Parent Resource Center To Hold Fundraiser

n Saturday, June 19 from 2 to 4 p.m., the Parent Resource Center will be hosting a fundraiser featuring New York Mets great Dwight Gooden, welcoming him back to Port Washington, the town he lived in when pitching for the Mets during their championship season in 1986. The event will be taking place, from 2 to 4 p.m., at Sullivan’s Quay, located at 541 Port Washington Blvd. Guests will have the opportunity to watch the Mets play the Washington Nationals and take part in a meet and greet with Dwight “Dr. K” Gooden.

Opting In Or Out?

Flower Hill board discusses proposed local law enabling recreational marijuana sales

n June 7, the Village of Flower Hill held their first of three public hearings regarding the potential for the village to opt-out of retail cannabis sales.

Proposed local law No. E would authorize the Village of Flower Hill to opt-out of allowing retail cannabis dispensaries and/or on-site cannabis consumption establishments to locate and operate within their boundaries.

Under New York State legislation, cities, towns and villages can render their own decisions regarding recreational marijuana sales in their areas. They have until Dec. 31, 2021 to render a decision, but if they decide not to opt-out, that decision is permanent.

“If we don’t opt-out by the end of 2021, we are forever allowing marijuana facilities in the village,” Deputy Mayor Randall Rosenbaum said. “By opting-out now we are controlling our own destiny. So if it’s something that, for some reason, the future board—in a year, five years, ten years wants to do—it gives them that opportunity to then opt back in. But by not opting-out, we’ve cemented the marijuana facilities in the village. So to me, it makes a lot of sense to opt-out.”

The Town of North Hempstead has not opted out of recreational marijuana sales yet, which could affect the possible income the village would receive from taxes if they chose to opt into the sale of recreational marijuana. Opting into the sale would allow the village to receive a minimal

percentage of tax revenue.

“It is a possibility that the village might have to share that revenue with the Town of North Hempstead, so what could’ve been maybe 3 percent, now possibly becomes maybe 1.5 percent,” Rosenbaum said. “There have been some people who have mentioned the fact of wanting to have these additional revenues, but they are not as big as I assumed they could have been.”

The deputy mayor added that if for some reason the residents disagree with the boards decision to opt-out, they could create a petition that with enough signatures would be able to overrule the decision of the board regarding the local law.

“If they got enough people to petition, it would then go before a public vote,” Rosenbaum said. “It’s a very rare opportunity for residents to overturn some local law that a board enacted.”

Rosenbaum further stated that while the village cannot outright ban the consumption of marijuana in the village, they can ban recreational marijuana consumption on any village

properties.

“I know there was some concern that if there are these types of facilities in the village that people will be able to start smoking all over,” Rosenbaum said. “The only place the village can ban public consumption of marijuana is in the village properties—in this case it would be in the village hall and in the village park. But we can’t out-law smoking on the streets.”

During the public comment portion of the meeting, one resident stated that he was in favor of the village opting-out.

“I am in full support of us opting out,” Mitchell Schwartz said. “I feel that the benefits of us opting-out out-weigh the cons. I understand it’s a somewhat contentious session but I am fully in favor of us opting out.”

Village administrator Ronnie Shatzkamer stated that at the time of the meeting, the village had not received any official comments for or against this local law.

Deputy Mayor Rosenbaum stated that he was disappointed that the residents who feel strongly about this local law didn’t appear before the

board to express their concerns.

“I have to say I am a bit disappointed that there are some residents who feel the need to send letters to other residents and then they don’t even show up at these meetings to express their concerns or formally send those concerns to the board,” the deputy mayor stated.

The board ultimately voted to adjourn the public hearing until their meeting next month.

Under the Village of Flower Hill’s local law, the village must hold three public hearings on non-emergency matters before they are allowed to take a vote. The hearings for this proposed local law will take place on Monday, July 12 and Monday, Aug. 2 at 7:30 p.m. The village board will not have the opportunity to vote on this local law until at least the August meeting.

Town Of North Hempstead Joins With Residents To Combat Hate Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, the town board and North Hempstead’s Asian Advisory Committee have announced that the town will be distributing free “Not In Our Town” lawn signs for residents in North Hempstead.

The signs will be available at facilities across the town.

The town joined with its Asian American Advisory Committee to develop the signs. They were designed to help increase the dialogue with the community in an effort to promote kindness and compassion.

A

Outdoor Programs And Activities For Children Return To The Port Library

s the warmer weather approaches and the number of COVID cases decrease, the Port Washington Public Library (PWPL) Children’s Department welcomes back younger patrons for live, in person programs and activities. With several successful outdoor events already under their belt such as a stop motion animation class and Lucy Salerno Story Time, the PWPL Librarians have lined up many more lively book discussions, Story Times, and other fun, family-friendly outdoor happenings for this coming season.

“With social distancing and mask wearing in effect, we are happy to be providing our visitors with some much needed educational and entertaining enjoyment out in the fresh air,” Children’s Librarian and Director of Children’s Services Rachel Fox said.

While Virtual Story Time will continue every Tuesday via Zoom in June, Port Washington residents can expect to see some familiar faces around town as Friday Story Times will move to Blumenfeld Family Park, located directly across the street from the Library. Starting June 18, mark your calendars for Park Story Time from 10 to 10:30 a.m. every Friday during the

summer. Note that Park Story Time will be held virtually if the weather does not permit. Separate registration for each date is required. Register online at PWPL.org/children.

In addition to outdoor Park Story Times, the Library is pleased to continue Story Time in the Garden which will occur monthly. This month’s event will take place on Saturday, June 26 at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. in the Library Children’s Garden. Limited-capacity, registration required. Spanish Story Time will begin on Wednesday, June

30 and continue every Wednesday in the summer at 11:15 a.m. in the Children’s Garden through Aug. 4. For those wishing to attend Spanish Story Time, it is recommended for children ages 2 to 5 years old with an adult to enjoy stories, songs and fingerplays in Spanish. Separate registration for each date is required. Register online at PWPL.org/children “We recognize that children have been cooped up inside all winter, so we want to provide an outlet for safe and creative outdoor exploration,” Children’s Librarian and Program

Coordinator Amy Christake, said.

For children entering first, second and third grade in the fall, PWPL Librarians recommend attending the outdoor First, Second and Third Grade Book Discussion on Mondays, June 28, and July 12, 26 from 4:30 to 5 p.m. in the Children’s Garden. Books will be available at the time of registration in the Children’s Room. Registration is required and begins June 14.

The Library’s Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Grade Book Discussion will be conducted outdoors in the Children’s Garden on Wednesday, June 23 from 4 to 4:45 p.m. This month’s selection is “The List of Things That Will Not Change” by Rebecca Stead. The book is available for pickup in the Children’s Room or downloadable via the Libby app (found at PWPLorg/children under ‘Children’s Resources’). The book discussion will be held virtually if the weather does not permit. Register online at PWPL.org/children.

Funday Monday Returns To North Hempstead Beach Park This Summer Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the North Hempstead town board have announced that FunDay Monday will return to North Hempstead Beach Park this summer. This popular, free senior program will be held on four dates at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington.

“We are truly excited to welcome back our seniors for FunDay Monday at North Hempstead Beach Park,” Bosworth said. “So many of our residents look forward to this event every summer. We have musical entertainment as well as exciting performances planned, and we are happy to host it, in person, again this year.”

Organized and hosted by the town’s Department of Community Services, FunDay Monday will offer seniors from across the Town the opportunity to experience fun entertainment and fitness. The 2021 FunDay Monday events will be held from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Monday, July 12, July 26, Aug. 9 and Aug. 23. The Aug. 23 event will feature a special salute to our Veterans. Fitness will begin at 9 a.m., with entertainment starting at 10 a.m.

Each event will feature exciting performances including Sympatico on July 26, the Vic Vincent Band on Aug. 9 and Steve Mitchell (featuring the tunes of Elvis Presley) on Aug. 23. Additionally, all of

the FunDay Monday events will have strolling entertainment with magicians, jesters, comedians and individuals from the Circus Project with beautiful costume displays.

Initially, no food or refreshments will be served. All FunDay Monday events will be held with a reduced capacity and social distancing measures in place to ensure a safe return for all residents. The Town will be reevaluating safety guidelines throughout the summer health as restrictions are subject to change.

Gooden played for 16 seasons in Major League Baseball. His career highlights include being a three-time World Series champion (1986, 1996, 2000), a four time All-Star (1984-86, 1988), the National League Rookie of the Year Award (1984), and the National League Cy Young Award (1985).

ort Farmers’ Market opened on Saturday, June 5, for its 21st season. The hours are 8 a.m. to 12 noon and the market will be open every Saturday (rain or shine) through Nov. 20. We are happy to welcome back many of our current vendors as well as some new faces and offerings beginning this Saturday. Please join us early for the best selection of tempting early spring vegetables, strawberries and delicious baked goods.

Nonprofit Grassroots Environmental Education is happy to bring the market to the community.

“It’s great to see so many people visit the market on Saturday mornings,” Patti Wood, founder and executive director of Grassroots said. “It is not only a place to purchase local organic produce and other artisanal food products, but a gathering place for people to meet and enjoy being by the water. The market is part of our efforts to support local organic farmers and encourage healthy eating. We participate in the Farmer’s Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), which helps low-income seniors and mothers with young children afford fresh, nutritious

Although COVID infections are currently low, the market will observe health and safety guidelines issued

by New York State Ag and Markets to keep both customers and vendors safe. That means vendors will wear

masks and all shoppers will also be encouraged to wear them to protect and respect any vulnerable people.

Customers are encouraged to bring their own reusable bags or pick some up at the Grassroots booth.

To comply with the State’s plastic bag ban and the global problems associated with single-use plastics, Grassroots will be offering two canvas shopping bags for the price of one on opening day.

This season, the café will be open and the market will host some special events, including a free book exchange, cooking demonstrations, and a “how to” session on composting and backyard vegetable gardening.

Temple Judea Hosts Genealogical Expert

he Lifelong Learning Committee of Temple Judea recently hosted a guest speaker, Nolan Altman, who gave a fascinating report on genealogy through reading gravestones. Altman is an expert in his field having discovered much background information during his quest for a family history in 1996.

During his presentation, Altman, using photos and case studies, explained the symbols and details found on headstones and described how this information can provide important data and context for

family research. His enthusiasm led many of the congregants to be inspired to try to discover hidden facts about their own families from headstones. It was truly a pleasure to not only hear his fascinating revelations, but to have him explain through slides of actual headstones, how a trove of information can be derived from them.

Diversity Is Lacking

Police force doesn’t reflect county’s racial makeup

he statistics don’t lie. Of the nearly 2,300 people that make up the Nassau County Police Department, only .78 percent are of Hispanic heritage, and .04 percent are African Americans.

The figures contrast with a county population that is 17.5 percent Hispanic and 11.3 percent Black.

Further, this state of affairs is in the face of federal Department of Justice consent decrees seeking greater diversification that go back for decades.

“Clearly, [the consent decrees] are not working,” Nassau County Executive Laura Curran told Anton Media Group. “We need fresh ideas on how to do more minority recruiting. We’re working on it. We certainly have African American representation in the upper echelons of the department.”

She was referring to Chief of Department Steven Palmer, the highest-ranking uniformed officer, and several others in the leadership team.

“I always say, if your department looks like your community, it builds trust in a better way,” she continued.

The county executive recently announced the formation of the Nassau County Police Diversity Committee to improve police hiring. It will take a look, she said, “at one, the consent decrees, if they need to be rescinded or rethought. Two, looking at the civil service [policies and procedures] and how they need to be updated and amended.

And three, what we can do to boost minority recruitment.

We already have some things in place that you’ll see in upcoming classes being sworn in. So it’s slowly happening, but it needs to happen more quickly.”

She added, “But when it comes to the civil service, we want more, and this committee will help us in practical ways, what we can do as a county,

We have a mentor program that we started recently—it was the Guardians, the black police officers society that came up with this idea. So we have black officers who are mentoring new recruits. We all want them to succeed.”

At a recent press conference to introduce committee members, Curran stated, “This committee brings together key stakeholders with a mission of improving diversity in county police hiring through the three stages of the hiring: The first is recruitment. We want to focus on new methods and strategies to reach more potential police officers from all of our communities. We’ve been

trying. We’ve been working on that. We’re open to new ideas.

Testing is the second one.

Working with minority candidates to help prepare for each facet of the police examination and the hiring practice.”

As far as training, the third stage, the county executive has high hopes about the new police training center slated to open later this year on the campus of Nassau Community College (NCC). In a press release, she said she wants to assist “minority candidates in the Police Academy to finish their rigorous training.”

“We’re focusing on each stage of the process for hiring.

Because in many cases the county has had many candidates sign up, and they got lost in the process,” she said. “It’s

a big task. We’re looking to get right to work. And not waste any time in this important work.”

Referencing the committee members arrayed behind her, she said, “I’m asking all of these people, all of these brains to come together to provide me recommendations ahead of the next civil service exam. I think this is a group of people who aren’t afraid to take on something challenging, something difficult.

Something that says you can never change. Let’s see what we can do. We’re ready to go.”

Curran requested that the county’s civil service department schedule a police exam in 2022.

Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder admitted to Anton Media Group that minority representation was small “We’re trying hard to recruit, to bring the minorities in.

We see a growing Hispanic population. We also see that in the police department—that’s growing very quick. But not so much in the African-American [community]. Maybe it’s a trust factor. Maybe we need to do more work. That’s why we have to reform and that’s what we’re after.”

In an interview with Anton Media Group, Curran said, “I don’t think that family makeup has much of a difference on diversity or lack of diversity in the police department.”

Curran was asked, “Is the police commissioner’s job safe? His critics have been asking for his resignation.”

“Yes, his job is safe,” she replied.

Students Rebuild Honors Plainview Student

S

tudents Rebuild, a Bezos Family Foundation program that mobilizes young people to take action on the world’s most critical problems, celebrates Mattlin Middle School student Hailey Richman ahead of a special virtual award show at the culmination of its latest initiative, the “Changemaker Challenge.”

“In this uniquely challenging school year, students and educators have come together to honor the everyday heroes

working to spark change in the midst of so many global challenges,” said Leonetta Elaiho, senior program manager of Students Rebuild.

“We’re so pleased to honor a few exemplary students and educators with a special award.”

The culmination of a nine-month process that brought together students from 55 countries and all 50 states—Students Rebuild has selected six changemakers to honor for their community

further their efforts.

Richman is an eighth grader from Plainview.

From the age of four, she helped act as a caregiver to her grandmother, who lived with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Driven by her experience, Richman has become an Alzheimer’s advocate, and was an invited speaker at the National Alzheimer’s Summit in Washington DC, meeting with representatives to discuss the CHANGE ACT, providing funding for

Alzheimer’s research and for family members who are caregivers to Alzheimer’s patients.

Richman is also the founder of Kid Care Givers— which supports young people who have family members living with Alzheimer’s and is the director of Puzzles to Remember, a nonprofit which collects and distributes jigsaw puzzles for patients living with Alzheimer’s disease.

While the station’s complete restoration remains on course, this significant event comes after the full restoration of the western and southern facades—due in large part (and with great thanks) to major donors, including The Dolan Family Foundation, The Bahnik Family Foundation and the Robert D. Over the last several months, board members and volunteers concentrated their efforts in upgrading the station’s interior to accommodate various displays and exhibits, along with dedicated areas for a gift shop and information center.

The turntable, which was long used by the Long Island Railroad to reverse direction of locomotives on the Oyster Bay line, has been made fully operational after great dedication and commitment from our volunteers and third party contractors.

Mount Graduates Share Commencement Stage With Family

A

s Mount Saint Mary College students graduated with their second family of peers and professors, some had the unique opportunity of walking the commencement stage alongside their relatives as well.

Nicole Cervone of Shirley, BA in Mathematics; Renee Hydo of Bethpage, BA in Mathematics; and Olivia Pelliccia of Hicksville, BA in Media Studies; are cousins who journeyed through all four years at the Mount with each other.

“It was such an unbelievable experience to be able to go through

this chapter of our lives side by side; going to college with them [Cervone and Pelliccia] was so incredible,” said Hydo. “We got to enjoy all of the moments together, go through all the hardships together, and continue to grow our bond by living together.”

As not only cousins, but best friends, Hydo noted that the three of them have always shared in their important milestones—from their Communions to high school graduations and every moment in between.

Seven enchanting private gardens in the seaside Village of Sea Cliff will be open on June 19, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

This year’s self-guided tour features a haven of specimen plantings that has been decades in the making, a microfarm tucked into a suburban backyard, a Japanese-inspired clifftop aerie, a garden of native plants and flowers and three charming enclaves designed for relaxation and entertainment.

Church Ministry Helps Neighbors In Need

embers of St. Ignatius Loyola Church’s Society of St. Vincent de Paul have been very busy before and during the worst of the pandemic and are helping residents in Hicksville recover from financial losses. The 10 members, or Vincentians, as they call themselves, are a diverse and intergenerational group of dedicated volunteers. The Society’s mission states they are, “A network of friends, inspired by Gospel values, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need.” The nonprofit’s motto is simply, “We Help People” and they have been doing this prior to and throughout the pandemic by providing direct relief to neighbors in need.

COVID-19 has been devastating to many Hicksville residents. It has been as catastrophic financially as it has been physically and emotionally.

Those struggling with poverty in Hicksville sought the members of the Society to seek help, spiritual comfort or just a compassionate ear to listen.

During the worst of the pandemic, many lost their employment and

furniture including, mattresses, dining room furniture, baby furniture, etc.

As we are now beginning to see the end of the pandemic and light at the end of the tunnel, many are hopeful for the promise this year will bring.

But last year, the members pivoted amid COVID-19 precautions and social distancing, but it did not deter them from providing help to residents in Hicksville. Great Neck Kids Take Action

F

ollowing the recent Operation Guardian of the Walls in Israel, two children in Great Neck decided to take action and raise money to support the wellbeing of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers.

Zachary H., 12 and Jordan P. 13, along with their family and friends, coordinated a local car wash raising more than $10,000 as a donation to Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF). Rabbi Levy at Beth Hadassah Synagogue in Great Neck helped mobilize much of the community to join and support the event.

“This initiative was a quick response to our emergency campaign,” FIDF Long Island Chapter Executive Director, Pninit Cole said. “It brought the community together and enabled everyone involved to unite and play a role in supporting IDF soldiers. This is a great example of solidarity and collective efforts. The world needs more Jordans and Zachs and we cannot wait to see what the two of them will do next. We at FIDF salute them.”

The COVID-19 pandemic has given many homeowners the opportunity and push that they needed to realize that they do not want to delay loving where they live. Whether that means embracing the home they are in and making it even better or selling that home and moving into the home that better fits their needs and dreams, there is a lot of activity in the real estate market these days.

LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT from page 3A “There are people in the market reevaluating their homes,” Clinton said. “Some are perhaps seeing in the market something that checks off the boxes in what they are searching for, while others are deciding to stay and do the work of a renovation.”

She said, some homeowners have seen [the pandemic] as an opportunity to start something new elsewhere. Where buyers are going is as varied as the reasons for moving.

“It could be in the same area they are in or perhaps for example sell on the North shore and buy something in the Hamptons that they could enjoy year round,” said Clinton. “The move from the city that some couples thought would happen three to five years from now to the suburbs just happened sooner as they now want a yard and more space.”

She said, other people are keeping their existing homes and having spent so much time in them over the last year decided to undertake a renovation which is a little more challenging than it was a year ago as building costs have increased.

“Some of the municipalities have increased processing times for getting permits,” Clinton said.

“And some appliances, for example, are on backorder with waiting times much longer than usual.”

These things should weigh heavily when making a decision whether home renovation is the right decision in the current marketplace.

“Our homes, over the last year have become our offices, gyms, restaurants and theatres,” Clinton said. “Our outdoor spaces became our sanctuaries, so just a thought as homeowners are now rethinking spaces and designing to meet their new needs in their homes.”

Staying in the same home and modifying it to fit your lifestyle is not always easy or the best solution, especially with the real estate market heavily favoring the seller. It is not an easy decision whether to make a home fit your needs or move to a new home that would instantly do that for you.

“This ties into people moving to accommodate the new spaces they need or those keeping their existing homes while hiring an architect and designer to reconfigure the space or add on,” Clinton said.

Adaptable to local precipitation and soil conditions, they suffer from very few insect and disease issues, especially when compared to non-native plants. Three Ways To Put A New Twist On An Old Home

Keep Historic Charm with Modern Materials

With so many gorgeous older homes in the Northeast, it’s important to find innovative ways to preserve a building’s historic roots while also making it a comfortable space for today. A major challenge in any renovation can be figuring out which areas of the home to update vs. preserve. As the owner of a 1910 house, I’m able to maintain its historic charm while also incorporating modern materials. If your home’s exterior is a little run down and you’re searching for ways to boost curb appeal: Keep the original configuration of windows and dormers to maintain the timeless appeal but try upgrading the siding and trim for a refreshed look. For example, I’m working with James Hardie on a complete exterior transformation. While I’m keeping the classic board and batten siding on our garage, I’m upgrading the main home’s exterior with Hardie plank, trim and panel products. I’ve been super impressed by the endless design options, including variety of colors.

Incorporate Bursts of Color

In the early 20th century, the paint color palette was not nearly as vast as the options we have now and generally centered around deep earth tones like clay, sage and off-whites. I like to incorporate pops of color in our home, particularly with neutral interior walls, to give it a fun, modern twist. I take weekly trips to the thrift store or estate sales and rotate the items on display, and with black-and-white walls, the neutral colors never fight with the design pieces. Bringing this same methodology to the exterior of our home, I chose the beautiful Arctic White ColorPlus Technology finish for the Hardie siding and used flowers to brighten up the look. The landscapes of Long Island are constantly changing throughout the year, from the evergreens and white snowfalls of winter to the pink peonies of spring and red poppies of summer. The flowers and trees of our yard play the same role as the art and decor hosted on the interior. And unlike our original cedar plank exterior that’s more work to maintain, I know that our fiber cement siding will provide lasting beauty for decades to come.

Durability is Key

Older houses with older electrical wiring are more vulnerable to fires, so when you’re remodeling your home it’s crucial to pick materials that are more fire resistant and can offer better protection in case of an emergency. After local friends of ours lost their incredible mid-19th-century home to a fire last year, we have been especially concerned about the fire risks that come with an older home. We knew that our old cedar siding was incredibly flammable and have found peace of mind in knowing our fiber cement siding is non-combustible. Another perk of the durability of fiber cement products is that we will no longer be woken up at the crack of dawn by our neighborhood woodpecker.

“I’m going to keep tons of miscellaneous stuff all over my garage so it’s cluttered and disorganized,” said no person, ever. Remember when you were a new homeowner and had every intention of parking your car(s) in the garage?

omehow, though, your garage filled up with ‘stuff’ over time and became a dumping ground that now looks and feels like an obstacle course. If the thought of venturing into your garage fills you with dread, fear not.

The warm weather is (finally) here, and it is the perfect time to organize your garage.

Whether you have a one or two-car garage, or maybe you do actually park your car in your garage, we could all use some garage organizing tips.

Choose a day/weekend when the weather is cooperative and you can devote the time and energy needed

Begin by taking everything out of the garage. Spread out all of your items on the driveway and lawn.

Have the supplies on hand that you will need. You will want large black bags for trash, blue bags for recycling and clear bags for donation. You will also want cleaning supplies.

Sort all items into categories Sort everything into four categories: keep; donate; sell; trash. Be honest with yourself.

Sort what you are keeping into categories Your “keep” pile should be sorted into categories: gardening and yard; sports and recreation; beach and lawn chairs; tools; auto supplies; luggage; holiday decorations, etc. Assess your empty garage to determine the best location for storage of an item. For example, bicycles should be kept near the entrance during warm weather months for easy access.

Make use of walls and vertical space to maximize storage Pay attention to the ‘prime real estate’ areas within your garage.

Install shelving, accessory hooks, pegboards, etc. to keep items off the floor. Clear, stackable weather-tight bins that are labeled with their contents work best.

Maintain your organized space Put items back in their designated places. Make garage organization a family project by periodically setting aside time to keep your garage organized.

ome renovations have skyrocketed over the past year, but some projects are more worthwhile than others. Local homeowners are wasting money on the wrong projects that won’t pay off in the end.

“Homeowners are redirecting their spending habits to make major changes to their homes, as opposed to spending money on their daily commute or on a family vacation,” said Window World Chairman and CEO Tammy Whitworth. “However, just because a project makes sense now doesn’t mean it will pay off down the road.”

Setting an unrealistic budget

1. Setting an unrealistic budget It pays to set aside extra money for your remodeling projects. Surprises pop up, and you don’t want to revisit projects later because of sub-par work now.

Plan on spending an extra 15 to 20 percent of the total project cost—just in case.

2. Being too trendy You may want what’s “new and now” in your home but think about resale value. What’s trendy today won’t necessarily be in style five years down the road. Consider classic designs and styles and get advice from a designer.

3. Only focusing on the inside Don’t forget about curb appeal. The outside of your home is the first thing buyers will notice. Spruce up your yard, power wash your house and replace your siding to boost your home’s curb appeal and resale value. Consider installing vinyl siding, which is energy efficient, deters termites and resists cracking and surface scratches.

4. Forgetting about the garage According to Remodeling’s Cost vs. Value report, replacing your garage door is one of the best home repair projects when it comes to resale value, with an average of 95 percent of the cost recouped. When it comes to color, white is the most popular and will offer the best resale.

5. Skimping on problems you can’t see Now is the time to fix air leaks, update insulation and check structural issues.

According to Energy Star, sealing air leaks and adding insulation can provide up to a 10 percent savings on your energy bills. Projects that cut energy costs help your wallet and low energy bills are also attractive to homebuyers.

6. Waiving window quality Energy-efficient windows regulate the temperature inside your home all year long, lowering utility bills. Install new replacement windows to increase your home’s resale value. A local home repair expert can come to your home for a free assessment to help determine the best options.

7. DIY all the time While you may want to tackle a DIY project, many remodeling projects should be left to the professionals. Safety and structural issues often come up when homeowners try to tackle in-depth projects themselves. Interview several contractors, reach out to their former clients and get advice from friends.

s COVID-19 positivity rates continue to plummet and vaccination numbers go up, Long Island parents are chafing at certain pandemic restrictions Governor Andrew Cuomo has continued to enforce. With only two weeks left in the school year, Cuomo did an about-face, revoking a previously voluntary indoor mask mandate and making face coverings mandatory on June 7. New York State has been taking its lead from the CDC. Health Commissioner Howard Zucker sent a letter to the national public health agency on June 4 indicating the state was going to issue an edict making indoor use voluntary for schools unless CDC policy ran counter to this.

At this point, three Long Island districts, Sachem, Massapequa and Patchogue-Medford, were mask-optional until Cuomo provided clarification shortly after the school day started on June 7. All three districts had to reinstate the rule that same day. In addition, the state sent written correspondence and made a phone call to Massapequa School Superintendent Lucille Iconis, who was informed the district was to reinstate the indoor mask mandate effective June 8. According to a press release sent to parents and posted on the district website, “The governor’s representative made it clear that the district would incur sanctions for non-compliance, which would include, but not be limited to monetary fines, school closures and the ability to operate in person. Based on these directives, effective immediately, all students, staff and visitors must wear masks indoors. The mask mandate also extends to school buses. The board of education has no other option at this point than to comply with the law and directives of the governor of New York State.”

Mask wearing continued to not be required for outdoor activities.

Otherwise, the mask wearing mandate is to remain in effect through the remainder of the school year, unless subsequent guidance to remove this mandate is issued by the state.

Legislature Introduces Bill Giving Combat Veterans PTO For Medical Treatment N

assau County Legislator Steve Rhoads joined with combat veterans, PTSD experts, Nassau County employees and union officials to announce the introduction of a bill that will provide an additional five paid days off of paid-time-off (PTO) for combat veterans in the Nassau County government employee workforce. This time can be used for VA appointments, physical therapy or psychological or stress-related treatment.

The legislation is authorized by New York State Military Law §242 that went into effect Nov. 11, 2019 and specifically applies to Nassau County officers or employees that are combat theater veterans and combat zone of operations veterans.

“I am proud to announce my support for a bill that provides our veterans who are now employed by Nassau County with five additional days of paid sick leave while utilizing mental or physical healthcare related services connected to combat,” Legislator Rhoads said. “It is crucial

“This bill is very overdue, and I am very happy to see it become law,” Matthew Schmitt, president of Nassau Police Veterans Association said.

“There are county workers who have to go to appointments that are related to their combat illnesses and their injuries, and some of these injuries are not visible. Many veterans don’t want to come forward and say they have PTSD, so this bill will give them five days that they can use as sick days, where they don’t have to say it’s PTSD related, only related to illness or combat injury.”

The bill, which went before legislative committees on June 14, is being introduced in June, which is also known as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness month. Combat veterans are especially susceptible to PTSD due to the rigor of their service and traumatic experience.

FROM THE DESK OF NASSAU COUNTY LEGISLATOR DELIA DERIGGI-WHITTON As the Minority Caucus representative on Nassau County Executive Laura Curran’s COVID-19 Economic Advisory Council, I am committed to determining the best uses of federal American Rescue Plan funding, and am laser-focused on ensuring that residents, businesses and organizations receive the support they need to regain what they lost during the pandemic and the boost they need to build back stronger.

This year, Nassau County is poised to receive nearly $200 million in American Rescue Plan Act. Of that amount, Curran has proposed $100 million in direct payments to Nassau County homeowners and a $25 million investment in grants, loans and other timely assistance for small businesses.

The county’s executive’s approach, which requires legislative approval, is based upon the feedback we

received through a survey conducted by the Nassau County Coronavirus Economic Advisory Council and Hofstra University.

Of the $25 million proposed for small business relief, Curran’s plan calls for dedicating approximately $10 million from those funds to launch the Boost Nassau Main Street Recovery Grant Program.

Consistent with the approach used for the county’s successful Restaurant Recovery Grant program, applicants with 10 or fewer employees will be eligible to receive up to $5,000 through the Main Street program, while those with 11 to 50 employees can apply for up to $10,000. Limited funds remain available for Restaurant Recovery Grants, which are open to full-service restaurants and banquet halls with catering staff, including those run by

In addition, the county plans to offer new stabilization loans to small businesses, including start-ups and minority- and women-owned business enterprises, which will enjoy longer payback periods and lower interest rates.

“Small businesses employ our neighbors, family and friends and are the heart of our vibrant downtown communities that need help,” Curran said in a recent interview. “We need to expand our efforts to support these businesses by providing direct assistance while also helping them take advantage of the programs available from federal and state sources as well.”

However, these funds are only as effective as our efforts to connect homeowners and small businesses with

them. Nassau County has launched a resource website at www.nassaucountyny.gov/ boostnassau and announced plans for a physical Boost Nassau Resource Center at Eisenhower Park to ensure residents and business owners will have every available resource—including rental assistance programs and support for nonprofits —at their fingertips. The Towns of Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay will be offered office space to make it a comprehensive, user-friendly one-stop shop for residents, businesses and nonprofits.

In 2013, Cuomo issued an executive order for all state agencies and authorities to publish their data online.

The State Legislature recently passed the “MTA Open Data Act.” Cuomo should sign this bill into law. The legislation directs the MTA to publish all statistical and factual information it maintains on the state’s online portal.

The Federal Transit Administration provides $1.5 billion in annual capital grants to the MTA. This is accomplished under the FTA Transit Award Management System (known as “TrAMS”), that is used to award and manage federal grants. The MTA currently manages an active

and no recent financial activity can be viewed. Change orders for construction projects over $100,000 have to provide documentation on how they are fair and reasonable.

The FTA has its own independent engineering consultant firms to supplement in-house staff for oversight.

These companies provide both oversight and technical assistance for capital projects. The FTA usually assigns their own engineering consultant firms to those projects over $100 million or more. Engineering firms monitor the progress of these major capital projects and prepare monthly progress reports. These monthly reports are made available to MTA Chairperson Pat Foye, MTA HQ staff, MTA board members, MTA agency presidents, each MTA operating agency chief engineer, FTA HQ and regional office senior management teams and in-house project oversight staff.

Students and teachers finally celebrated their efforts in helping the members of their community. Students heard from headmaster Dr. Daniel Vitow, Dr. Robert and Mrs. Minoo Ohebshalom and Rabbi Barak Levy. To conclude the dedication, the Hatzolah ambulance officially debuted its release with a jovial ribbon-cutting ceremony held by the North Shore families who marshaled the Chai for Chai campaign.

In his opening remarks, Rabbi Levy had referenced a passage introduced in Sanhedrin 17b: “A talmid haham (Torah scholar) is not allowed to live in a city that does not have these 10 things: a beit din (law court) that metes out punishments; a tzedakah fund that is collected by two people and

distributed by three; a synagogue; a bathhouse (mikveh); a bathroom; a doctor; a craftsperson; a blood-letter; and a teacher of children.” Believed to be the largest volunteer ambulance service in the world, the Hatzolah Organization is comprised of more than 1,000 volunteer EMTs and paramedics who answer more than 70,000 calls each year. Hatzolah volunteers are our true heroes for life. Thank you to all those who made this extraordinary feat possible!

Things We Take For Granted To say that the 2020 was a year of frustration is an understatement. Being confined to your house for most hours of the day created tensions of every type. Of the many irritants that I can think of, one of the worst was getting access to the Internet. While many of us in the big cities or suburbs were able to get some service, millions of Americans have little or no service.

The COVID-19 pandemic presented many challenges to people who need the Internet to carry out normal daily activities. Millions of people worked from home. Students need access to follow up on lesson plans. Retirees need family connections. People with serious health problems, unable to go to a doctor’s office or unwilling to go to an emergency room, needed an

There is no doubt that many people in the New York downstate region were able to get Internet service, but there are countless numbers of local people who cannot afford service or who live in areas where the service is spotty. It is estimated that 24 million people have

only minimum access to the Internet.

An astounding 16 million people, who live in rural areas, have no service at all.

Based on census figures, 18 per cent of children in public or private schools did not have an Internet connection.

Twenty-two per cent of people over the age of 65 had no access to a high-speed connection.

For more than two decades, there has been a battle in Congress on how to get high-speed connectivity to all Americans. Legislation has been passed to give funds to local telephone companies, but the moneys are not invested in modernizing the systems to provide additional access. Moneys have been set aside to help poor people who can’t pay for any service, but somehow it never is spent to expand access.

One Westchester community has a pending cable contract that would help indigent families get a lower cable rate and access to the Internet, but internal political bickering has delayed action for more than four years.

There is one flicker of hope on the political horizon. President Biden has proposed to spend $388 billion on Internet access as part of his infrastructure plan. Republicans claim that access to broadband is not “infrastructure.” Hopefully, some plan is approved by late August, as the need for these services is critical.

GREAT NECK NORTH GIRLS GOLF WINS The Great Neck District Girls Golf Team had an eight-shot victory over Garden City (886-894) to win their second consecutive Nassau County Championship at Bethpage State Park on June 2.

The championship tournament, which took place over two days, was a very close competition from the start.

Great Neck concluded the first day with a three-shot lead over Garden City (446-449). The team maintained that lead for the first half of day two, as both teams shot 220 on the front nine.

Syosset High School’s Speech and Debate team, Forensics, defended their title as New York State champions at the state finals in late April, winning for the third straight year.

The team also placed first in the Debate division, first in the Speech division, and third in Congressional Debate/Student Congress.

about neurofibromatosis (NF), a disorder that affects a Mineola student.

Students at Hicksville’s Burns Avenue Elementary School are connecting with U.S. troops overseas. Back in November, in-person learners in first through fifth grade wrote letters and colored pictures of positivity and gratitude to troops in honor of Veterans Day. The letters were mailed to Colonel Brian Mayer, who was on a year-long deployment to Ali Al Salem Air Base as a maintenance group

commander in Kuwait. In May, students received a thank you note in the mail, as well as a picture of Colonel Mayer with his troops holding the cards from the Burns Avenue students. Colonel Mayer wrote in part, “The smiles and joy we got when we read these pictures made us understand again why we are here, for the love of our country and for the people like the students of Burns Avenue Elementary.”

Homeless Man Arrested In Bethpage

The Eighth Squad reports the arrest of a homeless man for a robbery that occurred on June 1 at 4:50 p.m. in Bethpage.

The victim followed the subject and confronted him. The confrontation escalated and the subject pulled out a knife and pointed it at the victim. The victim backed up and called 911. Officers arrived and placed the 20-year-old defendant Alexander Almonte into custody without further incident.

There were no injuries reported.

Almonte has been charged with two counts of first-degree robbery and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned on June 2 in Mineola.

Duncan Whiteside

Leading Advocate for Developmental Disabilities, Dies at 85 Duncan Whiteside died of natural causes on June 10 after a long battle with Parkinson’s. Mr. Whiteside was a longtime resident of Port Washington, serving as past President of the Port Washington Community Chest. He also served as the Treasurer of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, and as chair of the Congregation’s Veatch Program.

Born in Boston, Mr. Whiteside attended St. Paul’s School, graduated from Harvard and received an MBA from New York University. He studied Russian in the army, and in 1959, was one of just 75 Americans chosen by President Eisenhower to represent the United States at the American National Exhibition in Moscow. Mr. Whiteside joined Chase Manhattan Bank as an international lending officer based in Frankfurt, but left the bank in the 1970’s and spent the rest of his career in the nonprofit sector, at Mobilization for Youth, the Council on Adoptable Children, and as the Director of One to One, created by Geraldo Rivera in the wake of the expose of Willowbrook State School. Mr. Whiteside cofounded the Maidstone Foundation

in 1983, which helped people with rare or multiple disabilities to obtain the help and services they needed. He served on many nonprofit boards, usually being drafted as Treasurer. Mr. Whiteside used his Russian language skills at Maidstone, providing direct services to Russian immigrants with disabled family members.

Deliberately keeping Maidstone small, Mr. Whiteside could be found at events for the families Maidstone served, rowing disabled children around a lake while singing Russian folk songs. He served as Vice Chair of the Governor’s Planning Council for Developmental Disabilities for many years and Board chair of the Epilepsy Foundation of New York City. He loved sailing, traveling the world, nature, his pets, and being a father. He will be remembered for his kindness, curiosity, sense of humor, adventure and fun, and his commitment to social justice. He leaves his wife, Mariette Bates, and his children Nicholas Whiteside, Michael Whiteside, and Sylvia Whiteside Morgan, and four grandchildren.

Susan Cooper Hodge Susan Cooper Hodge, 61, of 21 Beacon Avenue, Warwick, Rhode Island, left this world suddenly, on Sunday, May 16. She was found in her garden, one of her favorite places on earth.

Born in November 1959 in Port Washington, New York, she was a graduate of the Canterbury School in New Milford, Connecticut, and Cornell University with a degree in Ornamental Horticulture. Before having children, she worked in the horticulture industry designing interior installations.

An adult émigré to Rhode Island, Susan loved her life here near the water. She grew up racing Blue Jays at Manhasset Bay Yacht Club and on Long Island Sound.

Not one to sit quietly by, she dove enthusiastically into a wide range of organizations with her energy and talent, including Meeting Street School, Rocky Hill School, the Girl Scouts, Canterbury School and the Cornell Club of Rhode Island. More recently, she built a house in Warwick Neck near to the Warwick Neck Country Club. She was often seen buzzing around in her golf cart playing in the Twilight League (which she created), as well as the Eighteen Hole, and Nine Hole Leagues. She also joined the Garden Club, Book Club, Bridge Club, Knitting Club and Mahjong Club as well as serving on the Board of Governors and various committees.

The Warwick Neck Improvement Association also benefitted from her gardening expertise.

Susan is survived by her daughter, Katherine M. Hodge, son Evan A. Hodge, and two fur babies, all of Warwick, RI; sister, Beth C. Kubinec (John) of Louisville, Kentucky; sister-in-love, Bea M. Cooper (widow of Donald); aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews, retaining the title of “Aunt Soup.” She is preceded in death by her best friend, soulmate, and husband, David A. Hodge of Portsmouth, RI; parents Peter and Jean Cooper of Southold, NY; brother, Donald M. Cooper of Little Falls, NJ. Walter “Wally” Kane

Wally Kane died Monday, May 31, 2021 just shy of his 88th birthday at Teresian House Nursing Home in Albany after living with Alzheimer’s for eight years. He was the imp of Carmel Gardens East and was adored by his caretakers for his air kisses, hand holding and thank yous all around.

Wally Kane was a big personality in a compact body. He was the pied piper of Reid Avenue, the spontaneous host for infamous parties, the fisherman who didn’t catch fish, and the funniest guy who never got the punch line out because he was laughing too hard to get there. He was a prolific studio musician in NYC and made all the music for Sesame Street for 40 years.

He was a great Dad, a loyal and loving family man, a friend to young people and a most generous and enthusiastic home maker, craftsman, collector, cook, adventurer and boatsman. He was our hero.

On Reid Avenue in Port Washington, NY with his wife, Mary, Wally created a warm and inviting home and with a lively circle of families affectionately called the Reid Avenue Irregulars, produced beloved traditions, hatched crazy adventures and nurtured deep and abiding love for neighbors.

As “Captain Outrageous” he fished, clammed and innately navigated the creeks and inlets of Peconic Bay with his family, friends and musician cronies by day and served a killer Beefeater martini with oysters from his stash hanging off his dock in the evening. As “safety man” he sent us out into the wild world with the prayer, “watch out for the a…holes”.

Wally was born in Brooklyn and grew up in Ridgewood, Queens where he played the fife at six because he got to wear the cool uniform, the hat with the tall feather panache and spats. Twice he received NY Times concert reviews that said he played with “panache”, which he thought explained everything.

Wally was a woodwind doubler and played all the clarinets, flutes, saxophones, bassoons, and recorders. At 19 he toured the US with the Sauter-Finnegan Orchestra, and band leaders Eddie Sauter

and Bill Finnegan would remain his beloved mentors the rest of his life. “I just love those men” he often exclaimed.

With Ballet USA and Westside Story, he and Mary toured the US and Europe. Wally played Broadway shows, Barbra Streisand television specials, the Kraft Music Hall, and was in the Tonight Show Band with his best friend Don Ashworth.

Together the two created epic lunacy and an enduring family bond that lives on in their children. He was the baritone player with the NY Saxophone Quartet which took him to Europe and the East.

The 1960s-80s were a boom time for music recording in NYC and Wally considered himself incredibly lucky to be one of the few go-to reed players for session dates with recording artists, and for television, films, and commercials.

He worked with Frank Sinatra, Barbara Streisand, Igor Stravinsky, Stan Getz, Liza Minnelli, Leonard Bernstein, Bill Evans, Eddie Daniels, Roberta Flack, Billy Joel, Tony Bennett, Grover Washington Jr., Joni Mitchell, Moondog, Hubert Laws, Paul McCandless, The Manhattan Transfer, Steely Dan, and so many others. He performed with the NY Philharmonic, NYC Ballet and at Carnegie Hall. And thanks to the lifelong membership efforts of the Musicians Union, Local 802, his pension and recording residuals supported his retirement.

But some of Wally’s most treasured and honored work was with the band that made the music for Sesame Street where he brought his “far out” humor and technical wizardry. He’s the recorder on Sing, flute on Don’t Want to Live on the Moon, and alto sax on Put Down the Duckie, among so many memorable tunes from the show. In his retirement he fly-fished the waters of Long Island’s East End and tied exquisite flies using Big Bird’s yellow feathers.

Wally is survived by his wife, Saint Mary, as he called her, of East Greenbush, NY, Elissa the oldest and her wife Lynne of Albany, NY, and David, his brilliant boy and his wife Adrienne of Port Washington, NY. Grandchildren Nora, Samuel and Sophia all play or sing with Wally’s beautiful sound.

The Kanes have great appreciation for Wally’s caretakers, especially during a year of COVID lockdown.

Garden City Baseball Clinches Playoff Spot

ith an 8-4 record, varsity baseball has clinched at least a wildcard berth in the Nassau County Conference II playoffs.

The top six teams in Nassau Conference II make the playoffs. The four wild card teams played each other June 10 and the two wild card winners advanced to the best of three semi-finals starting June 12.

The two winners advanced to the championships June 16-18. While MacArthur, East Meadow and Mepham have one great pitcher each, Garden City has many. Seniors committed to play NCAA baseball.

They include Frank Santeramo (SUNY Maritime), Matthew Mohen (American International), Joe Frandina (Gettysburg) and Chris Blum (Saint Olaf’s); Santeramo and Mohen were ranked in the preseason top 50 players by Nassau Baseball. In addition, the pitching corps includes southpaws Pat Heber, Frandina, Simon Ferris and right-handed pitchers Gabe Beschloss, co-captain Aidan Magnotta, and Liam Rooney; their combined ERA is 2.17.

The season opener versus New Hyde Park disappointed; the Gladiators started St. John’s commit Luke Orban throwing fastballs in the high 80s, who held the Trojans to just two runs. Garden City turned around quickly in the second game as Frandina took the mound surrendering only one run; the Trojans scored five times, with the remarkable emergence of freshman shortstop Jack 2

In the Trojans third game versus New Hyde Park, Heber threw a three hitter, although the Gladiator’s Orban stirred up excitement with a 400-foot home run. Trojans catcher Joe Infante (.447) showed his own power with his first home run, and Magnotta contributed 2 RBIs; Mohen recorded his first save.

Pitching has been complemented by improved batting averages as the season has progressed including Joe Wood (.316), Charles Iovino (.333), Francesco Ingrassia (.269) and Heber (.286). The lack PORT/MAN LEGALS 6-18-21

of preseason scrimmages had a negative impact on the defense.

On May 13, Heber made a magnificent start against East Meadow, striking out nine batters and hitting a home run, as Ingrassia drove in two runs and scored one and Mohen earned his second save. On May 24, Santeramo turned in the Trojans first complete game start, defeating MacArthur 5-1, with Fanning continuing to make all the plays at shortstop, getting three hits and driving in one run while scoring two. The Trojans then pounded Long Beach in two consecutive games: Varsity faced off at home against Long Beach, with an impressive start by Aidan Magnotta, followed by another impressive start by Heber and scoreless relief efforts by Beschloss and Ferris.

The varsity had climbed into second place by Memorial Day, setting up a showdown with first place and the undefeated Calhoun Colts; Santeramo took the ball against a voracious offense and threw a three-hitter, walking nobody, leading the Trojans to a 3-0 holiday victory; he threw 59 strikes in just 84 pitches. Calhoun was stunned, but came out with guns blazing the next day and demolished Garden City. The two teams might see each other in the playoffs. The remaining games are against Great Neck South and Mepham, the latter who will likely throw Bucknell commit Tyler O’Neill against the Trojans.
