Steamboats Make Way For Gold Coast Era Across North Shore
Passengers disembark a steamboat ferry from Rye in Sea Cliff, c.1910 Courtesy of Sea Cliff Village Museum
BY CHRISTY HINKO
Before the railroad began to wind its way through the quaint villages of the North Shore, the major source of transportation was the sidewheel steamboat in the early 1800s. Steamboat service ignited the luxurious and bustling Gold Coast-era of Long Island. Water travel was the only way to get from Manhattan to Long Island. The Brooklyn Bridge would not be built until 1883.
I
n 1827, Dr. Thomas Garvie negotiated with Cornelius Vanderbilt to begin a regular ferry service between his proposed dock facilities at Garvies Point in Glen Cove and Manhattan. The first steamboats evolved from the engineering of Robert Fulton’s 1807 design for the first practical steamboat, the Clermont. The Linnaeus, captained by Elijah Peck, was one of the first recorded steamboats to provide service to the North Shore in 1829. The Linnaeus was a small steamboat in comparison to the size of the ships that would
eventually operate on the line. She left Glen Cove every morning at 6:30 a.m., stopping at New Rochelle at 7:30 a.m., Whitestone at 8:30 a.m., before finally arriving at the Fulton Market slip. She return-voyaged every afternoon at 3 p.m. Fare one-way was a mere three shillings (one shilling would equal a small fraction of today’s penny). For the first time, there was reliable and convenient travel from Manhattan to Long Island. Before the arrival of steamboat service, travel by water had been by sloop, a one-masted sailboat, which was much slower than steam, dependent on wind, tide, weather and
was far less dependable. The impact of steamboat service to the North Shore was immediately noticeable. Social gatherings ramped up, agricultural trade and mail service increased. With increased steamboat service from Manhattan, North Shore communities began to see civic, cultural and social organizations (debating societies, literary circles, musical and agricultural societies) begin to establish, mimicking similar organizations in New York City. A painting of the Seawanhaka steamer by James Bard.
Steamboats Make Way For Gold Coast Era Across North Shore
Seawanhaka The Seawanhaka steamboat served the communities of Glen Cove, Sea Cliff and Roslyn with dependable daily ferry service to Manhattan in the mid-1800s. She was one of the fastest ships on the Sound and widely respected. On June 28, 1880, the famous ship caught fire on a return trip to Long Island, resulting in the death of dozens of passengers. One of the notable passengers aboard included William R. Grace, a wealthy industrialist who lived in Great Neck with his wife, Lillius. Grace was elected as the first Irish-American Catholic mayor of New York City in 1880. During his second term, he received the Statue of Liberty as a gift from France. Grace was saved from the fateful Seawanhaka disaster, by heeding Captain Charles Smith’s warning not to jump until he had beached the steamboat on a shoal between Ward’s and Randall’s islands. Captain Smith, who remained at the helm of his ship aflame, died a year later from the effects of the disaster. Before his death, residents of the North Shore, many of whom had commuted regularly to Manhattan aboard the Seawanhaka, presented Smith with a cash offering in appreciation of his selfless action on the day of the disaster. Among the grateful contributors there were many well-to-do people who would regularly take the Seawanhaka to fashionable North Shore resort locales like Glen Cove.
STEAMBOAT from page 3A es along the coast erected their first hotels, resorts, taverns, clam bars and oyster houses. The arrival of steamboat service encouraged wealthy Manhattan businessmen to purchase North Shore estates as their summer homes, while still being able to commute back to the city to manage their business affairs. The Pratts, Morgans, Woolworths and Guggenheims, all took homes near steamboat landings. In 1873, when the Sea Cliff Hotel was nearly complete, a new line of steamboats, including the T. V. Arrowsmith, made two trips a day to Manhattan. Fare was 35 cents and commuter books were available for frequent travelers. More than 40 steamboats worked the line from Manhattan to the North Shore over the course of time, making stops in Whitestone, Great Neck, Sands Point, Roslyn, Sea Cliff, Glenwood Landing and Glen Cove. Some of the notable steamboats which had graced the shores of the island, and their years of service, included: • Linnaeus, 1829 • Croton, 1852 • George Law, 1852-1895 • Glen Cove, 1854-1861 (served as Confederate Troops transport, was burned and sunk in the James River during the Civil War) • Long Island (burned during the Civil War) • General Sedgwick, 1862-1902 • Jesse Hoyt, 1862-1889 • T.V. Arrowsmith, 1861-1910 • City of Hudson, 1864-1889 • Flushing • Statesman • Fairfield • Nimrod • Westchester • Sun • American Eagle • Norwalk • Mayflower • Island City • Stamford • Nantasket
• Wyandotte • Orient • Sagamore, ended in 1916 • D.H. Martin • Rye Cliff, 1911-1918 (reconstructed from the car ferry General Knox and primarily used for auto transport, burned at Sea Cliff south dock; the wreckage remains are approximately 200 yards off the west shore south of Dock Hill Park in Sea Cliff) • Seawanhaka, 1866-1880 (burned tragically on a return trip to the North Shore) • Idlewild, 1876-1901 During the Civil War period (April 12, 1861 – May 9, 1865), the government commandeered nearly all of the steamboats for troops, supplies, food and ammunition transport in the south. The Idlewild reestablished service following the loss of the Seawanhaka. Some claim the Idlewild was the last steamboat to service the North Shore, possibly running until 1908, but a news article in the Glen Cove Echo, dated June 3, 1916, announces the final discontinuation of steamboat service to be made by the Sagamore. The Long Island Railroad formed in 1834, but only arrived as far as Glen Cove in 1867, slowly replacing all of the coastal steamboat service. The railroad service did cost more, but was safer. Within a half of a century, rail had replaced the steamboat service. Information courtesy of Great Neck Library Local History Room, Glen Cove Public Library Robert R. Honoring Long Island’s Greatest Generation Republic Aviation built 9,087 P-47 Thunderbolt fighters in East Farmingdale for the U.S. Air Force from 1941-1945.
BY CHRISTY HINKO
Last year, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs reported that there are nearly 300,000 World War II veterans alive and well throughout the entire world; approximately 60,500 of them still reside here on Long Island, across Nassau and Suffolk Counties. This is sharply down from the original estimated 16 million troops that served during the war era.
T
his week, Long Island historian and author Christopher Verga charts the rise of Long Island and its role in the second world war with his new book World War II Long Island: The Homefront in Nassau and Suffolk. “Documenting these veterans’ experiences accurately perseveres their legacy for the generations to come,” Verga said. He added, “A soldier can face two deaths and one of the two is the death of being forgotten.” Long Island was transformed from a pastoral rural community to a modern suburban behemoth by playing an integral role in the homefront of World War II. Dozens of Nazi spies infiltrated industry throughout the island and communicated industrial secrets back to Germany as the FBI chased them down. “Other factors as to why
this topic is important, is it shapes our basic understanding of our community,” Verga said. “Who we honor, our shared values and our complexities are rooted in the events that followed the war.” Long Island held the record for producing the most fighter planes in the country with the rapid rebirth of its aviation sector. Five distinguished Medal of Honor recipients called the region home. Long Island as we know it was shaped by World War II’s outcome. “Between the years of America’s involvement in the war, the island’s region modernized,” Verga said. “In the span of the war and the decade that followed, the region transformed from light to moderate manufacturing, surrounded by potato fields, to a modern suburbia, with some of the most innovative aircraft industries throughout the country.”
At the close of the war, the United Nations established itself in a weapons factory in Lake Success. The dozens of military men and women who served this country during the Greatest Generation are exponentially dwindling, but are truly living legends. Verga is an instructor of Long Island history and on the foundations of American history at Suffolk Community College, as well as a contributor to the online local news sites Greater Babylon, Greater Bay Shore and Greater Patchogue. His published works include Images of America: Civil Rights Movement on Long Island, Images of America: Bay Shore and Saving Fire Island From Robert Moses. Verga has his educational doctorate from St. John’s University. His dissertation work included Long Island Native Americans and the impact of tribal recognition within their cultural identity.
Letter from the Publisher Welcome to blvd.
A
s we continue to make our way out of this pandemic, I am proud to share another special issue of blvd. with you. This luxury publication features the best of style & fashion, design & decor, entertainment and so much more, all in one place. With the current public health crisis prompting many people to move and change up their living situation, we turn to Safavieh for tips on home staging for the potential upsell. And while this potential lifestyle change has understandably spiked in the past year, most people are making the most of their stay-at-home status and looking to spruce things up. If you’re looking for a refreshing palette, consider adding this year’s Pantone colors, Illuminating (a vibrant yellow) and Ultimate Gray, to your decor. We decode the deeper meaning behind these shades. Greenery has always proven to be a very soothing element to add to your environment and to that end, we have Karen Musgrave of Hicks Nurseries check in to share gardening advice for household plants. Indoor entertainment has become crucial, particularly during the cold weather months. Christy Hinko takes us on a trip to the past when the Long Island Sound was bustling with seafaring activity, much of which centered around packed steamboats bringing daily boatloads of passengers to the North Shore for day excursions and resort activities more than a century ago. Christy continues to stay in her historical groove via her review of local historian Christopher Verga’s latest book, World War II Long Island: The Homefront in Nassau and Suffolk, which highlights our area’s crucial role in this global conflict. Other highlights in this issue are Anthony Murray’s sit-down with Renaissance entertainer Hugh Jackman along with the latest beauty and fragrance trends summarized by beauty editor Caroline Ryan. Our blvd. II lifestyles section also touches on home entertainment and BroadwayHD, a streaming platform that brings archived live theater productions to subscribers. Dave Gil de Rubio sits down with site founders/veteran producers Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley to discuss how the duo are feeding the appetites of live theater-starved fans. For those looking for a libation, we’ve included an overview on the history and tradition behind the Espolon line of tequila. I hope you enjoy blvd. as much as we have enjoyed creating it, and I wish you a refreshing spring season. Angela Susan Anton, Publisher

Transform The Way You Live With Plants BY KAREN MUSGRAVE
W
ith the winter doldrums coming to an end, now is the perfect time to refresh your home and landscape. Take advantage of your square footage and create spaces you can enjoy inside and out with friends and loved ones throughout the year. Outdoor Living
After being cooped up all winter and for most of the past year, many of us are aching for fresh air. Consider updating your outdoor living spaces for year-round use. Adding a firepit or fireplace will extend the time you are able to spend outdoors well into the colder months of spring and fall. Perfect for toasting with friends or enjoying marshmallows with the kids, a fire source will exponentially expand the way you entertain. Include large, comfy chairs with pillows made of weatherproof
fabrics. Candles, a chandelier and a large dining table set the scene for extravagant dinner parties. An outdoor kitchen and bar completes the look and keeps the mess out of the house. Add-on to your existing patio space or work with a landscape designer to create a brand-new entertainer’s dream space. Flowers and plants add instant beauty to outdoor spaces. Start with large decorative planters by the front entryway and continue with addition-
al pottery in the backyard around your patio, pool and sitting areas. In the springtime, planters and garden beds can be filled with gorgeous blooms of tulips, daffodils, heather and pussy willow, among others. In the summer, planters can be transformed with tropical plants such as hibiscus, palm plants and lantana trees.
Include trailing potato vine and wave petunias for a showy look all summer long. In the fall and winter, add pansies, mums, grasses and ornamental cabbage and kale for a harvest feel. Always remember to pay special attention to areas you will regularly see directly from the windows of your house. If possible, also add a garden
bed out of view to use specifically for growing flowers to cut and bring indoors. For privacy, choose evergreen plants such as Leyland cypress, western red cedar or skip laurels. These options will provide you with screening all year long. If you only require privacy in the summer months, try crape myrtles. They bloom mid-summer through fall in shades of white, pink or red. Water features such as fountains, ponds, pools and spas help to ground a space. The sound of running water can cancel out other noises in the neighborhood and provide a calming, vacation-like feel. Extend your swimming season by using a pool heater and solar cover.
out every room of your home. Choose pottery and plants to fit the style and sunlight conditions of each space. Don’t forget to use a saucer underneath each pot to protect your floors. For rooms with bright light, try plants such as the fiddle leaf fig, croton, cacti and ponytail palm. Low light areas would do best with the ZZ plant, snake plant, prayer plant and English ivy. The snake plant is also a wise choice for your bedroom, as it releases oxygen at night.

Beyond A Fresh Coat Of Paint And Simple Decluttering
Safavieh shares home-staging advice BY CHRISTY HINKO
Made popular by television shows such as HGTV’s Designed to Sell, Bravo’s Flipping Out and A&E’s Sell This House, home staging, although has been a real estate tool of the trade for many years, has really found its advantage over the past decade. “Very few people stage [by themselves] because you have to have the products in inventory, but light staging has been done for a long time,” said Michael Yaraghi, president of retail operations for Safavieh. Home staging is the preparation of a house, apartment, condo and even commercial properties, for the real estate marketplace.
S
taging makes a home appealing to potential buyers. The property typically sells quicker and garners more money than an unstaged home. The focus on home stagings most recently are to depersonalize a home, to improve the overall condition of the real estate and even the landscaping of a property. “Homeowners often seek out home staging services to remove their own personal belongings before staging a home to be sold,” Yaraghi said. “They realize that their own taste in decor might turn potential buyers off; their own furni-
ture might be too big or the wrong design; it’s not today’s fashionable products that you see in a magazine or on HGTV or by a designer.” For vacant homes, prop or staging furniture is necessary to create a living space where the buyer can imagine themselves living and also to better understand the sizes of rooms. Existing homeowners can also use Safavieh’s staging service to redesign their own living space and enjoy their home again. Safavieh designers have logged hundreds of redesigns and home stagings from across Long Island and the entire metropolitan area.
“Home staging is all about improving the space,” Yaraghi said. “We want to show a potential buyer what this space looks like finished.” Staging techniques improve appeal to buyers. A staged home looks more welcoming and helps a buyer see the potential of the living space. It is attractive and alluring, boosting the desire to buy the property. “It has to be done, A-to-Z, art on the wall, panels on the windows, mirrors hung, area rugs on the floor, accessories on the tables, books on the shelves, where someone can just walk in and fall in love,” Yaraghi said. It is more than cleaning up and preparing the rooms of a home that is going to market; it is more than just decorating. Home staging stylists consider how to stage the home, also based on the neighborhood and the surrounding market. The purpose of staging is the return on investment. Research states that home staging can reduce a listing’s time on the market by one third to half, and could fetch as much as six to 20 percent more than an empty home or a home not properly staged. “It is difficult for people to imagine how a space will look as a home,” Yaraghi said. “When it’s not complete, you don’t see the big picture.” Properly executed staging leads the eye to attractive features, while down-playing flaws.
“We do everything at Safavieh, every little detail down to the dishes on the table and flowers and books, towels in the bathroom,” Yaraghi said.
The Investment Staging does require an additional investment. There is criticism that buyers pay more money out of pocket for nothing because the staged items are not part of the sale. “Many times, people buy the home with the entire staged contents,” Yaraghi said. “We stage a home for six months; you are only obligated to buy 25 percent of what has been used in the staging.” Designers offer various rates and scales for their design services. Prices for initial consultation and monthly follow-up fees vary and by the size of the property, including the number of rooms being staged can affect the cost. “The costs of home staging are reasonable,” Yaraghi said.
Do You Really Need It “It is definitely very important to stage your home for selling,” Yaraghi said. “I’ve seen people do a partial staging; that’s actually worse than putting nothing.”

Safavieh has staged homes for many notable owners, realtors and developments. One of their local examples are the models at Garvies Point in Glen Cove. “It is difficult to imagine what a place looks like, lived in, without furniture,” Yaraghi said. He explained how the development at Garvies Point faced a challenge of selling several of their empty units; they called Safavieh to stage them. “They showed these apartments for six months and could not sell one; when we staged it, two weeks later, someone bought the apartment that we staged,” Yaraghi said. “They contacted us to do another because the person who bought the staged apartment, purchased all of the staged furnishings. They said, ‘we just want to move in the way that it is’ and paid for the value of the staged furniture. “Conversely, if we have to use what’s already there, it gets more complicated,” Yaraghi said. The staging is more effective, left to the designers, carte blanche.
The Process Safavieh designers, all extensively trained, visit the home, make notes about the space and then incorporate the layout into AutoCAD, a computer-aided design and drafting software before
the furniture and accessory placement plan begins. “The way we do a staging is like you would see in a magazine,” Yaraghi said. “Our name is on it; we only do it the right way.” To home stage effectively, you need at least a month’s lead time to contact designers and allow them the creative process to execute a flawless design. “The more detail you put into it, the more completed it looks,” Yaraghi said. “Basically all you need is to bring your luggage and move in.” Visit www.safavieh. com or call 877-919-1010 to make an appointment with a Safavieh designer. The Safavieh design team has the vision and talent to stage any living space, like the rooms shown here from their Garvies Point, Glen Cove project. (Images courtesy of Safavieh Home Furnishings)

A MARRIAGE
Of Color
Illuminati Ultimate ng (Pantone 13-06 Gray (Pan tone 17-547) and 104)
Pantone reveals the Color of the Year 2021 BY CHRISTY HINKO
As people look for ways to fortify themselves with energy, clarity and hope to overcome the continuing uncertainty, Pantone’s Color of the Year 2021 selections are spirited and emboldened, satisfying our quest for vitality. Illuminating (Pantone 13-0647) is a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity, a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power. Ultimate Gray (Pantone 17-5104) is emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation.
“W
e may have had our fill of grey rooms these past few years but that’s only because it was showcased exclusively on its own,” Greg Lanza said. “We should learn to use on-trend color with others to balance and make it our own. Gray looks great with orange or yellow. Why not pair it with navy, white and fuchsia or with light blue and pea green.” Lanza, of Greg Lanza Interior Design, an allied member of the American Society of Interior Designers, is a full-service firm in Locust Valley (www. greglanzadesign.com). For 22 years, Pantone’s Color of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings and industrial design, as well as product packaging and graphic design.
Usage A marriage of strength and optimism, Ultimate Gray and Illuminating do not have to be used in equal proportions, either color can take precedence whether for apparel, beauty, home furnishings, product design or packaging. “We see colors. We also experience and feel the colors that surround us. The pantone colors of 2021 are an insightful combination of resilience and positivity,” Karen Ferreyra said. Ferreyra, an ASID (American Society of
Interior Designers) and an Associate Member of IDS (Interior Design Society) of Karen Ferreyra Interiors, LLC (www.karenferreyrainteriors.com) has more than 20 years of experience and a background in remodeling. “Many of my clients are choosing to use gray as a base throughout their entire home,” Ferreyra said. “Ultimate Gray, a neutral, mid-tone gray is strong, but also soothing, like the comfort of an old sweater and easy to live with. Illuminating, a sunny yellow with a vibrant spirit is strong enough to use independently. However, in this case, a little goes a long way.”
In Apparel and Fashion Accessories Illuminating punctuated by a touch of Ultimate Gray conveys a message of sunshine and strength. Enduring Ultimate Gray provides a great bouncing off point with Illuminating bringing in some brightness by way of a scarf, footwear, handbag, shawl, tops. With its energetic presence the marriage of Ultimate Gray and Illuminating are a great combination for activewear. The high visibility contrast of Illuminating and Ultimate Gray adds to its appeal for outerwear.
In Beauty A mix of warm and cool tones, combining Ultimate Gray and Illuminating in hair or nail makes a dramatic statement. Illuminating sparkles and shimmers when paired with Ultimate Gray in eye make-up.
In Packaging and Multi-Media Design Pairing Illuminating, the color of highest visibility and reflectivity with resilient Ultimate Gray produces a visually noticeable message no matter where it appears. The coupling of Illuminating with Ultimate Gray infuses a message of vitality into a firm foundation of reliability, wisdom and experience for packaging and multi-media design.

Ultimate Gray and Illuminating are a great combination to set the mood in any room in the home adding a dose of sunshine and positivity. Juxtaposing Illuminating with Ultimate Gray in table linens, sheeting and home accessories including pillows and tabletop infuses vitality and liveliness. “Test the waters by using it in a space that you want a little pick-me-up; think laundry room and as a complementary color to brighten up a gray space with pillows, accessories, flowers and even your front door,” Ferreyra said. Painting a front door in bright yellow Illuminating conveys a warm and welcoming message when supported by solid and dependable Ultimate Gray in the exterior finishes. The ideal

combination for any office whether in the home or in a commercial space with Ultimate Gray providing the firm foundation for Illuminating, a vibrant yellow that heightens awareness and enhances intuition, lighting the way to the intellectual curiosity, originality, and resourcefulness of an open mind. “I don’t care for single colors on their own, but I do love the magic and energy of unexpected pairings,” Lanza said. “So if you are tired of your gray room, add a surprise splash of color to wake it up; there’s no need to reinvest if you hire the right talent to assist you.”
About the Pantone Color of the Year “This year’s colors project hope and
vibrancy in the juxtaposition of Illuminating against the steady calm of Ultimate Gray,” said Teresa Scudero, a member of NKBA, a professional member of the Interior Design Society and owner of TDS Designs (Tdsdesigns.net). “A strong and bold color combination that can be fun and fabulous at the same time.” The Color of the Year selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. To arrive at the selection each year, Pantone’s color experts at the Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking for new color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles and socio-economic conditions. “Pantone is a leader in color forecasting, not only for interior design but for fashion and product design as well,” Lanza said. Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures, and effects that impact color, relevant social media platforms and even up-coming sporting events that capture worldwide attention. A margarita, Bloody Mary and of course, a Long Island iced tea aren’t the same without a quality tequila. There are so many brands and types of the iconic liquor, it could be daunting to decide which blend of tequila to use for each cocktail recipe. Espolòn Tequila is one of the fastest growing tequilas on the market today. The brand’s premium collection, Espolòn Blanco, Reposado and Añejo, is award-winning.
T
he late Master Distiller Cirilo Oropeza spent decades learning both the science of distillation and the art of tequila making. His passion for it, matched with his strict attention to detail, fostered his dream of creating a tequila of great quality that everyone could enjoy. For Shaking Espolòn Blanco, the brand’s signature tequila, is the purest expression of passion for Mexico’s legendary spirit. Made with only 100 percent Blue Weber agave, it carries delicate floral and tropical fruit notes and a clean finish. Espolòn Blanco can be en-
joyed neat or as the perfect accompaniment to a classic tequila cocktail. The Blanco label, featuring the brand’s iconic rooster Ramón, references the charge in the fight for Mexico’s independence. The brand label art is inspired by the famous Mexican artist José Guadalupe Posada. For Sharing Espolòn Reposado, made with only 100 percent Blue Weber Agave, rests for two to four months in new American oak barrels, giving this award-winning tequila bold character with hints of tropical fruit, vanilla and a long, spicy finish. The label art proudly features a tribute to Mexico’s
bustling marketplaces, where cultures collide and all ways of life gather. For Sipping Crafted over a year-long process, Espolòn Añejo, made from 100 percent Blue Weber Agave, is first aged in new American oak barrels before being finished in Wild Turkey bourbon barrels. This unique process, a first in Mexico, allows the tequila to take on some of the woody notes and velvety finish found in whiskey, creating an extremely smooth tequila rich in color and with a distinct, spirited flavor. The label features the jarabe, Mexico’s rebellious and forbidden dance.

BENEATH THE SURFACE
Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Roslyn superintendent shows that the truth always prevails BY ANTHONY MURRAY
Growing up, the multifaceted and talented Hugh Jackman always had a love and passion for the art of acting because it always felt like home to him.
“I
enjoyed the camaraderie and the family of it,” Jackman said of his first years as an actor. “It was like my tribe. You know when you’re just with those people you feel like you can just be yourself? We used to put on plays outside of school and put on a play every semester because I absolutely loved it. Later, I realized I’m someone who is fascinated by humanity, their motivations, why we do things and what the world is about. I was always fascinated by history, too. I graduated as a journalism major from college, which is around storytelling, understanding human nature and trying to get to the truth. So I think all those things contributed to me becoming an actor.” That love and passion has led Jackman to catapult into superstardom, where he’s starred in dozens of films, including the X-Men series as Wolverine, Les Misérables and The Greatest Showman, among other timeless and countless movies. Jackman is tackling his latest role as disgraced Roslyn School District Superintendent Frank Tassone in HBO’s film Bad Education, which was filmed on Long Island. At last year’s Primetime Emmy Awards, the film won for Outstanding Television Movie and received an Outstanding Lead Actor nomination for Jackman. Inspired by true events of a rather painful time that the Roslyn School District faced in the early 2000s, Bad Education, which is written by Roslyn native Mike Makowsky and directed by Cory Finley, follows the many ups and downs of Tassone and his right-hand woman Pam Gluckin, who is portrayed by actress Allison Janney. During their time at the school, Tassone and Gluckin reigned over the Roslyn School District as it was on the verge of the nation’s top spot, spurring record-setting college admissions and soaring property values. However, when a multi-million dollar embezzlement scheme surfaces that threatens to destroy all that they’ve built, Tassone is forced to maintain order and secrecy by whatever means necessary. The darkly comical film highlights the deficiencies of the public education system in the U.S. while examining the broader forces that foster greed, corruption and lack of accountability in our institutions. Unaware of the prior events that unfolded in Roslyn, Jackman was drawn to the script just by its shocking and surprising story. “I read the script and I said, ‘Oh, this is an amazing story,’” Jackman said. “I had no idea this happened. The script itself, I couldn’t work out from reading it what genre or tone it was whether it had a Coen brothers feel or if it was more of a thriller. It felt like it straddled different worlds and sometimes, I felt that it was difficult to pull off. My agent sent me Cory Finley’s first film, Thorough-
breds, and I was 20 minutes into watching it and I was like, ‘I’m doing this movie’ because that is exactly what he achieved in Thoroughbreds. So it was a mixture of the story, the character and then ultimately I think Corey as a director [that drew me to the film].” Once signing on, Jackman said he did lots of research to learn all he could about Tasssone. “I didn’t speak to Frank himself, but I hired a researcher and there’s a lot on the public record,” Jackman said. “There was lots of video and the writer Mike Makowsky is also from the school. So we had a lot of information and a lot to go on. I did loads and loads of research and then, basically from there, I had a dialect coach. We did a lot of work on costumes and fat suits. We rehearsed quite a lot, which is great and went from there.”
thought of himself as the best. That was what fascinates me about this story is that he gradually made himself believe it was OK for him to do the things he did. When he was sentenced they said he stole $2.2 million. He very defensively said, ‘I did not. I stole $1.1 million.’ He thought that was vindication. The other million—he was spending on teachers and valuing them. He justified everything. What the movie did is show how that was possible. How do ‘good people’ and upstanding public servants go this far off track? It all started with a Greek salad and a soda with a colleague at a local restaurant. That’s what fascinated me.” Realizing that the film would drudge up difficult feelings once again for the people of Roslyn who experienced the scandal firsthand, Jackman said it is still an important story to tell. “I feel like a sense of responsibility for every character that I play,” Jackman explained. “It’s a painful period in Roslyn’s history. I think it’s a cautionary tale. I still think it’s worth telling, but I know that it’s going to be painful for people who
Hugh Jackman as Frank Tassone and Allison Janney as Pam Gluckin
So how would Jackman describe Tassone, who led quite a surprising double life outside of school. “Teachers have to know who they’re teaching, know how to get stuff across and how to get their students’ trust and confidence,” he said. “So he started as a teacher and he genuinely had that altruistic wonderful sense of teaching to begin with of making education better for kids all over the country. He had a doctorate from Columbia and was a very smart man. He understood the system and he managed to get Roslyn to number four in the country. I think he was the highest paid superintendent in the country and he was highly sought after. He started many programs, which are now standard across the country. “He was a gifted educator. I don’t think he saw himself as a Machiavellian master manipulator trying to get out of what he wanted. He really
went through it to have this all brought back up again and have their school name brought up again 15 years later when things have been forgotten. I understand for certain people and that’s why I do mountains of research to make sure that what we’re doing is accurate. It’s not just to titillate, entertain or throw mud at certain people. It’s about understanding human nature and making sure this stuff doesn’t happen again.” Also starring in the film alongside Jackman and Janney is actor and comedian Ray Romano, who portrays school board president Bob Spicer. “Both of them I love and they’re so down to earth,” Jackman said about his co-stars. “I remember sitting outside our trailer that I shared with Ray, and we were sitting on the step and we’re in a parking lot in Levittown and across the parking lot, which was deserted, was a gas
(Photos courtesy of HBO)
station and a comedy place in the most random position in the middle of nowhere. Ray is like, ‘I used to play there every week.’ Allison and I came from theater, so we have that in common and the camaraderie amongst all people in the theater.” Within the film, there is also a lot of symbolism. Just pay close attention to the ceiling. “I love what Mike Makowsky did,” Jackman said. “It was in the script. It was just this idea that the veneer, even in Frank, who was always perfectly groomed with all this plastic surgery that underneath things were not right. So building a $6 million crosswalk, but there’s leaking going on in the administrative building? I think that’s a metaphor in many ways for what is happening in society and that’s what Cory really wanted to get across. We’re not necessarily looking under the carpet at what is happening. We’re not looking deeply or systematically on why we have a system that rewarded people so extravagantly like superintendents and why they’re so valuable. Some areas had wonderful teachers and others did not,
Actor and comedian Ray Romano (left) portrays school board president Bob Spicer.
and some got a lot of money and others didn’t. I think that’s what was really important to him and what he wanted to get across. I thought he infused that in every frame of the film.” Quite charitable, Jackman is involved in numerous types of charities around the world. “We have the Laughing Man Foundation, which is part of the coffee company that we have as a family,” Jackman said. “We give all our profits back to the farmers. We do a lot of work with the Actor’s Fund, my wife has two organizations Adopt Change and Hopeland, which is basically centered around kids. I’m an ambassador for World Vision and the Fight Cancer Foundation, so I’m lucky to work with a number of organizations.” Bad Education is available on HBO On Demand, HBO NOW, HBO GO and partners’ streaming platforms.

Great Neck producers use BroadwayHD to bring live theater to the masses BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
You can say that theater is in Stewart Lane’s blood. The proud Great Neck High School North alum has spent the past four decades plying his trade as a Broadway producer (Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Legally Blonde) and director on top of prior experience as a playwright and actor. Lane’s passion for the stage, shared with wife Bonnie Comley, led the duo to launch BroadwayHD, a live theater-streaming platform, back in 2015.
F
or the price of $8.99 a month (or $99.99 a year), subscribers have access to an aggregate of 300-plus fulllength, ad-free musicals and plays to choose from. Six years later, Lane and Comley have essentially cornered the market for this kind of service. While he declined to provide numbers, Lane says they’ve enjoyed a major growth spurt that’s seen their base grow 110 percent from 2018 to 2019 alone. Not unlike how Hollywood movie studios received the advent of television, the live theater world had reservations about the BroadwayHD
concept when it initially launched. “One of the challenges we faced in starting out is that we’re dealing with 17 unions and guilds,” Lane explained. “One of the advantages I had was that I’ve been producing on Broadway for 40 years, so they know me. It’s been a little easier than for someone who might be coming in from the outside. But now we’re seen as an additive. People in the industry see that we encourage audiences to seek out live theater. I will also cite this as a statistic. The Broadway audience for the past 35 years has been around 45 or older—it’s usually
women from a higher economic bracket who are better educated and are buying the tickets. For the first time in 2018, they lowered the median age to about 40 or 41 and I’m sure that’s because of our BroadwayHD subscribers, who are more 18 to 25 versus mid-40s to 60s. We’re definitely a younger audience. We’re the future of Broadway because we are bringing younger audiences in and are the gateway to Broadway.” Comley agrees with her spouse and business partner on the important role their platform plays in preserving live theater’s legacy, in part by ushering it into the digital era. “BroadwayHD’s mission has always been twofold,” she said. “We are a streaming entertainment service but we are also a member of The Broadway League and therefore a service business to the Broadway industry. We serve Broadway fans and future Broadway fans by giving them a platform to engage digitally 24 hours a day, seven days a week with the art form that they love and we are committed
Broadway HD founders Stewart F. Lane and Bonnie Comley (Photo courtesy of BroadwayHD)
now more than ever to preserve and promote the live Broadway stage industry.” The confluence of technology, the continued explosion of live theater’s appeal and a younger generation comfortable with different ways of accessing content led to the aha moment that inspired Lane and Comley to launch BroadwayHD. “When we started out, most people looked

Continued from page 1B askance at us,” Lane recalled. “People had tried to monetize other aspects of live theater—whether it was on pay-per-view on cable, the DVD market and even more recently, in cinema. But there wasn’t enough of a populous out there that supported the theater that could maintain this kind of investment. Around the time we talked, things were changing, especially the audiences. The younger audiences that loved the theater and their love of it kept increasing among young people. They watched how their entertainment kept changing and how it moved from movies and TV to iPads, iPhones and laptops. Bonnie saw this transition happening and we wanted to be in the forefront of this. That’s always been a mandate of ours—celebrating live theater and sharing it with the world, so it can be geographically accessible to those who can’t make it to Broadway. And make it as affordable for those who can’t afford to buy a ticket once they get to Broadway.” The pandemic has proved to be a boon for streaming platforms and BroadwayHD is no exception. With Broadway marquees dimmed for the foreseeable future and people accessing entertainment from the safety and comfort of their couches, Comley said 2020 had been a jump year for BroadwayHD. And while Lane wouldn’t share
subscriber data. Comley pointed out viewer numbers doubled since the coronavirus outbreak. “We made deals with major content distributors, vastly improved the quality of service and started seeing brand recognition growth in the outlets covering BroadwayHD,” Comley said. “We definitely had some hiccups in 2020, especially when trying to react quickly to pandemic, but we are coming out of the last year in a much stronger position.” She also admits how close to home COVID-19’s devastation has hit. “It has been a difficult year for everyone,” she said. “The theater industry, which we rely on for content and awareness, has been hit incredibly hard. At BroadwayHD, we’ve been lucky in that we have been able to seamlessly deliver content and been able to continue the subscriber growth that started before the pandemic. We’ve been able to procure content while still passing on a heavily discounted rate for a luxury good.” Among the offerings the BroadwayHD site has are productions of Kinky Boots, 42nd Street, Smokey Joe’s Café and Cats alongside other up and coming fare like Hetty Feather and Brokeback Mountain: The Musical. With a premium put on productions that either have a Broadway-caliber

cast or directors, Lane and Comley have shot shows at venues on Broadway, Off Broadway, London’s West End and esteemed regional theaters including the Geffen Playhouse and Manhattan Theatre Club. The site has also added a number of archived productions including the 1949 version of Death of A Salesman starring the late Lee J. Cobb and Joe Papp’s revival of The Pirates of Penzance featuring Linda Ronstadt and Kevin Kline. With the global reach of the web, Lane has been delighted to receive emails from ecstatic subscribers from roughly 122 counties around the globe including Nigeria, Argentina, Japan and
Mexico. It’s all about the democratization of live theater that’s at the heart of what BroadwayHD represents. “One of the most rewarding parts of the whole experience are the emails we get from all over the world from people who have never been to a Broadway show but know what it is,” Lane says. “They thank me and say that it’s changed their life. That’s exactly what you want theater to do to people—affect and stay with them.” Visit www.broadwayhd.com to find out more about BroadwayHD.

PIONEERING, PEERLESS, UNPARALLELED Range Rover Celebrates Half Century BY CHRISTY HINKO
T
“It is comfortable; it is luxurious and it handles spectacularly,” he added. Customers can specify select Range Rover models with one of two design packs. With the Black Exterior Pack key elements, including the hood and tailgate lettering, grille mesh and inner grille surround, are finished in Narvik Black, while the Shadow Exterior Pack sees the same components finished in Shadow Atlas. The introduction of a trio of new special edition models for 2021 gives customers more choice than ever before, with the Range Rover Autobiography Fifty Edition, HSE Westminster Edition and SVAutobiography Dynamic Black Edition models each providing a unique take on the elegant SUV.
he Range Rover celebrates 50 years of pioneering innovation, peerless refinement and unparalleled all-terrain capability with a choice of three new special editions and available enhanced Cabin Air Ionization technology for the 2021 model year.
Over half a century, the Land Rover luxury SUV has evolved into one of the most refined and desirable SUVs in the world with a unique combination of effortless sophistication and all-terrain capability. “In the world of luxury vehicles, the Range Rover has always stood apart as peerless and enduring,” said Professor Gerry McGovern Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, Land Rover chief creative officer. “It’s unique and pioneering sensibilities, together with an unrivaled engineering approach, have been the intrinsic values which our customers have admired since the first of the breed was revealed in 1970.” The legendary profile, floating roof and clamshell hood are hallmarks of its peerless design, while the interior combines the finest materials and latest technologies to deliver the level of refinement customers expect from the flagship of the Range Rover family. “Everybody is driving a Range Rover today,” Land Rover Freeport General Manager Tony Anton said. “Young people, older people, people from every background and demographic.” Anton regularly drives a full-sized Range Rover. “It’s an exciting, youthful, beautiful-driving vehicle that has made it onto everyone’s shopping list,” Anton said. “It’s absolutely spectacular and it drives as smoothly as being on a cloud.” There’s a common misconception that all SUV trucks handle roughly, like a boxy tank. “Absolutely not,” Anton said. “I spent the last 30 years driving some version of the XJ Jaguar, which is a low-to-the-ground sedan that handles exceptionally well. As that car was getting phased out over the last few years, I switched to the Range Rover, really expecting it to be like an older [SUV truck] that I used to own, where you’d be going around a turn and feel like you’re going to flip over with a high center of gravity and it sometimes felt more like you were riding a horse instead of driving a car.” Anton said the Range Rover has tremendous stability.
Autobiography Fifty Edition
Clockwise: The Range Rover buttery interior; wheel packages can be customized; new special edition models give customers more choice than ever; Land Rover overlooks no detail on every model in its brand.
To celebrate 50 years of Range Rover, the limited run of 50th Anniversary “Fifty” special edition models will be restricted to just 1,970 vehicles, in recognition of the year the original Range Rover was launched. Building on the luxuriously-appointed Autobiography, the Range Rover Autobiography Fifty Edition features a number of bespoke exterior and interior design enhancements. These include Auric Atlas grille surround, bumper and side vent accents, tailgate finisher and Autobiography badge all finished in unique Auric Atlas. Two 22-inch wheels are available on the 50th Anniversary model, both featuring a distinctive forged, five-split spoke design, one with an exclusive Gloss Black with Diamond Turned finish. The badging features a “Fifty” script created personally by McGovern, which will appear both on the exterior of the vehicle and throughout the interior via the unique “1 of 1970” center console commissioning plaque, headrests, dashboard and illuminated treadplates. The Range Rover Autobiography Fifty Edition is available in standard and long wheelbase body designs with customers able to choose from metallic and premium metallic colors; Carpathian Grey, Rossello Red, Aruba and Santorini Black. Popular Fragrances For Spring COMPILED BY CAROLINE RYAN
While we look forward to warmer weather and more sunshine, we also look forward to upgrading our wardrobes for Spring—this also means upgrading our perfume scents to reflect the season. While purchasing a fragrance can be a personal choice, here are some scents that are sure to be popular this upcoming season. Popular scents this year include rose, cedar and patchouli. Dolce Rose Dolce&Gabbana Beauty recently introduced Dolce Rose, the exquisite new flower joining the Dolce bouquet. The first Eau de Toilette in the Dolce collection, Dolce Rose celebrates the most iconic of flowers–a symbol of love, beauty and femininity that is one of Dolce&Gabbana’s iconic patterns. The fragrance, crafted by perfumer Violaine Collas, is an addictive fruity floral, combining delicate rose absolute and crisp rose centifolia with soft musks and tangy red currants. Joyful and full of energy, Dolce Rose is a rose of exquisite allure. Notes include red currant, mandarin essential oil and green apple. $105, Macys.com
Maison Francis Kurkdjian L’Eau À La Rose L’eau À la rose eau de toilette unfolds on the skin with a delicate fruity, floral freshness. To compose this fragrance, master perfumer Francis Kurkdjian chose two roses from different origins: Damascena rose oil from Bulgaria offers its fruity note, slightly spicy and fruity (pear and lychee) for a blooming top note. On the base note, centifolia rose from Grasse gives its generous rose floral note. A lychee top note adds a fruity and tangy facet. $225 at Saks Fifth Avenue Maison Francis Kurkdjian L’Homme À la Rose A rose for men—woody floral eau de parfum. In the first few seconds, very fresh, green and bursting notes paired with a grapefruit accord and essence of Damask rose from Bulgaria create a sensation of natural vitality. Then come the middle notes of a rosy, very woody accord which brings the fragrance verticality, gradually enhanced by the woody amber base notes which infuse the sillage with sensuality. $275 at Bloomingdale.com De Marly Delina La Rosée Just released this month, Delina La Rosée is the latest addition to the collection of feminine scents, Delina and Delina Exclusif. Delina La Rosée is a sensorial delight, capturing nature’s most captivating marvels, the beauty of fresh blooms, in a fragrance. Notes include Italian bergamot, Turkish rose essence, vetiver. $295 at nordstrom.com
