Mineola High School Announces Valedictorian And Salutatorian

T

he Mineola School District congratulates Julia Perrino and Serena Koshy for being named Mineola High School’s Class of 2021 valedictorian and salutatorian respectively.

Perrino is involved in many extracurricular activities including the Student Political Action and Debate Club, the Key Club, World Language Club and Science Bowl Club. She is also an active member of the marching band, jazz band and pep band. Most notably, Perrino was honored with an Excellence in Marching Band award and a Band Achievement award.

Salutatorian Serena Koshy is an active and accomplished member of the Mineola High School community. Koshy has played on the varsity soccer and basketball teams and is a member of the Athletes Helping Athletes club.

County Executive Launches Campaign To Build Confidence In COVID-19 Vaccine

assau County Executive Laura Curran recently announced a public awareness campaign to promote confidence and build preparedness in Nassau County for COVID-19 vaccines, which could begin reaching residents this week. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s leading infectious disease expert has said COVID-19 will continue to disrupt our everyday lives unless an overwhelming majority of people take the vaccine. However, polls show as many as half of Americans have reservations about getting vaccinated.

This past Friday, the FDA gave an emergency use authorization (EUA) to Pfizer and BioNTech’s vaccine. Over the weekend, each state received a shipment of the vaccine with New York receiving 170,000 doses, which is reserved for front line workers and nursing home residents who can be vaccinated starting this week. Long Island is set to receive 26,500 doses of the Pfizer vaccine. If Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine is given an EUA another 360,000 doses of the vaccine will be sent to New York.

“Medical experts are predicting that the numbers [of infections] will get higher as winter continues,” Curran said. “Until we do have that vaccine, I urge residents to stick with those common sense precautions that we know work. We’ve heard it a million times— the mask, washing of the hands and social distancing. If everyone did that throughout this holiday season, we would see those numbers go down.”

In order for life to get back to normal, medical experts have estimated that 75 to 85 percent of the public need to take the vaccine. Dr. Fauci said that when that number is reached, a community has an umbrella of protection where community spread will be very low, and urged the importance of getting vaccinated. However, lots of people are hesitant to take the vaccine in fear that it was rushed and unsafe.

Curran said she understands people’s hesitancy.

“Everybody wants to know about the vaccines,” she said. “We have the best collection of hospital systems in the country in Nassau. I’ve been

Town Welcomes New Virus Test Site

o prove how easy and painless the process was, Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino took the nasal swab test in front of a group of reporters and videographers recently.

He was the “first patient” at UrgentWay, an urgent care group that reopened its Hicksville office to handle the increased demand for COVID-19 tests.

“I will get a test right now in front of you to encourage you to do the same and to show you it’s not painful, but it could save your life,” the supervisor had said before sitting down to get swabbed.

“And it’s free,” clinic primary care physician Dr. Faika Khan stated.

“I never appreciated being scraped so much,” Saladino said to laughter.

“But that’s for a good and noble cause,” Khan rejoined.

“The reality is, the numbers on COVID-19 are getting worse and it’s very concerning,” Saladino said at a press conference to reopen the center.

“So to have a facility where residents can come and conveniently get tested, another facility, will reduce lines for testing. And that’s a good thing for residents, especially as COVID-19 numbers begin to spike again. We’re seeing that second wave. We’re very concerned.”

UrgentWay, which runs care centers in Manhattan, the Bronx and Hempstead, had closed its Hicksville office at the beginning of the pandemic. Dr. Khan said it had done more than 50,000 COVID-19 tests at its other facilities and the Hicksville clinic could handle 100 test per day.

Saladino called Urgent Way “a tremendous ally in the fight against COVID-19. One of the best tools for fighting this pandemic is a rigorous and extensive network of testing sites.”

He added, “In the arsenal, it’s critical to have masks, it’s critical to have information and especially test results because that leads to the quarantining and people can stay separated and those are the best protections as we begin this second wave of this horrendous pandemic.”

Saladino noted that people have reported waiting on lines for hours to get tested.

“So we need more facilities to open up,” Saladino said. “Facilities with highly-qualified medical personnel, truly caring people. The kind of people here running UrgentWay.”

“It’s a difficult time, but we must all take precautionary measures to keep ourselves and our family safe,” Khan said. “Every action counts when it comes to protecting ourselves and our loved ones from coronavirus. Stay home. Wear masks. And if you’re out, please maintain social distancing.”

The clinic will provide PCR, rapid and antibody testing.

“It is recommended that we should get PCR as opposed to the rapid [antigen] test,” Khan observed, adding the rapid test “has got a higher sensitivity, so it’s a good test to rule in [a positive case], but not to rule out. So if you are negative, you are not truly negative. The PCR test takes longer [to get the results], but it’s the more accurate way to rule out a patient with COVID-19.”

Saladino was joined by Councilwoman Vicki Walsh and Receiver of Taxes Jeffrey Pravato. He singled out John Posner of Sunrise Labs, and Khan said the relationship with the labs has been simplified and made “effortless.”

“We really appreciate your opening,” Saladino told Khan. “You are a shining light at holiday time. You will continue to have our encouragement and help.

Coat and Clothing Drive Held To Benefit Great Neck Schools Clothing Pantry T he Sephardic Heritage Alliance, Inc. (SHAI) recently hosted its second Clothing and Coat Drive to benefit the Great Neck Public Schools clothing pantry. A steady stream of donors drove up, masked, to drop off their bagged donations.

United Parent Teacher Council, the umbrella organization of parent teacher organizations, co-promoted the drive to its entire membership.

SHAI Board members Mike Delafraz, Tania Eshaghoff-Freidberg, Jacqueline Harounian, Parisa Sarraf, Rebecca Sassouni, Sophie Sassouni and Shahruz Shahery helped sort the enormous amount of donated items.

In a vivid Great Neck snapshot, donors included individuals from every zip code on the peninsula, from various faith and ethnic groups, of all ages. One eighth grader who accompanied his mother to drop off donations expressed surprise that such a drive was necessary, stating “people in Great Neck don’t need help.” He was informed that approximately one fifth of the students enrolled in the Great Neck Public Schools are food-insecure and many local families struggle financially, particularly this pandemic year.

The Great Neck Public Schools clothing pantry was established in 2018. The idea was first discussed among the Social Work team and building administrators at Saddle Rock and has the support of district administration. Staff members volunteer to sort through clothing

donations and organize the Pantry, which is housed in a small storage room at Saddle Rock School. In her capacity as a Trustee of the schools, SHAI president Rebecca Sassouni toured the Saddle Rock school with Principal Luci Bradley back in 2018.

When they stopped at the nascent clothing pantry, an idea was born.

Established in 1992, SHAI has an extensive history of clothing, blood, bone marrow, voter registration drives, as well as communal programming, cultural and educational initiatives. Previous drives designated clothes for organizations outside of Great Neck. Last year, SHAI and UPTC, the united parent teacher council, co promoted a coat and clothing drive which was held at the SHAI office on Middle Neck Road.

It yielded more than 100 children’s coats and hundreds of apparel items for kids. The surplus of donations from the Great Neck community was so generous that other nonprofit organizations were invited to come to the office to select items for their beneficiaries all over New York.

This pandemic year, SHAI reached out to Beautiful Memories Gemach founder Mark Krieger who graciously offered to host the Coat and Clothing Drive at his larger space. (“Gemach” is a contraction of the Hebrew words, “gemilut chassidim” which translate as “acts of loving kindness,such as those the pantry facilitates.)

Remaining adult items remained at the gemach pantry for distribution to adults with learning disabilities, veterans, homeless, dress for success, and many other organizations and individuals.

Memories Of A Misspent Youth Massapequa columnist releases publishing debut

T

he late English novelist Graham Greene once said, “There is always one moment in childhood when the door opens and lets the future in.” For Anton Media Group columnist Paul DiScalfani, that moment was a trip out to California in 1978 as a 21-year-old seeking adventure along with cousin Sal “The Catman” Petrillo and close friend Bruce “Mr. B” Oehler.

The memorable journey was captured in Burning Through The West Coast, DiSclafani’s recently released publishing debut. DiSclafani, whose nickname is Disco, wound up taking a 10-day sojourn to the Left Coast, where the hapless trio of self-described “hammerheads” brought their East Coast hedonism to the Golden State in what comes off like a lower-key version of a Cheech & Chong movie. It all added up to the threesome drinking copious amounts of beer, smoking a lot of weed and trying to hook up with the fairer sex at every turn. Their exploits culminated with the trio scoring tickets to attend The Tonight Show and

book,” DiSclafani explained. “At the Long Island Writers Club meeting, I met a woman named Stephanie Larkin who was the main speaker that night. We started talking about writing and she said to go out and write the book for myself, my friends and family. I realized that I had never put the whole thing down on paper before.”

The Brooklyn native got started on his project in the middle of March, right when the pandemic siege began.

While DiSclafani may have told the story countless times, capturing a straightforward telling of this tale from start to finish proved to be considerably more challenging.

Reaching out to Petrillo and Oehler proved to be frustrating as both traveling companion had trouble remembering specific details. Luckily, DiSclafani remembered he had a picture archive to draw from.

“The thing that helped me was that I actually had a photo album from that trip,” the columnist said. “I was never one to do anything with my pictures.

Normally, I would just throw them in a box. For some reason on this particular trip, I not only organized all the pictures, but I wrote little blurbs about each one of them. It really helped me put the entire timeline together.

And for some reason, I kept some of the receipts for places like [The Baja Motel] or our boarding passes. I never save any of that stuff. So I was able to piece together the whole thing and put it together into what I thought was a pretty good narrative.”

COVID-19’s stay-at-home orders proved to be a Godsend for DiSclafani, as it provide him with plenty of time to focus on writing his book, during a timespan that stretched from March right through July. By mid-September, the manuscript had been edited and cover art had been picked out. With the book finally having hit the shelves, DiSclafani has gotten positive feedback from his fellow travelers, friends and family, even though his mother did ask, “‘You know, what is all this talk about marijuana?” That said, the award-winning columnist is eager to write a follow-up while enjoying the current ride.

“It was such a joy to do,” DiSclafani said.

“For someone like me, I’m not really writing books to make money out of them. It’s nice to make money, but what I’m looking to do is share the story with people I know. You know what my dream has always been? When I used to work in the city, I’d take the Long Island Rail Road every day and then take the subway. I’d see people reading books and used to think how great it would be to see some total stranger reading my book. That’s why I always wanted to write a book.”

he Mineola School District congratulates Julia Perrino and Serena Koshy for being named Mineola High School’s Class of 2021 valedictorian and salutatorian respectively. The designations Perrino and Koshy received are based on their GPA through 11th grade.

Perrino is involved in many extracurricular activities including the Student Political Action and Debate Club, the Key Club, World Language Club and Science Bowl Club. She is also an active member of the marching band, jazz band and pep band.

Most notably, Perrino was honored with an Excellence in Marching Band award and a Band Achievement award.

Perrino’s academic achievements have earned her various honors throughout her time at Mineola High School. She was named to the Junior National Honor Society, National Honor Society, Music Honor Society, and selected to participate in the Institute for Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students.

Garden City Mayor Helps Distribute PPE To Local Businesses

G

arden City Mayor Theresa Trouvé helped distribute Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits to local businesses in downtown Garden City on Friday, Dec. 4.

The village received approximately 50 boxes of PPE kits from Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin’s office in late November and worked with the Garden City Chamber of Commerce to identify businesses within the village that had a need for PPE. Domenick Stanco, deputy superintendent of the Department of Public Works, and Street Department employee Frank Brusack, assisted the mayor.

A day earlier, Hempstead Town Clerk Kate Murray delivered approximately 10,000 face masks to the village’s first responders in the police and fire departments. Each PPE kit comes fully equipped

with the necessities needed to follow appropriate COVID-19 protocols: a contactless infrared digital thermometer; five face shields; eight boxes of 50 three-ply masks; two boxes of 100 pairs of powder-free vinyl gloves; two gallons of hand sanitizer with a spray pump; a canister of 1,500 sanitizing wipes.

This initiative is made possible through funding from the federal CARES (Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security) Act. President Donald Trump signed the $2.2 trillion stimulus bill into law on March 27 in response to the economic fallout of the pandemic. Garden City was just awarded a $221,000 reimbursement grant through the CARES Act to help offset COVID-19 related expenditures.

Mayor Trouvé learned about the CARES ACT help as

a result of her membership in Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin’s weekly mayors’ meetings.

“We were all provided with a generous number of PPE boxes,” Trouvé said. “Dennis Donnelly, executive director of the Chamber of Commerce, provided us with a list of merchants who could put these free materials to good use, and Karen Altman, village clerk, worked out the details.

It was a pleasure to visit the shops and restaurants to greet these dedicated people. Public Works Deputy Superintendent Domenick Stanco, Frank Brusack, a Street Department employee, and I were pleased to bring these boxes of joy out to our Business District to celebrate this joyful Yuletide season. Police Report Dec. 2 Two vehicles were reported stolen from the driveway of an Adams Street residence. Upon activation of both vehicles’ tracking systems, officers recovered them in Brooklyn.

A traffic investigation on Franklin Avenue resulted in the arrest of a 37-year-old motorist for possession of a forged out-of-state registration, uninspected vehicle, unregistered vehicle, and uninsured vehicle.

Officers responded to the Residence Inn to investigate a report of a male subject preventing his ex-girlfriend from calling the police after

he harassed and threatened to harm her and her child.

Upon investigation, detectives located the 32-year-old male subject and arrested him for criminal mischief, harassment, and endangering the welfare of a child.

Garden City detectives tracked a vehicle reported stolen from a St. James Street South driveway to a Newark, NJ, commercial garage where it was recovered. The investigation is ongoing. .................

Dec. 5 Officers responded to Clinch Avenue and New Hyde Park Road where a vehicle overturned after striking a light pole and street signs.

Firefighters responded and extricated the operator from the vehicle. The 32-year-old operator was arrested for DWI. NYU transported the subject to a local hospital for injuries sustained from the accident.

Police Arrest Two For Stolen Vehicle, Gun Possession On Dec. 4, at 7:19 p.m., during a vehicle stop, the Glen Cove Police arrested two individuals for various charges including gun possession, and possession of a stolen vehicle. The driver of the vehicle, 22-year-old Jorge Santizo Lanuza of Inwood, was charged with multiple vehicle and traffic charges including aggravated unlicensed operation. Lanuza also had active Nassau County bench warrants for four counts of criminal possession of stolen property and burglary.

The 20-year-old passenger, Julian George Tasayco, of Glen Cove, was found to be in possession of a loaded handgun. Tasayco was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Upon further investigation the vehicle they were operating was found to be stolen from a dealership in Tampa, FL. Lanuza was also charged by police for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of an accident, and two counts of grand larceny 3rd degree.

School District Offers COVID-19 Testing To Community The Syosset School District has entered into a partnership with Mount Sinai South Nassau to provide a COVID-19 rapid test satellite location at the Syosset High School campus, located at 70 South Woods Rd. This partnership will provide a location for students, their immediate family members, and district staff members to obtain a rapid test. The satellite location tests will be by appointment-only.

Mount Sinai South Nassau will offer the Sofia SARS rapid COVID-19 antigen test, which has a higher degree of accuracy than many of the rapid tests currently in use, to members of the Syosset learning community, which includes district students and their immediate family and staff members.

Appointments will be available Monday through Friday between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Minors must have parental permission and be accompanied by an adult to be tested. Tests will be administered by a nurse under the direction of Mt. Sinai South Nassau and will take place in a drive-up format under a tent outside the school building. Sample evaluation will take place in an adjacent trailer and results will be available in about 15 minutes. The cost of the testing will be underwritten by the individual’s family health insurance and health data

The Department of Health’s “return to school” protocol requires students and staff members who show potential symptoms of COVID-19 to produce a copy of a negative test result before returning to school. The satellite testing location will provide a quick and convenient method for community members to obtain the test. Use of this testing site will be on a voluntary basis.

Fire Ravages New Cassel Warehouse

warehouse at 48 Urban Ave. in New Cassel was totally damaged after it caught fire shortly after 5 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 4.

Westbury Fire Department Chief Ken Gass Jr. was the commander on the scene as approximately 200 firefighters from numerous departments fought the blaze.

In an email, Gass said the fire was showing through the roof when he arrived on the scene. There was also heavy smoke.

He wrote, “The building eventually was fully involved in fire. The fire reached a ninth alarm and 20 departments responded to Westbury to assist with fire operations or coverage of the district. Seven tower ladders were put into operation as the fire was fought from the exterior and the building was a total loss. One Westbury member was treated for a minor injury at scene. The fire was brought under control in just under five hours and the two adjacent buildings were saved.”

According to the Nassau County Police Department Arson Bomb Squad, the Westbury firefighter “suffered minor smoke inhalation and

The release listed Tapemaker Sales Inc. as the operator of the building.

The website is no longer active, but another site with info on the business lists it as TapeMaker Supply Co. and it touts itself as veteran-owned. It supplies a lengthy list of products, including printer paper, specialty duct tape and even audio/video processing equipment and security cameras.

A note on the website states, “All of our products meet current electrical and or military specs and can

be used in military equipment or applications.”

The website listed two phone numbers. Only one number was in operation and a message was not returned. The listed email was no longer working.

According to the police, “In addition to the original building fire, four adjoining commercial buildings and a vehicle in the vicinity were also damaged. The fire appears non-suspicious at this time. The investigation is ongoing.”

A neighboring business owner told Anton Media Group that most activity occurred in the back of the building, where warehouse doors faced Kinkel Street.

Photos from the fire scene showed firefighters moving live poultry in cages from Westbury Live Poultry, an adjoining business, to safety.

Ira Trow, a fire investigator for T.J. Russo Consultants of Mineola told Anton Media Group he is investigating the fire for the Great American Insurance Company.

He could not confirm if Tapemaker was the company operating the firehouse. Information on the property owner could not be confirmed, The Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office did not respond to a phone call seeking comment.

The property is .459 acres and the office/warehouse building in the Town of North Hempstead’s industrial zone is 10,752 square feet. The property had a fair market value of $658,740 and school and general taxes were more than $44,000.

Elmhurst, Queens. In the mid-1940s she met her sweetheart, Walter, at the First Presbyterian Church of Newtown; they were married in 1956. Nora attended school to be a dental hygienist and eventually became a realtor, opening Nora Lofgren Realty Inc. in Westbury at the age of 67, a business she ran even until her final days.

Nora loved traveling, spending time with her friends, and, most of all, being with her family. “Oma” enjoyed spending time by the pool and on the boat in Jamesport with her two children, Gary and Christa; two outlaws, Jeanne and Scott; five grandchildren, Bryce, Brett, Hanna, Elena, and Liam; and one great-grandchild, Cordelia. The matriarch had a way of getting what she wanted, and so it was with her passing: despite COVID restrictions, she spent her final days surrounded by her family.

Nora will be dearly missed by her husband Walter, her family, and the many people throughout her life who counted her among their own families.

At this time, there are no arrangements for a funeral or memorial service though we hope to celebrate Nora’s memory when we can gather safely in person.

Hicksville Community Mourns Loss Of Ira Smitheimer

Former captain of the Hicksville Fire Department

n Monday, Dec. 1, the officers and members of Emergency Company 5 of the Hicksville Fire Department regret to announce the passing of ex-Captain Ira Smitheimer.

Smitheimer joined on March 21, 1972. His talents were immediately put into place as he was elected to serve as company secretary in 1974 and again in 1977. Smitheimer also served as department recording secretary. He was elected as 2nd Lieutenant 1976 and 1977, 1st Lieutenant in 1978 and subsequently would be elected as the 39th captain in 1979 and 1980.

During Smitheimer’s first year as captain the 1962 Mack C95 Fire Truck became mechanically unusable and he was instrumental in securing the use of the 1970 Maxim 1,000 gpm pumper in its place

until 1983. During Captain Smithiemer’s term in office, he led his members in taking part in a mock commuter train derailment that was staged by the Long Island Railroad.

The members converged on the scene on the overhead tracks just off East Barclay Street. The drill was unknown to the firefighters and was planned for two months.

The drill was staged to show areas in which the fire service needed improvement, such as manpower, equipment and methods of operation.

As captain, the Rescue Squad participated in the Lions Club new program, “Vial of Life,” which targeted senior citizens. As part of their program, the Lions Club and firefighters distributed free Vial of Life kits. The Vial of Life program was for the elderly, people who live alone and

people with medical problems. Information contained in the vial is a recorded medical history and their doctor’s contact information.

During his term, Smitheimer commanded his

members in several significant fires that included; • A fire at the law offices of Kantor, Blodnic, Vogel, Haber and Wolf.

• A blaze at the Pax Surface Chemical Co. located at 24 Max Ave., off Woodbury Road • There were three separate fires at the Empire Diner located at the intersection of West John Street and Jerusalem Avenue.

• An early morning blaze at the General Instrument Corp, 600 West John St. • On the day before Memorial Day, seven businesses were destroyed in a nine-hour fire at Color Mart paint store in the King Kullen shopping center at Newbridge and Old Country roads.

In February 1983, after 11 years, Smitheimer resigned

and moved out of the district.

He remained an honorary member of Company 5 and an Exempts member. He would continue to take part in monthly company meetings and social affairs of the company up to the time of his passing.

Through the help of so many, we were able to provide meals for 210 homebound seniors on Thanksgiving Day and the fixings for 30 local families to make their own meal—360 people in all.

We want to send a shout out to the children and parents of our community. Thank you kids and parents for raising such giving, reliable and good spirited children. At the Community Church of East Williston we have an annual Pumpkin Patch fundraiser. It takes a tremendous amount of work to orchestrate the

activity for a month.

We reached out to the surrounding schools and other churches asking for help. We got lots of help. The Mineola Junior High and High School, Wheatley schools, Herricks schools, St. Aidan’s Confirmation class, Corpus Christi Confirmation class—all helped. They unloaded the

Celebrating The Holidays During The Pandemic The holiday season is fully upon us, but this year’s celebrations will be unlike any we’ve ever experienced.

Typically, our calendars are full of events, whether they are parties with colleagues or friends, visits with the kids to meet Santa, festive holiday concerts or a variety of other joyous occasions. But with the pandemic surging, many of these well-loved traditions have been canceled.

It’s been a very difficult and unprecedented time in our history. People are tired of being cooped up at home; they’re exhausted from feeling afraid.

They miss being with friends and family. Bottom line: We all want our “normal” lives back—a perfectly understandable desire, especially this time of year.

While the pandemic and all the uncertainty has been extremely taxing on all of us, it’s even harder on our children. No birthday parties,

graduations, proms, playdates or vacations. Worries about the health of their loved ones.

Difficulty adapting to remote schooling. Financial insecurity. And around the holidays, the loss of family gatherings.

It’s a lot of trauma for youngsters to handle.

The good news is, as a parent or caregiver, you can take some concrete steps to help your kids cope with the losses and changes we face this season.

First, be sure to plan ahead for the holidays as a family so that you don’t have a sense of anxiety looming. Give everyone the chance to have input into the agenda, so they can become comfortable with the plans and work out their feelings. In a world that seems so unpredictable, let them know what they can count on.

Each family has its own comfort level in terms of what they deem safe and acceptable. When you, as the adult, have made those decisions, convey that plan to your children—for example, we can visit outdoors with Grandma and Grandpa, but only if we wear our masks and stay six feet apart. Knowing the rules is important, especially since other families may have rules that are different from your own.

Recognize that your kids are likely to feel sad, angry and disappointed, and let them express those emotions. If they

tell you some form of “this isn’t fair” or “this stinks” acknowledge that those feelings are normal and even healthy.

Also, while your parental instinct may be to focus on “fixing” the problem, that often isn’t what your children need.

Instead, focus on listening, validating and empathizing with them. This is also a good opportunity for you to model appropriate expression of feelings and healthy coping skills.

Schedule some zoom time with the relatives and friends you cannot be with in person this year. Of course, it’s not a replacement for a real hug, but it does allow for a genuine connection with the people your children love.

While many of our family traditions are on hold, this is a great time to create some new ones. Ask your kids for suggestions on new activities so they’ll feel a sense of ownership of the day. Some possibilities: a family hike, new

board game or a classic like charades, holiday crafts, photo albums, karaoke or baking for neighbors.

Final thought: While your children are experiencing a sense of loss, it may help them feel better to do something that helps others. Perhaps they can choose a charity to give their loose change to or make handmade thank you lawn signs or cards for frontline responders.

How The MTA Spends Federal Transit Administration Funding Transit agencies across the nation continue to lobby for a second round of $12 billion in CARE COVID-19 funding.

Hopes are growing that under President Joe Biden’s administration, there will be future action on this legislation.

Our New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) already received and completed spending $3.9 billion from the first round of this funding. It is a fair question to ask how the MTA is spending previously approved funding under active Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grants or status of pending grant applications for other available annual formula FTA funding that has yet to be approved.

The FTA annually provides $1.4 billion in capital grants to the MTA. This is accomplished under the FTA Transit Award Management System (known as “TrAMS”) used to award and manage federal grants. The MTA currently manages an active portfolio of federally funded capital improvement projects worth more than $12 billion.

Both de Blasio and Cuomo claim that they manage the most transparent administrations in history. How much of the information submitted to

the FTA is posted on the MTA agency web site?

The Loss Of A Friend, But Not Friendship

You stay in touch; you have the occasional BBQ or birthday celebration and you reminisce about the good times. At the end of the evening, you all agree that we must do this more often, but you never do.

That doesn’t mean you don’t care about each other anymore—far from it. It’s just that all those years ago, we were living and enjoying the same life together. We were traveling together, partying

and having way too much fun and adventure.

Now we have our own lives and our own families.

Unfortunately, you can’t be 24 forever.

Doug was a special person, not just the life of the party, he was the party. He was a huge influence in my life, and if you ever met him, you would never forget him. He was genuine and non-pretentious, treating strangers like friends and friends like family.

There wasn’t an evil bone in his body. He was carefree, dangerous and persuasive, with an infectious laugh. And boy, could he make us laugh.

He was one of a kind.

The first time I met him was on that Syracuse trip in the fall of 1978. We were driving up with his two sisters and their friend, whom we had picked up in Cortland on the way further north. He was in the student lounge, shooting pool with a friend.

Wearing a T-shirt under a leather jacket. Doug was sporting a flat, Irish driving hat on his head. When introduced, he shook my hand and handed me a beer without uttering a word. I’ll always remember him like that.

Sometime after the concert, we waited outside the arena while he took a quick trip into town, returning with two cases of beer and a couple of pizzas. When he returned, we immediately dove into the pizzas and grabbed a beer by the side of the road.

Just then, one of Springsteen’s tour buses emerged from the parking lot and parked across from us on the other side of the road.

Two of Springsteen’s band, Clarence Clemons and Danny Federici, leaned out of their windows and called us to bring them some pizza. We all instinctively ran over to the bus to talk to them for a few minutes and brought a few

slices with us.

When we returned, our beer was gone.

Instead of lamenting our loss (everything was closed after 1 a.m.), my new friend Doug just suggested we go to sleep early and get up at 6 a.m. when the liquor stores reopen.

I’m sad because I lost a friend, but I feel guilty that I didn’t get a chance to tell him how much he meant to me all these years. Friendships like this come along once in a lifetime. If you are lucky enough to have a lifelong “inner circle” of friends, hold them close. Let them know how much their friendship still means to you.

Rest in Peace, my friend.

I lost a good friend this week.

I’ve known him and his sisters for more than 40 years.

We’ve spent countless hours together since we first met in 1978 on our way to see a Bruce Springsteen concert in Syracuse. We tell very few stories while reminiscing about those carefree days that don’t mention his name in some way, shape or form.

He was part of my “inner circle” of friends. A tight-knit group that neither time nor distance could keep apart. Like many true friendships that develop, you drift in and out of each other’s lives over time.

But that doesn’t change your feelings for each other. When you do get together, it’s like time and space has stood still. You are transported instantly back to a time in your lives when these friends were not just part of your life. They were your life.

And then adult life gets in the way.

The College Board National Recognition Program create pathways to college for students from underrepresented communities. The program awards academic honors and connect students to universities and scholarship opportunities around the country.

Rocking The Road for A Cure (RTRFAC) recently hosted their 11th annual Motorcycle Run for Breast Cancer. CEO Dawn Frey and her team creatively navigated COVID restrictions to produce yet another memorable fundraising event. In lieu of the traditional motorcycle run through Queens, Nassau and Suffolk, a Poker Run— inclusive of social distancing and masks—through Nassau and Suffolk counties engaged 400 riders and 200 participants. The event commenced at Marjorie R. Post Community Park in Massapequa where pre-registered participants received masks, pins, and bandannas while others

registered at staggered registration intervals. Each next stop to draw the poker cards was revealed at registration and check ins. The final stop was at the Miracle Mile Harley Davidson who hosted an awesome after party. Live music was provided

The students learned about what an electric circuit is and were provided with materials to build a simple circuit of their own. The circuits had a battery and an electric current running through them that would light a small lightbulb. The fourth graders enjoyed putting together their circuit and seeing their success come to light.

Once again, the Hicksville-Jericho Rotary Club along with its community partners, made sure that the spirit of the season arrived at Kennedy Park. Unable to hold its full Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony due to the pandemic, the club continued its tradition of getting local organizations, community groups and elected officials to decorate the smaller trees along the path leading to the gazebo and train.

With the help of the Hicksville Fire Department, the large tree was decorated, wooden soldiers took their posts standing guard as Santa arrives

in Hicksville.

The first lighting of the tree took place on Saturday, Dec, 5 and will continue nightly through the new year. POLICE REPORT Narcotics Arrest In Massapequa

The Major Case Bureau detectives from the narcotics vice squad report the arrests of two individuals during an overdose investigation that occurred on Dec. 5 at 7:25 p.m. in Massapequa.

An investigation by the Long Island Heroin Taskforce into a fatal overdose of a Nassau County resident, led to the arrest of 45-year-old Robert Brinkley of Amityville and 57-year-old Felice Streeter of Wyandanch.

Narcotics/Vice Squad detectives placed the defendants under arrest without incident.

He earned 5 battle stars during campaigns in Normandy (landing with the 1ST Army), Northern France, Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge), Central Europe, and the Rhineland. He was wounded in action at the Moselle River Crossing and was awarded the Purple Heart.

Marcia also was a steadfast congregant at the Community Synagogue, involved in everything from Sisterhood meetings in the early 1960s to Torah study and Yiddish classes in 2020.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, civil servant and friend, Marcia loved the local community. In excellent health through this past September, she regularly strolled to the town dock after dinner to watch the sunset from the bench dedicated to her beloved husband Arthur.
