after concerned parents wanted to start a Christmas tree recycling initiative. In 2013, they moved on to the cultivation of organic gardens at Munsey Park Elementary, Shelter Rock Elementary and Manhasset Secondary School.

Elementary school classes can volunteer to “adopt” the garden for a week, wherein teachers take their students out to weed and harvest vegetables. Parent volunteers then pick up the harvest and deliver it to the food bank at Our Lady of Fatima Church or Bayles Garden Center and Nursery Inc. in Port Washington.

The Planet Manhasset gardens are a community effort, and the Manhasset School Community Association (SCA) helps by using some of their budget to aid in garden maintenance like funding the irrigation systems.

“The SCA has always supported Planet Manhasset’s initiatives, and strives to support enrichment opportunities for children during school hours,” said the Planet Manhasset Chairs Becky Rubin and Aimee Rudic, along with Zari Ginsburg, a heavily involved parent on the project.

The goal of these gardens, according to the Manhasset SCA website, is for students to learn the origins and methods of heathier eating and maintaining a healthy environment.

Although gardening is usually seen as a fun hobby, it can promote important change in how we consume our food.

“We believe that it is extremely important for children to understand where their food comes from, especially given how much processed food has permeated our diets,” said the Planet Manhasset Chairs and Ginsburg.

The students love to observe

the garden grow and are even inspired to garden at their own homes. The Planet Manhasset Chairs and Ginsburg said the children “love seeing how the pea plants are attaching to netting and how the radishes pop up out of the ground when they are ready to eat. These observations are lessons in hands-on gardening that stay with the children.”

Suzanne Mauro, a kindergarten teacher at Shelter Rock Elementary, said that her students wanted to even bring food in from their gardens at home for her to taste. Aside from wanting to expand upon their gardens at home, the students have also been excited to try new foods. Many of the children had not eaten bok choy before they harvested it.

These gardens fit well into the science curriculum at the schools, including activities like the release of classroom caterpillars that have turned into butterflies.

Mauro expanded on the bonding experience that these gardens have also created.

“I enjoy gardening at home, and I was thrilled to share this experience with them. I love taking the children outdoors any chance I get, to experience nature.”

The community response has been overall positive, with many local families getting involved.

Some families have even reached out to the SCA to ask about donating the vegetables they have grown at home.

“We love seeing how the gardens are teaching lessons to families about how easy it is to grow food and reminding them to donate any extra to those in need,” said the Planet Manhasset Chairs and Ginsburg.

The SCA wants to promote these gardens as “community” gardens, where students get to learn how to be a part of a collective effort.

Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts can also help provide additional opportunities for children to get involved in the community and the extra aid that the parents and teachers give really makes these spaces feel connected.

“With temperatures on the rise and summer underway, we are so excited to see the reopening of many of the activities that we all love including our local community pools,” Bosworth said. “We invite residents and their families to join us at one of our many pools to cool down this summer. It is a great way to have some fun and create new summer memories.”

Initially outdoor pools will be open daily with limited capacity for two sessions. The pool facility will be closed midday for cleaning. Visitors will be admitted on a first come, first serve basis. Guidelines are subject to change as per Department of Health guidelines.

Local Family Races Against Time To Save Two-Year-Old Son

n their son Eli’s second birthday, Port Washington residents Ilissa and Scott Reich announced the public launch of their nonprofit foundation, Believe in a Cure.

Believe in a Cure’s mission is to find and fund a cure for FOXG1 Syndrome, a rare brain disorder that afflicts Eli Reich and some 700 other children worldwide. Most patients are unable to walk, talk or do anything independently. The majority of patients also suffer dangerous seizures and have visual impairment, sleep and movement disorders, general irritability and premature death.

“When we were given this devastating diagnosis, it felt like a repeated gut punch,” Ilissa said. “To learn that your child is not expected to have any quality of life is at once frightening, overwhelming and crushing. We were told that no treatment exists and that the situation was hopeless—that there was no way to save Eli from this horrible fate.”

The Reich’s chose to convert their grief into action and founded Believe in a Cure to fund research and drug development at leading institutions around the world. They have projects and collaborations underway at Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute for Technology, the Broad Institute, Tel Aviv University and the University of Massachusetts—as well as universities and companies in Europe and Asia.

It turns out, the situation is not hopeless. Research already funded by Believe in a Cure has indicated that a treatment is possible and attainable due to recent scientific advances like gene therapy, gene editing and drug repurposing.

“The pace of scientific progress these days is so swift, that from the time of Eli’s diagnosis in September 2019 to today, there are already new ideas for how to treat this condition that didn’t exist just 18 months ago,” Scott said. “More important, our preliminary data is showing that reversibility of the condition is possible, which is truly incredible and gives us real hope. We are catalyzing global collaboration with leading experts as we race against time.”

There are more than 7,000 known rare diseases that afflict hundreds of millions of people worldwide.

Most rare diseases do not attract the attention of pharmaceutical companies for commercial reasons, which is why Ilissa and Scott decided to approach their work the old-fashioned way: by building a grassroots community network to raise funds and awareness.

“No one will be more motivated to achieve a goal than a parent seeking to save their child,” Ilissa said. “We’ve basically had to become scientists overnight while taking care of two kids. Eli has around twenty therapies each week, and we’re constantly on the phone with doctors and going to medical appointments. It never ends.

We’re fighting to give our son and

other innocent kids like him a shot at life, and the clock is ticking on our ability to intervene with a treatment.”

FOXG1 Syndrome is caused by a single-letter mutation in the FOXG1 gene, which is a gene that is critical for cognition. Patients with this condition do not have the right amount of the FOXG1 protein that is created by the gene, which is what causes such severe deficits.

“We’ve learned that the FOXG1 gene has scientific links to more common diseases like Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, and brain tumors, and it’s on the Autism Spectrum,” Scott said. “So advances in our work can potentially have much broader application, which is our hope.”

Believe in a Cure has a renowned Scientific Advisory Board of leading

academics and industry experts, as well as a notable Advisory Council composed of former members of Congress, business leaders, philanthropists and more.

The foundation has generated cell lines and mouse models that allow scientists to test new drugs with the aim of normalizing FOXG1 expression, and testing of novel drugs is already underway.

“It takes millions to develop a new drug, which is why we’ve turned to our community for help, and time is of the essence. We have an opportunity to save lives, and our work will help push the field forward in ways that can benefit the world for generations to come,” Ilissa said.

John Juliski Honored For 50 Years Of Service With Roslyn Highlands Fire Company Nassau County Legislator Arnold W. Drucker (D-Plainview) recently had the high honor of celebrating Roslyn Highlands Fire Company volunteer John A. “Earl” Juliski’s half-century of service to the community by presenting him with a Nassau County Citation during a dinner at the firehouse.

Affectionately known by many at the firehouse as “Earl,” Mr. Juliski, a retired Nassau County Police Department carpenter, joined the Roslyn Heights Fire Company on June 7, 1971. Department officials said that, in the years since, he has been a ‘top responder’ almost every year and was named Fireman of the Year in 1979 for his valiant efforts to save a pedestrian who had been hit by a car. While the victim unfortunately succumbed to their wounds, Mr. Juliski, who remains an active EMT to this day, earned plaudits for performing CPR

the entire time while the patient was rushed from the scene to North Shore Hospital.

Reaching the 50-year mark has become a laudable family tradition.

Mr. Juliski’s father, John Juliski, Sr. also achieved the same milestone, making them the first father-son tandem in the Fire Company’s history to achieve this honor.

“Through their dedication, people like John Juliski exemplify Long Island’s selfless and noble tradition of volunteer fire service and actively share the lessons of a lifetime with the next generation of members,” Legislator Drucker said. “It was truly an honor to join the Roslyn Heights Fire Company to celebrate a dedicated community volunteer and public servant.”

Singas Takes Judicial Flight, Names Successor

espite opposition by Republicans and progressive Democrats, Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas was comfortably confirmed to the state’s highest court on June 8. Governor Andrew Cuomo had nominated the veteran prosecutor as an associate justice to the Court of Appeals on May 25 to replace a fellow Democrat, Leslie Stein, who reached retirement age.

Confirmed with Singas was former New York City administrative judge Anthony Cannataro. He replaced the late Judge Paul Feinman, who died earlier this year. Justices serve 14-year terms on the seven-member court.

The Republican opposition centered on the ongoing investigation of Governor Cuomo by the Assembly Judiciary Committee led by Charles Lavine (D–Glen Cove). Should the committee recommend impeachment, Republicans charge, the Court of Appeals will have to sit in judgment and Cuomo’s nominess will have a conflict of interest. Five Democratic senators, in a letter to the Judiciary Committee which conducted a 90-minute hearing on Singas’ nomination, wrote: “For far too long, the New York State Court of Appeals has been dominated by former prosecutors, with little representation from public defenders and civil rights lawyers. As Senators committed to dismantling systemic racism within our criminal justice system, we believe District Attorney Singas’ past support for maintaining draconian criminal justice policies renders her unfit to serve in our highest court. We plan to vote against her nomination, and we urge our colleagues to do the same.”

During the hearing, Singas said she was her own person and that “my prosecutor’s hat comes off and stays off” as soon as she is confirmed.

State and Nassau County Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs, asked if he had any input into Singas’ nomination, replied, “I am always making recommendations, but I’m sure the governor made his own decision based on his own views on what would be good for the Court of Appeals.”

Local Resident Runs For County’s State Legislature McCarty’s campaign focuses on affordable living, safe neighborhoods and schools, and more

eet Meagan McCarty; advocate, mom, wife, Port Washington resident, and now, a candidate for Nassau County’s District 11 State Legislature. Recently, McCarty announced her plans to run for this position, which incorporates Sands Point, Baxter Estates, Manorhaven, Manhasset Isle, North Port Washington, Port Washington, Flower Hill, Roslyn, Roslyn Harbor, Glenwood, Glenwood Landing, Seacliff, and Glen Cove. McCarty is running against incumbent Legislator, Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D-Glen Cove), who has held the seat for seven terms. McCarty believes it’s time for a new seatholder with fresh ideas.

Originally from New Jersey, McCarty moved to Long Island after meeting her husband—then police officer, now sergeant, Brian McCarty.

Together, they have two children, who both attend public school. Previously, she’s worked on campaigns for former North Hempstead Councilmember Dina De Giorgio and former state Senator Elaine Phillips.

“I keep pinching myself that I’m running with Elaine Phillips,” McCarty said, citing both Phillips and De Giorgio as not only mentors, but political inspirations of hers. “No education could have provided me with what they have taught me.”

McCarty has been drawn to local politics for quite some time, working on campaigns since she was a child.

“I’ve always had an interest in how the government works,” she said. “I just love helping people.”

After seeing how involved she was in the community, former Councilwoman De Giorgio asked McCarty to work as her legislative aide. “It’s so rewarding to see it materialize,” McCarty said, in regard to providing solutions for local issues.

McCarty places importance on art, culture, the environment and the community, and wants every resident on Long Island to be able to live happily and comfortably, whether that’s enjoying the North Shore beaches, eating at the amazing restaurants, or shopping in local stores. She wants to guarantee that, “every small business owner is able to live out the American dream here on Long Island.”

Although she’s previously worked on campaigns, this is McCarty’s first time running for public office.

“I’m really shy, and I really enjoyed working in the background with politicians,” she said of her past experience.

However, this next chapter in her political career is extremely important to her. She’s expressed gratitude for the level of support she’s had since announcing her running, not only from those in local government, but from her neighbors, friends, and her close-knit family.

“It helps when the issues are on your side and that you’re running for the right reasons,” she added. “When my little girl is telling everybody that her mom is running for office, and she thinks that one day she could do it too—I can’t back out now.”

In her free time, when she isn’t working or campaigning, McCarty likes to be involved in the community.

Whether that’s helping out the Girl Scouts, cleaning up the beach with her kids, playing on Port Washington’s ‘Momball’ Softball Team, or baking cakes for neighbors.

With the help of owner Christin Rueger and the rest of the team at Knockout Beauty in Locust Valley, customers can enjoy “me time” by getting a facial, talking with experts about skincare and spending time with other people in their community.

“There’s a sense of community in the store,” Rueger said. “It’s in the plaza and it looks like a little cottage. The small town factor of Locust valley is so charming, and the environment of the cottage is so helpful to create a peaceful space. We offer facials, which are given in a different room from the rest of the store, so even though the building is

small, customers can have a moment of peace and quiet.”

Reck is the daughter of two Vogue editors, so from a young age she was introduced to the world of editorials and fashion. Her interest in cosmetology, however, comes from her own passion for skin and beauty. She has spent years doing research about dermatology, physiology, formulas for different products and how hormones

affect complexion. Her drive for the subject is what created Knockout Beauty.

“The pandemic made people restless,” Rueger said.

“When the space opened up in Locust Valley, Cayli and I were excited to help people with skincare. We’re not dermatologists, but we can definitely prescribe the right skincare and educate the consumers.”

Rueger emphasized the importance of a personalized regimen and how the team at Knockout Beauty helps everyone who comes through the door find the regimen that is right for them.

Rueger, while not a true expert on the subject, has been eager to learn more about skincare since she had kids and her skin was constantly changing. She is a self-proclaimed client and enthusiast on the subject.

“The goal wasn’t to be a store owner,” she said. “Now I can authentically speak

about my experience with the products because of what I’ve been through. After kids, a regimen has really helped me and my skin has been more consistent than ever.”

Reck is excited to open this location up to the public, and notes that while it may look different from the outside, it provides the same products as other locations that customers are used to.

“Everything we carry is exactly the same,” she said. “It’s in a different space, but all of the services and products are all the same. So many people I’ve talked to haven’t been in yet, and I’m excited to help them understand and change their skin.”

The students were each awarded $2,500 based on their exemplary scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Blum, Class of 2021 salutatorian, is graduating with a cumulative GPA of 102.699. He is currently a researcher at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory through the Partners for the Future program and formerly served as a NYBG Pfizer Laboratory research assistant. Blum is also a selectee for the All-Eastern Honors Band, as well as the All-State Band. He will be attending Cornell University in the fall where he plans to study biological sciences, mathematics, and computer science.

Jhawar is being offered the National Merit Northeastern University Scholarship, a college-sponsored Merit Scholarship award for use at a participating institution. He is a clarinet player in the school’s band and marching band and holds a cumulative GPA of 99.32. Throughout his high school years, he has taken a variety of AP courses (10 in total) across all disciplines. His academic and career focus is in the STEM field, and he hopes to become an engineer. Jhawar will be attending Northeastern University in the fall to study mechanical engineering.

Wantagh Passes Revamped School Budget Plurality of voters approve new $83.5 million amount

ack on Tuesday, May 18, Wantagh wound up being one of four Long Island districts (the others being Three Village, Northport-East Northport and East Hampton) whose voters refused to pass their respective budgets. For the Tuesday, June 15 re-vote that was held at Forest Lake, Mandalay and Wantagh Elementary Schools, approximately 2,950 residents or 70 percent of total voters pulled the yes lever in the voting booth for the $82.7 million 2021-22 spending plan, which was beyond the 60 percent number needed for a budget override of the state tax cap. Those in opposition numbered 1,213 residents, or 30 percent of the electorate. Shortly after results were counted up, the Wantagh Board of Education unanimously approved the new proposal during a virtual session at around 9:30 p.m. that evening.

The board of education was forced to go back to the drawing board after the original proposed 2021-22 school budget of $83.5 million was met with voter backlash given that it

represented a $2.3 million increase from the previous year. For that budget, 1,202 votes were cast in favor of it versus 1,165 against, necessitating a super-majority 60 percent threshold that was required due to the fact that the 2.8 tax levy increase pierced the 2 percent tax cap. When the May 18 proposed budget was defeated, the board of education reached out to the community for suggested remedies to ensure the budget would pass in the second goround. The second proposed budget was modified to include $1.1 million of reduced expenditures, resulting in a spending increase of only 1.88 percent and a tax uptick of 1.96 percent. The Allowable Maximum Tax Levy under the tax cap is currently $60,748,205. For 2021-22, the district’s tax cap is negative with a year-overyear change of negative .61 percent.

With the original proposed budget, the district had sliced costs by more than $1 million and included the

reduction of two full-time administrative positions, cutting 19 full-time employees, increasing elementary school class sizes by one student and combining seventh and eighth-grade athletic teams. That budget also brought a hike in health insurance premiums by an average of 3.4 percent. A significant factor in the passage of the second budget was Wantagh’s decision to cut 29 positions, both administrators and teachers, from its current staff.

Had the revised school budget failed to pass, the district would have been forced to move to a contingency budget that includes specific legal guidelines that must be followed.

Among those requirements is that the district must operate under the same tax levy as the previous year and can only support contingent expenses directly tied to the safe, legal day-today operation of the district and the regular instruction of its students.

he Nassau County District Attorney’s Office recently announced that an East Rockaway certified public accountant, employed as the chief financial officer and controller of a former Great Neckbased condiments company, has been charged with allegedly embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from the company and spending the funds on personal luxuries, including golf and a beach cabana.

Barry Rosner, 64, of East Rockaway, was arraigned before Judge Lisa Petrocelli on one count of grand larceny in the second degree (a C-felony), and eight counts of falsifying business records in the first degree (an E-felony). The maximum sentence on the top count is five to 15 years in prison. Rosner was released on his own recognizance and is due back in court on July 12.

According to the criminal complaint, Rosner was employed as the CFO and controller of Old Dutch Mustard/USA Vinegar, a former Great Neck-based condiments company now located in New Hampshire.

Rosner had worked closely with the company’s co-founder until his death in February 2015.

Months after the co-founder’s

death, Rosner allegedly began embezzling thousands of dollars from the company—amounts between $2,000 and $4,000—through wires into his personal bank account.

As the theft continued, Rosner allegedly stole larger amounts of money, approximately $10,000 or more each month in 2018. The investigation showed Rosner spent the embezzled funds on golf, a beach cabana, clothing, dining and credit card bills.

The theft was ultimately uncovered when Old Dutch Mustard/USA Vinegar hired outside accountants in 2019 and confronted Rosner, who was later terminated. The company referred the alleged conduct to NCDA. The case is being prosecuted by Senior Investigative Counsel Richard Sikes of the DA’s Financial Crimes Bureau. The defendant is represented

1. Do you have confidence in your financial plan as you think about retirement?

“To build confidence you have to understand how much money you will be spending during retirement on an after-tax basis,” Palumbo said. “Our

With more than 21 years in the business, Palumbo said the way you achieve peace of mind is to deliver a plan to people that they can understand and builds confidence that they can be financially secure throughout their retirement years.

“When people do it on their own the problem is, most of the times they will make one or two mistakes that will cost them their retirement,” he said.

He added, “Assets like your primary home, vacation home, RV or additional vehicles should not be considered in your retirement plan unless you plan to sell these things off as income.”

2. How will inflation affect your spending?

“If you need $100,000 today for spending, five years from now, you’ll need $125,000. Ten years from now you’d probably need $170,000 because of inflation,” Palumbo said. “This is why you need your full $2.5 million, as an example, to be fully invested and to grow over time to support your lifestyle.”

4. What income streams will you have coming in?

Additional income sources such as Social Security, a pension, rental property income, consulting income or hobbies are all supplemental sources that provide residual or passive income.

“Say you need $100,000 after taxes per year to live on, but you may have $20,000 from social security, and another $20,000 from your pension, so now you really need $60,000 from your savings so you can live your same lifestyle,” Palumbo said.

3. Do you have enough money saved in retirement and non-retirement assets that will distribute an income in retirement years? Do you have enough savings to support and distribute this income so as to not disrupt your lifestyle?

Retirement assets include things like IRAs and a 401k, money that you invested pre-tax that grew tax-deferred.

When retirement assets are pulled out, they are then taxed. Non-retirement assets include things like brokerage

5. How much money do you have saved? Is that enough to support your lifestyle?

“You need to hone in on what you are spending per month,” Palumbo said. “Will you still spend the same way during your retirement years? Do you plan to stay in your home or go on the same exact types of vacations, drive the same car, etc.? If the answer is yes, then you expect that your expenses will be the same in retirement.”

He said if you’re thinking about moving down to Florida, Texas,

Tennessee, for example, where the cost-of-living is cheaper than staying in New York, then you have to factor that in. If you stay in New York, your expenses might be, for example $10,000 per month, but in a lower cost-of-living state, your expenses might go down to $7,000.

“It’s all about our lifestyles; we don’t want our lifestyles to be interrupted,” Palumbo said. “We all have certain things that we enjoy doing on a daily basis and throughout the year. We want to be able to just do that as long as we have our health and the only way to be able to do that is through the use of money. If you don’t have money or your money diminishes, then your lifestyle diminishes. Who wants that in the last chapter, in our golden years.”

any people look forward to retirement and all the enjoyment it can bring after having worked so hard for decades. But from a distance, whether it’s a few years or many years away, it’s not easy to clearly see what retirement will look like.

It’s a bit misty because, after all, there is a lot of uncertainty about the future, and how much money someone will need to have on hand during retirement is subject to numerous variables. But in the process of looking ahead some people miscalculate, in part because they are not fully informed, says Dariusz Godlewski (financialwealthalliance. com), a licensed investment advisor representative and the president of Financial Wealth Alliance.

“Some of the things people assume to be true about money matters in retirement actually are not, and some financial points they think they grasp instead require a deeper dive,” Godlewski said. “Misconceptions and

myths can develop, and those can be harmful to one’s retirement and their enjoyment of it.”

Godlewski points to three key areas where myths and misconceptions can cost you in retirement:

Taxes Godlewski said that one of the biggest misconceptions people have is that they will pay less in taxes in retirement, but for many, that’s not true.

“For one thing, they won’t have many deductions anymore,” he said.

“If they were itemizing, a lot of those deductions go away. Most of the money Americans have is in tax-deferred accounts such as IRAs and 401(k)s, and they’re going to pay taxes on those distributions. Therefore, they need to strategize to lower their tax bill in future.”

One strategy, Godlewski said, is doing partial Roth conversions on their IRAs and 401(k)s.

Nursing Facilities Produce TV Show For Homebound Seniors

xcel at Woodbury for Rehabilitation and Nursing and Lynbrook Restorative Therapy and Nursing have joined with The Life Enrichment Center at Oyster Bay (LECOB), to produce a series of entertaining and educational TV shows to engage senior citizens who may still be homebound while senior centers remained closed.

LECOB provides social activities and vital services for people 60 years old and older.

“The goal of this project is to reach seniors to combat the isolation, depression and anxiety that is prevalent due to social isolation,” Palladino said.

“From our experience over the last year, we have learned only about 10 percent of the seniors are comfortable or able to operate Zoom. In an effort to reach these seniors, Paragon Management is collaborating with the Life Enrichment Center to produce a series of one hour shows that will cover subjects such as nutrition, exercise, meditation and more.”

The show is co-produced by Carolyn Palladino, community liaison at Excel at Woodbury and Denise Walsh, community liaison at Lynbrook Restorative Therapy and Nursing.

“When Carolyn and Denise proposed the project to the center, we signed on without hesitation”, said Judy Palumbo, executive director of LECOB. “The need to reach homebound seniors was always

“This collaborative effort will help the senior

community who are now facing the challenge of having many of their senior centers closed due to the pandemic,” Walsh said. “We are excited to work in partnership with LECOB to create senior programing to be shown across Long Island throughout the pandemic and after, to any homebound person who may need the engagement.”

Viewers can tune in to the show on first and third Sundays of the month at 9 a.m. on NSTV (Ch 20 on Optimum and Ch 37 on FIOS), a public access channel that reaches 14 incorporated villages on the north shore, including Great Neck Estates, Great Neck Plaza, Kensington, Kings Point, Lake Success, Munsey Park, North Hills, Plandome, Plandome Manor, Plandome Heights, Russell Gardens, Saddle Rock, Thomaston and more. The shows can also be accessed via YouTube at NSTV or on the website NSTV.org.

In addition to Excel at Woodbury Nursing and Rehabilitation and Lynbrook Nursing and Rehabilitation, Glen Cove Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation and Emerge Nursing and Rehabilitation are also contributing content for the new show. There are future plans to expand the distribution of the show to other cable public access stations.

What Retirees Should Know Retirement is yours to define

any people planning for retirement anticipate those post-working years eagerly, ready to veg out after a life of toil. Others plan with greater anxiety, unsure whether they even have an identity without their jobs.

But it may be that retirement these days is far different from what either point of view envisions.

“We all have made decisions based on the information we had at the time, but later realized we would have planned differently if we knew then what we know now,” said Patti Hart, co-author with her husband, Milledge, of The Resolutionist: Welcome to the Anti-Retirement Movement. “That’s definitely true when it comes to planning for retirement.”

The Harts don’t even think of themselves as retirees, but as “resolutionists,” constantly challenging themselves to improve.

“I’m busier now than I’ve ever

been,” Milledge said. “I’m using this time to be a better me than I could when my days were structured and my time was spoken for.”

With that said, the Harts share five things future retirees may wish they had known sooner:

Most people’s vision of retirement is built on what the people around them did, but that vision is outdated.

“Many of us watched our parents or grandparents settle into a quiet, nondescript life,” Milledge said. “We’ve seen the stereotypical portrayal of aging and irrelevant ‘retirees’ on TV shows and in the movies.”

Many retirees are much more vibrant than those stereotypes and have no intention of sitting quietly on a front porch while the world passes them by.

“I wish I had known sooner that I could say goodbye to the corporate world and still be interesting and relevant,” Patti said.

“I wish I had known that retirement is yours to define. I successfully defined my role in the business world, but it didn’t dawn on me that I could also reinvent retirement. It seems perfectly obvious now,” she added.

In a recent Harris poll conducted in conjunction with Nationwide, 62 percent of those surveyed said they think it is more important now than it was previously for them to develop a strategy to address taxes in retirement.

Actually, it was always important, so it’s good to see that more people are coming to realize they should be proactive in accounting for taxes as they stash away money for what they hope will be their Golden Years.

Sure, we all realize taxes are important. Otherwise we wouldn’t have roads, bridges, a military and all the other services our contributions to the government help pay for.

But that doesn’t mean we enjoy

paying taxes—or that we have any interest in paying more than what is necessary.

The trick, of course, is making sure you take steps to ensure you pay what you owe—but not a dollar more. That’s not always easy and lawmakers routinely change the rules and the allowable deductions, making it that much harder.

The good news is, sometimes changes to the tax code benefit you.

The bad news is, sometimes they don’t.

That Harris poll showed that 60 percent of Americans, leaning toward the bad news side of things, expect their taxes to go up significantly in the next four years. Also, 62 percent say it’s more important to minimize

You also can gain interest on those accounts each year without paying taxes. Of course, with tax-deferred accounts, the key word is “deferred.”

Eventually, the tax bill comes due.

When you retire and start withdrawing money from those accounts, the IRS will want its share. But what if you decide not to withdraw money from your tax-deferred accounts because you have other income that can pay your bills? Once you reach age 72, you have no choice. That’s when required minimum distributions come into effect. The government requires you to withdraw a certain percentage of your money each year so it can claim those taxes.

Roth conversions

Let’s say you are worried about those tax-deferred accounts and the tax bill that’s going to come due down the road.

One solution that’s become popular in recent years is a Roth conversion.

In such a conversion, you move money from your tax-deferred accounts to a Roth IRA. You pay taxes when you make the conversion, so typically you move portions of the money over several years to avoid a big tax hit all at once. But once it’s in the Roth, the money draws interest tax free and you pay no taxes when you make withdrawals in retirement.

Capital gains

President Joe Biden has proposed raising the capital gains tax on investors who make more than $1 million. Capital gains are profits made from selling investments. Currently, the top capital gains tax rate is 20 percent, but Biden’s plan essentially would eliminate that and tax the capital gains as

ordinary income, which could mean a rate as high as 37 percent. As you can imagine, that has some people concerned. What can those investors who would be affected do? One option would be to spread out the sale of their assets over several years to avoid having more than $1 million in gains in a single year.

These, of course, are just a few ways taxes might impact your retirement, whether that retirement is happening soon or is still several years away.

Remember that Harris poll I cited earlier? One of its other findings was that 41 percent of retirees said they wish they had been better prepared for paying taxes in retirement.

Chamber Installs New President

he Mineola Chamber of Commerce recently installed its newest president Louis Panacciulli. Some might know Panacciulli as the conductor and music director of The Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra—a role that he has had since 1984.

“I received my Bachelor’s Degree from Pace University and my Master’s Degree from New York University,” Panacciulli said. “Although these degrees are in Music Education, I spent the first 25 years of my career in the corporate world. In 1985, I brought The Nassau Pops to Mineola’s Memorial Park where our concerts continue to draw thousands of audience members each summer. In December, Chaminade High School hosts Christmas with The Nassau Pops in their state of the art auditorium.

These concerts are always performed free of charge to the community.”

The Nassau Pops has performed benefit concerts for numerous charities including Long Island Special Olympics, One in Nine, Glen Cove Hospital, the Independence Fund for Wounded Warriors, and most recently Cerebral Palsy of Nassau County.

In 2016, Panacciulli was appointed conductor and music director of the Rockaway Five Towns Symphony Orchestra, which was founded in 1950 and is one of the oldest classical orchestras on Long Island. Panacciulli is also an adjunct professor of music at Nassau Community College and recently retired from his position as teacher of instrumental music in the Valley Stream School District 13. He resides with his family in Franklin Square.

According to Panacciulli, the Nassau Pops Symphony Orchestra joined the Mineola Chamber of Commerce in 1996.

“In 2015, I was invited to join the board of directors,” Panacciulli said.

“It has been the chambers’ custom for the incoming president to select his successor as vice-president. When

Village Discusses Trees And Sidewalks D

uring a recent board meeting, trustees discussed village trees and sidewalks. Trustee John Delany stated that this has been an issue for many years and that some village-owned trees generate sidewalk repairs. The discussion included mention that (legally, by local law in the village code) adjacent homeowners are currently liable for repairs to sidewalks, even when village tree roots cause the damage. According to Village Administrator Ralph Suozzi, during a five-year period (2016-2020), the village averaged $531,000 per year in repairs—approximately $200,000 for aprons/ curbs and approximately $300,000 for sidewalk repairs.

Stanco explained the process of surveying the sidewalk flags. The village will continue its policy regarding sidewalk replacement and is reviewing sidewalk defects caused by village tree plantings, as well as the cost of such remedial repairs to homeowners.

Police Commissioner To Report To Rotary The Mineola-Garden City Rotary Club will be honored to welcome Kenneth O. Jackson, Police Commissioner of the Inc. Village of Garden City, to speak to members and guests on June 29 at 12:15 p.m. at Calogero’s restaurant in Garden City. Commissioner Jackson will report on current topics such as COVID, reform laws, scams and traffic safety.

“Our Garden City Police Department is proud to be a modern, innovative, proactive police agency, attentive to the needs of the community,” it was stated in the village’s 2020 annual report. “The department maintains a policy of omnipresence and preventative patrols resulting in Garden City being recognized

Garden City High School Senior Spotlight: Frank Santeramo

Garden City High School senior Frank Santeramo is a skilled athlete with a full list of accomplishments. A varsity baseball team co-captain, pitcher, second baseman and outfielder, Santeramo enjoys the camaraderie of his teammates and mentorship of Coach Izzo and Coach Chaputian.

Santeramo has had a

successful senior year thus far, having been identified as one of Newsday’s Top 100 Baseball Players on Long Island and presented with an award from the Town of Hempstead. He was also named to the Perfect Game-Rawlings Pre-Season 2021 All American Team, is nationally ranked on Perfect Game’s High Follow List and was included on the Class of

2021 Blue Chip Top Prospect List.

This past Memorial Day, Santeramo pitched a complete game shutout against Calhoun High School to help secure a 3-0 victory over the previously undefeated team in the conference. He surrendered zero runs on three hits over seven innings, striking out nine and walking zero.

Santeramo also had a two out, two RBI single.

In the fall, Santeramo will be attending SUNY Maritime College where he has committed to play baseball. The district wishes him well in his next steps and looks forward to hearing about his future victories.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR WE’RE AT A CROSSROADS, AND FERRETTI SHOULD LEAD NASSAU COUNTY If the pandemic has taught us anything, it should be that we as Long Islanders need to be more involved in local government. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was articulate when she addressed residents’ concerns during New York’s coronavirus apex.

For weeks, many people tuned in to Curran’s COVID news conferences to see how Nassau County was battling the deadly virus. But she has fallen short of helping working class families when they need it the most.

Despite claiming to want to protect the welfare of Long Island families, Curran has proposed an over $9 million dollar property tax hike on Nassau County residents in the midst of a pandemic and

her unfair reassessment is crippling family budgets.

While many residents are still dealing with the financial effects of a statewide shutdown, Curran is strapping residents with unfair taxes they simply can’t pay. Just check your first half tax bills that came in recently, the first under her reassessment.

Nassau is at a crossroads, and deserves a leader that will fight for working class Nassau County families.

Someone who will fight to lower taxes, not veto tax cuts.

Someone who will work with our federal partners to rid the county of MS-13 and other violent gangs. Someone who will answer constituent calls, not leave residents in the dark. Someone who will stand up against Democrats’

dangerous bail reform, and stand with our men and women of law enforcement.

With the county executive race on the ballot this November, I know who my pick would be to run against Curran and get our county back on track.

Legislator John Ferretti has been an outspoken critic of Curran’s reassessment, and worked with members of the majority to introduce tax cuts that the county executive later vetoed. He has held town hall meetings throughout the district, taking what he has heard and turning it into legislative action. Whether it be introducing legislation to help exterminate rodents in the community, or working with parents to educate children on the dangers of

reckless bike riding and riding a bike without a helmet.

As county executive, Ferretti will continue to vote against increases in property taxes, reinstate funding to battle the rodent issue plaguing Nassau residents and always stand with our dedicated law enforcement community by advocating to get rid of the dangerous cashless bail laws that put both police officers and our community at risk.

Curran talks a big game, but her actions speak volumes. It is time for new leadership to represent us, someone who truly understands middle class values. Ferretti has brought surprising transparency back to the legislative process and would continue to do so as county executive.

That’s where I met Ed. He was wearing his trademark brown blazer with a white button-down shirt opened at the collar. Leaning against the door frame with a paper plate and a slice of pizza, he waived to me and said hello. I was standing behind the table with the wine and soda, acting as a bartender.

“What kind of beer ya got?” he asked with a slight smile on his face. Of course, being a fellow beer drinker, I laughed and put my palms up in the air.

“There ain’t no beer,” I told him, asking, “How can you have a Christmas party without beer?”

“You’re absolutely right,” he said with a big grin on his face.

“Wanna make a beer run with me?”

The words couldn’t come out of my mouth faster. “You bet!”

We grabbed our coats and jumped into my 1975 Chevy Nova, which had papers and debris all over the back seat.

“You live in this car?” he said with a laugh. “Then again, you should see my car!”

Heading out to the nearest 7-11, we talked about our favorite beers (his was Budweiser) and what it was like to be a recent college graduate. I told him about my work with the New York Tech paper as a sports columnist.

Curran Announces County With School Districts COVID-

assau County Executive Laura Curran recently announced a new initiative to assist Nassau County’s school districts with applying for FEMA and other grant funding to help with the many expenses from the pandemic. In order for the county to continue to maximize grant funds and protect taxpayers, the county will now be providing consulting services to school districts to help them navigate FEMA reimbursements, ESSER funding and additional grant assistance.

“COVID-19 had a devastating economic impact on countless businesses and industries in Nassau— especially our school districts who had to pick up the cost of adjusting to new protocols and mandates in order to keep students safe during the pandemic,” Curran said. “This has been a school year like no other

and our school districts constantly went above and beyond to make sure our students continued to receive a top-notch education despite the uncertain circumstances. Nassau will continue to work in assisting our school districts to receive compensation for the expenses they had to pay in order to safely get our children back in the classroom.”

School districts incurred unexpected expenses due to COVID-19, such as new HVAC filters, new barriers in classrooms and communal spaces and enhanced cleaning, among many other costs, put a burden on their budgets, which in turn can be passed onto the local taxpayer.

Curran Announces Summer Youth Employment Program Nassau County Executive Laura Curran recently announced that the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) is providing funding to the Nassau County Department of Social Services (DSS) to provide an abbreviated Summer Youth Employment Program (SYEP) for eligible youth ages 16 to 20 years. The DSS partnered with various Nassau County departments to place over 75 youth in various jobs.

“The county-run Summer Youth Employment Program connects young residents with paid job placements. The program gives young people education, training and support services while allowing them explore career paths,” Curran said. “Outstanding young adults have come through this program in past years, and I can’t wait to seeing this year’s group put their talents to work.”

Exposure to work settings and connecting youth to jobs are key components of Nassau’s SYEP. The program helps youth enhance their work history and employability through education and training workshops that provide job-readiness and work-related skills. The program will also help youth develop their social capital by connecting with potential employers. DSS identified the youth by collaborating with local schools, and DSS foster care agencies.

Social Services Commissioner Nancy Nunziata stated, “The program is a wonderful opportunity for our youth to earn money and develop job skills necessary for their future success. We are grateful to OTDA for providing the additional funding in order that county youth can benefit from this worthwhile program.”

THE SHOW GOES ON IN MINEOLA Despite the challenges fine and performing arts departments have faced due to the pandemic, Mineola High School students have managed to persevere, putting on two successful drama performances. Last month, 11th and 12th graders put on multiple shows of Into the Woods at the Hampton Street School football field.

Students were able to stay socially distant while the audience looked on from the bleachers.

On June 5, eighth, ninth and 10th grade students put on a performance of Capsized Cabaret, a show they

helped write and design themselves.

Capsized Cabaret centers on a cruise ship that is overturned in the Bermuda Triangle. As part of the self-made production, students were asked to audition as a character of their own creation, then existing songs were catered to their scenes. Capsized Cabaret was born from a collaborative process and had two performances in Mineola Memorial Park, where the student actors distanced and essentially performed songs one at a time.

EIGHT HICKSVILLE ARTISTS HONORED FOR EXCELLENCE Eight students from Hicksville High School were selected to have their artwork displayed in this year’s Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at The Heckscher Museum exhibition.

Birnbaum (D-Great Neck) recently joined Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and her colleagues in government at the Office of the Fire Marshal’s annual staff awards ceremony. Hosted at Hicksville Fire Department Station 3, the ceremony is annually held to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of staff in the Fire Marshal’s Office, Fire Communications Bureau and the Fire/Police EMS academy.

During the ceremony, Birnbaum presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Great Neck resident and Fire Marshal Keith Rabinowitz,

who received the Meritorious Service Award for extinguishing a vehicle fire and removing victims on March 9, 2020.

Birnbaum also presented a Certificate of Appreciation to Chief Fire Marshal Scott Tusa, who is retiring with 33 years of service in the Office of the Fire Marshal and eight years as Chief Fire Marshal.

“Fire marshal Keith Rabinowitz’s heroic actions at the dawn of the COVID-19 pandemic are emblematic of the selfless service performed by so many first responders throughout some of the most challenging times in our County’s history,” Birnbaum said.

Students in the Massapequa High School orchestra regularly play music by famous composers, but it’s rare for them to perform a piece written by one of their peers. That was the case this year, as they learned a composition by senior Adriana Kamor, who started writing original music in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kamor said that composing was her way of staying connected to music when schools closed down in

March 2020. She used a program called Note Flight, which was recommended by her teacher Marjorie Spagnuolo, to create new arrangements of pop songs she likes.

She said that creating music on computer software produces a digitized version of the song, so the first t ime she heard her classmates play the 2 minute, 10 second song live was an amazing experience and really brought her creation to life.

Senior Samantha Snevily from Division Avenue High School in the Levittown Public Schools was recently recognized as the grand prize winner for grades 9 to 12 in the Rural Schools Association of New York State’s annual Student Video Contest, sponsored by New York Schools Insurance Reciprocal. As the winner, Snevily was awarded $1,000.

The theme of this year’s contest was “Our school. Our community.” Students were

asked to create a video less than three minutes long related to the theme. Two grand prize winners, one for grades K to 8 and the other for grades 9 to 12, were selected.

While enrolled in Mark Engels’ digital media class, Snevily created an uplifting Division Avenue senior Samantha Snevily was named the $1,000 grand prize winner in the Rural Schools Association of New York State’s Student Video Contest.

In addition to submitting her video into the contest, Snevily’s positive video was showcased at a Levittown Board of Education meeting this past March.

POLICE REPORT East Meadow Man Arrested For Stolen Property Eighth Squad Detectives report the arrest of an East Meadow man for criminal possession of stolen property that occurred on June 10 at 1:50 p.m. in Levittown.

According to detectives, officers responded to a 911 call for an auto accident with injuries. A 19-year-old male was operating a 1999 Ducati motorcycle traveling eastbound on Hempstead Turnpike and struck a 2014 Honda traveling westbound prior to making a left turn on Wolcott Road.

The operator of the motorcycle from East Meadow was ejected, suffered multiple injuries and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The 61-year-old male operator of the Honda remained at the scene.

During the investigation it was determined the 1999 Ducati motorcycle was reported stolen from New York City. Joseph Scardino, 19, of East Meadow was arrested.

Scardino is charged with criminal possession of stolen property. He was issued an appearance ticket for June 24.

According to detectives, Highway Patrol officers observed a male operating a 2016 Yamaha motorcycle southbound on Sunnyside Boulevard.

The license plate was improperly displayed and the operator entered a 7-11 parking lot located at 160 Sunnyside Blvd. without signaling.

The subject entered the store and when he exited the officer began to conduct an investigation regarding the motorcycle’s registration.

The operator was uncooperative, refused to comply with the officer’s commands and attempted to get on the motorcycle to flee the scene.

The officer grabbed the motorcycle to prevent the subject from leaving.

The subject got off the motorcycle and fled northbound on Sunnyside Boulevard. He was observed dropping an item on the side of the road, which was a handgun. Isaac Cabanas, 25, of New London, CT., continued north before being place under arrest.

Cabanas is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and second-degree obstructing governmental administration. He was arraigned on June 12 in Mineola.

9:15 p.m. in Hicksville.

According to detectives, a 57-year-old female was sitting in her parked car at 182 West Old Country Rd. when 27-year-old defendant Jose Jose Ordonez-Bonilla Ordonezapproached the driver Bonilla (Photo side window with a courtesy of knife and demanded NCPD) her purse. The female victim refused to comply and the defendant fled the scene on foot, running northbound on Newbridge Road.

The victim followed the defendant in her vehicle, before losing sight of him and then contacted police.

A subsequent investigation involving detectives identified OrdonezBonilla as the person responsible. He was located on June 13, 2021 at 678 Union Ave. in New Cassel and placed into custody without incident.

Ordonez-Bonilla is charged first-degree robbery, second-degree menacing and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned on June 14 in Mineola.

According to detectives, First Precinct Officers responded to a residence on Hempstead Turnpike for an attempted burglary that just occurred.

Upon arrival, officers were informed that a 35-year-old male victim had observed a male subject attempting to gain entry to his residence while viewing security camera footage.

A subsequent investigation by responding officers led them to identify and locate 33-year-old Tyler Rock a short distance away and place him into custody without incident.

Rock has been charged with second-degree attempted burglary. He was arraigned on June 14 in Mineola.

Serious Car Accident In Jericho The Homicide Squad reports the details of a serious auto accident that occurred at 8:45 p.m. on June 13 in Syosset.

According to detectives, the 35-year-old male driver of a Lexus sedan was in a collision with a 54-year-old female driver of a Porsche Macan traveling westbound on the Long Island Expressway near exit 43. As a result of the collision, the 35-year-old male was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

The female operator was not injured.

The investigation into this accident continues.

Independent, funny, beautiful, loyal and loving until the end, she will be greatly missed.

Farmingdale High School Teams Earn Multiple Accolades

armingdale’s sports teams never fail to impress, exhibiting incredible displays of camaraderie and discipline on and off the field.

Farmingdale’s Athletic Department is proud to announce that, in addition to multiple victories and awards won by the fall teams, they have also achieved Scholar-Athlete Team status. This recognition is reserved for teams in which 75 percent or more of the athletes have maintained a 90 percent or higher grade-point average throughout their sports season. The hard work, focus and dedication evident on these sports teams translate to the hours student-athletes spend poring over their studies each day.

To be a part of an incredible roster of sports teams is, in and of itself, no easy feat; to be equally as dedicated and successful in your academics makes the attainment of Scholar-Athlete Status all the more impressive.

The fall sports season looked very different this year, taking place in March and April. Teams had new protocols and much colder temperatures to deal with than usual. Girls varsity soccer had to submit to weekly COVID-19 testing Saturday mornings and daily temperature checks upon arrival.

“We won a grueling playoff in double overtime at Plainview before bowing out to the eventual county champions in the semi-finals,” Coach Ilan Gornstein said. “The team owes its successful season to their great leaders and captains: senior Jaden Keener and junior Emma Best.”

Farmingdale Varsity Football was fortunate enough to play five out of their six scheduled games. Pandemic protocols affected the locker room and how they took the bus trips to away games. The team was fortunate to survive it all without any severe team consequences.

“The highlight of the season was just the chance to play football,” Coach Buddy Krumenacker said. “The work ethic and dedication to living within these guidelines is truly a credit to our entire Farmingdale community.”

The Dalerettes Farmingdale High School Kickline team thrived. All of their hard work and dedication paid off each time that they stepped out on the field. Despite the odds, the Dalerettes still were able to have a fantastic halftime show with the band.

Each member of the team contributed their fair share of positivity. Even with

Captains Cassie Fox, Rachel Goldberg, Zoë Leung, Hayley Boyle and Erin Magrane put in so many outside hours to choreograph all of the routines.

“Through their fun, organized leadership and communication skills, they shaped the Dalerettes team into nothing but greatness,” Dalerettes coach Jess Baker said. “Our captains took our team to a level that will be hard to top for the upcoming seasons.”

The varsity boys volleyball team advanced to the second round of the playoffs this year. There were some challenges along the way getting through the season, but the student-athletes always stepped up.

COVID-19 quarantines caused some game cancellations, but getting back in the gym to compete again was the best feeling. Matt Teplansky received All-County and Matt Pantorno received All-Conference accolades at the culmination of the season.

“I will always be so grateful to all of the seniors for bringing back some normalcy to the school day and year,” Coach Richard Zeidler said. “They taught everyone how important it is to enjoy every minute throughout the season.”

The girl’s varsity tennis team went undefeated this season, winning all seven of their matches and earning the title of Conference Champions.

The team was led by eight graduating seniors, with Brianna Callahan, Kaley Chan and Amanda Oppedisano, having played all four years on the varsity team.

“This year was particularly a challenge playing in 30 and 40-degree weather,” Coach George Golden.

“We take pride that three girls were awarded All-Conference and eight girls achieved All-Division status.

Once again, the team achieved the scholar-athlete award. Truly a year to remember in many ways.”

The golf season was included with the other low-risk sports in relation to pandemic protocols, creating a safe environment for student-athletes to play with their teammates and compete against other schools. As with golf, it was much easier to keep players safe and socially distant.

Varsity golf finished the season in a tie for third in Conference IV. Captain Megan Broscritto had a competitive season and will take her golf acumen to college, where she will be participating on the Adelphi University

Women’s Golf Team.

The Lady Dalers swim team finished seventh overall at the Nassau County Championships, three spots higher than last year and their highest finish since 2012. Ten girls earned All-Conference honors and dive champion Lauren Mehta was named to the All-County team and Co-MVP of the county meet.

The medley relay of Lauren Mehta, Brooke Andros, Shannon Kelleher and Malika Sodhi earned all-conference honors. Samantha Commike finished twentieth in the 200-Free. Senior Taylor Spucces was ninth in the 50-Free and sophomore Bella Cimino was fourteenth. Spucces earned AllConference honors with a fourteenth place finish in the 100-Free, with Cimino close behind in seventeenth.

The 200-Free Relay of Cimino, Sodhi, Kelleher and Spucces was sixth overall and All-Conference. Mehta finished fifteenth in the 100 Back in AllConference position and Commike, Spucces, Cimino and juniors Jessica Giordano and Lauren Danulevith were All-Conference in the 400-Free Relay, finishing in twelfth place.
