ith the sun shining above, Port Washington residents clad in red, white and blue filled Main Street for the annual Memorial Day Parade on May 27. Organizations—including the Henderson-Marino Post 1819 Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), American Legion Post 509, Port Washington Fire Department, the Port Washington Police District, the Knights of Columbus, the Columbiettes, local Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, Plant A Row For The Hungry, Cow Neck Peninsula Historical Society Community Chest of Port Washington, Landmark on Main Street, John Michael Marino Lodge no. 1389, Port Soccer, PYA, Schreiber marching band, Portettes, cheerleaders and more—marched from Campus Drive to Port Washington Boulevard and down Main Street as locals cheered from the sidelines, waving miniature American flags, which were passed out by chamber of commerce members for the 40th year. This year, the VFW named Maria L. Salazar to be the 2019 Grand Marshal, while the American Legion chose Arnold Kline as Grand Marshal.

American Legion Grand Marshal Arnold Kline (Photos by Christina Claus) The parade culminated with a ceremony in Sunset Park at the John Philip Sousa Memorial Bandshell. “This morning, we’re saluting those who didn’t come home from past wars and even some of those who passed away in the last year or so from Vietnam-related injuries or problems,” said American Legion Commander Arthur George, who followed with a brief biography of Kline. “As I look out today, I can only come up with one word—wow,” said VFW

Commander John Baptisto Fiore, who later spoke to Salazar’s time serving the United States. “This town turns out. How proud I stand here in reference to our fallen and see so much support, which is so needed today.” The Schreiber High School band played the “Star Spangled Banner” and “God Bless America.” Reverend Gary Parker of St. Stephen’s Church gave an invocation to begin. “Today, we are here to honor those that have served our country and given

their lives, so we may stand here and still live in freedom,” prayed Parker. “We need to be constantly reminded of our gift of freedom and of those who gave all to make sure future generations continue to know life and a free, democratic society. Remembering those who have passed is only half of the task that is before us today. We must also carry their love, honor and duty forward for the future generation. Our children must know who they were, what they did and why they did it. And to do anything less would be a disservice to their sacrifice and their memories. Those that are gone created a clear pathway for us to continue on.” Do you have a story you want to tell? Share it with me at cclaus@antonmedia group.com.

Port North Talks 101 Winners Circle, Bombay Kitchen By Christina Claus

O

n May 22, the Village of Port Washington North Board of Trustees met for its regular monthly meeting, during which it held a public hearing for a conditional use permit and site plan review of Bombay Kitchen, 85 Channel Dr., and heard a presentation for 101 Winners Circle, the old Publishers Clearing House property.

101 Winners Circle

In October of 2018, president of West Rac Contracing Corp. and developer Gary Krupnick presented the idea to change the old Publishers Clearing House building at 101 Winner’s Circle into four sound stages, similar to the Grumman Studios located in Bethpage. On May 22, Bld Architecture president Alex Badalamenti and design director Jeremy Linzee presented on behalf of the building’s owner, Parviz Farahzad (also owner of Grumman Studios), a six-sound-stage film studio for the site. The plans the two informally presented to the Village of Port Washington North Board of Trustees would turn the 100,000-square-foot building at the

VILLAGE NEWS

Grant Secured For Baxter Estates

N

assau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton (D-Glen Cove) recently secured $15,000 in county funding to support the Village of Baxter Estates’ ongoing efforts to stem the tide of coastal erosion. “I am committed to working closely with our coastal villages to prevent erosion from impacting the ecosystems we treasure and compromising the infrastructure we rely on,” said DeRiggi-Whitton. “Providing these funds will play a role in allowing the Village of Baxter Estates to make informed decisions that will reap rewards for many years to come.” The funding, which was approved by the full Nassau County Legislature on Monday, May 20, will be provided to the village through an intermunicipal agreement and drawn from $2 million DeRiggi-Whitton previously secured for the Shore Road Port Washington Stabilization capital project. The village will use those funds to hire a consulting engineer that will

prepare a conceptual shoreline study of Baxter Beach addressing beach erosion, Shore Road flooding, beautification and pedestrian connectivity of the Bay Walk path. The firm hired will utilize the New York Consolidated Funding Application (CFA) to search for, prepare and submit a CFA grant application on behalf of the Village of Baxter Estates. Baxter Estates approved of the intermunicipal agreement between the county and the village at the Jan. 2 meeting. The description of the project explains, Shore Road is a Nassau County roadway that is utilized by more than 8,000 cars daily and serves as one of two emergency evacuation routes for the Port peninsula, including the Villages of Port Washington North, Manorhaven and Sands Point. The erosion concerns include failing gabion units, undermining of the existing sidewalk and roadway, soil loss, reduction of vegetation and

reduction of natural beach area. “Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton recognized immediately that we had a beach erosion and flooding problem, which would ultimately undermine Shore Road,” said Baxter Estates Mayor Nora Haagenson. “She acted promptly on our behalf and was able to secure a $15,000 grant for us to do a Conceptual Phase Shoreline Study of the Baxter Beach waterfront. The study will focus on mitigation of coastal erosion, pedestrian connectivity, landscape aesthetic, necessary permitting and providing an order of magnitude budget of construction costs so that we may establish a

Conceptual Plan.” Haagenson furthered that once the study is complete, the village is hoping the state and county will proceed further with funding to mitigate the problem and stabilize the beach. “We are so thankful to Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton and County Executive Laura Curran for their leadership and support of our village and our waterfront, which is enjoyed by so many Port Washington residents and visitors,” said Haagenson. —Submitted by Nassau County with additional reporting by Christina Claus

Guggenheim Grows

n May 21, Guggenheim Elementary School unveiled its new addition just after school staff and Port Washington Board of Education members cut the red ribbon. “It’s been, from the beginning to the end, wonderful to watch,” said Guggenheim Principal Barbara Giebel. “It’s very exciting. Every once in a while, I’d ask to take a sneak peak and they’d let me walk back here and just remembering what it looked like looking at the plans then when they first started, organizing and cement coming in and walls going up, it’s just been a metamorphosis and I’m so thrilled.” Giebel explained Guggenheim was one of the more crowded elementary schools in the district and this addition will allow for some elbow room. “We literally had no space for anything or anyone,” said Giebel. “We had teachers in closets for many years and students crammed into classrooms because we really didn’t have the space for them. Now with the addition, the teachers who have been in closets will

We gave up a lot for a while to get what we needed.” The new addition to the school adds three regular classrooms, an ESTEAM Lab, six small classrooms for special area teachers, a multi-purpose room, two offices for band and orchestra and two bathrooms. “We’re very excited,” said president of the Port Washington Board of Education Karen Sloan. “[The ESTEAM] Lab is going to allow us to provide enrichment for the entire school and for individual groups in the school. It’s going to be used in so many different ways and take the kids into the future. We’re just thrilled.” Construction for this project began in November of 2017 and the space will be used in full capacity by September of 2019. The funding for the project came from the bond that was approved by the community in 2015. The

What An Inspiration Dr. Ruth Westheimer shares her wisdom—and her past BY SHERI ARBITALJACOBY

L

sarbitaljacoby@antonmediagroup.com

ucky attendees at the Gold Coast International Film Festival’s screening of Ask Dr. Ruth witnessed the brilliance, courage and drive of America’s most famous sex therapist during a live Q&A with Dr. Ruth Westheimer at Great Neck Squire Cinemas on Wednesday, May 8. For those who missed her, she will return to Long Island on Sunday, June 2, for Temple Judea of Manhasset’s gala. “There’s no such thing as normal,” said the petite nonagenarian Holocaust survivor, whose uninhibited approach to sex therapy and education transformed the conversation around sexuality, promising “the best sex you’ve ever had,” if you listened to her. A private prescreening reception was held at Rothchilds Coffee and Kitchen in Great Neck, where guests had an opportunity to take photographs with Dr. Ruth and the chance to have her autograph Roller-coaster Grandma: The Amazing Story of Dr. Ruth, one of the nearly 50 books she’s written. The 100-minute documentary by Ryan White chronicles Dr. Ruth’s incredible life, capturing her exuberant and witty personality. At almost 91, she still lives life to its fullest, in spite of her tragic beginnings. “At 90, I’m still talking about sex,” said Dr. Ruth in her signature thick German accent. “With all I’ve been through, I have an obligation to live large.” With her petite stature, and classic mantra that “size doesn’t matter,” Dr. Ruth aims to positively impact people’s lives. “I’m 4 foot, 7 inches, but feel like 6-feet tall when people say positive things,” admitted Dr. Ruth, who will be 91 on June 4. A household name in the 1980s and ’90s, her infectious energy is illuminated in the film through clips of radio, TV, commercials and major motion picture appearances, interspersed with anecdotes shared by her family, longtime friends and colleagues, along with vintage photos and hand-painted illustrations that bring her childhood as an orphan of the Holocaust to life. Born in Germany in 1928, Dr. Ruth was sent to a children’s home in Switzerland at age 10 to escape the Nazis. When girls weren’t permitted to continue their education past eighth grade, Dr. Ruth’s thirst for knowledge was sated by a male friend, who would sleep under her bed at night while she read his school books. At 17, she immigrated to Palestine, where she fought for the country’s independence as a member of the Haganah, the Jewish freedom fighters. She then studied at the Sorbonne in Paris, prior to sailing to the U.S. in 1956, where she obtained a master’s in Sociology from the New School of Social Research and

America’s most famous sex therapist signs copies of her book before a screening of Ask Dr. Ruth at the Gold Coast International Film Festival. Photo by Sheri ArbitalJacoby a Doctorate of Education in the Interdisciplinary Study of the Family from Columbia University Teacher’s College when she was 45. Still wanting to learn more, she studied human sexuality at New York Hospital– Cornell University Medical Center, where she became an adjunct associate professor. The documentary revisited her painful past and unlikely path to a career as a psychosexual therapist who pioneered discussing sexual matters frankly on radio with her program, Sexually Speaking. The call-in show began in September 1980 as a 15-minute taped segment that aired on WYNY-FM (NBC) in New York after midnight on Sundays to fulfill the station’s requirement for educational programming. It became so popular that one year later, she answered questions from listeners on a live, one-hour program airing at 10 p.m., and entertained many New Yorkers during their drive home from weekends in the Hamptons. The unstoppable Dr. Ruth expanded her reach by sharing her expertise through TV, books, newspapers, games, home video,

computer software, as well as at www.drruth .com and on Twitter at AskDrRuth. She even launched her own line of low-alcohol wines, Dr. Ruth’s Vin D’amour, and shows no sign of slowing down as she still teaches at her alma mater, Columbia’s Teachers College, and Hunter College and continues to lecture worldwide. There’s a play about her, Becoming Dr. Ruth; a calendar, Dr. Ruth’s Good Sex Night-to-Night Calendar; and a board game, Dr. Ruth’s Game of Good Sex. She’s also on the board of the Museum of Jewish Heritage and encourages everyone to see the Auschwitz exhibit on display. Like any good Jewish mother and grandmother, Dr. Ruth kvelled over her grandchildren and repeatedly inquired throughout the film to make sure those around her had eaten. Despite her fame, she’s lived in the same New York City apartment for 50 years, because that’s her home. Losing her own parents so young, her two children and four grandchildren hold a very special place in her heart. “My grandchildren are the most important,” stressed Dr. Ruth. “Hitler is dead and me and my four grandchildren are alive. I’m delighted about my grandchildren. No one has grandchildren like me.” To see Dr. Ruth in Manhasset, visit www. temple-judea.com or call 516-621-8049.

Now in its sixth year, the shop has become a destination for people all over Long Island, as well as Queens, Brooklyn and Manhattan. “In addition to our local customers, we have shoppers who stop in whenever they are in town from England and Japan,” said Jacquelyn Conte, co-owner. Colorful flags are strewn across the ceiling in the back portion of the shop

to denote the location of The Gallery space. “We wanted to keep an open flow throughout the shop, but felt it was also important for our artists to have their own dwellings”, explained

Karmacue A Success

And the People’s Choice Champion with more than 300 votes is Pork Washington. Standing with them is Adam Novick of Alper’s True Value Hardware.

By Port Washington News Staff portwashington@antonmediagroup.com

A

lper’s True Value Hardware’s Adam Novick coined the name Karmecue and defined it as “a rewarded state of happiness achieved while eating great BBQ for a great cause.” Each year, Port Washington residents fill the streets to enjoy great barbecue and vie for the title of BBQ Champions. On May 19, 10 teams of backyard BBQers competed for both a People’s Choice Award (ribs only) and a judged competition (ribs and chicken). Chef Stephen White was the work judge and Robyn Croutch was the judging coordinator. Winners included: •F irst Place Chicken: BBQ’s Brothers • Second Place Chicken: Kick Ash • Third Place Chicken: New Pigs on the Block • First Place Ribs: HG que • Second Place Ribs: New Pigs on the Block

Narcan Continues To Reduce Deaths From Opioid Overdoses With more than half of the residents in New York saying they have been touched in some way by the opioid epidemic, understanding the reasons and having the power to potentially save the life of someone who is overdosing becomes more and more important than ever before. As dangerous and addictive as heroin is on its own, it is often laced with powerful drugs like fentanyl (100 times stronger than morphine) and even carfentanyl, an elephant tranquilizer, which is 1,000

times stronger than heroin. These high-potency drugs are adding to the horrific statistics of overdose deaths. Although the opioid epidemic continues, deaths from overdoses are declining in areas where EMS, police and the general public are trained and have Narcan kits. Narcan (naxolone) nasal spray is simple to administer and cannot harm someone who is not overdosing from an opioid. On Monday, June 3, Nassau County Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton is

sponsoring a Narcan education and training session. The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at The Chabad, 80 Shore Rd. in Port Washington. “These events not only provide people with life-saving Narcan kits, but also arms them with the knowledge about how easily addictive opiates are, whether in heroin or prescription pill form,” Legislator DeRiggi-Whitton said. “Understanding how this terrible drug works is the first step in combatting the epidemic. I urge everyone

to attend one of these eye-opening meetings. We thank Rabbi Paltiel and The Chabad for providing the space to conduct this important training.” Everyone in attendance (18 years or older) will receive a Narcan kit and a certificate. There is no fee for the training or kit, but registration is required. Contact Legislator DeRiggiWhitton’s office at 516-571-6211 or online at nassaucountyny.gov/overdosetraining to register. —Submitted by the office of Legislator Delia DeRiggi-Whitton

Preserve Playground Unveiled

O

n, Monday, May 27, the Sands Point Preserve Conservancy held a grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony of its newest addition—the Woodland Playground. Located in the woods next to the Phil DeJana Learning Center, the playground features state-ofthe-art equipment, including a custom-designed cedar castle with towers, turrets, tunnels, a spiral slide and climbing walls—along with a 75-foot zip line, rockers spinners, tether ball and a huge geodesic dome climber. Children of all ages and abilities can enjoy creative play in a rage of modalities to develop coordination, balance and strength. The conservancy and the playground committee, including Karli Hagedorn, Chiara Mai, Stacey Satovsky and Roshy Vultaggio, along with the many Butterfly Ball sponsors, were able to make this magical playground come to fruition. The Woodland Playground is also home to the new quail coop—a charming English cottage that serves as a resource for the Conservancy’s education programs. This season, 200 Bobwhite chicks will be nurtured here and released onto the preserve’s ground to help control ticks—a natural and effective form of pest management. “The Woodland Playground is a completely new approach to this type of facility—we’ve preserved the natural setting, so the area is a peaceful, safe retreat for the whole family,” said Sands Point Preserve Executive Director Beth Horn. “And the combination of play features—from a custom

cedar castle to a thrilling zip line—are unique and really fun for children of all ages and different abilities. We look forward to welcoming the whole community into this beautiful play space, which fits right in with the historic castles and ancient

woods of the Sands Point Preserve.” The playground will be open daily at 8 a.m. to 30-mintues before the preserve closes. —Submitted by the Sands Point Preserve Conservancy

Coach Michiel Bartman stands with Caleb Bosgang, Eli Ross, Luca Barbosa, Ian Bresowsky, Eric Epstein, Connor Lam and Trey McDermott raced in the Men’s Junior Eight event finishing third overall, yet placed first for club teams earning the right to proudly be called New York State champs. Not pictured is coxswain Shelley Philipson.

ROWING from page 16 Lindsey Rust (Roslyn), Carter Shields (Port Washington), Michele Lanfant (Port Washington), Isabella Argyros (Port Washington), Riley FanningHughes (Port Washington), Laura Maroney (Port Washington), Dalia Bercow (Port Washington) and Paige Lind (Roslyn) are all headed to the sunshine state for nationals the week of June 4. “It means a lot,” said Rahman of the girls qualifying for nationals. “I’m grateful as a coach. If they’re able to do something like qualify themselves, it makes me proud. They’re the ones performing, putting in the sweat, grit and hard work. Seeing them hit their targets and go through this process, grind and compete, it’s just great to see. The kids wake up in the morning, train and work hard and try to do the best they can. This is just a reward for them—getting to go to a higher level—because they’re willing to

put in those hours.” The Youth National Championships serves as the premier youth rowing event in the United States and sees about 1,500 athletes competing in more than 350 crews, representing approximately 150 teams from across the country—all vying for national titles in 18 boat classes. “It’s really competitive,” said Rahman. “Crews come from all over the country. It’s top boats, even the boat that finishes in the bottom, works hard to even be the last team at the event. You show up and everyone is the fastest from where they train.” Rahman explained that he’s just excited for the girls to go to the event, see the other teams that are out there and “stay in touch with the speed,” so the girls can find out what standards they’re aiming for and set new goals. —Additional information provided by Port Rowing

nder the stewardship of Coach Shane Helfner, the Port Washington boys varsity tennis team has won the Long Island championship for the first time in the team’s history. The victory came after a win against Syosset at the Nassau County championships. Port defeated Syosset, 4-3, with important wins from doubles teams Charlie Dash and Josh Rosen, as well as Luke Zohouri and Allan Pevzner. The match won by Zohouri and Pevzner clinched the win for the Vikings and gave them their first county championship since 2000. “Coach Helfner had been talking about this match all season. To actually get there and win the county championships was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity,” said junior Mitchell Klee. After claiming the Nassau County title, the Vikings advanced to the Long Island championships in Commack. There, they faced Half Hollow Hills East, the Suffolk County champions. It was a clash of the tennis titans who had won their respective county championships.

The match lived up to its hyped expectations. The Vikings came out firing on all cylinders, winning four of the first five matches. They established a dominating presence on the courts from the very first serve. Singles players Alex Karman and Gabrielle Brancatelli won their matches 6-1, 6-0, and 6-0, 6,0, respectively. In addition, Dash and Rosen won their match, 7-5, 6-0, and doubles team Sam Schaub and Rajen Parekh won, 6-2, 6-3. Overall, the Vikings won 4-3 to secure the Long Island championship. The team universally acknowledges that their success this season could not have been achieved

without Coach Helfner. “Coach has been an amazing motivator for the team the entire season,” said Rosen. “From our first practice to the early mornings and our last practice, he has always been there to push us to play our best and win with pride and class.” Unwavering hard work and commitment paid off for the Vikings as they now proudly proclaim their title as Long Island champions.
