Community rallies to celebrate baby’s Heartiversary

ne week after little Jon D’Alessandro came into the world a year ago, he was whisked into a seven-and-a-halfhour open-heart surgical procedure to address his being born with transposition of the great arteries, a serious but rare congenital heart defect. On this past April 4, a 50-car parade of neighbors, friends and strangers drove by the D’Alessandro family’s Massapequa Park home to help them celebrate Jon’s one-year “Heartiversary.” Carrying some of the roughly 100-plus participants were four motorcycles, three police horses, four police cars and two firetrucks.

While COVID-19 and the social distancing requirements that come with it effectively quashed the original celebration that was going to be held at a nearby hall, Jon’s mother Allison had no idea of the turnout that would ensue once the D’Alessandros decided they would go with the car parade concept that has sprung up in light of the pandemic.

“When we started hearing about these car parades, I thought that would be cool and it would be something to show him in 15 years about how his family was so willing to put themselves out there to celebrate him,” she said. “It was really just word-of-mouth and one thing led to another. There were people here that I didn’t even know. One car that truly touched my heart was a family from Franklin Square. We didn’t know each other. They saw our story on social media and this woman’s son is a child with autism. He’s been so scared to leave the house since this virus started. He heard about Jon and told his mom that he wanted to leave the house and he needed to celebrate this baby. I thought it was so special because Jon is the joy the world so needs. He truly is a miracle. People still need to remember that through the bad, there is good and all of [the bad] comes to an end.”

Jon’s father Anthony is a New York City mounted policeman, while his older siblings are four-year-old sister Charlie and two-year-old brother Anthony, Jr. The rare congenital heart condition the baby was born with meant that his pair of two-millimeter arteries had to be moved since the

way blood circulates through the body was changed, leaving a shortage of oxygen in blood flowing from the heart to the rest of the body. Without an adequate supply of oxygen-rich blood, the body can’t function properly and Jon could have faced serious complications or death without treatment. Born at 7 pounds, 2 ounces, Jon was intubated twice before he was deemed ready to undergo the lengthy surgical procedure. While he came through it on the upside, his mother acknowledged certain realities are part of Jon’s new normal going forward.

“Basically, Jon is a baby that comes with a handbook,” she said. “For starters, the one thing we’re never able to do is pick him up by his arms.

hen the U.S. Department of Treasury authorized the Coronavinus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES Act), eligible Americans struggling as a result of the economic fallout from COVID-19 were being offered a federal financial lifeline. The CARES Act authorized the Treasury Department to issue emergency stimulus payments of up to $1,200 for eligible adults and up to $500 for eligible children to help offset the costs of essentials like housing, groceries, car payments and other necessary expenses. But as those checks were being issued, no provision was in place exempting them from garnishment, allowing debt collectors to potentially benefit before consumers. New York Attorney General Letitia James recently took action to protect millions of New Yorkers and block debt collectors from raiding billions of dollars in emergency stimulus payments authorized by the CARES Act. James issued official guidance to New York State banking institutions, creditors and debt collectors, making clear that financial relief provided through stimulus payments are exempt from garnishment under New York law.

“As the coronavirus crisis continues to wreak havoc on our society, I will do everything in my power to protect the wallets of every New Yorker,” James said. “We are taking concrete action to ensure debt collectors keep their hands off New Yorkers’ stimulus payments.

This official guidance makes clear that banks and debt collectors cannot freeze or seize stimulus funds that are on their way to New York families and any institution that violates this guidance will face swift legal action from my office.”

James’ legal action is based on multiple state and federal consumer protection laws and clarifies that any attempt to garnish stimulus funds from New Yorkers will be treated as a violation of these laws. The guidance also addresses what are known as “setoffs”—where a bank seizes funds in a consumer’s account at the bank to pay a debt owed to the bank. CARES Act payments are now exempt from this practice, and James is urging all financial institutions to follow the lead of the nation’s largest banks and halt collection on negative account balances to give their customers access

to vital stimulus payments.

Under New York law, certain types of property—including public benefits like public assistance, Social Security and veterans’ and retirement benefits—are exempt from execution, levy, attachment, garnishment or other legal process by a judgment creditor seeking to satisfy a monetary judgment. The New York State Court of Appeals has held that exemption statutes “are to be construed liberally in favor of debtors” because exemptions “serve the important purpose of protect[ing] the debtor’s essential needs.”

CARES Act payments are similarly aimed at debtors’ or borrowers’ essential needs and—under James’ guidance—will therefore be treated and are subject to the same protections as statutorily exempt payments and will not be subject to garnishment—a legal mechanism that typically involves the freezing of funds in a bank account by creditors or debt collectors. James’ guidance advises banking institutions that CARES Act payments will follow similar legal processes as other public benefits, and any person or entity that garnishes or attempts to garnish these payments will have violated multiple state and federal consumer protection laws.

After Congress passed the law, but still left vulnerable Americans susceptible to predatory creditors, James led a bipartisan coalition of 25 states in calling on Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and the Trump Administration to ensure CARES Act payments would be exempt from garnishment, but, to date, the Treasury Department has refused to do so.

County Looks To Quickly Ramp Up Antibody Testing

Early results suggest coronavirus spread further than believed

assau County is quickly becoming one of the main hubs for coronavirus antibody testing in New York as the state looks to aggressively expand its capacity for the tests as part of the next phase in dealing with the pandemic.

New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announced last week that the state would roll out an antibody testing program he called the most aggressive in the nation to help get a better understanding of exactly how far coronavirus has spread.

The human body develops antibodies to combat a pathogen it has encountered, which means that anybody confirmed to have coronavirus antibodies must have had and recovered from coronavirus. Antibodies

also help the body fight off future infections from those same pathogens, and their presence in many cases

means the people who have particular antibodies are now immune to the disease that prompted their creation.

While scientists are not yet entirely sure if coronavirus antibodies provide immunity to COVID-19, Cuomo said that seeing how many New Yorkers have them is a crucial step on the road to rousing the state from its shutdown.

“Any plan to start to reopen the economy has to be based on data and testing, and we have to make sure our antibody and diagnostic testing is up to the scale we need so we can safely get people back to work,” Cuomo said.

“This will be the first true snapshot of exactly how many people were infected by COVID-19 and where we are as a population and will help us to reopen and rebuild without jeopardizing what we’ve already accomplished.”

“We’ve actually been working with some of the antibody tests for the last two or three weeks or so,” Dr. Dwayne Breining, executive director of Northwell Health labs, said. “So far as part of our validation we’ve tested about 200 front-line staff members.

The test seems to be behaving the way we want it to behave, so we’re moving forward with setting up more testing and ramping up our capacity as fast as we possibly can.”

Mineola Establishment Helps Feed Frontline Workers

n order to give back to those who are helping fight the coronavirus pandemic head on, the Recovery Room Bar and Grill, which is just a stone’s throw away from NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola, decided to give back and feed the numerous doctors and nurses who work grueling hours day in and day out.

“After the governor directed that our restaurant, like so many others, could not have table seating and could only offer take out and delivery food, we had to make a decision,” Regis Gallet, who owns the Recovery Room Bar and Grill along with his wife Cristi, said. “Do we stay open or do we close and wait this out? There were many reasons why we thought we should close, but there was one thing that stood out in our minds. If everyone closes, then how will people get meals? Of course people at home can cook, but our business has long dealt with the wonderful staff at Winthrop Hospital over the years.

projects together and to work together in these times was a natural transition,” Gallet said. “As for the Mineola Junior Fire Department, Gary Mazur, the head advisor and former chief, has been a friend of mine for many years. One day, Gary contacted me and told me that the Mineola Junior Fire Department wanted to donate to the Recovery Room to make meals for the hospital. Needless to say we were extremely moved and honored to do this with them.”

The PBA also donated $1,000 to the Recovery Room, which Gallet said he’s also grateful for.

“This is a terrible difficult time for so many,” Gallet said. “So much sadness, so many good people lost, so many businesses in trouble. We just felt that we had to do our part. Our bar has been in this great village for so many years and we felt that to close at one of the darkest hours would be to let people down. So we will fight through this. We have to.”

“We started getting calls and visits from incredible people generously donating money for us to prepare meals for the hospital staff,” Gallet said, who is also a 26-year member of the Mineola Auxiliary Police Department.

“Our phone is constantly ringing with someone calling saying that they want to donate money for meals. It is an incredibly heart-warming experience.

And if it is possible to take a warm memory from a time that is so difficult as this one, then this was the way for it to happen.”

Even the Mineola Chamber of Commerce and Mineola Junior Fire Department is helping the Gallets out in their donation efforts.

“The chamber and the Recovery Room Bar have worked on a few

Former Manhasset Resident Creates Charitable Project

fter the coronavirus hit many countries and cities all around the globe, Alaina Melichar, a former Manhasset resident, decided she needed to find a way to give back during this difficult time.

Melichar, who now lives in the United Kingdom, created a charitable project called Stay Home Hoodies, which sells sweatshirts and donates 100 percent of the proceeds to COVID19-related charities in the United States and the United Kingdom.

“I grew up on Long Island and lived in NYC for many years so the current situation is quite personal,” Melichar said. “I live in London now so I feel detached from my friends and family at times. I wanted to start this project to help give back to my home state and country—while also helping here in the UK.” The sales from each of the sweatshirts are split up equally between three charities, NHS Charities Together, the UK’s National Health Service,

“I selected these charities as I believe they offer the broadest reach across the countries they support,” Melichar said.

“DirectRelief is particularly personal as I started this project one week after my mom was sent to the frontlines to assist coronavirus patients at [Winthrop] hospital. She is an x-ray technician in a smaller office whose skill set was essentially repurposed to help support nurses and assist with COVID-19 patients at the hospital. My mom is amazing and I am so proud to see how she has embraced the challenge. Given this, it was important that part of the funds raised from my project go to keep our healthcare workers protected with masks, gowns and other gear.”

Melichar began with a simple sweatshirt design which states the projects mission—to stay home and save lives.

The sweatshirts retail for $40 and are offered in a variety of colors.

As of publication, the Stay Home Hoodie website had been viewed in more than 25 countries with sales in the UK, US, Germany, Ireland and Finland. Through her charitable

project, Melichar has been able to raise a few thousand dollars so far.

“It is truly incredible and was very unexpected to see such support from all around the world,” Melichar said. “I am happy with the project’s success so far and looking forward to seeing everyone wear their hoodies in support for the amazing charities.”

Giving back during this time doesn’t stop at just sweatshirts, Melichar is currently on the waitlist to become an NHS Volunteer Responder whose job is to carry out non-medical tasks to help people in the UK. “I definitely feel like this is only a very small part and there is a lot more to do via fundraising and volunteering,” she said.

Tonsa Automotive Donates $30,000 To Local Hospitals

“Although like so many other small businesses we too are struggling, our hardships pale in comparison to those on the front lines of this pandemic, and we must take care of those who take care of us,” Jerry Thomas, managing director of Tonsa Automotive, said. “In our own small way, we feel inspired to follow the example set by those in our industry, who decades ago played a transformational role in helping improve the health of millions.”

Great Neck Library Makes Face Shields For Hospitals And First Responders In the Great Neck Library’s ongoing efforts to support the community during this difficult time, STEM Lab staff 3D printed and laser cut PPE (personal protective equipment) from home.

Adam Hinz, the library’s Youth Services coordinator, collaborated with members of his STEM Lab team to find the safest and most streamlined way to create

the shields. Hinz said he went out to collect overhead projector sheets for the mask aspect and 3D printed the visor and plastic components.

Fellow library employee Chris Van Wickler helped with managing the online file templates that Hinz said originally came from Sweden. Van Wickler converted the files to the proper dimensions.

At this point, Hinz has produced more than 90 shields.

Donations have been made directly to Northwell Health who distributes them to facilities in need.

One food bank available for people in need has been set up at the Glen Cove High School. People wishing to help can donate pasta, sauce, canned vegetables, tuna fish, cereal, rice and non-perishable food between Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to noon. For those needing food, pick up is available only on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon.

Using Data To Predict What’s Next Northwell has developed and are using new predictive models and software to support clinical decisions for patients. These tools assist clinicians who are having phone conversations with patients through telemedicine appointments; anticipating the course of the disease for inpatients who are being admitted to the hospital; and determining which patients in assisted living and other skilled nursing facilities, who are recovering from COVID-19, might be at risk of becoming sick again and returning to the hospital.

Through our clinical-prediction tools, Northwell is identifying who is at greatest risk, and what may be expected once a patient arrives at the emergency department and is admitted allowing clinicians and administration to make informed decisions and aiding in the forecasting of equipment, space and personnel needs at their hospitals.

“Northwell now has the largest COVID-19 database in the world,” McGinn and Green both said. “Our physicians and scientists are quickly utilizing this data to help care for and cure patients. While under extreme pressure to care for our patients, we feel a tremendous moral obligation to perform research that will help the rest of the country.”

Using Data To Inform Future Outbreaks Beyond the immediate benefits of harnessing our data to support the care of COVID-19 patients now, researchers are looking ahead to the impact this valuable information will have on the future of medical science.

Through data, blood samples and genetic sequencing, Northwell will be able to peel back, layer by layer, the novel coronavirus to understand what makes COVID-19 different from the thousands of other viruses in this world.

Our knowledge will ultimately lead to new vaccines, better diagnostic tests, more effective treatment and a more

informed understanding of how to prevent and minimize future outbreaks like this from ever happening again.

“This is a public health crisis and touches every aspect of our lives in physical, mental and emotional ways,” McGinn said. “Through our efforts to collect, study, analyze and utilize data, we are setting the standard of care for COVID-19. EVERYTHING’S BETTER with BACON Why the bacon trend will never end

Bacon is the breakfast food that defies mealtimes. Smokey, salty, slightly sweet and crispy, in today’s bacon-obsessed foodie culture it is almost hard to imagine a time when Americans all but outlawed bacon for its high fat content. In the 90s, low-calorie, low-fat defined dietary guidelines, but the advent of high-fat, low-carb diets brought bacon back into the mainstream. Some food historians give credit to Atkins, and more recently Paleo and Keto, to making it acceptable to moderately indulge in strips of bacon as part of a regular eating plan.

hey didn’t have to tell us twice. The average American eats 18 pounds of bacon a year for breakfast, lunch and dinner. In fact, one poll indicated that 65 percent of Americans would support making bacon the official food of the United States.

Bacon mania has led to the rise of some, um, interesting flavor combinations. Infiltrating bakeries in the form of bacon maple doughnuts and bars as candied bacon Bloody Marys. Bacon flavoring (with no actual bacon included) alone has become somewhat of a phenomenon.

Take bacon beer, bacon lollipops, bacon cotton candy, bacon potato chips and bacon mustard. Some of the options are even vegan.

Even as these products teeter the

line between novelty and downright absurd (manufacturers might have jumped the shark with bacon toothpaste), the trend is not sizzling out.

Global bacon sales are forecasted to increase by 4.17 percent between 2019 and 2024, with North America continuing to hold on tight to its position as bacon’s largest market, according to the market research firm Mordor Intelligence. So while it may seem that our nation can’t love bacon more than they already do, it appears our hearts will grow fonder still.

Perhaps it’s bacon’s versatility (and that it’s slightly sinful, nutritionally speaking) that gives it its added allure. Because innovative chefs have made it clear that bacon is as much an ingredient as it is a standalone food, here are a few out of the box ways to enjoy it to the fullest.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich with Bacon, Brie and Pear 4 slices center-cut bacon, cut into 1/2-inch thick pieces 2 pats unsalted butter, room temperature 2 slices bread, 1-inch thick 2 to 4 oz brie ¼-inch thick slice pear Salt and black pepper Directions: Cook bacon on the stovetop until golden brown and crisp. Remove extra grease with a paper towel. Break each piece into fourths, set aside. Spread butter on 1 side of each slice of bread.

Bacon Cheesy Crinkle Cut French Fries 1 (20 oz) bag crinkle cut French fries 1 lb. bacon 1 medium yellow onion chopped 8 oz shredded cheddar cheese Directions: Cook bacon on the stovetop, keeping flexible. Cook French fries according to package directions. Place fries on a broiler-proof dish or platter. Sprinkle with cheese, onions and bacon.

Keto Grilled Bacon Wrapped Shrimp 8 slices bacon 16 jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined ½ tsp chili powder 2 tsp lime juice Directions: keeping bacon flexible. Enjoy The Silence There have been many quotes over the years about the benefits of sitting in silence. When we sit with ourselves, we find things that we may have otherwise hidden because we were often too distracted by activity to notice.

For example, when I become overly fatigued, I reach for a cookie or a piece of chocolate.

The sweets have a “soothing” effect on my psyche, although they also have a detrimental effect on my physique. It’s been said that when we sit with something that’s bothering us, as when we have overworked ourselves too hard and feel frustrated, we’re either attempting to “stuff away” our feelings or soothe them without figuring out why we’re even bothered in the first place. When we slow down and sit in the silence, we usually can figure out almost immediately what brought us to the cookie, cake or Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Silence soothes us, which is sometimes the best medicine for an otherwise troubled mind.

Because many of us have followed the guidelines set by both Governor Cuomo and President Trump, we’ve found ourselves working from home, staying at home, teaching our

Prior to the “stay home” order, occurrences such as these were rare. In this case, “silence” of human activity allowed nature to come out of hiding.

While I’m certain that many of you are itching to return to work, I’m going to suggest that you use your time at home wisely. Take a moment to sit in your yard and listen to the silence. Listen to the sound of your breath as you close your eyes. Allow the peacefulness of just being still in the moment overtake you, and let it carry you on the next spring breeze. Even if you’re feeling stressed and reaching for a sugary snack, this is the perfect moment to take the time to step back and enjoy the silence. It’s not as scary as you think, and you might learn a little about yourself and nature in the process. As the band Depeche Mode once sang, “Enjoy the silence.” It won’t last forever.

As a physician and resident of Garden City, I am compelled to implore all residents, whether they have symptoms or not, whether they have known exposures or not, to please put the health and welfare of all residents of this community before your own convenience or comfort. In order to protect others, every resident needs to wear a mask in addition to maintaining proper social distancing.

This is especially true when exercising. Until we have an effective vaccine and adequate

herd immunity, it is our responsibility to decrease the spread of this virus.

I started walking in my neighborhood for the physical and mental health benefits. I wear a facial mask and go out of my way to move or cross the street to avoid others. I was shocked when runners, bicyclists and groups of walkers without masks repeatedly came within six feet of me. It is hard to move away when a runner or a cyclist approaches quickly from behind.

healthy individuals, need to wear facial masks? Experts agree that a high percentage of individuals are asymptomatic, but capable of infecting others. Others may feel great today, but come down with symptoms (sometimes so mild that they mimic allergies or a mild cold) later. While you may feel fine and have no difficulty exercising, you may be COVID-19 positive and be unwittingly spreading this virus to others who may die from it. Wearing face masks dampens this asymptomatic spread. Masks worn in conjunction with keeping a distance of at least six feet will protect others around you and offer some protection as well.

One breathes deeper and harder when exercising.

Experts know that respiratory droplets increase and travel further from exercising individuals. This poses an even

higher risk to others. Runners and cyclists should not only wear facial masks, but keep more than six feet away from others, preferably 10 or more feet. I understand that it is uncomfortable for runners to breathe through a mask. One can wear a gaiter or bandana around the neck and pull it up when within 20 feet of another person. Running or riding a bike in the road along the curb puts one within only three to four feet from a person walking on the sidewalk. Runners and cyclists in the road near the curb should move away from walkers on the sidewalk.

It is difficult being cooped up indoors and exercising is crucial to physical and mental wellbeing, but we need to all wear masks and keep six to 10 feet apart to protect all residents. It is a serious matter of life and death.

arden City High School senior Stephen Michael has been selected as the recipient of this year’s Garden City Foundation’s Althea Robinson Excellence in Business Education Scholarship, winning $3,000. Michael will receive the award at the Garden City High School’s senior awards ceremony set for June 4.

Selected by the GCHS Business Education and Guidance Departments, Michael is the student judged to best exemplify the spirit of GCHS senior the Garden Stephen City business Michael community by achieving academic success in the area of business.

Michael is a member of Garden City High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and currently serves as president. He has participated in numerous business competitions and earned first place in personal finance and business law. Michael placed second in business calculations and second and fourth place in securities and investments.

This fall, Michael will be attending New York University Stern School of Business with plans to major in finance.

NEW HYDE PARK New Hyde Park Road School Math Enrichment sixth graders have been participating in a virtual, free Math Madness bracket tournament offered by AreteLabs.

Students Disha Chakraborty, Shohom Chakraborty, Carmela Drossman-Schlossberg, Sherwin Fernandes, Aaryan Kapoor, Darsh Mirchandani, Ariana Muhammad and Krish Singh have been having Google Meets each week to discuss the tournament questions with district math enrichment teacher Tammie Svendsen. The team is competing at the middle school level against other teams, which consists of students in grades six through eighth.

During their first match, the team won, 28-0, as the other team was a no-show. For the second match, the Road School sixth graders won, 22-21, against an all-seventh grade team. The most recent match took place on April 14, with the Road School

team winning once again. The team has to win the next two brackets to advance to the final match.

MASSAPEQUA Massapequa was one of 754 districts in the United States to place on the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation’s [NAMM] 2020 list of Best Communities for Music Education.

The recognition from NAMM spotlights school districts where teachers, administrators, parents, students and community leaders come together to ensure that music remains a valued part of education. The best communities designation is given to districts that demonstrate an exceptionally high commitment and access to music education based on a survey that measures multiple factors.

FARMINGDALE The Farmingdale School District helped local hospitals with badly-needed medical supplies. Administrators, teachers and students all mobilized to take an inventory of what they could donate to those working on the front line.

Lead nurse Dawn Esposito, who oversees the school district’s 14 nurses, contacted Jim Spencer from Catholic Health Services, who arrived at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School to pick up the donations, which had been collected in the back of superintendent Defendini’s truck.

Farmingdale Schools Science Director Dr. Kristen Cummings gave an inventory of the items that she and the science teachers gathered from the labs at the middle school and high school: 14 boxes of small and medium exam gloves, 101 clear goggles, 152 colored goggles, 33 safety glasses and a UV goggle cabinet that decontaminates them after use. Also included were 500 masks, donated by a friend of Albany Avenue Assistant

The Farmingdale Interact Club donated the balance of their club funds, which was $600 to the district-wide effort.

HICKSVILLE For the fifth consecutive year, Hicksville Public Schools has been designated as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation. Now in its 21st year, the designation is awarded to school districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in their efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

PLAINVIEW Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the PlainviewOld Bethpage Chamber of Commerce has adapted to assist its valued members and the community.

Beginning in mid-March, chamber president Andrew Lamkin provided supportive weekly updates on the chamber website with valuable financial information for small businesses.

Workshops were then offered by members who had the skill sets to guide others regarding employment issues and personal wellness as the weeks wore on. Options For The MTA Requesting A COVID-19 Bailout There are other solutions for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) asking for additional $3.9 billion from Washington. The MTA has placed their $51 billion 2020-24 five-year capital plan on hold due to funding assumptions that are no longer realistic.

This new bailout request from the federal government is on top of the $3.8 billion emergency COVID-19 funding that Uncle Sam made available on March 25. How long will it take for the MTA to apply for and actually spend the $3.8 billion under future Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grants? Based upon past history for previous FTA grants from 9/11, the 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the 2012 Hurricane Sandy Relief and Resiliency supplemental emergency appropriations, it will take several years. Have they presented to the FTA a list of eligible expenses for reimbursement as part of a grant application? Do they even have a cash flow plan to spend these funds once a grant is approved?

There is no indication that they have ever taken advantage of the FTA expanded eligibility of federal

For one science and health-focused family in Long Island’s Catholic school community the global pandemic and cancellation of this year’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Fair gave them the time and the incentive they needed to go above and beyond in the most unexpected of places.

Like the rest of us, the Stadelman family—Erin and Robert Stadelman, and their son Michael— are respecting the quarantine order by staying home. Also like the rest of us, the Stadelmans wanted to do something to help. Unlike the rest of us, the Stadelman family used their time at home to build a ventilator. Intrigued by the global shortage of medical ventilators, especially in New York, the East Islip family was inspired to build a ventilator in their kitchen with items they

look a little more like a laboratory. The couple’s scientific minds were passed down to their son. Michael loves helping his dad, so they came up with the innovative idea to potentially help others during the crisis.

As both an EMT and an engineer, Robert decided to test if a manually operated Bag Valve Mask (BVM), typically used on ambulances to ventilate patients by hand squeezing, could be transformed into an automatic ventilator. Turns out you can, quickly and inexpensively to boot. A couple 2x4s from the hardware shop, some plywood and an air piston became the essential elements of the at-home ventilator. The project took about a week, and most of the time spent was waiting for parts to arrive from retailers.

“When officials kept talking about the shortage of ventilators, I thought what if we could do something that could squeeze the BVM automatically,” Robert said.

“I realized we just needed a timer and an air

pistol to make that happen. We put the two together and made it work.”

During the build, Robert taught Michael about the inner components and machinations of a ventilator, about BVMs, what a piston is and does and Michael learned to work with electronics and circuits.

“Michael learned a whole lot about ventilators, electronic components and a host of other scientific concepts,” Erin said. “It was a great science lesson with a real life application.”

For Robert, this was a proof of concept prototype. And while the need for ventilators is decreasing as New York continues to flatten the curve, Robert is confident the model could be employed to save lives.

“We built this with readily available items,” Robert said. “There is nothing special or custom about it. Anyone can make one. I’m sure with a little work we could improve this to be a viable emergency ventilator.”

The Power Of Presence For Children In A Time Of Crisis T

he latest research on brain development shows us that adult presence literally impacts how a child’s brain gets wired. During these uncertain and destabilizing times, our presence can help our children feel safe and secure. It can help build the resilience they will need to get through this crisis. Research shows that one of the best predictors for how happy and successful a child will be is whether that child had an adult who consistently showed up for them. Right now, parents are juggling working, homeschooling and parenting. Being present may feel like another exhausting ask.

Showing up does not have to take a lot of time or energy.

Being together is not the same as being present. Despite our physical closeness now, there are times when we may feel distant or disconnected. All of our responsibilities have been brought to the center of our minds and the center of our living rooms and creates endless distractions. We can still find a way to connect with our children to make them feel seen, understood, safe and secure.

Make It Fun

Set aside time where you can ditch the cell phone and laptop and connect with your children through meaningful and fun interactions. Play helps our children process what they are going through so it can serve as a stress reliever as well as an opportunity for bonding. Get on the floor, get outside or even get on the other end of the video game controller to connect with your child through play. Think about things you like to do to relieve stress and use that as a means to connect.

If you like to exercise, put on some music and dance with your child. If you enjoy cooking, invite your child into the kitchen to cook with you. If we can find time to allow children

to fill up on our positive attention, we may find that they are more secure and less anxious.

Practice Empathy

Negative emotions are often expressed through negative behavior. Approach your child with calmness and empathy. Your empathetic response allows your child’s brain to feel safe and gives him the ability to calm down and reason. Discipline is going to look different during quarantine and that is OK. When your children are under the weather, you most likely adjust your responses because you know they need a little more TLC and understanding. This crisis is not much different. Validate feelings.

“I imagine you are feeling really angry” or “it looks like you’re having a really hard time.” Children need understanding and compassion now more than ever before to help them through this very difficult time.

Respond with empathy first, and then remind your child what the rules and expectations are. After they are calm, you can discuss why their behavior was inappropriate or hurtful.

Listen With Full Attention

Are you communicating with our children through closed doors, from different rooms or with your back turned and attention on something else? Our body language matters in making our children feel heard and understood. When possible, put down what you are doing and physically turn your body and attention towards your child. Repeat back what you heard so you know you understand correctly. When it isn’t possible to listen with full attention, let your child know when would be a better time to talk. Focusing on connection and presence is not a permissive way to parent.

Rules and boundaries can and should still exist. The power of presence helps your child co-regulate and feel safe.

he coronavirus pandemic has upended daily routines. The Monday through Friday rush of getting ready and out the door is slowly becoming a fleeting memory.

For many, commutes now consist of hoofing the 40-feet from the bedroom to the home office in the morning.

And while this new normal comes with its own set of unique stresses, one reward is the opportunity to stay home and foster closer relationships to our family members, furry counterparts included.

We may not know the day when households will return to their regularly scheduled programming of physically going to school and an office building, but the countdown is on now that the curve is flattening.

So how can we help pets readjust to life after COVID-19 when owners are no longer there 24/7? Chewy vet expert Dr. Jennifer Coates has some tips to ease the transition and reduce possible separation anxiety.

his is a crisis. That is what philanthropist, entrepreneur, New York Times bestselling author and producer Bethenny Frankel deals with on a day-to-day basis as she helps people around the world who are in need. And with a serious and troubling global pandemic that is gripping the world, Frankel’s lifesaving efforts are needed now more than ever.

Not fulfilled just by business alone, Frankel’s life experiences have inspired her to help women find their own strength and resilience with the launch of her bstrong initiatives. In 2017, Frankel launched her bstrong disaster relief program, which provides real-time emergency assistance to people who are in crisis. Frankel’s bstrong works with community partners on the ground throughout affected areas to assess the most pressing needs and provide help. Bstrong has been working together with notable charities, such as Delivering Good and has partnered with Global Empowerment Mission (GEM).

“Truly, it evolved,” Frankel said about how her disaster relief initiative came to be. “I had no insight into what disaster relief was, nor would I ever think it applied to me. I started with Hurricane Harvey, moved into Maria in Puerto Rico and have worked on fires, earthquakes and disasters worldwide. We hit the ground running first and provided aid, money and relief as quickly, efficiently and effectively as possible. We also still provide aid long after the headlines fade.

We are still building schools and homes in the Bahamas. We still help Puerto Rico and recently, we completed two Australia missions.”

Focusing on the pandemic, Frankel and her team have been coordinating getting supplies for hospitals around the country, which Frankel said is a lot of work.

“It’s very intense, very stressful, very time sensitive and a war,” Frankel said. “Whether aid is real, counterfeit, a wild goose chase, a bait and switch or a Ponzi scheme, it is a crap shoot. It’s a roller coaster and you must have the stomach, gut instinct and bullshit meter for it. Things need to be vetted, inspected, attained and allocated simultaneously.”

So how does Frankel feel knowing that she is making a difference in so many fellow New Yorkers lives with her relief aid?

“It feels like my obligation,” she said. “I have a skill set, so I simply execute. It’s an instinct and I become a machine that just turns on and goes. I

am a proud New Yorker and people always ask me what connects me to a certain place. We don’t get involved based on where a disaster is, although I adore New York, Puerto Rico, Texas, the Bahamas and Australia.

I get involved if I can find my access or entry point and can have a significant impact.”

Frankel and her team have also been putting together coronavirus kits to help prevent the spread of the virus, while also helping people who are now in dire financial straits.

“The coronavirus kits began this mission to provide prevention kits, including hand sanitizer, wipes, masks, gloves, hydration kits and immune builders,” Frankel said. “We pivoted our mission to protective gear because the city provided meals for the children at home from school. We will still distribute bstrong cash cards to impoverished parents, but the major crisis became apparent to us (entry point) as masks and gowns since the need was so incredibly dire.”

So what is next for Frankel in the coming year?

“My show, The Big Shot, is launching in 2021 and will begin shooting in the fall,” she said. “I also have a few very big exciting announcements in the next few weeks.

Now is the time to focus on relief work.

There will be plenty of time for business. I think that this reset will change businesses forever. People will open their eyes to a whole new world of doing business. I’ve been working in my pajamas and out of my office for over a decade. Everyone is catching up now.”

Although there were some concerns about launching the book during this pandemic, Poumpouras feels the book will help people find comfort in themselves especially during this time.

“I wrote this book to help people, Poumpouras said. “I didn’t write it so I could see it in a store on a shelf. I didn’t write it so it could be on a bestseller list, although that’s a great thing. I wrote it to be of service to people, everything else is secondary.”

Musicians turn hard times into art

In the times that we are all currently living in, which is a scary and weird one, the power of music can sometimes preoccupy ourselves into forgetting some of our problems for a bit. During a time of reflection that we are all currently undertaking, musicians around the world are also taking this difficult time to put out new music that reflects what we’re all feeling in a creative way. Here are some brand new songs that have been released this past month from some of our favorite artists.

“Levels Of Concern” Twenty One Pilots

Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun of the popular alternative rock band Twenty One Pilots released their latest song “Levels of Concern,” which is already hitting the airwaves, earlier this month. The song’s lyrics reference the anxiety that is created by the pandemic. The band’s music video for “Levels of Concern” was filmed in Joseph’s and Dun’s home while under the national stay-at-home orders. Joseph and Dun donated a portion of the proceeds from their new song to Crew Nation—a global relief fund for live music crews that is helping to financially support them.

“Better Days” - OneRepublic

OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder was inspired to write “Better Days,” which will be featured on the band’s upcoming fifth studio album Human, while in quarantine himself.

Interestingly enough, Tedder and some of his bandmates were exposed to someone who had coronavirus while touring abroad in London. “Better Days” talks about—you guessed it—the better days that will eventually be ahead of all of us once we get through the pandemic. Through September, a portion of the streams of “Better Days” will be donated to MusiCares’ COVID-19 Relief Fund to help artists whose livelihoods have been affected by the virus.

“Six Feet Apart” - Alec Benjamin

Singer-songwriter Alec Benjamin released his new song appropriately titled “Six Feet Apart” earlier this month. The song examines the effects of social distancing and how life as we know it has changed in just a few months time. Once the song was released, a lot of people on social media have commented that they can painfully relate to the deeply personal lyrics that Benjamin sings in his new ballad.

“Lay Your Head On Me” Marcus Mumford

Although not directly tied to the coronavirus pandemic, Marcus Mumford from the band Mumford & Sons has teamed up with DJ Major Lazer and singer-songwriter MØ for the song “Lay Your Head On Me.” Most of the songs lyrics reflect what a lot of people are feeling these days.

The song’s music video, which was released just last week, includes 177 clips from 28 countries showcasing worldwide solidarity in the midst of the global pandemic while also celebrating the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.
