When buying a home, it’s all about what’s in style

I

Hot House Trends BY JENNIFER FAUCI

n fashion, one day you’re in and the next day you’re out. That’s not so much the case when it comes to the housing market. Traci Clinton has been a real estate agent at Douglas Elliman for the last 15 years and has seen first-hand the importance that her clients emphasize when making a house a home. “Having been born and raised in Manhasset, it gives me great satisfaction to work with and introduce new families to the community I feel so passionate about,” said Clinton, who was recently awarded the top number one agent for sales production for the Douglas Elliman Manhasset office. “Prior to real estate, I owned my own interior design firm, Chelsea Interior, that has allowed me to help my buyers envision their potential new home and what can be done to renovate it if need be.” Although Clinton sells all price points, she is known in the industry for her success in the luxury market and newly constructed homes. A staple in the real estate community, Clinton stays abreast of the current and developing housing trends in the market, sharing the top five design and architectural styles she has been seeing.

TURNKEY

“Many years ago, buyers were willing and looking to do major renovation projects so they could get all of the details in a home that they had always wished for,” said Clinton. “With busy work and life schedules, more buyers in the market are looking for either homes completely renovated within the last few years or brand new construction.” Clinton has found that buyers tend to like the architectural style of a more traditional home, but have been gravitating to a more transitional interior space with a serene color scheme. “Blending traditional design with a nod to more modern clean lines, with an open concept for the living and entertaining spaces, is what buyers are looking for,” she said.

GOURMET KITCHENS

“No matter what price point, the buyers are all about the kitchen as their top priority. They love an open concept having the kitchen open into the family room or den,” said Clinton, adding that buyers are still embracing the white and gray color scheme. “Gold tones in hardware for cabinetry or stone countertops on the island is like a piece of jewelry as it accessorizes the space.”

Images represent properties that were recently sold in Sands Point and Manhasset. Clinton added that as much as buyers love the look of marble, it is not very practical for everyday living, and that quartz countertops are gaining momentum. “In addition to high quality appliances in the kitchen, other extras like warming drawers, Sub-Zero drink drawers, wine coolers, two dishwashers when possible, pot fillers for ease at the stove and other bells and whistles are on their wish lists.”

SMART HOMES

“We have become an on-demand society and it’s no surprise that many would want these conveniences of smart home technology woven into their homes,” said Clinton. Entertainment systems, security cameras, sensors and detectors,

window blinds, indoor and outdoor landscape lighting, heating and cooling systems, appliances, irrigation and so much more can all be voice activated, lending to the appeal of a smart home. “These systems increase the value of the homes, help save energy and improve the safety and security of the property.”

MASTER SUITES

“Home buyers look for a spacious master suite that can serve as a sanctuary and peaceful getaway after a long work day with busy family schedules,” said Clinton, adding that the overwhelming majority of buyers desire separate walk-in custom closets and a spa-like master bath to retreat to.

WASH, DRY, REPEAT

“Laundry rooms are actually getting a style makeover from years ago. Second floor laundry rooms in new construction are usually a must and typically builders will provide a second space in the lower level,” said Clinton. “Buyers want them large enough to be able to fold the laundry with adequate storage space for dirty and clean clothes. It becomes about making the laundry room an extension of the style of their home.” Traci Clinton is a licensed real estate salesperson and fine home specialist for Douglas Elliman Real Estate. VIVA LA CORAL

FEBRUARY 27 - MARCH 5, 2019 • BLVD • GOLD COAST REAL ESTATE & LUXURY LIVING

Design your home with help from Pantone’s new hue BY JENNIFER FAUCI

B

ack in December, the 2019 Pantone Color of the Year was revealed to be Living Coral, a playfully bright and fresh hue that is the perfect complement to spring and summer weather, florals, fashion and that perfect pop of color to accentuate the décor of your home. The Pantone Color Institute is responsible for highlighting top seasonal runway colors, forecasts global color trends, and advises companies on color for product and brand visual marketing. The color collective describes Living Coral as “emitting the desired, familiar, and energizing

aspects of color found in nature. In its glorious, yet unfortunately more elusive, display beneath the sea, this vivifying and effervescent color mesmerizes the eye and mind.” Get inspired by design and liven up your home with these delightfully coral-colored products.

Nilda Comforter Set from VCNY $37.99 Relax in style thanks to this coral confection from Target. This four-piece bed set—available in Queen and King size—includes a comforter, two shams and a decorative pillow.

KitchenAid Artisanal Stand Mixer $375.95 Living Coral has even found its way into gourmet houseware products. Brighten up your kitchen with a playful stand mixer from Williams Sonoma in the color “Bird of Paradise.”

Catt Coral Table Lamp $154.99 Take the color of the year to literal heights with a coral-colored coral table lamp from Joss & Main. Perfect for a tasteful coastal-themed home, beach house or an eccentric accent piece to any living area.

Maquoit End Table With Storage $104.99 Style in a home is key and it’s made even better with the added bonus of storage. Available on Wayfair, this Beachcrest Home designed end table in Desert Coral can be tucked in a corner for use as a side table or can be the focal point of an entryway.

Flamingo Pair Square Throw Pillow $24.49 This fun pillow with adorable chain-stitched flamingos can adorn your family room couch inside or have a place outside on your deck watching the kids jump in the pool. Pick it up at Bed Bath & Beyond.

Alanya Wingback Chair $439.99 Make a statement with this armchair from Birch Lane as you cozy up with a good book.

Flower Ceramic Table Vase $34.99 If your style is more traditional and you want something of centuries past, try this ceramic vase by Privilege International from Hayneedle that looks like it could be from a Mesopotamian empire or European art gallery.

Beaded Placemat in Jute/Coral $9.99 Bring beauty and detail to your dining table with this15-inch diameter beaded motif placemat from Bed Bath & Beyond.

ith spring on the horizon, I am proud to share with you another exciting new product from Anton: blvd. This new luxury publication features the best of Gold Coast real estate, style & fashion, design & décor, dining and so much more, all in one place. You’ll notice the new, larger page size of this publication (we call it a broadsheet), which is suitable for this kind of luxury. With real estate as the main focus of our launch issue, we chat with Realtors from Douglas Elliman and Coach Realtors about trends in the real estate market and what buyers and sellers are looking at when it comes to both the interior and exterior style of a home that best suits their lifestyle. For those looking to downsize, Beechwood Homes highlights why townhouse living may be the right choice for you, as it has become a popular option for empty nesters. And as we all get ready to welcome spring, consider adding this year’s Pantone color, Living Coral, to your décor inside as you become one with nature by getting creative with your backyard landscaping. Need some inspiration? Consider a tour of the Gold Coast’s extravagant and historic mansions from another era. Our blvd. II lifestyles section features high-end skin care products perfect for rehydrating your body from winter’s chill, as well as the best sleeping tips from DUXIANA’s experts on how to achieve a good night’s rest. Restock your closet with the latest looks from St. John and designer Tadashi Shoji, whose fall/winter collection is hot off the runway of New York Fashion Week. You can develop a real appetite while shopping, so it’s a good thing we spotlighted our top picks for restaurants on Long Island that span from Syosset/Jericho in the east and Garden City in the west, all the way up to the North Shore. And if you find yourself in Manhattan, make a reservation at any one of chef, restaurateur and author Lidia Bastianich’s eateries as she shares what she loves about Italian cuisine. At the end of the day, curl up with a good book in your own personalized private library, courtesy of the literary architects at The Strand Bookstore. I hope you enjoy blvd. as much as we have enjoyed creating it, and I wish you a refreshing and blooming spring season. Angela Susan Anton Publisher

TOWNHOUSE BY JENNIFER FAUCI

I

n today’s day and age, there is no longer a stigma when it comes to apartment, condo and townhouse living. Quite the opposite, actually. Michael Dubb is the CEO and founder of Beechwood Homes, a building organization that holds the title of Long Island’s largest homebuilder and developer of sophisticated lifestyle communities. The company, which includes Dubb and his son Steven, who serves as principal, is ranked at the forefront of privately owned residential homebuilders nationwide. But for Dubb, building a home is more than a place for people to live, it’s creating a lifestyle. “It’s my job to acquire sites that I deem suitable for development in these residential communities where people can live and enjoy a terrific lifestyle,” said Dubb of his role. “We started out small with our first community, Spruce Pond in North Hills, in the mid 1980s. There were 69 townhomes on Shelter Rock Road on the corner of the L.I.E. and at that point, condo living was relatively new, but there was a tremendous demand for it.” Dubb noticed that people wanted to leave their houses and move away from the responsibilities of homeownership. Recognizing that this way of life could be the future of housing on Long Island, he focused on the opportunity of gated communities and the security they offer. “It becomes a social event; people make friends, they meet at the pool or play cards, have dinners and parties. It’s the fun and excitement of making friends when you come from a home after your kids are grown up,” said

Dubb, noting that these communities include similar aged people with like-minded interests. The townhouse living population is mainly comprised of the empty nester community, which according to Dubb, begins when people are in their mid to late 40s. “Twenty five percent of the community could be people of all ages and 75 percent is 55 and older,” said Dubb of the residents, who are predominantly empty nesters for the most part. “Often I find when I talk to people, they are making lateral moves into a place that is the equivalent size of what they lived in or slightly smaller, but they are downsizing on the responsibilities of being a homeowner.” Most Beechwood Homes units are designed for single living, but there are models with a master bedroom, living room, kitchen and dining room downstairs while upstairs is additional space for a bed or two and a den for when company comes. All of the properties also have basements for storage or extra space if needed. As for the style of the homes, well-lit rooms with high ceiling heights and large glass windows lend a feeling of spaciousness and airiness. Each unit is customizable to a point where owners can choose from several different hardwood floors, granite countertops and cabinet colors. When it comes to appliances, the properties feature state-of-the-art appliances with Kohler fixtures throughout. Within the Beechwood community, there are several high-end indoor and outdoor amenities offered such as swimming pools and hot tubs, lounges, bars, ballrooms,

LIVING gyms, theaters, outdoor recreation areas, tennis courts and bocce ball courts. So are you ready to move in? Dubb says that there is usually a supply of move-in ready units to occupy homes between one to four months out. If people have to move up their delivery dates or the closing of their prior home, then there is time to schedule new construction accordingly that would be ready in six months to a year. In most cases, Dubb can provide quickly for what fits the needs of the new residents. Current communities have been in operation in Yaphank, Smithtown, Plainview and East Rockaway. A development in Huntington was recently completed and, according to Dubb, East Meadow is the next town to plan for. Although Beechwood Homes is the largest builder and most established in building these types of communities on Long Island, the company has three decades under its tool belt, and that comes with a highly trained staff and loyal contractors who produce nothing but quality. “Our clients know when they deal with us that they are getting a reputable, local builder that has been around for a long time,” said Dubb. “We have created fantastic lifestyles for thousands of people around the island.” For more information on Beechwood Homes and to see current and future properties, call 800-616-5774 or visit beechwoodhomes.com.

WHAT’S HOT

To Market, To Market

The trends of real estate are changing with the times BY JENNIFER FAUCI

A

home, as it comes to be, reflects the lifestyle of those living in it. So it only makes sense that both buyers and sellers become well versed in the home buying process from the very beginning. Having been in real estate since 1993, Stephanie Cullum has seen many different markets. The associate broker and manager at Coach Realtors notes that the current market is particularly interesting because today’s real estate audience is among the most informed of sellers and buyers. “The Internet as an information highway has educated sellers and buyers to understand the basic home values and trends in their particular market area,” said Cullum, who sees this as a positive thing for realtors as buyers and sellers want to work with the best Stephanie professionals in their area who Cullum can help them translate this information. “More informed sellers and buyers certainly raises the bar for our industry.” Similar to any professional search, statistics show that the greatest percentage of sellers and buyers ask their associates/friends for a referral as to who represented them in their real estate transaction and were they satisfied with their service. Cullum states that clients also know the market they want to be in as they have done their homework and know what their expectations are. “Garden City, for example, is a desirable market to be in as are various towns in Nassau County. Buyers have a knowledge of the area they are going into and it is all about location, location, location, but also import-

ant is the condition and market value,” said Cullum, noting that a great school district, convenient shopping, a desirable dining scene, active community life and commute to work are some of the factors people consider when purchasing a home. As far as interest rates go, Cullum says they have stabilized, but rents have risen dramatically in most urban areas, causing buyers to look at all of their options more carefully. While there are some who prefer the traditional Georgian style brick home and all of the classic architectural and interior design that comes with that era, younger homebuyers prefer the contemporary and modern tastes of today. “Many buyers are two-income households and a property that has been updated is often the most important condition because they don’t have the time to renovate,” she said of homeowners who no longer place putting their own stamp on a home at the top of their wish list. “Buyers are looking less for the traditional colonial and want a floor plan that they can work with and create spaces more conducive to today’s less formal life style.” It is the responsibility of a professional Realtor to help both buyer and seller fulfill their living plan. Although times have changed and more people are looking to build their relationships and careers before buying a home, Cullum believes that is still an important goal. “Lifestyle today is very different than it was years ago,” she said. “But I still believe the dream of most Americans is to own their own home.”

To Sleep, Perchance To Dream With relaxation as the ultimate goal, DUXIANA offers Old World quality combined with New World features

W

BY JENNIFER FAUCI

e as humans spend roughly one-third of our lifetime sleeping. That is a big chunk of time dedicated to dreaming and getting a good night’s rest. But how crucial is it to achieve those perfect eight hours? Joan LaPallo is the Manhasset store manager at DUXIANA, a luxury sleep store specializing in the utmost high quality beds and mattresses. She believes that the benefits of sleep extend far beyond waking up feeling refreshed. “When customers come in, we give them a personal experience and discuss with them their personal sleeping problems and why they are shopping for a new mattress. Everyone has different needs,” said LaPallo. “We are becoming increasingly busy as a society, which leads to consumers making online purchases—sight unseen— hoping for the best outcome. E-commerce is time-saving and convenient for many purchases, but not very well-suited for mattress shopping.” That being said, LaPallo notes that a mattress is the most important piece of furniture we own. Firm feeling does not always mean firm support, and with more than 25 years of supporting Long Island communities, DUXIANA has become an expert brand on attaining deep sleep. “The ultimate goal of sleep is for our bodies to repair, rebuild and restore, which is what a mattress should do. If you’re not comfortable, you’re not achieving deep sleep,” said LaPallo of the level of sleep where one’s body and brain waves slow down. “You want a bed to yield to your body, which promotes a level of deep sleep and rejuvenation. A mattress is the most important piece of furniture we own and we disregard that.” When shopping for a new mattress, LaPallo recommends that customers come with a partner or friend, allowing for the full experience of finding the correct angles and postures. That way, the person who is standing gets an optimal view of the person lying on the bed, making sure the feet are uplifted.

The DUX Bed DUXIANA features five models in its line of beds. The DUX Bed—a result of more than 90 years of research—asserts that while each model is unique, all maintain a continuous coil spring system, comprised of one mile of Swedish steel. “This continuous coil wire is very strong and unique to DUX. In Sweden, DUX beds are passed

down from generation to generation, save for replacing the top pads,” said LaPallo, adding that the added resiliency of the coil design eliminates the need for flipping a mattress. “One model has lumbar support, which is great for back sleepers. Another model called the Axion, is a remote-controlled adjustable bed, perfect for pregnant women as it changes the levels of firmness.”

Besides the DUX Bed, DUXIANA sells some of the finest bed linens and quality down products, such as the Xleep pillow, which mimics the bed with its inner core of gentle springs surrounded by down. So live your own version of The Princess and the Pea with the mattress of your dreams. DUXIANA is located at 1522 Northern Blvd., Manhasset. A TASTE OF

ITALY idia Bastianich has solidified herself as the grandmother of Italian cuisine. The Italian born American celebrity chef, author, restaurateur and television personality loves nothing more than spending time with her family, but she is always hard at work, stretching her culinary talent and kind heart as far as she can. “I love the feeling of the table and the family being there and the kids running around,” said Bastianich of any family gathering. “Traditions and food really gives you a strong identity of who you are, identity of a clan of security, you’re part of something.” Bastianich’s two children are both very involved with their mother’s work. It’s a real family business with daughter Tanya Bastianich Manuali helping with cookbooks and son Joe Bastianich opening restaurants. “I’m blessed that my children are in the business so they can grow it and do what they want,” said Bastianich of her legacy. “My love is writing and traveling with my friends and grandkids, who as they get older get more serious about helping in the kitchen.” Perhaps one of Bastianich’s biggest empires— and partnerships—yet, is the wildly successful Eataly. The 50,000-square-foot marketplace is a miniature Italy in Manhattan, offering everything from fresh ingredients, Italian housewares, cooking lessons and the option to dine on everything from meats and cheeses and pizza to fresh pasta and steak at several restaurants. “Eataly is growing and it’s a lot of fun,” said Bastianich of the venture, which has dozens of locations around the world, including Las Vegas, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Japan, Brazil, Munich, Istanbul, Stockholm and of course, Italy. If you haven’t had the pleasure of entering this Italian paradise, come close with Bastianich’s latest cookbooks, Lidia’s

Celebrate Like an Italian: 220 Foolproof Recipes That Make Every Meal a Party (2017) and Lidia’s Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine (2015). The former is Bastianich’s 11th cookbook and is the perfect guide for any gathering from a dinner for two to an entire wedding that gives insight into what any chef needs to know about Italian food. Both are co-authored with her daughter, Tanya Bastianich Manuali. “Lidia’s Mastering the Art of Italian Cuisine is a more comfortable approach to cooking: experiences, techniques, how to buy vegetables and supplement recipes. I’m very proud of it,” said Bastianich, adding that there aren’t any photographs because she wanted it to be reference book for generations and didn’t want it to be dated. The chef has apparently mastered Italian cuisine to the point where she has cooked for not one, but two popes. Bastianich was asked to cook for her first papal visit from Pope Benedict XVI and was truly honored. She was once again requested to cook meals for Pope Francis on his visit to New York in September 2015.

meat, a rib roast, and his confidant said that he wanted to stay light and watch his diet, which was OK with me.” Pope Francis is Italian as well, so Bastianich prepared a delicious menu comprised of vegetable soup, striped bass roasted with parsley, olive oil and lemon, Maine lobster with heirloom tomatoes and burrata, the chef’s signature cacio e pere (pear and pecorino-filled ravioli) and risotto con porcini e tartufi (risotto with porcini, summer truffles and Grana Padano Riserva cheese). “He loves squash so my mother, who is 98, brought things from our garden for him. It was extraordinary,” said Bastianich. For more on what Lidia Bastianich is up to, visit lidiasitaly.com. To add her cookbooks to your collection, find them on Amazon.

“Cooking for a Pope is really something. It’s not what you expect as part of the curriculum of being a chef, but I was blessed,” said Bastianich. “When they first asked me, I said sure, and I was excited, but I didn’t think it was going to happen.” With the help of Angelo Vivolo of Vivolo Restaurant Group, his son, Frank, and Bastianich’s two children, Joe and Tanya, the chef prepared a simple, yet exquisite menu, consisting of two breakfasts, one lunch and two dinners. “The Pope stays in the nuncio’s house when he travels, so we cooked in that same setting. It was an extraordinary dinner; you go to the house and you live with the Pope,” said Bastianich of his holiness, who came into the kitchen and blessed Bastianich and her crew. “I thought since he was Argentinian, I would make a nice big piece of

Attention to detail outside the home is just as important as what goes inside n the world of high-end properties, what surrounds the house should be an extension of the richness inside the home. That luxury is defined by the amenities brought into the landscape, the scale and scope of those elements, and the minute details that make it all special.

In today’s luxury landscapes, homeowners are looking to take the features they have seen while on vacation at resorts and bring them into their own backyard. Not only are they looking for a swimming pool, they are looking for one with an in-pool sun deck, an infinity edge and a built-in spa. Instead of a wide-open lawn for play, they are looking for sport specific play areas such as game courts, bocce courts, and putting greens complete with sand traps and rough. A simple barbecue grill is replaced with a complete outdoor kitchen offering all the amenities of an indoor kitchen, along with some additions such as pizza ovens, and ceramic egg grills. Many landscape luxuries are designed to provide the homeowner with convenience. Radiant heated pavements provide snow-free driveways and walks in the winter months. Refrigerators and icemakers in the outdoor

kitchen mean not having to go inside to freshen a drink on a hot summer day. Outdoor lighting throughout the landscape can allow the festivities to continue into the night unimpeded. Do you think Jay Gatsby would have let the party be called on account of darkness? And of course, as with any extravagance, the devil is in the detail. Selections of rich materials such as natural stone and exotic hardwoods not only provide attractive solutions, they are also durable and offer a timeless look. Paving patterns, material combinations, border treatments, and other details can be the difference between an ordinary patio and an elegant entertaining space. The scale of these landscape features needs to be spacious enough to accommodate large gatherings without seeming overcrowded, while still feeling cozy. This can be achieved by separating

LUXURIOUS LANDSCAPES large spaces into individual ‘garden rooms’ that make the space more intimate. When it comes to plantings, luxury can mean installing larger plants that provide the instant gratification of a full-grown landscape. Mature plant material is more expensive to purchase because of the many years a grower has to care for the plant in their nursery, and they cost more to plant due to the machinery and manpower needed to move them. In some cases, luxury plantings can be the opposite of convenience- i.e. high maintenance perennial gardens or extensive annual plantings that require a full-time gardener or a team of them for installing and

maintaining the plants. Bringing all these elements together in a cohesive manner is the difference between a well-designed landscape and a disjointed batch of stuff in the yard. This is where the skills of a professional landscape designer or architect come into play. Not only do designers have to fit all these amenities, they need to make

sure they function well and look great together. Design professionals also need to be well versed in the local codes and know what is allowable in a particular village or town, as many municipalities have restrictions on setbacks from property lines and limits on percentage of lot occupied by development. So, be sure to do your

homework before starting your homework. Your luxurious garden and backyard oasis awaits. Ken Muellers is the senior landscape designer for Hicks Nurseries. The landscape department recently won a 2019 gold award for design from the Long Island Nursery and Landscape Association.

adashi Shoji debuted its Fall/Winter 2019 Collection at New York Fashion Week on Feb. 7, with a colorful palette and nod to Old World elegance. The designer sought inspiration closer to home, inspired by Southeast Asia’s culture, rich ornamentation and striking architecture. “I’m Japanese and live half of the year in Shanghai; that’s where my studio is,” said Shoji. “When I’m in Southeast Asia, I travel to Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and Cambodia and Indonesia. I love that culture, the history and the food.” Shoji’s fall/winter collection totaled 37 designs that

graced the runway. From pleated-tulle tiers, pronounced seams, neutral and jewel-toned gowns and exquisite drapery, the designer focused on accenting his garments with velvet and sequins. “I love velvet, sequins and clothes that show a gradation of color,” he said. “I also drew from monks’ clothing and the traditional layering and draping of their robes when designing.” For Shoji, his true love lies in making clothes, as he and his team spend a great deal of time making prints from fabric, carefully selecting different embroideries. “Sketching and making the fabric is easy; the hard part is the theme,” he said. “The art of making clothes is more exciting to me.”

Curating A Collection Create your own library with the help of a famed bookstore BY JENNIFER FAUCI

I

magine, thousands of books at your fingertips, all in the confines of a bookstore that has been making literature lovers’ hearts aflutter for the past 92 years. The Strand is an independent bookstore that boasts more than 18 miles of books from first editions and signed editions to unique binds and current fiction and memoirs. And now, you can have your own literary oasis right at home, courtesy of The Strand.

“It’s so easy to collect books,” said Nancy Bass Wyden, who now owns the store after her father and former co-owner, Fred Bass, passed away last January. It was Wyden’s grandfather Benjamin Bass who founded the business back in 1927. Wyden attended the University of Wisconsin for business and literature and her favorite authors include Oscar Wilde, Mark Twain and Charles Dickens. Having been brought up in such a literary environment, Wyden saw the need to help customers create their own private libraries, which is why she started Books by the Foot in 1986, a department within the bookstore that creates custom collections of books for personal libraries, commercial spaces and for film and television. “Books are truly beautiful. We’re in New York City, the cultural center of the world and there are so many writers and readers here so there’s great things that come from private collections and estates,” said Wyden of the store’s stock. “For me, it’s the best job ever. I can be very thoughtful and creative and use my talents to find books that people don’t think ever existed. It’s fun to have this element and it really elevates the house and the spirit; it makes the home warm.” Sky Friedlander is the manager of Books by the Foot and has designed many libraries for hotels such as The Library Hotel, The Rittenhouse Hotel and the Four Seasons, and for private and personal collections of some of the wealthiest people in New York City. “Books by the Foot has really blown up. Every major designer in New York comes to us,” noted Friedlander. “We try to surprise people and give them something special. We’re a new and used bookstore, so we can get specific with collections.” Of the designer libraries, Friedlander says books can be by color, subject, theme, a time period or anything the

client chooses. Since the inception of Books by the Foot, she has had requests for libraries on seashells, jewels and westerns, as well as animals, music and a full-scale Art Deco collection in a high-end New York apartment featuring F. Scott Fitzgerald books. “Someone wanted an ombre wall of books to mimic a painting they had. It was visually beautiful,” she said. “Sometimes it’s subject specific and sometimes it’s for a visual effect, but either way, books are pieces of art.” The Strand turns around the designer libraries fairly quickly. The biggest library Friedlander has done featured more than 2,000 art books, while Wyden has had a request for a replica of Thomas Jefferson’s Monticello Library. As for the price, that depends on the space and style of books. A cart is 15 feet of books, and they are priced by subject. Art books are $300 per foot whereas antique books and leather-bound books are $500 per foot. In Wyden’s experience, employees almost always recommend books that go in a client’s library. If it’s for an individual, Wyden surveys her customer for information to make it truly personal. “We’ll ask a customer what their favorite books are, if they like animals or cars, what kind of art is on their walls and if they’re located in a different city,” she said. “After 90 years, we have a good reputation; we know what we’re doing.” The Strand is always on the lookout for books and will buy straight from the publisher and discount them as well as visit estate sales for more vintage finds. “We get hundreds of books every day and we always have something beautiful,” said Friedlander, adding that it’s all about the surprise. “I hope The Strand gives people a sense of wonder. Just walk through the shelves and you’ll find something incredible.” Despite the nuances of the technological age that has ushered in eBooks, Kindles and Nooks, print publications have maintained a steady fan base of traditionalists. “Time stands still when you walk through the door,” said Wyden. “People feel like it’s their happy place, a little bit of a sanctuary, a community and a place of discovery where you don’t exactly know what you’re going to find.” The Strand Bookstore is located at 828 Broadway at 12th St., in Manhattan. For more information on cultivating your own library, visit strandbooks.com.
