Upholstered in waterproof fabrics, such as Sunbrella, the cozy couch-like sectionals welcome relaxation and modern style. “Sectionals are popular for outdoor seating,” Yaraghi said. “People don’t want to sit on a thin cushion, they want to sit together comfortably.” Outdoor rugs that withstand the elements are another popular accessory when it comes to creating an outdoor living room. Ralph Lauren’s striped outdoor rugs, which come in tranquil shades of blues, greens and whites, are among the most sought-after this season. Lighter furniture finishes like light gray, stone colors and live edge wood are other elements that help create a comforting outdoor living space. In June, Safavieh began reopening its brick-and-mortar retail locations across the region with social distancing restrictions in place. The company, which recently opened two new stores in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan and in Norwalk, is supplying masks, gloves and sanitizers at the door for shoppers. Additionally, it eliminated 20 percent of indoor inventory in all of its stores to encourage social distancing. “When people walk in it will be much more open, they will not feel crowded,” Yaraghi said. “We have different design sections so no one has to be together in one room.” Technology also plays a part. Their designers are available via Zoom to help customers select the right furnishings for their homes without coming into the stores. In-person shoppers also have the luxury of viewing potential designs on large TV screens from a safe distance. “The customers are very excited to be able to come in,” Yaraghi said about the reopening. “They have been waiting for months and they are finally able to create the backyard of their dreams.” Safavieh Home Furnishings is located at 2 Channel Dr., in Port Washington.

ow more than ever our home is our oasis. Since March, the COVID-19 pandemic has kept us cooped up inside—but now it is time to return to the outdoors. Typically summertime reprieves are associated with long weekend getaways or carefree al fresco dining at waterfront restaurants. And while New York and states across the nation are continuing to slowly reopen, many homeowners are opting instead to relax, mask-free in their own backyards. Creating an outdoor sanctuary that mimics the comfort and luxury of indoor spaces is becoming increasingly popular, said Michael Yaraghi, the owner and president of luxury home goods retailer Safavieh. “After being inside the house for three months during the cold season, people want to enjoy their backyards,” Yaraghi said. “They want to refresh everything because they can’t go to a friend’s house or a restaurant. They want to make their backyards as nice as they can so they feel like they’re on vacation.” In sharp contrast to last year’s trends that favored heavy materials, such as iron accents, summer 2020 is all about contemporary decor that emphasizes clean lines, lightness, and, most of all, comfort. That is true both in terms of color and accessories, Yaraghi noted. Airy hues like blue and white are the most apropos outdoor fabric colors of the season. The palette is prominent in Safavieh’s summer outdoors product line. “Lifestyle is becoming more causal everywhere—inside the home and outside,” he said. “The idea is that no one can go anywhere, they can’t travel, so people are making their homes an oasis.” The increased emphasis on the outdoor space has changed the landscape and perspective of outdoor furniture. A prime example of inviting the comfort of the indoors into the

PLANTING FIELDS: From Mansion To Historic Site BY JOE SCOTCHIE

The turn of the century represented the zenith of The Gilded Age. The captains of industry built the once-mighty middle-class and needless to say, they had plenty of money left to themselves. Land for the Planting Fields Arboretum State Historic Park, which includes the Coe Hall Historic House Museum, was first purchased in 1904 by Helen MacGregor Byrne, wife of New York City lawyer James Byrne. That land included six farming properties, which she dubbed as the “Upper Planting Fields Farm.” Between 1904 and 1910, modest work was done to create hedges, perennial borders, and espaliered fruit trees. However, most of the property was left undeveloped. In 1913, the 353-acre site was purchased by William Robertson Coe, an insurance and railroad executive, and his wife Mary “Mai” Huttleston (née Rogers) Coe, the youngest daughter of millionaire industrialist Henry H. Rogers, who had been a principal of Standard Oil. That’s serious money. The couple begin to create the property that stands as today. The 67-room Coe Hall included greenhouses, gardens, woodland paths and plant collections. Planting Fields also features an herbarium of more than 10,000 pressed specimens. As the Gilded Age boomed along, trees were ferried across Long Island Sound in mid-winter. Roads were widened. Plants included rhododendrons, Japanese crabapples and cherries, and forest and specimen trees, lindens, Scotch and red pines, oaks. In 1918, tragedy struck as the property’s first mansion burned to the ground. Its replacement, the present Coe Hall, was constructed

The Oyster Bay park is opened daily from dawn to dusk, however the buildings remain closed due to COVID-19. The virtual tour and descriptions are available online provide highlights of this historic estate. between 1918-21 in the Tudor Revival-style. According to newspaper stories of the day, Coe Hall quickly became famous as the Coe’s “interest in rare species of trees and plant collections made the estate a botanical marvel.” Sadly, Mrs. Coe died in 1924 at age 49. As with other great North Shore mansions, the world of the Coe’s came to an end with World War II. By the 1950s, the great suburban boom was underway. In 1949,

the estate was deeded to the state of New York to become a state park. The Planting Fields Arboretum was thus born. Between 1955 and 1964, the land was also used as a temporary campus for a State University of New York (SUNY) college of science and engineering. By 1968, the last of the Planting Fields was used for SUNY purposes. All facilities and grounds became the current day Planting Fields. Today, the arboretum and state

park covers more than 400 acres in Upper Brookville. Operated by a foundation, the fields include the Coe Hall mansion, hosting an annual summer concert series, primarily focused on jazz. As its website states: “Planting Fields is one of only a few surviving estates on Long Island on its original acreage, intact with all its buildings and its grandly furnished mansion. Nearly a thousand such estates were built after the Civil War through about 1940, making this area the largest concentration of large estates anywhere in the U.S. Just under 60 percent of them survive today; about 400 are in residential use, most on reduced size lots. Planting Fields was one of the last of these estates to be created and is one of the most splendid, with 409-acres.” The fields face a bright future. Planting Fields Arboretum was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. In March, the Planting Fields Foundation was selected to participate in the Museum Assessment Program (MAP), which is administered by the American Alliance of Museums. The Foundation’s participation is made possible through funding provided by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). “We are honored to have the opportunity to participate in AAM’s highly regarded MAP program,” Planting Fields executive director Gina Wouters said, “Not only is it a reflection of our core values around standards of excellence, but the timing of this exercise is also perfectly aligned with the development of our Strategic Plan.” Coe Hall is currently closed due to COVID-19, but Planting Fields is offering several fun digital events on www.plantingfields.org. The grounds are also open.

Roses

They are drought tolerant and resistant to black spot, which are problems that can plague traditional roses. The sweet fragrance of the Knock Out rose comes from blooms that appear from April until November. The foliage turns burgundy in the fall. This is a musthave for every garden. Planting summer blooming shrubs will provide you and your family with many years of spectacular color in your garden. Hiking & Biking Trails Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail

Extending from Massapequa to Woodbury along the border of Nassau and Suffolk Counties, the Nassau-Suffolk Greenbelt Trail stretches 20 miles from the North Shore to the South Shore. Accessible year-round, though certainly more enjoyable come spring, the trail is dog and bicycle-friendly. It takes an estimated eight hours to walk the full trail, but there are other activities along the way. Sands Point Preserve

Located on the Gold Coast, Sands Point Preserve’s grounds are open for visitors on a new summer schedule due to COVID-19. The Great Lawn, Rose Garden, forest trails and pond area are accessible, however, the iconic Hempstead House, Welcome Center, Woodland Playground and dog run are closed for the health and safety of visitors. Restrooms are available in Castle Gould’s Black Box, and are closed periodically for sterilizing and cleaning throughout the day. Mashomack Preserve

Often referred to as the “Jewel of the Peconic,” Mashomack Preserve on Shelter Island is well worth the quick ferry ride from Sag Harbor or Greenport. Stretching more than 2,000 acres, the preserve accounts for nearly a third of the entire island. Trails range from 1.5 to 10 miles long, taking hikers passed tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields and freshwater marshes. The preserve teems with wildlife, and it is common to see ospreys, piping plovers and other animals. Due to COVID-19, Mashomack’s in-person events have been postponed until further notice. he tradition of the clambake dates back to before our country was founded. It was Native Americans who taught settlers the art of steaming freshly caught seafood on the sandy New England shores. The New England clambake is generally credited to the Wampanoag Indians, indigenous to Cape Cod, Massachusetts. At the time, lobster was generally used as bait to lure local fish. Oysters, scallops and clams along with locally grown corn were (and remain) hallmarks of the clambake. Today, the clambake has evolved to include lobster, mussels and potatoes, as well. Fish and sausage are also commonly used. The ancient cook method of preparing a traditional pit-dug clambake is still practiced today. But there are

drawbacks. Firstly, it’s a day-long affair of digging and steaming so if you’re located near a beach that doesn’t have local restrictions for open fires, you might be in luck. Though for many this is not the case, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is restricting beach access. No beach? No problem. You can have a mini bake in your backyard. No fire permits necessary and you don’t have to dig a hole and start a big wood fire. You just need a big pot, some cheesecloth and seaweed. Plus, if your not a pitmaster, using a pot makes it much simpler to achieve an even cook. “It is a modern twist on the traditional clambake,” Kevin Fagan, outreach manager at LobsterAnywhere. com, said. “The traditional clambake takes a long time.”

Clambake at Home

Ingredients 4 dozen steamer clams fresh seaweed 6 potatoes, skin on 6 ears of corn with the husk on 6 medium whole onions melted or drawn butter 6 sausages 6 live lobsters, about 1 ¼ lb each

Clambake Instructions Soak some seaweed in a pot of wat er. Divide the steamers among 6 pieces of cheesecloth and tie corners so you can pick them up. Place on seaweed. Remove silk and all but two layers of corn husk from the corn . Place corn, potatoes, onions and sausage over the clam s in that order. Top off with the lobsters. Put a layer of cheese cloth over the lobsters and cover with another 4 inches of sea weed. Cover closely and place pot over high heat. When stea ming begins, reduce heat to medium and cook for one hour and 15 minutes. Serve with fresh, hot crusty bread and plenty of melted butter.
