United Way of Long Island starts fund to help low-income workers BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO

ith one in seven Americans losing their jobs over the past month and one in three Long Islanders unable to withstand a sudden loss of wages, United Way of Long Island recently launched United Together: A Response Fund for COVID-19. The fund is helping Long Island families as the current health and economic crisis progresses. Aid will be used to help eligible low-income applicants who have become newly unemployed or furloughed meet their critical basic needs of food and household supplies via retail gift cards. United Way started accepting applications at the beginning of April, and applicants must meet the monthly eligibility guidelines. With some economists predicting unemployment numbers possibly hitting 20 percent by the end of April, which rises to Depression Era levels, and New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo announcing the extended shutdown of nonessential businesses until May 15, this financial crunch only looks to worsen. The existence of the United Together program is now that much more crucial, according to the leadership of United Way of Long Island.

“We are committed to giving as many families as possible some relief in the form of a gift card,” United Way of Long Island President and CEO Theresa A. Regnante said. “When there is a lack of, or limited income, it can be very difficult to decide what you will have to give up. So we are pleased to be able to help our neighbors when every dollar

counts. We are grateful to all of our generous supporters who make this fund possible.” A number of corporate funders have stepped forward to help with the heavy lifting on this program. Organizations include Bank of America, Bethpage Federal Credit Union, City National Bank, GEICO, National Grid, Northville Industries, PSEG Long Island, The Countess Moira Charitable Foundation, The New York Jets, TriState Capital Bank and UPS, along with hundreds of generous individual donors. Small Business Thanks Front-Line Workers In A Sweet Way

he coronavirus has forced many non-essential businesses across New York to shut their doors, but for one small fundraising company in Melville, it was an opportunity to give back to the people battling the disease every day. Miss Chocolate Fundraising works to give schools, daycare centers, religious organizations and various other groups throughout the country the resources to raise funds in the tri-state area. They’ve helped thousands of schools reach their fundraising goals. “Since all of my customers were closed, I wanted to figure out a way to help,” Larry Hirschheimer, one of Miss Chocolate Fundraising’s owners, said. “My trucks were sitting with nowhere to go, my warehouse had products with no orders to fill and I had a lot of unexpected free time.” That’s when Miss Chocolate

Fundraising partnered with YumEarth, an organic candy company, to figure out a way to give back to hospital workers. For Ron Kaiser, one of the owners

of Miss Chocolate Fundraising, that mission was deeply personal. “My son is an ICU doctor in one of New York City’s 100-percent coronavirus hospitals,” Kaiser said. “More than ever in my life I felt a strong feeling to be able to do something to show my appreciation for people who are going above and beyond.” YumEarth donated roughly 1,000 cases of assorted organic snacks and Miss Chocolate Fundraising stepped up to donate 4,000 candy bars to every hospital they traveled to. In one week, the company made deliveries to 11 hospitals including Stony Brook Hospital, SUNY Downstate, North Shore University Hospital, St. Joseph Hospital, Long Island Jewish Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine and Mather Hospital. “I’m sure it’s not enough snacks for all of the workers, but every little bit I would imagine helps,” Hirschheimer said. The two companies plan on expanding their efforts to hospitals in New Jersey and Connecticut. Maureen Eng has been a nurse at Long Island Jewish Medical Center for 40 years, and is used to working in the elective surgery unit. Now, her job involves helping COVID-19 patients during her 12-hour shift. “We now have to wear the N95 masks which are very stifling,” Eng said. “You can’t take it off if you’re in an open unit. I can’t just grab a glass of water,.” Eng said it’s not always easy working long shifts on your feet with all of the protective equipment on, but she’s thankful for the support the staff is receiving from the people giving back

to the hospitals. “After 12 hours in a hospital, you kind of feel like there is no outside world,” she said. “The donations remind you that there’s an outside world.” Vincenza Genna, who works with patient and family centered care at North Shore University Hospital, is in awe of the amount of people reaching out and trying to help. “It’s amazing how the community can come together and support the staff,” Genna said. Despite the struggles inside the hospitals, Hirschheimer and Kaiser said each worker receiving the donations had a contagious positive spirit that they could feel after each delivery. “It was truly incredible how welcoming these hospital workers were,” Hirschheimer said. “It’s something I didn’t expect, but these workers are so special and deserve to be thanked for all that they do.” Kaiser said he’s grateful that he can reach out in any way possible and help those on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic. “It truly makes me happy to be able to do a little something that for one moment may make someone happy and appreciated for what they are doing,” Kaiser said. Nobody was able to hug or shake hands with the staff on the deliveries, but Amanda Suleman, who works at Long Island Jewish Medical Center assures everyone that there is a lot of appreciation throughout the entire hospital. “What you bring are smiles to our faces,” Suleman said. “You can’t see it under our masks, but our eyes show it.”

Local Boy Scout Makes Face Shields For Healthcare Workers BY CAROLINE RYAN

obin Fanning-Hughes, a ninth grader from Port Washington and a member of the Boy Scouts of America Troop No. 7 has been using his own 3D printer to make face shields for healthcare workers on the frontlines fighting the coronavirus. Hughes began printing the face shields in early April after realizing how desperately healthcare workers needed personal protection equipment (PPE) to protect themselves. “Workers weren’t getting the proper or enough protection to be working safely and I knew I could make these,” Hughes said. To make the face shields, Hughes downloaded a design file and converted the file to the printer’s code. He put the design file on an SD card, and then began the process of creating a face shield. Each shield is made out of transparency sheets, which create the clear part of the shield and is tied together with three rubber bands, which help to hold pieces together. On April 11, Hughes delivered his

first batch of face shields to ColumbiaPresbyterian Hospital and has been printing them every day since. When he first began printing the shields, it took him approximately 3.5 hours to complete, but he has gradually been able to reduce the time down to less than two hours, making approximately eight each day. “I realized that this virus and this whole situation is more serious than I thought,” Hughes said. “Helping out just a little bit is really appreciated by others. I wanted to help the medical people who are risking their own

lives to help those who are sick with COVID-19.” Hughes feels that being a Boy Scout has taught him the importance of helping others and has helped him to execute a project of this magnitude. “Boy Scouts has been life changing,” Hughes said. “It has taught me a lot of things and it makes me feel more confident.” Hughes’ scout master, Andy Johns helped him organize the project, putting him in contact with healthcare workers who were in need of PPE. Johns also put him in contact with

other people who own 3D printers so that they too could make the face shields. Hughes wrote out a list of instructions and provided photos to people so they could learn to make the shields as well. Since Hughes began printing the face shields, he has been able to donate more than 90 to various hospitals in the area including Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, Maimonides Medical Center, New York Presbyterian-Queens and NYU Hospital. Hughes is hopeful that hospitals will soon be able to get proper PPE and won’t need to rely on everyday people to create them. But until then, he plans to print as many as he can to donate to those on the frontlines. Aside from the face shields, Hughes has also been able to make other items with his 3D printer including measuring cups, an iPad stand and a spade for the garden. n light of the current coronavirus situation, the Sands Point Preserve has moved its education and fitness classes to a virtual setting while the preserve is temporarily closed to protect the health and safety of their employees and visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic. Last week, the preserve began offering virtual art, yoga and science in nature classes for children ages 3-10, as well as an Earth Expeditions class, a science class for middle school aged children in grades 6-8. Each class focuses on a specific activity or project that the children can participate in from the safety of their home. The Earth Expedition class takes place each Monday from 3 to 4 p.m. During the class, teachers work with children on different activities such as learning to plant seeds, or going on a scavenger hunt in their backyards to learn about

wildlife and the environment. “There is a lot of flexibility for families,” Beth Horn, the executive director for the Sands Point Preserve, said. “At the heart of this is really a desire to offer families a way to give their children really good experiences, while they are required to be at home and not only is it flexible and welcoming, it is also a way for children to connect with not only the educators, but also other children their own age.” While there were some initial challenges with moving in-person classes to a virtual setting, the educators at the Preserve rose to the challenge to keep these classes going. “All of our educators jumped right in and were able to adapt all of their lessons and the parents have been really supportive and positive as well,” Tracy Strianese, education director for the Sands Point Preserve, said. “The kids also like to share either what they found outside, or their

art work and I think it’s nice for them to be able to share it with somebody else that’s not their mom or their brother.” On April 27 at 4 p.m. the Preserve will also be holding a free virtual story time session. The author and illustrator of the book The Boy and the Boy King will be holding a live story telling followed by an interactive portion. The book follows the themes of imagination, adventure and friendship. “We’re so excited that the co-creators of this are going to be doing this special presentation,” Horn said. “Storytelling is just so marvelous. I think it helps families especially with little children build some structure for their day.” Along with the children’s classes and special events, the Preserve is also offering virtual Meditation and Qi Gong fitness classes for adults. The adult meditation class takes place every Monday at 11:45 a.m. and Qi Gong class takes place every Tuesday at 10 a.m. Each class

Beneath The Surface Hugh Jackman’s new film shows that the truth always prevails BY ANTHONY MURRAY

s a child growing up, the multifaceted Hugh Jackman always had a love and passion for acting since it always felt like home to him. “I enjoyed the camaraderie and the family of it,” Jackman said of his first years as an actor. “It was like my tribe. You know when you’re just with those people you feel like you can just be yourself? We used to put on plays outside of school and put on a play every semester because I absolutely loved it. Later, I realized I’m someone who is fascinated by humanity, their motivations, why we do things and what the world is about. I was always fascinated by history, too. I graduated as a journalism major from college, which is around storytelling, understanding human nature and trying to get to the truth. So I think all those things contributed to becoming an actor.” That love and passion has led Jackman to catapult into superstardom, where he’s starred in dozens of films, including the X-Men series as Wolverine, Les Misérables and The Greatest Showman, among other timeless and countless movies. Now, Jackman is tackling his latest role as disgraced Roslyn School District Superintendent Frank Tassone in HBO’s newest film Bad Education, which was filmed on Long Island. Inspired by true events of a rather painful time that the Roslyn School District faced in the early 2000s, Bad Education, which is written by Roslyn native Mike Makowsky

and directed by Cory Finley, follows the story of Tassone and his right-hand woman Pam Gluckin, who is portrayed by actress Allison Janney, who both reigned over the Roslyn School District as it was on the verge of the nation’s top spot, spurring record-setting college admissions and soaring property values. However, when a multi-million dollar embezzlement scheme surfaces that threatens to destroy all that they’ve built, Tassone is forced to maintain order and secrecy by whatever means necessary. The darkly comical film highlights the deficiencies of the public education system in the U.S. while examining the broader forces that foster greed, corruption and lack of accountability in our institutions. Unaware of the prior events that unfolded in Roslyn, Jackman was drawn to the script just by its shocking and surprising story. “I read the script and I said, ‘Oh, this is an amazing story,’” Jackman said. “I had no idea this happened. The script itself, I couldn’t work out from reading it what genre or tone it was whether it had a Coen brothers feel or if it was more of a thriller. It felt like it straddled different worlds and sometimes, I felt that it was difficult to pull off. My agent sent me Cory Finley’s first film, Thoroughbreds, and I was 20 minutes into watching it and I was like, ‘I’m doing this movie’ because that is exactly what he achieved in Thoroughbreds. So it was a mixture of the story, the character and then ultimately I think Corey as a director [that drew me to the film].” Once signing on to do the film, Jackman said he did mountains of research to learn all

he could about Tasssone and the scandal that rocked Roslyn to its core. “I didn’t speak to Frank himself, but I hired a researcher and there’s a lot on the public record,” Jackman said. “There was lots of video and the writer Mike Makowsky is also from the school. So we had a lot of information and a lot to go on. I did loads and loads of research and then, basically from there, I had a dialect coach. We did a lot of work on costumes and fat suits. We rehearsed quite a lot, which is great and went from there.” So how would Jackman describe Tassone, who led quite a surprising double life outside of school? “Teachers have to know who they’re teaching, know how to get stuff across and how to get their students’ trust and confidence,” Jackman said. “So he started as a teacher and he genuinely had that altruistic wonderful sense of teaching to begin with of making education better for kids all over the country. He had a doctorate from Columbia and was a very smart man. He understood the system and he managed to get Roslyn to number four in the country. I think he was the highest paid superintendent in the country and he was highly sought after. He started many programs, which by are now standard across the country. “He was a gifted educator. I don’t think he ever saw himself as a Machiavellian master manipulator trying to get out of what he wanted. He really thought of himself as the best. That was what fascinates me about this story is that he gradually made himself believe it was OK for him to do the things he did. When he

was sentenced they said he stole $2.2 million. He very defensively said, ‘I did not. I stole $1.1 million.’ He thought that was vindication. The other million he was spending on teachers and valuing them. He justified everything. What the movie did is show how that was possible. How do ‘good people’ and upstanding public servants go this far off track? It all started with a Greek salad and a soda with a colleague at a local restaurant. That’s what fascinated me.” Realizing that the film will drudge up difficult feelings once again for the people of Roslyn who experienced the scandal firsthand, Jackman said it is still an important story to tell. “I feel like a sense of responsibility for every character that I play,” Jackman said. “It’s a painful period in Roslyn’s history. I think it’s a cautionary tale. I still think it’s worth telling, but I know that it’s going to be painful for people who went through it to have this all brought back up again and have their school name brought up again 15 years later when things have been forgotten. I understand for certain people and that’s why I do mountains of research to make sure that what we’re doing is accurate and then also why we’re doing it is important. It’s not just to titillate, entertain or throw mud at certain people. It’s about understanding human nature and making sure this stuff doesn’t happen again.” Also starring in the film alongside Jackman and Janney is actor and comedian Ray Romano, who portrays school board president Bob Spicer. “Both of them I love and they’re so down to earth,” Jackman said. “I remember sitting outside our trailer that I shared with Ray, and we were sitting on the step and we’re in a parking lot in Levittown and across the parking lot, which was deserted, was a gas station and a comedy place in the most random position in the middle of nowhere. Ray is like, ‘I used to play there every week.’ Allison and I both came from theater, so we kind of have that in common and the camaraderie amongst all people in the theater.” Jackman said there is an important story to be told within this film that dives deeper into truth and understanding. “The character that was played by Geraldine [Viswanathan], Rachel Bhargava, showed that corruption or lack of truth can actually be spotted by anyone,” Jackman explained. “It takes a lot of courage for a young person to take on those authority figures like teachers, superintendents and a school board. She instinctively knew that there was something wrong. None of us are actually above slipping from the truth. We’re not all going to end up stealing $12 million, but all of us on some level

That’s what this cautionary tale is about.” Jackman is also quite charitable, being involved in numerous types of nonprofit organizations that help people around the world. “We have the Laughing Man Foundation, which is part of the coffee company that we have as a family,” Jackman said. “We give all our profits back to the farmers. We do a lot of work with the Actor’s Fund, my wife has two organizations Adopt Change and Hopeland, which is basically centered around kids. I’m an ambassador for World Vision and the Fight Cancer Foundation, so I’m lucky enough to

work with a number of organizations.” So what else does Jackman have planned for the rest of the year? “The only thing that I have planned is The Music Man [on Broadway],” he said. “We are currently due to start rehearsals on June 29. The first previews are September 15, but of course we’ll have to see how things shake out. I’m not doing anything before then, so I’ll be back on Broadway when everyone is ready.” Bad Education premieres on Saturday, April 25, at 8 p.m. ET on HBO. The film will also be available on HBO On Demand, HBO NOW, HBO GO and partners’ streaming platforms.

Salvatore Joseph Massa, born in 1932 in Brooklyn and formerly of Mineola, courageously passed on April 12. Sal was predeceased by his wife of 47 years, Phyllis R. Massa. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Linda (Scott), Sal (Carol) and ex-spouse Pat and Laura (Mitchell); by his grandchildren Ross (Ngoc), Tara (Jim), Lauren, Maria, Sal and David; by his great grandchildren Harrison and Harley; by his surviving brothers Nick, Tony and Gene. Sal worked in the insurance industry, but his heart was always with baseball. When he failed to make it into professional baseball as a pitcher his hobby became pitching for the Long Island League where he did face Carl Yastrzemski and his father. Later on he was a coach for the Mineola Little League. He was a wonderful man and devoted father and grandfather. He was always a calming force in crisis for his family. Even when he knew he only had a few hours to live, he was more concerned about his family and their future lives then himself.
