Farmingdale Valedictorian on the cover And Salutatorian Announced

A

s the school year nears its conclusion, Farmingdale High School announced this year’s valedictorian, Kunj Patel, who earned a GPA of 105.069, and salutatorian, Jessica Finkel, who earned a GPA of 104.444.

The Farmingdale Observer sat down with the two students and learned what it means to be Farmingdale High School’s brightest.

I think keeping that same motivation and drive from ninth to 11th grade paved the way to where I am now.

What kind of honor is this for you?

J: It’s crazy. I honestly don’t think I fully grasp it yet. It’s still crazy to me that I got this, so it’s very important. I am very honored.

K: My parents immigrated.

So not being native to the language here or the culture here and adapting was very hard. I was in ESL, so I had trouble speaking English. This valedictorian title means a lot to me. It means a lot in the fact that I’m making [my parents] proud and making sure that I did whatever I could to make sure that I fulfill that one portion of their ideals of their kids being successful in life.

What are you involved in?

J: I’ve been on varsity volleyball and softball since 10th grade. I’ve been in wind ensemble all four years, I play the French horn and I’m the principle player. I made AllState in my junior year. I joined DECA this year. I’m in National Honor Society, ASL Honor Society, Tri-M Honor Society and Business Honor Society.

I’m also in Key Club.

K: In 10th grade, I was elected the president of the Spanish Honor Society and then junior year I was elected the secretary of Key Club. I was also inducted into National Honor Society, I was inducted into the Tri-M Honor Society, I was in marching band for the full four years and then I became a section leader at the end of 11th grade. I was in Science Olympiad since ninth grade and I was in Science Bowl.

I was also in Model United Nations and I was captain of varsity tennis.

Where will you be attending college and what will you major in?

J: I’m going to Penn State University and I’m majoring in engineering. I was very undecided until this year about my career, but I looked

I’m looking forward to my future. I feel like freshman year I had no idea about college or anything I wanted to do, so it’s just given me a different mindset on my goals and my future, and it’s given me my best friends and the best experiences.

K: High school has definitely brought in my aspect of how I think about other people.

Hearing from other people,

hearing their stories of what they want to do or their interests definitely inspires me. High school has definitely shaped who I am when it came to clubs and my work ethic.

I definitely made sure that I was on top of everything. It definitely made me the person who I am today. I’m very hard working because of high school. Everything that I will do from now on will date back to what I did now.

What is your best advice for freshmen?

J: Get involved as much as possible because that is really what’s going to shape your entire Farmingdale experience and your high school experience. You’re really not going to enjoy yourself if you don’t do things. You just have to try whatever you might think you might like. It could be the best thing you’ve ever done.

K: Start thinking about what you want to do, start building your college application now.

Definitely as a ninth grader, look into being active within the school. Just trying new things and making sure that you’re thinking about college.

What are you most looking forward to for future?

J: I’m really looking forward to going to Penn State. I’m very excited for that atmosphere and the academics there. And I really can’t wait to see how successful everyone is, like all my friends and just to see what great things we can do from our background.

K: The experiences.

Especially all I’ve heard from older people as far as college goes and making the most out of what I can, especially when it comes to research opportunities or going abroad or something like that.

Farmingdale Library Celebrates The PGA

Bethpage Local Is 2019 Woman Of Distinction

W

ith the 2019 PGA Championship having been held at Bethpage Black, the Farmingdale Library took much pride in supporting the local event that brought hundreds of thousands of eyes upon the area as viewers from around the world watched the championship. Recently, the library hosted 2019 PGA Championship poster artist Elaine Faith Thompson, who brought her golf-inspired artwork for the library community to see.

All of Thompson’s artwork is on display in the library’s quiet reading room.

The local artist also created the 2009 U.S. Open painting, when the event was held at Bethpage Black. For this year’s painting that she created, the Town of Oyster Bay Town Board presented Thompson with a citation recognizing the artist “for her incredible artwork that uniquely captures the anticipation and excitement of the PGA Championship.”

Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino (right) and Councilman Steve Labriola (left) joined with his colleagues on the town board in recognizing the recipients of the 2019 Women of Distinction Awards in the Town of Oyster Bay, including Ann Albertson of Bethpage.

Albertson, a longtime resident of Bethpage, is an original founder of the Central Park Historical Society, which documents Bethpage’s proud history. Several years ago, Albertson noticed that her beloved community was changing, so she joined fellow residents in preserving artifacts, pictures and personal memories in honor of Central Park, the original name for Bethpage.

Composer Joe Iconis Makes Broadway History

When Be More Chill opened on Broadway in March, it was a dream come true for Joe Iconis.

The Garden City native wrote the music and lyrics for the musical comedy adapted from the young adult novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini. The story of how this musical made it to the Broadway stage—the Lyceum Theatre stage, no less—is unlike any other, thanks to the fans who identified with the material so much, they wouldn’t let it fade into obscurity.

“We...talk about anxiety and depression and these things that plague our society, but we...do it through this unexpected sci-fi comedy lens,” he said, and he has gotten nothing but positive feedback from fans who see parts of themselves in the characters. “I’ve been lucky enough to meet [many] Be More Chill fans in person…So many young people come up to me and say ‘Thank you for making something that feels celebratory, while still dealing with all of these issues that I go through.’”

That’s what makes Be More Chill stand out from the crowd. Though

it’s about an ingestible super-computer that teaches its teenage host to ‘be more chill,’ there’s a lot going on, and depth that might be easy to miss at first glance.

Following the run at Two River Theater in New Jersey in 2015, Be More Chill was effectively dead, living on only through the cast recording and tales of those fortunate enough to have seen the original production. A YouTube video of “Michael in the Bathroom,” the catchy and emotional anthem of the show, posted in 2017 went viral and essentially created the demand that this show return to the stage—which it did OffBroadway in 2018.

Iconis has been rewarded for his efforts with a Tony Award nomination for best original score, as well as Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations.

and lyricist refers to his musical as a celebration of suburban weirdness.

“We wanted it to play out in malls and in bathrooms and in house parties and backstage at high school auditoriums, which is my youth,” Iconis said. “I was definitely thinking about Roosevelt Field when I was writing the mall stuff.”

Musical theater has been a part of Iconis’ life since childhood. Though his family was not in the industry, they fostered his love of theater. He also credits the music education offered by the Garden City school district with shaping his future.

“I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have that access to music as a kid,” he said.

In junior high, Iconis participated in the musicals by playing piano in the pit.

He later learned to “properly exploit his love of the-

ater” by becoming the musical director for the Garden City Community Theatre and running the Hofstra Musical Theater Summer Camp.

Since then, he’s written quite a few cabaret shows and musicals, including The Black Suits, about a Long Island high school garage band, and several more on the horizon.

Broadway Bounty Hunter will open this July at the Greenwich House Off-Broadway. The musical written for Annie Golden tells the story of a theater actress of a certain age who is down on her luck and feeling the effects of a sexist, ageist society.

“Through a series of events, she gets wrapped up in the world of bounty hunting [and begins] an adventure to South America to capture a drug lord,” Iconis explained.

“It’s told in the style of exploitation films of the ’70s so it has this really cool R&B, funk score.”

House Unanimously Passes Blue Water Navy Act House Passes Blue Water Navy Act: The House Last Tuesday, the House unanimously passed H.R. 299, The Blue Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019, by a vote of 410-0. Once signed into law, H.R. 299 will restore VA benefits to thousands of so-called Blue Water Navy Vietnam veterans who had their disability eligibility taken away after regulatory changes. Veterans exposed to Agent Orange while serving along the Korean DMZ will have an earlier start date to encompass the time frame when various defoliants were tested—from April 1, 1967, to Sept. 1, 1968. Benefits will expand to include children born with spinal bifida due to parent’s exposure in Thailand, as well as require VA to report on research being conducted on a broad range of conditions possibly related to service in Southwest Asia. The bill now moves to the Senate, which “failed to pass H.R. 299 in the previous Congress,” said Lawrence.

The VFW Calls for Increased Oversight of Service Members Protection: Last week, the VFW and other veterans organization called for increased oversight of the Military Lending Act (MLA). The MLA protects service members and their families from predatory lenders. The MLA is overseen by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the VFW is calling upon the CFPB to renew proactive investigations into potential violators of the MLA. COLUMN World Class Golfers Come To Farmingdale

F

armingdale and Bethpage were in the spotlight as world-class golfers, golf fans, spectators, the media and others came to Bethpage Black for the 101st PGA Championship.

This was the first time that the PGA tournament was held at Bethpage Black, an extremely difficult, worldclass, public golf course. Golf pros traveled from all over the globe to Long Island to compete in the championship and it was exciting to see so many golfers and golf enthusiasts around town during the week-long championship.

Thousands of fans and spectators enjoyed the thrill of watching the spectacular tournament, right here in Farmingdale Village, as well as on TV and live streamed.

Brooks Koepka won the 2019 PGA Championship with a -8 score of 272, with Dustin Johnson at a close second with a -6 score of

274. Jordan Spieth, Patrick Kantley and Matt Wallace all tied for third with a -2 score of 278. On behalf of myself and the Farmingdale Board of Trustees, congratulations to the winners and all of the competitors. Farmingdale was proud to be a part of such a monumental sporting event. We were thrilled to see so many people from the tournament sporting caps and PGA merchandise bags, walking along Main Street and throughout the village.

After winning his fourth major championship, Koepka came downtown to celebrate at the Dark Horse Tavern.

The timing was perfect as the Dark Horse just unveiled their expansion two days earlier.

Koepka celebrated in the brand new VIP Party Room with family and friends. We were delighted to see him at a Main Street hot spot.

Farmingdale Votes Yes On School Budget

Woman Of Distinction

Last week, the Farmingdale School District held its voting period, and Farmingdale residents overwhelmingly approved the Farmingdale School District’s 2019-20 budget. The $171,083,800 budget passed with 1,127 “yes” votes and 581 “no” votes. Also passed was Proposition II—the Farmingdale Youth Council Budget for fiscal year 2019-20.

“The passing of this budget will help us maintain appropriate class size, elective opportunities, athletic teams, music programs, extracurricular activities, support services and district-wide maintenance projects and equipment,” said Assistant to the Superintendent for Business Michael Motisi. “Farmingdale is a wonderful community and we’re so happy that our residents voted in favor of

providing the financial resources we need to give every child the education they need and deserve.”

Also part of the vote, residents re-elected Suzanne D’Amico and Michael Goldberg, who ran unopposed, to the Farmingdale Board of Education.

“We thank all the residents of our great community for showing up at the ballot box in this election—and in years past—to let us know how much they value what the school district brings to the town,” said Board of Education President Michael Goldberg.

“Suzanne D’Amico and I are thrilled to earn another term serving on the board of such a progressive, kind and upstanding school district.”

SPORTS Summer Pilates Coming To Bethpage R

esidents looking for a funfilled activity to keep fit and active are invited to register for one of the Town of Oyster Bay’s 10-week Pilates classes. The town’s Pilates classes are co-ed, offered to individuals 18 years of age or older and held at both the Ice Skating Center Community Room located at Bethpage Community Park and the Hicksville Athletic Center.

“Pilates is a mind-body intervention that focuses on strength, core stability, flexibility, muscle control, posture and breathing,” said Councilwoman Michele Johnson. “It is also a low-impact workout that is easy on your joints. If you haven’t tried this unique form of exercise, this town program may just be the perfect opportunity to

experience its many benefits.”

The two classes offered include: Tone & Sculpt, Mondays from 8 to 9 p.m. at the Hicksville Athletic Center, beginning Monday, July 8; and Pilates with Rings for Beginners and Intermediate, Wednesdays from 8 to 9 a.m. at the Ice Skating Center Community Room located at Bethpage Community Park, beginning on Wednesday, July 10.

Registration for the Pilates classes will take place at the Hicksville Athletic Center, located at 167 Broadway in Hicksville, on Sunday, June 2, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Monday, June 3, from 6 to 10 p.m.; and Thursday, June 5, from 6 to 9 p.m.

The fee for the program is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents.

Checks or money orders should be made payable to the Town of Oyster Bay. Proof of residency is required and availability is limited. Town residents will be given first preference. The classes are designed for beginners and intermediates. Participants are asked to bring their own half-inch to 1-inch-thick mats, as equipment will not be provided.

“Healthy fitness programs like Pilates are very popular among residents, because it gives them an

outlet to enjoy exercising and staying in shape, all while meeting new people,” added Johnson. “It is always recommended that participants check with a physician before participating in any physical fitness program.”
