Glen Head Kicks Off Toys For Tots Donation

A

ndrew Lewin, a Glen Head resident and owner of Gotham Refining Chemical, was recently honored as a result of his generous donation to the Town of Oyster Bays’s Toys for Tots Drive, held annually in conjunction with the United States Marine Corps drive across the nation. The Toys for Tots Drive has continuously been a huge success in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year’s drive is especially crucial, as due to the coronavirus global pandemic, many more families than normal are feeling an undue financial burden.

COVID-19: A Surge Awaiting

assau County has seen a spike in infection rate starting in November, going from 1.6 percent daily positive rate on Nov. 1 to 3.3 percent on Nov. 21 and a 3.2 percent seven day rolling average as of Nov. 21. As cases rise in the area, families are also preparing for the holiday season with Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas and New Year’s Eve coming up. Those in the medical community are hoping the surge won’t be as bad as it was in the spring and acknowledge they are more prepared to handle hospitalizations than before.

“We’re preparing for the worst,” Dr. Bruce Hirsch, attending physician in infectious diseases at North Shore University Hospital, said. “Our hospital and a lot of the hospitals on Long Island were dealing with a frightening surge in March and then in April.

Many of us have a sense of really grim foreboding about what we’re experiencing right now. Although we don’t have many COVID patients and they seem to be not quite as sick as what we saw before, a lot of us are going around with this PTSD.” New York State has already taken action against the spike in cases and Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Wednesday, Nov. 11, that businesses will need to close by 10 p.m. starting Friday, Nov. 13, and implored New Yorkers to follow the guidelines the state has set in place. The new guidelines also includes a maximum of 10 non-household visitors to any home. Enforcing these guidelines has been relatively weak.

A few sheriffs in upstate-New York have already said they would not enforce Cuomo’s executive order, specifically during the holidays. A spokesperson for the Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) told Anton Media Group, “The NCPD will respond if notified of any violations of the governor’s executive order limiting gatherings to no more than 10 people. For their health and safety we will continue to educate residents and visitors on the COVID-19 restrictions.

If there are repeat offenders to this order, we will work with the Health Department and Fire Marshalls with regard to further enforcement.”

Several school districts on Long Island have already chosen to go full remote-learning as they saw an increase in cases within their community. Cuomo has stated that certain

communities on Long Island will potentially be designated yellow-zones if cases continue to increase.

On the North Shore of Long Island, a new drive-through rapid testing site was opened at the North Shore Hebrew Academy in Great Neck on Nov. 9 due to an increase in positivity rate throughout the area. This site was quickly moved to 600 Community Dr., Manhasset, starting Nov. 16 because of logistical issues of having a testing site at a school according to a spokesperson from the County Executive’s office.

“In partnership with New York State and Northwell, Nassau is expanding COVID-19 testing in Great Neck after a recent increase in infections,” Nassau County Executive Laura Curran said at the opening of the now-moved North Shore Hebrew Academy testing site. “Nassau County will continue to respond to micro-spikes—wherever they may pop up—with testing,

tracing and community outreach.”

Dozens of states around the country are currently reporting record hospitalizations right now, similar to what we saw in New York this past spring. As we enter the winter season, Nassau County hospitals are preparing for a surge that will stem from numerous causes.

Large gatherings from holiday parties that people will travel from out of state, not socially distance or employ mask wearing may be the most formidable.

“The holidays will lend to an environment that will exacerbate the problems of the spread of COVID,” Dr. Salvatore Pardo of Long Island Jewish Valley Stream Hospital said. “That time of year with all the holidays plus the need to be inside because of the weather certainly creates an environment where the spread of COVID will happen easier just for the traditions of gathering together, spending hours together indoors in formal settings.”

The explosion may not be seen right away, but within a week or two after a holiday, there is the potential of a surge.

“You know that COVID is passed around when people are fine,” Hirsch explained. “And then a week later they begin to develop illness and then weeks later we see people in the hospital and then weeks later we see increase of deaths.”

Pardo himself will not be having the same Thanksgiving his family usually has, he’s more than aware of the risks.

The concern is if other families in Nassau County will do the same.

“Every family has a different situation,” Pardo said. “People coming from out of town should be discouraged as mandated by New York State. New York State has also recommended gatherings of less than 10 people, even in a nuclear family and private homes. These are all small prices to pay for the potential of having significant illness within the family. If you have a way to do it in a socially distant manner with a tent outside, certainly that could be an option.”

A new stage of the pandemic, the second wave, is upon us. Hospitals are ready at a moment’s notice to quadruple their ICU beds and new pharmaceuticals that we didn’t have in the spring can now be deployed to help those most sick. While this is reassuring, no one wants to be put in a position to actually use these measures.

Democrats Win Key Races In Nassau

Absentee ballots help overcome GOP leads on Election Day

lection Day night was not the same this year.

Traditionally, the vast majority of races have been decided that day as candidates gathered at party campaign headquarters to await results.

With the advent of mass absentee ballots in 2020—thanks to the pandemic—the tallies at the end of that evening were only provisional.

Nassau County and New York State Democratic Committee Chairman Jay Jacobs joined with the county’s state senators on Nov. 17 at the county headquarters in Garden City to celebrate victories gained by mail-in votes.

Jacobs claimed he knew on election night that “this red mirage would turn out to be a blue ocean. And we had a confidence about this because we saw the blue ballots coming in. We had, on Election Day, more than 150,000 absentee ballots. That was 20 percent of the 720,000 people in Nassau County who voted. And we knew also that 2½ and even 3 to 1 were Democrats over Republicans.”

He added that the early voting was also overwhelmingly Democratic.

“That’s what I said to the team on election night,” Jacobs related. “We were all together and I said, ‘Things may not look too good now, but we’re going to win this.’ And it turned out to be right. And I had confidence that it would.”

The press conference was held to announce that first-term Sen. Kevin Thomas of Levittown had clinched his 5th District race against Republican Dennis Dunne Sr., also of Levittown. Dunne, a current councilman in the Town of Hempstead

At the close of Election Day, Dunne’s lead was 7,694 with about 28,130 absentee ballots uncounted.

Thomas was joined by fellow senators John Brooks (8th–Seaford), Todd Kaminsky (9th–Long Beach) and Anna Kaplan (7th–Great Neck), all of whom won their races.

Thomas confessed, “The wait to open these absentee ballots was agonizing and I found myself pacing around, counting with my fingers and in my head, whether I would win or not.”

The senator thanked a range of people, from his immediate family to the Democratic leadership, including Jacobs, whom he called his “mentor in this journey. A man whose vision and strategy got me through to the finish line. Most of us share a certain hope for the future. We want our kids to have a world class education with well-founded schools.

We want to be able to breathe clean air and protect our planet. Have the opportunity to own a home where we want to live. Raise a family in a safe

neighborhood and be able to drink clean water, among other priorities.”

James Gaughran (5th– Northport) was also present, and awaiting more counting in his race against Edmund Smyth, a Town of Huntington councilman.

On Nov. 18, according to a press release by Gaughran’s campaign, Smyth called to concede as Gaughran gained his second term. Smyth led by 13,848 votes on Election Day, with about 35,800 uncounted.

The 5th encompasses the northern portions of eastern Suffolk and western Nassau counties.

In a statement, Gaughran said, “I am humbled to be reelected by the residents of the 5th Senate District and I thank them for their support. I will keep fighting for my constituents, for Long Island, and for all of New York State and I thank the voters for giving me the opportunity to continue to serve them.”

Gaughran told Anton Media Group at the press conference that he was not pessimistic about his prospects after seeing the results on Election Day.

“Did the GOP attempts to paint the Long Island senate delegation as soft on crime and blame them for bail reform gain some traction?” he was asked.

“I did not see that at all,” Gaughran replied. “We fought back against that pretty hard and I think the results at the end of the day are going to show that people like the job that I’m doing representing them in Albany.”

Not that he was making any victory declaration that day.

“I have too much respect for the voters in my district and to my opponent as well, who is a gentleman. Suffolk County still has about 75 percent of the vote to count. So I’m going to wait,” he affirmed.

“So you don’t feel that the Republican message resonated with voters?” he was asked.

“I don’t think so,” he responded.

Jacobs praised the work of Sen Mike Gianaris (12– Queens), the deputy majority leader and head of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee.

Gianaris said he told Thomas that his was the race he wanted to win the most,

noting, “Kevin was targeted unfairly. He had millions of dollars of lies spread about him on the airwaves.”

Absentee ballots also brought wins to Democratic candidate Joseph R. Biden Jr. in Nassau over President Donald J. Trump. The president had led by about 6,000 votes at the close of Election Day. Similarly, 3rd District Congressman Thomas Suozzi (D–Glen Cove), overcame the lead of opponent George Santos (R–Queens) to win a third term.

In a press release on Nov. 17, Suozzi stated, “George Santos called me this morning to concede and congratulate me on my victory. I thanked him for his call. It is a great honor to serve as a Member of Congress and I look forward to continuing to work on behalf of the people I represent.

Our nation faces tremendous challenges and the division is distracting us from accomplishing our goals.”

Village of Great Neck Plaza Pass Several Motions In Monthly Meeting

he Board of Trustees of the Village of Great Neck Plaza held a public hearing on Wednesday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. via Zoom to consider amending a local law to extend a temporary moratorium on the construction of buildings containing three or more new dwelling units. The board also reviewed conditional use permits for a new restaurant to open in Great Neck Plaza, and an authorization to override the property tax cap for 2021-22.

As per law, the board must review the amendment twice before it can be made official. The moratorium was unanimously voted to pass on to the Nassau County Planning Commission. The Commission has 30 days to make its decision before returning the issue to the board for final review.

A new restaurant is coming to town at 69 Middle Neck Rd. Ramen

Totem, formally Saaho Village, will reopen as an Asian fusion restaurant, offering Japanese, Chinese and Thai cuisine in an American style. The original restaurant at this location served more traditional style Chinese cuisine and catered specifically to that community. Owners Cindy and Chun Ming Gao wanted a new menu to “appeal to most Americans and cater to the community more.”

Ramen Totem will offer takeout in the beginning stages of their opening, but may offer indoor and outdoor seating in the future if customers request it. Edna Guilor, representative for the applicants, shared that there were only minor changes to the establishment that was approved back in 2015: extended hours of operation from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., and the addition of a 72-inch sushi bar within the restaurant.

Mayor Ted Rosen led the motion to approve the conditional use permit, and it was passed with a 5-0 vote.

ewanhaka High School has named Hiba Agha and Rahul Maharjan as the valedictorian and salutatorian, respectively, for the Class of 2021.

Agha’s weighted GPA of 102.6218 is a testament to her success in her classes. Throughout her years at Sewanhaka, she has participated in various clubs and organizations.

South 12th Street Starts Underpass Construction

The third track project in the Village of New Hyde Park made progress as contractor 3TC and the MTA closed off South 12th Street to begin construction to eliminate the grade crossing that is currently there.

According to 3TC, the eliminations of the grade crossings will improve safety and the quality of life in the neighborhoods along the corridor.

Warning bells at crossing gates will be removed and trains traversing the intersection will no longer be required to sound their horns, which would be very welcomed for the homes that surround South 12th Street. Traffic backups also will be minimized along with the exhaust spewed by idling vehicle waiting at crossing gates in the down position, which can be 35 percent of the time or more during rush

hour. Most importantly, train-vehicle collisions at those locations become a thing of the past.

Drivers will need to utilize alternate crossings at either New Hyde Park Road or Covert Avenue.

The configuration was designed in conjunction with the Village of New Hyde Park and is expected to be finished in spring 2021.

Mineola Fire Department Makes Special Rescue

n Saturday Nov. 7, at 12:25 a.m. the Mineola Fire Department was alerted to respond to provide mutual aid to the Carle Place Fire Department. A working house fire was reported in Carle Place and Mineola was requested to provide a FAST (Firefighter Assist Standby Team). This is a specialized team dedicated to rescue downed/trapped firefighters should the need arise. The team is comprised of members of all three companies who regularly drill in search and rescue techniques. The team carries specialized equipment including Thermal Imaging Cameras (TIC) to help see through the smoke.

Upon arrival at the Command Post, the team was advised that the main body of fire was knocked down and crews were checking for extension. The occupants advised that all humans had safely exited the home, but their two cats were missing. One cat was quickly found by the first responders, but the second cat remained unaccounted for.

At the request of Carle Place Command, the Mineola FAST members deployed into the home to conduct a secondary search of the premises.

Using the Thermal Imaging Camera, firefighters Noah Love, Andres Dias and John Paul Valente located the second cat still hiding inside the building. The team safely removed the cat and reunited the family with their beloved pet.

Mineola Junior Fire Department Mineola Student Named In Do Some Training College Board National Hispanic Recognition Program Recently, members of the Mineola Junior Fire Department did some training with all three of its companies.

Well done by the officers of the Company 1, 2 and 3. The members did their training on the corner of East 2nd Street and Station Road by doing a combination of hydrant, water and ladder training.

Congratulations to Mineola High School student Yesenia Hanif, who was invited to participate in the College Board National Hispanic Recognition Program.

The program creates pathways to college for students from underrepresented communities and award academic honors and connects students to universities and scholarship opportunities around the country.

Students who take the Preliminary SAT, or PSAT, and identify as Hispanic American or Latinx are considered for the Hispanic Recognition Program.

They must earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher by the middle of their junior year to qualify, as well score in the top 2.5 percent of PSAT test takers in Yesenia Hanif the country.

Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Viviana Russell said, “This building is going to be so much more than just a building. It’s place where you can come for generations to come to celebrate the lives of your family members who fought for freedoms in this country.”

The ribbon was cut by Marion Pascarella, widow of 1st Sgt. Joseph Pascarella Sr. The lifelong Westbury resident served 28 years in the Marine Corps and was also the head of the Nassau County Veterans Service Agency. Marion also donated her husband’s Korean War Era Marine Corps dress blues uniform to the collection.

Gathering Memories

Slotnick pointed to a picture of soldiers at Camp Upton, out in Yaphank. That’s where James Walsh, the namesake of the post, went for basic training. He was killed in July, 2018, the first Westbury resident to fall in the Great War. “In my research, I found out that

when these guys were training for handto-hand combat, the Army hired boxers to go out there and show them how to fight,” she said. “And because most of them grew up playing baseball, when it came time to throw hand grenades, they were aces.”

“There’s so many interesting stories behind the picture,” she added.

On the plaque listing the names of those from the area who served in WWI, she said, there are names of three women. It was the first war in which women were allowed to enlist and were considered soldiers as part of the U.S. Naval Reserves. They took on a variety of duties and were known as yeomanettes or yeoman(F).

Among the names were Westbury’s Kathrin Haney Daily, RN. U.S. Navy yeoman(F). Her discharge papers were displayed.

MTA Eliminates School Street Crossing

of active duty in the Navy Nurse Corps during the Korean War Era. Kathrin Daily was her mother-in-law.

Col. Ted Blach, the former village clerk/ treasurer, donated two uniforms. He served in active duty with the Army from 1980-84 and was in the Army Reserves from 1985-2006 and involved in planning for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. One was a battle dress uniform from the Cold War era. The other was a desert camouflage combat uniform from the Gulf War Era. Joyce Wygand contributed an Army olive drab wool field jacket and trousers in honor of her husband John, a Korean War veteran, lifelong Westbury resident and Nassau County police officer.

Westbury was home to two members of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, Lt. Colonel Spann Watson (1916-2010) and Flight Officer/Pilot Douglas McQuillan (1923-1989). They and their fellow pilots were the first African American military aviators to be part of the Army Air Corps, precursor to the Air Force, and flew more than 15,000 sorties in Europe and North Africa during WWII. Doug McQuillan of Old Westbury was present to represent his father.

Michael Nidositko contributed a U.S. Army field officers’ combat trench coat and summer service dress shirt and trousers from WWII. He was honoring his father Michael, who retired with the rank of major, and uncles Nicholas and William Nidositko and John D. Wygand. All were WWII veterans.

n Nov. 13, Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul, MTA Construction & Development President Janno Lieber and local elected officials opened the new School Street underpass in the Village of Westbury and Hamlet of New Cassel. The undergrade crossing separates it from the Long Island Rail Road Main Line. It’s the fifth railroad crossing to be eliminated in the past 14 months—on time and on budget— as part of the LIRR Expansion Third Track Project.

“This new underpass will improve safety and bring a higher quality of life to this community by reducing noise, air and traffic pollution,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said in a statement.

In coordination with municipal, county and state government partners, MTA Construction & Development rebuilt the railroad crossing at School Street as a two-lane grade separated underpass with a sidewalk on the east side. The roadway project began with utility relocation in September of 2019, followed by LIRR signal modification in April 2020.

“The removal of this grade crossing will improve traffic flow and increase safety on our roads,” Hochul said.

To date, the School Street railroad crossing is the fifth of eight eliminated through the LIRR Expansion Project.

Last year, crews transformed former crossings at Urban Avenue in New Cassel and Covert Avenue in New Hyde Park into safe grade-separated underpasses.

School Street was closed to traffic on May 18 to allow excavation to begin as crews assembled the new bridge at an adjacent parking lot. The bridge was put into place over the course of just a single weekend, Oct. 3 and 4.

The School Street railroad crossing was the site of a tragic collision on Feb. 26, 2019, in which the three occupants of an automobile lost their lives after driving around a downed crossing gate. The grade crossing eliminations will also reduce traffic backups, as vehicles will no longer need to wait at crossings as trains pass, which can be as much as 35 percent of the time during rush hours.

With the first two projects being completed at Urban Avenue and the Cherry Lane Bridge there were many ‘growing pains.’ At the end of it all, now that the School Street grade elimination is coming to a close and just a few more projects to be completed, we look forward to utilizing the community benefit funds in the areas that were most impacted by this project and I believe this

project will be a safer, positive benefit to all of Long Island.”

Mayor of Westbury Peter Cavallaro said, “The Westbury community is very happy that the School Street grade crossing has been eliminated, as for decades that location had posed a grave danger to motorists and pedestrians. There was a fatal accident at that location, and there had been others in the past as well. We’re also very pleased to see the completion of an important infrastructure project that will enhance the road and rail systems servicing the community. As the Third Track Project progresses, we see the great benefits that we had anticipated coming to fruition.”

Funding for LIRR Expansion Project comes from the MTA’s 2015-19 Capital Program and 2020-24 Capital Program. Once the work is complete, the LIRR will have increased its capacity by roughly 50 percent. The upgrades will help provide a reliable, state-of-the-art rail system for Long Islanders. Eagle Scouting In The Age Of COVID-19

T

he Boy Scouts of America (BSA) motto is to be prepared.

It’s a maxim that came to bear significantly when Gavin Rogers was embarking on becoming an Eagle Scout. The primary path to earning the highest rank attainable in the BSA is the Eagle Scout Service Project, which is an opportunity for a Scout to show leadership while performing a project that benefits a community. Rogers’ initial Eagle Project for Troop 109 called for refurbishing a tree and bricklined walk at the entryway of Pinelawn Memorial Park and Arboretum. This fairly complex project was already signed off on when the pandemic struck.

“There is a memorial at the cemetery that’s located at the entrance when you come in that is kind of a small tree with a little bit of a brickway path that goes around it,” Rogers explained. “It’s kind of in shambles, so I was originally going to refurbish it as a project. I was going to take out the bricks, relay them and put a flower arrangement in. That was going to be my original project and then the coronavirus happened. I waited a few months and actually turned 18 in May. So [the Boy Scouts] were able to give me a three-month extension. I was waiting and the three month-extension came up and I had to make a decision because they wouldn’t give me anymore time after that.”

Scouts must complete their Eagle Project before their 18th birthday.

As Rogers’ Scout Master John Sharp explained, “If you’re a Scout and you want to be an Eagle Scout and get your project going, you have to do it when you are no older than 17 years and 364 days old. You have to complete it by that day. If you do that and everything is good, then you’ll be an Eagle Scout.

One day more, on your 18th birthday and you complete it—you lose.”

Despite the fact that Rogers turned 18 in May, BSA granted him a second and final three-month extension that began on Aug. 14, meaning the Eagle project had to be completed by Nov. 14. With COVID-19 restrictions in place that prevent national cemeteries like Pinelawn not expected to open any time soon, Rogers scrambled to

Bench building find another Eagle Project to complete before his final extension lapsed. His father Shawn, who is an Assistant Scout Master with Troop 109, connected his son with Patrick Burns, a past president of the East Farmingdale Kiwanis Club, with a connection with the Town of Babylon: It turned out East Farmingdale’s Michel Park was in need of park benches and a flagpole.

As is the case with every Eagle Project, there are significant benchmarks that need to be met. The recipient of the project, also known as the beneficiary, must sign off and approve the proposal at which point the scout must go before the Eagle Scout Committee, which asks a rigorous slate of questions pertaining to Eagle Project particulars ranging from number of anticipated man-hours to complete a job and the material resources and manpower necessary to work-safety issues and anticipated

budget costs. Suffice it to say, Rogers experienced plenty of obstacles for this Eagle Project that took six weeks and 20 people to help complete.

“Learning how to do the actual project was a major challenge,” the Farmingdale High School alum admitted. “One thing I had to do is lay a lot of cement and I don’t know how to lay cement. I had to find some volunteers.

Luckily, my best friend’s father was a contractor at one time and he owned a lot of supplies. So he was able to help me out and explain to me what had to be done. Also, building the benches [was a challenge]. I chose an aesthetically pleasing bench, which was also the hardest kind of bench [to build] that I could have picked.

My dad helped me out with that a lot as well. Basically, trying to figure out how to do the project, telling the Boy Scout board that I knew what I was doing and figuring it out along the way [were major hurdles]. But luckily, I had a lot of volunteers that helped me out with that.”

Town of Babylon officials initially offered to connect Rogers with contractors that could sell him a kit to build the benches and also pour the concrete bases for the seating and the flagpole. While the offer was generous, Burns explained, had Rogers sought that path, it would defeat the purpose of the project and he wouldn’t qualify to become an Eagle Scout.

From left: Theresa Rogers, Gavin Rogers, Rebecca Rogers and Shawn Rogers “The goal here is to involve them in something that is challenging enough to demonstrate their organizational abilities, their drive and the most important thing is the supervisory aspect of it,” Burns said. “They don’t want the Scout to do the whole project. They want him to go find volunteers.”

The project was completed and was appropriately dedicated on Veterans Day, during which time Rogers was awarded a citation as his family looked on. The next step for the Scout is to go before the Eagle Scout Committee and present the recap of the project and his Scouting experience. Burns expects Rogers to fly through the confirmation process, at which point he and three other young men will be sworn into the Eagle Scouts at a future, post-pandemic ceremony. For Rogers, who is a government and politics major at St. John’s University, Scouting proved to be a springboard for his future post-collegiate plans.

I would ideally like to go into public service and maybe run for a small election myself,” he said. “I’m very much into giving back to my community because of what they’ve done for me. That’s kind of what I want to do and maybe go into the big leagues.

That’s everyone’s dream.”

Telling Our Story: Hicksville High School A

t an historic time when life is so uncertain and our point of reference for “normal” shifts almost hour-to-hour, reflecting on the stability and constancy of our educational system provides an anchor we can all hold on to.

As communities continue to adapt to the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 health crisis, maintenance of school community relationships has never been more important. Teachers, students, parents are working together in-person and electronically to move forward into a “new normal.”

At Hicksville High School (HHS), Principal Raymond Williams recently reflected on the positives he sees.

“For me, joy comes from being back in the building and interacting with students and colleagues, and in finding different ways to promote student learning,” he explained. “We developed strong relationships before the constrictions of COVID and that is why we have been successful. We established a solid school community that cares and respects each other.

‘Compassion’ is a word we all need to embrace right now.”

The district continues its “Telling Our Story” series to remind us all that we are part of the greater community of which Williams speaks. Practicing patience, resiliency and compassion has seen Hicksville through a long history of prosperous and challenging times alike. Attending HHS remains the pinnacle of a student’s educational path in the district. And that has not changed—whether a student is attending in-school classes or learning remotely—high school is the most important stepping stone toward a bright future filled with hope and possibilities.

Situated on 27.3 acres, the blondbrick building itself stretches solidly along Division Avenue in a classic mid-century style. The building’s cornerstone records 1954 as its starting point, but the high school actually began decades earlier in the current middle school building on Jerusalem Avenue.

Noted in a publication held in the high school archives, “It was not until shortly after the sharp upward trend in population in 1850 that there is any record of schools in Hicksville.” The first school was the Nicholai Street School, a one-room clapboard building that

On February 21, 1901 the school district was organized as the Hicksville Union Free School District No. 17.

It is reported that in 1914 the school had 438 enrolled pupils and a staff of 14 teachers. In 1914, the high school was created and Regents certificate granted by the University of the State of New York. The first graduating class consisted of five members and the second class had two members.

One of the earliest images of graduates of Hicksville High School is simply labeled as the “Class of 1915.”

Hicksville’s population continued to grow, having a spike from 1923 to 1936.

In the spring of 1923, the community voted to approve $20,000 for the purchase of land for a new high school and $250,000 for the construction.

In December 1923, excavation was started for the construction of the junior-senior high school on Jerusalem Avenue. The cornerstone was laid on April 26, 1924, the same year the district built East Street as its second grammar school.

Archival records note that during the Thanksgiving vacation in 1924, “high school equipment was moved to the new building and on December 4

By 1925, Hicksville had a population of 4,762 according to the state census.

With a population of more than 4,500, the district was able to obtain more state aid and the board moved to hire a superintendent of schools. E. A. Van Slyke, the supervising principal, was hired as the first superintendent in 1925. His vice principal, Mabel R. Farley, was appointed as principal of the junior high school that same year.

Many of the community’s interesting stories hearken back to Hicksville High School. For example, if you’ve ever noticed the majestic concrete eagle at the Hicksville train station, you are seeing the results of efforts by a Hicksville High School Latin teacher, Samuel Goldberg, and his students. Goldberg’s class, which included a young Latin scholar, Harvey Goldstein, HHS’s Class of 1964, wrote letters to secure the preservation of one of the eagles from the old Penn Station in New York City, set for demolition in 1963. Erica Sinisky, Goldstein’s daughter, recalled, “My dad tells the story of how Mr. Goldberg was passionately opposed to the demolition and how the Latin class took a stand by writing letters and eventually acquired one of the highly coveted 22 eagles that immortalized the old Penn Station.”

“Every time I go to the Hicksville train station and see the eagle, I’m very proud,” Goldstein said. “Mr. Goldberg was a great teacher. He felt that New York City was changing and losing its neo-classical architecture. His methods of teaching were intriguing.

He gave us a lot of background and made learning Latin interesting.”

Classmate Joseph Platt agrees. “I had Mr. Goldberg for four years. Latin can be very dry and he made learning interesting and fun.”

I Still Don’t Get It I’m not a nurse. Some of my friends, and my favorite niece, are nurses. I’ve watched TV programs about nurses. But if I was to say I understood what it was actually like to be a nurse, I’d quickly be told that I don’t really have a clue.

I’m not a police officer.

Some of my friends are police officers. I’ve watched TV programs about the police.

But if I was to say I understood what it was really like to be a police officer, my friends would assure me that knowing about police officers and really understanding what it is like to be in that line of work are two different things.

I’m not a young black man.

Or a black woman. Or a black elder or a black child. I have very few black friends—not because I’d rather not, but I just didn’t grow up in a world with many people of color. I’ve seen movies and news stories,

notices the color of their skin.

But I have the privilege of walking through stores with no one questioning me (either out loud or within themselves).

I can take a walk through most neighborhoods without anyone wondering “what I am doing there?”

Or calling the police on me.

And in the few times I’ve had “official” interactions with anyone in authority, including police, I never once worried Fr. Ralph Sommer that I would be treated unfairly because I was a white man.

Some white folk hate and I’ve read books about black folk. And as with nursing the term “white privilege” or law enforcement, if I ever especially when they and their suggested that I understood earlier generations had to what it’s like to be a black work hard to get where they’re person in America, I’d be so off at today. I’m in a societal position where I could as easily have written this column about spring allergies, or the current loss of baseball, or what I’m looking forward to this summer. I doubt there would be letters written to chide me for not taking on the racial issues of the day.

I can easily entertain fleeting thoughts such as, “I feel so badly for those poor people who have to face racism each day….” or “What a shame that people are looting and are taking away from the message of the peaceful people who are protesting racial inequality…” or “I feel bad for my police friends and their comrades for the aspersions cast on them in

Living With Chronic Disease I’ve written candidly in this space about living with a blood cancer, Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, since 2010.

According to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, almost 180,000 people in the United States were expected to be diagnosed with leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma by year’s end, about one every three minutes.

Last time I checked in, I revealed that I had undergone a stem cell transplant in December 2019. Just to refresh—the aim was to replace my immune system with a new one and activate the donor’s stem cells to more effectively seek and destroy my cancer cells.

Naturally, as with any medical procedure, one can review the odds that suggest how often or well a procedure works and for how long, depending

that could be just as challenging as cancer to treat. It is potentially life-threatening condition called Graft versus Host Disease (GvHD).

What is GvHD? It is a condition that can develop when the donated stem cells (the graft) see the healthy tissues in the patient’s body (the host) as foreign and attack them along with the cancer cells they were intended to kill.

I was prescribed certain drugs before and after transplant to mitigate the risk of GvHD. One is an immunosuppressant which aims to slow down the immune system by preventing the new white

blood cells from going into full attack mode.

Over time, the immunosuppressant dosage was incrementally reduced to open the door a little wider for more protective donor cells to pass through and circulate.

I was doing fairly well until I started to experience some new symptoms, the most obvious of which was an itchy rash and skin blistering, which are consistent with GvHD. To address this, my immunosuppressant intake was increased to slow down the release of new white blood cells. In recovery, calibration is key.

Although I can conceal it quite well with my stoic bearing, I was freaking out imagining I would soon have to cope with a new chronic disease as the result of aggressively treating the other one.

It is still a little early to know where I stand as the symptoms have begun to dissipate with the adjustment of my meds.

Electrification Of The LIRR Port Jefferson Branch Is Decades Away If the MTA, on behalf of the LIRR, will not progress a planning study to look into the feasibility of extending electrification from Huntington to Port Jefferson, this project may never be completed in our lifetime.

There is $4 million in funding from the MTA $32 billion 2015-19 Five Year Capital Plan to pay for this study. The MTA previously promised that a contract would be awarded in the summer of 2019. They are 15 months late in awarding a contract. There is no announced recovery schedule for contract award.

If the MTA is unable to initiate a planning study, it may be an indication that this project will never advance. Estimated costs for electrification are $18 million per mile. The $260 million funding provided for electrification of the 7-mile Central Branch, running east of Hicksville on the Ronkokoma line to Babylon is also on hold. This is due to the ongoing MTA financial crisis. This capital improvement would provide additional options for thousands of Babylon riders. They could travel from the Central Branch to Jamaica via the $2.6 billion Main Line Third Track and on to either Penn Station or future Grand Central Terminal by December 2022.

Future opportunity for funding to progress this project beyond a planning study will be under upcoming MTA 2025-29, 2030-34 and 2035-39 Five Year Capital Plans. The estimated cost will grow over time to a $1 billion or more. This is necessary to pay for planning, design and engineering, environmental review, land acquisition for construction of power sub stations, expansion of commuter parking, potential relocation and/or consolidation of existing stations, new stations and platforms, additional new electric rail passenger cars, new electric car storage yard, new track, third rail and signals. From start to finish, this could require 15 to 20 years. Based upon my past experiences on other FTA MTA LIRR projects, I would not be surprised if electrification of the Port Jefferson branch is not completed until 2040.

If results from any planning studies are positive, the next step would be the environmental review process. This would cost millions more. Funding would have to be included under the next MTA 2025-29 Five Year Capital Plan.

The MTA 2020-40 20-Year Long Range Capital Needs Plan documents how much money, years or decades will be required before each MTA operating agency, including New York City Transit subway and bus, Staten Island Railway, Manhattan Bronx Surface Operating bus, MTA bus, Long Island and Metro North Rail Roads have reached a state of good repair.

Categories for each agency include such assets as existing bus, subway and commuter rail fleet, stations and elevators to meet Americans with Disabilities Act and escalators, track including switches,

signals and interlockings, communications, line structures and painting, protective netting on elevated structures and bridges, line equipment including tunnel lighting and pump rooms, traction power, power substations, yards and shops and supervisory vehicles. It would be revealing if the MTA & LIRR is serious about extending electrification to Port Jefferson over this time period, it would be included within this report.

Governor Cuomo and the MTA promised that this document would be made public by December 2019. It will soon be one year late.

Extending electrification of the Port Jefferson branch east of Huntington has been talked about for decades. In the 1980s, discussions took place between the MTA,

LIRR, Sufflok County and various elected officials over which branch should be electrified first. The Ronkonkoma branch was selected over the Port Jefferson branch.

Without electrification east of Huntington, Port Jefferson branch riders may not have a one-seat ride to the future LIRR Grand Central Terminal. Service is promised to begin by end of December 2022. Thousands of daily LIRR riders from diesel territory branches (including those commuting from stations east of Huntington to Port Jefferson, east of East Williston to Oyster Bay, east of Babylon to Speonk and east of Ronkonkoma will still have to change at Jamaica for travel to the future Grand Central Terminal or Atlantic Avenue Brooklyn.

I am grateful for each day and, at the same time ever-vigilant for the next sign or symptom—rash, cough, gastrointestinal glitch, swollen lymph node, joint pain, errant blood count or

Throughout my life, I have always held on to a sense of hope that I might transcend whatever it was that I was facing, as well as a feeling of gratitude for each step

have to do this or how loud would I have to get before others really heard me, understood me and worked together to do away with the divide that must seem so painful to God? I would love to close this column with a few common sense solutions to the racial problems facing our

country today. But it would be arrogant for me to do so, for I have hardly begun to listen to experience of people of color who I have hardly met. I don’t get it—yet.

Several Hicksville High School students received awards for participating in the New York State Field Band Conference Individual and Ensemble Competition. Congratulations to Samantha Mason, who placed fourth in the Individual Advanced Flute Performances, and to Nisarg Shah, who placed fourth in the Individual Advanced Saxophone Performances.

Hicksville color guard students designed their own performance, which won them first place in the Advanced Visual Ensemble category.

Congratulations to Alejandro Gonzalez, Kevin Sandoval, Sarah Chavez, Arianna Nelson, Nicole Rubio, Calypso Henriques, Cassidy Flanagan and Alexa Gomez. To participate in the competition, students were required to submit video recordings of themselves performing to the New York State Field Band Conference. The New York State Field Band Conference also featured a Virtual Ensemble, which was a collaboration of students from more than 40 schools in the state, including Hicksville students Samantha Mason and Brandon Baade. To participate in the competition, students were required to submit video recordings of themselves performing to the New York State Field Band Conference. Awards were then announced during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 1.

At Stratford School in Garden City, Lindsay Bleistein’s class commemorated students’ newfound success as authors with a Symphony Share. Second graders recently completed their first writing unit on narrative writing, through which they learned to capture their lives and ideas by writing stories.

Each student wrote several personal narratives and chose one piece to move into “the revision stage.” This entails editing and revising a first draft to incorporate a small moment to stretch out, additional details and powerful language.

Once the final drafts were published, it was time for the hardworking writers to shine. Bleistein’s students chose the most powerful sentences from their stories and read them during their group sharing celebration. Remote students tuned in virtually and the whole class came together through literacy.

Last spring, Joshua Stanton, a third-grader at the Farmingdale School District’s Saltzman East Memorial School, submitted a poem he had written entitled “Journey to Joy” to a creative writing contest presented annually by the Women’s Club of Farmingdale (WCF). Women’s clubs throughout New York State accept and judge entries from students in their school district and present first, second and third-place awards. This year’s Long Island Creative Writing Chairman of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs of New York State (GFWC-NYS), Dolores Cianciabella, was proud to award Stanton’s poem First Place. All the first place creative writing winners throughout the state then have their entries submitted to the New York State General Federation of Women’s Clubs’ contest where Stanton was awarded third place in New York State.

On Nov. 4, Cianciabella introduced Linda Kruessling, GFWC-NYS President, who presented Stanton with an award for his creative writing poem.

Cianciabella expressed to Joshua that “the words to his poem should inspire all of us, young and old, to try to reach a goal step by step.” She thanked him “for opening our eyes to finding joy. May you continue to write and spread that joy with your words.” Also present were Saltzman East Memorial School (SEMS) Principal Patricia O’Regan, SEMS Assistant Principal Anjay Smar, WCF President Tina Diamond and family members.

Kindness was on the minds of all students at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on Nov. 13. The school celebrated World Kindness Day, a global initiative to amplify the power of kindness through people’s actions, words and clothing. Students did, in fact, let their clothing do the talking, wearing shirts with positive expressions. The bulletin board across from the main office featured pictures of teachers and staff, holding up signs with one word to describe their students such as “Amazing,” “Generous,” “Smart” and “Talented.” Children read books about kindness including The Giving Village of Garden City residents are reminded that there will be no garbage or recycling pickup for Thanksgiving, Thursday, Nov. 26. Four seniors from Levittown Public Schools were recognized as 2020 All-State participants and/ or alternates by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA).

Due to the pandemic, the All-State Conference which usually is held in Rochester, will be held virtually this year. Students will perform in a virtual concert with their respective ensembles this December. Danielle Tear from Division Avenue High School was selected to perform the cello in the string orchestra, while Emily Zhang from General Douglas MacArthur High School was selected to perform the B-flat clarinet in the symphonic band. In addition, Jelissa Montesdeoca and Daniel Purcell, both from General Douglas MacArthur High School, were recognized as alternates for Soprano II and Bass I, respectively. As a result of the current health crisis, the All-State selection process was different than previous years but was still highly competitive. Current seniors who performed an All-State solo at the Spring 2019 NYSSMA Festival and who were selected to an All-State ensemble, either as a participant or an alternate, were accepted this year. In addition, current juniors who received high scores at the 2019 festival as sophomores, were eligible to be recommended by their teachers and those who qualified were selected as well to join the 2020 ensembles.

POLICE REPORT Robbery In Great Neck

Sixth Squad Detectives report the details of a robbery that occurred on Nov. 16 at 2 a.m. in Great Neck.

According to detectives, a white male suspect smashed the front glass door of the BP gas station, located at 133 Cuttermill Rd., using a large cinder block. The unknown suspect then entered the station and proceeded to the cashier’s counter and demanded money. He then threw the 63-year-old male cashier on the floor and grabbed the cash register off the counter and ran out of the station. The suspect is described as approximately 35-yearsold, with short dark hair, thin build and approximately 6 feet tall. He was wearing a black hat, black jacket and dark jeans. He fled the scene by entering the passenger side of a blue Chevrolet sedan.

Police Arrest Combative Woman In East Garden City The Third Squad reports the arrest

of a female from West Hempstead for assaulting a Nassau County Police Officer that occurred on Nov. 17 at 11:30 p.m. in East Garden City.

According to detectives, Third Precinct officers were dispatched for a disturbance that occurred on Oak Street. Upon their arrival, officers found a damaged black 2002 Mercedes Benz that had hit the median barrier.

The driver, defendant Charmaine Grant, 22, was informed that the vehicle was inoperable and would need to be towed. As officers gathered the information of the vehicle, they discovered that neither the license plate or the registration belonged to the vehicle.

When Grant was asked to provide any documentation proving ownership of the vehicle, she became verbally aggressive and refused. Officers placed Grant under arrest and placed her in the back of a police vehicle. As a female officer went to sit in the back next to Grant, she turned her legs toward the officer and began to kick her in the abdomen, chest, hip, arm and legs, causing substantial pain.

The 31-year-old passenger, Mario Perez of Rockaway, was in possession of a handgun. He was arrested without incident.

Colon is charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana and multiple traffic infractions. Colon was issued an appearance ticket for Dec. 14.

Perez is charged with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm.

He was arraigned on Nov. 13 in Mineola.

Glen Head Woman Arrested For Grand Larceny

The Sixth quad reports the arrest of a Glen Head woman for Grand Larceny that occurred on Tuesday, Nov. 17, at 3 p.m.

According to detectives, a joint investigation was conducted by the

Sixth Squad and the United States Postal Inspector that led to the arrest of defendant Lisa Buchanan, 41.

Defendant Buchanan was located by detectives at her residence at which time it was also revealed that the defendant was exposing her two male children, ages 5 and 13, to deplorable living conditions inside the home. Detectives notified New York State Child Protective Services and had the children removed with another family member to another residence.

Defendant Lisa Buchanan was placed into police custody. The investigation is ongoing.

Defendant Buchanan is charged with grand larceny in the second degree, criminal possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, three counts of endangering the welfare of a child, two counts of identity theft,

unlawful possession of personal ID in the third degree. Defendant Buchanan was arraigned on Nov. 18.

Arson In Hicksville

Arson Bomb Squad Detectives report the details of an arson that occurred on Sept. 27, at 4:30 a.m. in Hicksville.

According to detectives, Eighth Precinct officers responded to a call for a fire alarm located at 350 South Broadway. Upon arrival officers observed an active fire in the building and the Hicksville Fire Department responded to extinguish the fire. No occupants were inside the building at the time of the fire. The Arson Bomb Squad, Crime Scene Unit and the Fire Marshall responded to the scene and after a thorough police investigation it was determined that an unknown subject had intentionally started the fire. The subject is described as a white male, heavyset, wearing dark shorts, green hooded sweatshirt and white sneakers. The subject had thrown a rock through a window, causing it to break, and then threw an incendiary device into the building, causing the fire.

Mobile pet grooming services explode amidst pandemic

“M

obile grooming, since the start of the pandemic, has gotten insanely crazy,” said Chris Elias, co-owner of The Ruff Life Mobile Grooming with his wife, Emily Elias. “It has always been popular, but the future is this.”

Chris explained the demand for this catered service as being similar to the Uber Eats or Grub Hub phenomenon that has seen service multiply dozens of times since March with the restrictions and precautions of the COVID-19 virus pandemic.

With Emily’s, more than 10 years of grooming expertise, the couple hitched up the reins on their own business, in what began as a hobby career. Their efforts, now four years later, have exploded into seven full-service luxury mobile salons and 10 highly trained staff groomers, one of the largest mobile grooming services on Long Island.

“We travel the whole island, from the Queens border, all the way to the Hamptons,” Chris, a lifelong Massapequa resident, said.

“And yes, there are a lot of mobile groomers on Long Island, but it’s a repeat service; no one is fighting for business.” He said their business has seen more clients in the past six months than it has in the past four years in total.

Dogs and cats reap the majority of the benefits of this once-luxury

service, but Emily said occasionally they do see a rabbit or guinea pig for some pampering. And even still, it’s hard to imagine cats in a grooming setting, but Emily said, “Cats do not so as well in a store salon because it is high-stress for them, but take that same cat and put her in the grooming van, it makes a big difference.”

The groomers service a lot of special needs, older and anxiety ridden dogs, as well.

“There’s too much going on at in in-store salon, other dogs are barking, they’re in kennels” Chris said. “Here, the dogs come in, straight from their own house and are groomed straight through. The dog feels the calmness of the groomer, which makes for a better experience.”

Chris said they see a lot of difficult pets, ones who have typically been kicked out of a grooming salon for being super aggressive.

“Dogs do a lot better in this environment because it’s clean, it’s tranquil, the service is one-on-one, there are no cages.”

This is also the reason for the price points being different between mobile grooming

and in-store salons.

JOHN HENRY SMITH

On Thursday, September 24, 2020, John Henry Smith, of Greensboro, GA, passed away at the age of 86 at Piedmont Athens Regional Hospital in Athens, GA. John was born on October 2, 1933 in Port Washington, NY. He was the son of the late Jack W. Smith and Johanna B. Simon. He graduated from Port Washington High School and received his Engineering Degrees from the State University of NY Delhi and Hofstra University of Long Island, NY. On April 20, 1957 he married Ann Oddy Smith. They raised three children Leslie, Thomas and Heather.

For 42 years John worked for Turner Construction Company, retiring in 1998 as a Vice President. While working for Turner John oversaw such projects as the building of Madison Square Garden and Rockefeller Center, along with the rebuilding and renovating of Penn Station over the existing operating train lines. Other projects included hospitals in New York City and Gallipolis, OH; the Hewlett Packard factory in Waltham, MA; and Nationwide Insurance Building, The Ohio Theater, and American Electric Power in Columbus, OH. In 2013 John and Ann moved to Greensboro, GA and made their home in Del Webb. John had a passion for golfing. He spent as much time possible on the links and always hit the ball straight down the fairway. He also enjoyed fishing, yard work and spending time with his grandsons and family. He was a member of the Greensboro First United Methodist Church and the Elks Lodge Chapter 2849.

He is survived by his wife Ann O. Smith, of Greensboro, GA; daughter Leslie Martin and her husband Joseph of Crawfordville, GA; son, Thomas Simon Smith of Greensboro, GA; daughter Heather Christiano and her husband Timothy of Rockville, MD; and four grandsons, Sean and Adam Smith, and Kyle and John Christiano; and many relatives and friends.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family will be holding a private celebration of his life on his 87th birthday, Friday, October 2, 2020. was the younger sister to Audrey Demarco, Arlene Suttong, Clifton Smith Jr., Sharon Renna and Linda Pertrizzo. Denise grew up in Locust Valley, until she moved to Glen Cove in 1968, where she then met, who turned out to be the love of her life and husband Keno Zachary in 1973.

Denise had a daughter Pamela, who Keno loved and raised as his own.

The two went on to have two children together, Kena Sease (Zachary), and Keno Zachary Jr. Family meant the world to her, almost as much as an ice-cold can of Coke, a pack of cigarettes and a shot of Bacardi Gold. Denise always provided love and support for her family and friends. She was the mom of the block, but not just the block, she was mom to everyone whose life she touched and made better. The one, who when turning up the Lane at any given time, you could look up and catch a glimpse of her waving at you from the chair on the porch. Always with her door open for anyone who needed a warm place to stay or a hot meal if hungry. A person to listen to whatever you needed or wanted to talk about.

She was a woman who pulled no punches on what or how she felt.

You knew you were going to get the truth from her and people loved that about her. Her home was a place to spend Thanksgiving or any holiday, no matter if you were family or not.

You will be so missed Ammie. Forever in our hearts. Denise is survived by husband Keno W. Zachary, children Pamela Zachary, Kena Sease (Savon), Keno W Zachary Jr. (Jordana), godson Justin Hudson, grandchildren Tashana, Kayla, Nakeesha, James, Christopher, Aaliyah, Fatimah, Latia,

Jessica, Keno III and Aiden. Denise also leaves behind a slew of grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Visitation and service were held at Dodge Thomas Funeral Home of Glen Cove.

Massapequa High School Athletes Commit To College Teams

en student-athletes from Massapequa High School were recognized for their college sports commitments during a small ceremony on Nov. 10. The students will join teams on Long Island, New York State and across the country.

John Piropato, director of physical education, health, athletics and recreation, introduced the students, who were joined by their parents in the little theater. He commended the athletes on this achievement and thanked them for representing the Massapequa Chiefs so well.

From the baseball team, Liam Carroll will play for the University of New Haven and Vincent Mallon will play for the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Amanda Cerretani, from the softball team, is heading to Molloy College.
