Pushing Back Against Legalization Cannabis use to be banned at county properties In The Towns

n March 31, Governor Andrew Cuomo signed the “Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act” (MRTA) allowing the sale and use of age-regulated recreational cannabis.

Medical marijuana has been legal in the state since 2014.

One of the main advantages cited by proponents was the decriminalization of small amounts of marijuana possession; strict drugs laws had filled the state’s prisons. One of the new provisions states that “no fining or determination of reasonable cause to believe a crime has been committed shall be based solely on the evidence” of such facts as the odor of cannabis, the proximity of cash or currency to cannabis and the growing and cultivating of cannabis.

The new law allows anyone 21 and older to possess and transport up to 3 oz. of marijuana and 24 oz. of cannabis concentrate. Individuals will eventually be able to grow up to 12 plants and store up to five pounds of cannabis per household for personal consumption.

Opponents, and especially law enforcement, cite the complexity of determining whether drivers under the influence of marijuana are impaired.

Provision 6 of the MRTA allows municipalities to “opt-out of allowing adult-use cannabis retail dispensaries or on-site consumption licenses by passing a local law by Dec. 31, 2021 or nine months after the effective date of the legislation. They cannot opt-out of adult-use legalization.”

Several Nassau County advocacy groups have urged municipalities to opt-out, and applauded legislation by the Nassau County Legislature to ban cannabis smoking at all county-owned properties. The law, originally passed in April, was sponsored by Legislators Howard Kopel, William Gaylor III and Laura Schaefer. It noted that the state Indoor Clean Air Act does not regulate the outdoor smoking or vaping of cannabis products.

“Prior to Albany’s legalization, our town board passed a law to restrict sales to industrial zones that are at least 1,000 feet away from residential neighborhoods, schools, playgrounds, houses of worship and to keep it away from children,” said Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “The town is now reviewing the recent [legalization] by the State Legislature to come up with the safest ways to protect our children and communities.”

North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bosworth said in a statement: “Over the years, our residents have voiced both concern and support regarding various issues related to marijuana. As elected officials, it is our responsibility to listen to the varying perspectives of our constituents and use their input to make a decision that we believe is in the best interest of the town’s residents.

In an effort to ensure the town board is able to consider all perspectives, we will be forming an Adult-Use Recreational Marijuana Task Force. The task force will be comprised of residents and experts in various fields such as business, health and public safety. The task force will assist in gathering public input and lend their expertise to developing a recommendation that will be presented to the town board before the state’s opt-out deadline.”

She concluded, “As with all issues brought before us, the Town of North Hempstead will take a measured approach to this decision, giving great care and consideration to the interests of our residents. We look forward to a thoughtful and inclusive process as we move forward.”

Greg Blower, a spokesperson for the Town of Hempstead, said in a statement, “The town board is united in its opposition to the sale of recreational marijuana and also stands firmly against ‘on premises’ consumption of marijuana at facilities within the Town of Hempstead.”

2021 Town of Oyster Bay Women of Distinction

Town Honors Exceptional Residents At Special ‘Women Of Distinction’ Ceremony O

yster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and the town board held a special ceremony to recognize exceptional women who have significantly impacted their communities.

2021 Honorees:

Amy Watson of Bayville Amy Watson is a world languages teacher in the Locust Valley School District. Within the first few days of the pandemic, Watson began to feel concerned for residents in her community, mainly those who may not be able to get out of the house or couldn’t otherwise receive groceries and essentials. She and her family helped oversee operations, sorting goods and making sure all items went to seniors and others who perhaps couldn’t come out of their homes.

Donna Zaino of Syosset As a Parish Ministry Coordinator at St. Edward the Confessor, Zaino is involved in running the food pantry, coordinating pantry volunteers, distributing backpacks with school supplies for those in need, gathering gift cards for families during the holidays. Zaino distributes parish-wide emails. She also helps connect pantry clients with St. Vincent de Paul neighbors in-need and assists them with bills, insurance matters and other financial obligations.

People are invited to take what they need and if possible, leave what they can. While the concept is pretty simple, the lasting effect it has on the community is immeasurable.

Matilde Broder of Plainview Broder opened a travel agency in Plainview almost 30 years ago. She has helped countless children in Kenya through the Kenya Education Fund.

Broder hosts a consumer event inviting hundreds of clients and suppliers in the travel industry. At this event, many prizes are raffled off, with the proceeds going to the Kenya Education Fund.

To date, Broder’s efforts have raised $780,000 for this organization.

Brenda Judson of Hicksville After retiring from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Judson became a member of the Hicksville School Board, where she has served as vice president the last Alana Rosenstein of Plainview/ few years. Anna Cote of Locust Valley Anna Cote is a junior at Locust Valley High School. Like so many students, especially those in the later years of their educations, Cote was very impacted by the sudden onset of the pandemic. She purchased a sewing machine and watched instructional videos on how to put together masks.

She began—by hand-making protective masks. And she has donated them to anyone in need of one—hundreds and hundreds of masks.

Lauren Fiumara of Bethpage Lauren Flumara is a nurse manager at LIJ, who oversaw a COVID Unit at her hospital and spearheaded the COVID response. Flumara has been recognized by the hospital and the nursing community for her unique abilities in caring for psych and dementia patients. She has organized clothes drives among the staff, where much-needed clothing, shoes and coats were collected for patients in need.

Kelly Verdi of Plainview Kelly Verdi is an art teacher in the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District, where she teaches computer graphics and media arts to high school students. During the pandemic she taught her students an important lesson—she told them that creativity wasn’t canceled. She kept her students engaged, looking for fun but meaningful virtual experiences.

Robin Grossman of Jericho For years, she has played a significant role on the Syosset PTA, serving as president and serving on the PTA District Council. During the pandemic, Grossman was instrumental in organizing events in a safe and secure fashion, whether it be moving events outdoors or to virtual methods when necessary.

Cyndy Ergen of Bayville Cyndy Ergen works each and every day to make sure that all students have a fair and equal opportunity at a prime education. In the fall, Ergen organized and worked with local community organizations to arrange for backpacks filled with school supplies to be given to Locust Valley students.

Maureen McDonough of Massapequa Maureen McDonough not only promotes and supports women in positions of cosmetology through her role as a mentor in the Cosmetic Executive Women mentorship program, but in her position at Drybar, McDonough gives women confidence and self-esteem.

Her daily goal is mentoring other professionals and leading the way with the younger generation, helping young professionals develop plans to achieve their career goals in the beauty industry.

Water District Provides New Interactive Tool

he Hicksville Water District (HWD) prides itself on its relationship with the community it serves and continuously seeks new ways to proactively inform residents of district activities. To strengthen the flow of information to its residents, the district has launched a new interactive map that shows where water main leak construction work is being performed.

“We have a lot going on at the district in terms of infrastructure construction, maintenance and water main activity,” HWD Chairman Karl Schweitzer said.

“While most of our work does not impact the daily activities of our residents, some of it does; especially if it’s not planned work. With this new interactive map, residents will have access to information, including the type of work underway, where it is taking place and why, right at their fingertips.”

This new tool shows specific areas where work, such as water main breaks, hydrant flushing or hydrant maintenance, is occurring. The live map is detailed, showing every street and individual plot of land in Hicksville, making it easy to locate any place in the hamlet at any time. These details provide residents with an accurate picture of whether or not they could be affected

Homeowners Cleanup Syosset’s Theater Days Scheduled For June Arts Perseveres Throughout Pandemic Lack of a live audience, strict health and safety protocols, and students attending school in-person on a hybrid schedule could certainly hinder a school’s theatre program, but not in Syosset. The ambitious group of students and educators making up the Syosset High School Association of Creative Thespians managed to produce an evening of student directed One Acts, a New York premiere of a

contemporary play (One Stoplight Town), a Shakespeare production (Julius Caesar), and a full-length musical (High School Musical On Stage) during this most unique school year.

And there is still more to come with a virtual evening of “Unexpected Songs” and three virtual student productions to go out before the end of the year.

Oyster Bay Town will hold its S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) and Homeowners Cleanup Days for June. Residents can drop off materials at the Town’s Solid Waste Disposal Complex, located at 101 Bethpage-Sweet Hollow Rd. in Old Bethpage. On Saturday, June 5, residents can take part in the S.T.O.P. program, where they can bring various hazardous materials to the complex between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

On Saturday, June 12, the town will host a Homeowners Cleanup Day from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., where residents can bring non-hazardous waste cluttering up their homes.

The town will also offer

paper shredding services during the Homeowners Cleanup day, which gives residents the opportunity to bring unwanted documents to be shredded on-site in a safe and secure manner, free of charge. Residents only, no businesses, can bring up to four bankers’ boxes of paper to the shredding program, on Saturday, June 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The town’s S.T.O.P. and homeowners’ programs are open to residents within the town’s solid waste disposal district. Proof of residency is required.

Long Island Women Honored At Annual Spring Event

JA-Federation of New York Long Island held its virtual Spring Event on May 12, honoring Andrea Newburger of Upper Brookville and Genia Taub of Woodbury for their philanthropic accomplishments.

Newburger received the Miriam Award. Newburger and her late husband Barry have supported UJA for 30 years. When Barry was

diagnosed with progressive supranuclear palsy, she turned to UJA for help and guidance. UJA helped connect them with the Early Onset Dementia Program at the Sid Jacobson JCC, a UJA nonprofit partner.

Genia Taub received the Woman of Excellence Award.

Taub currently serves on UJA’s Long Island Women’s Cabinet, Long Island

Executive Committee and Holocaust Committee. She is also co-chair of the Jewish Life Committee. Along with her co-chairs, she launched the Family Wellness program at UJA nonprofit partner MidIsland Y JCC. The event featured a special performance by Broadway star Jarrod Spector.

The Circus Comes To Sea Cliff School The National Circus Project came to Sea Cliff Elementary School for a week-long event that combined physical fitness with circus fun and proficiency. Students had workshops led by the professionals throughout the week.

Sea Cliff fifth graders performed outdoors on the blacktop behind the school.

“The circus event was livestreamed for the entire Sea Cliff School community and peers to watch enjoy,” said Physical education teacher Megan McCormack.

These activities promote handeye coordination, concentration, the benefits of discipline and practice and group skills.

Oyster Bay Town Councilwoman Vicki Walsh and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca met with members of Brownie Troop 213 in Oyster Bay to help the girls earn their Democracy Badge. The officials discussed various levels of government, including services provided by the state, county and town. The Girl Scouts enjoyed a word search, learned about local government and enjoyed a historical tour of the Oyster Bay community.

Plainview Fire Captain Makes Chief The Plainview Fire Department wishes to acknowledge one of its former members on becoming the chief of the East Meadow Fire Department (EMFD).

On Dec. 29, 1993, Paul Kosiba (pictured) joined the ranks as firefighter assigned to Engine Company # 4. A member of the Plainview Fire Department for 15 years having served as a fire company captain and rescue lieutenant, his coming to the EMFD was met with excitement

in having an experienced firefighter joining ranks. It would be the start of a new

volunteer career, but for the EMFD, the start of big things to come.

Demonstrating outstanding enthusiasm for his new company, Kosiba, quickly became a rising star in his company. With all his knowledge and dedication, he was elected to the position of 2nd lieutenant in April of 2004. He would continue his ascend of leadership becoming 1st lieutenant in 2005, and on to captain of Plainview Engine 4 in 2006. In his years in Engine

4, Kosiba was also elected for terms of administrative offices of recording and corresponding secretary.

Having come to the EMFS with an EMS background, it was no surprise that Kosiba would continue his EMS skills maintaining an EMTCC certification, responding on Engine 4 ambulance 6144, and East Meadow’s elite 6199 Advanced life Support Response Squad.

In 2016, Kosiba was elected to the position of 1st lieutenant, leading to his

election to captain once more in 2017.

His military career boasts of 29 years, having served in the United States Coast Guard during the attacks of Sept. 11, Operation Iraqi Freedom, Hurricane Irene, Hurricane Sandy, Deep Water Horizon and his latest assignment as an Emergency Preparedness Liaison Officer to FEMA. Roslyn Grist Mill Project Secures Additional Funds For Restoration

n spite of the pandemic, fundraising efforts for the Roslyn Grist Mill Project continue to be strong. Two match challenge campaigns raised $100,035 from the Roslyn Landmark Society’s preservation fund, membership, sponsors and Roslyn High School students.

More recently, the Gerry Charitable Trust awarded the Project $250,000 for restoration efforts. This trust was established by Peggy N. and Dr. Roger G. Gerry, founders of the Roslyn Landmark Society and longtime advocates for Roslyn’s restoration and preservation efforts. To date, a total of $3.5 million has been raised to restore this historic grist mill from New York State, trusts, Nassau County, Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation and the Roslyn community. Approximately an additional $2 million will be needed to complete the building for use as an educational center that will serve as an attraction to the residents and visitors to the historic Village of Roslyn.

“As a result of this wonderful support, the restoration of the mill will continue this summer. Currently, the

historic 1700s wood timber frame is being restored and plans are underway for the construction of a new water-tight foundation,” Landmark president Howard Kroplick said. “Our goal is to lower the structure back to street level within the next year.”

“The Roslyn Landmark Society is fortunate to have loyal supporters of the organization and this historic project,” Jennifer Lister, the society’s executive director, said. “We look forward to seeing the Roslyn Grist Mill being restored and enjoyed by generations to come.”

The mill is a rare surviving Dutch framed watermill built between 1715 and 1741. It acted as Roslyn’s economic foundation for centuries and was important enough to receive a visit to the grist mill’s owner Hendrick Onderdonk from President George Washington in 1790. Converted into a tea house and museum in 1920, the building remained open for 54 years before closing and transferring ownership to Nassau County for a future restoration.

Great Neck North High School Honored By New York State New York State is honoring the Great Neck North High School with the 2021 ‘What’s Great in our State’ School/School District Award.

Across New York State, education systems have increasingly recognized the importance of supporting wellness and addressing the mental health needs of their students. Great Neck North High School is being recognized for its partnership with students, families, teachers, school administrators and other professionals to create safe, healthy and supportive learning environments. It prioritizes wellness in the school culture and organizes an annual Mental Health and Wellness Week with presentations, student workshops and mindfulness activities.

Veteran Wantagh Chief Passes

he Board of Fire Commissioners, chiefs, officers and members of the Wantagh Fire Department and officers and members of Engine 2 regret to announce the passing of Honorary Chief Thomas L. Adams on May 12. Honorary Chief Adams, “T.A.” as he was affectionately known, was a 59-year member of the Wantagh Fire Department.

Honorary Chief Thomas Adams joined the Wantagh Fire Department on March 26, 1962 and was assigned to Engine 2. After serving his probationary period and being an active member for eight years, he was elected lieutenant in 1970. In 1971, he was elected captain and served in that position for three years before going back to the “back step” for about a year before again being asked to serve as Captain. After serving as Captain, he returned to the position of Chief Chauffer, a position he held for many

years where he was a very active driver both for alarms and parades. He provided guidance and instruction for many young members. Adams was also active in Company 2 and served in several positions and was an Honorary President.

In 2012, Adams was named an Honorary Chief in recognition of 50 years of service, something that he celebrated and was rightly proud of. His smile was wide as he rode

on one of the engines or in a Chief’s car as the department paraded down Wantagh Avenue. Recently, when we visited him while he was in rehab, he could be seen proudly wearing his white hat and saluting those that assembled to cheer him up.

For his many years of service, Adams was awarded the Town of Hempstead “Firefighter of the Year” award in 2012.

When we think of Adams we think of two things: first, he always spoke with great love about his family, often sharing stories about his children and grandchildren. It was easy to see how proud he was and

how much love he had for each of them. Then there was his sense of humor—T.A. loved to laugh and make others laugh. He never took things too seriously and around the firehouse he was often one of the ones to bust chops on those who needed it, and in any firehouse, both a sense of humor and someone to “keep order” are essential.

Tom was married to his beloved wife for more than 60 years. They raised five children and were blessed with 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. His love and commitment to the fire department was second

only to his love, devotion and commitment to his family.

Wake services were on Sunday, May 16, and a Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church on May 17. Burial was at St. John’s Cemetery in Middle Village.

The funeral procession was escorted by Engine 2 from the funeral home to the church. Members assembled to pay their final respects as they drove past by Wantagh’s Station #2, passing under a flag arch, which was set up

by Wantagh Ladder 2 and Levittown’s Ladder 6.

Science Research Pair Earns NYSSEF Award

arden City High School freshmen Diego Cadavid and James Nagler won second place in the 2021 New York State Science & Engineering Fair’s Robotics and Intelligent Machines category for “Project Neuron-Prosthetic Hand Controlled by Brain Waves.” With prior expertise in computer science, robotics, and engineering, they worked around pandemic challenges and completed the entire venture remotely.

Based on their high score during the initial judging, Cadavid and Nagler were selected to advance to the lighting round, which was live and synchronous on Zoom. They were up against competitors from all high school grade levels and fielded a round of questions from the judges in addition to presenting their project.

their work in detail and explained its function.

“The brain waves were interpreted through a MindFlex headset from an old Mattel game, and processed and wirelessly sent through an Arduino,” they said. “The brain waves are then sent to an external Arduino, which in this case is the prosthetic hand.

The prosthetic hand then interprets the brain wave data to move a finger based on the user’s differing concentration levels. All Arduinos work through a custom PCB (Printed Circuit Board) that was designed and printed. Through a series of smoothing algorithms and fine-tuning, the brain wave reading is quite reliable and was very fun to create over the course of the school year.”

A total of ten Garden City High School teams comprised of 16 students entered projects

into this highly rigorous competition. Their categories included Earth & Environmental Sciences, Mathematics, Robotics, Biochemistry, Biomedical & Health Science and Computational Biology.

The competition required contenders to conduct independent research, produce a YouTube video of their work, write an abstract, create a Google Site, file paperwork and arrange team meetings to film their videos, all during the period of remote and hybrid learning. Science Research teacher Dr. Steven Gordon provided mentorship for in-school experiments, presentations and videos and facilitated entry in the competition and chemistry teacher Dr. Meredith Foley oversaw the computational biology projects.

Commuting Through Nature At Merillon Avenue A new public art project at Merillon Avenue commissioned by MTA Arts & Design, LIRR and MTA Construction and Development celebrates the landscape of the community surrounding the station. The glass windows of two new elevator towers and areas along each platform are based on multimedia paintings by New York State based artist Cara Enteles.

The concept of the artwork is centered on the monarch butterfly, considered by the artist to be “the ultimate commuter”, which annually makes a 3,000-mile migration between Canada, Florida, and Mexico. The flight path crosses this region of New York State at the end of each summer.

Enteles’ project Commuting Through Nature depicts monarchs in each composition throughout the station. They are stunningly rendered in laminated glass, which allows light to filter through and illuminate the naturally occurring vibrancy. These butterflies appear alongside flowers and plants that will be familiar to residents of Garden City or visitors to the Garden City Bird Sanctuary. Among them are various types of Milkweed, Asters, Queen Anne’s Lace, vines, and other local plant life, lovingly selected

by Enteles who is an avid gardener.

The oversized scale allows those who

encounter the artwork to become immersed in the vista. The images are activated by light that changes over the course of a day, and through the seasons of the year.

The original artwork created by Enteles in her studio combines silkscreen printing and oil painting on industrial substrates such as aluminum and plexiglass, a unique technique that mimics the natural reflection of light.

The artist then worked with artisans to translate the work into the large panels of glass for the elevator towers and shelters, linking the art with the surrounding station architecture. She also provided the design of a motif for a decorative metal fence along a portion of the platform.

The artwork is part of a complete rebuilding of the Merillon Avenue station. As part of the LIRR Expansion Project, Merillon Avenue Station will receive station enhancements developed after extensive consultation with the community, including platform removal and replacement to accommodate 12-car trains; platform canopies; new platform furnishings and accoutrements including benches, shelters, and signage; ADA-compliant mobility improvements including elevators and ramps; free public Wi-Fi and digital information displays.

Village Reports Elevators To Be Turned Over To MTA This Month

A major announcement was recently made by the Village of Floral Park Board of Trustees regarding the newly constructed elevators at the Floral Park LIRR station.

“The elevators at the LIRR station are being turned over to the MTA on June 7,” trustee Archie Cheng said at a recent board meeting. “After their initial testing, an electrical box had to be changed and presumably that is the reason for the delay. Once turned over, it is up to the MTA to decide when to open the elevators to the public.”

The announcement is welcoming news for some since for the longest time people have said that the station wasn’t ADA-compliant due to its steep staircase. The new three ADAcompliant elevators were installed in the north, south and central parts of the station.

“The work near Tunnel Street will be continuing with the installation of retaining walls and switch work for the next four to six months,” Cheng added.

“Most of the machinery and equipment for this work will come in from the New Hyde Park side of the sump. We will be planning a landscaping meeting in the next two weeks to decide what we might want installed at the end of the dead end streets that intersect with the

The Arts Find A Home In Westbury

Westbury Mayor Peter Cavallaro delivered the punchline after detailing how the local arts organization finally found a home.

The mayor presided over a ribbon cutting on May 20 of the new Westbury Arts building on Schenck Avenue. It was one of the fruits of the $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) grant the village earned in 2016.

“It’s creating energy in our downtown and creating reasons for people to come to our downtown,” Cavallaro told the assembled. “The Westbury Arts Council was in its infancy when we were awarded the grant. From the very beginning, we were always talking about getting an arts-centered space where the Arts Council could do its best work. We talked about getting a storefront on Post Avenue, but nothing happened. It wasn’t the right time.”

Then came the joke about the $10 million.

The mayor observed that the building was designed specifically to be a place for art. Cavallaro introduced Secretary of State Rossanna Rosado, who called herself impressed and inspired. It was the first actual event she had been to since the pandemic curtailed in-person activities.

Rosado related that her staff told her about the ribbon cutting, and “I said yes for two reasons. The first one is, I love Westbury. And I love the DRI programs created for places like Westbury to give shot in the arm. We often as communities, as government leaders, think of art as a luxury. But in this pandemic we’ve found out that art is also essential. I’m so happy to see what this community has done through its DRI. So I’m really happy to be here today at this launch. The space is beautiful and is only a part of this DRI downtown corridor.”

Cavallaro praised the arts group as “the most spontaneously energetic and active and successful organization that I’ve seen take root in my 30-plus years in local government. And it’s really because of the passion and dedication of the members and the board.”

He named past presidents Rocco Lanzillota and Chrissy Shelley, and said he felt confident in handing the building over to an organization led by Julie Lyon, the current president.

“I’m a little bit overwhelmed and really excited. This has been a long time coming,” Lyon said.

She called Westbury Arts “an organization whose mission is to develop arts and cultural programming that connects, educates and inspires our community. Our vision is a community where arts and culture are valued and instill a sense of belonging and pride.

And our motto is ‘Together, We Create Westbury.’”

State Assemblyman Michael Montesano said of the use of DRI grants, “It just goes to show you how well thought out their projects are, their plans are. And their ability to work with the residents of the village for the betterment of the village.

Everything is just taking off. It’s just a pleasure to be here.”

Nassau County Legislator Laura Schaefer also thanked Rosado and Cavallaro.

The lifelong Westbury resident said, “We’ve never had anything like this.

And I think it’s fabulous. From what I’m looking at, everything is beautiful.

This facility is beautiful. The architecture. The design. So I want to say congratulations.”

Westbury Chooses Its Next Superintendent of Schools Tahira A. Dupree Chase, Ed.D. will be succeeding Eudes Budhai as superintendent of the Westbury School District on July 1. Budhai will become head of the Nyack schools on July 1. His last day at Westbury will be June 30. Chase was chosen from more than 30 candidates in a national search.

The Black Crowes Take Flight Again

hen Chris and Rich Robinson made the November 2019 announcement that the Black Crowes were reuniting, it represented a reconciliation between the siblings after the band was blown up in 2015. The plan was to launch a lengthy reunion tour in 2020 commemorating the 30th anniversary of the group’s 1990 debut album Shake Your Money Maker.

Then COVID-19 struck and the touring industry, along with the rest of the world, ground to a halt. For guitarist Rich Robinson, this unexpected respite turned out to be a mixed blessing, allowing him to get some perspective, while quarantining at home with his family in Nashville.

Gerngras Park And Residents Benefit From Eagle Scout Project We are proud to honor several local Eagle Scouts who recently helped beautify Gerngras Park in Farmingdale Village. Even with several obstacles, they persevered. And as an Eagle Scout myself, I can relate to their steadfast dedication and community work, and am happy to announce the wonderful new picnic benches at Gerngras Park. Sean Peters, a mechanical engineering major at NYIT, tried to complete his Eagle project and hit several dead ends. As Sean himself explains it: “The town I originally went to turned me down because they only use specific expensive products. After that, the coronavirus pandemic started and stopped me from getting the ball rolling once again. Finally, I was approved by the district for a six-month extension due to the coronavirus and began working immediately. After countless hours meeting with knowledgeable people like my Eagle Scout Coach John Sharp, we got started (this project may not have been possible without John’s guidance and planning). Then I was finally ready for approval by the chairman but just when I was ready to move forward we got slammed with snow and I was not able to work on this for over a month. Nevertheless, the snow melted and I got the necessary

to use only the best and strongest lumber. Home Depot was very generous and donated the stain we needed and gave us a discount on the lumber. The construction happened at a past Troop 601 Eagle Scout Zack Montenero’s house. He Ralph aged out when I first joined the troop, Ekstrand but with his generosity we had a site to build. Pins And Needles, Needles And Pins Do you get squeamish if someone mentions the word “acupuncture?” I know I do. Just the thought of needles makes my knees go weak.

Working at Winthrop Hospital, I regularly gave blood. However, I don’t have to look at the technician when she puts the needle into my arm. I conveniently turn my head when getting vaccinated.

There is no requirement to watch the procedure, right?

There’s usually no real pain when getting a needle, so I can’t put my finger on my aversion to it. Everyone has had a needle stick at one point or another.

It’s a quick thing and over in just a few seconds. I’ve even been complimented that my veins are easy to find and good for donating blood. So, I’ve got that going for me.

But acupuncture? The whole premise requires sticking multiple needles into your body. My vision of acupuncture keeps returning to the final scene of the classic Laurel and Hardy movie, March of the Wooden Soldiers. Ollie is accidentally shot in his back with a cannon full of darts intended for the bogeymen. His back was covered entirely in darts that Stan comically pulls out one at a time. Sheesh…

Contrary to popular belief, acupuncture is not voodoo. It’s just a little mysterious and misunderstood, at least

Trust me. Coming from a person who has been needle-phobic his entire life, it’s a great big Nothing-Burger. In subsequent sessions, I’ve had needles in my ears and on the top of my hands.

I can’t say I have any idea what placing needles in those specific locations has to do with helping ease back pain.

But Chris knows, and that’s good enough for me. Part of the treatment is also a Chinese massage therapy called Tui Na (without the needles, of course) and stretching.

Is acupuncture a miracle cure? Of course not. You don’t walk out doing cartwheels after one treatment. Like any therapy, it takes time to get better. I like to think of it as baby steps. Physical therapy is hard work, but acupuncture is much more therapeutic, almost relaxing.

As long as I don’t have to look at the needles…

Police officers from the sixth precinct were present at the medication drive-thru event in East Hills where they oversaw the safe collection of expired and unwanted pharmaceuticals on Sunday, May 23. The program was initiated and implemented by Roslyn High School students, Adam Liebowitz and Lior Schwartz, co-chairs and founders of the program.

The purpose of the pill drive is to help keep medications out of the hands of children and those who might abuse it and to protect our environment. When pharmaceuticals are improperly disposed of, they can contaminate our water supply and end up in our drinking water. Thanks to the local Nassau County Police Precinct the medications were taken away for safe disposal and destroyed by high temperature incineration.

Hampton Street School Roslyn Chair Of English Celebrates Earth Day Selected For Humanities Advisory Council A

s part of ongoing celebrations of Earth Day, students at Hampton Street School in the Mineola Union Free School District are getting outdoors and participating in activities to help our planet. Over the course of three days, each grade level circled through stations of different tasks led by STEAM teacher Lisa Richards.

Students participated in schoolwide planting projects. Kindergarten classes planted zinnias, first graders continued to develop monarch waystations and second grade classes established a native species garden. The goal of the planting projects is to help the environment and wildlife, while also beautifying the school grounds.

Some classes had the opportunity to work with organizations like the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary and Volunteers for Wildlife. Educators with the Theodore Roosevelt Sanctuary spoke with students about bird adaptations whereas Volunteers for Wildlife educators brought in real animals for

There are still a limited number of spots available in the Levittown Public Schools’ 2021-22 Universal Pre-K Program. The program, consisting of two and half hours per day, five days a week, is open to children residing in the Levittown School District who turn four-years-old on or before Dec. 1, 2021.

The program will be housed at one of the district’s UPK providers beginning in September 2021 for 180 days through June 2022, roughly coinciding with the Levittown School District calendar. All students must be potty-trained and fully immunized by the start of school in September. County Executive Proposes Major Boost For Nassau’s Business Recovery

n another effort to provide a major boost to businesses as they continue to struggle with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran proposed a major business recovery program to direct approximately $25 million in American Recovery Plan (ARP) funds to grants, loans and assistance to Nassau’s downtown businesses.

The plan is drawn from a recent survey conducted by Hofstra University at the request of the county executive and her Coronavirus Economic Advisory Council (EAC), which found that direct support of small businesses, coupled with a streamlined application process, are the most important ways for Nassau to aid recovery. The initiative comes on the heels of the county executive’s proposal to provide $100 million in direct relief to almost 300,000 middle-class homeowners.

Homeowners are urged to spend their direct relief at local businesses and in downtown shopping areas.

Supported by the Hofstra University Needs Survey results, the county executive’s plan will support:

• Alleviating downward economic pressures by expanding the county’s highly successful Restaurant Recovery Grant Program to include broader

categories of small businesses, including all food services, retail and other hard-hit businesses.

While we were fortunate to direct many of our residents to work remotely, the members of our healthcare communities were not able to have this luxury and put their lives at risk. Police Investigate Syosset Burglary The Second Squad is investigating a burglary that occurred on May 20 at 11:11 a.m. in Syosset.

According to detectives, an unknown male subject entered a residence on Leonard Road through a front window. The subject took an undisclosed amount a jewelry and fled the scene in a Black Range Rover northbound on Leonard Road. He is

JOSEPH MARK LETTERA Joseph Mark Lettera, 65, passed suddenly on Wednesday, May 12, 2021 in Bethlehem Pennsylvania.

Born in San Diego, he was the son of former Roslyn basketball coach, Joe Lettera and mother Janice. He was the beloved husband of Mary Kay Lettera with whom he shared over 33 years of loving marriage.

Joe was a multi sport athlete at Roslyn High School. He was a starting forward on Roslyn’s 1973 basketball team that won the North Shore Championship. He was Captain and voted Most Valuable Player on the 1972 football team. Joe also participated in varsity track.

Joe worked as a courier for Miller Keystone Blood Center.

He was a collector of antique guns, bows and toys. Joe enjoyed hunting and was an avid Buffalo Bill and Braves fan.

He attended Shirley Martin’s Bible study for over 20 years.

Other survivors are stepdaughter, Sara Rose Lambert and husband Steve; grandchildren, Steven and Alexander Lambert; sister Valerie and brother Paul.

A mass of Christian burial took place on Saturday, May 22 at St. Ursula Catholic Church, Fountain Hill, PA. Interment followed at Resurrection Cemetery, Allentown.

Guidance Center To Host Jonathan Krevat Memorial Golf And Tennis Classic

N

orth Shore Child & Family Guidance Center is excited to announce that its Jonathan Krevat Memorial Golf & Tennis Classic is back this year at a spectacular new location, Nassau Country Club in Glen Cove. The event, which will be held on June 14, raises money for the Guidance Center, Long Island’s premiere children’s mental health organization.

“Our work bringing hope and healing to kids and families is more important than ever,” said Michael Mondiello, one of the event’s cochairs and a Guidance Center board member. “The pandemic has created enormous stress and anxiety, and we are here to help address the crisis in children’s mental health.”

Co-chair Michael Schnepper concurred, stating, “The past year has been difficult for adults, but in some ways it’s been even harder for young people. Their entire normal routines with school, friends and extracurricular activities were upended, and the

impact is going to continue long after COVID-19 is behind us. That’s why this fundraiser is such a crucial event.”

The Krevat Cup is one of the Guidance Center’s most anticipated events of the year, providing a full day of activities.

“Golf may be the main feature, but

tennis is my game,” said Troy Slade, co-chair and board member. “And we’re adding pickleball to the event for the first time ever, so that’s going to provide even more opportunity for friendly competition.”

While all current health and safety protocols will be in place to protect

the safety of guests and staff, most of the event will be held outdoors, making it a perfect opportunity to enjoy great games while benefiting an important cause.

“The golf course is among Long Island’s best,” said board member Dan Oliver, this year’s newest Krevat Cup co-chair. “It’s going to be a terrific day, including a delicious breakfast, lunch and cocktail hour. I hope many community members will join us to support the life-saving work of the Guidance Center.”

The event will also feature an exclusive silent auction, which is open to everyone, regardless of whether they buy tickets for the day. Bidding began on June 1.
