Mineola Man Arrested In Rapper Nicki Minaj’s Father’s Hit And Run Death

n arrest was made last week in the hit and run death of rapper Nicki Minaj’s father who was walking along the roadway on Roslyn Road and Raff Avenue in Mineola.

The hit and run Charles Polevich incident happened (Photo courtesy of NCPD) on Friday, Feb. 12 at 6:15 p.m. According to Homicide Squad detectives, while walking in the roadway on Roslyn Road at the intersection of Raff Avenue, 64-year-old Robert Maraj was struck by a northbound vehicle that left the scene of the accident. Maraj was transported to an area hospital and was pronounced deceased by a hospital physician the following day on Feb. 13.

A few days later, 70-year-old Charles Polevich of Mineola turned himself in to police. The vehicle involved was a white 1992 Volvo Series 740 Stationwagon.

Dogs Deemed Dangerous Nassau legislature introduces ‘Benny’s Law’

n Nov. 5, 2019, Legislator John Ferretti was outside his Levittown home with his family and a two-year-old Tibetan Terrier named Benny. While outside, a neighbor’s dog escaped a nearby backyard and attacked Benny. Ferretti, along with the help of two other neighbors, tried to remove the attacking dog’s jaws from Benny, but could not get them to release.

Finally, after Benny gave up fighting, and laid down lifeless, the neighbor’s dog finally let go of the terrier.

Miraculously, Benny survived, but at a cost. He was forced to undergo multiple surgeries costing thousands of dollars. He suffered five fractured ribs, bruised lungs, a fractured chest cavity and multiple lacerations.

“I saw Legislator Ferretti just a few short hours after the attack on Benny happened, and you could see how visibly upset he was about this,” Legislator Rose Marie Walker said. “Our pets are like our children, and when something like this happens, it’s a terrible ordeal.

This law will make sure that residents know about dangerous dogs in the neighborhoods and know to take precautions when in the area.”

Previously, other news reporting agencies have received a noncommittal response from Nassau County Executive Laura Curran about her stance on the proposed Benny’s Law, according to Ferretti. The only thing he knew is that she would be reviewing the legislation before making a determination.

“Since our press conference [about Benny’s Law] last Monday [Feb. 8], there has not been a meeting of the legislature,” said Ferretti. “Presumably, [Benny’s Law] will be passed on Monday [Feb. 22].” The meeting will be held after this story went to press.

Ferretti said the law has unanimous support of the public safety committee, based on a meeting held before the Feb. 8 press conference, and full support of the legislative majority.

“I would assume it’s going to have the full support of the minority as well, but I don’t know that for sure,” said Ferretti.

Following the attack, the dog that attacked Benny was taken by the Town of Hempstead and brought before a judge to determine if it could be returned to the community. The judge ruled that the dog was indeed a dangerous dog, but since the dog only attacked Benny, and did not bite Ferretti or any other people, the judge was forced to return the dog to its

“The word ‘dangerous’ is somewhat misleading, it’s not just someone saying [the dog is] dangerous. There has to be a real, real serious incident precipitating being judiciously dangerous,” Ferretti said.

Speaking about his awareness of other neighborhood dogs and his own dog’s attack, Ferretti said, “I didn’t even know that a dog lived in this house, and it has lived in the house across the street from me for years. And that is because, to the owner’s credit, they were taking the proper precautions and never letting the dog out [unsupervised in the front yard]; accidents happen.”

“Since that day when Benny was attacked, I continue to watch community members walk past that house with their pets and young children, unaware that a dangerous dog lives just steps away,” Ferretti said. “This legislation will help to keep residents safe and informed; hopefully saving residents from having to go through what Benny, my family and I have had to go through.”

Ferretti said he has received calls from across the county, and even some from pet owners across the country, who have suffered similar or worse violent attacks on their own dogs, grateful of the efforts to make this law a reality.

“People have also responded to me and said things like dogs aren’t dangerous, people are dangerous,” said Ferretti. “I agree with that 100 percent; this is not about villainizing dogs or changing standards to increase what is judicially dangerous, that’s not what this bill is about.

“The only thing this does is provide notice when a dog is deemed dangerous,” he added. “Dogs have been deemed dangerous by judges for decades; it’s just that now when it happens, we’ll know it.”

Although Benny has made a complete physical recovery, he has not recovered mentally and emotionally.

To this day, Ferretti said Benny cannot be around other dogs due to intense fear, and he is unable to go outside without an emotional struggle.

“The only [remaining] injury to Benny is that he’s a different dog,” said Ferretti. “He is not the same dog he was before the attack, and probably never will be again.”

Two Roslyn Juniors Receive Research Grant

R

oslyn High School juniors Timothy Wang and Lindsay Fabricant have each been awarded a 2021 Mini-Research Grant from the New York Institute of Technology (NYIT). The grants will be used to offset expenses with carrying out their research.

Wang’s proposal, students’ attitudes towards different proposed physical education classes, stems from a concern that teens, especially teen girls, are not getting sufficient exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle. While students in most local high schools are required to enroll in physical education classes that meet every other day, Wang’s observations and other students’ anecdotal reports suggest that many students do not seek to capitalize on this opportunity and, instead, often try to avoid exercising during these classes. His project looks to explore how schools might be able to combat this problem and help promote more positive student experiences in physical education classes. Dr. Allyson Weseley, Coordinator of

Secondary Research at Roslyn High School, supported his grant application and will serve as his mentor for the project.

“It’s a project that addresses an important issue,” Dr. Weseley said. “I’m looking forward to seeing the results.”

Fabricant’s proposal, the effect of

the spirit bomb origami design on the grasping capability of a pneumatic soft robotic gripper, has an engineering focus. Working from home with support from Roslyn High School science teacher Lisa Spyridon, Fabricant created a soft robotic gripper that incorporates a “spirit bomb” origami design to improve grasping capability using accessible and affordable materials, with applications in both manufacturing and prosthetics.

The “spirit bomb” origami design is structurally oriented to curl into a ball, like a human finger. The goal is to create grippers that are as dexterous as human hands, improving the flexibility of four-fingered pneumatic soft robotic grippers, while maintaining their stiffness and ability to grasp objects.

“A brilliantly innovative, self-motivated, driven young woman, Lindsay displays a level of passion, curiosity, and commitment unmatched by many students her age,” Lisa Spyridon, teacher and faculty advisor said.

North High Presents Poe: Dreams of Madness

North High School’s Junior Players will present Allyssa Hynes’ play, Poe: Dreams of Madness, based on the gothic short stories of Edgar Allan Poe. The production has been filmed and will be presented as a virtual movie premiere on Saturday, Feb. 27 at 8 p.m., with an online pre-show get-together at 7:30 p.m.

This play features five of Poe’s best-known works, including “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Raven,” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” In order to meet health and safety guidelines, Junior Players delved into a completely new way of putting on a show this school year. Student performances were recorded, edited together, and formatted for an online audience.

Poe: Dreams of Madness will be

presented online free of charge. A link to the virtual movie premier will be provided the week of Feb. 22, along with additional details for viewing.

After the premiere, the link will be provided to those who would like to view it at their own convenience.

Wantagh Fire Department Leads Charge On Multi-Alarm Call

ust before 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, the Wantagh Fire Department responded to a house fire at 1294 Lois Lane in Seaford. Chief of Department Ken Kelly was first to respond. While en route, he was notified by Dispatcher Ed Campis that the Nassau County Police Department was on scene reporting a working fire, prompting Chief Kelly to transmit a “Signal 10.” Second Assistant Chief Lenny Mathewson and Third Assistant Chief Bill Stevens also responded as Kelly arrived on the scene within a minute of the initial call and gave a thorough size-up.

Engine 7 was first to arrive, led by Ex-Captain Dan Brandon. Crews went quickly to work securing a water supply from a nearby hydrant, stretching a hose line and entering the house to locate and extinguish the blaze, which

had traveled from the first to the second floor and attic.

Engine 2, led by Captain Tom Melendez, stretched a second hose line as backup and to protect the interior staircase.

Crews from Ladder 1, led by Captain Bruce Sparke and Ladder 2, led by Lieutenant Alexis Avolio, commenced work searching the house, raising ladders and opening

up walls and ceilings to check for extension of the fire.

Engines 3 and 5 were on scene and crews provided relief to the initial interior teams. EMS coverage at the scene was by crews from Rescues 2, 5 and Rehab 2. Mutual aid was provided at the scene by the North Massapequa Fire Department and Bethpage

Standby coverage at Wantagh Station 2 was by Bethpage Engine 905, North Bellmore Ladder 657 and Levittown Rescue 628.

The cause of the fire, which is not considered suspicious, may be the result of some work that was being done at

the home earlier in the day.

It was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes.

The Nassau County Fire Marshal and Nassau County Police Arson/Bomb Squad were on scene conducting a routine investigation. There were no injuries reported.

Veteran Levittown Firefighters Remembered

T

he officers and members of the Levittown Fire Department are saddened to announce the recent passing of two 50-year members.

Ex-Chief and United States Air Force veteran John “Jack” Sager passed away on Jan. 10, at the age of 84. He joined the department in February 1962 as a member of Ladder Company 1 and served there as firefighter, Lieutenant and Captain before being elected to Deputy Chief. He was elected as Chief of the Department in January 1974 and after completing his term, continued as an active member of the department and Ladder Co. 1 for a total of 58 years.

veteran Vincent Raab passed away on Jan. 16, at the age of 76. He joined the department in June 1971 as a member of Engine Co. 5 where he served as firefighter and Company Treasurer. He then dedicated the bulk of his tenure serving as treasurer for every aspect of the department, including the department itself, the Levittown Fire District and the Fireman’s Benevolent Association. After completing those terms, he continued as an active member of his company and the John “Jack” Sager department for a total of 50 years.

used a mesh screen to see if they could separate the solutions. This resulted in “jelly beads.” When the experiment was completed, the students applied what they learned and discovered that they created a chemical reaction. The engaging experiment was a great way to put their knowledge of matter to the test.

Legislators Join Vaccine Registry Efforts, Want More Focus On Vaccinating Seniors

he Nassau County Legislative Majority recently joined the growing number of public officials across the state calling for the establishment of a vaccine pre-registration system to help ease the nightmarish sign-up conditions that hundreds of thousands of residents are currently experiencing. The lawmakers emphasized the importance a new registry would have, particularly for seniors who are among the most susceptible to the dangers posed by the deadly virus.

“The state’s vaccination program is failing and as more individuals become eligible, it’s creating an even bigger risk to our most vulnerable citizens,” Presiding Officer Richard Nicolello said. “With limited supplies and a mad scramble among millions of New Yorkers trying to obtain an appointment dealing with shifting rules, overloaded websites and interminable waits on the phone, the current system is

The solution that’s gaining support from both sides of the political aisle is a universal pre-registration program, a method that is being utilized in New Jersey, Illinois, California and Florida that allows eligible applicants to fill out the necessary paperwork in advance and then get notified when an appointment is available.

“The phones in our office have been ringing constantly

from frustrated residents complaining about the difficulties with making an appointment for the vaccine,” Nassau County Legislator Denise Ford said. “While the range of callers covers the gamut of age groups, the majority are from seniors who are having the most trouble navigating the system.

on getting more of our older population vaccinated and at a faster rate. Hopefully she will see the merits of acting quickly on both fronts.”

Nicolello, Ford and the Majority Delegation believe such a program should go even further and collect enough information in the database to identify and prioritize those most at risk, like seniors for example, so that they can get a speedy appointment as doses arrive. They also recommended that more sites be established in Nassau to treat the older population, including the creation of additional mobile units that can visit senior centers or other locations where seniors reside or can easily travel to.

While the numbers continue to improve, Long Island’s COVID-19 positivity rate remains among the highest in the state. Demographically, Nassau has a higher percentage of seniors than in most regions statewide and throughout the country as well.

To further improve the vaccine distribution process, Nassau Legislators recently asked the state to open a mass vaccination site at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum similar to the sites at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field where thousands are being vaccinated daily.

“The Nassau Coliseum is an ideal location with easy access and plenty of space and parking to accommodate staffing and provide the necessary social distancing protocols,” Nicolello said. “Now, is the perfect time to get this location prepared so as the supply of doses increases we are ready to vaccinate larger numbers of individuals. So far our outreach to the governor has fallen on deaf ears but we haven’t given up and will continue our efforts to bring this to fruition along with the vaccine registry and increased vaccine availability for our seniors.”

Syosset Students Win Art, Writing Awards Thirty-four Syosset students won an overall 117 awards in the 2021 Scholastic Arts and Writing Awards Regional Competition. Students were awarded gold keys, silver keys and honorable mentions for their art and writing pieces submitted in 28 categories.

Gold Key pieces are automatically considered for national awards, which will be announced in March. Many of Syosset’s students received numerous individual awards over multiple categories,

with several students earning awards in both art and writing categories.

Junior Caroline Zhu and Sophomore Sabrina Guo each earned an impressive listing of awards in the Art and Writing divisions, respectively. Zhu earned a total of 14 awards for her submissions in art, including three gold keys, seven silver keys and three honorable mentions. Preservation Grant For Historic House Awarded

T

he North Shore Land Alliance is honored to have been awarded a grant through the Preservation League of New York State’s Technical Assistance Grant Program (TAG) that will help fund an engineering and structural analysis of the Tavern House (pictured). This historic structure is located on the Humes Preserve in Mill Neck and will become the Land Alliance’s new headquarters in the near future. The building will also provide universal access to the adjacent John P. Humes Japanese Stroll Garden as well as public programming and meeting space.

The Tavern House was likely constructed in the mid-1700s. Over the course of several centuries, this quaint, shingled home with a traditional gable roof passed through multiple owners and was likely used as a tavern or inn, farmhand quarters, guest cottage and summer home. Inns and taverns were quite prevalent during the 19th century on Long Island and were crucial to the settlement of New York State. In 2015 the North Shore Land Alliance acquired 28 acres of the Humes estate including the Tavern House for information about the Preservation conservation purposes.

Mineola Senior Shines Bright Inside And Outside The Classroom

M

ineola High School is highlighting one of its seniors, Wenny Cheng, for her achievements inside and outside of the classroom. Cheng has been an active member of the Mineola school community throughout her whole life. She is a part of the track and field team, a National Honor Society member and is a tutor for the high school’s Student Service Center. Through her involvement in extracurriculars, Cheng has made it a priority to give back to her community. Her commitment to helping others shines through in all that she does.

This past March is when Cheng launched her first website with the intention of helping peers throughout the pandemic. She realized many students were unable to visit prospective colleges due to campuses closing. That’s what gave Cheng the inspiration to found Virtual College Help, a website with interviews from college students attending more than 80 American universities, to help high school students gain insight to student life. Since its start, her website has received more than 14,000 views worldwide.

“I feel a responsibility to help others during this hard time,” Cheng said.

The success of Virtual College Help led to Cheng’s creation of a free, tutoring website. She offers virtual help to students around the nation in the STEM subjects, exam prep and even guides high school students through the financial aid process. Being a low-income, first-generation college student herself, Cheng says financial aid and college applications were an initial challenge for her. She did not want her peers in the same boat to go through this blindly, which is why she is offering this free, accessible service.

Cheng has excelled in the classroom throughout her time in the Mineola Union Free School District.

She says her experience growing up with parents who do not speak English and have faced financial struggles, inspired her to accomplish her goals.

“I see my parents work extremely hard and since I was in elementary school they always said, ‘As long as you work hard in school and achieve academically, you will change your life forever,’” Cheng said.

Mineola Man Arrested In Rapper Nicki Minaj’s Father’s Hit And Run Death

honored in multiple scholarship programs. She was one of 1,609 students from across the nation to be named a Coca-Cola Scholar Semifinalist. This scholarship program recognizes high school students who are dedicated to leadership, service and action that positively benefits others. Most recently, Cheng was announced as one of 496 semifinalists in the Cooke College Scholarship program, which awards high-achieving high school seniors who face financial need.

In addition, she is a quarterfinalist in the Elks Most Valuable Student scholarship competition.

Next year, Cheng will be attending the University of Pennsylvania on a full-ride scholarship. She plans to major in chemistry and carry out her altruistic nature by becoming a professor or teacher, while conducting independent research. She also notes that she loves computer science, thanks to the classes at Mineola High School, and is thinking about adding that as a double major.

Cheng says she wouldn’t be the person she is without being a Mineola student. She says her time in the district has helped shape her and thanks Mineola for her experiences.

“Mineola doesn’t have any boundaries for you, they allow you to explore and try out anything you want. All of the teachers are very supportive and always stick with you through your failures and successes,” she said.

An arrest was made last week in the hit and run death of rapper Nicki Minaj’s father who was walking along the roadway on Roslyn Road and Raff Avenue in Mineola.

The hit and run incident happened on Friday, Feb. 12 at 6:15 p.m.

According to Homicide Squad detectives, while walking in the roadway on Roslyn Road at the intersection of Raff Avenue, 64-year-old Robert Maraj was struck by a northbound vehicle that left the scene of the accident. Maraj was transported to an area hospital and was pronounced deceased by a hospital physician on Feb. 13.

A few days later, 70-year-old Charles Polevich of Mineola turned himself in to police. The vehicle involved in the hit and run death was a white 1992 Volvo Series 740 Stationwagon.

Polevich is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with a fatality and tampering with evidence.

“He got out of the car and he looked at the deceased, got into his car and made the conscious decision to leave instead of dialing 911 or call for an ambulance for the man,” Nassau County Police Lt. Stephen Fitzpatrick said at a press conference.

According to police, Polevich, who also has a residence in Guam, does not have any criminal history or any driving license history.

“Our detectives were scouring the neighborhood for video surveillance tracking that vehicle,” Fitzpatrick said.

“The vehicle is an older model, so it was distinctive. We were able to track that vehicle prior to the accident and after the accident, and we kind of

tracked it right to his house.”

Polevich allegedly hid his vehicle from being found by police, who according to Fitzpatrick have been in constant contact with Maraj’s family.

Maraj’s daughter Nicki Minaj, whose real name is Onika Maraj, has won numerous awards, including six American Music Awards, 10 BET Awards, seven BET Hip Hop Awards, four Billboard Music Awards, five MTV Video Music Awards, six MTV Europe Music Awards, two People’s Choice Awards, one Soul Train Music Award, and more.

Polevich was arraigned in Mineola on Feb. 17.

This past Monday, the MineolaGarden City Rotary Club and guests gathered on Zoom to greet several senior leaders of Rotary’s Youth Leadership team RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) program.

Several of the senior leaders reported on how RYLA is surviving and thriving during the pandemic. Our club supports and sponsors the worldwide (RYLA) program and its mission. Run by students for students, RYLA is an intensive leadership experience organized by Rotary clubs and districts where kids can develop their skills as leaders and build their confidence while having fun.

Begun in Australia in 1971, RYLA has expanded across the globe. Its mission is to teach our future leaders how to handle obstacles they will face in the real world. RYLA participants learn the values and benefits of leadership, motivation, goal setting and decision making while developing confidence and self-esteem.

Past RYLA students have spoken of how the RYLA experience has helped them to learn how to exchange ideas and work together while having fun. Many have developed lasting friendships and say they have learned lessons in life they could not have

experienced anywhere else.

Traditionally, high school sophomores throughout our District 7255 apply for Spring RYLA in Riverhead. Summer RYLA is a two-week away conference.

Our club encourages participation from sophomores from both Garden City and Mineola high schools. Erin Leary Breaks Scoring Record

he Carle Place School District’s athletic department congratulated girls’ varsity basketball senior captain Erin Leary for passing Jenna McLaughlin’s all-time scoring record of 1,177 points. Leary broke the record on Feb. 11 in a win over Oyster Bay. As of press time, Leary has a total of 1,210 points.

Leary scored her 1,000th point last Jan. 27 as a junior. Both McLaughlin (Class of 2005) and Abigail Selhorn (Class of 2019) passed the milestones in their senior year.

A five-year starter, Leary has been part of five consecutive Nassau County and three straight Long Island Class B championship teams.

In 2017, as an eighth-grader, Leary scored what was first ruled a

three-pointer to send the Long Island championship game against Mattituck into overtime. But the call was reversed and the Frogs lost a 49-47 heartbreaker.

She netted a game-leading 22 points in the 2018 Nassau County B final against Oyster Bay. Twelve of her points came in the pivotal fourth quarter of a 59-46 win. She added 11 in the Long Island final win over Mattituck as the Frogs avenged the previous year’s loss.

In 2019, Leary scored 11 as the Frogs beat Cold Spring Harbor in the B finals, netted 18 to lead Carle Place over East Rockaway in the Nassau Small Schools title tilt, and scored a game-leading 21 (14 in the first quarter) as Carle Place crushed Mattituck 66-25 in the Long Island championship game.

Last season, the Frogs had another smooth ride to the title, beating Friends Academy in the Class B championship game behind Leary’s 20. She dropped another 26 as Carle Place topped East Rockaway in the BC title game, and netted 14 (while sister Amanda poured in 29) in a 70-42 Long Island championship romp over Port Jefferson.

The Frogs were denied advancing further in the state championship by the pandemic shutdown.

At press time, Carle Place has a 4-0 mark in Nassau Conference BC-2, winning by an average of 40 points per contest.

Leary has averaged 14 points per game while sister Amanda (a junior) leads the team with a 17.3 average and sister Caitlin (a freshman) is contributing 11.3 ppg.

They Craft Cards For Veterans Cherry Lane Elementary School students showed their appreciation to local veterans by crafting Valentine’s Day cards.

Cherry Lane Elementary School kindergarten teacher Amanda Tavares coordinated a schoolwide activity, where students made heartfelt Valentine’s Day cards for Nassau County’s Valentine’s Day for Veterans program. The school crafted 203 cards, which will be distributed to veterans throughout the county.

This was a great opportunity for students to learn about the sacrifices veterans make to keep the country safe, while also strengthening their writing skills. In addition, they discussed the importance of giving thanks to veterans so that they know they are appreciated.

Summer Arts Camp On Horizon

The village will hold an open house for its Summer Arts Camp, sponsored by its recreation department in cooperation with Westbury Arts. “The camp is designed for children grades 1-8 who have an interest in the arts and enjoy exploring their creativity and self-expression,” reads a press release. “The program will present an arts-driven curriculum that will include visual arts, dance, drama, music and visiting artist workshops.”

Cavallaro lamented that police enforcement was lacking, and hoped that he could get the county’s law enforcement to take a more aggressive approach against illegal fireworks.

On March 4, the village trustees will hold public hearings on several issues.

Topping the list is a total rewriting of Chapter 101 of the village code, formerly titled “Circuses, Carnivals, Rodeos and Other Exhibitions,” to be renamed “Block Parties, Exhibitions, Fireworks and Other Special Events.”

The legislative intent is to establish “standards for the issuance of a permit for such events.”

Among the provisions of the code is a total prohibition of fireworks within

the village’s jurisdiction “except as part of a feast, festival or other exhibition, and the applicant for such feast, festival or exhibition has obtained permission from the board of trustees for fireworks as a part the application.”

Violating the code carries a fine of between $1,000 and $2,500, and no more than 15 days in jail. It gives judges some leeway, but “ the fine shall be not less than $250 nor more than $500 for a first offense, and not less than $500 nor more than $1,000 for a subsequent offense.”

Other hearings involve amending the vehicle and traffic code (including a ban on double parking) and allowing homeowners to trim village-owned trees fronting their house.

The project was announced in early November with much fanfare at the Nassau County Museum of Art. Some residents were able to attend in person, while the majority were listening in on Zoom without the ability to comment or speak. The presentation was well orchestrated, with the mayor of Roslyn Harbor, Sandy Quentzel, introducing Joe Graziose, the Executive VP of Residential Development at RXR. It was clear that they have a good relationship, and have spent time creating a plan that would work for some of the residents of Roslyn Harbor.

The glitzy presentation, however, did not acknowledge the impact it will have on the surrounding community.

There was no mention of the

impact on taxpayers who will see their property values drop significantly as a result of the project in its current iteration.

There was no discussion of how the development will interact with its surrounding environment. Over 180+ new residents will have a serious impact on our stormwater catch basins. Moreover, RXR is proposing placing a new road at the already busy three-way intersection of Glen Cove Avenue and Back Road.

We can expect increased carbon emissions along with significantly more traffic at this critical intersection.

That intersection isn’t able to handle the current traffic, which includes all traffic from the north, a Nassau County bus line, two school district buses, cars and walker going to the train station, The meeting had no discussion about wildlife conservation for the many animals that currently roam

the land. Last, the presenters failed to mention the loss of the beautiful sunset, which Roslyn Harbor and Glen Head residents will no longer see each night because their view will be obstructed by a five-story manor house.

During the presentation, a resident who was listening in on Zoom posted in the comment sections, “You know, we have neighbors who live on Glen Cove Avenue.” It is clear that RXR has made a conscious decision to build its access road along the less affluent side of the Engineers Club, along Glen Cove Avenue, so as not to upset the more affluent residents of Roslyn Harbor at the other end of the club. Community is defined by a feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.

Bryant Avenue is a busy artery that runs through Roslyn Harbor and connects the village of Roslyn, on one end, to Glen Head and the peninsula of Glen Cove on the other. Many residents use it to walk their dogs, take a jog or go for a stroll. It is a beautiful tree-lined street with houses that date back to the 1800s nestled among other luxurious homes that line the Engineers Country Club Golf Course. As it transitions into Glen Cove Avenue by the Greenvale LIRR station, the homes drop in price, but the homeowners have no less pride in their community and value their quality of life every bit as much.

Vaccine Distribution Has To Get Better The state’s vaccination program is failing our most vulnerable residents. Our medical professionals have known since the beginning that COVID-19 is more likely to cause severe illness and death in the elderly and those with underlying conditions.

Yet with millions eligible for the vaccine and a limited number of doses available, there is an ongoing mad scramble to obtain appointment, with shifting rules and overloaded websites and call-in numbers. Seniors in particular have had difficulty navigating the system. The

result is that those who are most vulnerable often cannot get the vaccine they desperately need.

I have joined with colleagues on both sides of the aisle and across the state to call for a pre-registration system, such as is used in New Jersey, Illinois, California and Florida. Residents should be able to enter their contact information with vital statistics such as age, occupation and underlying conditions. The state and/or local government can then use the database to identify and prioritize those most at risk so that they can get an early appointment.

I am also advocating that the state open a mass vaccination site at the Nassau

Veterans Memorial Coliseum similar to the sites at Yankee Stadium and Citi Field, where thousands are being vaccinated every day.

While the numbers are improving, Long Island’s positivity rate has been the highest in the state for weeks.

Moreover, demographically Nassau County has a higher percentage of seniors than in other regions in our state and country.

A mass vaccination site at the Nassau Coliseum makes perfect sense. The location is ideal with easy access and plenty of space and parking to

accommodate staffing and provide the necessary protocols to maintain safe social distancing.

As the supply of doses begins to increase, the site could also help handle larger amounts of individuals daily.

We must do more to protect our residents, including our most vulnerable. These common sense measures will more quickly reduce the numbers of serious illness and assist our county and region to emerge from the pandemic.

I am praying for her recovery, but still worry. Any advice?”

We had a long receiving line on the High Holy Days and when the people went through, some of them would shake hands with me and say: “How are you?” And just to see what would happen, I said: “Fine, thank you. I just came back from the moon.”

The contest is sponsored by the New York State Art Teachers Association. Third grader Mia Reyes was selected as the winner for her piece based on this year’s theme, “Art Connects Us.” She was one of only four top finishers in the state— an overall winner and one each at the elementary, middle and high school level. Great Neck resident Erin Lipinsky will once more be “Freezin’ for a Reason” at the 17th annual Town of North Hempstead Polar Plunge. Last year, Lipinsky raised $16,000, making him the top individual fundraiser of the event. This year will be Lipinsky’s seventh plunge and his goal is to break last year’s record. Fifth graders at Dutch Lane Elementary School in Hicksville are bringing the classroom outside as part of a science experiment.

During the space systems unit, teacher Stephanie Sullo engaged her students in a lesson that explored the length and positions of shadows, depending on the position of the sun in the sky. Students were given a cardboard circle, a piece of aluminum foil and strips of masking tape to build a structure. They used the structure to collect data about how different angles of sunlight create different shadows. The lesson gave students the opportunity to explore a new concept while discovering new information through experimentation.

WE LOVE OUR PETS Pandemic Pets Primed For Anxiety

O

ver the past year, no doubt, families have added cats, dogs and other furry pets to their brood to cope with their own quarantine emptiness. The time has come when pets’ routines are now being altered and disrupted, from once all-day pampering, to solitude and loneliness. Dogs are pack animals; cats, not so much. Your cat will be thrilled when you finally get back to work on a regular basis. With your dog, sad to say, you are likely going to face some behavioral problems in response to being left alone for long stretches of the day. The sheer devastation of missing you for even 15 minutes while you try to take a shower is enough to drive a dog mad.

We spoke with Courtney Sullivan, a pet behavior training manager at North Shore Animal League America in Port Washington about the signs of separation anxiety, why it happens and how to address the behaviors.

Here’s what she had to say:

Q A

What are the signs of behavior that results from separation anxiety?

Mild signs of separation anxiety include whining, panting, pacing, excessive salivation and scratching at doors and walls to escape confinement. If the dog is crated, they may begin to develop “cage nose” from pushing their nose against the cage in an attempt to get out. If the owner begins to observe this behavior and doesn’t take steps to remedy it, they can have a severely anxious dog that will have difficulty trying to settle or relax. The dog can become so fixated on the owner leaving that they’ll ignore dog enrichment items (toys, treats) you leave for them. If left unchecked, the dog can develop severe

arvey William Jessum was born in Jamaica, New York on November 16th 1927. A child born into the Great Depression, Harvey was the middle of three, preceded in death by his older sister Ruth Helgeson and his younger brother Richard Jessum. Raising a family in Glen Cove, NY, Harvey worked as a middle school teacher in the public school system. He is survived by his three children, Maria Melkonoff, Denise Barth and John Jessum and by six grandchildren, Natalie, Dylan, Molly, Dustin, Emily and Sophia. Harvey lost his mother at the age of 8 and was raised by his sister Ruth and various Aunts and went on to serve in WWII as part of the occupation force in Germany and after his service, returned to complete his High School education, where he met and eventually married his first wife, Marilyn. Harvey was a master at marshalling neighborhood kids to help work around his house and left a wide path of friendship wherever he traveled. He biked extensively, remained active for most his life and could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. He settled in Santa Barbara, California 20 years ago declaring it the best place on Earth. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews. He was an avid lawn bowler, and he volunteered at the local food bank, and Santa Barbara Hospice. He also worked as a volunteer at the A. C. Postel Rose Garden, where he was able to indulge his passion of gardening.

According to detectives, while attempting to cross in front of 1 Commercial Ave., a 70-year-old male was struck by a 2006 Toyota 4-Runner traveling eastbound. As a result of the collision, the pedestrian suffered multiple trauma injuries to his body and was transported to an area hospital.

The male driver, 50, remained at the scene. The vehicle went through a

brake and safety check. The investigation is ongoing.

According to detectives, police responded to a residence on Morris Drive for a 26-year-old male victim who was involved in a physical altercation and was choked and stabbed by a male subject. A description of the subject was given and officers located defendant Michael Owoo, 26, and was placed under arrest without further incident. The victim suffered multiple lacerations to his head, face and hand and was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment.

Owoo had a bruised lip and was also transported to a nearby hospital for assessment and treatment.

Owoo is charged with second-degree assault, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal obstruction of breathing/ blood circulation.

He was arraigned on Feb. 16 in Mineola.
