PAL: New Board Of Directors, Clubhouse Renovations

fter vandals destroyed the Port Washington Police Athletic League’s (PAL) clubhouse leaving swastikas spray-painted throughout the building last October, community members rallied around the nonprofit sports organization, raising $25,621 to help renovate the building. Last month, the PAL inducted a new board of directors and using the money from the GoFundMe page they have set to work on making plans to enhance the property.

Town Board Hears Application For School Bus Storage

public hearing was held during the most recent Town of North Hempstead board meeting to consider the application of Huntington Coach Corp. for an exemption from zoning requirements related to the outdoor storage of Manhasset’s school buses at 13, 15 and 21 Harbor Park Dr., in Port Washington.

In 2005-06, Manhasset’s school buses were initially stored on their campus, but as the school community grew larger the town permitted the school district to house their buses at North Hempstead Beach Park.

Several years ago the town found out that storing the buses at the beach was actually considered alienation of parkland, so the district was forced to relocate. Huntington Coach has ultimately been storing the buses at these three locations, but requires an exemption from zoning requirements in order to continue parking them in the area, which is not a permitted use in the Planned Industrial Park (PIP) District.

Town councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte asked Michael Sahn, a Uniondale-based attorney representing Huntington Coach Corp. if the bus company has looked at other locations in the area that don’t require a zoning exemption.

“Yes, our client has looked over the years,” Sahn said. “But because of the need to be in proximity to the school district and [the fact that] there is very little property that fits the need in terms of having enough space to park the buses—this has been the ideal location.”

Rosemary Johnson, the deputy superintendent of the Manhasset school district spoke before the board in support of the application.

The town ultimately decided to continue the public hearing until their next meeting.

“I represent part of Manhasset and councilwoman Lurvey represents part of Manhasset, we know how important this is to the Manhasset School District,” Dalimonte said. “I’m going to continue this public hearing until February, while we look into a few things.”

The Town of North Hempstead will hold their next meeting on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m. via livestream.

PAL: New Board Of Directors, Clubhouse Renovations

fter vandals destroyed the Port Washington Police Athletic League’s (PAL) clubhouse leaving swastikas spray-painted throughout the building last October, community members rallied around the nonprofit sports organization, raising $25,621 to help renovate the building. Last month, the PAL inducted a new board of directors and using the money from the GoFundMe page they have set to work on making plans to enhance the property.

“I think that the Port Washington residents should know that the money is being put to good use,” Stuart Lieblein President of the PAL said.

“We took the GoFundMe money and specifically used that to paint over the swastikas and remediate the property.

There were some homeless people sleeping in our dugouts and on our softball fields. We spent some of the money to shore up the dugouts and we had locked gates installed so that’s no longer an issue. We’re working on [installing] security cameras and alarms for the clubhouse, and all of that’s been what the GoFundMe money was designed to do.”

With private funding from several benefactors and contributors including Peter Dejana and Richard Lesperance, the PAL has also been able to make several improvements to the clubhouse and the fields.

“The other thing we’re doing with private money is we’re fixing up the clubhouse,” Lieblein said. “We’re redoing the bathrooms, fixing up sheetrock, making the fireplace workable, putting

The PAL is also increasing the number of teams they are hosting this year, such as the Long Island Lacrosse Club, and has expanded the sports programs for both adults and children.

“We have our softball programs as usual, but we are adding men’s summer league basketball,” Lieblein said.

“We also just signed a contract with a camp called FAST, which is a camp for young children and they will be running a camp there during the summer.

We’re also expanding the programs in general, as well as the softball leagues for both men and women.”

The PAL’s new board of directors are Stuart Lieblein-president, Stephen Sombrotto-vice president, Rob Nachimson-treasurer, Diana Polveresecretary, Tracy Lefkowitz-registrar and Tom Scalise-registrar. The PAL is a nonprofit organization comprised of all volunteers.

HEARTS Announces Red Hot Trivia Night

A virtual fundraiser to support arts and arts education

EARTS is thrilled to announce Red Hot Trivia on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m., a virtual game night to support the arts and arts education in Port Washington.

This special virtual evening, featuring fun and engaging arts-themed trivia, continues HEARTS’s annual Red Party tradition, though adapted online in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. All proceeds from this online event go towards HEARTS’s mission and future initiatives to enrich and support the arts in the Port Washington community and public school programs.

Mike Hope of Game On Trivia will host HEARTS’s Red Hot Trivia event, with all categories focused on the arts.

Local Author Delivers Message Of Self-Love In New Children’s Book

n these unprecedented times, it is of utmost importance to teach children the value of compassion and how to be accepting of oneself and others in even the toughest of situations.

Award-winning author and food allergy advocate, Stephanie Sorkin, is a firm believer in this notion, recently released her fourth children’s book entitled, “Am I a Unicorn?,” written to educate children on the value of acceptance and the beauty in differences.

An adorable story written in rhyme, “Am I a Unicorn?” tells the tale of a unicorn that loses its horn and the series of emotions they go through as they try to fix their most distinguishing feature. If their horn is gone, are they really a unicorn?

It’s coming to terms with identity, touching on self-esteem and diversity and teaching the important lesson that it’s what’s on the inside that matters most.

Sorkin, a mother of three herself, was inspired to write “Am I a Unicorn?” as a way of opening up a discussion about what it’s like to be different, hoping that children will realize that as much as everyone wants to be accepted, it’s most important to accept ourselves. Rather than use all unicorns in the story, she chose to use a diverse array of animals to give children a chance to see that not everyone’s the same before even reading a single word of the book. Similar to Sorkin’s previous books, she donates a portion of the proceeds from “Am I a Unicorn?” to various charities supporting children.

he Port Washington Chamber of Commerce SOUPer Bowl is always a welcome respite from the cold winter weather. The SOUPer Bowl Committee has turned this premiere foodie event into a safe and fun contest for these unprecedented times. SOUPer Bowl XIV will take place on Feb. 6, in people’s homes.

Local restaurants will still donate their best soups to the event. But instead of a large gathering, people have signed up to be a taster on the chamber’s website, pwcoc.org.

The soup reservations were sold out in four days. On SOUPer Bowl Saturday—Feb. 6—each person who signed up will go to the Archangel Michael Greek Orthodox Church and pick up a reusable tote bag full of 6-ounce portions of each soup to take home. They can then heat taste the soups and vote online for their favorites. Kids will be able to vote too, to determine the Kids Choice.

School SupPORT: Five Ways To Avoid Zoom Fatigue And Burnout As students finish up midterm season in high school and middle school, it is important to acknowledge the “burnout” feeling that comes along with this, especially this year. Gazing at screens for classes and review sessions and staying on them after school to do homework and study is exhausting.

Additionally, with COVID-19 continuing to spread throughout our community, it is hard to find a balance between school, homework and free-time when it is all being conducted under the same roof. It is crucial that students of all ages learn how to cope with this “Zoom fatigue,” as they will unfortunately have to deal with online learning for at least the remainder of this year. Here are some ways to cope with that feeling of Zoom fatigue, or that tiredness and burnout associated with communicating and working

Self-care does not have to be expensive or time consuming, it can be as simple as taking a bath or cooking up a scrumptious new recipe. Doing something that makes you feel good is what self-care is all

about. Your mind and mental health need attention after staring at a screen all day, so incorporating different forms of self-care throughout the week is key.

5. Socialize with family and friends. It can become very isolating to be on a computer all day, so talking and laughing with family and friends is a giant mood-booster. Even though we can’t physically see each other as often because safely gathering outdoors is challenging in freezing temperatures, picking up the phone and catching up with a friend is greatly beneficial.

Students need to socialize with each other and people outside of their classes in order to maintain a healthy social life and set of social skills. This is why facetiming and calling a friend is important, even if it means a few extra minutes on a screen.

Winter Track and Field also started their competitive season on Jan. 21.

After years of success, they hoped to continue their strong track record in this shortened season. For them, this season will be especially strange, as all of their meets will be held virtually.

Coaches will record scores from each event, and they will be compared alongside the scores of other teams, who participated from their home schools as well. Their scores haven’t fully been updated yet, but the team looks promising as they continue the season.

The final sport to kick off is gymnastics. Although some parts of competitive team gymnastics are not yet allowed, the team is still preparing for other events. Their first meet was also virtual, on Jan. 23, against Wantagh. It was held indoors at the gym of Sousa Elementary School, and it was livestreamed, as no spectators are allowed

at any matches yet. They easily won, with a score of 150-93.1.

Now, you may be wondering, what about other winter sports, like basketball, wrestling and volleyball?

These sports are all on the “high risk” list, and therefore could not start with the rest of Schreiber’s teams. However, good news was delivered this week.

Governor Cuomo announced that these higher-risk sports would be able to begin on Feb 1, as long as certain guidelines are followed and school infection rates remain low. Nassau County will still have to approve this decision, but it seems likely they will. As of publication, Schreiber has announced that they will begin these sports on Feb. 1. Nassau County Executive Laura Curran approved of Cuomo’s decision, and said that she wants Nassau County’s Health Department to work with schools to get these high-risk sports up and running safely. With school sports kicking off and more to come, Port Washington’s student-athletes have plenty to look forward to throughout the rest of the school year.

Town To Host Live Remote Exercise Classes For Seniors

S

upervisor Judi Bosworth and the Town Board have announced that Project Independence (PI), the town’s aging-in-place initiative, will be offering a slate of live, at-home exercise classes for seniors to be held over Zoom. The classes are being offered to senior residents free of charge.

“Throughout the pandemic, our remote exercise classes have been extremely popular among our residents,” Bosworth said. “These classes provide our seniors with an opportunity to stay fit and active while remaining safe at home. These new live classes will add an interactive component which we hope our residents will enjoy.”

The upcoming live Zoom class schedule includes: • Dance Fitness: Mondays, Feb. 1 to June 14 at 2 p.m. with Margaret Gatzonis (no class Feb. 15, March 29 and May 31)

Spotlight On The Harlem Renaissance T

he fifth annual Black History Month celebration of Westbury Arts brings together storytellers, dancers and singers to reflect on the Harlem Renaissance, an intellectual and cultural period in American History.

The free Zoom event will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

In the 1920s, resulting from the great Migration out of the South into the Northeast, Harlem became the center of a flowering of African American intellectual, cultural and artistic expression, bringing to prominence people such as Langston Hughes, Alain Locke, Zora Neale Hurston, William H. Johnson, Cab Calloway, Jessie Redman Fauset, Nella Larsen and Georgia Douglas Johnson.

“Their genius captivated, entertained and inspired the world; the history of the Harlem Renaissance will continue to be a beacon of inspiration for future generations,” Shirley Darkeh, a noted storyteller who will be the mistress of ceremonies, said.

Darkeh is the former director of the African American Museum of Nassau County.

The event offers a rich tapestry of live and recorded performance. After a showing of his Harlem Renaissance paintings, artist Henry M. Blackmon III talks about his influences. Storyteller Gwen Marable draws upon her experiences and research growing up in segregated Cincinnati in the ’30s and ’40s, reciting the poems of Langston Hughes will be part

of her telling of his story.

“And I might even sing a little bit, if the mood hits me,” Marable, who is a member of the Black Storytellers Association, said.

Reverend Melissa Marlin offers a jazz rendition of “Life Every Voice and Sing,” and the Uniondale High School Show Choir performs a tribute song.

Gambling On High-Risk Sports

Sportsmanship and the age-old rituals of athletic competition will have to take a back seat to safety as student-athletes get ready to engage in high-risk sports across New York State.

On Jan. 22, Governor Andrew Cuomo, citing declining COVID positivity rates, unexpectedly allowed sports such as basketball and wrestling—labeled “high risk”—to go ahead.

The New York State Department of Health (DOH) unveiled a long list of guidelines under which competition can take place. Practices can begin on Feb. 1 and basketball contests can start as early as Feb. 8 with wrestling matches to follow Feb. 10. Spectators will be limited, and masks, hand washing and other safety protocols will be enforced.

The Nassau County Department of Health signed off on the new regulations, and on Jan. 27, County Executive Laura Curran and Health Commissioner Dr. Larry Eisenstein presided at a press conference at Bay Park in East Rockaway.

“We’re here to announce that Nassau County is giving the goahead—we’re making it official now.

We’re letting our kids to play ball,” Curran said. “The state has given thorough guidance to let athletes get back safely on the fields and the courts.

Kids need to be out, they need to play.

It’s important for their development.

It’s important for scholarships.”

Curran said she had faith that all 56 public school districts would make the right choices. Individual districts and even parents and guardians could opt out of participating if they so chose.

Districts will need to file a safety plan with the county’s DOH, and there will be spots checks by DOH personnel to assure compliance.

Curran asked parents to be vigilant, citing postgame parties where teens may engage in risky behaviors.

“As we know, social events are where diseases spread,” she said. “We wouldn’t want an outbreak to happen at a postgame party. Because you know what’s going to happen—COVID spreads, then the sports shuts down.

In the fall, under the governor’s guidelines, Section VIII decided to allow low-risk sports such as bowling, swimming and gymnastics to start Jan. 4. Winter track will be allowed, but for once adhering to its name, all meets will be held outdoors.

“The kids are enjoying it. I don’t know of any instances where disease was spread through our sports,” Pizzarelli told reporters.

Bipartisanship is a tool in freshman Congressman’s legislative toolbox

A

ndrew Garbarino called his first few weeks in Washington D.C. as a freshman Congressman representing the Second Congressional District “a baptism by fire.” How else would he describe a three-week span that saw the Electoral Count Act, the final step to confirm President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the 2020 presidential election over incumbent President Donald Trump, a protest over the count, the Trump rally, an insurrectionist assault on the Capitol, a presidential inauguration and a House of Representatives impeachment vote? And while the partisan divide in the nation’s capitol is and has been a chasm seemingly incapable of being bridged, Garbarino is intent in building off the message of unity Biden delivered to the country.

“I went to George W. Bush’s second inauguration when I was in college and it was packed and everyone was excited,” Garbarino recalled. “President Biden’s speech was 10 minutes shorter than it would have been at a normal inauguration because there weren’t pauses for standing ovations and clapping. It was just eerily quiet and wasn’t like what I had experienced years ago.

I enjoyed his speech, especially the unification part. Let’s go with a clean slate and all work together for the American people.”

The Sayville native is so firm in wanting to work across the aisle that he signed on to a letter sent to the president early on Inauguration by a group of House GOP freshmen pledging to “rise above the partisan fray to negotiate meaningful change for Americans across the nation.” What started out as a note penned by Beth Van Duyne from Texas to express her freshman class’ desire to start on a fresh note with the administration was enthusiastically

“The Problem Solvers Caucus provides bipartisan solutions to issues large and small,” Garbarino said.

“That’s why my experience in Albany is going to help so much. I was in the extreme minority in Albany and I was still able to work with the other side and produce for my district. You need to find common ground or absolutely nothing will get done. Republicans and Democrats have to work together.”

While Garbarino is optimistic, as a conservative, he hasn’t been too pleased to see the number of executive orders President Biden has been signing. It’s reminiscent of his experiences in the state capital that he felt flew in the face of bipartisanship.

“I’ve experienced executive orders and regulations in Albany and they don’t work,” he said. “It doesn’t work when you circumvent the legislature.

There is a lot of stuff that is vetted out, debated and corrected in the legislative process and to skip over it just to go to executive orders is when real issues happen. As a legislator, I’ve never liked when any executive has done it—Republican or Democrat. Laws are not supposed to be done by executive fiat—we have a legislature for a reason.

I’m hoping that’s not the way we see things go because if it is in the first 100 days, [otherwise] I feel that’s where we’re going to be for the rest of the next two years.”

Garbarino is already working across the aisle with Democrat Mondaire Jones to introduce the SALT Deductibility Act, bipartisan legislation which restores the full State and Local Tax (SALT) deduction. The proposal would allow taxpayers to fully deduct their state and local taxes on their federal income returns.

“If we increase it [significantly], that’s going to help a lot of people in my district and a lot of people in New York,” Garbarino said. “My job is not to be down here to be a Republican. My job is to be down here and make my constituents’ lives better.”

hree Syosset middle school students have been named as finalists in the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra (MYO) of New York’s Concerto and Vocal Competition.

South Woods Middle School students Minsoo Chae (grade 6) and Cody Cheng (grade 8) and H. B. Thompson Middle School student Cadence Chen (grade 8) are all Instrumental Finalists in Division I representing grades 4-8.

Chae, Cheng and Chen, who play the violin, cello and viola respectively, each submitted a video audition recording of themselves performing one movement from a concerto. They are among 16 total finalists from grades 4-12 who will be featured in a virtual Finalists Concert on Feb. 3 on Zoom.

Mathnasium Donates To Island Harvest Food Bank

athnasium of Great Neck and Mathnasium of Roslyn, owned by Karen and Alan Flyer, as well as Mathnasium of Commack, owned by Satish Nagarajan, joined forces to donate to Island Harvest Food Bank, Long Island’s largest hunger-relief organization. Mathnasium students, who earn reward cards for completing Mathnasium materials, were given the opportunity to donate their “punch cards” to Island Harvest Food Bank in lieu of trading them in for prizes. The Flyers and Nagarajan matched the accumulated contributions of their students and are pleased to donate a combined $1,500 (representing 3,000 meals), as well as 67 pounds of food, to Island Harvest Food Bank.

Long Island has not been spared from the increases in food insecurity seen across the country. Since March 9, Island Harvest Food Bank has supported more than 11 million meals through the distribution of more than 13 million pounds of food to more than 530,000 individuals and families affected by the pandemic, an increase of 83 percent above the previous year. Island Harvest Food Bank has partnered with more than 30 Long Island school districts to distribute food at schools to the needy families

Garden City Junior Sets The Stage For Success With Perfect SATs

arden City High School junior Emma Nagler is on a bright path as she prepares for senior year and works toward her aspirations for college and beyond. Nagler earned impeccable scores of 1600 and 1520 on the SAT and PSAT, respectively, putting her several steps ahead in her high school journey.

While students typically take the SAT during the spring of their junior year and in the fall as seniors, Nagler did so early and accomplished perfection. She took the SAT in December of 2020 after mastering the PSAT just a

few months prior in October.

Nagler takes numerous Advanced Placement courses, serves as treasurer for the Italian Club, plays the clarinet and is a member of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. She is also a talented and skilled ballerina and dedicates 25 hours a week to practicing with a pre-professional student-based company. She performs in the group’s biannual productions and most recently took the stage in the Nutcracker. She plans to continue her dance involvement in college.

Robust academic interests paired

with her dance background have inspired Nagler’s goal of becoming an orthopedic surgeon and specifically working with dancers.

“I find the medical field in general fascinating, I love science and I like the idea of helping people,” she said.

Garden City Village Treasurer Irene Woo has qualified for the Credentialed Municipal Finance Officer (CMFO) designation, considered a declaration that Woo is proficient in her position and that she has demonstrated masterly of skills critical to succeeding as a well-respected municipal finance officer.

“I am honored to have attained this designation,” Woo said. “Having worked most of my career in the private sector, it was important for me to continue my education specializing in municipal finance to stay informed of the ever-changing government finance issues and mandates that we face.”

The board of trustees appointed Woo, a Garden City resident, in July 2015.

She is a New York State Certified Public Accountant, having previously worked at AXA Equitable in New York for 19 years in various roles. The last five years she served as Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis, where she managed and directed the company’s expense management initiatives and processes, including budgeting, forecasting and expense analysis for gross expenditures in excess of $1.2 billion.

Village Board Gives Statement On Garden City Casino The Garden City Board of Trustees has been in contact with members of the Garden City Casino Board, contrary to several media posts stating otherwise. We consider the casino an asset in this community and look forward to negotiating a long-term agreement with its members.

In October 2020, Mayor Theresa Trouvé, along with Building Superintendent Giuseppe Giovanniello, and casino members Peter Trapani and Mike Ryder, toured the facility. Though the Mayor and Mr. Giovanniello thought the building, in general, was in good condition, they did note several areas needed repair, including the HVAC system, roof and dry wells in the patio area to the east of the building. Improvements to the kitchen were also discussed.

The Mayor also addressed concerns and cleared up “mistaken ideas” during a Central Property Owners’ Association meeting in November.

The village-owned casino has operated as a tennis and social club since 1895. Members are asking the board to

approve a multi-year extension of the agreement, which expires in January 2022. The original agreement expired in May 2019. The board approved two short-term extensions—the first until January 2021 and the second until January 2022.

Trustee Mark Hyer has been in contact with casino board president

Pat McNamara, to keep him abreast of any activity happening on the property, including contractors who are on site estimating the cost of renovations.

On Jan. 11, trustee Hyer and village counsel Peter Bee did a facility walk through with casino board member Drew Wozniak and Mr. Trapani, who led the tour. Village counsel has also requested the casino’s financial reports and a property survey.

“After this, we will get a proposal together for approval by the village board and sit down with members of the casino,” Trustee Hyer said.

As negotiations move forward, this board is committed to working with casino members to ensure an amicable agreement for future use of this historic facility.

t’s no secret that the “C” word has people rethinking their Big Game Day plans, and many who traditionally celebrate by going to their favorite pub or restaurant for a viewing party are preparing now for an at-home celebration.

We recently asked some of the self-proclaimed, “Foodies” of Facebook’s Long Island Foodie group page what will be included in their home celebration menus for the Big Game and were surprised to not just find that many people are doing a lot of homecooking, but more specifically, they will be giving their air fryers a good game day workout.

Here’s what some of them told us they have planned:

REMEMBERING GLENN HOWARD councilwoman, I was invited to participate in many Rotary events. I was always impressed with the wonderful works of the Rotary and told Glenn that I would love to join.

My first Rotary meeting happened to be Glenn’s last meeting. Glenn was working on a grant for a community project. I told Glenn and the members of the Rotary about the Sgt. Ralph W. Young Memorial monument, which is in desperate need of a refurbishment. Sgt. Young was a 23-year-old African American Glen Cove man who was killed in World War II. For many years his monument sat in front of the Glen Cove City Hall, which is now the Glen Cove Police Department. It

was moved to Monument Park by the Glen Cove DPW in 2018 and temporarily placed on the ground. The Rotary grant will help to pay for necessary upgrades and the proper monument Sgt. Young so deserves. This project has the full support of the Glen Cove Rotary organization.

The leaders of our local veteran organizations, Fred Nielsen, president of the Glen Cove Veterans Council and Dave Hubbard, commander of the Young Simmons American Legion Post No. 1765, are thrilled and ready to assist in this venture.

On Friday, Jan. 8, at 2 p.m., Glenn, Jacki Yonick and I held a Zoom meeting to put the finishing touches on the

grant application. Glenn typed feverishly to complete the application for the Rotary president’s signature. It was obviously imperative that Glenn complete this task.

Within a couple of hours, we heard that Glenn had passed away. Knowing him and with disbelief, we thought it was possibly untrue; he was quite the joker. Sadly, sudden death is the truth. The loss of Glenn makes the completion of this project even more of a priority.

It is my thinking that Glenn died the way he lived his life, in service of others, always thinking of how he could help.

Rest in peace Glenn. May all your good works be rewarded.

OPEN LETTER TO THE GLEN COVE CITY COUNCIL It has become more than apparent that as members of the Glen Cove City Council you are all just phoning it in and allowing the city attorney to run Glen Cove.

You all ran for office and won with a very impressive victory with the promise of full transparency, yet as each city council meeting goes by you allow the city attorney to further and further restrict information that has routinely been provided to the public.

You all let him explain away his reasoning for denying the publication of the pre-council agenda by him basically saying “we don’t have to give you that.”

The agenda has been provided to residents for as long as I can remember, but you all sat idly by as he prevented that information from being

released. It was good to see you all shamed into providing that information again at the last city council meeting. It was routine information that was suddenly denied to the residents under your watch.

Glen Cove has traditionally had an outside third-party Glen Cove resident as the FOIL (Freedom of Information Law) appeals officer. In most cases it is the city attorney that advises to allow or deny the resident access to the information even though it may not be officially noted.

If a resident is denied information that was requested under the FOIL law they were provided the opportunity to appeal with a neutral third party. That is a right that many Glen Cove residents fought for in past years and

Vaping: A Dangerous Addiction Among Youth Despite the economic woes brought on by the pandemic, one type of store is popping up in increasing numbers in neighborhoods all across Long Island: smoke shops, which carry everything from cigarettes and e-cigarettes to pipes and bongs.

These stores are taking advantage of the growth in popularity of vaping, which involves inhaling and exhaling an aerosol (or vapor) produced by an e-cigarette, vape pen or other smoking device, some of which resemble flash drives or other everyday objects.

You may have heard vaping referred to as JUULing, since the brand JUUL has become so ubiquitous.

Many e-cigs are clearly designed to appeal to young people, with flavors such as strawberry, gummi bear and cotton candy. In 2020, 83 percent of youth e-cigarette consumers used flavored e-cigarettes. (New York is seeking a ban on the sale of these flavored products, but an appellate court placed a hold on the ban this past September.)

I Never Knew My Grandmothers I have clear memories of my grandfathers.

Grandpa Harry, a Polish immigrant, operated a bar-and-grill. I have reason to believe he was involved in bootlegging during prohibition. He had diabetes that led to amputations of both legs, after which he was fitted for prosthetic limbs.

My father took me to the bar every Sunday morning when only the package goods store was open. I recall seeing Grandpa Harry sitting there in his favorite wooden chair and walking around with a cane. That is, before he lost his second leg. He died when I was seven or eight years old.

My grandfather Joseph, who I called Pop, was a Russian immigrant. He was a carpenter. He had a glass

He stayed with us for a short time when we lived in a flat in Newark, NJ, until he found his own place just one block away. I used to visit him there from time to time.

I never knew my grandmothers.

I only know their faces from old photos. Grandma Jenny, a Russian immigrant, died when I was a very young child.

I cannot remember being with her, although I have one photo of her holding me and smiling, soon after I was born.

Grandma Annie, who emigrated from Poland, died sometime before I was born.

I’m not sure exactly when, but I know it was after my parents’ wedding.

From time to time I’ve wondered if my mom was grieving for her when she was pregnant with me. I’m sure she missed her and would have wanted her to know her first grandson.

New York Auto Dealers Turn Cars Into Coats For Children In Need Long Island dealer donates $6,000 for coats

Auto dealers in downstate New York are helping keep children warm this winter by turning cars into coats for those in need, as the COVID-19 crisis has created financial hardship for families throughout the region.

Members of the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association (GNYADA) are buying coats by raising money from members for each car sold, as well as donating thousands of dollars more, to provide winter coats to children on Long Island, in New York City and the Lower Hudson Valley.

“New car and truck dealers in local communities all over metro New York are some of the largest contributors to charities each year,” GNYADA President Mark Schienberg said. “One of the most important efforts occurs during the cold winter months when New Yorkers need winter coats. It is the enormous generosity of these vital small business owners, their employees and customers that makes the cold months a little easier for people in need of assistance.”

He added. “This has been a difficult year for all businesses, but auto dealers have once again stepped up to lead the way in helping those who have been impacted by COVID-19 and the economic blow it has dealt

On Monday, Jan. 25, Long Island Auto Group, which includes Jaguar Land Rover of Glen Cove, donated $6,000—enough to purchase brand-new coats for 300 children—to Operation Warm for distribution to the Mildred W. Fairclough Foundation, a local nonprofit organization that provides vital services to Long Islanders in need.

“Our partnership with GNYADA and Long Island Auto Group is a wonderful showcase of their commitment to giving back to the communities they serve,” said Heather Connolly, vice presient of partnerships &

GNYADA so far has raised more than $45,000 this winter, enough to donate 2,300 new coats, from its member dealers, and has collected more than 60,000 coats over the last few years. The association is teaming up with Operation Warm, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to donating coats, which received more coat requests by September of 2020 than it did all last winter.

“Our group has participated in the wonderful event that GNYADA

facilitates over the years collecting coats for those that are less fortunate,” Long Island Auto Group President Michael Levitan said.

“I was delighted when GNYADA announced the program for this year, as I had feared that we would not be able to collect coats like we have done in the past. I couldn’t let the opportunity slip by and was more than happy that we were able to do our part and contribute.”

GNYADA had been for many years the largest multi-location collector of winter coats for the annual New York Cares coat drive, collecting more than 60,000 coats. This year, because of COVID-19 safety restrictions, dealers could not physically collect coats, so GNYADA turned to Operation Warm to continue its coat drive tradition by donating funds to purchase brand new coats.

GNYADA dealers are among New York’s most generous small businesses, donating more than $21 million to philanthropic causes in 2019. The association represents franchised new car dealerships throughout the 12 downstate counties of New York that support more than 71,000 jobs.

Operation Warm is a national nonprofit that manufactures brandnew, high-quality coats for children in need. The organization aims to donate 500,000 coats during the winter of 2020-21.

Tentative assessed values for the 2022-23 assessment roll for every property have been finalized and are being mailed. Homeowners can visit www.mynassauproperty.com to find posts of tentative assessments.

Homeowners who believe their assessed value for the 2022-23 assessment roll is inaccurate can file an “Application for Correction of Assessment” with ARC before the close of the grievance filing period, now set for April 30.

Due to the instability of Nassau County’s real estate market caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the continued economic hardships homeowners and businesses face, the county has paused valuation updates for the 2022-23 assessment roll. Unless a homeowner has since received a correction of error, an assessment reduction, or physically altered an improvement, their notice of tentative assessment should reflect the same assessment as the previous assessment roll, which protects against updates based on the current chaotic real estate market.

Homeowners can find the calendar of virtual legislative meetings online at www.nassaucountyny.gov/arc and can file their grievance on this site. There is no fee to file an “Application for Correction of Assessment” with the county. For individuals who do not have Internet access, the application can be obtained in person at ARC located at 240 Old Country Rd. in Mineola, or by contacting ARC at 516-571-3214.

Property owners are encouraged to check ARC’s website for up-to-date information.

Elmont Man Arrested For Target Grand Larcenies

Third Squad detectives report the arrest of an Elmont man for numerous incidents of larceny that occurred in Nassau County.

According to detectives, Dean Leipsner, 57, was identified as the person responsible for numerous larcenies that occurred between Oct. 19, 2020 and Jan. 12 in Target stores located in Westbury, Valley Stream, Levittown and Port Washington.

Leipsner was located at his last known address and was placed under arrest for thefts of over the counter medication that totaled in excess of $3,500.

Leipsner is charged with third-degree grand larceny and three counts of petit larceny. He was arraigned on Jan. 25.

Two Wanted In Mineola Larceny Third Squad detectives are investigating a larceny that occurred on Dec. 30, at 12:26 p.m. in Mineola.

According to detectives, a resident, who rents an apartment above an Old Country Road storefront, between Geranium Avenue and Juniper Avenue, received an email regarding a package that was delivered to his address.

Man Arrested In Carle Place For Assault The Third Squad reports the arrest of a Franklin Square man for an assault that occurred on Jan. 25 at 12:30 a.m. in Carle Place.

According to detectives, Third Precinct officers responded to a disturbance at the Homewood Suites, located at 40 Westbury Ave. Upon arrival officers were notified of an unauthorized party in a guest suite.

As officers arrived at the suite they observed multiple people having a party. As officers were escorting the unauthorized guests out of the room they observed another group of people in the bedroom of the suite. In the bedroom a male subject was standing over a female, 17, with a closed fist,

ready to strike her. Officers approached the male to prevent the subject from striking the female. The subject turned towards the officers and began throwing punches. After a brief struggle, the defendant Cameron Wezkiewicz, 18, was taken into custody. He was transported to an area hospital for an evaluation. During the struggle an officer was injured and transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries.

Wezkiewicz has been charged with second-degree assault, third-degree menacing, resisting arrest and fourth-degree criminal mischief. He was arraigned on Jan. 25 in Mineola.

Fatal Car Accident In Westbury The Homicide Squad is investigating a fatal auto accident that occurred on Jan. 27 at 4:05 a.m. in Westbury.

According to detectives, a male, 27, was operating his 2018 Honda Accord northbound on Carmen Avenue when he lost control of the vehicle and struck a pole near Lake Lane. Officers responded to the scene and the driver was pronounced deceased by a Nassau County Police Medic. A male passenger, 27, was transported to an area hospital in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing.

Hicksville Middle School students recently participated in the Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Patriot’s Pen program is designed to foster patriotism by allowing students the opportunity to express their opinions on democracy based on an annual theme. Hicksville Middle School students wrote essays on the theme, “What is Patriotism to Me?” Veterans from the William M. Grouse VFW Post 3211 in Hicksville read the student essays and selected the student winners.

Andrea Mortillaro, a special education teacher from Wisdom Lane Middle School in the Levittown Public Schools, was selected as one of 15 individuals to receive the 2020 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award. The winning student team led by teacher Audrey Demas placed first among 387 teams in the region and 30th out of 3,918 teams in New York State. The team includes students George Lampropoulos, Matthew Lee, Brian Samers and Damien Schmidt. The game ran from Oct. 5, through Dec. 11, with each team beginning with a virtual $100,000 to invest in NYSE and NASDAQ stocks. The Roslyn team earned $33,281.24 on their investments, with top holdings that

included Tesla, Inc., Apple Inc., Nike Inc., Walt Disney Co., Walmart Inc. and Target Corp.

“Working with these students was inspiring,” Roslyn Middle School teacher Audrey Demas, said. “They used what they learned in class and had great insight into their chosen companies. I commend them for their admirable ability to work cooperatively in decision making. I’m so proud of each one of them.”

Frank had three brothers, James (Patricia), Thomas (Allison) and William (Maureen). Frank is predeceased by his parents and brothers William and James. Frank was a devoted and loving husband to his wife Jane, who predeceased him just six weeks earlier.

Jane and Frank celebrated 41 years of marriage on Sept. 22 and are now reunited again. Frank is survived by his children, Timothy (Meaghan) and Courtney, as well as his three cherished grandsons, Colin, Patrick and Jack Miller. Frank’s interests were varied and many, but his true devotion in life were his wife, son Timothy and the faithful and loving care of his daughter Courtney. GLEN HEAD Bernard Joseph Giarraputo “Bernie,” 77, of Glen Head passed away peacefully on Jan. 11, at the Inn at Melville. Bernie was born in Brooklyn, the son of the late Josephine and Vincent Giarraputo. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in foreign language at St. John’s University in Queens and an educational administration degree at Hofstra University.

He served as an attendance coordinator and dean at North Shore High School, as well as a Spanish teacher earlier in his career. He retired in 2000. But Bernie did not stop serving.

Perhaps you recognize him as an usher for St. Patrick’s Church in Glen Cove, a former member of the Knights of Columbus, or from his second fulfilling career caring for bereaved families at McLaughlin, Kramer and Megiel Funeral Home.

Bernie is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janet, his sons Bernard Garra (Pamela) of Stamford, CT and Vincent Giarraputo (Tara) of Huntington and his granddaughters Julia and Sarah. A funeral mass was held at the Church of St. Boniface Martyr in Sea Cliff.

Marion Pasnik, 98, a 60-year resident of Roslyn, passed away from COVID complications on Jan 20, 2021.

She is lovingly remembered by her three children, Alan, Diane, and Amy; two grandchildren, Jen and David; daughter-in-law Cindy; and sons-in-law Peter and Greg. Her beloved husband Joel passed away in 2013 after almost 70 years of marriage.

Marion was born in New York City in 1922. She received her Bachelor’s degree in accounting from City College of New York in 1942, her Master’s degree in Education from NYU in 1945, and her PhD in Education Administration from Columbia University in 1968. Marion began her career as an accountant. Once her children were in school, she served as a frequent substitute elementary school teacher in the Roslyn school system. Later, she changed careers to serve as a senior planner for the New York City Board of Education, designing the facilities of all new schools. She retired from that position in her 70s.

Marion and Joel moved their young family to Roslyn Pines in 1953.

They both unselfishly volunteered their time to their new community.

She actively served on the local Hadassah Chapter Board and the Roslyn School System Board of Education while Joel served on the Roslyn Village Board of Trustees and then as Mayor until 1995. Marion lived her last 8 years independently at the Amsterdam senior community in Port Washington, volunteering on many of the residential committees.

Marion was a force of nature for all of her 98 years, always a doer rather than an observer. She knew what she wanted, treating life as a competition which she almost always won. She never admitted to her chronological age and refused to give up her favorite activities. She played her last golf round at 96, her last game of tennis at 90, drove until 95, and took her last international trip at 85. She didn’t give up her daily bridge, canasta, and mahjong games until the last few months of her life.

Marion was laid to rest in the family plot in the Mt Eden Cemetery, Hawthorne NY, on Jan 22.

Gloria Dorothy Shima passed peacefully on January 17, 2021, a few weeks shy of her 90th birthday, at the Meadow Lakes Senior Community, Hightstown, NJ where she lived independently for the last 7 years of her life.

Born Dorothy Gloria Lacey on Feb 25, 1931 in New York City, she was the daughter of Michael and Katherine Lacey. Gloria was the younger sister of Thomas and Michael Lacey, and older sister to Joan Dowling and Carole Bellairs.

She loved growing up in New York, and shared fond memories of a childhood spent visiting the opera houses after school and playing street games on the stoop with other neighborhood children.

While raising her five girls in Port Washington on Long Island, Gloria worked as a bookkeeper for Master Iron Craft in Plainview. Her house by The Mill Pond was famous for the large ship bell on the lawn, a historical relic now housed at the South Street Seaport Museum in New York City.

Gloria was a voracious reader and avid follower of current events. She loved the opera, especially Turandot and anything else Pavarotti, and thought that Dan Rather was just as handsome as Paul Newman.

Gloria was the beloved matriarch of the Shima Girls: five daughters, nine granddaughters, and three grandsons. She is predeceased by her daughter Nancy Shima, and is survived by her daughters Jeanne Ward, Joanne Shima-Raboteau, Carole Mendelson, and Jacqueline O’Dowd and son-in-law James O’Dowd and by twelve grandchildren: Jeanne’s daughters Katherine and Meghan, Nancy’s girls Kelly and Rosie, Joanne’s daughters Jane and Annie, Carole’s children Sophie, Michael, and Kyra, and Jackie’s children Daniel, Matthew, and Rebecca. She will be missed by her nieces and many nephews.

She was known as a funny, gentle woman proud of her lovely daughters and their families. She will be forever missed by all those she touched.

Mary Rose Zinober

Mary Rose Zinober graced the earth on December 16, 1925 as Mary Rose Silverman, and left the world surrounded by her loved ones on the evening of January 12, 2021.

She was born at Richmond Hill Hospital in Queens, New York, starred at Richmond Hill High School, and graduated cum laude from Queens College in New York, living home with her mom, Sadie, her dad, Leo, and her older brother, Buddy.

When she was 16, as a member of the Young Readers’ Club in New York, she attended a party at the home of a friend, Lorraine Sarnoff. She didn’t realize it at the time, but Lorrain’s 17-year-old cousin, Bernie Zinober, was sitting in a chair with

another young lady on his lap, gazing at Mary.

Once he saw Mary, however, he was permanently smitten, and knew that he could never turn back from the girl of his dreams. At the time, he was too bashful to say much to her, but, after World War II broke out and Bernie had joined the Marines, he started writing letters to her in the most beautiful manner, with the most magnificent handwriting imaginable. Mary didn’t even realize who it was at the time, but the tenderness of his correspondence, while surrounded by war in the Pacific, captured her heart. While battling the Japanese, Bernie made sure that his sisters, Esther and Laura, took Mary out to make sure that she was entertained and happy. Together, they huddled as Bernie climbed Mount Suribachi in Iwo Jima, where the young corporal was wounded.

Bernie recovered, the war ended, and, on June 23, 1946, months after Bernie was discharged, Mary, only twenty years old at the time, and Bernie, who was twenty-one, were wed in Richmond Hill. After residing with Mary’s parents for 6 years, they eventually moved to Mineola on Long Island, where they raised their two boys, Richard and Fred. Bernie spent his career as an editor of an automotive magazine in New York City. While raising her sons along with her husband, Mary eventually matriculated at Hofstra college to attain her master’s degree in education and became a beloved elementary school teacher of first through

third graders at Jackson Avenue School in Mineola.

Every morning, Mary would have her students recite her lifelong creed: “The Golden Rule,” after the Pledge of Allegiance.

Although she and Bernie took active roles in their son’s academic and athletic exploits, they both also found time to lead several organizations in the Mineola community. Eventually, Mary and Bernie retired, and, when Fred moved to Florida, they followed him to Pinellas County where they took a highly active and loving role in helping to raise their granddaughter, April. Mary and Bernie also enjoyed interacting with their stepchildren, Tina Dulaney and Lucas Chaffin, as well as Tina and Luke’s children, to whom Mary would often read.

Eventually, Bernie transitioned into the next life in 2003 after 57 years of beloved marriage to Mary. Eighteen years later (almost to the day), after making sure that Richard, Fred and his wife, Carolyn, as well as Luke, Tina and their families, and, most importantly, April, were well, happy, healthy, and held the promise of a prosperous future, Mary peacefully joined Bernie in eternal life, leaving behind a lifetime of love and memories.

Mary, as a long-time lover of animals, would welcome any contributions that anyone wishes to make in her name to be offered to the Suncoast Animal League, 1030 Pennsylvania Ave., Palm Harbor, Florida, 34683, where Tina is an active volunteer.

Philly Pretzel Factory Opens In New Hyde Park

ounder of the popular Philly Pretzel Factory Dan DiZio started selling soft pretzels in his neighborhood when he was 11—becoming a child entrepreneur with a sales team of kids from all around the town. He missed pretzels when he went away to school, so after graduation DiZio partnered with his college buddy Len Lehman to found the original Philly Pretzel Factory location in the Mayfair section of Philadelphia. Both of them were inspired by their love for pretzels and experiences with the original Phillybased pretzel bakeries, and held a deep respect for those founding fathers whose wholesale bakeries in the warehouses in and around Philadelphia fed the locals.

Now, after more than 20 years, Philly Pretzel Factory has more than 170 stores with one of them being in New Hyde Park, which opened last week.

“We loved the location of the store because it was close to Lake Success Shopping Center,” Brigitte Louzeiro said, who co-owns the New Hyde Park location alongside Keith Joel. “At the time, we were having a difficult time finding a location and happen to see this vacancy as it went on the market.

We were lucky enough that the landlord knew about Philly Style Pretzels from his childhood.”

Louzeiro said the store’s first week of opening was exciting and exhausting.

“That’s good because we have been well received,” she said. “We fell in love

with the product and the company.

We are happy to bring Philly style fresh oven-baked pretzels to the North Shore of Nassau.”

Besides pretzels, customers who drop by can also try the store’s pretzel hot dogs and the Philly cheesesteak bites along with its various array of dips including brownie batter, nacho cheese and other flavors.

“All of those go very well with our frozen lemonade drinks,” Louzeiro explained. “We also offer a variety of party platters. They are still popular even with COVID. Employers find it to be an affordable way to treat their staff with our pretzels. We have had some orders going to essential workers and also people who are quarantined at home.”

So what seems to be the most

popular menu item?

“The most popular seems to be the rivets; they are bite-size pieces of pretzels, they come with a dip and also come in salted and cinnamon sugar,” Louzeiro added.

Louzerio also wanted to inform potential customers that they can park easily on Hillside Avenue just to pop in and out to get their pretzels and there is also parking in the back.

Philly Pretzel Factory is located at 2105 Hillside Ave. in New Hyde Park and is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Mondays through Saturdays and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays.

New Hyde Park Memorial’s Student Newspaper Earns Gold Medal New Hyde Park Memorial High School’s student newspaper, The Chariot, has earned Gold medal recognition from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, earning 966 points out of a possible 1,000.

Issues published during the 201920 school year were submitted for critique in June. A panel of experts evaluated the set, focusing on three categories: Essentials, Verbal and

Visual. Valuable feedback is then provided for the current staff. For the 2019-20 school year, The Chariot was awarded All-Columbian Honors for outstanding achievement in the Essentials and Visual categories.

ew Hyde Park Memorial High School seniors Deep Kaur and Joseph Leonard recently received Outstanding Physical Education Student Awards.

The Nassau Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance virtually honored two outstanding students from 2021 graduating classes across Nassau County who met the required Physical Education Outstanding Student criteria for achievement.

Kaur is a member of the basketball team, and Leonard competes on the football, wrestling and baseball teams.

They are also both in the school’s Leadership Physical Education Program.

The two students were chosen by New Hyde Park Memorial’s physical education staff for going above and beyond for the department and for the school’s athletics.
