Local School Budgets Get Approved

udget season has now come and gone and to no surprise most of the proposed school budgets were passed by village residents who came out to the polls and voted last week.

The Sewanhaka Central High School District (SCHSD) had their budget passed with 2,569 voters voting yes, while 1,217 voters voted no. The proposed tax levy increase was 2.69 percent. The SCHSD, which has five high schools in its district, projected $738,565 to have capital projects done in each of the five schools.

In order to balance the 2019-20 budget, the district had to have necessary reductions including the elimination of the purchasing of a new drivers’ education vehicle, reducing paper orders in each high school and the reduction in salary and benefits due to retirement incentives among others. The district saved a total of $837,544.

Meanwhile, the Floral Park-Bellerose School District’s (FPBSD) budget passed with a 512 to 308 vote. For the FPBSD board of education, Douglas Vigo and Michael Culotta, who were both running,

The Herricks School District budget was also passed with 1,048 residents voting yes, while 420 voted no. On the school’s budget, two propositions

were passed. Proposition 2, which was for the establishment of a Capital Reserve Fund, passed with 1,058 votes. Proposition 3, which was for a Capital Reserve expenditure was approved with a 1,105 vote. A little more than 300 residents voted no on both propositions.

Board of education incumbent trustee Juleigh Chin was also reelected with 1,149 votes.

“Our board and administration worked diligently to develop a budget that continues to support all programs and opportunities for students while carrying only a minimal increase and remaining within the allowable tax levy cap,” said the district in a statement. “We appreciate the efforts of and thank everyone in the community who participated in the budget development process and all those who express a continued interest in our schools.”

The New Hyde Park-Garden City Park had a proposed budget of $40,184,675 and passed with 698 residents voting yes. For the board of education, Jennifer Kerrane ran unopposed and received 801 votes. Patricia Rudd received 825 votes defeating Saadia Malik, who gained 230 votes, while Kathryn Canese defeated Sangeeta Nischal with a 822-208 vote, respectively.

Composer Joe Iconis Makes Broadway History

When Be More Chill opened on Broadway in March, it was a dream come true for Joe Iconis.

The Garden City native wrote the music and lyrics for the musical comedy adapted from the young adult novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini. The story of how this musical made it to the Broadway stage—the Lyceum Theatre stage, no less—is unlike any other, thanks to the fans who identified with the material so much, they wouldn’t let it fade into obscurity.

“We...talk about anxiety and depression and these things that plague our society, but we...do it through this unexpected sci-fi comedy lens,” he said, and he has gotten nothing but positive feedback from fans who see parts of themselves in the characters. “I’ve been lucky enough to meet [many] Be More Chill fans in person…So many young people come up to me and say ‘Thank you for making something that feels celebratory, while still dealing with all of these issues that I go through.’”

That’s what makes Be More Chill stand out from the crowd. Though

it’s about an ingestible super-computer that teaches its teenage host to ‘be more chill,’ there’s a lot going on, and depth that might be easy to miss at first glance.

Following the run at Two River Theater in New Jersey in 2015, Be More Chill was effectively dead, living on only through the cast recording and tales of those fortunate enough to have seen the original production. A YouTube video of “Michael in the Bathroom,” the catchy and emotional anthem of the show, posted in 2017 went viral and essentially created the demand that this show return to the stage—which it did OffBroadway in 2018.

Iconis has been rewarded for his efforts with a Tony Award nomination for best original score, as well as Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations.

and lyricist refers to his musical as a celebration of suburban weirdness.

“We wanted it to play out in malls and in bathrooms and in house parties and backstage at high school auditoriums, which is my youth,” Iconis said. “I was definitely thinking about Roosevelt Field when I was writing the mall stuff.”

Musical theater has been a part of Iconis’ life since childhood. Though his family was not in the industry, they fostered his love of theater. He also credits the music education offered by the Garden City school district with shaping his future.

“I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have that access to music as a kid,” he said.

In junior high, Iconis participated in the musicals by playing piano in the pit.

He later learned to “properly exploit his love of the-

ater” by becoming the musical director for the Garden City Community Theatre and running the Hofstra Musical Theater Summer Camp.

Since then, he’s written quite a few cabaret shows and musicals, including The Black Suits, about a Long Island high school garage band, and several more on the horizon.

Broadway Bounty Hunter will open this July at the Greenwich House Off-Broadway. The musical written for Annie Golden tells the story of a theater actress of a certain age who is down on her luck and feeling the effects of a sexist, ageist society.

“Through a series of events, she gets wrapped up in the world of bounty hunting [and begins] an adventure to South America to capture a drug lord,” Iconis explained.

“It’s told in the style of exploitation films of the ’70s so it has this really cool R&B, funk score.”

ecently, Hempstead Town Receiver of Taxes Don Clavin announced a shared services agreement between the Town of Hempstead Receiver of Taxes office and the Village of Bellerose—a first step toward discovering similar money-saving initiatives with other municipalities for the benefit of taxpayers in the future.

The agreement, approved at the most recent Hempstead Town Board meeting, authorizes Clavin and the receiver’s office to assist with the production of the village’s tax bills.

Though the Hempstead Town tax office sends out more than 256,000 bills and receipts quarterly, the timing works out well for the two municipalities. Bellerose village’s tax bills are produced and mailed during a brief period in which the Hempstead Town tax office’s machines are not at full capacity. What’s more, the Hempstead Town tax office is staffed with cross-trained employees ready to assist with the village’s tax bills.

“I’m proud to announce our first ‘shared services agreement’ with Bellerose village,” Clavin said. “I’m happy that we could find common ground on how to assist them in their tax collection operations. We’re excited to get started and we hope this is a launching ground for future shared service initiatives with other

municipalities.”

The Village of Bellerose, a quaint community with a population of just under 1,200 in western Nassau, has a handful of hard-working staff members dedicated to all village operations, in addition to tax billing and collections. By freeing the village’s employees of tax bill production duties, they are available up to perform other vital day-to-day operations. The village’s board of trustees has committed to the shared services agreement, and intends to officially ratify it at its next meeting. In the meantime, Clavin’s staff will be working with the Bellerose village clerk to commence production and inserting tax bills into envelopes this week.

“This shared services agreement is a pivotal moment in the long history of the Town of Hempstead,” Clavin said. “I thank Bellerose village for working together to demonstrate how local government truly can collaborate with the goal of benefiting our taxpayers. I look forward to working with the Village of Bellerose on this groundbreaking consolidation initiative and to consider other opportunities in the future with this municipality and with others across America’s largest township.”
