Pinwheels For Prevention Provides Hope

The campaign, Pinwheels for Prevention, was started by the Krya Champions Foundation and lead by Jacqueline Franchetti. Seven hundred forty-three pinwheels will be placed at Mary Jane Davies Park in Manhasset and Blumenfield Park in Port Washington.

Residents Voice Concern Over Environmental Impacts For Shore Road Development

he Town of North Hempstead held a public scoping session on March 23 to give residents of Port Washington the chance to comment on what should be included in the final scope of the environmental impact statement for the property located at 145 West Shore Rd. in Port Washington.

Southern Land Company (SLC)—a Nashville, Tennessee-based real estate development company—is seeking a change in zoning from “ResidenceAAA” to “multiple residence.” The applicant is proposing to construct a seven-level, 176-unit multiple residence on the 7.17-acre, partially-underwater property, as well as a 29-slip marina on Hempstead Harbor, minutes from North Hempstead Beach Park.

The Town of North Hempstead, who has been named the lead agency in the project, must comply with the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) in order to determine the potential environmental impacts that the proposed changes to the zoning may have on the surrounding area. The town identified eight potential areas of concern including: surface water, groundwater, flooding, aesthetic resources, transportation, noise, odor and light, human health and community plans and character.

During the meeting, Town of North Hempstead Planning Commissioner Michael Levine stated that this “will not be a fast process and will take the better part of the year.” The town will issue a final scope in the next two or three weeks, which will tell the applicant what areas of concern the final scope must include. Following that, a final impact statement will be created later this year or in early 2022. Levine stated that if the rezoning is successful, the applicant will also need to seek approval from an appellate board for several of the variances they are seeking.

“It’s a fairly lengthy process,” Levine said. “We try to streamline it as best as we can. But at the very least no decisions on the application will be made in the near term. It’s going to be a long process of going through the environmental evaluations [and conducting several public hearings.”

“Some were under the impression that the idea is to reclaim or fill in or build on pilings—the applicant is not proposing that,” Levine said. “Most waterfront parcels are privately owned out to the knee-high water line and then the town owns the underwater land beyond that. This one is different, it actually has defined boundaries out into the water. It’s not the only case we have in the town, but it’s not the most common. What their proposing to do is apply all of the develop yield for the full seven acres and condense it on the upland. In the 90 years since the town adopted it’s first zoning code, we have been unable to find any prior cases where someone has attempted to do that and so the code is silent on the matter. We have asked the town attorney to research whether or not you can claim development rights to the underwater land.”

Levine further stated that the research into that matter is ongoing.

Deegan Terrana Law spoke on behalf of the property’s owners.

“The plan is to clean up the site and to develop a 176-unit luxury residential building with a public marina and other publicly accessible amenities,” Deegan-Dickson said during her presentation.

The meeting was then opened to public comment. Levine stated that in advance of the meeting, the town had received more than 60 written comments. Two themes that were most frequently cited, Levine stated, were the traffic impact study with a specific look at the Beacon Hill neighborhood and tax abatements and tax revenues to special districts.

Levine stated both those topics would be explored in-depth as part of the final scope.

Port resident Stephen Klyce was the first to speak during the public comment portion of the meeting.

Kylce voiced his opposition for the project, stating it would have adverse environmental affects on the “already overburdened infrastructure.” Public services such as the Port Washington

Water Pollution Control District, PSEG Long Island and National Grid would face further strain.

“Port Washington, the Town of North Hempstead and Nassau County did not have adequate infrastructural resources to service the needs of the West Shore residences plan without significant improvements in energy supply, water supply and human waste treatment plants,” Klyce said.

“Continued incremental demands on these overburdened resources is really a serious concern that impacts the natural environment and quality of life of our residents.”

Although the public comment portion of the meeting was strictly to give feedback on what should be included in the final scope, Port resident Jeff Jackson voiced his support for the proposed development.

“I believe that the community benefits far outweigh any of the negatives,” Jackson said. “The area is currently contaminated, and the builder is agreeing to do a significant cleanup to the area. The area right now is kind of a commercial blighted site, and the builder is going to do a cleanup of that area as well.”

Other residents voiced their concerns citing parking and traffic concerns, affects on the animals and aquatic life, the affects on public services (most notably water and sewage) as well as flooding and stormwater management.

The following day, Southern Land Company emailed a written statement to the Port Washington News, stating how appreciative they were to receive feedback from the community.

“Southern Land Company and our partners appreciated the opportunity to present facts about our project plans for 145 West Shore Road, Port Washington, and hear community members’ comments during the Town of North Hempstead’s public scoping session.

We will continue to comply with the SEQRA process and with the Town of North Hempstead,” SLC said. “We look forward to reviewing the final scope in the upcoming weeks.”

Pinwheels For Prevention Provides Hope

In the last decade, 725 New York children deaths have been kept hidden by Child Protective Services, according to the Times Union. Eighteen more have been killed by their own parent.

One of them was Franchetti’s daughter, Kyra Franchetti.

Franchetti’s 2 year-old daughter Kyra was with her father in Virginia on a court-sanctioned visit when he shot her twice in the back. He then proceeded to set his home on fire and killed himself as well.

Jacqueline Franchetti has turned her nightmare into a cause for change, specifically for the family courts system in New York. The Manhasset resident has gone up to Albany to testify and lobby on the matter, previously working on a federal resolution passed in the House of Representatives last year, but has yet to be taken up by the Senate. She currently is working on getting three different bills passed in New York State to help reform the family court system and protect innocent children.

The Pinwheels for Prevention event will start on what would have been Kyra’s seventh birthday, April 4. Each pinwheel at the park will represent one child that has been lost in New York State due to family violence and abuse. Kyra’s Champions will be offering seven pinwheels for $28 on their website, kyraschampions.org.

“These are both the parks where Kyra used to play all the time. I have wonderful fond memories of her there,” Franchetti said. “To see these pinwheels at the parks is going to mean a lot to me. My hope is that what these do is open the conversation for really a larger story here. Family violence and child abuse happens behind closed doors. We don’t often talk about it, but if we don’t discuss this, how many more children will die? How many more children are going to be abused?”

“These pinwheels are a fitting tribute to celebrate and honor Kyra’s life and legacy. Each of the 743 pinwheels honor the memory of the children who tragically lost their lives due to child abuse,” Councilmember Veronica Lurvey said. “The town is proud to be able to join Kyra’s Champions to bring attention to National Child Abuse Prevention Month and to have these blue pinwheels at two of Kyra’s favorite parks.”

Franchetti is hoping that her activism will make sure that no other child will have to go through what she did.

“I had ended the relationship when I was pregnant with Kyra at the time,” Franchetti said. “It was an abusive relationship and similar to many others who

Many abusers will use the family courts as another way to not only abuse the other person, but also, it’s all about power and control. He wanted to use the family court system as a way to torture me. Ultimately, he used it as a way to murder Kyra.”

After Kyra was born in April 2014, Franchetti found herself in family court a month later fighting for custody. She also warned the judge that the father was abusive, cursed at her in front of Kyra, stalked her and was not following medical directives for Kyra. The judge, Danielle Peterson, told her to “grow up,” and at the last court hearing, said, “this is not a life or death situation,” according to Franchetti.

Franchetti was rebuffed by Peterson after trying to set up a meeting in the wake of Kyra’s death. She believes that the court is not set up to protect children, but protect those that may endanger them.

“Family court is not a place that you’d want to be,”

Franchetti said. “I was shocked to find out that our court system is set up to protect the abuser and not the child, and that needs to change.”

Franchetti is now focusing her activism at the state level to make changes that could have saved Kyra’s life and others in the future. Pinwheels for Prevention is one event she is hoping that can make real change and provide words to a silent conversation.

“Kyra’s Champions is an outstanding child safety and advocacy group which works to bring attention to promote and protect those children who are at risk of family violence,” Supervisor Judi Bosworth said. “We are so glad that we could honor Kyra on what would have been her 7th birthday by working to bring more attention to National Child Abuse Prevention Month.”

Cemetery Receives County Approval For Land Purchase

n March 22, the Nassau County Legislature unanimously approved a land acquisition request submitted by the Nassau Knolls Cemetery in Port Washington. The cemetery, which has operated its business in the same location since 1900, is currently in contract to purchase a small parcel of land on Beechwood Avenue from its current owners. The parcel is located alongside of existing Nassau Knolls property and will be used for cemetery purposes.

“Having been in business for well over 100 years, Knolls Cemetery has no new land to develop,” Knolls Cemetery General Manager Jim Gallante said. “This property will help us provide for the future needs of the residents of Nassau County.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR LIBRARY BOARD ELECTIONS We write in support of incumbents Nancy Comer and William Keller, who are running for reelection to the Port Washington Public Library Board.

As president of the board until 2020, John had the honor of working alongside of Nancy and Bill for many years. They are deeply committed to our wonderful library and have worked tirelessly during their terms to ensure that it remains a

jewel of our community. They have contributed materially to numerous initiatives over the years, including: the opening of the renovated and expanded children’s room and a new Adult Learning Center; expansion of the Community Outreach and English as a Second Language programs; and the transition to a new management team led by Director Keith Klang and Assistant Director James Hutter. Nancy and

Bill’s stewardship through these enhancements was vital.

Significantly, all of this was accomplished with balanced budgets and little or no tax increases in each of the past five years.

There still remains plenty of work to be done. The library will continue with a facilities preventive maintenance program that will ensure the continued viability of its physical plant. The five-year

strategic planning exercise that is underway will help library adapt to the post-COVID needs of our community.

We cannot think of two better people to help guide the library through the next five years than Nancy Comer and William Keller.

Please consider casting your vote for them on Tuesday, April 13.

KELLER FOR LIBRARY TRUSTEE I am writing to urge your readers to support Bill Keller for a second term as a trustee of the Port Washington Public Library (PWPL).

I can think of no one better suited for the position.

I have known Bill all my life.

We grew up together in Port Washington. I know Bill to be a person of the utmost intelligence and integrity. He loves Port Washington; in fact, after living elsewhere for a number of years, he decided to resettle here. He chose Port for many reasons, including his love of

the community and his respect for our school system. Bill’s youngest son received an excellent education in the Port schools; he is now a student at the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, Bill has been active in the community. Before he served as Library Trustee, he served on the Education Foundation Advisory Board and the Port Washington School District Legislative and Governmental Affairs Committee.

Bill’s professional life further qualifies him for a second term

on the library board. Most recently, Bill recently retired as the Vice President for Finance and Administration of Queens College, CUNY. He was responsible for budgeting, technology, facilities operations and construction, human resources, and strategic planning. His experience makes him a very valuable member of the PWPL Board for he can provide oversight for these critical finance and management functions at the PWPL. In the years ahead, the Library

will continue to face new challenges. Bill’s expertise and experience, as well as his love of our town, make him ideally suited to serve once again as library trustee. As he did in his first term, he will take his charge seriously and devote himself fully to doing the best job he can. The library would be lucky to have him on its board for another term.

Marino Lodge In Port Washington Hosted Installation Ceremony

O

n March 17, the Order Sons & Daughters of Italy in America John Michael Marino Lodge No.1389 in Port Washington hosted the Installation Ceremony of its 202122 Lodge Council. It was the first time in the 95-year history of the Lodge that the installation ceremony was held utilizing Zoom technology vs. an in-person ceremony.

Peter Prudente was installed as the 47th President of the Lodge along with his council of 22 Lodge members.

Most notably, Prudente became an altruistic donor (one of 150 such donors in New York State in 2019) by donating his kidney to a Long Island woman in desperate need of a kidney transplant. The recipient of the kidney was someone totally unknown to Prudente. In recognition of this and his long-standing community service, Prudente received the U.S. Congressional Award from

Congressman Thomas Suozzi and was commissioned a Commonwealth of Kentucky Colonel by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear. The Grand Lodge Order of the Elks awarded Peter the 2019-2020 Distinguished Citizens Award. In February 2019, the Grand Lodge of New York Order Sons & Daughters of Italy in America made Prudente the first recipient of its Positive Image Award—an award created by Grand Lodge President Anthony Naccarato at the New York State Commission for Social Justice’s 40th Anniversary Dinner Dance.

County Executive Kicks Off New Vaccine Distribution Center At Nassau Coliseum

ast Tuesday, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran kicked off the opening of the county’s newest COVID-19 vaccination distribution center located at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale. The coliseum will begin by vaccinating more than 1,000 residents and as supply and eligibility expand, it will serve as an important portion of the county’s vaccination infrastructure.

“This is the first day that we are offering vaccines at Nassau Coliseum,” County Executive Curran said at the press conference. “Today is just a soft launch, but when it ramps up we will be [vaccinating] probably 350 to 400 a day. We actually have the capacity to do 1,000 a day.”

As most people can conclude, the vaccine is like liquid gold and with issues of supply not reaching enough people who want to be vaccinated, that will soon change thanks to the increase of production from vaccine companies. Johnson & Johnson is expected to deliver 20 million doses alone of its single-dose shot by the end of this month across the country.

So far more than 32 percent of county residents have received at least one dose of the vaccine.

“At the beginning of the distribution of the vaccine, there was a real problem of supply and demand,” Curran said. “The demand was much higher than the supply. Now, the demand is still higher than the supply at this point, but it is getting closer together. We’re hearing from the state, we’re hearing from Senator [Chuck] Schumer and the federal government, that we will be getting a lot more vaccine in the coming weeks. It is really important to have as many vaccine sites as we can.”

Roslyn Board Greenlights Apartments

he corner of Warner and Lincoln Avenues near the Roslyn railroad station will have a different look a few years hence. On March 23, the Village of Roslyn Board of Trustees unanimously voted (5-0) to approve a request by 281-301 Warner Avenue LLC to erect a mixed use building consisting of 54 rental units with retail space.

The board also approved the environmental impact statement’s conclusion that the project would have no negative impact.

Roslyn resident Jerry Karlik and J. K. Equities bought the .85-acre parcel at 281-301 Warner Ave. for about $4.2 million in July 2018 and submitted a proposal for a mixed-use building in what was then an area zoned commercial.

Last October, the village board voted to change the area adjacent to the railroad station to transit mixed unit (TMU) in order to encourage transit-oriented development (TOD).

Under the new TMU, the area is zoned for a gross density of 30 units/ acre, meaning by right the project would be limited to 27 apartments.

This was the size that most residents who weighed in at numerous public hearings, as well as the Roslyn School District, favored.

But as a number of board members stated at the March 23 Zoom meeting, 27 apartments would not be economically viable for the developer. It first asked for 72 and was negotiated down to a final figure of 54. This number was made possible by zoning incentives written into the code that allow developers to overcome limitations such as height and density by offering a range of incentives. 281-301 Warner Avenue LLC agreed to streetscape improvements and more importantly, 20 percent workforce housing, meaning that 11 apartments will be offered at lower than market rates.

The property is 179x208 feet. Its fair market value in 2021 was about $2.8 million and its owners paid about $115,000 in school and general taxes.

Nassau IDA Approves Amazon’s $72 Million Investment to Construct Warehouse

That is exactly what this Amazon project will do,” said Nassau County Executive Laura Curran. “I am pleased that after decades of blight and inaction, this private sector investment will deliver both construction jobs and permanent positions to the former Cerro Wire site—ensuring a net benefit to our residents and offer a post-COVID boost our local economy needs.”

n a brightly sunny March 7, 100 families from Hicksville Public Schools were provided parking spaces at the Broadway Mall to complete a chalk drawing, the culminating event of a three-week grades K-12 Kindness Challenge. The event was made possible by a collaborative effort involving the Hicksville Council of PTAs, the Broadway Commons Mall and the Hicksville Public Schools.

“On behalf of the Hicksville Council of PTAs, it was an absolute pleasure to partner with Broadway Commons to celebrate Random Acts of Kindness within our community,” Council of PTAs President Erin Guida said. “It was wonderful to see parents and children making special memories together while simultaneously supporting our local businesses and thanking our Hicksville Heroes.”

“It was great,” said one member of a Hicksville High School chalk drawing team. “It brought us all together—something we have not been able to do for a year because of the pandemic.”

Younger artists said it was fun and that they learned about color blending as they made the blank parking spaces come alive with color and messages of kindness.

Many thanks to the Broadway Commons Mall for supplying the parking spaces, a bag of chalks, $10 gift card and a blanket to each of the participant groups. To assist local businesses, YES Community Counseling Center (YESCCC) is hosting free TIPS Training, a skills-based training designed to prevent intoxication, drunk driving and underage drinking.

TIPS is supported by Farmingdale State College’s Alcohol & Drug Abuse Prevention Team (ADAPT), Levittown Community Action Coalition (LCAC), Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC), the Town of Hempstead, Town of Oyster Bay, and the Nassau County Police Department.

Businesses are invited to the innovative VIRTUAL training which seeks to enhance the fundamental “people skills” of servers, sellers and consumers of alcohol. In addition, TIPS training can reduce exposure to alcohol liability lawsuits and reduce penalties for alcohol violations; lower insurance premiums; improve customer service and satisfaction; and promote community safety.

ast week, the United States Postal Service joined local delegates and community leaders to honor a fallen FDNY hero in a virtual dedication ceremony.

On Dec. 3, 2020, legislation to designate the Floral Park Post Office building located at 35 Tulip Ave., in Floral Park, as the “Lieutenant Michael R. Davidson Post Office Building” was signed into law by President Trump. This legislation was introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by New York Congresswoman Kathleen Rice (D-Garden City).

Davidson, who was a Floral Park resident, was killed after responding to a five-alarm fire in a Harlem building that was being used as a movie set for an upcoming Ed Norton and Bruce Willis film Motherless Brooklyn.

Davidson joined the FDNY in May of 2003 and was assigned to Engine Company 69 in Harlem. On the night of his death on March 22, 2018, he responded to a blaze in a basement of a five-story building on St. Nicholas Avenue and West 149th Street. According to fire officials at the

He was later found unconscious from severe smoke inhalation and was taken to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries leaving, behind his wife and four young children.

The virtual dedication ceremony took place on the third anniversary of Davidson’s death. In attendance at the ceremony were Congresswoman Rice, former Floral Park Mayor Dominick Longobardi, Monsignor John

Delendick, Archbishop Molloy High School President Richard Karsten and Archbishop Molloy High School Chorus Director Jim Sheenan, Long Island Postal District Manager Frank Calabrese, Floral Park Postmaster Harold Bonilla, and members of Davidson’s family.

“My district on Long Island has a long and proud tradition of service in the New York City Fire Department,” Rice said back in 2019 when she first introduced the legislation. “For generations, young men and women from

New York’s Fourth Congressional District have joined the FDNY following in the footsteps of their parents and grandparents. They choose a life of service and sacrifice, and dedicate their lives to protect others.

Lieutenant Michael Davidson was a part of that tradition.”

Rice added that every time people pass the Lieutenant Michael R. Davidson Post Office in Floral Park, people will remember the way Davidson lived his life: with honor, love for his family, and service to his community.

Herricks HS Journal Wins Top Honor Herricks High School’s literary journal, OPUS (Issue 62), has achieved a First Class distinction in the 2020 National Council of Teachers of English’s Recognizing Excellence in Art and Literary Magazines program. This is the highest honor that can be obtained in the REALM competition, which additionally presents Superior, Excellent and Merit ratings.

OPUS is a product of the high school’s Literature Club, advised by teacher Alan Semerdjian. Special acknowledgment goes to the publication’s student leaders from last year, who graduated last June. They include Editors-in-Chief

‘Champing At The Bit’ To Open Center

o glance at the Senior Citizens of Westbury Center’s calendar from March 2020, the last month it was fully open, is to peer at those pre-pandemic days we now call “normal.” It also gives insight into what the virus has done to seniors. For it was filled with activities that kept them engaged and entertained, in addition to providing a daily meal. COVID-19 has been doubly cruel to senior citizens: infecting and killing them at higher rates, and inflicting the burden of isolation and loneliness.

Paul Ragusa-Schweitzer knows this intimately, having seen the faces and heard the voices of desperation, especially when it came to securing vaccination appointments. He succeeded Maureen Droge as director of the non-profit last September, bringing an impressive resume of social service and organizational management experience and civic engagement.

He was hired just in time to participate in the ribbon cutting for the refurbished Westbury Community center, owned by the village, a major funder of the organization. Much of the decades-old interior has been redone, thanks to moneys the village had been granted via the state’s Downtown Revitalization Initiative. The building is also informally known as the Senior Center.

“My job has been to get a handle on the finances and the operations of the center without really seeing how it actually runs in a non-pandemic environment,” according to Ragusa-Schweitzer.

One of the few upsides of the center being closed for in-person activities, he

stated, “is that it’s allowed me to make some needed updates and changes in preparation for reopening. Not only in terms of health and safety issues, but also things that needed to be done from a technological perspective. Kind of bringing things more into the 21st century in terms of processes and procedures.”

He added, “When I came in we got some new computers. I put everybody on the cloud. We put in [Microsoft] Office 365 so everybody could work remotely. It’s necessary to work remotely now at least part of the time.”

Staff members and volunteers were also coordinating with the county and local non-profits, making deliveries of food and other necessities. They assured that seniors weren’t feeling isolated and got help they needed.

The pleasant late summer and fall weather also provided opportunities for limited outdoor activities such as workshops and presentations. The staff added games such as bingo at these events.

The Center also partnered with Long Island Cares and Island Harvest to give away some non-perishable foods and produce.

“In October, we also started a grab-and-go lunch program,” RagusaSchweitzer said. “Normally we provide lunch five days a week in here, subsidized by the county. Grab-and go [lunches] made sure they had the opportunity to have one good nutritious meal every day and to get out while the weather was still nice. And see each other and see the staff. We would bring the lunches out to them.”

challenge. And we’ll continue to offer virtual things—that will help us serve more members during the day. And of course, we’ll bring the [in-center] lunch program back, though at first it will have to be limited.”

He said that in normal times 60 to 70 people typically ate lunch every day because they were already at the center.

“One of the biggest draws, aside from the lunch and the programs, was the opportunity to hang out and play bridge and mah-jongg or just socialize

“The biggest disappointment for our members is not to be able to see one another.” he said. “They come here for class and activities, but they love to socialize.”

Zoom Time

The director said there is a group of about 60 seniors who are participating in the Zoom virtual classes and workshops. The Center offers many of the same pre-pandemic activities: strengthening exercises, yoga, meditation, a reflective writing class and book club.

“What kind of programs will you like to introduce?” he was asked.

“We’d keep the same programs we are doing now, but I would like to implement things that are hands-on and lend themselves to being together with the instructor,” he replied. “We’ll do more of those kinds of things when we come back in-person. We normally have ceramics and sculpture and painting and jewelry-making. Things that are very hands-on.”

He continued, “We’re always looking for new ideas and new instructors who can bring something fresh to the center that fits with our mission.

opportunities for socialization. To keep everybody physically, spiritually and mentally growing and fit. We’re always looking for people who have something to offer.”

Ragusa-Schweitzer is aided by Assistant Director Andrea Padinha, Homebound Service Coordinator Patricia Lent and volunteers.

“There are a lot of mysteries and unknowns about how we’re going to reopen,” he admitted. “I think it will be a gradual thing with limited participation, and scheduling things will be a

with each other,” he said. “They are chomping at the bit—I hear from the members every day. ‘I miss coming. I can’t wait till we come back’ they tell me.”

Like many, Ragusa-Schweitzer is hopeful for better days, but also can’t put 2020 easily behind. Amidst the national tragedy of COVID-19, he lost husband Neil Schweitzer at 51 in October to non-virus causes.

“It’s been horrible,” he admitted.

“Thank God for this job. I love the center. I love my staff and the members.”

Busy ‘Fall’ Season At Westbury Westbury School District Athletic Director Doric Capsis said that the high school has 10 teams participating in the fall season, which began March 1 and runs through April 21.: Varsity and jayvee football, varsity and jayvee boys soccer, cross country, varsity girls swimming, varsity and jayvee girls volleyball, varsity girls soccer and varsity cheerleading.

“Our jayvee boys soccer team is off to an auspicious start with 4 wins and no losses. They just defeated Massapequa 3-1 on March 23,” Capsis said.

The leading goal scorer for the

jayvee is freshman Edwin Escobar with six goals in the first four games.

The team is also led by captains Luis Romero and Heri Cruz and coached by high school math teacher Nick Monioudis.

The boys varsity soccer teams also defeated Massapequa 2-0 on March 22, handing the defending Nassau AA champion its first loss of the season. The team record is currently 2-1-1.

The girls volleyball team is also doing well, with a 3-1 record.

As plans for a national search for a superintendent for Westbury Union Free School District gets into high gear, I have been having spirited verbal exchanges with friends of mine regarding the necessity for such a search at this time. Some are saying that it is imprudent for the board of education to agree to such a search, which will cost the district almost $20,000, when the current superintendent Eudes Budhai is doing such a fine job, referencing a recent change.org petition that garnered more than 1,500 signatures urging the board to renew his contract.

Others wonder why a national search is conducted every time the district changes superintendent.

If my recollection is correct, this is only the second time in more than 20 years that a

in the interests of transparency and legislative oversight, the department should publish annual reports and accompanying data on the department’s website regarding the EIS program, while respecting the privacy of the officers utilizing the program.

As a necessary corollary of the foregoing plan amendment, I respectfully request that the implementation of the requirements of the EIS program including the 360-degree review immediately be added to the subjects to be negotiated with the Police Benevolent Association as part of the ongoing collective bargaining process.

national search for a superintendent will be conducted in this district, that being the search for Dr. Constance Clark-Snead, who replaced Dr. Robert Pickney, whose contract was not renewed by the board of education when it expired in 1999. Pickney was hired by the district in the summer of 1993, replacing Dr. Charles Swensen.

When Clark left the district in July 2010, assistant superintendent of Business & Management Services Dr. Mary Lagnado was appointed as interim superintendent, and was subsequently granted a five-year contract in 2013.

However, she was forced to resign her position in 2017 with one year left on her contract. Board members split 4-3 to accept her resignation, and agreed to a payout to her of more than $700,000.

According to Board President Robert Troiano, Budhai, whose contract expires June 30, 2021, is encouraged to allow the board to consider him as a candidate through the selection process since the aim is to assure the school district that the most capable applicant is hired, which will serve his interest as well.

Although I fully understand these points of view, I am a bit ambivalent as to how foolproof national searches are; “insiders” versus “outsiders” so to speak. Are we tempted to cross a stream to find water? Since it is relatively easy for a new person to step on known landmines, is it more prudent to stick with home-grown candidates that know the politics and the climate, and perhaps build on the weaknesses that such individuals may display? How

trusting are glowing recommendations that often accompany outside candidates?

Trust can also be important for an outsider coming into a district full of total strangers; will precious time and resources be wasted during the “getting to know you” process vs. someone who can “hit the ground running”? Is the district satisfied with the “bang for the buck” from the precious national search?

These are thoughts that come to my mind while not discounting the benefits that may be gained from someone with a different mindset; a candidate who sees things from a different perspective, exceptional skill set, and no axe to grind—not beholding to local powerbrokers or special interests. Hence my ambivalence.

From the onset of when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, the Legislative Majority has made the health, safety and protection of those who live and work in Nassau County a top priority. Throughout the pandemic, the Legislature continued to meet and pass emergency measures and funding. Our offices have assisted thousands of residents and our Majority has advocated for policies and programs to help those

struggling as a result of this deadly disease.

Sadly, here in Nassau County more than 3,000 lives have been lost to COVID-19.

To honor and remember those who have perished from the pandemic, the Legislative Majority recently spearheaded two initiatives.

The first involved unanimously passing legislation to establish a permanent memorial at Eisenhower Park with a goal of having the memorial in place later

this year. That bill has been sent to the county executive for her signature. Secondly, a vigil service attended by governmental and religious leaders was held on March 22 to remember those our county has lost.

Eisenhower Park is a fitting location to create a memorial to remember and mourn the loved ones who succumbed to COVID-19. We can never take away the pain that the

Giving Up or Giving In For Christians, Lent is the 40-day period prior to Easter where they reflect on their baptism and how well they’ve been living that out. Traditionally, three acts of Lent are prayer, almsgiving and fasting. Many people equate fasting with “giving up” something for Lent.

Sometimes it’s a favorite food.

Sometimes an unhealthy food.

Sometimes a bad habit.

The reasons for fasting or “giving up something” are varied. Sometimes it’s an exercise in self-control. Some use it as a time of self-betterment. For others fasting from something gives them extra funds to be used for almsgiving—that is, charitable donations. On a spiritual level, the longing for a latte might translate into a prayer: “God may I hunger for you even more than I thirst for my morning coffee.”

This kind of giving up is different from giving in.

With all the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, people had just given in to the circumstances they found themselves

is empowering. When we choose to give up a habit or a food or an activity, we fast from these things as a means to accomplishing other things.

If I give up reckless driving, I accomplish a safer neighborhood. If I give up binge watching TV, I gain time to do something to make life better, either for myself or others. If I fast from something I am addicted to, I gain freedom.

Each time I put on my mask I pray a line from Psalm 141: “Lord, place a guard over my mouth, a sentry at the door of my lips.” In that prayer I mean two things: First, I’m praying that I do not infect anyone should I be carrying the coronavirus and I pray that I don’t breathe it in. And second, I’m praying that the mask also is a sign that I won’t let any bad speech leave my mouth. No cursing, no gossip, no negative

comments, no harassing, etc.

The mask then becomes part of a deliberate way of living and loving rather than some dreaded resignation to what I’m told to do.

The choice is ours if only we see that there is a choice between giving up and giving in. Why not try this week to reexamine the protocols that have felt oppressive and reimagine them in terms of choices to love?

For Women’s History Month, the Plainview Water District would like to honor two members of its management team that play crucial roles in the oversight and management of the District. Commissioner Amanda Field

and Business Manager Dina Scott both have important responsibilities in the district’s day-to-day operations and have helped to lead the direction of many of the district’s advances over the past couple of years.

Greenvale Civic Association president John Fabio presented a $2,000 donation from members of the Greenvale Civic Association to the Long Island Cares organization, which supports Sabaa Khan, a freshman from Division Avenue High School in the Levittown Public Schools, made her mark in the coding world by taking home first place with her team in the level one category of a virtual CodeA-Thon, sponsored by the nonprofit, We Connect The Dots. Students from grades 8 to 12 were encouraged to sign up for the competition, which did not require any prior coding experience.

The competition, which featured three levels of difficulty, took place during the course of three days and challenged students to create websites that would offer a solution to a societal issue.

Khan decided to participate in the competition for fun and had no prior experience in coding but thought it would be a great learning opportunity.

She prepared for the Code-A-Thon by participating in three separate training classes lasting three hours each. Her team consisted of an eighth grader, a high school freshman and a mentor.

Khan spent approximately 25 hours researching a topic for her team, creating a PowerPoint and coding her team’s website.

“We created a project that would address and offer a solution to a global problem aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals,” she said. “Due

to the pandemic, the vaccines are in great demand. It is crucial to store the vaccine properly before administering. We came up with the idea to create a vaccine cooler that would keep vaccines cool for a long span of time. The name of our website was VCFA—“Vaccines Coolers For All.” As a first place winner, Khan was awarded a projector from We Connect The Dots. The Levittown Public Schools congratulates her on this outstanding achievement.

Staci Kolinsky, art teacher at Lee Avenue Elementary School in Hicksville, was awarded more than $1,000 in art supplies for her students, thanks to Donors Choose.

Donors Choose is a nonprofit that allows individuals to donate to classroom projects. The organization’s mission is to ensure students in every community have the tools they need for a great education.

Due to not being able to share art supplies because of the pandemic, Kolinsky will be providing hundreds of individual oil pastels and watercolor sets to students to help increase their artistic capabilities.

A schoolwide commitment to kindness inspired two fifth graders from Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District to start a fundraiser to help other children.

Ryan Hirschhorn and Tyler Uberti partnered up to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital to support kids undergoing cancer treatment.

Hirschhorn and Uberti launched the Virtual Polar Plunge for a Cure and through mid-March had raised 85 percent of their $5,000 goal. Throughout the winter, participants could submit a video doing their own polar plunge, from jumping into a nearby body of water, to taking an ice bath to diving into snow, then challenge three family members or friends to do the same.

Videos were posted on social media with the hashtag #kfkpolarplunge, and all participants were asked to make a donation of any size to St. Jude.

The boys are hosting their fundraiser through the Kids for Kids Foundation, which raises money for organizations that support children and families struggling with medical challenges. A friend of Hirschhorn’s dad works with the organization, which is how they found out about it.

Hirschorn and Uberti are members of the Kids for Kids Junior Committee.

When doing research to select a charity, Hirschorn and Uberti learned about St. Jude and how it is funded entirely through donations, so families are not burdened with any medical costs. They noted that a $10 donation buys a meal for a St. Jude Family, while $500 can provide a platelet transfusion.

“We don’t want to think about ourselves,” Uberti said. “We want to think about the people who need the help.”

The boys say that the culture of kindness at Birch Lane helped spark their interest in helping others.

Every day, students pass by the Random Acts of Kindness tree in the lobby. Hirschorn’s teacher, Jeanne Brustmeyer, gives each student an index card and punches a hole in it for demonstrating kindness and respect.

In Uberti’s class, teacher Lauren Marocchi fills a kindness jar with the good deeds her students do.

The boys explained that kindness is important because that’s where charitable acts start. Visit www.kids forkidsnyc.org for more information about their fundraiser.

“We want these kids at St. Jude to feel better and be treated as best as they can,” Hirschhorn said. “That’s what this is all about.”

Congressman Tom Suozzi recently announced that Open Style Lab, a nonprofit from Great Neck that creates functional, wearable and stylish clothing for people with disabilities, will receive a $35,000 federal grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA).

The grant money will be used by Open Style Lab to support an online fashion education program that

helps people with disabilities create accessible and stylish clothing. To do this, Open Style Lab will offer online lectures with accessibility and fashion partners, as well as a comprehensive video library to help participants design wearable solutions for their own dressing challenges. The NEA regularly funds nonprofit arts organizations on a project-specific basis. Awards typically range from $10,000 to $100,000.

Great Neck School District Election Date Changed

he State Education Department has approved an appeal from the Great Neck Public Schools to change the date of this year’s school district election and budget vote.

According to New York State law, school districts are required to hold elections on the third Tuesday in May. This year, the election date of May 18 conflicts with the observance of the holiday Shavuot, so the Board of Education requested to change the election date to May 11. As a result, the Great Neck School District Election and Budget Vote will take place on Tuesday, May 11, from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Preliminary Budget

The 2021–22 preliminary budget can be found on the district website (www.greatneck.k12.ny.us/ budget21-22) and in the Great Neck Library, all branches.

Budget Meetings And Adoption Based on the suspension of the Open Meetings provision of the Public Officer’s Law, and for the health and safety of our community, budget meetings will be held virtually via Zoom webinar. Links to these meetings will be posted on the homepage of the district website. Residents are encouraged to virtually attend the budget meetings online and to respond to the preliminary budget.

Final decisions on the budget will not be made until the Board listens to the community’s comments.

That is until the release of Boogie, the directorial debut of chef/author/ food personality Eddie Huang, who also has a small acting role in his film. Taylor Takahashi, plays the title character, Alfred “Boogie” Chin, a Chinese-American high school basketball player angling for a path to the NBA via a college athletic scholarship. Shot in various New York City locales, Huang’s project may be a coming-of-age story, but the narrative is driven by intergenerational conflicts shaped by the cultural dynamics of an immigrant family. And while Takahashi is fourth-generation Japanese and not Taiwanese like his character, Boogie’s personality and mindset is one he can relate to.

representation to the hardwood “I grew up very similar to Boogie and while I don’t come from an immigrant family, there were a lot of parallels with the character when it comes to my life,” he said. “When I was 16 to 18 in high school, basketball was a huge part of my life. Through similar adolescent situations, although not the same, they were in the same ballpark.

For me, it was tapping into my younger self when I was a little more arrogant and on edge. I was a little bit of a rebel in school. My attitude was similar to Boogie’s—I felt like the world was against me and I wouldn’t accept people’s help. There were a lot of people there to help and ultimately, I had to figure that out in life. It was very interesting to go through my own life experience that is a parallel to Boogie’s.”

Boogie is a project of firsts.

In addition to this being Huang’s first time behind the camera, it is also Takahashi’s acting debut, a curious turn of events for the Bay Area native who moved to Los Angeles to find work as a personal trainer. Huang, who moved to the West Coast after his 2013 memoir Fresh Off the Boat was turned into a 2015 series of the same name, met Takahashi when both were playing in a San Gabriel recreational basketball league.

The two quickly formed an off-court friendship

After the movie got the green light in 2019, Huang spent that time trying to find someone who had both acting experience and basketball skills, eventually offering the lead to his friend. With only three hours to prepare before shooting an audition tape to send over to Focus Features executives, Takahashi recalls not feeling any pressure.

“I just did what I felt comfortable with, because I didn’t necessarily want the part,” he said. “I knew if I wanted it too much—or wanted it at all—then I wouldn’t be able to play Boogie in the right way.”

After accepting the role, Takahashi flew to New York from the West Coast to start shooting. Pushing through his jet lag was a challenge, particularly given the grueling shooting schedule that included a normal 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. slate as well as basketball scenes shot from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Manhattan’s Lower East Side when the

production crew could gain access to city courts. Adding to that was Takahahsi trying to find some degree of comfort in front of the camera.

“I remember my first day—it was my only scene,” he said. “It was when I met [basketball agent] Melvin and I slapped his hand at the restaurant. I had one line—‘Just shut up and pay me my money.’ I was nervous as hell. I was in my trailer for two hours and walked back and forth looking in the mirror a bunch of times and talked myself up. But after that first scene, I got very

comfortable very fast. I felt support from our actors and director to the producers.”

Tackling the rudimentary Chinese Boogie spoke in the film also proved to be a challenge for Takahashi, who has a cursory knowledge of Japanese and is self-admittedly bad at learning new languages. He eventually reached a believable point true to the character where Huang said, “He got to the level where his Chinese at least sounded like AmericanChinese teenager Chinese.”

“The day before we started production, we had our

translator Min work with me leading up to the days for scenes that had me speaking Chinese,” Takahashi said.

“I was on the phone with her and she’d come to my apartment, where I spent hours trying to really get it.

While it was a lot of trying to get the [nuance] of the language, it was mostly trying to hammer out my lines and try to ingrain them into my head. Trying to remember the line and the different language it was spoken in was pretty difficult. But it didn’t have to be perfect because I was first-generation, making me the ABC [AmericanBorn Chinese] here. It was more about reflecting the character.”

Released at a time when the United States is experiencing an extraordinarily high number of anti-Asian racist incidents, Takahashi has been shaken by what has been going on. Further, he hopes Boogie succeeds in providing some kind of bridge of cultural understanding and acceptance.

“What’s great about this movie is the relatability factor [in which] I think a lot of people see themselves [through this lens],” he said. “It doesn’t have to be basketball or New York. They see a version of themselves in Boogie and they either know a Boogie or have been through a similar situation as a Boogie. I hope Boogie brings people together in the right way and gives a representation of the Asian community that can be their beacon for a little bit of hope.”

POLICE REPORT Sexual Abuse Arrest In Seaford

The Special Victims Squad reports the arrest of a Seaford man that occurred on March 19 at 3 a.m. in Seaford for sexual abuse.

According to detectives, a joint investigation was conducted between the Nassau County Special Victims Squad, the Hazelwood Police Department in Missouri and the Federal Bureau of Investigations Crimes Against Children Division.

The investigation led to the arrest of 37-year-old defendant Jesse Vargas at his place of residence.

In 2011, the defendant while acting as a youth pastor at the Incredible Journey to Christianity retreat in the State of Michigan, met a 13-year-old female juvenile. On Thursday, June 20, 2013, two years later, the defendant arranged to have the now-15-year-old female juvenile visit his place of residence in Seaford, where he engaged in a sexual act. The investigation is ongoing.

Vargas is charged with second-degree sexual abuse, third-degree criminal sex act and endangering the welfare of a child. He was arranged on

March 19 in Mineola.

Detectives request that if anyone feels they may have been a victim of a similar incident to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800244-8477, the Nassau County Special Victims Squad at 516-573-4022, or call 911. All callers will remain anonymous.

Fatal Accident In North Massapequa Eighth Squad detectives report the details of a fatal auto accident that occurred on March 20 at 2:25 p.m. in North Massapequa.

According to detectives, while operating his 2010 Hyundai southbound on the Seaford Oyster Bay Expressway, the driver, a 64-year-old male, left the roadway at the exit 5 off ramp, overturned and struck a tree. As a result of the collision the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim’s name is being withheld at this time and the investigation into the accident continues.

POLICE REPORT arrest of a Garden City man for an incident that occurred on March 21 at 4:20 p.m. in Uniondale.

According to officers, while operating his vehicle at the intersection of Westbury Boulevard and Oak Street, 31-year-old Ryan Marrianan left the roadway and struck a chain link fence located in the parking lot of 300 Oak St. Upon police arrival, officers observed Marrinan behaving highly erratic and an investigation revealed he was under the influence of a controlled substance. Officers placed him under arrest and Marrinan became combative. During the struggle, an officer suffered a physical injury to his hand and elbow causing substantial pain. The officer was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

The defendant was transported to a local hospital for minor injuries due to the accident, where he became physically combative with the attending hospital staff. Officers were required to restrain the defendant who was eventually subdued. As a result, an officer sustained an injury to his wrist causing pain and requiring medical treatment.

A subsequent investigation found

Marrinan to be in possession of a white powdery substance believed to be ketamine.

Marrinan is charged with two counts of second-degree assault, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and DWAI Drugs. He was arraigned when medically practical.

Man Jumps Out Of Hospital Window And Dies The Homicide Squad reports the details of a fatal aided that occurred on March 22 at 3:40 a.m. in East Meadow.

According to detectives, Third Precinct Officers responded to the Nassau University Medical Center, located at 2201 Hempstead Tpke., for a male laying on the ground with serious injuries. The 34-year-old male victim was pronounced deceased by a Nassau County Police Medic. The preliminary investigation shows the male broke a window on the eighth floor before jumping and suffering self-inflicted fatal wounds.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld at this time pending family notification. The investigation is ongoing.

Herb Ravitz passed away on March 11th, 2021, at age 91.

Born in America to immigrant parents, Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Sarah, his beloved wife Florence, and his younger brothers Gerald and Samuel.

He is survived by his three children, Michael, Wendy, and Daniel, and by grandchildren Jordan, Charles, Zachary, Emma, Hailey, and Noah. Herb was a graduate of DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx, and the City College of New York. He earned a BS degree in Chemistry and served in the Army Chemical Corp in Maryland during the 1950’s. After several post graduate jobs in the chemical industry, Herb founded Universal Preserv-a-chem. UPI is now a second generation

family owned distributor of additives and ingredients for the food, pharma and personal care industries.

Herb was a larger than life character to all who knew him. He was an entrepreneur and a maverick; a devoted caregiver to his then ailing wife Florence; and a staunch supporter of Israel and associated Jewish charities.

He had a passion for trying to make the world a better place, and took particular pride in having funded trips to Israel for Jewish youth. We will miss Herb’s dedication, commitment, passion, and most of all, his love. We grieve today, but will celebrate his legacy forever. OBITUARIES OYSTER BAY Gloria Taylor Yingling, 87, of Salem, OR, died on Jan. 31. She was a graduate of Oyster Bay High School and the University of Pennsylvania.

Gloria was an assistant manager at K-Mart North in Salem for many years and enjoyed staying in touch with family and relatives, reading, politics and cooking; caring for her four-legged companions; keeping up her property; and watching NBA games. Sylvia Gelb

of Rockport, Local Editor, Writer, Artist Sylvia Gelb, 74, a former editor of college texts and other scholarly and technical publications for several Boston area publishers, died on March 14, 2021, after a sudden illness. A resident of Rockport, Mass., she had, in retirement, won recognition locally as an artist, exhibiting in North Shore galleries and earning awards for her pastel landscapes and still lifes.

Born in New York City and raised on Long Island, Sylvia was an outstanding student and lifelong scholar. She graduated magna cum laude in mathematics from Brooklyn College (CUNY). A member of Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Mu Epsilon, a math honor society, she also won an award for her writing and received a Regent’s scholarship.

Sylvia was known for toting a book wherever she went, even setting up a bookstand at the dinner table as a child, according to her sister, Carol. Her 30-year career in book publishing began upon graduation from college with editorial positions at W.H. Sadler and then Random House in New York. In Boston, she continued her work in publishing, editing college texts for Harper and Row, Addison-Wesley, and Allyn & Bacon, where she met her husband, Robert. Later, she applied her writing and editorial skills at electronic publishing and management consulting firms.

In retirement, Sylvia discovered new outlets for her talents and wide-ranging interests. She pursued a passion for art that had begun when she was a child creating drawings for stories.

On Cape Ann she practiced life drawing at the Rockport Art Association and became a highly skilled painter as a member of The Pastel Circle, winning prizes at the Danvers Art Association and Topsfield Fair. Her paintings express her fascination with the colors and geometries of the natural world, as they are transformed by light and perspective. Despite a crushing schedule during the past year, which involved full-time care of her husband at home, she pursued a new interest in music, teaching herself to play piano.

She is survived by her husband, Robert Hope; her sister, Carol Gelb Sterin; two step-daughters, Monica Hope and Rachel Hope; nephew Steven Sterin, his wife Ellen, and their daughters Ashley and Kate; nephew Gregg Sterin and wife Kerri; niece Jodi Sterin Wilhelm, her husband Devin Wilhelm, and their children Ethan, Jillian, Sydney, and Caroline. She was predeceased by her parents, Sidney and Pauline Gelb of New York City.

Sylvia and Robert traveled in retirement, making trips to Italy and the Canadian Rockies. They enjoyed opera performances broadcast from New York’s Metropolitan Opera, and regularly attended college football games with friends. Robert’s two daughters, Monica and Rachel, who found an attentive friend in Sylvia, organized a large gathering to honor her 65th birthday.

In all her relationships, Sylvia displayed an unfailing sense of duty and responsibility, care for others, and an endless intellectual curiosity. She is remembered for her incisive mind and her exacting sense of fairness. For all her talents and accomplishments, Sylvia was unassuming and modest, a pleasure to know. She was kind and generous, with a ready sense of humor, and a brilliant smile that lit her entire face. She found great joy in the natural world, frequently walking at Halibut Point to spot birds and listen to the sea.

To vote on the appropriation of the necessary funds to meet the estimated expenditures of the Manhasset Public Library for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2021 (“Proposition 3”), which shall be presented in substantially the following form: WHEREAS, the budget of the Manhasset Public Library for fiscal year 2020-21, as approved by the Library’s Board and voters, required collecting a tax levy of $5,403,412; and WHEREAS, the Manhasset Union Free School District, in certifying the amount of taxes to be levied on behalf of the Library during fiscal year 2020-21, mistakenly omitted the sum of $1,022,625 due to a clerical error; and WHEREAS, the amount of Library taxes billed and collected from Library taxpayers for fiscal year 2020-21was $1,022,625 less than the tax levy authorized, which could impact the Library’s tax levy limit in future years; and WHEREAS, during fiscal year 2020-21, the School District advanced to the Library, from School District funds, the amount of said shortfall, in order to enable the Library to fund its duly authorized 2020/21 budget despite such shortfall; and WHEREAS, the School District and Library have pursued special NYS legislation to authorize actions to correct the $1,022,625 shortfall in the Library’s 2020-21 actual, as compared to authorized, tax levy, and the impact on the Library’s tax levy limit in future years; and WHEREAS, authorization of the Library 2021-22 budget and tax levy must address the possibility that such special legislation may not be enacted by the time of the budget vote; NOW, THEREFORE, be it RESOLVED, that the amounts of $4,483,269 for public library purposes, and $1,023,000 for Library debt service, are hereby provided for fiscal year 2021-22, so that the total amount of $5,506,269 shall be raised by tax upon the taxable property of the Library district, and shall be levied in one sum for the purposes outlined in the Library budget, and be it further RESOLVED, that if special legislation to correct the School District’s clerical error with respect to the Library’s tax levy for fiscal year 202021 is not enacted prior to the Library 2021-22 budget vote, then there shall be added to the Library’s aforementioned levy of $5,506,269 for fis-

cal year 2021-22 the amount of $1,022,625, being the amount of both the shortfall in the Library’s 2020-21 actual collected tax levy, and the resulting advance made by the School District to the Library, for reimbursement to the School District for such advance, resulting in a total levy for the Library’s fiscal year 2021-22 of $6,528,894, which sum exceeds the statutory tax levy limit for fiscal year 2021-22, and which sum shall be raised by tax upon the taxable property of the Library district, and shall be levied in one sum for the purposes outlined in the Library budget; provided, however, that for the purpose of calculating the Library tax levy limit for the 2022-23 fiscal year, the amount of the Library tax levy for fiscal year 2021-22 shall be deemed to be $5,506,269, regardless of whether the Library’s actual tax levy for fiscal year 2021-22 is $5,506,269, as contemplated in the preceding resolution, or $6,528,894, as contemplated herein.

POR CUANTO, la autorización del presupuesto y el gravamen fiscal de la biblioteca para 2021-2022 debe tener en cuenta la posibilidad de que dicha legislación especial no se haya promulgado para el momento de la votación del presupuesto.

sin embargo, a efectos de calcular el límite del gravamen fiscal de la biblioteca para el año fiscal 2022-2023, se considerará que el monto del gravamen fiscal de la biblioteca para el año fiscal 2021-2022 es de $5,506,269, independientemente de que el gravamen fiscal real de la biblioteca para el año fiscal 2021-2022 sea de $5,506,269, como se contempla en la resolución anterior, o de $6,528,894, como se contempla en el presente documento.

Paige Matarazzo

A

multi-year medal winner on the National Latin Exam and participant in the National Latin Vocabulary and Roman Civilization Exams, Paige Matarazzo is a World Language Honor Society member and tutor. She also currently serves as president of the Latin Club, planning meetings and events from start to finish.

Matarazzo rose to the challenge of this school year and her efforts went a long way for members of the Latin Club. She helped to organize the annual Saturnalia celebration and planned and judged its online competitions. Matarazzo is part of a

small cohort of other students who established Long Island E-Certamen organization, which served to continue to foster their love of and interest in Latin while on pause during the COVID-19 crisis. They executed multiple events remotely using online platforms and hosted schools from around the country in a high level of play, writing and asking questions.

In addition to Matarazzo’s success in Latin, she has displayed her leadership and commitment in many other activities. To name a few, she serves as the president of the Economics Club, president of the

UNICEF club and is the co-creator of the Medical Club. Her academic achievements have earned her recognition as a member of the National Honor Society and National Spanish Honor Society. Matarazzo is a compassionate, reliable, and hardworking young lady who is outstanding both in and out of the classroom.

A second police officer arrived on the scene to provide assistance. At this time, the subject fled in the vehicle and struck the second police vehicle.

The subject was traveling northbound on Ring Road and lost control of the vehicle striking the median.

SPORTS Athletic Trainers Save Official’s Life At Game

T

here are times when our abilities are tested and the education we were afforded throughout our academic careers is put to good use.

Saturday, March 20, was one of those times.

During the Farmingdale versus East Meadow varsity football game, Nassau County high school football official Phil LoNigro collapsed during the second quarter of the contest.

Thanks to the training and quick thinking of the athletic trainers also on the field that day, what could have been an unbelievably tragic event emerged as one of inspiration and hope.

On that seemingly ordinary Saturday morning, LoNigro’s heart stopped beating. Farmingdale athletic trainer and alumni Phil Fandale and East Meadow athletic trainer Dan DeSimone did not allow the situation to get the better of them. Instead, they used the training and resources at their fingertips and saved LoNigro’s life.

“It is moments such as these that I am reminded by the community we continuously build upon in the halls and classrooms of our schools,” Farmingdale Superintendent Paul Defendini said. “The odds of two Farmingdale graduates crossing paths is not so far-fetched, but the chances of one saving the other’s life?

Some may call it a coincidence. I am inclined to call it a miracle.”

At this time, Phil LoNigro is still in the hospital undergoing tests, but is said to be doing well.
