roject Blue Book (PBB) was a string of studies conducted by the United States Air Force centered on the phenomenon of unidentified flying objects (UFOs). It’s also the name of a new HISTORY Channel series starring Aiden Gillen (Game of Thrones; The Wire) as Dr. J. Allen Hynek, a real-life astronomer enlisted by the military to serve as a scientific advisor to the project. The late Hynek served in that role throughout the duration of PBB, right until it was discontinued in 1969. As Hynek was often paired with a high-ranking military counterpart throughout the 17 years of PBB, so it goes in the series, where Michael Malarkey (The Vampire Diaries) serves in that role as Captain Michael Quinn.

Not unlike its factual counterpart, the series portrays the military as wanting to control the public narrative of these emerging happenings at a time of Cold War paranoia. And while Hynek was brought in to serve as a respected scientific authority, the Air Force was more interested in debunking any claims and chalking up sightings to rational explanations. Show creator, co-executive producer and writer David O’Leary grew up on the Upper West Side obsessed by UFOs. So when he saw a 2005 documentary Peter Jennings hosted that shined a light on Hynek, the seed of inspiration was planted for the current series. “I credit a 2005 documentary that the late journalist Peter Jennings hosted called Peter Jennings Reporting—UFOs: Seeing Is Believing. It was one of the last things he did before he passed away. It was America’s

very bizarre and strange history with UFOs and in that documentary, he had a whole section on Allen Hynek. That was my first realization that the chief scientific advisor for Project Blue Book, who stuck with the program for its tenure, shifted sides and went from skeptic to believer,” O’Leary explained. “His was a trained eye hired to give celestial explanations for what people were seeing in the sky. And he completely shifted sides. He not only came to believe that UFOs represented genuine history worthy of further study and what he referred to as ‘an intelligence in our skies that we have yet to understand,’ but he was also pretty convinced that the Air Force knew that. He also felt Project Blue Book itself was a campaign used to control misinformation and hide the truth about UFOs. For me, that was

just a fascinating character on which to focus a story around.” Providing the counterbalance to the Hynek and Quinn characters in this 10-episode first season is a pair of high-ranking brass, Generals James Harding and Hugh Valentine, played by Neal McDonough (Justified; Arrow) and Michael Harney (Orange Is the New Black) respectively. The duo operate with a personal agenda focused on controlling public perception of UFOs in the interest of national security. A subplot involving Russian operatives gives credence to the threat presented by the country’s Communist nemesis. For McDonough, it’s a role he’s embraced with full vigor. In a career that’s found him playing a string of military characters from First Lieutenant

Based on the real-life Nathan Farragut Twining, the former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, McDonough’s character is written with depth and complexity, just the way the Massachusetts native who plays him likes it. “I love, love, love, love playing this character, where you at first think he’s a villain. There’s this wonderful chess scene we have in one episode that serves as a first look inside of Harding where you realize that he’s actually a good guy and is a patriot doing his job as best he can. That’s what I love about this character and where it’s going to go in the future,” McDonough said. “It’s nice to find characters where you think they’re going one way and they throw a curve ball and you realize that he’s not the villain that we thought he was going to be and he’s actually a human being underneath all those characters. The real-life character he’s based on was someone named Twining, who was the youngest general in Air Force history and in the Joint

Twining so much—he did what most people didn’t have the guts to do. It’s a really great character to jump into and I’m blessed beyond belief to play this character.” Part of what makes Project Blue Book resonate so convincingly is the fact that each episode draws from actual case files blending UFO theories with documented occurrences that include the Flatwoods Monster incident that took place in West Virginia, the Gorman Dogfight of Fargo, ND and the Chiles-Whitted UFO Incident of Montgomery, AL. Furthermore, each episode ends with a one-minute synopsis of the actual case, with a lengthier version of it found on the HISTORY Channel website. For O’Leary, maintaining a balance between the world of science and an explanation of the unknown is what fuels the quality of his series. “Every week, we try to explore a slightly different angle of the phenomenon. And obviously, not every case can be something we know or have it clearly be something from another world because we don’t understand it,” he said. “We wanted to be true to the fact that sometimes, incredible accounts would yield a misidentification or an Earthly explanation or a hoax. We try to stay true to that idea, while of course, keeping the mystery going.” Combined with the writing and the quality of the cast, that aspect of the show is what makes it so appealing for McDonough, who grew up staring at star-filled skies during Massachusetts winters near Cape Cod. “For me, life is a mystery and that’s the great part about it. Nothing is black and white. There is so much stuff out

there that we can’t fathom as human beings. I love that aspect of life and this show really brings that out. It’s not by luck that Project Blue Book is such a massive hit,” McDonough said with pride. “It’s that people love to watch TV and to think. Here’s all the drugs and bad stuff in the world on television. I don’t want to watch that. What I want to watch is, ‘What else is out there and how can we be better human beings because of it?’ That’s great television. As corny as it sounds, that’s what I want to watch and Neal McDonough gets to be a part of that show.” With the season one finale having aired on March 12 and season two already a go, O’Leary promises more twists and turns for viewers looking to go down this extraterrestrial path. “We pull cases from in and around that [early 1950s] era. We try to be true to what was going on historically at that time,” he explained. “Now we’re moving forward and with a pick up on a season two, that allows us to jump forward a little in time to the mid1950s. What’s cool is that there are some great cases out there that we’d love to do and figure that we’ll do next season. We’re definitely gearing up and we want to keep the momentum going. Grab that bottle and get ready to make a plethora of alien snacks and desserts. UFO alien cupcakes are a must for every alien-themed party, with a green Sour Patch Kid at the center

of the sweet treat, under the roof of a plastic shot cup UFO. Make chocolate cake either from scratch or a boxed mix from the store (for a soft and airy chocolate cake, grab the Duncan Hines dark chocolate fudge cake) and white Pillsbury icing. Divide the icing container into two bowls; color one bowl of icing with green and the other with purple (about five to six drops of coloring should suffice). spherical candies around as UFO lights. Popcorn is the perfect movie food. Alien invasion popcorn can be made two ways for some casual movie chomping. For the first, microwave a bag of salted popcorn, melt a 12-ounce bag of white chocolate chips (use a double boil, so it doesn’t burn in the microwave) and make sure to have a bag of candy eyeballs as well as that trusty green food coloring handy. When the popcorn is done, spread it out on a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet. Mix the green food coloring into the melted chocolate and pour it over the spread popcorn. Toss in some eyes and you have little alien popcorns. For the second alien-style popcorn, just pop some corn and toss in green sour patch kids, chopped space-themed bars like Milky Way or Mars and moon rocks aka Whoppers or Duds. For a quick throw-together snack, whip up a dip of your choice (my preference is French onion) and add a few drops of green food coloring. Put two green plastic spoons in the dip, sticking up so the handles are peeking out, with googly eyes hot-glued to them. Dip any chips of your choosing, but try green veggie chips to stick with the alien theme. If looking for a healthier alien snack option, make a rocket ship out of fruit skewers. Cut a large strawberry in three, so the tip of the strawberry

can act as the nose of the ship. Place a cubed melon of your choice (or marshmallow) in between each strawberry piece, ending with a piece of cantaloupe cut out like the bottom of a rocket ship. If these sound a bit over the top, buy an alien cookie cutter and make some sugar cookies to decorate. Fill a jar of green candy, create a green vegetable or fruit tray, or just serve up some slender chicken finger and fries with a placard that reads alien fingers.

Celestial Cocktail: Alien Extract Ingredients: • 2 oz. coconut rum • 2 oz. melon liquer • 3 oz. pineapple juice • Blue sugar • Cherry Instructions: 1. Rim the edge of the glass with

By J. Allen Hynek No matter how many years pass, the case against UFOs has not been put to rest. In 1972, Dr. J. Allen Hynek, a scientist himself and the only government-paid ufologist in history, published a book that looks at the decisions made by officials in the early days of ufology. He details the naive discussions surrounding UFOs as people were talking about them in the 1950s. Hynek proves that there is a conspiracy afoot to hide the facts, and that there are many cases that still need to be explained by mainstream science—not dismissed with jokes. Citing specific cases, Hynek raises questions that have still not been answered and refutes mainstream arguments that have yet to be proven. Perhaps to further back up his claims, Hynek served as official astronomical consultant to the U.S. Air Force’s Project Blue Book and was an astronomer and Professor of Astronomy at Ohio State University. He was also largely responsible for the founding of MUFON (originally called the Midwest UFO Network)

The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry

By Whitley Strieber Whitey Strieber, an American ufologist and horror author published Communion: A True Story in 1987, a book based on his own experiences. Strieber writes that he experienced “lost time” and terrifying flashbacks, which hypnosis conducted by Budd Hopkins later links to an alleged encounter with aliens. The book was later made into a movie in 1989 called Communion, directed by Philippe Mora and starring Christopher Walken as Strieber and Lindsay Crouse as his wife, Anne. Strieber compares the “familiar” being he sees, whom he describes as female, to the Sumerian goddess Ishtar. This abduction/ UFO story is worth a read if you’re interested in learning how different people describe their encounters with other beings.

By Brad Steiger Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, while publicly dismissing the existence of UFOs, the United States Air Force was engaged in a secret program for evaluating every report of unidentified flying objects. Under the code name “Project Blue Book,” the Air Force analyzed more than 13,000 incidents. The goal of this enterprise was to determine the cause for each UFO sighting, to assess the security threat for each incident and to determine how the United States could obtain or create the technology used by UFOs. Project Blue Book (1976) is based on secret files obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, includes accounts of seven of the most important USAF inquiries—among them the story of the night the White House was buzzed by UFOs, the mystery of the Lubbock Lights, the startling conversion of the prominent astronomer, J. Alan Hynek, from UFO skeptic to believer and much more. Unfortunately, Steiger passed away just last year, but his work on UFOs still reigns supreme. Did the government cover anything up? Are we really alone or is there another group of beings out there? Uncover the government documents and testimonials reported by people all over the country who have claimed to witness UFOS.

By John Fuller Originally published in 1966, this riveting account of a couple’s abduction is well known in UFO literature and lore. The story, told expertly by journalist John G. Fuller, has also become fodder for TV movies such as The UFO Incident (1975) and fictionalized hour-long dramas such as Dark Skies (1996-1997). The Interrupted Journey recounts (in meticulous detail) the events of the evening of Sept. 19, 1961, a span when an unassuming interracial couple, Barney and Betty Hill, saw their weekend drive in New England interrupted by a flying saucer. The Hills alleged that aliens took them aboard their craft and a slew of medical exams were conducted before the couple’s release. Fuller recounts the aftermath, when the Hills returned to their home and their jobs and everyday life but felt mysteriously unsettled with significant gaps in their memories. Slowly and surely, the couple began to come to terms with the bizarre, inexplicable events of that night. This is a great collectible to add to your UFO bookshelf.

Going To An Ancient Land With Celtic Woman

n these modern-day times, the spreading of Irish culture is in good hands whenever Celtic Woman takes the stage. It’s been that way ever since the all-female musical ensemble was founded by David Kavanagh, Sharon Browne and David Downes back in 2004. With Downes coming off being the former musical director of Riverdance, on-stage spectacle has always been at a premium, but never at the expense of the music. In the time that the quartet (which was originally founded as a quintet) has been regaling audiences around the world, millions of albums have been sold and they’ve become a staple of PBS’ annual fundraising drives. For 2019, the Gaels have returned with Ancient Land, a brandnew album that puts a contemporary spin on the centuries-old Irish tradition of telling stories through song, be they about love, dancing or of the land itself. For vocalist Máiréad (pronounced like parade) Carlin, the new album reflects the love the Derry-born vocalist and her bandmates feel for the Emerald Isle. “We really wanted to delve deep into the treasure trove of Irish music that’s out there. Also, a lot of our fans have been asking us for quite a while to release new music. With this record, I’d say that this is the most original music we’ve had on an album in quite a long time. Certainly since our Grammy-nominated album Destiny,” she explained. “It’s really exciting for

Celtic Woman on the set of the current Ancient Land tour us. We really love getting out there and performing these songs. I would say Ancient Land has a really earthy vibe and it was just an absolute pleasure to record and a real organic experience for

all of us.” The current project found Carlin, Éabha McMahon, Tara McNeill and Megan Walsh decamping to Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios for a two-week recording stint. Living together, sharing meals and immersing themselves in Celtic and world music, the foursome emerged with a mix of originals (“Follow Still,” “Be Still,” the instrumental “Love & Honour”), Irish traditional songs (“Sive,” “Mná no hÉireann [Women of Ireland],” “Moorlough Song”) and reimagined reworkings of contemporary songs (Mary Fahl’s “Going Home” and The

High Kings’ “Homeland”). One song that really resonated for Carlin was Elvis Costello’s “Long Journey Home.” “I’m certainly a massive Elvis Costello fan and he actually recorded that initially with an Irish group called Anùna, who are incredible. So there was that Irish connection there, obviously, given the meaning of the song—‘the red, white and blue/Green, white and gold.’ There was that real connection with American and Irish history linked in there. So we really felt it would be appropriate to put it in the show,” she said. “It’s actually a very poignant moment in the show. And whenever I do sing that song, I almost feel like we’re looking back at our ancestors and have some kind of connection with them.” A point of pride for Celtic Woman are the shows they put on. While it would be easy to dismiss the Vegaslike spectacle as being more sizzle than steak, Carlin is proud of the intimate connection her group makes with their fans along with the spiritual trip all involved get to go on. “I would say that it’s certainly an epic stage production and it’s a very unique experience. I don’ think there’s anything out there quite like it. It’s not just about the lights, set and dresses, which we of course have. We really put on such a massive show—it’s bagpipers, dancers, drummers,” she said. “There are moments where we take the audience to a real high and then we bring them back down again with songs like ‘Danny Boy.’ We would always say that this particular show is very much a journey. And also paying homage to our heritage and our

tradition. This show is called Ancient Land, so it kind of does what it intends. There are a lot of historic songs in there and while there are some songs in this turn that we did perform last year, we also do brand-new songs that people wouldn’t have heard. We never tour the same more than once because why would anybody come back if we didn’t do that? It’s really important to us that we move along and bring new material to people so they feel like they’re seeing it for the first time.” Purists may turn their noses up at what Celtic Woman is doing in terms of putting a modern spin on the old, but Carlin and the rest of the group are rightly proud of what they’ve created and the bond they have with their followers. “Celtic Woman is a nudge to the past and a big nudge to the future. We really relish our Irish history. We’re just four ordinary women bringing these Irish songs and contemporary songs to the world in a new way,” she said. “Audiences are just so important to us. We say they’re the fifth member of Celtic Woman and you feel their energy when you’re on the stage. How they are with us is just as important as how we are with them. It’s very much a collaboration. Some people don’t really think about it like that. Now, Roddini is looking to bring his program into schools as a unique field trip for students. “I’m a mobile company so I can bring on-campus field trips to partnered schools,” said Roddini of Bounce Boot Camp. “I set up in the gym for the day and I stay until the last bell rings so that every class that has gym that day, comes through and gets to participate in the program for those 45 minutes.” Roddini, who loves sports and coaching, came up with the idea for Fitness for a Foundation in October.

While the concept is new, the goal is something that all schools will be able to get on board with. Fitness for a Foundation is an initiative that is partly sponsored by the PTA or school board that engages youths of all ages with fitness while collecting money for nonprofit foundations. “For example, if there are 100 kids in the school, and its $5 per student for the field trip, that totals $500. Out of that $500, I take what I need to run my business and any additional proceeds go towards a foundation of the school’s choice,” said Roddini of the program. “It’s not just a gym class, it goes back to the school and it’s, in my opinion, a win-win. There are so many school districts on Long Island and that’s not the case everywhere else in the country so I think the area could benefit greatly.” In the past, Roddini has sponsored Levittown’s General Douglas MacArthur High School’s Lax for

Autism event, donating all of his proceeds back to the program. Roddini says he hopes that by giving back to programs that support a variety of causes that kids will realize it’s not all about them. “I recently finished my first eightweek program at a school in Locust Valley. A parent came up to me—her son wasn’t big into sports—and every week he asked his mom if it was Tuesday because that’s when I came with the program,” said Roddini, noting that kids earn different dog tags while participating in the program, a small but fun initiative to get them excited about exercise. “Everyone gets a Bounce Boot Camp dog tag at the beginning, then after the eight weeks, they receive another dog tag and can pick their own color.”

Fatty Liver Disease The accumulation of fat in the liver is the most common liver disease in the United States. While it is benign in the vast majority of affected persons, this condition can lead to advanced liver disease, cirrhosis and liver cancer. Fatty liver is the second most common indication for liver transplantation and the most common cause of cirrhosis in people younger than 50 years. Fatty liver is associated with diabetes and obesity, but thin individuals are also affected. There are no FDAapproved therapies for fatty liver disease, and treatment centers around behavioral modification. Diet, exercise and weight loss have been shown to reverse fatty liver disease, even in advanced cases. Vitamin E in non-diabetics and an oral hypoglycemic agent, pioglitazone, have been shown to have a modest benefit in this condition but there is not enough data to

recommend their use in all patients. As this is a common condition with significant morbidity and mortality, there is a tremendous amount of clinical research underway in an attempt to find a medication that will be effective for this condition. Last month, the results of two long awaited clinical trials were released to the public. Selonsertib, a once-daily,

oral inhibitor of apoptosis signal-regulating kinase (ASK1), which showed promise in phase two studies, reported disappointing results in a large phase three trial treating fatty liver patients with cirrhosis. While Selonsertib was well tolerated, it was not effective as it did not meet the study’s primary endpoint of improvement in hepatic fibrosis. This is very disappointing as there was a lot of excitement about this new agent. A second large selonsertib study in fatty liver patients without cirrhosis and a combination study of Selonsertib, Cilofexor and Firsocostat will report their results later this year. Hopefully, the results will be positive. Obeticholic acid (OCA), a farnesoid X receptor (FXR) agonist, reported a positive result on the study’s primary endpoint with a significant improvement in fibrosis noted in non-cirrhotic patients treated with OCA 25mg a day.

The study did not achieve its secondary endpoint of steatosis resolution and in the 25 mg group, approximately half of the patients developed pruritus and 9 percent of those who developed itching prematurely stopped the therapy. These results are highly significant, despite the side effect profile, as this is the first medication used for fatty liver to show fibrosis improvement in a large trial. These results will likely lead to OCA’s approval by the FDA for use in fatty liver cases sometime in 2020. So far, 2019 has given us one positive and one negative

result in two widely anticipated clinical trials. This field is evolving rapidly. The dual PPAR agonist elafibranor has shown positive results in phase two trials and a phase three trial of 1,000 patients is expected to release intermediate results later this year. While there is no magic bullet in fatty liver disease on the horizon and all therapies will need to be used in concert with diet and exercise, significant progress is being made. It is likely that future therapeutic regimens will be a combination of new drugs with different mechanisms of action.

There are two main types of sugars in the diet—naturally occurring sugars and added sugars. Naturally occurring sugars are found naturally in foods like fruit or milk. Added sugars are sugars and syrups that are put into foods and beverages when they are being processed or prepared. Added sugars provide zero nutritional value, and unfortunately, boost the caloric content of foods. Empty calories in added sugars can lead to unnecessary weight gain and poor glycemic control. The American Heart Association provides daily added sugar limits for men and women. Specifically, women are advised to consume no more than 6 teaspoons or 25 grams of added sugar per day; men

Medicare Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) Coverage When will Medicare cover a stay in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)? There are specific rules as to when, how much and how long Medicare will cover a stay in a Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF). After having a hip replacement or knee replacement, many people stay in a SNF to receive physical therapy. Skilled care in a SNF is generally for a short period of time and is not custodial care or long term care. Included in the rules for Medicare to cover a stay in a SNF: • You must have Medicare Part A and “days remaining” in the benefit period • You have an inpatient hospital stay of 3 days or more. Starting with the day you were admitted to the hospital as an inpatient and does NOT include the day discharged from the hospital. • Must enter the SNF shortly after leaving the hospital. In general, a stay in a SNF must begin within 30 days of being discharged from the hospital. • Your doctor has prescribed inpatient services provided by a SNF (ex. Physical Therapy). Original Medicare covers all or part of the cost for up to 100 days in a SNF. The following chart details Medicare’s 2019 coverage and your responsibility in a SNF.

Northwell Health Sponsors NY Lustgarten Walks

he Northwell Health Cancer Institute announced today that it will serve as the presenting sponsor for the five Lustgarten Pancreatic Cancer Research Walks in the New York metropolitan area. Northwell will team with the Lustgarten Foundation in supporting community walks to increase awareness of the disease and promote innovative research. The shared goal is to cure pancreatic cancer, which has a five-year survival rate of only 9 percent. More than 56,000 people will be diagnosed this year nationally and almost 46,000 will people will die from it. The Lustgarten Walks offer patients, survivors and loved ones a day of hope, where everyone in the community can come together in the shared goal of raising awareness and funding for this incredibly challenging disease. The family-friendly walks, which include food, raffles and prizes from vendors, offer a sense of community to those who are battling this disease and a support system for survivors. “With such low survival rates, there’s a tremendous need to collaborate with experts in this oncology specialty,” said Richard Barakat, M.D., physician-in-chief and director of the Northwell Health Cancer Institute, and senior vice president of the health system’s Cancer Service Line. “We can only move toward a cure for pancreatic cancer with increased public awareness and collaboration on innovate research aimed at advancing more clinical trials for patients.” Northwell will sponsor the following

Participants Sought For Long Island Breast Cancer Walk Members of the Adelphi team of the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program are out walking every weekend, training for the annual LI2Day Walk. The team goes to local parks, such as Eisenhower Park, and malls to get in shape for the fundraising walk that will be held on Saturday, June 8. This is the 15th year of the event, and Adelphi has been a participant and beneficiary every year, to date having received a total of $439,950 in grant funds. The monies are used to support the numerous free services that the Adelphi program offers such as the hotline, support groups, informational seminars and community education. arch is National Nutrition Month and after the havoc that the holiday season can wreak on your diet, there’s no better time in the year to get your body back on track than early spring. One of the best places to treat your body right is at Lo-Cal Kitchen in Greenvale. Owner Jeffrey Feinstein says that he wants to change the way we interact with our health by helping his customers pay more attention to what they put in their bodies, through a philosophy called “calorie consciousness.”

What do you mean by calorie consciousness? How do you find it helps your customers make the best decisions and stay on track? To us, calorie consciousness is both about the number of calories as well as the quality of calories. The “calorie” and the focus on it as a means of maintaining a healthy weight has been demonized of late, but we feel it’s important to have an awareness of how many calories things contain. It’s been my experience that people grossly underestimate calorie counts. The number of calories alone is not sufficient, however, as people can eat less calories and still not be healthy. That’s where the quality of the calorie comes into play. We utilize low calorie cooking techniques, using lean meats, lots of vegetables and whole grains, together with a focus on reduction of added sugars and refined carbohydrates to achieve our “calorie conscious” food. In doing so we make it easy for our customers to

choose healthy meals that suit their tastes.

What do you think are the biggest barriers to eating well? Taste, lack of results and availability. I think when people think healthy food they think bland and tasteless. It doesn’t have to be that way. Depending on your current diet, you might have to make some minimal sacrifices, but we’ve created a menu that makes them very easy to swallow. There is so much information out there on what to eat or not eat and so many different fad diets it’s hard to count them all. People tend to grab onto an idea they read about and run with it. Often it doesn’t work for them, or it works for a time and then they find themselves back where they started or worse. There are no magic pills to achieve lasting results; you need to decide that you are going to make a life long change to eat better. It’s difficult to find quality healthy food that tastes good. People are often faced with a plethora of less

healthy choices or unhealthy foods masquerading as healthy foods—being prepared for these situations and having the knowledge of what the better choices are can greatly help in this area.

We’ve taken all the thought out of it—not knowing what the healthiest choices on a menu are can make it difficult to make a good choice. At Lo-Cal Kitchen, there are no bad choices.

How do you try to make healthy eating easier?

What’s the one dish you recommend people try at Lo-Cal Kitchen? We do so many great dishes, but I think some of our most creative dishes are the ones I like to highlight. They would include the Cheatza. It’s like a pizza, but we use ground chicken as the crust instead of a wheat dough. We also do some great burgers, which are cooked to order and feature 90 percent lean ground beef, 90 percent lean ground bison and 99 percent lean ground turkey. One of the favorites is the Fiery Pickle, which is a ground turkey burger topped with mozzarella cheese, pickled onions and light chipotle mayo.

he topic of aliens is so fascinating that the genre has taken over every form of media from books, blogs and video games to inspiring food, television shows and movies. But it is the last source of aforementioned entertainment that really gets inside people’s minds. Check out our list of films that feature extraterrestrial life, and get ready to space out for a few hours.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind Steven Spielberg’s 1977 classic where Indiana power company worker Roy Neary (played by Richard Dreyfuss) has his life turned upside down after an encounter with a UFO while out on a late night outage call. The final scenes offer up a special effects extravaganza culminating with a “mother ship” landing, aliens and a cameo by famed ufologist Dr. J. Allen Hynek himself, whose terminology for an alien encounter inspired Spielberg’s title.

Earth vs. The Flying Saucers This 1956 black and white classic hit the big screen as the country began to embrace the flying saucer phenomenon. The film stars veteran character actor Hugh Marlowe as Dr. Russell Marvin, who encounters a UFO while driving to work with his wife one morning. Confrontations ensue, and the good doctor solves Earth’s problems by devising a sonic weapon to defeat the worldwide alien invasion. The real star of the film is the stop-motion special effects by the iconic Ray Harryhausen.

Fire In The Sky

This 1993 biopic is based on Travis Walton’s book The Walton Experience depicting his alleged alien abduction in 1975. Heading home from work one night with his coworkers, they encounter a UFO and Walton (played by D.B. Sweeney) decides to take a closer look. He is struck by a beam of light from the craft and knocked off his feet and his friends flee, fearing for their safety. Subsequent investigation shows no sign of Walton, who turns up five days later disoriented and is hospitalized. Walton’s flashbacks portray a terrifying abduction by aliens who performed excruciating experiments on him. In the end, many considered this a hoax, yet Walton maintains this encounter to have occurred.

skies, and even a chilling camcorder video of an alien walking near a children’s birthday party in Brazil—the world is under attack. The invasion finds Hess and his family huddled in their basement as the aliens crawl around above them. After a frightening encounter with a creature once they go back upstairs, the news is that the invasion has been aborted. You’ll have to watch the movie to find out why.

The Day The Earth Stood Still This 1951 classic stars Michael Rennie as alien visitor Klaatu who lands his flying saucer in a Washington, D.C. park. As he emerges to

announce he’s come in peace, he’s quickly shot and wounded by the surrounding army and taken to nearby Walter Reed hospital where he manages his escape. Taking residence at a nearby boarding house, he’s befriended by young Bobby who helps him find “the greatest living person” in the form of scientist Dr. Barnhardt, who’s asked by Klaatu to deliver his dire message to the proper authorities—Earth’s misuse of atomic power could lead to “Earth being eliminated”. Requesting a harmless display of power from Klaatu to help his mission, it’s arranged in the form of neutralizing all electricity on earth for 30 minutes. Klaatu’s final message as he departs: “Your choice is simple: join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We will be waiting for your answer.”

The Thing (From Another World) A 1951 classic where a U.S. Air Force crew and scientists discover a crashed flying saucer and a humanoid in the Arctic ice near their remote outpost. They bring the frozen body back to camp in a block of ice and a 24-hour

watch is posted. Thanks to an electric blanket draped over it by an airman who was creeped out by the whole thing, thaws the ice, the creature escapes and the search begins. The real creep factor is that you see very little of the large spaceman (played by James Arness of TV’s Gunsmoke fame), but expect him to pop out at every turn. It all comes to an end when the crew draws the humanoid (they discover it’s an advanced form of plant life) into a trap and electrocutes him into a small pile of burnt veggies.

A closer look at the famous 1947 ‘UFO’ crash By aNTHoNy MuRRay

n July of 1947 near Roswell, NM, a rancher by the name of W.W. “Mac” Brazel and his son, Vernon, discovered unidentifiable debris in their sheep pasture while going on a morning drive. The debris that was in Brazel’s desert pasture included metallic sticks that were held together with tape, as

well as chunks of plastic and foil reflectors, and scraps of a heavy, glossy, paper-like material. Unable to identify the mysterious objects, Brazel informed Roswell sheriff George Wilcox, who called officials at the nearby Roswell Army Air Force base. After the call, soldiers searched across Brazel’s field, gathered the mysterious debris and took it away. On July 8, “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer on Ranch in Roswell Region” was the top story in the Roswell Daily Record, with photographic evidence of the unidentifiable objects that crashed. “The intelligence office of the 509th Bombardment Group at Roswell Army Air Field announced at noon today, that the field has come into the possession of a Flying Saucer,” read the article. The next day, an Air Force official clarified the paper’s report, saying that it was no flying saucer that crashed, but instead a weather balloon. Still, even with the Air Force’s clarification, many were left unconvinced and believed that the crashed vehicle was not from this world, but from another and argued that the debris in Brazel’s field came from an alien spaceship. Curiosity grew just years later when the Air Force conducted a series of secret “dummy drops” over air bases, test ranges and unoccupied fields across the state in the ’50s. These experiments, which were

part of a top-secret atomic espionage project at New Mexico’s Alamogordo Air Field? Since World War II, a group of geophysicists and oceanographers had been working on a top-secret atomic espionage project at New Mexico’s Alamogordo Air Field called Project Mogul. The objective of Project Mogul was to eavesdrop on nuclear tests as far away as the Soviet Union. According to the U.S. military, the debris in Brazel’s field did belong to Project Mogul. What Brazel apparently found were the remains of a 700-foot-long

string of neoprene balloons, radar reflectors that were used for tracking and sonic equipment that scientists had launched from the Alamogordo base. Because the project was highly classified, no one at the Roswell Army Air Field even knew it existed and had no idea what to make of the objects Brazel had found. The apparent weather balloon story was the easiest and most plausible explanation the Roswell Army Air Field could come up with and to protect

the scientists’ secret project, no one at Alamogordo could step in and clear up the confusion. Today, many people still believe something extraterrestrial crashed in Roswell. In the mid-’90s, the Pentagon declassified most of its files on Project Mogul and the dummy drops. Numerous books were written about Roswell and all the conspiracy theories attached to the site draws hundreds of thousands of curiosity seekers who visit Roswell and the crash site every year, hoping to find out the “real” truth.

he concept of alien life forms have long been a part of various science fiction novels, TV shows and movies. That’s even more true in the world of gaming. Many blockbuster games immerse you into a galactic world beyond your imagination, giving you a way to interact with and even fight extraterrestrials. Here’s a list of just a few of those games that put you through this otherworldly experience.

Half-Life Known as one of the most influential games of all-time, Half-Life (1998) transcended the way the gaming community looked at first-person shooting games with the ability to explore the world and find hidden areas while following its linear structure. In the game, you play as Dr. Gordon Freeman as you fight back against aliens who are pouring into your research facility from the Xen Dimension. Through battles with strange creatures and puzzle solving, you must find a way into the newly-discovered dimension and stop the force that is keeping the rift alive. Its sequel, Half-Life 2 (2004), is held in even higher regard for its plot, enhanced graphics and the implementation of the gravity gun, which lets the player pick up and movie objects from far away. This time, the

Mass Effect Known for having one of the most compelling stories in video games, the Mass Effect series by BioWare introduced the world to Commander Shepard and the Systems Alliance Navy military in 2007. Set in the Milky Way galaxy, the brigade is made up of various alien species that must fight to stop the Reapers from destroying all advanced organic life. various societies throughout the galaxy to help fight back against this mechanical force. The action role-playing game is unique because of the many paths you can take in terms of the story. You have situations presented to you, and you have to make a choice that will affect how the game plays out later. Conversations also have various dialogue choices where you can set the tone of a scene. With three games in the original series, the choices you make in the first game can be carried over to the second and third game. The plot, mechanics and world of Mass Effect has been praised universally in the gaming industry.

Dead Space The idea of aliens can be scary, and if it scares you too much, this is not the game for you. Dead Space, which initially came out in 2008 by Visceral Games, puts you in the role of ship systems engineer Isaac Clarke. His starship has been taken over by aliens and his crew has been killed and turned into “necromorphs.” The goal of the game is to get out of the situation alive and take out as many of the aliens and necromorphs as possible. Since the game is based on a mining starship, Clarke must use his tools to fight back against the

creatures around him. He must listen to methods provided to him through hologram in order to kill the necromorphs and escape. The visuals of the game and the intensity of the gameplay was met with widespread acclaim throughout the gaming industry, with some even indicating it as potentially the greatest game of all time.

Pikmin The first three games here are a lot darker in theme, so let’s finish this list off on a brighter note. Pikmin has been a favorite among Nintendo fans since the 2001 release of the original game. It has had multiple protagonists during the series, but the main hero from the first two games in Captain Olimar. He is an alien from the planet Hocotate that crashes down on an Earth-like world known as PNF-404. Olimar must direct tiny plant creatures known as Pikmin, to do tasks to retrieve pieces of his ship in order to put it back together and fly back home before he perishes due to the heavy amounts of oxygen, something that’s deadly to his kind. The game is built as an action platformer and puzzle game as you control where the Pikmin go and what they do.
