n the days and weeks following the 9/11 terrorist attack on New York City, thousands of New Yorkers wrote “Thank you” notes to first responders. Now, in the middle of a battle between healthcare workers and the coronavirus, the same concept is being utilized. Not only are children in Nassau County being encouraged to send out “Thank you” notes to first responders, but they should also write them to healthcare workers, who are risking their own lives and those of family members while saving lives. While nurses are known to work incredibly long, grueling shifts, battling the coronavirus has created a new challenge to those dedicated to saving others. That’s what prompted Nassau County Legislator John R. Ferretti Jr. (R—Levittown) to create the Letters to Our Heroes campaign last week. “Parents are working from home and kids are home from school,” Ferretti said outside of his Levittown home. “While many of us are home, my family included, our first responders—police officers, firemen, EMS and paramedics, along with our doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other healthcare workers—are out on the front lines 24/7. They are working to contain this outbreak and keep our community safe.” For the first week of the program, Ferretti’s office received letters and drawings from children throughout the county via email and in the physical mail. The ones sent through the mail will be quarantined for a week prior to being delivered to local precincts, fire houses and other healthcare facilities. The letters will be delivered in the coming days and weeks as the battle against the coronavirus continues. Ferretti’s two children, 3-year-old Natalie, and 7-year-old Johnny, each kicked off the campaign by drawing thank you notes of their own. Natalie’s note read, “keep working” and “thank you,” featuring plenty of stars, a rainbow, an ambulance and a police station, while Johnny colored in the words “thank you” on his. “Our community has time and time again shown our ability to come

Nourishing Our Medical Workers Chicken Soup for Health Care Responders initiative launches

ith health care workers serving as soldiers on the front line of fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, a number of businesses are working to deliver free meals to medical professionals tirelessly batting in hospitals and medical facilities around the country. Already, initiatives like Feed the Frontlines NYC and Meals4Heroes, along with large chains like Taco Bell, Sweetgreen and Kentucky Fried Chicken are stepping up to feed these medical professionals. The same is happening in Long Island’s backyard, as former representative Steve Israel, Ben’s Deli and United Way of Long Island recently announced a partnership to provide food to medical professionals in hospitals called “Chicken Soup for Health Care Responders.” The inspiration came to Israel during his self quarantine over a take-out meal from Ben’s Deli. A family member, who is a doctor, told him that some hospital staff responding to the coronavirus were experiencing food shortages. Israel contacted Ben’s Deli owner Ronnie Dragoon and United Way of Long Island President and CEO Theresa Regnante to collaborate on what evolved into the “Chicken Soup for Health Care Responders” program. The United Way has set up a unique Chicken Soup For Health Care Responders link on their website, www. unitedwayli.org/givechickensoup. Donors can contribute any amount. Funds will be used to pay for cold cut sandwiches, hot dogs, knishes and soups. The food will be packaged to avoid contamination. Ben’s will discount the food, waive its delivery fee and distribute food to hospitals in Nassau and Suffolk. In light of equipment shortages hospitals are facing everywhere, Israel felt this was one of the most direct ways he could show his support. “We know that there are critical shortages of personal protective equipment for medical professionals,” he said. “Making sure they have food during their long shifts is easy to solve and we can do it right away. I’m so grateful to Ben’s Deli and United Way for being so responsive.” Dragoon agreed about providing this

kind of direct support. “In these troubling times, helping to keep our health care first responders nourished is something we can do now,” he said. “Ben’s Vice President Todd Silverstein will coordinate all deliveries to Nassau and Suffolk Counties. He can be reached at 516-621-3340 or on his cell phone at 516-769-7561.” Silverstein pointed out that while Ben’s will be closed on Wednesday, April 8 for Passover and reopening on Friday, April 17, he’ll still be answering his phone and arranging deliveries for when his company returns. Other organizations are already responding to the call put out by Chicken Soup For Health Care Responders. The Central Nassau County Rotary Club and Foundation is donating to the effort. or those who have been laid off from their jobs or are simply struggling to provide meals for their children and families, food pantries on Long Island are looking to help people combat food insecurity during this time. Island Harvest, a food bank whose mission is to end hunger and reduce food waste on Long Island, has been working tirelessly amid this pandemic to ensure that people don’t go hungry. “The need has increased because people have lost their jobs or been furloughed and since school is out kids are home so they are eating more meals in the house,” Randi Shubin Dresner, president and CEO of Island Harvest Food Bank, said. “Even if families wanted to go to the supermarkets to purchase products, they don’t have full shelves, so it’s forcing people to look for other alternatives.” On March 9, Island Harvest opened up their emergency resource center and began changing their business model from exclusively distributing to their network of nonprofit organizations to creating their own mobile food pantry distribution. “We started to work with the community and other organizations so that we could provide as much assistance as possible,” Dresner said. “Under normal circumstances, we depend heavily on donated products from wholesalers and distributors but we changed that model almost instantaneously. We started a purchasing program and to date we have purchased about $600,000 of products so that we could make sure that we could get as much food out into the community as possible.” The volunteers at Island Harvest have implemented certain protocols to ensure they are complying with social distancing and to ensure they are keeping themselves healthy during this time. “We’ve put a lot of protocols into place right away,” Dresner said. “We separated the food from people in our building. We moved our staff around so we don’t have as many people in our facilities. When we are in the field doing our distribution all of our teams are wearing masks and

It has been a little complicated, but we have been able to put these special protocols into place.” Unlike some food pantries, which require residents to provide necessary documentation, Island Harvest will distribute food to anyone who may need it, regardless of their financial or employment status. Island Harvest distributes food to more than 320 sites across Long Island, including nonprofit organizations, schools, community centers and veterans organizations. “If you are asking for food, we give it to you and we won’t ask questions,” Dresner said. “There are no restrictions for us with our distribution. It’s very humbling to ask for food, particularly people that are not normally on the recipient side. Many of the people that are getting food now are people that were contributors or food donors in the past. We recognize how humbling it is to stand on a line and wait for food. We don’t ask questions. We trust that if you are there it’s because you need it. Quite frankly, the coronavirus is hitting so many people and will continue to hit so many people that we know that people will need it.” Island Harvest is also accepting food donations as well as medical

supplies, as long as the products are new and unopened. “We except all kinds of donations as long as it’s new product,” Dresner said. “We are allowing food drives to happen again because we need donated food and household supplies so we can get it out to the communities.” While the severity of the coronavirus pandemic might have surprised people on Long Island, Island Harvest has been preparing since early March for this pandemic to hit. “We’re dealing with the crisis of hunger every single day, so we’re used to turning around on a dime when things change,” Dresner said. “We have answered the call for emergencies for all of our 30 years. This is obviously very different and so it’s hard to say that anybody could be prepared for this kind of pandemic. But even so we still have an emergency resource center and we opened it up the minute we could respond and help.” Many school districts across Long Island are also providing grab-and-go breakfast and lunch during the week to students who may need food, without requiring them to provide any identification. Island Harvest has been working

by the New York Times estimates the current unemployment rate is probably around 13 percent. While March unemployment data for New York State is not yet available, the U.S. Department of Labor reported a sharp increase in unemployment insurance claims at the end of March. For the week ending on March 14, 14,272 New Yorkers filed for unemployment insurance. The following week, 79,999 did so. National unemployment claim statistics are even more staggering. While around 200,000 people have filed initial claims for unemployment insurance every week in the last half decade, nearly 10,000,000 did so in just the last two weeks of March. The week of March 22 saw 3.3 million claims, shattering every record since the labor department first began tracking the statistic. The following week saw twice as many claims. etermined to serve our loyal community during the pandemic, the Nassau Museum of Art moved online within days of closing our doors on March 13, the very day we were ready to open our new exhibition. Along with other art museums and educational institutions, we accelerated plans to release enhanced web content, such as lessons and games for families, virtual tours and art history for the adult learners and teaching guides for local educators, whose classes would have been coming up the driveway in a yellow bus the very next week. We hustled to load videos, Instagram posts and a trove of art history on our website and social media and the powerful response has been gratifying. “I need my art fix,” began many emails to our deserted offices (we work from home these days). We had kept our sculpture garden open for strollers, making quite sure they kept the common-sense distance apart as they admired masterworks by Fernando Botero, Mark di Suvero, Richard Serra and others. But the website became the new gallery and classroom. The sense

designer, took the day we were supposed to open, we started posting on Instagram and Facebook and our site was soon alive with new content. None of this deft response is creditable to the senescent director. My gruff dismissals of social media were for years the source of mirth among my youthful, connected colleagues. At meetings, I would rumble like the Airedale in a James Thurber cartoon at the very idea of a “selfie station.” I now admit that the Web has its virtues, including the speed with which we knew we were reaching our audience. Within hours of posting their fresh content, the art coordinator from Elmont, Zoe Sanders, was thanking our educator Rebecca Hirschwerk: “You have no idea what an absolute gift this is. I am sitting in my kitchen, working on ‘e-learning’ art for the fifth grade. I opened this email and started to cry (a little embarrassed to admit, but I feel the need to). Gorgeous, well though-out, and so age-appropriate and interesting. The fast-paced drama tells the story about the inner workings of the New York office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The show has already produced a spin-off titled FBI: Most Wanted. “I was on Law & Order when they closed out the 20-year run of the original show,” Sisto said about how he became involved with the show. “Dick called me and had me come by to have me meet him and Craig [Turk], who is the other creator of the show, along with a couple of other producers that I’ve known. We just talked about [FBI] and it was towards the end of pilot season and it seemed cool. Dick is a good person to be in business with and it’s always a nice feeling when someone you’ve worked with calls you back because that means they liked working with you. I liked the idea of the role. It wasn’t the usual thing on these shows. It was the one thing that was a little different. They don’t have a guy like this on the cop shows where you’re the head of this big room trying to sort people and

organize information. It seemed like a challenge and a fun role to play. It had a lot of possibility for success.” Valentine is the nerve center of the FBI’s Joint Operations Command (JOC) room, whose ability to easily relate and engage with superiors and subordinates makes him a master motivator. “He’s a good guy,” Sisto said about his character. “He’s definitely obsessed with his job, but he’s also obsessed with his kids. His marriage did not work out probably because of the difficulties of the job. Not only is it a difficult job for the people who do it, but also it takes a toll on the family. He’s still devoted to his family, which tells a lot about him. He’s also usually good at dispelling conflict and intense adversity. If he’s in the room with somebody who’s kind of a jerk having some heated thing, he’s pretty good at deflating that. He’s self-deprecating at times, but he also likes to hear himself talk and he’s definitely not shy about being the center of attention and being the guy that people come to. He reminds me of a really good first AD on a film set. The first AD is like the one who runs the whole thing and keeps it moving. He’s always shouting because there are a lot of people in the room who

guy just because my brain doesn’t really work like that,” Sisto explained. “I kind of have trouble remembering names and stuff, so sometimes I have trouble following the plot for procedural stuff honestly. I prefer watching a character just alone in his room thinking for an hour than following a bunch of plots. That’s just how my brain works as a viewer. A Day In The Life Of An ER Nurse Inside NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine BY CYNDI ZAWESKI

reathe. Emergency nurse Lila V. Hageman-Sheehan reminds herself to do this as she steps inside the doors of Massapequa General. It’s 1988 and Hageman-Sheehan, having recently earned her RN in a specialized nursing program through her high school, is walking into her shift at 7 p.m. The overnight shift is unpredictable, as are all shifts at the bustling ER, but the twilight hours are welcomed by Hageman-Sheehan. A young mother of four, her children hardly notice her absence. Her three-nights on, four-nights off schedule ensures HagemanSheehan’s is there for little league games and PTA, she even served as the school nurse for a time. Back on the floor, it is gearing up to be a busy night, HagemanSheehan learns from the nurse who she’s replacing for the night. The beds are full, and it wouldn’t be unusual for her to have 18 patients within the 12 hours on the clock. Hageman-Sheehan gets the run down from the outgoing nurse before making the rounds, introducing herself to her patients for the evening. The visits begin with a smile and a quick hello, but they’re more than beats eye. “They are mini-assessments,” she explained. “You’re introducing yourself, but you’re also prioritizing which patients need immediate attention. You’re noticing things like how they’re breathing and the way they’re acting. The entire shift is an ongoing assessment.” The outgoing nurse shares one last nuisance before heading home, the elderly woman in room No. 8 will not leave her ailing husband’s side while he’s hooked to machines as doctors rush to find a diagnosis. Hageman-Sheehan has a number of certifications next to her name: Lila V. Hageman-Sheehan BSN, RN,CEN,NYSAFE. She is currently earning her master’s degree in nursing administration and holds the job title of nurse manager of the emergency department at NYU Winthrop Hospital in Mineola. Though she is no longer a bedside nurse, Hageman-Sheehan role centers on patient care at one of the most fast paced hospitals in the region. NYU Winthrop Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine treats more than 81,000 patients each year (roughly 300 every day). It is considered one of the busiest on Long Island for people with acute illnesses and victims of accidents and violence. Because a visit to the ER can be a stressful experience and despite a high volume, Hageman-Sheehan and her staff of 353 are continually making efforts to deliver compassionate care to patients when they need it most. The administrative work includes mentorship of the young ER nurses. A natural teacher, it’s a beloved part of the job. Though Hageman-Sheehan’s schedule is more traditional now, she is known to work from 6 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. from time-to-time to help transport patients or sort through resumes to make a new hire. “It is hard to walk away,” she said. “You have bad nights. You have sad nights. We see happiness, too. I always tell the staff that they are touching people’s lives and that is rewarding.” The staff encounters a wide spec trum of patients and symptoms. As a Level 1 Trauma Center, they are trained to handle the most critical emergencies. In fact, it’s Nassau County’s only trauma center with

Hope For Treating COVID-19

OVID-19 has affected our way of life and everyone has the same high-level questions, how long will this continue and why aren’t there medications to treat this virus? As a health care provider and researcher, I cannot answer the first question other than to say that the longer we cheat and do not practice true social distancing, the longer this virus will be around. I would like to spend some time on the second question. COVID-19 was first identified in December 2019. We are in April. It takes time to develop, test and implement new treatments. It is for this reason that we are seeing the utilization and testing of previously available medications. These drugs are being used and tested because they make sense that they could be effective. This is the hope. We, the medical community, and only the medical community, need to ensure that we offer hope, not false hope or false promises. To start the discussion, there is no standard of care or medical consensus on the treatment of COVID-19 other than to treat the symptoms of fever and cough with drinking plenty of fluids, rest, acetaminophen and cough syrups.

There is a feeling that the use of hydroxychloroquine, an outdated anti-malarial drug now used to treat rheumatoid arthritis may be effective and this “sense” has led to its widespread use. But what is the data supporting its use? A single, non-randomized study of 36 patients in France suggested that hydroxychloroquine lowered coronavirus levels in the blood as compared to untreated controls. Just the other day, another small but randomized study out of China reported that hydroxychloroquine showed no benefit in treating COVID-19 infection. With limited data, and one large clinical study just starting in the US to determine if this drug will be safe and effective, the FDA approved its use for COVID-19 infection. I hope they are right in this decision and not offering false hope.

We need more data. Similarly, there are scattered reports on the use of the combination of hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin, tocilizumab (an IL-6 receptor antibody), vitamin C and even famotidine to treat COVID-19 infection. Once again, there is no evidence-based data to support the use of these products and the concept that they may be effective is speculative at best at this point. We need more data. It appears that there are two phases of COVID-19 infection, an early phase and a later phase characterized by a surge in pro-inflammatory cytokines, a part of our immune system, which leads to severe lung inflammation and poor outcomes in a small minority of COVID infected patients. Research to develop treatments for COVID-19 is therefore based on intervening both early and late. The good news is that there are well conceived, randomized, double-blind, placebo control trials currently underway which are rapidly enrolling patients with COVID-19 infection. The medications being tested fall into two broad categories, drugs that are directly anti-viral and drugs that suppress this cytokine storm overreaction to COVID-19. The direct anti-viral

The immune modulator, sarilumab, is an IL-6 receptor inhibitor that theoretically decreases the inflammatory response in the lungs which is triggered by the virus. There is tremendous hope that these therapies will be effective but since they randomized, placebo-controlled trials, we will not know if they are effective for several months. While they are being given with the intention of helping, only time will tell if they are effective, ineffective and most importantly, safe. Medical science is feverishly working to develop and test treatments for COVID-19, but these treatments need to be assessed through well-designed clinical trials that will provide answers as to their effectiveness and safety. We must rely on evidence-based medicine to give us these answers, not speculation or emotions or non-scientifically backed statements which may provide false hope and potentially do more harm than good. We will get through this together, but we need to remain vigilant in our social distancing, wash our hands frequently and use common sense to flatten to curve and contain the virus. NYU Langone Expands Telemedicine Doctors available for virtual visits during COVID-19 outbreak BY CYNDI ZAWESKI

ur normal way of life has come to a crawl. Officials have called on more than 250 million Americans to stay at home to curtail the spread of COVID-19. But staying at home doesn’t necessarily mean that people should skip routine doctors’ appointments. The concept of telemedicine—the practice of caring for patients remotely through phone conversations or real time streaming video applications, most commonly FaceTime—has been emerging in the healthcare industry. Dr. Collin Brathwaite, who specializes in general and bariatric surgery at NYU Langone Health, first became interested in the idea three years ago after learning about telemedicine at a healthcare industry conference. The service allows patients to connect with doctors from home, and also gives doctors the option to administer care from home or from the office.

“It allows doctors to have access from anywhere, especially at this point in time with limited travel and people being told to stay home,” Brathwaite said. “We have also developed different schedules for staff as far as when they come into the hospital so that everyone is not there every day. This means doctors can see patients in the office or through virtual visits.” NYU Langone Health, like many healthcare systems in the state and around the country, have been slowly laying the groundwork to make telemedicine a reality. One reason NYU Langone has been able to swiftly implement these changes to expand telemedicine is because the hospital system has been growing digital health care, spending tens of millions of dollars on its telemedicine platform prior to the outbreak. In light of COVID-19, NYU Langone Health accelerated its capabilities to become one of the largest integrated providers on the east coast to offer

video visits to patients. NYU Langone Health has seen an increase in patient visits to their telemedicine platforms over the last few weeks, and the volume of patient appointments via video visit is only predicted to increase in the coming weeks, as self-isolation continues. To meet the need, NYU Langone added 1,300 doctors and care providers to its telemedicine platform. Prior to the COVID-19 outbreak, NYU Langone conducted approximately telemedicine calls per day. Now, that number is closer to 4,000 daily, Brathwaite explained. Virtual Urgent Care has played a key role in the midst of this pandemic, allowing patients who have flu-like symptoms and other medical concerns to be seen remotely, including patients who have used the service to help identify symptoms of COVID-19. Virtual Urgent Care now takes more than 200 different types of insurance, including Medicare. The service is being employed by all

departments, including bariatrics. “Bariatric surgeries require pre-op work ups,” Brathwaite said. “We’re able to continue to meet with patients telemedicially to prepare them for their surgeries.” Brathwaite said the use of telemedicine will continue even after the pandemic has subsided. “Patients come to see me from all over, from the East End to the other side of Brooklyn,” Brathwaite said. “It hurts me when I have a patient from Upstate New York driving an hour and a half to visit me for a half hour appointment. Then, they have to make the trek back. With telemedicine, they don’t need to be on the highway stuck in traffic.” Virtual Urgent Care is now a service offered 24/7. To the Nurses Who Won’t Read This I’m guessing that most nurses aren’t going to see this article—at least not right away. Who has time to read when you’re working with patients at hospitals and other healthcare facilities? But if you know a nurse, you’re encouraged to pass on these words of gratitude and encouragement. Because they are doing heroic work. I should know. A month before the coronavirus was a thing, I spent a month in the hospital, being treated for pneumonia. I was constantly amazed at the hard work, care, thoughtfulness and healing that the nurses, nurse’s aides and hospital technicians offered round the clock. Some had 12-hour shifts during which there was no time to sit, hardly a chance to eat or take care of personal needs. I was exhausted just watching them in action. And not all patients were as delightful as I was. There were some challenging patients

who suffered from dementia or physical pain. Others were overly demanding. And if the patients were not demanding, the job is. On top of the physical and emotional care nurses offer those who are ill, they are now required to be tethered to a mobile computer unit and they need to log every procedure and intervention. While accurate charting is essential in today’s day and age, data entry is yet another expectation put upon the

nursing staff. And now comes the coronavirus. Infectious diseases are always a concern for those dealing with patients, but the new virus creates a different set of concerns and fears. Combine that with a growing shortage of masks and other protective equipment and the anxiety level goes up even more. Many nurses have family members that concern them deeply. Whether it’s their children or their parents or their spouses, there are worries that the virus could be unknowingly spread from the hospital to the home. Or even vice versa. And after working a lengthy shift, there’s so little energy left to bring to the home front. There are new practical considerations that face nurses, doctors, and others who are at work throughout the day. Grocery stores now have limited hours so that they might not be open before

Following the antics of a sanguine parks department director and her colleagues, this series, which ran from 2009-15 for seven seasons, will amuse, uplift and take up a decent amount of your time. Its cast is also packed with talent, featuring Amy Poehler, Rashida Jones, Nick Offerman, Chris Pratt and Rob Lowe.

Grey’s Anatomy Healthcare professionals deserve more appreciation than ever right now, and perhaps no show serves as a better reminder of that than the long-running medical drama Grey’s Anatomy. With 15 seasons available on Netflix and no shortage of captivating storylines, the show is perfect for binge-watching. Its 16th season is currently airing on ABC, with an early season finale set to air on April 9. Its large ensemble cast includes Ellen Pompeo, Sandra Oh, Katherine Heigl and Patrick Dempsey.

ith the COVID-19 threat being an omnipresent one, the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) are issuing letters to a number of sellers of unapproved and misbranded products, claiming they can treat or prevent the Coronavirus. The companies’ products include teas, essential oils and colloidal silver. The FTC says the companies have no evidence to back up their claims—as required by law. The FDA says there are no approved vaccines, drugs or investigational products currently available to treat or prevent the virus. Closer to home, county officials report on new scammers pretending to be with the Nassau County Department of Health. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran and Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder are urging residents to be vigilant when receiving telephone solicitations or emails from persons which could be scams or rumors regarding COVID-19. Resident have been alerting county officials about

incoming phone calls from scammers pretending to be with the Nassau County Department of Health. These callers ask for personal information including social security numbers. The department of health never asks for this type of information and residents are advised to wary when receiving phone calls, texts or any other type of solicitations. “While we all remain home to protect our health, we must stay vigilant to also protect our finances and private information,” Curran said. “Nassau County has zero-tolerance for scammers preying on anxious residents and vulnerable populations isolated at home during this time of crisis. Know the facts: no one legitimate will call and ask for your banking information or social security number.” The following tips should be followed to avoid falling victim to scams: • Hang up on robocalls. Don’t press any numbers. The recording might say that pressing a number will let you speak to a live operator or remove you from their call list, but it might lead to more robocalls, instead

• Ignore online offers for vacci nations and home test kits. There currently are no vaccines, pills, potions, lotions, lozenges or other prescription or over-the-counter products available to treat or COVID-19. Visit the FDA website to learn more. • Fact-check information. Scammers, and sometimes well-meaning people, share information that hasn’t been verified. Before you pass on any messages, contact trusted sources. Visit www.usa.gov/coronavirus for links to federal, state and local government agencies. • Know who you’re buying from. Online sellers may claim to have in-demand products, like cleaning, household, and health and medical supplies when, in fact, they don’t. • Don’t respond to texts and emails about checks from the government. Details are still being worked out and anyone who tells you they can get you the money now is a scammer. • Don’t click on links from sources

The Nassau County Department of Consumer Affairs has received more than 350 complaints of price gouging from local businesses and issued more than 70 violations since county executive Laura Curran first encouraged residents to report coronavirus-related price gouging incidents early last month. With access to sanitary equipment and medical supplies at a premium as coronavirus cases continue to climb, a number of online and physical vendors have been accused of jacking up prices to profit from the pandemic. The county is cooperating with state and federal officials to try and combat the practice. While the names of businesses accused of price gouging are not being revealed since they are innocent until proven guilty, Curran mentioned one Garden City business received a violation for selling masks at $20 a piece and one business in Plainview was hit for uncertified N95 respirators that should have been pulled from shelves in 2011. the end of January, it triggered New York State laws prohibiting price gouging in affected areas, which is the whole state. The actual law on the books in the state leaves the definition of price gouging open to interpretation by the courts. NY General Business Law § 396-r prohibits the selling of goods and services “for an amount which represents an unconscionably excessive price” during significant market disruptions like the one being caused by coronavirus. What exactly constitutes an “unconscionably

excessive price,” however, is somewhat open to debate. “Effectively the standard is you know price gouging when you see it,” Nassau County Department of Consumer Affairs Commissioner George May said. “If somebody reports these masks were $10 yesterday and now they’re $11 today, it’s unlikely someone’s going to get a violation from my office for that. If they were $10 yesterday and $150 today, that’s a different story.”

Once the department receives a price gouging complaint, its employees investigate the accused and issue a civil violation that can be contested on several grounds, such as the hike in price being a necessary response to the increased cost of doing business. Vendors issued violations will have the chance to defend themselves in court, although the halt in civil trials due to coronavirus will delay the process more than usual. The department’s authority to cite vendors extends to online retailers selling to Nassau residents as well. May said the county may work to get repeat offenders delisted from sites like Amazon and eBay. County’s Public Libraries Offer Digital Library Card BY ANTHONY MURRAY

The Nassau Library System recently announced that 50 local libraries are now offering a digital library card. This new tool will allow residents of Nassau who do not already have a card to utilize the digital resources of their library while facilities are closed due to the coronavirus. Since libraries across the county are currently closed, a digital library card will enable people to explore the full complement of online library services from their homes. In order to get the digital library services, download the Libby app, which allows people to borrow ebooks and audiobooks. Some libraries also provide access to streaming entertainment apps that can be installed on smart TVs. Other resources that are offered include Tutor.com, which connects users to live homework help, interactive language learning from Pronunciator and current-issue popular magazines from RB Digital. One of the libraries that is

participating is the Mineola Memorial Library. “For Mineola, this would be for residents who don’t have a current library card,” library director Charles Sleefe said. “It will grant them access to our online and digital holdings. Residents who already have a library card already have access to these collections and do not have to apply for this.” The library’s digital collections can be found at www. mineolalibrary.info. “It is a simple application to fill out,” Sleefe said. “The link is on our website. At the bottom drop down menu, they would choose Mineola and will receive their digital card by email.” Residents who do not currently have a library card should visit www.nassaulibrary.org/digital-card-application. “I was able to achieve great success in fencing, not because I trained harder than others, but because of my mindset and passion,” Hooshi said. “Oftentimes, many fencers aren’t aware of this, and question their results despite them continuously working hard. I always like to say that

fencing is physical chess, using swords. It requires a lot of thinking and strategizing. It’s mind over matter.” Hooshi has used that mentality to improve her craft in a short amount of time, with determination bringing her the success she desires. “I had to overcome self-doubt, fear and lack of confidence,” Hooshi said. “Most fencers begin training and regular lessons from a young age and some as young as 7 years old. I was almost 14 when I first started, which drew a lot of doubt and talk among established athletes who had never seen my name before in previous regional and national events. “Fencing developed my personality. I had to overcome thinking about what others thought of me and just accept myself for who I am. Once I learned to tackle my fear, my confidence was automatically unleashed and there came a whole new side to my fencing and potential.” Hooshi realizes that her biggest growth as an athlete

has come from her toughest battles, as her ability to overcome adversity has proven to bring out the best in her. “I mentally review my flaws from previous tournaments,” Hooshi said. “I remind myself of the actions I need to take and the ones to avoid. I’ve come to realize that you learn more from losing than winning.” While winning is not what Hooshi sees as the best way to learn, she certainly recognizes areas of her fencing style that could help her reach new heights. “I want to improve my agility, ability to accept criticism and openness in valuing and following others’ advice,” Hooshi said. A 16-year-old athlete rarely has built such a strong résumé at this point in her life and Hooshi’s early success could be only the beginning for her. What did you think of this article? It was a big driving force, having him and knowing that he cared so much about me. He was always in my corner. He definitely pushed me harder. He was definitely tough on me, but all of that toughness was because he loves me and he wanted me to do the best I possibly could. You finished fifth in the county this year. What does it mean to end your high school career on a strong note? I’m definitely proud of my efforts. I wrestled as hard as I could, and with my leg the way it was, there wasn’t much left that I could do. In neutral, I wasn’t even able to shoot. I was giving up the first takedown in every match, and I just had to battle back.

What is your biggest Q strength when it comes to wrestling? I have a lot of determinaA tion. I have a lot of heart. I get that from my mom. My mom is a battler, so I get that from her. I know I’ll be able to grit it no matter what situation I’m in. If I can’t grit it out, I’m going to try as hard as I possibly can. What’s your go-to move on the mat? Me personally, I favor the position of top because

I’ve been better there. It’s my best position since I started wrestling when I was younger. That’s where I scored most of my points in the county tournament. How have you grown as a wrestler throughout your five years at MacArthur? I matured a lot and I’ve learned a lot of life lessons. I’ve learned that hard work and determination can get you very far in life.
