Curran Announces New Veterans Hiring Initiative
O
n May 22, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran joined local veterans, Director of the Veterans Service Agency Ralph Esposito and County Assessor David Moog to announce a new veterans hiring initiative. Nassau County’s Department of Assessment and Assessment Review Commission worked with the county’s Civil Service Commission to modify the community service assistant requirements to allow the departments to give veterans preference in hiring, with priority given to disabled veterans. The agencies will be working in coordination with the county’s Veteran Services Agency, as well as state and federal veterans’ organizations. Both agencies look forward to hiring veterans to assist in communication and outreach for property owners. “We are proud that Nassau County is home to one of the largest veterans’ populations in the nation. We must never forget the sacrifices our veterans

brave men and women can thrive here in Nassau County. It’s our goal to ensure that every veteran, regardless of a disability, has a fair opportunity.” County Assessor David Moog said,
“As a son of a veteran, this hiring initiative is a meaningful measure of our gratitude to all veterans for the personal sacrifices they made to protect our freedoms. This is a win– win for our department. As we work to fill necessary positions, we are proud to have local veterans join as valued members of our team.” Last month, in collaboration with Legislator Joshua Lafazan, Curran signed into law a ban on housing discrimination against veterans in Nassau County. The county also established a commission on ending veteran’s homelessness to produce recommendations regarding transitional housing, vocational training, financial literacy, mental health services and other potential needs. In addition, Curran recently signed into law legislation that will give veterans employed by the county credit toward retirement health care benefits for up to three years in the military. — Submitted by the Nassau County Executive’s Office

OUT Boxing, the boxing fitness gym that opened on Lumber Road in Roslyn not even a year ago, has made its mark in a big way already, and much of it is owed to the support of such a loyal community. BOUT has been received with open arms by Roslyn residents and it is a testament to the close-knit community that Roslyn fosters amongst its townspeople. Individuals, families and students in Roslyn have shown that they want to support their local businesses and that they want them to succeed. Growing up, it was a rarity to ever find a place where the entire family could frequent to have a worthwhile and enjoyable workout. But BOUT has changed this notion; 3 to 5 year olds can come in the morning for a halfhour private group workout with their friends, teenagers can come to a youth class at 4:15 p.m. and then parents can come for the adult group classes in the early evening for a quick escape. There is something for everyone at
BOUT boxing offers classes for all age groups. BOUT every age, every level of fitness, people new to boxing, experienced boxers and everyone in between. Why box instead of just working out at the gym? Because what your body goes through during a 45 minute class at BOUT is unlike any other class or individual workout that you can experience.
Alek Kucich, the owner and head trainer, makes sure that each client receives the ultimate BOUT experience. Kucich’s team of trainers are diverse, ranging from certified group fitness instructors to certified boxing trainers. Their combined experience helps facilitate cutting-edge group classes, as well as individual private
training sessions. Kucich is extremely grateful for the village of Roslyn and its residents for embracing him; his way of thanking them is by offering emergency service personnel discounted rates, by hosting charity boxing sessions where a portion of the proceeds benefits various charities, by handing out roses to the mothers in attendance for classes on Mother’s Day, as well as donating to local community groups. BOUT also participates in after-school programs by offering boxing classes at local schools, as they recently did at St. Mary’s Elementary School and at Buckley Country Day School. The “bring a friend to a group class” program is a great way to gain discounts and free classes, simply by bringing a new friend to a class. BOUT’s website is the best place to sign up for group classes and to view its weekly schedule. For individual inquiries about private or special events, or to host a charity event at BOUT, send an email to info@boutboxingusa.com.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR
Karl V. Anton, Jr., Publisher, Anton Community Newspapers, 1984-2000
SCHUMER SUPPORTS CCPA Dear Fellow Legislator: I write to express my support for the passage of the Climate and Community Protection Act (CCPA) (S.2992/A.3876), introduced in the New York State Assembly by Assembly Member Steve Englebright and in the Senate by Senator Todd Kaminsky. I applaud them, the broad coalition of environmental, labor, community and economic justice groups supporting the bill, and the bills’ 68 assembly and 35 Senate sponsors for their leadership and commitment to passing this bold climate change policy for the state—one that will help vulnerable communities and create a tremendous number of new, family-sustaining jobs for fellow New Yorkers. We live in unprecedented times. We are witnessing human-caused climate change—in the form of increased severe storms, floods, droughts, wildfires and other extreme weather events—causing loss of life and damage to people’s livelihoods all over the country and world. The global scientific consensus has called on governments, industry and civil society to take action now to keep temperatures from rising above levels that would lead to long-term catastrophic climate change impacts. I believe we must prioritize the urgency of climate change and the need to take bold steps to aggressively confront it, and that is exactly what the CCPA does, and it is what I am fighting for in the U.S. Congress. I have insisted that any federal infrastructure plan must have clean-energy and pro-climate policies, including investments in electric vehicles, energy efficiency and a modernized electric grid to aid the transmission of renewables like wind and solar. Likewise, I am fighting for the inclusion

of battery storage, electric vehicle and additional wind and solar tax incentives as part of any tax extenders package. Along with our valued partners who lead the House of Representatives, we will also push in the appropriations process for funding for cleaner electric buses, resiliency, equitable clean-energy transitions and energy-efficient building incentives. I have also formed a Senate Democrats Special Committee on the Climate Crisis to continue to highlight the need for a bold climate change agenda. While New York has taken some very significant steps to address these challenges, more remains to be done. As states, municipalities and other local jurisdictions around the country responding to the lack of leadership from the current administration take on the mantle of passing ambitious climate legislation that supports equitable transition to 100 percent clean, renewable energy, New York can take a leading role in reducing emissions and investing in communities that are affected by the impacts of climate change. From farms across the state battling changing weather patterns, to cities facing urban heat risks, to the many communities on New York’s
coasts threatened by storms and rising water levels, New Yorkers are already facing the impacts of climate change. As we address these challenges, we must also keep sight that communities that have faced historic discrimination, oftentimes low-income communities and communities of color, often bear too much of the burden of industrial pollution and can also be at greater risk of climate change impacts. In addressing climate change, we must protect and invest in the communities that are the most vulnerable. The CCPA before the legislature, if passed, would be the most robust climate policy package passed by any state in the country. The legislation calls for a just transition to a renewable energy economy, good jobs for many tens of thousands of New Yorkers and investment in communities at the front lines of climate change and pollution. The CCPA mandates New York State achieve 100 percent greenhouse gas emissions reductions and a transition to renewable energy, economy-wide, by 2050. The bill directs 40 percent of all state energy investments to benefit disadvantaged communities and creates strong wage and contracting standards for jobs that will be created in a renewable
energy transition. The CCPA represents an achievable framework for implementing the kind of changes we need to boldly confront climate change. Passage of the CCPA would position New York to lead the national debate on how we can tackle climate change and would offer an example for other states to follow—on how to do so while also building a more just and equitable economy. With the CCPA, New York State can reduce emissions and catalyze green infrastructure development with projects like community solar, energy efficiency retrofits, offshore wind, electric buses, mass transit expansion and more. A transition to a 100 percent clean, renewable energy economy is estimated to create more than 200,000 jobs in New York in the first decade. Taking bold action today is a down payment on the state’s future. If we rise to the climate challenge, we can create tens of thousands of good clean energy jobs, while we protect vulnerable communities—and secure a viable and vibrant future for those who will come after us. I look forward to working with you as we confront these challenges. —Charles E. Schumer United States Senator

SCHOOL NEWS
BY CAROLINE RYAN
cryan@antonmediagroup.com
On Tuesday, May 21, community members in Roslyn voted “yes” on the 2019-20 school budget totaling $113,190,196. The budget was approved 559 votes to 138. The budget called for a spending increase of 2.94 percent. The projected tax levy increased by 1.97 percent, the 11th consecutive year that Roslyn’s budget has been below the tax levy limit imposed by the state. Superintendent of Schools Allison Brown said in a statement, “I never cease to be amazed and humbled by the support this community shows for its public schools. All of our residents should know that we are grateful for that support and do not take it for granted. Rather than make us complacent, a “yes” vote inspires us to work hard to earn the trust you have placed in us. We look forward with great confidence and anticipation to the 2019 school year.” Along with the passing of the budget, two unopposed trustees were reelected. Steven Litvack received 545 votes and Bruce Valauri received 536 votes. Community members were also asked to vote “yes” to the purchase of school buses and vans for the district for a total of $457,014.08; as well as $7,400,000 from the 2015 Construction Capital Reserve Fund for the purpose of performing renovations. These renovations will include an update to playgrounds and surfaces at Harbor Hill and Heights elementary schools, an update to the high school science rooms and girls locker room, exterior and interior doors for the middle school, renovations of the gymnasiums at Heights Elementary and the high school main gymnasium,
upgrades to the HVAC system at Harbor Hill School and drainage and irrigation of the fields at the Harbor Hill and Heights elementary schools. In addition to the school budget, the Bryant Library’s budget was also on the ballot and was approved 576 to 118. Library Director Victor Caputo said, “The Bryant Library Board of Trustees, administration and staff wish to thank the Roslyn community for their continued support. We look forward to continuing to provide you, our patrons, with the excellent service you have come to expect from your library. You are the reason the library is the special place it is.” The budgets go into effect at the start of the next fiscal year on July 1. What did you think of this article? fter two rounds of grueling competition at the Long Island Junior Science and Humanities Symposium, Roslyn High School senior Brandon Lee was named the second-place winner. Lee was awarded a trip to the National Junior Science and Humanities Symposium held in Albuquerque, NM, this past April. Lee’s project, “Evaluation of Albumin-Based Therapeutics: The Safety and Efficacy of Albumin Fusion on Cytokine Half-Life Extension, Tissue-Specific Trafficking, and Toxicity,” is the culmination of two summers’ work in a pathology lab at Johns Hopkins University. His project focused on developing a safe delivery strategy for the proteins in our bodies responsible for eliciting a potent immune response. Lee explained that his study showed “that albumin has the potential to act as a vehicle by which to extend the half-lives of these proteins and direct them to the appropriate tissues in the body.”
