Ceremony Held For Oyster Bay Eagle Scout BY JILL NOSSA

n Oyster Bay High School senior recently rose to the ranks of Eagle Scout, a status very few Scouts achieve. In a special ceremony held at Oyster Bay High School on a sunny Saturday afternoon, Dylan Kaber of Oyster Bay-East Norwich Boy Scout Troop 253 was officially named an Eagle Scout. At 17 years old and after 11 years of scouting, Kaber followed through on his project to achieve the top rank. “This is what it means to be the best of the best,” said Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino. “We’re always striving to make this town better; we share that commitment to excellence. That’s what you’ve proven and what you’ll continue to prove through your professional career and all that you do.” Saladino was joined by Vicky Walsh, Richard LaMarca and Judge Rhonda Fischer, who each congratulated Kaber and thanked him for being an inspiration before presenting him with a citation from Town of Oyster Bay.
Dylan Kaber with his parents, Wendy and John. (Photo by Jill Nossa) “Every day, I see people of all ages making poor decisions and today we see somebody making the right decisions,” said Fischer. “I applaud you and if you continue on this road, you’ll have a wonderful and bright future.” Saladino noted that the citation reads “good luck” and said, “Dylan doesn’t need any luck. Through this process, he has proven his abilities.” Kaber thanked all of his leaders, Scoutmasters and mentors and discussed the project that earned him the Eagle Scout status: the creation
of bluebird houses at Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. “I chose this project because there is a decline in the local bluebird population due to a decrease in habitable space,” said Kaber. “These beautiful birds will not only make the park more lively, but will help control the mosquito population.” He, along with volunteers, built and installed 11 bluebird houses. The project required Kaber to “plan, lead, teach, budget and implement the project from start to finish.”
Kaber noted that the path to achieving his rank was a long one, a goal he did not initially have, but something he is proud to have accomplished. “When I joined the troop, I thought I would only stick around for the camping trips. Becoming an Eagle Scout was something I could never imagine happening,” said Kaber. “If I’d been allowed to quit, today would just be another weekend afternoon. But by staying with the troop, I gained appreciation for time spent with my peers.” Kaber follows three peers who became Eagle Scouts earlier this year. Kristofer Johnson, Steven Masiakos and Chris Syrett earned the rank in March. “I volunteer my time because of the important life skills the boys learn,” said Assistant Scoutmaster Mary Ellen Bott. “We are here to develop leaders. I’m very proud them.” What did you think of this article? Share your thoughts with me by email at: jnossa@ antonmediagroup.com

Composer Joe Iconis Makes Broadway History BY KIMBERLY DIJKSTRA kdijkstra@antonmediagroup.com
When Be More Chill opened on Broadway in March, it was a dream come true for Joe Iconis. The Garden City native wrote the music and lyrics for the musical comedy adapted from the young adult novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini. The story of how this musical made it to the Broadway stage—the Lyceum Theatre stage, no less—is unlike any other, thanks to the fans who identified with the material so much, they wouldn’t let it fade into obscurity. “We...talk about anxiety and depression and these things that plague our society, but we...do it through this unexpected sci-fi comedy lens,” he said, and he has gotten nothing but positive feedback from fans who see parts of themselves in the characters. “I’ve been lucky enough to meet [many] Be More Chill fans in person…So many young people come up to me and say ‘Thank you for making something that feels celebratory, while still dealing with all of these issues that I go through.’” That’s what makes Be More Chill stand out from the crowd. Though
it’s about an ingestible super-computer that teaches its teenage host to ‘be more chill,’ there’s a lot going on, and depth that might be easy to miss at first glance. Following the run at Two River Theater in New Jersey in 2015, Be More Chill was effectively dead, living on only through the cast recording and tales of those fortunate enough to have seen the original production. A YouTube video of “Michael in the Bathroom,” the catchy and emotional anthem of the show, posted in 2017 went viral and essentially created the demand that this show return to the stage—which it did OffBroadway in 2018. Iconis has been rewarded for his efforts with a Tony Award nomination for best original score, as well as Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk nominations. The composer

and lyricist refers to his musical as a celebration of suburban weirdness. “We wanted it to play out in malls and in bathrooms and in house parties and backstage at high school auditoriums, which is my youth,” Iconis said. “I was definitely thinking about Roosevelt Field when I was writing the mall stuff.” Musical theater has been a part of Iconis’ life since childhood. Though his family was not in the industry, they fostered his love of theater. He also credits the music education offered by the Garden City school district with shaping his future. “I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have that access to music as a kid,” he said. In junior high, Iconis participated in the musicals by playing piano in the pit. He later learned to “properly exploit his love of the-
ater” by becoming the musical director for the Garden City Community Theatre and running the Hofstra Musical Theater Summer Camp. Since then, he’s written quite a few cabaret shows and musicals, including The Black Suits, about a Long Island high school garage band, and several more on the horizon. Broadway Bounty Hunter will open this July at the Greenwich House Off-Broadway. The musical written for Annie Golden tells the story of a theater actress of a certain age who is down on her luck and feeling the effects of a sexist, ageist society. “Through a series of events, she gets wrapped up in the world of bounty hunting [and begins] an adventure to South America to capture a drug lord,” Iconis explained. “It’s told in the style of exploitation films of the ’70s so it has this really cool R&B, funk score.” Stay tuned for Love in Hate Nation and The Unauthorized Hunter S. Thompson Musical, as well as a Be More Chill movie. For the latest, Visit mrjoeiconis.com and bemorechillmusical.com.

Music Students Inspired By Visiting Composer
M
usic students at Oyster Bay High School (OBHS) gained first-hand knowledge of music composition when award-winning composer Omar Thomas, of the Peabody Conservatory of Music at John Hopkins University, visited the school as part of a Visiting Musician series. Students studied and performed his piece, “Of Our New Day Begun,” written in honor of nine victims who lost their lives to a senseless act of violence while worshiping in the historic Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC. In describing how he composed the piece, Thomas said his aim was to interpret his feelings of pain and anger while conveying the moving displays of grace and forgiveness that the victim’s
families demonstrated. “I first heard the piece at the New York State School Music Association winter conference in Rochester and immediately wanted our students to study and perform it,” said OBHS music teacher Matthew Sisia. Under Sisia’s baton, the OBHS Wind Ensemble performed the piece at the high school’s Cavalcade of Bands and again at the Long Island Wind Ensemble at Commack Middle School, which featured wind ensembles from area school districts. Thomas visited OBHS between those two performances, providing students with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and appreciation of the composing process. “[Composing is] kind of like
