A New Twist On An East End Tradition

P

ort Washington joins the collection of Long Island communities to partner with Long Island Winterfest (LIWF).

This year looks a little bit different with a mix of in-person and virtual events, including virtual art shows, live stream music and family friendly outdoor activities. Visitors are invited to ‘live like a local’ and experience each town’s unique places. Port Washington features guided walks, virtual art classes and galleries, cooking classes, dining, with more events added each week through March 21.

LIWF’s event calendar will be updated daily as new information arrives.

“Vincent’s battle was like too many others,” Richmond said. “In his honor and for those still facing barriers I advocate for change. No one should every have to fight so hard for the basic rights to healthcare. When I advocate, I am not looking for sympathy and I’m not looking for sympathy or words from our representatives, as words can’t bring back my son or help those families who are in crisis right now.”

Richmond hopes that by sharing her son’s story she will be able to raise awareness about the need for increased funding for the prevention, treatment, services and the basic right to healthcare.

The website will feature local businesses who are creating special events or discounts for Winterfest visitors. The focus will be a resource for where to go, what to do and what is open, including plenty of outdoor experiences for all ages.

Preston, who brings more than 13 years of experience in senior level development roles, will oversee the organization’s development, public relations, event management and community outreach

News Town Officials Thank Dejana Foundation For Funding COVID-19 Testing Site

N

orth Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth, councilmember Mariann Dalimonte and the town board recently thanked the Peter and Jeri Dejana Foundation for their generous donation in funding a COVID-19 testing site at the Port Washington Adult Activities Center.

Dalimonte along with Town Clerk Wayne Wink presented a proclamation of recognition to Peter Dejana, president of the Peter and Jeri Dejana Foundation to thank them for a $1 million grant to sponsor the free COVID-19 testing site.

“One of the best ways we can assist North Hempstead residents during the COVID-19 pandemic is by ensuring they have access to nearby testing facilities,” Bosworth said. “We are extremely appreciative of Northwell and the Dejana Foundation for partnering together to offer this free service to our residents.”

testing location served as a vital community resource and we are thankful to them for recognizing this need and helping our local residents.”

The free COVID-19 testing site has

been operational since early January.

The town made available its center, and Northwell Health provided the clinical guidance and staffing it required to accommodate as many

residents as possible.

“Our foundation is here to help support the community’s needs, especially during this pandemic. I am pleased to know that this initiative has benefited thousands of people.

Being able to offer residents a safe and reliable PCR testing facility was our goal, and we achieved it with Northwell at our side,” Peter Dejana said.

The Peter and Jeri Dejana Foundation has been a generous donor to local and regional nonprofit organizations since 2012. The town recognized the Dejana Foundation for their commitment in supporting a diverse list of community-based groups, who in turn provide programs and services to a broad range of residents within the town.

Peter Dejana accepted the town’s proclamation and said, “Thank you for this honor. This is what we do, we help people. And, we all did this together.”

AGATE Hosts Discussion On The News Purpose And Importance Of Gifted Education

GATE of Port Washington recently hosted its annual guest speaker. This year’s speaker was Dr. Elissa Brown, director of the Hunter College Center for Gifted Studies, who addressed “The Purpose and Importance of Gifted Education” for an audience that included local parents, Board of Education members, educators and administrators. The discussion was moderated by AGATE co-presidents Nanette Melkonian and Kim Keiserman, while AGATE board member Analia Quispe provided Spanish language interpretation through a free conference line.

Brown devoted much of the presentation to challenging assumptions and stereotypes about giftedness and exploring what the scholarly research reveals about the personality and intellectual characteristics of gifted learners. In particular, she emphasized personality characteristics such as introversion, a keen sense of justice and a propensity to question authority, and intellectual characteristics such as a rapid learning rate, divergent thinking and a need for precision, logic and

Twenty-five states have mandates to either identify or serve gifted students while ten have mandates to do both but no funding, and eight have no mandates or funding. New York is one of the eight, and as a result, gifted education varies widely from district to district: Only 17.4 percent of New York State’s school districts report offering some form of gifted programming and only 1.7 percent of New York’s students are identified and enrolled in gifted programs, compared to 6.7 percent of students nationally.

Brown pointed out the irony of New York’s position because New York State law, section 4452, defines gifted pupils in terms that emphasize the necessity of specialized educational programs or services, stating that “the term ‘gifted pupils’ shall mean those pupils who show evidence of high performance capability and exceptional potential

She stressed the importance of teacher training in recognizing these characteristics and responding to the behaviors and special needs that arise from them, noting that just because children are gifted doesn’t mean that they are exceptionally mature, able to excel in every area, able to work independently, able to cope with multiple stressors or able to make long-term goals.

Brown provided an overview of the national landscape on gifted education, pointing out that there is no federal definition of giftedness, no federal mandate to meet the needs of gifted children and no federal funding for gifted programs. In the absence

Comer And Keller Seek Election To Library Board

wo incumbents, Nancy Comer and William Keller, announced that they will both be running for re-election to the Port Washington Public Library Board (PWPL). The election, for a five-year term, will be held on Tuesday, April 13.

Comer has served on the Board since 2011, Keller since 2016.

During their current term, major renovations have been completed or begun including: the opening of the renovated and expanded children’s room; a new adult learning center; renovations of the lavatories; and the design and initial construction of a Maker Space. The library has also expanded its community outreach program and has increased its English as a second language offerings. In the past year, the library has aggressively responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by offering virtual programming and substantially increasing the availability of audio, e-books and digital databases. The library also successfully

Director James Hutter. All of this was accomplished with balanced budgets and little or no tax increases in each of the past five years.

Over the next year, the PWPL will be continuing a major facilities preventive maintenance program that will refurbish the building’s façade and sections of the roof. The library

is also in the midst of a five-year strategic planning exercise. Plans are being made to adapt to the postCOVID needs of the Port Washington community through a combination of in-person and virtual events and services.

Adult Coloring Program At The Port Library “Keep calm and color on,” states the welcome message on the website for the Adult Coloring Program at the Port Washington Public Library (PWPL). An innovative new effort to combat loneliness, boredom, and isolation in the pandemic, the library is encouraging adults from all walks of life to sign up to be paired with a PWPL staff buddy and “color your cares away” with a collaborative art project.

Participants are given the option for home delivery or curbside pick-up and receive a half-completed coloring page which typically includes a personalized note from the staff member who completed the other half of the work.

Rachel Fox, Director of Children’s Services, who came up with the idea and had previously run the in-house coloring program pre-pandemic states, “It is a way of being together yet apart.

One day we hope that our patrons and our staff who are participating will be able to meet each other and perhaps even host an exhibit in the community gallery.”

During the sign-up process, patrons may select their preferred coloring page image (animals, geometric/ mandala, nature, words/quotes or

surprise) and level of difficulty (easy/ medium, challenging) as well as opt for a complimentary new pack of colored pencils.

Though the program is tentatively scheduled to run through April, Fox hints it may be extended depending on the response rate from the community.

Planning For The Future Garbarino has hand in proposed bipartisan small business succession legislation

A

ccording to a survey conducted by the Federal Reserve Bank, three out of every 10 small businesses in the U.S. say they likely won’t survive 2021 without additional government assistance during the pandemic. And while the amount of COVID-19 relief for the roughly 30 million small businesses in the United States is being debated in Congress along the usual ideological lines, four members of the House are making an effort to pass bipartisan legislation that would provide small business owners the support needed to create a business succession plan. The quartet is comprised of Republicans Andrew Garbarino (NY-02) and Tom Rice (SC07) and Democratic Representatives Cheri Bustos (IL-17) and Jason Crow (CO-06). According to Rice, of the nation’s 30 million small businesses, less than 42 percent have succession plans. Bustos added that almost half of small business owners over the age of 55 have no plan of succession, which she pointed out, is an alarming statistic, as small businesses employ roughly 25 million Americans.

For Garbarino and Crow, who both come from families with small business backgrounds (both are attorneys from small law firms), this kind of legislation is crucial, given what small businesses represent to the communities they serve.

“Small business is the backbone of our economy,” Garbarino said. “My district alone consists of 80 percent of my constituents working for a small business. I have downtowns all over my district—restaurants, stores—so many employees. As an assemblyman and a private practice attorney, one thing I saw with government is that they usually don’t help small businesses.

They usually get in the way, whether it’s through more regulation or more red tape. That’s why I was so excited to jump on this bill. This actually helps small business.”

Bustos echoed the overarching negative effect that ripples through a community when a small business shuts down, as evidenced by the closing of a dry cleaner in the small Illinois town of Aledo.

“A small business closing can have a significant impact on the larger town or city where the business is located,” Bustos said. “Small businesses drive local economies and offer employment opportunities and services to other

With no succession plan in place for that Aledo business, residents now have to drive many miles for dry cleaning.”

Crow also emphasized the importance of the succession legislation for first-generation immigrant businesses, which make up a considerable chunk of his district.

“Nearly one in five of my constituents was born outside of the country,” Crow said. “Now these immigrants and refugees are extremely entrepreneurial. We have thousands of businesses in my community started by these folks. But there are also unique challenges faced by under-served communities in first-generation businesses in that succession—ensuring the passing of those businesses onto family and keeping that wealth they have worked so hard to build in their families and within our communities.

But too many small businesses do not have a plan for succession, resulting in business closures or forced sales.

Small business owners work hard and often spend their lives building their businesses. This bill is going to go a

long way toward making that easier.”

Modest in size, the Small Business Succession Act enables the Small Business Administration (SBA) to set up workshops and provide guidance for small businesses to learn how to set up a succession plan. A pair of one-time $250 tax credits, one for creating a plan and one for executing it, are included to encourage small business owners to go forward and ensure their companies don’t fall to the wayside due to improper planning.

It’s a scenario Rice saw happen before serving in Congress.

“As a tax lawyer and CPA, I dealt with this a lot in my prior life,” Rice explained. “I have absolutely seen the need and the primary concern for owners to make sure to keep their business running and that their employees and customers are taken care of. Maybe they don’t always have the tools that they need or the foresight to deal with succession plans. Anything we can do to encourage that just helps the economy.”

The event, a fundraiser for Friends of Gaitley, the councilman’s campaign committee, began with “Happy Birthday” sung by many friends from the community and included shout-outs and performances from family and friends in Glen Cove and from as far away as Texas, North Carolina and Scotland.

Among the more than 60 people who submitted video well-wishes included many well-known leaders from the community including Brian Basile, Claudette Bryan, Jeanine Dimenna, Edward Norris, Deborah Orgel-Gordon and Carol Waldman, to name a few.

When asked about the celebration, the councilman shared, “I was touched by everyone’s hard work and creativity in putting the fundraiser together and moved by the many sentiments shared.”

Organizers will be posting video highlights of the event to the councilman’s Facebook campaign page later in the week.

New Youth Dek Hockey League For Spring 2021 The Town of Oyster Bay will launch a new Youth Dek Hockey League open to boys and girls aged 6-12, beginning on April 5. Dek hockey is a variation of traditional ice hockey, where the games are played sans skates on the ‘dek’ of an ice rink after the ice has melted away for the season. The season will feature 10 games, weekly practices, and an end-of-season playoff competition.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR KNOW THE TRUE FACTS BEFORE YOU VOTE Petitions are in and village elections are set for March 16. In New Hyde Park the positions for mayor, village justice and two trustees are up for grab.

This year, it’s exciting to see a few new parties established—The Unity Party, The Beautification Party and the Common Sense Party. I wish all the candidates the best. I am personally committed to help with a smooth transition and look forward to working with all the reelected and newly elected board members.

What I do find disturbing during this election season is the negativity, false statements and accusations put out on social media about the current mayor and some of the board members that I sit with. I get that not everyone may agree on decisions, codes, etc., but to demonize members that have dedicated countless years and hours to serve their community is wrong and disrespectful.

Despite what you may read on social media, every member that currently sits on the board has one primary purpose—to selflessly serve the community and make New Hyde Park a great place to live. No hidden agendas; no political aspirations; no personal gain.

Niche.com confirms that we have achieved just that and lists New Hyde Park as a great place to live. It gives New Hyde Park an A+ rating with the median home price

up by 4 percent since 2019, completely contradictory to comments on other social media platforms.

Granted, is there room for improvement? Always.

Have mistakes been made?

Yes. But when there were mistakes, corrective actions were taken. An example of this is the previously created Development Incentive Bonus Overlay District. Following the legal proceedings of the hearing, the board listened to the residents. The project was stopped, we took a step back, scrapped that development, took the community input and now will be stepping out to develop an overall master plan with intense input.

What our voting residents need to understand are the real facts and accomplishments that have been achieved the past few years.

These include: • Successful acquisition of a $75,000 grant for an emergency generator for the village hall • An excellent financial state rating on an external audit, with a surplus of $300,000 for fiscal year ending May 31, 2020. The best since 2011 • A financial cash reserve built up to $2,426,573 that will now help the village remain financially sound despite the COVID-19 shutdown • Awarded Tree City USA for three consecutive years based on the village’s Beautification and Tree Planting Landscaping program • Reconstruction of South

Will You Still Need Me, Will You Still Feed Me? As you age, birthdays ending in “5” or “0” are considered milestones. Of course, most of us likely over-celebrated 18 or 21 when becoming legal drinking age.

Many women continue to celebrate 29 long into their 40’s. Milestone celebrations are expected for 30, 40 and 50.

When your 60th rolls around, others want to celebrate more than you do.

Your friends and family have one of two reactions when they learn you are turning 60. Either they are surprised you got there so quickly or they are only happy it’s not them. Naturally, those of us that are already 60 are ecstatic to welcome more members into our club.

Many feel that after you turn 60, the next milestone is the magical retirement age of 65. That was true for our parents, but Baby Boomers know better. Our next milestone is 64, thanks to The Beatles.

My generation has been singing along to “When I’m

Spring has sprung at NSHAHS, and we can’t wait to celebrate. I wish everyone a wonderful spring, a happy Purim and good luck as we complete the school year.

nergy efficient windows are an important consideration for both new and existing homes.

Heat gain and heat loss through windows are responsible for 25 to 30 percent of residential heating and cooling energy use.

If you are selecting windows for new construction or to replace existing windows, it’s important to choose the most efficient windows you can afford that work best in your climate.

If your existing windows are in good condition, taking steps to reduce the energy loss through windows can make your home more comfortable and save you money on energy bills.

You have two broad options if you hope to reduce the amount of energy lost through your windows and improve the comfort of your home: 1. Update your existing windows to improve efficiency 2. Replace your windows.

Update Existing Windows to Improve Efficiency

If your windows are in good condition, taking steps to improve their efficiency may be the most cost-effective option to increase the comfort of your home and save money on energy costs. There are several things you can do to improve the efficiency of your existing windows: • Check existing windows for air leaks • Caulk and weatherstrip. Check out our do-it-yourself project to learn how to weatherstrip double-hung windows.

• Add window treatments and coverings. Learn more about your window treatment options.

• Add storm windows or panels

• Add solar control film • Add exterior shading, such as awnings, exterior blinds or overhangs.

With any efficiency improvements, take steps to ensure proper installation and check for air leaks again after making the improvement.

Replace Your Windows

If you decide to replace your windows, you will have to make several decisions about the type of windows you purchase and the type of replacement you will make.

You may have the option of replacing the windows in their existing frame; discuss this option with your window retailer and installer to find out if it will work for you.

You will also need to decide what features you want in your windows.

You will need to decide on the following: • Frame types • Glazing type • Gas fills and spacers • Operation types Selection Process In addition to choosing the window type, you also need to consider design, energy use and labeling, warranties, and proper installation.

First look for the ENERGY STAR label when buying new windows.

Then review ratings on the energy performance label from the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) to find the most efficient windows for your needs.

NFRC ratings are included on all ENERGY STAR certified windows and provide a reliable way to determine a window’s energy properties and compare products. Learn about energy performance ratings for windows to

understand how to read the labels and energy-use information.

Window Selection Tips • Look for the ENERGY STAR and NFRC labels.

• In colder climates, consider selecting gas-filled windows with low-e coatings to reduce heat loss.

In warmer climates, select windows with coatings to reduce heat gain.

• Choose a low U-factor for better thermal resistance in colder climates; the U-factor is the rate at which a window conducts non-solar heat flow.

• Look for a low solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC). SHGC is a measure of solar radiation admitted through a window. Low SHGCs reduce heat gain in warm climates.

• Select windows with both low U-factors and low SHGCs to maximize energy savings in temperate climates with both cold and hot seasons.

• Look for whole-unit U-factors and

SHGCs, rather than center-of-glass U-factors and SHGCs. Whole-unit numbers more accurately reflect the energy performance of the entire product.

Installation Even the most energy-efficient window must be properly installed to ensure energy efficiency and comfort.

Have your windows installed by trained professionals according to manufacturer’s instructions; otherwise, your warranty may be void.

Window installation varies depending on the type of window, the construction of the house (wood, masonry, etc.), the exterior cladding (wood siding, stucco, brick, etc.), and the type (if any) of weather-restrictive barrier.

Windows, flashing, and air sealing should all be installed according to the manufacturer’s recommendations to perform correctly.

an appliance is energy efficient, the federal government requires most appliances to display the bright yellow and black EnergyGuide label.

Although these labels will not show you which appliance is the most efficient on the market, they will show you the annual energy consumption and operating cost for each appliance so you can compare them yourself.

How to Read the EnergyGuide Label The EnergyGuide label is required to be placed on all appliances by the manufacturers. The label provides information about energy consumption, and shows you how much energy an appliance uses compared with similar models. Keep in mind that the numbers are averages: actual costs will differ somewhat depending on how you use them.

Nassau County teens Lea Feiner of Levittown, Amritha Jacob of Bellmore and Julia Kirpalani of Merrick made history on February 15 as they become three of the nation’s first female Eagle Scouts—a prestigious achievement attained by some of the country’s most noteworthy figures. Feiner, Jacob and Kirpalani are among hundreds of young women who will make up the Inaugural Class of female Eagle Scouts nationwide.

Young women have been part of Scouting for decades in co-ed programs offered by the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), including Sea, Venturing, Exploring and STEM Scouts. The BSA expanded that legacy further in recent years by welcoming girls into Cub Scouts and then into Scouts BSA last February. Scouts BSA is the program for youth ages 11 to 17 previously known as Boy Scouts. Since then, tens of thousands of young women throughout state of New York and across the country have joined the organization’s most iconic program with many—including Feiner, Jacob and Kirpalani—working their way toward the rank of Eagle Scout.

Eagle Scout is the program’s highest rank, which only about 6 percent of Scouts achieve on average. To earn it, individuals have to take on leadership roles within their troop and their community; earn a minimum of 21 merit badges that cover a broad range of topics including first aid and safety, civics, business and the environment; and they must research, organize and complete a large community service project.

Feiner’s Eagle Project benefited the Wantagh Animal Shelter in Wantagh.

The ambitious teen constructed perches for cats using shelving and tires to create a dynamic environment for the felines at the facility. She is currently attending Nassau Community College, where she is working toward an Associate Degree in Education. Feiner plans on continuing her studies at Queens College. In addition to gaining skills that last a lifetime, individuals who earn the esteemed Eagle Scout rank can reference it for academic, vocational, and military recognition, including scholarships and advanced enlistment grade.

BS’ new crime drama Clarice is a deep dive into the untold personal story of FBI agent Clarice Starling as she returns to the field in 1993, just one year after the events that took place during the film The Silence of the Lambs. Clarice’s bravery gives her an inner light that draws monsters and madmen to her, and her complex psychological makeup that comes from a challenging childhood empowers her to begin to find her voice while working in a man’s world.

With a brand new show and backstory of Starling also comes new characters such as FBI agent Tomas Esquivel, who is portrayed by actor and native New Yorker Lucca De Oliveira.

“He knows what he’s good at and he knows what he’s not good at,” De Oliveira said about his character. “He knows when to speak and when not to. I think he is a man of integrity and respect, and he knows how the world works and he knows who he is and how he has to move in this world to get further and continue to serve the purpose that he serves. I think he also has this tremendous skill set that he doesn’t entirely feel proud of. He finally found a place where he can finally be put to the test and be used.

He’s almost like a loyal dog— he loves to take direction and get the job done, but at the same time he has these strong morals. He has this real good head on his shoulders and he knows how to speak to his superiors, and how to contain his anger and his potential rage.”

And as the show progresses throughout its first season, viewers will get to know more about Esquivel as well as the other agents.

When your car rolled off the manufacturer’s assembly line, it came preset with special angles that position your tires correctly. And for good reason. In order for your vehicle to travel the way it’s supposed to, it will need precise alignment.

“The wheel alignment consists of adjusting the position of each individual wheel in relationship to the centerline of the vehicle,” said Wilson.

“There are specific angles that need to be checked and adjusted in order for it to be within the manufacturer’s specs.”

Misalignment can lead to uneven tire wear, poor handling and shorter tire life.

Tires are expensive. Keeping them aligned isn’t.

“If you purchase a set of tires, then it’s highly desirable that you have the wheels aligned because it’ll ensure a longer tire life and proper vehicle handling,” Wilson added.

Your senses (and even the good old personal hunch) are good human capital for spotting poor alignment.

A Legacy That Still Rides Proudly

lthough Joseph Williams Jr.—the transportation specialist for the Farmingdale School District—passed away in February 2019, the legacy he left behind can still be felt today. In recognition of his incomparable role as a member of the Farmingdale School District, Williams has been posthumously inducted into the New York Association for Pupil Transportation’s (NYAPT) Hall of Fame. Each year, NYAPT selects one individual who upholds its mission of supporting, developing and representing professionals who are responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of school children for this honor. Williams’ exemplary track record embodies all that an honoree must possess.

In May 2000, he began his

tenure at the district and stepped into his role of providing safe transportation for thousands of students to and from school every day. It was a role he met with a sense of great responsibility and determination.

“Joe Williams was so much more than the district’s transportation supervisor,” Superintendent Paul Defendini said. “He was a highly skilled professional in the field of student transportation, he was a mentor to many of us who worked in central administration, he was a kindhearted friend to all that knew him and he was a committed and tireless member of our family. Although his legacy is intact, we miss him and the genuine kindness that he showed for everyone that was lucky enough to pass him in the halls.”

In addition to sealing air leaks, caulking can also prevent water damage inside and outside of the home when applied around faucets, drains, bathtubs and other plumbing fixtures.

Applying Caulk • For good adhesion, clean all areas to be caulked.

Remove any old caulk and paint, using a putty knife, large screwdriver, stiff brush or special solvent. Make sure the area is dry so you don’t seal in moisture.

• Apply caulk to all joints in a window frame and the joint between the frame and the wall.

• Hold the gun at a consistent angle. Forty-five degrees is best for getting deep into the crack. You know you’ve got the right angle when the caulk is immediately forced into the crack as it comes out of the tube.

• Caulk in one straight continuous stream, if possible.

Avoid stops and starts.

• Send caulk to the bottom of an opening to avoid bubbles.

• Make sure the caulk sticks to both sides of a crack or seam.

• Release the trigger before pulling the gun away to avoid applying too much caulking compound. A caulking gun with an automatic release makes this much easier.

• If caulk oozes out of a crack, use a putty knife to push it back in.

• Don’t skimp. If the caulk shrinks, reapply it to form a smooth bead that will seal the crack completely.

The best time to apply caulk is during dry weather when the outdoor temperature is above 45 degrees F. Low humidity is important during application to prevent cracks from swelling with moisture. Warm temperatures are also necessary so the caulk will set properly and adhere to the surfaces.

The Sixth Squad reports the arrest of a Great Neck man for an assault that

occurred on Feb. 17 at 10:10 p.m. in Glen Head.

According to detectives, Sixth Precinct officers responded to a disturbance call at a residence on Todd Drive. Upon arrival officers observed 30-year-old defendant Michael Molina banging on the front door and screaming obscenities. The defendant ignored multiple verbal commands to step away from the door and kept screaming. As the officers attempted to place the defendant into custody, he began to flail his arms and refused to be handcuffed. After a brief struggle, he was placed into custody.

As officers were placing the defendant in the rear seat of their police vehicle, the defendant intentionally kicked an officer on his right side causing substantial pain to the officer’s arm and shoulder. The officer was transported to an area hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Molina has been charged with second-degree assault, resisting arrest, obstructing governmental administration and disorderly conduct. He was arraigned on Feb. 18 in Mineola.

According to detectives, after returning home from grocery shopping, a 72-year-old female victim was approached by a male black subject who asked her if she needed help bringing her packages into her Westbury Lane home. After telling the subject that she didn’t need any help, he then followed her into her home and asked for some water. The victim, out of fear, complied and brought the subject a bottle of water. The subject, after asking for some money, then forcibly took the victim’s purse and fled the home. He was then observed getting on a blue bicycle and fleeing the scene on Westbury Avenue.

The uninjured victim further described the subject as being a light-skinned black male in his early 30s. He was wearing blue jeans, a dark-colored jacket and a winter hat with a pom-pom on top.

arrest of an East Meadow man for an incident that occurred on Feb. 19 at 10:50 p.m. in East Meadow.

According to detectives, while staying in room 82 with others at the Coliseum Motor Inn located at 1650 Hempstead Tpke., 29-year-old Jose Gonzalez became involved in a verbal dispute with another male. During the dispute, a 44-year-old male intervened and attempted to stop the fight.

Gonzalez then withdrew a knife and stabbed the victim in the chest, causing him to suffer a non-life-threatening laceration. The victim then fled the room and went to the lobby where 911 was called.

Upon police arrival, Gonzalez was located and placed under arrest without further incident. The victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Gonzalez is charged with second-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He was arraigned in Mineola on Feb. 20.

Grand Larceny Arrest In Plainview

According to Robbery Squad detectives, an employee of John’s Farm located at 601 Old Country Rd. noticed a discrepancy in cash received and the daily cash receipts totals.

The employee reviewed company records and became aware of voided transactions being entered by a female employee who was an assistant manager. It was also discovered that the same employee was removing cash while counting daily deposits.

On Feb. 22, the subject was observed preforming fraudulent voids and later removed $1,400.

Police were notified and 20-year-old Maria Pineda was arrested. It was determined that the total loss dating back to January 2020 was in excess of $300,000.

Pineda is charged with second, third and fourth-degree grand larceny, and two counts of first-degree falsifying business records. She was arraigned on Feb. 22 in Mineola.

Seaford Man Arrested For Criminal Mischief

responded to a 911 call for a disturbance. A male had a verbal dispute with two other occupants in the residence. The male broke the glass in the front door causing lacerations to his arms and debris on his body.

The arriving officer encountered the subject who had a large piece of glass in his hand. The officer gave commands for the subject to drop the glass and he complied. The officer went to place the subject under arrest when he began to flail his arms and resist. The officer subdued the subject and 20-year-old Joseph Vicale of Seaford was placed arrest.

During the struggle, the officer’s eyes came in contact with small fragments of glass on the subject’s body and suffered irritated eyes and blurred vision.

The officer was transported to an area hospital for treatment and released.

Vicale is charged with third-degree criminal mischief, second-degree assault, two counts of third-degree menacing, second-degree harassment, resisting arrest and second-degree obstructing governmental administration. He was arraigned on Feb. 22 in Mineola.

East Meadow Man Arrested For Farmingdale Burglary Eighth Squad Detectives report the arrest of an East Meadow man for a burglary that occurred on Feb. 24 at 3 p.m. in Farmingdale.

According to detectives, the male victim returned to his Hemlock Drive residence with his daughter after picking her up from the school bus stop and found an unknown male inside. The victim called 911 immediately and responding Eighth Precinct officers placed the subject into custody without further incident.

A thorough investigation was conducted and the subject, Nicholas Fileccia, 38, was determined to be responsible for the following incidents that occurred on the same date: Lawrence Street, Farmingdale —Burglary (Occupied Dwelling), North Wyoming Avenue, North Massapequa—Burglary (Occupied Dwelling).

Fileccia is being charged with three counts of second-degree burglary and three counts of possession of burglary tools. He was arraigned on Feb. 25 in Mineola.

December 3, 1923 - February 13, 2021. Vincent (Jimmy) DeJoseph, 97, of New Hyde Park, NY passed away on Saturday, February 13, 2021 due to Covid-19.

He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Gilda, and his four children, Gloria (Tony), Joan (Steve), Rosanne (Joe) and Vincent (Donna). Proud papa to Cristina, Claudia, Adriana, Diana, Stephen, Joseph, Daniel, Julia, Vincent and Thomas and 8 great grandchildren, Calina, Riley, Sean, Ellen, Fritz, Vincent, Michael and Luca. Also survived by nieces and nephews. Vincent, the son of Giuseppe and Filomena De Giuseppe, was born in Selva, in the province Chieti, Abruzzo, Italy and immigrated to the United States in June of 1930 with his mother and siblings to join his father who worked in construction in New York City. He worked from the age of 12 to help the family and graduated from Long Island City High School in 1942. He worked in construction with his father until he was drafted into the Army in December of 1942. He honorably served in the US Army Air Corps until 1946. He became a bread route salesman for S.B. Thomas for 35 years, retiring in 1986. He met his wife Gilda Carnevale in 1950. She had come to America from Altino, a town near Selva, earlier that year and they had mutual friends. They raised their family in Astoria, New York. He later attended Queensborough Community College and earned a license to teach driving in New York and taught driving in the evenings to support his family. He and Gilda moved to New Hyde Park in 1986. You know what people mean when they speak of the greatest generation by the example of how Vincent lived his life.

Family meant the world to him. He loved taking his grandchildren on road trips and cruises after he retired. They visited Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Niagara Falls, West Point, and Mystic, Connecticut. He was known for his big heart, selflessness, integrity and work ethic. A highlight of his life was bringing the entire family to Italy in 2009 for a family wedding. He will be dearly missed.

It is with great sadness that the family of Ann Robertson announces her passing on February 13, 2021 at the age of 94 years at her home in State College, PA. Ann was born on June 22,1926 in Far Rockaway, NY to Peter and Angelina (Fiore) Sellitto. She married Walter Robertson on December 10,1950. Thereafter, Ann resided in North Massapequa, NY for 50 years where she was very active in the local community. Later in life, Ann relocated to State College, PA where she lived for almost 15 years.

While living in North Massapequa, Ann attended college during the evenings where she proudly earned her B.S. from Hofstra University and M.S. from Stony Brook University. Ann used her education to pursue her passion for teaching, where she taught as an elementary school teacher at Saint Patrick’s in Bay Shore, NY for 25 years. Ann was a true New Yorker, with strong values and a sense of family. Loved by many, she was known for her caring, giving, and family loving nature.

Ann was predeceased by her husband Walter, her two sisters, Margaret and Rose and three brothers, Gus, Peter and Joseph. She leaves behind her loving son Walter, sister-in-law Frances Sellitto, nephews Michael Sellitto (Laura), Joseph Sellitto (Patricia), Peter Sellitto, Paul Sellitto and nieces Diane Sellitto and Joanne Nuzzi (Paul). Ann will be deeply missed and forever loved and cherished by her family and many friends.

As a three-sport athlete Buongiovanni is an multli-talented student athlete. Buongiovanni is a member of the golf, basketball and baseball teams at Mineola. While excelling on the course and court Buongiovanni is most outstanding on the baseball diamond. As a four year varsity baseball player, he has part of many successes in the program and has been an integral part of each team that he has played on. His ability to play infield, pitch and hit for contact and power have made him a critical part of the team’s success. Buongiovanni has been able to find great balance with his busy athletic life and academics.

He holds a 95 average in school and in whatever spare time he has finds a way to be part of many clubs in school. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the Physical Education Leadership program, the National Art Honor Society and Athletes Helping

The third track project in Mineola has fully taken effect now that Main Street was permanently closed to vehicular traffic late last month. The elimination of the Main Street grade crossing is 3TC’s eighth grade cross elimination for the LIRR Expansion project. Following the Main Street closure, the pedestrian crossing will be closed intermittently due to construction in the area. A new pedestrian overpass will be built at the corner of Main and Front streets with an ADA-compliant elevator. Main Street is the third grade crossing to be eliminated in the Village of Mineola alone.

While the Willis Avenue underpass is under construction, foot and car traffic will be effected with detours.

Pedestrians and vehicles will now be detoured to Mineola Boulevard or Roslyn Road. Pedestrians who are seeking an ADA-accessible route will now be detoured to the Mineola Intermodal Center overpass that is located at 3rd Avenue and Station Road. The good news for local businesses, who definitely need the extra boost due to the ongoing pandemic, is that they will still be

accessible throughout the closure.

Following the reopening of Willis Avenue, which is expected to happen in Fall 2021, vehicles may use the new underpass at Willis Avenue to traverse between both sides of the tracks.

According to 3TC, at Main Street, grade crossing gates are in the down position as much as 53 percent of the time during a.m. and p.m. peak hours.

The need for grade crossing elimination is further illustrated by six fatal crashes at grade crossing locations in the LIRR main line corridor between 2007-17.

This reconstructed grade crossing was designed with the village and will enhance safety and provide for a quieter and more livable community along the railroad.

Garden City High School Senior Spotlight: John Scarlata

carlata has spearheaded numerous fundraising endeavors that made a difference to many families in need. He is also a dedicated student and athlete and is actively involved in his school and community.

Last spring, Scarlata coordinated a food drive for the INN in Hempstead. He raised more than $4,000 in donations from friends, neighbors, teammates and family members and was able to purchase groceries and provide a monetary contribution to the facility. He continued his work with the INN over the summer and took on the role of an ambassador, assessing needs

and communicating with residents.

He volunteered his time providing pickup service from community donors as well as vendors and restaurants across Long Island, and also participated in curbside food drives and helped organize food at the INN. Scarlata’s charitable efforts have extended into the current school year. He led the Class of 2021 in a Thanksgiving food drive that garnered 15,000 pounds of food for the INN, as well as a holiday coat drive in December that yielded 700 coats.

He arranged for free laundering services of the donated items and also purchased brand new coats with

$1,000 raised by the senior class.

In addition to his philanthropic dedication, Scarlata has served as varsity track and field team captain and is a member of the varsity soccer team with a variety of athletic awards and accolades to his name.

He is a Principal’s List honoree and plans to attend Fordham University after he graduates.

Village Board Adopts Police Reform And Reinvention Collaborative Plan The Garden City Police Reform and Reinvention Collaborative Plan, which has been posted on the village website for viewing since Jan. 22, was adopted by the Board of Trustees last Tuesday following a public hearing.

Garden City Mayor Theresa Trouvé and Police Commissioner Kenneth Jackson thanked the community stakeholders and representatives who participated in the collaboration. The village participated in this collaborative effort while conducting a full review of Garden City Police Department policies and procedures.

As a result of changes in legislation and input from the Garden City Reform Committee and Nassau County’s Police Reform Initiative,

PACT (Police and Community Trust), the GCPD has made modifications to its policies and procedures as outlined in the plan.

“This plan reflects the Village of Garden City’s and the Garden City Police Department’s commitment to serving all the people both equally and fairly,” Commissioner Jackson said. “When applying the guidance presented by the state to the existing policies and procedures in effect, it was gratifying to realize that a great deal of the improvements in

standards and practices this process was created to achieve, are already in place. The village is committed to improving upon this strong foundation and will continue to promote fairness, transparency, trust, and legitimacy while working towards reducing racial disparities.”

Several comments were received regarding the Garden City Police Reform Plan. The majority of the responses were supportive of the plan; two contained statements and questions, not suggestions, and one email contained

Couple Recuperating From COVID-19 Breathe Easier After Pulmonary Rehab

New Hyde Park couple, both recuperating from COVID-19, are breathing easier now after a stay at Excel at Woodbury Rehabilitation and Nursing, where they were treated for lingering post-COVID breathing issues. Maria, 76, and Gerard Schiraldi , 77, were admitted to Excel last month with a host of physical issues, the result of battling the coronavirus. Both experienced shortness of breath that required supplemental oxygen, swelling of the extremities and a lingering cough. They were referred to Excel’s physical and cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, under the

care of Kandrap (Ken) Shah, Senior Coordinator for Cardiopulmonary program for Paragon Management.

As more and more people survive COVID-19, the lingering effects of the virus often stay with them for months afterwards. One study states that about 10 percent of people who have had COVID-19 will experience prolonged symptoms one, two or even three months after they were infected.

The married couple left the facility this week to head home and were filled with praise for the staff.

“Things turned around when I met Ken,” Gerard said of Shah, who

guided their care. “He taught me what to do, how to do the breathing exercises and I can do so much more now. I never met a man, a trainer, like him.”

“My experience with therapy was just absolutely amazing,” Maria said.

“I’ve never had the quality of therapy that I’ve had with the staff here. I could barely walk when I came in and I can walk on my own now.”

Long Island pulmonologist, Ian H. Newmark of Northwell Health says that breathing exercises are imperative for these post COVID-19 patients, referred to as “long-haulers.”

These exercises are well-known to

those chronic pulmonary patients who are battling COPD and other lung issues, but now post COVID-19 patients are showing up at many of these support groups to learn how to get their lungs back in pre-COVID condition. Called Better Breathers Clubs, these groups fall under the umbrella of the American Lung Association (ALA) and offer an opportunity for those recovering from COVID-19 to virtually connect with others who are facing similar experiences, obtain practical information and to receive support.

Mineola-Garden City Rotary Continues To Deliver Masks As previously reported, Mineola-Garden City Rotary has responded to the district’s Million Mask Challenge that has begun several weeks ago. Supported by the Rossi Foundation, Rotary volunteers have been delivering 10,000 masks to be divided between several entities in need.

This past Friday, past club president Joanne Meyer-Jendras and Althea Robinson, Club Publicity Chair, provided 1,000 masks to fellow Rotarian Diana O’Neill, retired executive director and current board member/treasurers of the Garden City-based nonprofit Long Island Volunteer Center (LIVC).

Established in 1904, the LIVC is the local

resource center matching individuals and groups to nonprofit organizations seeking volunteer support to advance the impact and reach of programming that depends on social capital as the backbone of their operations.

The donated masks will support collaborative work in conjunction with the LIVOAD (Long Island Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster). The upcoming prom boutique gown giveaway co-sponsored with Nassau Community College, and a Summer of Service campaign geared, is to engage youth volunteers.

Village of Westbury residents can give their consent to the incumbents when the village holds its elections on Tuesday, March 16.

Mayor Peter Cavallaro and trustees William Wise and Vincent Abbatiello will be running unopposed for fouryear terms under the banner of the Action Party of Westbury.

Cavallaro was first elected in 2009 and is seeking his fourth term.

Abbatiello was tabbed to succeed the late Joan Boes in 2018 and won an election in 2019 to complete the last two years of her term. Wise has been in office since 2006.

“Despite COVID restrictions, we were able to safely secure over 500 signatures from fellow Westbury residents to place us on the ballot for the election,” Cavallaro said in a statement. “It is gratifying to us that so many assisted in obtaining the signatures, and that so many signed

He added, “We will be running on our record of accomplishment, and our plan for the future. During the past four years, I and the board have worked very hard to improve the quality of life here in Westbury.”

Cavallaro touted the village’s fiscal strength, including its high bond ratings from credit agencies, its record of coming in under the state-mandated tax cap in every budget since it came into force, its capital projects under the Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant, and its cooperation with the MTA as it built a big parking garage and eliminated the School Street crossing.

“We have plans for the future that

will continue to make Westbury one of Long Island’s most attractive communities for seniors, young families and professionals, and anyone else who enjoys living in a diverse, walkable arts-centered community,” Cavallaro stated.

Abbatiello commented, “We have always adhered to conservative and prudent fiscal practices and the efficient delivery of services. We are proud that the village has maintained the lowest tax rate possible. In fact, ours is among the lowest village tax rates of any comparable village, and our bond ratings are the highest in the village’s history. I look forward to serving another term to advance our plans for the future.”

Wise said, “We’ve also worked very hard to control our discretionary spending, and we continually seek operational changes and efficiencies so that we provide village services in the most economical way possible for our taxpayers.”

“We have a great team, and it is important to me that we maintain the team that is responsible for the many positive advances we’ve made the past four years,” Cavallaro concluded.

In an interview with Anton Media Group, Cavallaro said, “It’s important to make sure we remind people why we’re running, what our agenda is and ask for their vote. We’re not taking anything for granted.”

Yes, It Happened Here Discussing slavery on Long Island

In the popular imagination, slavery is limited to the American South. But a recent webinar sponsored by the Interfaith Institute of Long Island in Westbury focused on the sad reality that slavery happened on Long Island.

The basis of the webinar was an ambitious research project by journalism students at Stony Brook University.

“In the colonial era, every family of means had a few enslaved people in their household,” said Brooklyn College historian Lynda Day, one of the four panelists.

Day’s book, Making a Way to Freedom, A History of African Americans on Long Island, was a key source for the students. Their professor, Karen Masterson, invited her to meet with the students, and Day was pleasantly surprised by how much they had learned.

“The fact that the students already knew about what I had been writing was really very inspiring,

heartwarming,” Day said. “It was really a very good experience for a person who’s a teacher, a historian, to go to a group of young people who are already prepped to ask very intelligent, very thoughtful questions about the topic.”

Masterson, who now teaches at the University of Richmond, admired the 1619 Project on the origins of slavery in America in The New York Times.

But it paid little attention to Long Island. “I had already done a little work and understood that we had some really interesting stories to tell from Long Island. So I pitched it to my class,” she said.

Brianne Ledda, now a senior and the editor of the campus newspaper and the other students drove all over Long Island, including Brookville and Oyster Bay. Her group began at Sylvester Manor, a 17th century plantation on Shelter Island. They spoke with Donnamarie Barnes, the

archivist there, who referred Ledda to the Plain Sight project, which had been exploring slavery in the Town of East Hampton.

“I’ve lived on Long Island my entire life, and I did not know about the history of slavery here,” Ledda said. “So I felt like I was discovering something new every step of the way.”

One stunning fact she learned came from a Plain Sight volunteer, Jonathan Kuperschmid. “He said he found an account book that listed the price of cheese as worth more than what they had listed for an enslaved person,” Ledda said. “That was pretty shocking, I think, for everybody who encountered that, to even process that concept. Not only are you putting a price on a person’s life, it’s not even worth more than cheese. That’s crazy.”

The Zoom conversation drew a larger-than-usual audience.

Supervisor Bosworth Announces 2021 S.T.O.P. Program Dates T

own of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board announce the dates for the 2021 Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (S.T.O.P.) events. The first S.T.O.P event will be held on Sunday, March 21 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. at North Hempstead Beach Park’s North Lot. “The town is pleased to be able to continue to offer a convenient and environmentally responsible way for our residents to dispose of household hazardous waste, sensitive document and e-waste all in one convenient location,” Bosworth said.

The S.T.O.P. program offers Town of North Hempstead residents the opportunity to dispose of dangerous and chemical wastes that are too dangerous to dispose of with routine curbside pickups. Residents can return items such as aerosols, household chemicals, pesticides, disinfectants, fertilizers, bulbs, thermostats, rechargeable and

lithium batteries, TV’s and computers.

Latex and water-based paints, once dried out (usually 24-36 hours after the lid is removed) can be placed in a trash bag and thrown out with your regular household garbage. Latex and water-based paints will not be accepted at the S.T.O.P. collection site.

Oil-based paints, on the other hand, are considered hazardous and will be accepted at any S.T.O.P. program.

Residents may also bring their sensitive documents to the S.T.O.P. event for proper shredding and destruction to prevent identity theft. Any documents brought will be shredded on site by a document shredding company and then transported to a pulping mill for recycling. There is a limit of six “Bankers Box” sized boxes or bags of paper per car, per day. Once the documents are shredded, they will be placed into containers and sent directly to pulping mills. For every 2,000 pounds of paper the Town recycles

equates to 17 trees saved.

The town will be collecting pharmaceuticals at several events throughout the year. Please continue to check the Town’s website and social media pages for the latest information.

The S.T.O.P. events will also have a clothing donation area. Gently used and working clothes, stuffed animals, electronics, toys, sporting equipment, shoes, books, small area rugs, bikes, scooters, luggage, picture frames, table lamps, bolts of fabric, silverware, glassware, dishes and cosmetics will be collected.

Participants must be residents of North Hempstead (no commercial vehicles will allowed) and need to show a driver’s license or other valid proof of residency. Only potentially hazardous household products and e-waste will be accepted. For safety reasons, residents also must remain in their vehicle while event staff removes items to be discarded. Please also leave

pets at home so staff can safely remove items from your vehicle.

Additional S.T.O.P programs will be held throughout 2021 including: Sunday, June 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Westbury High School, Sunday, Sept. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at North Hempstead Beach Park (North Lot) and Saturday, Nov. 13 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at North Hempstead Beach Park (North Lot).

Town Unanimously Approves Working Definition Of Antisemitism Supervisor Judi Bosworth and the town board unanimously approved a resolution adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA)’s working definition of antisemitism at the Feb. 24 board meeting. The definition is now part of the town’s policy and is in keeping with the town’s “Not In Our Town” initiative which combats hate and intolerance.

“By adopting this antisemitism definition, we have further emphasized that North Hempstead is a place of unity and inclusiveness for all,” Bosworth said. “The town is committed in the fight against intolerance and hate, and we stand together with the community to send this powerful message.”

The approved resolution adopted the internationally recognized working definition of antisemitism, which has become the authoritative definition for use by governments and international organizations.

It includes a clear and definitive

message for the public by identifying acts that constitute antisemitism.

The resolution provides examples of rhetorical and physical hatred towards Jewish or non-Jewish individuals, property, institutions and religious facilities. The American Jewish Committee Long Island provided the town with guidance in drafting the resolution.

“The Long Island Region of American Jewish Committee thanks Supervisor Bosworth and the Town of North Hempstead Board for adopting the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) Working Definition of Antisemitism. Defining antisemitism is the first step to combating it and we are most appreciative that the Town of North Hempstead has taken this proactive step. The Working Definition can serve as an educational tool in schools and be used for training town staff and officials.

In an environment where 48 percent of Americans don’t know what the

term antisemitism means and hate crimes continue to rise, there is a great deal of education that needs to be done. The Working Definition has been employed by 28 foreign governments, many multilateral bodies, and successive American presidents, including President Joe Biden. The Town of North Hempstead joins the Town of Hempstead, Town of Oyster Bay, and City of Glen Cove in creating greater momentum for all municipalities on Long Island to adopt the definition,” Eric Post, Regional Director for American Jewish Committee (AJC), Long Island, said.
