“Currently there are only two tenants, the furniture store no one is there right now, so there are 30 spots, but there is also parking on Jericho [Turnpike] and the side streets. None of those are in front of any residential houses.” The studio will have three different rooms: one room will have three clients and the other two rooms will have 10 clients in each. Each class is an hour long and will have three classes from 5 to 10 p.m. “I certainly wish you luck because we sit here often and this is different than what I’ve seen before,” said trustee Dennis Walsh. “People sometimes invest a lot of their money and don’t make it.” When it came time for public comment, Mineola resident Linda Benedetto, who lives on Horton Highway, said that her main concern is the continuous traffic and parking.

Composer Joe Iconis Makes Broadway History BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA kdijkstra@antonmediagroup.com
When Be More Chill opened on Broadway in March, it was a dream come true for Joe Iconis. The Garden City native wrote the music and lyrics for the musical comedy adapted from the young adult novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini. The story of how this musical made it to the Broadway stage—the Lyceum Theatre stage, no less—is unlike any other, thanks to the fans who identified with the material so much, they wouldn’t let it fade into obscurity. “We...talk about anxiety and depression and these things that plague our society, but we...do it through this unexpected sci-fi comedy lens,” he said, and he has gotten nothing but positive feedback from fans who see parts of themselves in the characters. “I’ve been lucky enough to meet [many] Be More Chill fans in person…So many young people come up to me and say ‘Thank you for making something that feels celebratory, while still dealing with all of these issues that I go through.’” That’s what makes Be More Chill stand out from the crowd. Though
it’s about an ingestible super-computer that teaches its teenage host to ‘be more chill,’ there’s a lot going on, and depth that might be easy to miss at first glance. Following the run at Two River Theater in New Jersey in 2015, Be More Chill was effectively dead, living on only through the cast recording and tales of those fortunate enough to have seen the original production. A YouTube video of “Michael in the Bathroom,” the catchy and emotional anthem of the show, posted in 2017 went viral and essentially created the demand that this show return to the stage—which it did OffBroadway in 2018. Iconis has been rewarded for his efforts with a Tony Award nomination for best original score, as well as Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations. The composer

and lyricist refers to his musical as a celebration of suburban weirdness. “We wanted it to play out in malls and in bathrooms and in house parties and backstage at high school auditoriums, which is my youth,” Iconis said. “I was definitely thinking about Roosevelt Field when I was writing the mall stuff.” Musical theater has been a part of Iconis’ life since childhood. Though his family was not in the industry, they fostered his love of theater. He also credits the music education offered by the Garden City school district with shaping his future. “I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have that access to music as a kid,” he said. In junior high, Iconis participated in the musicals by playing piano in the pit. He later learned to “properly exploit his love of the-
ater” by becoming the musical director for the Garden City Community Theatre and running the Hofstra Musical Theater Summer Camp. Since then, he’s written quite a few cabaret shows and musicals, including The Black Suits, about a Long Island high school garage band, and several more on the horizon. Broadway Bounty Hunter will open this July at the Greenwich House Off-Broadway. The musical written for Annie Golden tells the story of a theater actress of a certain age who is down on her luck and feeling the effects of a sexist, ageist society. “Through a series of events, she gets wrapped up in the world of bounty hunting [and begins] an adventure to South America to capture a drug lord,” Iconis explained. “It’s told in the style of exploitation films of the ’70s so it has this really cool R&B, funk score.” Stay tuned for Love in Hate Nation and The Unauthorized Hunter S. LETTER TO THE EDITOR SCHUMER SUPPORTS CCPA Dear Fellow Legislator: I write to express my support for the passage of the Climate and Community Protection Act (CCPA) (S.2992/A.3876), introduced in the New York State Assembly by Assembly Member Steve Englebright and in the Senate by Senator Todd Kaminsky. I applaud them, the broad coalition of environmental, labor, community and economic justice groups supporting the bill, and the bills’ 68 Assembly and 35 Senate sponsors for their leadership and commitment to passing this bold climate change policy for the state—one that will help vulnerable communities and create a tremendous number of new, family-sustaining jobs for fellow New Yorkers. We live in unprecedented times. We are witnessing human-caused climate change— in the form of increased severe storms, floods, droughts, wildfires and other extreme weather events—causing loss of life and damage to people’s livelihoods all over the country and world. The global scientific consensus has called on governments, industry and civil society to take action now to keep temperatures from rising above levels that would lead to long-term catastrophic climate change impacts. After Superstorm Sandy, I visited community after devastated community—Staten Island, Red Hook, Long Beach, Downtown Manhattan, East Harlem, Gerritsen Beach and more. I also visited many Upstate communities decimated by Hurricanes Irene and Lee, as well as the Lake Ontario communities and the City of Binghamton after catastrophic flooding. All these places were vulnerable, and all need our help to ward off future disasters—and better yet, to be more forward acting in addressing the harmful impacts of climate change. I believe we must prioritize the urgency of climate change and the need to take bold steps to aggressively confront it, and that is exactly what the CCPA does, and it is what I am fighting for in the U.S.

Mineola Troop 45 Strives To Do Their Best BY STEPHEN BORGIA

M
ineola’s Troop 45 was established on June 9, 1921. In two years, Troop 45 will be celebrating its 100th anniversary and has been led by Scout Master Steve Grosskopf for the past 21 years. The boys in the troop are from Mineola and other surrounding communities, and are currently around 75 Scouts strong who are very active in the community. Troop 45 takes part in food drives through the Scouting for Food program and donates the food to local food pantries. As Scouts near the rank of Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank, members of the troop are required to perform a project, that mostly benefit the local communities and organizations. Troop 45 has had a very strong history of leadership development with more than 170 Eagles Scouts also. Under Scout Master Grosskopf’s leadership, Troop 45 has won the Klondike Derby ever since he became Scout Master. Klondike Derby is a competition between troops, which tests scouts’ knowledge in
Troop 45 recently visited the U.S. Capitol. various scout skills and their ability to work as a patrol. Troop 45 also goes on High Adventure trips to places such as Alaska, Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, Sea Base in Florida, and Northern Tier Scout High Adventure in Minnesota/ Canada. High Adventure trips are extended trips, lasting anywhere
between 12 to 14 days. Scouts can scale glaciers in Alaska, hike up to 120 miles on trails leading to elevations of 12,441 feet in New Mexico, go sailing from Florida to the Bahamas or go canoeing in the many lakes and rivers of Minnesota and Canada. Troop 45 is very active, with troop
meetings every Tuesday night at the First Presbyterian Church on First Street in Mineola and camping trips almost every month. Anyone who is interested in joining can stop by on a Tuesday night between 7:30 and 9 p.m. —Stephen Borgia is a Boy Scout with Troop 45 in Mineola

Mineola Student Becomes NROTC Scholarship Recipient

Mineola High School senior Nicolas Tavares
ollowing in his father’s footsteps, Mineola High School senior Nicolas Tavares had enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in June 2018, one year in advance of his graduation date. After scoring in the 90th percentile on his entrance exam, Tavares’ recruiter urged him to apply for the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps Scholarship, which would provide him with all of the Marine Corps training, in addition to the opportunity to earn both his bachelor’s degree and an officer ranking while having his full tuition paid for through the scholarship. Tavares was notified in March that he is one of five in the Nassau/Suffolk/New York City region who have qualified for the national scholarship. Tavares, whose father was a Marine in the 1980s after moving to the United States from Portugal, had been raised patriotic and always wanted to do more for his country. He has wanted to be a Marine since the fourth grade and has been preparing

St. Aidan’s Middle School Baseball Trains With Steve MacQuail BY MINEOLA AMERICAN STAFF mineola@antonmediagroup.com
On Wednesday, May 15, the St. Aidan’s Stallions welcomed former Major League Baseball (MLB) player and professional hitting instructor Steve MacQuail to their practice field for a two-hour batting practice session. MacQuail was a baseball standout in both high school and college and was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays. He played in the Blue Jays and Arizona Diamondbacks organizations and finished his professional baseball career on Long Island with the Long Island Ducks. MacQuail then went on to coaching and is a very respected and in-demand hitting instructor. MacQuail first gave the entire team an overview on hitting. He reviewed stance, the stages of hitting and finish. He then worked individually with every boy, working on and improving their swing and overall approach to hitting. The session ended with a team review of the hitting concepts they had just worked on. Coaches Kenny and Patrick Solosky, who were both students of MacQuail, were happy with the batting session. They had several players’ remark on how much they learned and how
Steve MacQuail gives The Stallions some pointers on hitting. helpful they found the advice given by MacQuail. “We both trained with Steve and he knows hitting,” said Patrick. “It was nice that each and every player could benefit from his training.”
The St. Aidan’s Stallions finished their 2019 regular season at .500 with a 3-3 record and are ready for upcoming playoffs. —The St. Aidan’s Middle School baseball team known as “The
Stallions” plays in the Catholic Spirit League. The league is school based and only utilizes wood bats in order to prepare the players for the Catholic High School League.
