hase Brodsky, a seventh grader at Jericho’s Temple Or Elohim, is one of just four teenagers on Long Island to receive this year’s Friedlander Upstander Award from the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Nassau County. The $2,500 scholarship recognizes students “who have shown themselves to be Upstanders against intolerance in any of its forms.” “It really means a lot to me,” Brodsky said. “After my Bat Mitzvah, I really wanted to focus on being an Upstander because it’s something really important to do.”

Brodsky, as part of her two mitzvah projects, first donated instruments for people who can’t afford them, and then had a venture called “Sababa,” which means awesome in Hebrew. It was her way to give back to the community and to Israel, she said. “I didn’t think I was going to win,” she said. The award, in its ninth year, is sponsored by the Clair Friedlander Family Foundation. Friedlander was a Holocaust survivor who came to New York in 1949. Composer Joe Iconis Makes Broadway History BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA kdijkstra@antonmediagroup.com

When Be More Chill opened on Broadway in March, it was a dream come true for Joe Iconis. The Garden City native wrote the music and lyrics for the musical comedy adapted from the young adult novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini. The story of how this musical made it to the Broadway stage—the Lyceum Theatre stage, no less—is unlike any other, thanks to the fans who identified with the material so much, they wouldn’t let it fade into obscurity. “We...talk about anxiety and depression and these things that plague our society, but we...do it through this unexpected sci-fi comedy lens,” he said, and he has gotten nothing but positive feedback from fans who see parts of themselves in the characters. “I’ve been lucky enough to meet [many] Be More Chill fans in person…So many young people come up to me and say ‘Thank you for making something that feels celebratory, while still dealing with all of these issues that I go through.’” That’s what makes Be More Chill stand out from the crowd. Though

it’s about an ingestible super-computer that teaches its teenage host to ‘be more chill,’ there’s a lot going on, and depth that might be easy to miss at first glance. Following the run at Two River Theater in New Jersey in 2015, Be More Chill was effectively dead, living on only through the cast recording and tales of those fortunate enough to have seen the original production. A YouTube video of “Michael in the Bathroom,” the catchy and emotional anthem of the show, posted in 2017 went viral and essentially created the demand that this show return to the stage—which it did OffBroadway in 2018. Iconis has been rewarded for his efforts with a Tony Award nomination for best original score, as well as Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations. The composer

and lyricist refers to his musical as a celebration of suburban weirdness. “We wanted it to play out in malls and in bathrooms and in house parties and backstage at high school auditoriums, which is my youth,” Iconis said. “I was definitely thinking about Roosevelt Field when I was writing the mall stuff.” Musical theater has been a part of Iconis’ life since childhood. Though his family was not in the industry, they fostered his love of theater. He also credits the music education offered by the Garden City school district with shaping his future. “I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have that access to music as a kid,” he said. In junior high, Iconis participated in the musicals by playing piano in the pit. He later learned to “properly exploit his love of the-

ater” by becoming the musical director for the Garden City Community Theatre and running the Hofstra Musical Theater Summer Camp. Since then, he’s written quite a few cabaret shows and musicals, including The Black Suits, about a Long Island high school garage band, and several more on the horizon. Broadway Bounty Hunter will open this July at the Greenwich House Off-Broadway. The musical written for Annie Golden tells the story of a theater actress of a certain age who is down on her luck and feeling the effects of a sexist, ageist society. “Through a series of events, she gets wrapped up in the world of bounty hunting [and begins] an adventure to South America to capture a drug lord,” Iconis explained. “It’s told in the style of exploitation films of the ’70s so it has this really cool R&B, funk score.” Stay tuned for Love in Hate Nation and The Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical, as well as a Be More Chill movie. For the latest, Visit mrjoeiconis.com and bemorechillmusical.com.

The Best Memorial Day Tribute Although both of my grandfathers, many uncles and men from my wife’s side of the family have fought in the United States Armed Forces, I am glad to say that none have perished (although my wife’s grandfather Milton Segal, the lead bombardier in D-Day, was officially dead for six months). Jewish people have served in the U.S. Armed Forces far beyond our numerical proportion in the general population and have served with distinction, garnering thousands of awards. In fact, some of the oldest veteran organizations are Jewish. But what are the United States Armed Forces fighting for? What is so important that so many brave Americans have had to make the ultimate sacrifice? On Memorial Day, we pay tribute to those who died in service, and our hearts and minds are reminded of the reason that they paid the ultimate price on our behalf. The greatest concentration of the best of the world is found right here in America and the rest of the world relies on America for all manner of support. Here in America,

we need to recognize the historical mission that God has placed in our hands at a time when morality, truth and liberty are fighting for survival both at home and abroad. America’s culture of tolerance and freedom is a unique opportunity for unhindered material and spiritual growth. This uniquely American privilege is definitely worth fighting for. The Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, extolled the vision of the founding fathers, one of a country in which “In God We Trust,” without fear of repercussion. The very first sentence of the First Amendment of the U.S.

Shari Egnasko

Constitution secures our inalienable right to freedom of religion (not freedom from religion). This is a right that millions throughout the world would die for, and many of our best and brightest have died protecting. It’s a country dictated on the premise of kindness, which allows for everyone to worship freely and supports education and humanitarian efforts. Success as a nation and as a positive actor on the world stage is rooted in our professed relationship with God, under whose sovereignty we proclaim in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Unfortunately, recently, our right to worship has come under attack from all sides. Without these rights, as guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution and professed in all canons of American life, we would be doomed to chaos and self-destruction. Surely, those who fought and died for our right to worship, would not want their sacrifice to be in vain. It is up to us to exercise our rights as fully as possible and to proactively seek furtherance of the most seminal of American ideals. This is the best tribute we can give on this Memorial Day.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR THE TALE OF REASSESSMENT When Ed Mangano was the county executive, Nassau County rubber-stamped grievances granting reductions to 75 percent of those who requested one, while freezing everyone else’s property values. It has been well-documented that the result was a shift in the tax burden from those who grieved to those who did not. County Executive Laura Curran campaigned on fixing the broken assessment system, which had been abandoned by the previous administration and the Republican legislative majority. This caused much concern among Nassau County residents who wondered if the process would be fair, and more importantly,

would they see a tax increase. Let’s be clear on one thing: Nassau County will not be collecting a single cent more in property tax revenue as a result from reassessment. Legislator John Ferretti and his Republican majority, instead of being the voice of the people and expressing concerns or suggesting how to improve the process, decided instead to politicize it. They exploited their constituents’ fears and pointed fingers instead of offering practical solutions. Yes, there were gaffes, yet they were fixed promptly and did not create errors in the new assessments. The biggest blunder was done by furious Ferretti and his Republican colleagues for the past eight years. They ignored the broken assessment system and swept the issue under the rug so their campaign coffers

could be filled by the likes of Maidenbaum and other property tax grievance firms. Now, the only “solution” I’ve heard from John Ferretti and the Republican entourage is to move back to an elected tax assessor. This idea is ludicrous, as the Republicans are trying to further politicize the process that will restore tax accuracy and fairness. Here is what is being missed in all their shouting: • The reassessment has eliminated the disparities that were created during Mangano’s tenure. Those who didn’t appeal were paying a rate that was 29.2 percent higher than those who did. That rate is now only 0.1 percent. • Currently, property tax assessments are off by approximately 8.8 percent, well within industry standards. County

Executive Curran’s tax payer protection plan will improve the fairness and accuracy beginning in its first year. • Less than half of the population will see their taxes increase, while 55 percent of them will see their taxes decrease. The Republicans froze the rolls and a lot can change in 10 years. • Among those who saw their taxes increase, can you guess who is shouting the loudest? Yup, people on the Gold Coast. Money does indeed talk. • Not nearly a decade ago the voters of Nassau County overwhelmingly voted by referendum to change to an appointed tax assessor from and elected one. • And if you think your assessment is not fair, you still have the right to grieve. —Fran Avnet

Local Students Win Merit Award Syosset High School students Sabrina Eager and Michael Wang were named recipients of the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Award. They will each receive a $2,500 scholarship in recognition of their academic and personal achievements. The duo was selected from a pool of more than 15,000 finalists nationwide in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. About 1.6 million students enter the competition annually. This year, 31 Syosset High School students were named as commended students, 10 were named semifinalists and nine were named finalists. Students initially qualify for the competition by scoring among the highest in the state on the preliminary SAT/

National Merit Scholarship qualifying test. Less than 1 percent of the nation’s high school seniors were named semifinalists on a state-representational basis. The National Merit Scholarship Program is an academic competition that began in 1955. Students are judged on academic achievement, standardized test scores, contributions in school and community activities and potential for success in rigorous college studies. Students are also required to submit an essay and a recommendation from a high school official. About 7,600 finalists will earn the “Merit Scholar” title in 2019 and receive a total of more than $31 million in college scholarships. —Submitted by the Syosset School District

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

Having Fun While Winning BY JOSEPH WOLKIN

D

jwolkin@antonmediagroup.com

o not mess with Allison Ng. She appears to be a shy teenager. But in reality, she’s one of the strongest badminton players in the nation. Ng, who attends Jericho High School, just captured her second straight Nassau County varsity girls badminton title. Facing Great Neck South’s Kayla Wu in the county championship battle at Long Beach High School last weekend, Ng took over. Winning two of three sets against Wu, 21-18, 18-21, 21-19, Ng led the way as the Jericho Jayhawks sealed the deal to take home the crown. “She’s fantastic,” head coach Mark Burkowsky said. “She’s a quiet and shy girl. But on the court, you would never know it. She’s as quick as lightning, has amazing foot work and a selection of shots that come from anywhere.” The individual title is Ng’s second straight for Jericho. As a sophomore, she is determined to continue growing this team for the next two years. “The goal is to keep our title as county champions,” she said. “I need to be more confident in myself.” Over the course of five years, Ng’s confidence has grown exponentially. When she hits the court, opponents know she is a force to be reckoned with.

Badminton, which originated in 19th century Britain, is one of the more unconventional sports in modern-day America. Few play it seriously, mostly as a recreational activity. But for those who join varsity teams, scholarships and potential Olympic stardom can occur. Currently, Ng is focused on the present. She wants to win title No. 3 for the Jayhawks. “I’ve been training for a longer time than other people have,” she said. “I’ve been working harder at this sport than other people have. I train maybe four days a week. It’s really hard sometimes. It’s tiring. Sometimes, you have to put badminton and school work together. You might not have the time to do something.” With Burkowsky’s leadership, Ng can very well become one of—if not the best—badminton stars in the history of Long Island. “It’s pretty fun,” Ng said. “It’s a bit hard, but all of the people on the team and the coach makes it a fun place to be at. I thought badminton is an interesting sport because people always think of it as something to play for fun. When I started going into badminton, the people who were already playing were really good at it. I wanted to be better than them.” What did you think of this article?
