The Joy Fu Senior Program provides residents with different activities each week including ping pong, Mah Jong, chess, arts & crafts, exercise and cultural education. Meetings are held throughout the year.

Beautyfluff Receives A Sign Grant From The Port Washington BID

he Port Washington Business Improvement District (B.I.D) is pleased to announce Beautyfluff as a recipient of a Sign Grant. Beautyfluff owners, Eric and Yennie Chou, opened their Port Washington store, located at 95A Main Street, in 2013. They have since created their own skin care collection and now offer training and certification programs for estheticians and esthetic specialists.

In addition to adding new signage, they have recently expanded their space allowing for additional treatment space for their customers. Eric and Yennie explain, “We want to create a BEAUTYFLUFF experience for everyone to be proud of coming here.”

Holly Byrne, Executive Director at the Port Washington B.I.D. shares, “I am so pleased to represent the Port Washington Business Improvement District in awarding this grant to Beautyfluff. The loyalty of their clientele is a testament to their commitment to exceptional service and quality care.”

Eligible businesses, both new and established within the defined business district can apply for grants for funding to assist with costs of improvements to the facade

Mitzvah Day On Sunday, May 1, Port Washington’s own Community Synagogue held another successful Mitzvah Day. The annual event was run by the synagogue’s clergy, administration, and over 250 volunteers, which aimed to help the community in various ways.

In addition, over 20 nonprofit organizations helped throughout the day, guiding volunteers to projects, such as crayon recycling and cooking lasagnas.

These organizations included the Gift of Life Bone Marrow Registry, the North Hempstead Animal Shelter, the Stepping Stone Preschool and many more. Finally, many holocaust survivors closed out the

day, telling those present their stories, and passing on their knowledge and history to the youth.

In the Jewish religion, a Mitzvah is a commandment to do a good deed or charitable service. The Torah has 613

commendable actions, ranging from visiting and helping the sick to donating money and items to those in need. Donations like these were one of the main focuses of Mitzvah Day. Collecting food was a great success; over 800 cans of food were donated to Israeli families in need, 300 snack bags filled with healthy food were brought to Our Lady of Fatima, 40 lasagnas were made for local EMT workers and the Littig House, and 40 challas were baked. Over a thousand pounds of cleaning supplies and food were Nonprofits set up booths at the Community donated to a local food pantry, $300 was Synagogue. While the success of Mitzvah Day is in part due to the number of donations that occurred, the community’s enthusiasm is what makes Mitzvah day great. The 258 volunteers that assisted, with a wide range of ages, show how amazing Port Washington’s community truly is. Many children helped out throughout the day, displaying the willingness of youth in Port Washington to be mensches, a Yiddish word meaning a person of honor.

The Road Not Taken: Conservatism Today Review of The Right: The Hundred Year War For American Conservatism JOSEPH SCOTCHIE jscotchie@antonmediagroup.com

ooks on American conservatism will always be more interesting than those about liberalism, if only because the losing side has a more poignant tale to tell. The term conservative is woefully out of place in a nation built around high-flying rhetoric: “All men are created equal,” “Life liberty and the pursuit of happiness,” proclaims the Declaration of Independence. Even the more somber U.S. Constitution seeks a “more perfect union,” guided by “We, the people.”

The Right begins with the glory days of the 1920s: The presidencies of Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge. Sick of war, Americans craved normalcy. With this Republican duo they received it in bunches: No to the League of Nations, closed borders, industries protected, the family farm boomed alongside such roaring cities as New York and Chicago.

The Great Depression, caused by over-lending practices, ended those good times. The New Deal, punctuated by World War II, left conservatism stuck in a permanent Loserville.

The conservatism of William F. Buckley Jr.’s National Review hoped to bring “the intellectuals around.” Those efforts failed.

The heartland beckoned. The Buckleyites had no qualms. Buckley, James Burnham and Frank Meyer all sang the praises of homespun Middle American values.

William R. Rusher wanted to form a third party in time for the 1976 elections, featuring a dream ticket of Ronald Reagan and George Wallace. Conservatives wanted to “stand athwart” history. Populists sought not just to stop it in its tracks, but overthrow the entire edifice.

Such men as Joe McCarthy, Wallace, Barry Goldwater, Pat Buchanan and Donald Trump come in for special scorn. Warranted? McCarthy’s witch hunt against communist infiltration was entirely justified (see M. Stanton Evans’s Blacklisted By History). Wallace made his fame by opposing school busing. How’d it turn out? In the 1950s, American test scores were number one worldwide. Six decades later, test scores have the U.S. as 13th in reading, 19th in science, and a dismal 38th in mathematics. Busing—and the enormous dislocations it caused—are a major factor. Concerning trade, immigration and opposition to New World Order wars, has Buchanan been wrong

about anything?

The prairie fire of the 1970s paved the way for Reagan’s 1980 victory. The Reagan-Buckley era had arrived. Was America a conservative nation? Was the GOP a conservative party? Was it a Reagan party? For eight years, Reagan had to deal with a Democratic Congress.

In the Senate, the GOP was led by Howard Baker and Robert Dole, two solons who ran against Reagan in the 1980 primaries.

Reagan was one of those great men whose strengths and weaknesses were one and the same. The man was extraordinarily amicable and popular (ask the Democrats). He also held a peace pipe to the liberal East Coast GOP establishment that he had defeated. George H.W. Bush was his running mate. Worse, Reagan named James A. Baker III, a man who did everything possible to defeat Reagan in both 1976 and 1980, as his chief of staff.

That remains inexplicable.

Reagan succeeded on the economy, while presiding over the retreat of the Soviet Union. If not for the defeat of Robert Bork as his 1987 Supreme Court nominee, the social issues leg of the conservative agenda might have triumphed. Reagan was a longtime New Dealer. A dose of liberalism remained in his nervous system. Reagan was liberal on immigration. In 1986, he signed an amnesty bill into law, one that did nothing to address the border crisis. The decade saw a massive increase in legal immigration. The issue would bitterly divide conservatives for the next 30 years. Meanwhile, the nation that elected Richard Nixon and Reagan to landslide victories was lost forever.

Rusher had the right idea. If conservatives had a golden moment, it was not 1980, but 1970. That year, James Buckley, the pundit’s older brother running on the Conservative Party line won a U.S. Senate seat in New York. Conservatives had the best of both worlds: the Democratic and Republican party candidates both whipped. The Conservative Party was very much a National Review thing; its editors wrote the party platform and gave its candidates much publicity.

When William F. Buckley, Jr. attempted to launch that publication, he was told by his publisher, Henry Regnery, not to base a conservative journal in New York City. Go where its reader base is. What if NR had been based in Washington, D.C., instead? A third party could become a national party. The Conservative Party has fallen apart, mainly because the New York that elected James Buckley has also disappeared.

Americans did not want a Reagan

Revolution that targeted entitlement programs. They would take eight years of peace and prosperity. The turning point was not the 2003 Iraq War as much as the 1991 Persian Gulf War. Up until then, all American involvement in 20th century wars were initiated by a Democrat (World War I, Wilson; World War II, Roosevelt; The Korean War, Truman; Vietnam, Kennedy, and Johnson). Republicans had the honor of either ending those wars or heralding in normalcy (Harding and Coolidge with World War I; Reagan winning the Cold War; Eisenhower ending the Korean War and Nixon settling Vietnam).

All that ended when George H.W. Bush went to war in 1991 against Saddam Hussein over the latter’s invasion of Kuwait. With the Cold War resolved, it was time for more of the same. Instead, endless war: Iraq, Somalia, Haiti, Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Iraq again, Libya and Ukraine. Conservatives supported them all. On the eve of the 1991 war, conservatism was still defined by three popular pundits: Buckley, Buchanan and George Will. Buckley and Will said “yes” to war. Buchanan said “no.” The latter’s argument was the road not taken.

The author acknowledges populism’s legitimate demands: Border security, national sovereignty, “an emphasis on the condition of working people without college degrees” and a “reluctance toward humanitarian interventionism abroad.”

Continetti just doesn’t view Trump as the right messenger.

Continetti nails his fellow conservatives for not seeing the Trump wave. How could they? The Trump phenomenon was a white working-class thing.

Conservatives live in Washington and New York. They are college-educated, usually at elite universities.

Trump Country is a million miles away from their world.

The Right is valuable history. It captures the sheer agony, pathos, despair and futility of being an authentic conservative in liberal society. The Old Right had ideas, convictions and principals. It lacked a political party to articulate those ideas into electoral politics.

Conservatives have been routed so thoroughly that the only time they win is when the join the Left: Anti-Donald Trump, anti-Robert E. Lee and pro-same sex marriage.

Compared to the cave-ins of the conservative elite, the hell-forleather populism of McCarthy, Wallace, Buchanan and Trump all had a lonely integrity to it.

t all started with a dream for Martin Freeman. That was the seed planted for Breeders, a British-American dark comedy about parenting co-created by the British actor with partners Chris Addison and Simon Blackwell that airs on FX. Freeman stars as Paul Worsley, who, along with partner Ally Grant (Daisy Haggard) are raising two children in London and dealing with the day-to-day of modern life. And while the premise doesn’t seem remarkable, the real-life approach in the plots is what sets this show apart from familial sitcoms full of precocious children and clueless parents.

It all started with that aforementioned walk through slumberland for the Hampshire native.

“I dreamt the scene of the first episode almost verbatim,” he recalled. “Those two things are cheek-by-jowl where one second you can go, ‘Oh my God, I would do anything for your kid’ and the next second you’re calling your baby a prick. I recognize those complexities. It sort of lent itself to me thinking that there could be something in this—a comedy. Yet it gets to points so dark and so harsh that I don’t think we’ve seen that before in a parental context. If it’s happened, apologies to that show. But I haven’t seen it to that extent that it’s hopefully very

realistic and three dimensional in a way that I think parenting and family life is. I partnered up with Chris Addison and Simon Blackwell and we created the show together.

We’re all fathers. We all had an understanding that parenting is complicated—that’s not a new concept. We kind of laid it out there in all of our development stories where we were telling the least flattering stories about ourselves and the most embarrassing part of us being dads.”

Now in its third season, Breeders mines the complexities of parenting with deft pivots that veer between relatable drama and pointed humor, something Freeman found lacking in other shows trolling the same subject matter.

“We knew there was some comedic life in [parenting], where when you admit to your worst things, it’s very funny after the event, but not particularly funny at the time,” he said. “There were shows that I really liked that deal with parents and kids, but I was waiting for someone to scream at their kids.

You’ve just told that kid four times to put that down and he just put a hole in the wall and you’re going, ‘Oh, come on, put that down.’

No, when is the bit when you truly lose your mind with rage at a kid through repetition and frustration. We wanted that to be very present in our show. I wanted us to have the bravery to go there when necessary.”

Have complete faith in our Creator and come into today. Yes, it’s good to have goals, visions, but try not to be so focused on them that you miss what you have right now. Sometimes, people lose the precious things they have by overlooking them and only going after what they want. They are so

intent on reaching that goal, slaves of that desire, doing great things, even their family is taken for granted, continuing to be distracted and thinking all the time about what’s next. Excessive preoccupation with the future caused them to lose the gifts of the present.

Each of us has a mission with a personal connection to the Almighty, which gives us the ability to accomplish what at first might seem impossible. The way to this is by making each day count, bringing meaning and vitality to every moment.

Better Alternatives To The Multi Billion Dollar Hochul Brooklyn To Queens Subway Connection Already Available There are better alternatives to Governor Kathy Hochul’s new Brooklyn to Queens Subway Connection. The cost could easily be several billion more than the 2016. Regional Planning Association cost estimate of $1 to $2 billion. All MTA Chairman Janno Lieber could commit to is that the cost would be less than $10 billion. Hochul and other project supporters forgot to tell you about the existing G line service that has been running from Brooklyn to Queens for decades. It was built as part of the municipal Independent Subway (IND) system constructed in the 1930’s. Whomever provided her with the proposed system map, air-brushed this out. Reminds me of the late Soviet Union dictator Joseph Stalin. He would have people who fell out of favor removed from all previous photos.

In Brooklyn, G line service could be extended beyond Church Avenue to Coney Island Stillwell Avenue Terminal. This would provide connections to the D, N & Q lines.

The G line Fulton Street train station is located several blocks from the Atlantic Avenue/Barclay Center LIRR/NYC Transit subway station complex. A simple underground passageway could be constructed.

This could provide a direct indoor connection to the G line from the 2,3,4 & 5 IRT, B.D.N,Q & R BMT subway lines along with the Atlantic branch LIRR. Upon initiation of service to support East Side Access to Grand Central Terminal, the LIRR will convert this branch to a simple scoot service between Jamaica and Flatbush Avenue, maintaining stops at East NY and Nostrand Avenue.

The common mistake of solely focusing on the past or on the unknown future is that we often miss the appreciation and the joy of the present. King David said (Psalm 118:24): “This is the day the Almighty has made.” Today is a gift from our Heavenly Father.

Upgrading the East NY LIRR station might make it more attractive for those who use any of the five mentioned subway lines. Majority’s Reforms Helping Resolve Long Term Fiscal Problem For decades, Nassau County has been plagued with refund liability resulting from successful property tax certiorari challenges made by residents and businesses. Under the “County Guarantee,” Nassau fully refunds county, town and school taxes from these assessment challenges even though it only receives a small fraction of the original overpayment.

This inequity costs Nassau tens of millions of dollars annually, has led to bond rating decreases and is largely responsible for the continued existence of a financial control board. Over the years, the refund amount paid out by Nassau

County is in the $1 billion range, substantial amounts of which

were paid with borrowed monies.

Meanwhile, county residents have received no additional services in return for these payments.

Thanks to a dedicated revenue fund created by the Republican Majority, the county has a historic opportunity to pay off millions of dollars of outstanding tax refunds owed to residents and businesses.

In so doing, we can bring the county’s tax refund liability as close to current as possible. The Republican Majority’s special revenue fund is funded by sales tax revenues in 2021 that were much higher than the prior administration’s wildly

erroneous forecast. In fact, in 2021 the county took in $360 million more than had been forecast by the prior administration. These monies will be placed in a “lock box” account to be spent primarily to pay tax refunds owed by the county.

The Republican Majority’s reserve fund is a win-win for the county and residents; it will allow the county to finally pay refunds it owes to residents and businesses, and it will benefit taxpayers by eliminating millions of dollars in compounding interest accumulating against that debt. This could not have come at a better time as

residents and businesses continue to recover from the pandemic.

Reducing the county’s tax refund exposure puts the county in better position with rating agencies, which can lower our cost of borrowing. It also is a big step toward ending the oversight board’s control period. This good government initiative will help resolve an issue that has plagued the county for decades, free up taxpayer monies to be spent on services for our residents and help boost our economy at this crucial time.

The Guidance Center’s Work ‘Beyond Our Walls’ North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center is known throughout Long Island as the pre-eminent mental health organization for youth and families, providing individualized, culturally sensitive therapeutic services that serve to bring hope and healing to those experiencing mental health challenges.

For nearly 70 years, the Guidance Center has been listening to your needs and concerns, and responding swiftly and compassionately.

Since May is Mental Health Awareness Month, we wanted to share with you some important information on our offerings.

As we told you in our April Anton column, we shifted to a hybrid model of service within days of the pandemic’s beginning, seeing clients both in person and via a secure telehealth platform.

But if you picture the work of the Guidance Center as taking place only inside our three buildings or via a virtual platform, with a counselor and client sitting in an office or communicating via a smartphone or computer, think again.

Many of our innovative programs happen beyond our walls, in places that range from state parks to schools to homes.

The Guidance Center’s Wilderness Respite Program, now in its 23rd year, provides a unique opportunity for at-risk adolescents to put down their tech devices and participate in hikes and other nature activities that help them gain confidence and make lasting friendships.

Nature takes a leading role in our two organic gardens, located at our main headquarters in Roslyn Heights and our Marks Family Right from the Start 0-3+ Center in Manhasset. By weeding, seeding

and tending to the crops, kids blossom as they learn important skills such as self-confidence, cooperation and responsibility.

The Guidance Center also has a Nature Nursery, where our youngest clients use all their senses as they touch pine cones or paint on an outdoor “canvas.” The textures, sounds and sights help children explore their creative sides and learn skills to help cope with difficult feelings.

In addition to therapy, our Latina Girls Project incorporates monthly outings to places such as theaters, museums and more. These trips boost the teens’ confidence and sense of independence and help them discover the larger world.

In 2019, the trips expanded to include outings for boys that also have been a huge success.

Students from 5-21, who’ve had a hard time succeeding in school have a great alternative with our Intensive Support Program (ISP), held at three Nassau County BOCES schools. There, they receive academic help and counseling, with therapists on site to help them flourish emotionally and academically.

We also work in Westbury High School and middle school with our Teen Intervene and Too Good for Drugs programs, designed to prevent substance and alcohol use.

For children and teens who need our help but can’t come to our offices, the Guidance Center provides intensive in-home therapy with our Clinical Care Coordination Team (CCCT). CCCT aims to lessen acute symptoms, restore clients to prior levels of functioning, and build and strengthen natural supports.

Through CCCT, our goal is to reduce unnecessary emergency room visits, hospitalizations and residential placements.

Our Coordinated Children’s Services Initiative (CCSI) supports families with the coordination of services in their homes and communities, identifying and accessing resources, providing advocacy and helping children and families gain the skills and tools needed to be self-sufficient.

Through our Family Advocate Program, parents who have been through mental health crises with their own children are trained to offer peer support for families by joining them at special education meetings, offering support groups and providing many other resources.

In addition, we have enhanced services to the clients in our Diane Goldberg Maternal Depression Program by adding yoga classes and self-care outings.

As you can see, the Guidance Center is always thinking “outside the box,” creating innovative programs that meet the needs of the community and enhance the therapeutic value of all our services.

Connolly Elementary School Launches Therapy Dog Program Students alleviate stress, practice reading skills with furry friend book, Notes on Nursing, she recorded how having an animal companion helped her patients recover.

Dr. Sigmund Freud revived a public interest in animal therapy, specifically with dogs, in the 1930s when he brought his own pet Jo-Fi to therapy sessions and noted the calming effect it had on his patients.

In 1961, Dr. Boris Levinson became known as the “father of animal-assisted therapy” when he accidentally left his dog Jingles alone with a young patient who was withdrawn and nonverbal. On returning, Levinson found the boy communicating with Jingles.

He began using Jingles in his child psychotherapy sessions and wrote a book in 1969 called PetOriented Child Psychotherapy.

Dogs are most often used in animal-assisted therapy because of their nonjudgmental nature and desire to protect others.

Bideawee, which also has locations in Westhampton and Manhattan, launched its Pet Therapy Program in 1986 and trains handlers and animals to visit schools, nursing homes and hospitals.

Therapy Dogs of Long Island is a nonprofit run by volunteers who train their own dogs and bring them to children and adults in homes, hospitals, nursing homes, camps, schools, libraries and organizations.

onnolly Elementary School in Glen Cove is giving students a break from the “ruff” school day with its first therapy dog program.

Students are given time to pet, unwind and even practice their reading skills with a therapy dog to relieve stress. Connolly began a pilot program through which selected students meet with a Chocolate Labrador named Maddie and her handler twice a month. The school plans to bring in more dogs and extend the program to any student interested in participating.

“Coming back from the pandemic, a lot of kids began showing anxiety and nervousness, so this was one of the ways we wanted to help them relax,” Principal Bryce Klatsky said. “Dog therapy has been around for decades and has been proven to have therapeutic benefits such as reducing stress and improving mood.”

Teachers Patty Lucci and Morgan Steiger spearheaded the program, which was sponsored by local business AMP Construction and brings in dogs from Bideawee in Wantagh and Long Island Therapy Dogs.

The first few sessions were geared toward students in the school’s reading program and gave them a chance to read to dogs without fear of judgement.

“It really helps children who are shy or afraid to read in front of their peers. They could pet the dog and calm their nerves when they read. It also gives them a bit of extra love, which is sometimes all they need,” said Lucci.

While animal-assisted therapy has been growing in popularity in recent history, the practice has been studied for over a century. Florence Nightingale, considered the founder of modern nursing, recognized its potential in the late 1800s when she paired children and adults in psychiatric institutions with small pets. Harborfest Dock Day And Craft Festival Is June 5

he Port Washington Chamber of Commerce and the Town of North Hempstead will be presenting the 30th annual HarborFest Dock Day and Craft Festival on Sunday, June 5. All events officially begin at 10 a.m. at the Town Dock and lower Main Street. Admission is free and there will be free parking at the train station and Manorhaven Park. The Admiral Sponsors of HarborFest are Anton Media Group and Blank Slate Media.

A big attraction is the HarborFest Craft Fair featuring over 70 quality craftspeople. Their booths will be located along lower Main Street, near the waterfront of Manhasset Bay, making it one of the most picturesque Craft Fairs on Long Island.

The HarborFest Craft Fair is sponsored by Precision Work, Inc. Another attraction along Main Street is Art In The Park, organized and sponsored

by The Art Guild and sponsored by Luria Design & Style. It features local artists displaying their work in Sunset Park, along the waterfront. They will have free Plein Air (outdoor) Painting instruction beginning at 1:30 p.m. and a free “Fun With Clay” Workshop for children from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. Art in The Park will have Button Making Fun for all ages throughout the day.

As soon as you enter the dock, look for the Chamber of Commerce booth near the entrance. They will be selling reusable shopping bags and tee shirts with a very special design that celebrates the 30th Annual HarborFest. The beautiful tote bags can be used for all your HarborFest purchases and future shopping, and the tee shirts can be worn all summer.

Everyone is excited that the luxury yacht, Elixir, will be at HarborFest for the first time. On Saturday, June 4, Elixir will depart the Town Dock for two 40-minute Sunset Cruises at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m.

During HarborFest Dock Day, on Sunday, June 5, Elixir will depart hourly from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Reservations for all cruises may be made online at LIBoatRentals. com/TryPortFirst. The cost for the cruises is $25 per person, all ages. Local historical information will be presented during the cruise as it passes sights of interest.

The Elixir cruises are sponsored by Long Island Boat Rental.

A highly anticipated event is the demonstration of the Port Washington Fire Department’s Fire Boat. It will be moored off the Town Dock for HarborFest and the demonstrations are sure to be exciting for all the festival goers.

ride on the picturesque Long Island Trolley, sponsored by the Greater Port Washington Business Improvement District (The BID.) The trolley will make a continuous loop from the train station to the festival area.

The large and popular HarborFest Family Fun Park is organized by The Parent Resource Center (PRC) and the Chamber of Commerce. Visit the PRC Fun Tent which always delights the children with lots of games and crafts. A highlight of the PRC activities will be a mini train—always a favorite! Oh My Goodness will have a special fun section for the littlest HarborFest visitors, and many Fun Park activities will be organized by other organizations and businesses to keep the kids happy all day!

The Fun Park also features free family entertainment all day on the Family Fun Stage. To start the day, The “Talented Kids of Port Washington” show will begin at 10:00 a.m. At 12:00 p.m. there will be a performance by the Olga Berest Dance Studio; Bach to Rock will take the stage at 12:30 p.m.; Voice Academy will perform at 2:00 p.m. The Family Fun Stage is sponsored by Anthony’s World of Floors, Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty, Douglas Elliman Real Estate, Flatiron Pediatrics, Healthy Kids Pediatrics, Hogan Law Office, Mathnasium, Orangetheory Fitness and Sheehan & Company CPA PC. As always, a main attraction will be HarborFest’s Fabulous Food Court. Port’s finest restaurants and organizations will present their specialties to feed the hungry crowds.

There will be tasty lunch selections from Ayhan’s Shish Kebab, Ivory Kitchen, LI Festival Catering, the Manhasset Bay Sportsmen’s Club, Margarita’s Café, Rosie’s Food Truck, Waterzooi, The Wild Goose, and Yummy Gyro. For sweet treats you will find delicious choices from Ralph’s Italian Ices in the Food Court and Mel’s Ice Cream truck in Sunset Park, by the Art in the Park exhibits. Come hungry—you can feast all day at HarborFest!

HarborFest will showcase free live entertainment in front of the “Pride of Cow Bay” Tugboat Museum at the entrance to the Dock. Martial arts will take center stage with a World Tae Kwon Do demonstration at 11:30 a.m. At 12:00 p.m., Porch Light will offer fabulous entertainment, followed at 1:00PM by the great group Hat Trixx. The talented cast of the Red Stocking Revue will perform several fabulous numbers from Port’s favorite variety show, beginning at 2:00 p.m.. Port’s popular singers, Lions of Winter, will take the mic at 3:00 p.m. The Grand Finale performance will feature Port’s own Harmony Sky. The HarborFest live entertainment is sponsored by BEB

Capital.

The mission of HarborFest is to promote environmental awareness and the HarborFest Committee offers free Enviro-Expo booths to organizations that promote the environment. There will be fascinating new hands-on demonstrations, special displays about Manhasset Bay and up-to-date information and products. Grassroots Environmental Education has organized a timely environmental education project about the dangers of plastics. They are introducing their new initiative, called PUPS (picking up plastic stuff ) in Port Washington. Look for their creative display in the EnviroExpo area. The Environmental Education program is sponsored by Fathoms Hotel & Marina, the Sands Point Preserve Conservancy and Total Dollar Insurance.

HarborFest’s very own Port Hole Pete will be at the helm of the “Pride of Cow Bay” Nautical Museum,” where a new exhibit, “Seasonal Sunsets of Manhasset Bay,” A Collection of Sunset Photos by Jeff Stone, will be unveiled. The exhibit was curated by Debbie Greco Cohen (Strategic Planning & Communications) and contains spectacular photos of the Port Washington famous sunsets.

The Art Guild Offers Workshops At Art In The Park

he 15th Annual Art in the Park, sponsored by The Art Guild and Luria Design & Style, will be held during HarborFest on Sunday, June 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Sunset Park, next to the Town Dock on lower Main Street.

There will be a free workshop for children, “Fun with Clay,” from 12:00–1:00 p.m. and beginning at 1:30 p.m. “Plein Air (Outdoor) Painting,” will offer participants of all ages the opportunity to paint on location at this waterfront park with the guidance of an instructor. Button making for all ages is a fun activity that will be available throughout the day.

PUPS Is Coming To Harborfest The HarborFest 2022 Environmental Education program, created every year by Port Washington-based non-profit Grassroots Environmental Education, will draw attention to the growing crisis of single-use plastic waste polluting every corner of our earth.

Using the name PUPS (Picking Up Plastic Stuff), kids will help clean up our town and keep plastic

from going into our surrounding waters. Remembering the original slogan of HarborFest celebrations, “Today’s the Day to Save The Bay,” fifth-grade students will engage in hands-on clean ups and social media campaigns, as well as creating an educational display. Adults involved with scouts, sports teams and school clubs, along with civic organizations, are encouraged to stop by the booth

and get information about starting a PUPS Program.

Kits with cotton “PUPS” gloves, bags and information sheets will be offered.

he fun begins early for the 30th annual HarborFest Dock Day on Sunday, June 5. At 10:00 a.m., the Chamber of Commerce and the Parent Resource Center will open the Family Fun Park on the Town Dock. There will be activities and entertainment all day, plus more fun at Art in the Park in Sunset Park.

The Parent Resource Center will have a mini train ride and exciting games, crafts and activities in the Fun Tent. Oh My Goodness will have a special fun section for the littlest HarborFest visitors, and many Fun Park activities will be organized by other organizations and businesses to keep the kids happy all day!

The Fun Park also features free family entertainment all day on the Family Fun Stage. To start the day, The “Talented Kids of Port Washington” show will begin at 10:00 a.m. At 12:00 p.m. there will a performance by the Olga Berest Dance Studio; Bach to Rock will take the stage at 12:30 p.m.; Voice Academy will perform at 2:00 p.m. The Family Fun Stage is sponsored

Fork Trolley, sponsored by the Greater Port Washington BID. The Trolley will serve as one of the shuttles to take people between the train station and the Town Dock.

For budding artists, Art In The Park will have a special free workshop for children called “Fun With Clay” beginning at 12 p.m. They will also have button making all day. Art In The Park is organized by The Art Guild and sponsored by The Art Guild and Luria Design & Style.

Kids and their families can take a 40-minute cruise around beautiful Manhasset Bay on the luxury yacht Elixir. Cruises leave hourly from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Elixir is sponsored by Long Island Boat Rentals.

Grassroots Environmental Education has organized a timely environmental education project for HarborFest about the problems created by plastics in our world.

There will be lots of learning opportunities for multiple age levels. Look for their green exhibit in the Enviro-Expo section.

fter a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual HarborFest is back to celebrate its 30th year. Presented by the Port Washington Chamber of Commerce and the town of North Hempstead, HarborFest is one of the most anticipated events in the community.

With spring and summer upon us, the community traditions that residents love are coming back. HarborFest 2022 will be featuring many of the events and performances we missed since the last HarborFest in 2019.

More than 70 vendors will have merchant or organization booths and exhibits set up for patrons to visit. The children’s fun park will feature games, crafts and sports activities.

Entertainment at the tugboat will feature the Red Stocking Revue performance, a Taekwondo demonstration, Hat Trixx and more. The family fun stage will feature performances from Ogla Berest Dance Studio, Bach to Rock and an environment expo to learn more about how we can do our part in helping the environment.

Enjoy water activities by kayaking, paddle boarding, or taking a sunset cruise aboard the Elixir. Get active with the PAL basketball and baseball contests.

The food court will be back with Port Washington’s local favorites such as Ayhan’s Shish Kebabs and The Wild Goose’s lobster rolls.

Visit the Town Dock and lower Main Street on Sunday, June 5 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., to get back into the community traditions we all love and missed!

P

ort Washington resident Jeff Stone has captured Port Washington’s spectacular and ever-changing sunsets on Manhasset Bay in more than 3,000 photos, over ten years, and during every season.

During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Stone shot four times more sunset photos than the previous five years combined. Residents anxiously awaited Stone’s nearly nightly posting of one gorgeous sunset photo after another.

Stone has amassed so many sunset photos that he recently had a book published entitled, Goodnight Port in which he shares his love of sunsets. It was difficult for him to cull down from the 3,000-plus sunset photos he has, but the book features over 170 sunset images that

highlight the natural beauty and serenity of Manhasset Bay. To showcase just a dozen of Jeff’s thousands of photos from his diverse portfolio, The Pride of Cow Bay Nautical Museum, which looks like a bright red tugboat located at the Town Dock, will present “Seasonal Sunsets of Manhasset Bay” by Jeff Stone.

The exhibit celebrates the year-round beauty of Port Washington’s waters and skyline.

Sponsored by Bayside Tax & Wealth, the exhibit will be unveiled on June 5 as part of the 30th HarborFest celebration.

Be sure to visit the exhibit while at HarborFest or afterwards. The exhibit will be on display until next year’s celebration, and is always “open” since the photos are viewed through the museum’s portholes and rear windows.

Matt Sarni faced an uncertain future.

The three-sport MacArthur High School athlete underwent Tommy John surgery heading into his junior year of high school. It would be easy for doubt to creep into the mind of a young athlete after such an extensive surgery.

But Sarni never doubted himself, he simply plotted his comeback. He focused on his recovery and dedicated himself to

“I was extremely determined to comeback because I feel the most like myself when I pitch,” Sarni said. “Being away from pitching for almost 600 days made me realize how much I love it. This drove me to work hard everyday toward a comeback.”

This year, Sarni was an impact player on MacArthur’s football, basketball and baseball teams. He also maintained a 100.76 weighted average in the class room.

“Matt is a high-quality person who has the respect of his teammates and the entire coaching staff,” MacArthur baseball coach Steve Costello said.

Sarni also made up his own rehab rules. To secure a spot on the football team, Sarni taught himself how to be a field goal kicker. When he was

finally able to throw a baseball again, and if no one was available to catch with him, he took a bucket of baseballs up to the MacArthur field and threw into a fence.

To work on his mechanics, he would stand in front of a mirror and replicate his wind-up.

On the gridiron, Sarni was automatic as a field goal kicker. He also made a game-saving tackle on a kick-off return by Mepham during a playoff game at Hofstra. In addition to football, Sarni was an All-Conference basketball player and was named Player of the Year by the Levittown Tribune.

But baseball has always been where Sarni has excelled most.

A member of the varsity team since his freshman year, Sarni did not pitch his junior season but contributed enough to the team as a second baseman to be named All Conference and help the Generals reach the Nassau County semifinals.

Sarni’s stat line as a senior is impressive. While playing shortstop, Matt is batting .377 with a .507 on-base percentage.

He has struck out just twice in 67 plate appearances. He has 16 RBIs and 25 runs scored while going a perfect 10-for-10 in stolen bases.

On the mound, the senior righthander is 4-1. In 28 innings pitched, he has a 2.00 ERA with 36 strikeouts and just four walks. He’s allowed one hit or fewer in five of his six starts. He has zero errors as a pitcher and shortstop.

But Sarni’s focus is always on the team.

“My current and former teammates have very high standards and expectations,” said Sarni, who will play baseball at New Paltz next year. “These coaches have helped me to become the person I am today both on and off the field.”

A competent defensive pair will often transmit highly valuable information to one another through the judicious use of signals. Such signals, properly interpreted, can sometimes spell the difference between the making and breaking of a contract.

Consider this deal where South’s one-spade opening was raised to four by North. East had no safe way to enter the bidding at this

point, and he passed. It was later discovered that East-West, who never bid, could have made a small slam in hearts or diamonds.

West led a diamond, won by East with the ace. East then cashed the ace of clubs, on which West played the ten, and was faced with the problem of how to put West on lead in order to get a club ruff.

Had West held the king of diamonds instead of the ace of hearts, he would have played the three of clubs on East’s ace instead.

Longtime Port Washington resident and St. Peter of Alcantara parishioner Frank Joseph Cipriano died peacefully on Tuesday, May 10, in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, age 97. He raised his family of four daughters, Laura, Jo Ann, Linda, and Patty, with his wife, Carmela, on Bar Beach Road. After serving in WWII with the U. S. Navy, Frank pursued aeronautics and subsequently joined the Grumman Corporation on Long Island, where his career spanned forty years. In 2014 Frank and Carmela moved to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. He is survived by his wife and daughters, eight grandchildren, and eleven great-grandchildren.

Edith Hesselbrock, a former Port Washington resident, passed away on April 23, 2022 in Sammamish, WA at age 99. Born in St. Paul, MN she graduated from Concordia College and the Eastman School of Music in Rochester. After marrying, she lived in Port Washington, raising her children and being active in scouts and the Music Study Club of Port Washington. In later years she lived in Washington state.

Edith is survived by two children Jim (Elaine) Hirschberg and Jan (Jeff) Hazelton as well as grandchildren Chris and Melanie Hirschberg and David and Kat Hazelton.

n Sunday, May 15, HEARTS PW hosted their annual PortFest at the track at Paul D. Schreiber High School. After a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the community event came back as strong as ever.

Hundreds of residents attended the afternoon event to enjoy live music, theater and dance performances. The Bach to Rock students sang and performed with various instruments. The public school musical ensembles played their instruments for the crowd, two dance studios in town put on beautiful and elegant performances, and the local ‘Curtains Up’ theater program performed a preview of their upcoming musical.

Food trucks serving delicious chicken tenders, artisan grilled cheese sandwiches and ice cream were set up for residents to enjoy. Local organizations had booths set up to spread information about their programs and ways to get involved in the community. The arts and crafts tent was a big hit for children to make their own lanterns, picture frames and more.

Families from across Port Washington enjoyed the beautiful weather and incredible performances throughout the afternoon thanks to HEARTS PW, the volunteers and the various sponsors.

HEARTS PW (Helping Enrich the Arts of Port Washington) is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to add meaningful value to children’s lives and our community by supporting, promoting and enriching the arts in Port Washington and its public schools.

Town Announces Reduced Fee Program For Income-Qualified Participants Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Town Council Member Mariann Dalimonte, and the Town Board are proud to once again offer a program that offers reduced fees to Manorhaven Beach Park and Whitney Pond Park pools for income-qualified participants. This initiative was first launched in 2021 and spearheaded

by Council Member Dalimonte in effort to make Town facilities accessible to all despite fiscal challenges local families may

Former Schreiber Lacrosse Player’s Legacy Lives On In Port

T

he memory of a young woman, Christina Saccone, who passed away in 2022, has inspired a lacrosse clinic and scholarship fund in her honor. Former Schreiber lacrosse coach, Raquel Piraino, said that after Saccone’s sudden passing, Saccone’s family and she were moved to honor her love for the game, and her big heart, by paying it forward to a future Port player.

Raquel Piraino, the current girls’ lacrosse head coach, Pam Giordano, worked with Port Washington PYA to offer the clinic to girls in their program, who ranged from first to sixth grade. Players from Schreiber’s varsity and junior varsity teams helped run stations at the clinic. All proceeds from the event will help fund the Christina Saccone Memorial Scholarship, a $1,000 scholarship to be given annually to a female graduating lacrosse player at Schreiber.

“Even though I did not have the pleasure of coaching Christina, I could not be more honored to host an event for her legacy.

Schreiber High School is a family and we come together in moments like this. We will host this event every year to keep her spirit on the field,” said coach Giordano.

Christina Saccone, who played goalie for the Lady Vikings (Schreiber—Class of 2004) wore the number double- zero on her jersey. All young players who attended the event were given a blue Port lacrosse shirt, with the name Saccone on the back, and the number “00”.

“When you’re looking out at the field and seeing Christina’s last name and jersey number on all these young girls running around and excited to play, it takes away some of the sadness from her passing.

She created so many lifelong memories and lasting friendships through lacrosse, and to see youth players carrying on her love for the game and wearing her number was very heartwarming. We look forward to continuing this event in the coming years in honor of our beloved Christina”.

SCHOOL NEWS BUDGET VOTE AND BOARD OF EDUCATION TRUSTEES ELECTION RESULTS On Tuesday, May 17, the Port Washington Union Free School District budget vote and Board of Education Trustees election took place. Visit portnet.org for more details on the 2022-2023 budget.

2022-2023 Budget: PASSED Yes-2,369 No-762 The proposed 2022-2023 school budget in the amount of $174,834,928 has passed.

This amount is a 4.52% increase over the current year’s budget. The proposed tax levy increase is 2.58%, which is below the tax cap limit.

The approved budget maintains our schools’ existing academic, extracurricular, support, performing arts, and athletic programs. The proposed budget reflects the district’s Vision, Mission and Portrait of a Graduate by educating the whole child and providing a well-rounded, equitable educational experience for all.

Proposition 2: PASSED Yes-2,150 No-573 Proposition 2 establishes a capital reserve fund for a facilities improvement program. Reserve funds are separate

accounts set up to finance various district expenses and can be described as a savings account for a specific purpose. They enable a school district to put away money over time in order to finance expenses later, without having to borrow money.

The establishment of reserve funds gives the district an avenue to responsibly save money for projects that are anticipated to be required in the future.

The district is proposing the creation of the following capital reserve fund: Facilities Improvement Program I-to finance the cost of districtwide

replacements, renovations, upgrades, reconstruction, additions, and remediation of electrical service, HVAC units, air handling, unit ventilators, furnishings and equipment incidental to said projects.

Friends Of The Library Hosts Their 53rd Book & Author Luncheon

Friends of the Port Washington Public Library held their first luncheon in three years

riends of The Port Washington Public Libray (FOL) was able to host the annual Richard D. Whittemore Book and Author Luncheon for the first time in three years. The Book and Author Luncheon featured authors Lidia Bastianich and Susan Isaacs.

Founded in 1966, the FOL is the library’s longest-serving volunteer organization. In addition to hosting the luncheon, the FOL assists with library programs, supports the library staff, advocates for the library budget, fundraises for all library departments and much more.

Amy Bass, President of the FOL, welcomed guests to the luncheon at the Clubhouse at Harbor Links and introduced the new format of the author and book luncheon.

Instead of presenting an author lecture, the FOL decided to present an author’s conversation where attendees were able to listen in and enjoy the flowing, lively and informational discussion.

Best-selling novelist Issacs acted as the program moderator. Issacs asked Bastianich questions about her career and memoir, titled My American Dream: A Life of Love, Family, and Food.

Issacs has lived in Port Washington for half a century now and has published 14 novels. In addition to novels, Issacs has written two screenplays and worked as a magazine editor and freelance political speechwriter.

As a chef, Emmy-awardwinning TV host, best-selling cookbook author, and memoirist, Bastianich is known for many things. Alongside her husband, Bastianich has become a successful restaurateur, and now her two children also partake in the family

business. Bastianich has released numerous cookbooks, the most recent being Lidia’s a Pot, a Pan, and a Bowl, a companion book to her new 26-part public television series, Lidia’s Kitchen: Home Cooking.

During dessert at the FOL luncheon, Issacs and Bastianich took the stage to converse about Bastianich’s moving memoir released in 2018. My American Dream: A Life of Love, Family, and Food details Bastianich’s early life growing up in Pula, on the Istrian Peninsula, and what led to her moving to America and becoming a self-made success story.

The luncheon attendees were able to ‘eavesdrop’ on the conversation between Issacs and Bastianich. Living in Pula, Bastianich learned about growing foods and cooking Italian meals from her grandmother, Nonna Rosa.

“History propelled my whole life,” said Bastianich when discussing her time living with her Nonna Rosa. Bastianich grew up during the birth of communism in Europe, causing political turmoil throughout the region, leading to her and her brother being sent to live with Nonna Rosa.

Nonna Rosa had chickens, ducks, rabbits and many animals that Bastianich helped tend to.

As a child, she was often sent to her garden to acquire ingredients for her Nonna, which taught her a lot about the different smells, textures and tastes of these native ingredients.

“When you live with nature, you can anticipate it with your senses,” said Bastianich. Growing up around the garden and farm fostered a deep connection to the source of food and helped flourish the love for cooking that Bastianich fell into in New York.

When a communist regime annexed Istria, Bastianich’s immediate family fled to Trieste, where they spent two years in a refugee camp waiting for visas to enter the

Bastianich’s family was able to settle down in America and were incredibly grateful to the various charities that assisted them along the way. She shared that her mother even tried to pay back the charities when they had the money, but they didn’t accept the money.

Bastianich began working in restaurants as a waitress at the young age of 14, but somehow she always ended up back in the kitchen. After attending Hunter College, she met her husband, and they teamed up to create their restaurants.

Famous chef Julia Child visited Bastianich’s restaurant in Manhattan, Felidia, only a few months after it opened in 1981.

Child sampled many dishes that night, but Bastianich’s wild mushroom risotto stood out to her. Some time later, Child visited Bastianich’s home and learned to make the risotto. Child asked Bastianich to appear as a guest chef on her PBS series, Master Chefs, to make the mushroom

risotto. The episode helped Bastianich get into the media world and lead her to launch her own television series.

“There is no other place in the world where I could’ve done what I did with the opportunities I was given besides America,” said Bastianich.

Although Bastianich was never able to say goodbye to her grandmother before she left Istria, the smell and tastes of the food she made connected her to her grandmother and allowed her memory to live on.

“Family was our strength and roots since the beginning,” said Bastianich. “The strength from family transported.”

After discussing the memoir, Issacs and Bastianich dove into her new cook book, Lidia’s a Pot, a Pan, and a Bowl. The cookbook recipes are simple, straightforward one pot or one pan type of recipes.

It took two years to research and compile for the cookbook which coincides with two seasons of Bastianich’s show.

“I am a conduit of my native culture, Italian,” said Bastianich.

“And I bring it to my adoptive culture.”

After the intriguing conversation that had attendees entranced, the FOL held a question and answer segment with Bastianich where she further explored details of her career. Bastianichsigned copies of her books for attendees at the luncheon, which was unplanned but turned out to be a wonderful surprise.

“We did not expect Lidia to sign books,” said Bass. “We had book plates that she had signed in advance, but she was so gracious and obviously enjoying herself that she kept signing and signing.”

Bass concluded the luncheon by thanking all the members and volunteers of the FOL, the PWPL staff, donors and supporters, including all the luncheon attendees. Although this was the first luncheon event in thre years, the FOL ran the entire program smoothly and are looking forward to next year’s event.
