Counting Every Vote Absentee ballots prolong waiting
BY FRANK RIZZO

B
efore the pandemic, there were strict rules regulating who could request and receive an absentee ballot. The accepted reasons included being out of the county, illness and disability and even being in jail awaiting adjudication of a crime. Only those convicted and imprisoned for a felony could not vote via mail. The coronavirus changed all that. Governor Andrew Cuomo added the fear of the disease as another reason to vote by mail under the “temporary illness” provision of the absentee ballot law. The result was that about four times as many New Yorkers requested absentee ballots in the 2020 election than they did in 2016. Reports indicated that

Tom Suozzi, with now President-elect Joe Biden, held a press conference at press time claiming that absentee ballots had given him a lead in his race. (Contributed photo) county board of elections (BOE) began counting more than 1.5 million absentee ballots across the state starting Nov. 9. Nassau County, said a BOE official, began its count on Nov. 12. Reportedly, 2.4 million absentee ballots were requested. By law, absentee ballots had to be postmarked no later than Election Day, Nov. 3, and arrive at the BOE offices by Nov. 10. Military and overseas ballots must be received by Nov. 16 (and also be postmarked by Election Day).
Unique New York
A number of states count their absentee ballots on Election Day, giving an immediate result for most races. So why does it take so long for New York to count all the ballots? There is the sheer amount of mail-in ballots, which overwhelmed boards of election. New York law lets voters change their minds and vote in person after mailing in a ballot. Under regulations, the posted ballot is tossed and only the in-person vote counts. Election officials also have to check the large influx of absentee ballots against in-person voter records (once held in large polling books, now on tablet devices) to guard against anyone voting twice. The state BOE also has to check all absentee ballots
submitted against requests to ensure that no one cast ballots in more than one county. This process reportedly wrapped up on Nov. 6, In a labor-intensive and laborious process, BOE employees had to open each envelope and feed the completed ballot into vote-counting machines.
It may take two weeks before we know the actual final tally here in New York State. —Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs
The June 10 primary, in which large numbers of mailin ballots were processed for the first time, was criticized for numerous shortcomings. Before the general election, Anton Media Group asked New York State and Nassau County Democratic Committee Chairman Jay Jacobs, “Are you confident that mail-in balloting will not turn into a problem, like it did in the primary?” “It only turned into a problem because staff was overwhelmed by the amount of absentee ballots,” Jacobs replied. “I think that’s going to happen again. I cannot see
The coronavirus has changed everything, including the elections. For the first time, New York State introduced a period of early voting, and more than 2.5 million took advantage and went to the polls from Oct. 24 to Nov. 1. Pictured are voters at a poll site in Valley Stream on Election Day. (Photo by Frank Rizzo) how something in the area of 2 million absentee ballots aren’t going to overtax the system. Now, that said, it doesn’t mean those votes don’t get counted. It just means there’s going to be a methodical, time-consuming process to get it done, and it may take two weeks before we know the actual final tally here in New York State.” Many mail-in ballots were disqualified in June because of simple mistakes such as signatures in the wrong place and other minor technicalities. Fixes introduced in time for the general election included clearer instructions. New York lawmakers consequently passed a new law allowing mail-in ballots to be “cured,” in the technical term. Voters will be notified by regular mail, email or a phone call and then have up to five days after being notified to correct the mistake on their ballot. This further delays the counting process. In addition, provisional ballots also have to be checked to avoid irregularities. County BOEs have until Nov. 28 to report results to the state.
Indecision
Santos of Queens, 68,991 to 67,522. In a Facebook post on Nov. 7, Suozzi stated, “In my race there are 98,000 absentee ballots which represent over 25 percent of the overall vote. The political registration of the people that sent those ballots is 52 percent Democratic, 19 percent Republican and 29 percent independent or other. We are confident that I will win those ballots 2 to 1 and I will win the race by over 20,000 votes.” Jacobs said that in Nassau, Suozzi would benefit by Democrats casting 26,000 absentee ballots to 9,700 for Democrats. First-term state Senate incumbents James Gaughran (D–5) and Kevin Thomas (D–6) trailed their respective Republican opponents, Edmund Smyth and Dennis Dunne Sr. after Election Day tallies. Smyth leads by 13,848 votes with about 35,800 uncounted. Jacobs said that Democrats have a 6,000 lead in absentee ballots in the district. Dunne’s lead is 7,694 with about 28,130 uncounted. In the 6th, Jacobs noted, his party has a 6,500 advantage over the GOP in absentee ballots cast.

County Executive Unveils Plans For New Police Evidence Warehouse
New warehouse will help pave the way for county’s first veterans housing development BY ANTHONY MURRAY
L
amurray@antonmediagroup.com
ast week, Nassau County Executive Laura Curran was joined by state Senator John Brooks, Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder and local veterans to unveil plans for a new, secure evidence storage facility that will help pave the way for the county’s first veterans housing development. The new storage facility will afford the police department greater efficiency for evidence retrieval and safeguarding, while allowing the county to move forward with plans to re-develop the old facility into the county’s first affordable apartment complex for veterans. “This is a very logical win-win for the residents and for veterans of Nassau County,” Curran said. “There is a police storage facility right now in Mitchel Field, which is going to be re-purposed. We are going to build the new storage facility right on this site.” The site that Curran mentioned is a parking lot that is across the street from Nassau County Police Headquarters at the intersection of 14th Street and Golf Club Lane in Mineola. “What will be built and developed at the Mitchel Field site is affordable housing for veterans,” Curran continued. “This is going to be Nassau County’s first affordable housing development for our veterans. It makes a lot of sense to have the storage facility actually close to the police department. It will be more efficient, modern and it will bring this Mitchel Field site back to its original purpose. Back in the day, it was actually an officers’ quarters. We know that there’s veterans housing around Mitchel Field already that’s been re-purposed in the not too distant past.” Curran mentioned that the county is aware that veterans homelessness is an issue and that affordable housing for veterans is also an issue. “This will bring us one step closer to addressing that issue and to make sure that our veterans have an affordable place to live right here in Nassau County,” Curran said. “Nassau County was where so many of our GIs decided to live after World

War II. We have a very proud history of military service in Nassau County. We have more than 50,000 veterans who live here.” Curran said that she is very proud of her team, the county’s Department of Public Works and the compliance and procurement side, which has been underway for the development, as well as the county’s police department. “We do have on Long Island as a whole one of the largest concentration of veterans in the state,” Senator Brooks said. “Housing is an issue and this is a great opportunity for us to serve our veterans even better. I think this is an example of real smart government. We have a facility [whose] purpose is changing; we can move in, reconstruct, revitalize the building and veterans in there shortly. This is great news for everybody.” Ryder said that on the police side of things, they have evidence in their current storage facility that goes back to 1925 from a murder scene. “We have evidence of cases that continues to be under an appeals
process that we have to protect and preserve,” Ryder explained. “This new building will not only be very secure, but it will also be climate controlled, giving us the ability to store things and organize in a way that we haven’t done in a long time. This will make us much more efficient, so I’m very thankful for the opportunity to have this new building and I thank the county executive for pushing it forward.” The redevelopment of the building is currently out for bid and is under the real estate portfolio of Smith and Degroat, who handles a lot of the county’s historic and county parcels. “We will be actively seeking developers who will be using state

grants and vouchers to fund the redevelopment, so it should not cost the county taxpayer any money at all,” said Brian Schneider, deputy county executive for Parks and Public Works. “We’re figuring 20 to 25 apartments with some other amenities like athletic facilities and elevators to get up multiple floors. It is an ongoing process, but certainly the moving of the police evidence facility opens up that option for us.”

Curran Announces Partnership With State, Northwell To Provide COVID Testing In Great Neck
N
assau County Executive Laura Curran recently announced a partnership with New York State and Northwell to provide free drive-through COVID-19 rapid testing in Great Neck in response to a recent increase in infections. Testing is at North Shore Hebrew Academy, which is located at 16 Cherry Ln. Hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 1-833-4CARENY (1-833-422-7369). All COVID-19 testing is provided free regardless of immigration status. “In partnership with New York State and Northwell, Nassau is expanding COVID-19 testing in Great Neck after a recent increase in infections,” Curran said. “As COVID-19 cases spike to record numbers nationwide, let’s remain vigilant and proactive. Nassau County will continue to respond to micro-spikes—wherever they may pop up—with testing, tracing, and community outreach. I thank all the men and women at Northwell for the life saving work they do every day.” Rapid response COVID-19 diagnostic testing will be completed utilizing BinaxNOW COVID-19 Ag CARD tests that will be provided by Nassau County. Northwell Health will also provide and administer PCR/ diagnostic testing to validate the results of the BinaxNOW COVID-19 Ag CARD tests. A drive-through model of test delivery will be employed. Community members will be directed to remain in their cars and go to an available testing station to receive their nasal swabs for the two diagnostic tests. When the testing administration is completed, community members will be directed to wait in their cars in the parking lot of North Shore Hebrew Academy to receive their rapid response results, directions as to how to get their PCR/diagnostic test results and related educational material. Once rapid response test results and educational material have been disseminated, community members will be directed as to where to exit the testing site. Testing will be available to community members who are aged 8 and older. Individuals who are under 18 will be consented by a parent or guardian. Testing will be open to Nassau County residents only and will be by appointment only. “COVID-19 has greatly disrupted
Great Neck is the latest village to be getting a rapid COVID-19 testing center. (Photo by Arthur Raslich) our lives and hit our most vulnerable communities the hardest. As cases are slightly increasing in our area, we need to make sure we go above and beyond to stop outbreaks from occurring. We are committed to keeping our communities safe, and this testing initiative will go a long way for the Jewish community like it has for so many others we are working with across Long Island and metro New York,” said Deb SalasLopez, who is the Northwell Health Senior Vice President of Community and Population Health. State Senator Anna Kaplan said it is unfortunate that the county is starting to see a spike in COVID cases that
experts predicted would happen this fall. “Unlike when the virus hit us from Europe last spring, we now have the tools in place to deal with it and contain it before it becomes another outbreak here in Nassau County,” she said. “By strategically deploying convenient testing opportunities in hot spot areas like we are doing in Great Neck, we are helping more people to find out their status, and take appropriate action to stop the spread. It’s a strategy that has worked in areas around the state, and I’m grateful to Governor Cuomo for his leadership on this strategy, and for the partnership of County Executive
Curran, North Shore Hebrew Academy, and Northwell Health in getting it implemented.” North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said she applauds the state, the county and Northwell Health for working together to open a testing center in Great Neck. “The health and well-being of our residents is of paramount importance and having easy access to a testing site will be vital to the residents of Great Neck and the greater North Hempstead community,” Bosworth said. —Submitted by the office of Laura Curran

Surveying The Business Landscape
LOCAL NEWS
Rauch Foundation study hope to help navigate pandemic’s economic impact BY DAVE GIL DE RUBIO
dgilderubio@antonmediagroup.com
A
ccording to Yelp.com’s Local Economic Impact Report, more than 97,966 businesses have permanently shut down during the pandemic. Alarmed by numbers like these, the Rauch Foundation is taking a harder look at the Long Island situation and is seeking input from local business owners to better understand the impact the coronavirus is having on the local economic landscape. The Garden City-based foundation, whose mission statement includes investing in ideas and organizations that spark systemic change in our communities, recently released a new survey to better measure COVID-19’s impact on Long Island’s business and downtown districts. The idea is that the results from this online survey, available to business owners in both English and Spanish, can help inform recommendations on how to insure a speedier recovery. But it’s crucial to get that information directly from the source, according to
Rauch Foundation President Nancy Rauch Douzinas
(Photo courtesy of the Rauch Foundation)
Rauch Foundation President Nancy Rauch Douzinas. “It’s easy to guess what the impact of the pandemic might be on local small businesses—but until we hear from the business owners themselves, we can’t really know for sure,” she said.
In addition to distributing the survey through a number of regional platforms, the Rauch Foundation is hiring canvassers to walk a cross section of downtowns and speak with store owners. The survey takes between five to 10 minutes to complete and will be available through Nov. 30. It includes questions about how stores were managing the changing retail environment prior to COVID, how the pandemic impacted their bottom line and what types of remedies and solutions owners would embrace to make their businesses more sustainable going forward. The Rauch Foundation’s interest in the ebb and flow of local business can be traced back to when the organization was publishing the Long Island Index study for 15 years up through 2019. That report consistently studied downtown communities, along with what made them thrive and what types of investments were effective in catalyzing future growth. This current survey is a continuation of that and for Long Island Association President
Kevin Law, is crucial because of the granular approach it is taking in analyzing the impact of COVID-19 on local business. “There have been other surveys of business owners since the pandemic but this is the first one exclusively focused on our village communities— the heart of our region,” Law said. “I strongly encourage local businesses to reply to the survey so we might better plan appropriate responses to current conditions.” Law, who co-chairs the Long Island Economic Development Council, has been overseeing Downtown Revitalization Initiative grants. The results from this survey are important in helping determine the best way to help local businesses get back on their feet. A full report and analysis of the survey results are expected in early 2021. Visit www.research.net/r/lidown town to access the survey in both English and Spanish. The Plainedge High School alum, who graduated as the school’s 1992 valedictorian, is a National Museum of Mathematics’ Chief Mathematical Advisor, a Fields Medalist and a Princeton professor who teaches a Ph.D. numbers theory program to graduate students. With these bona fides under his belt, it’s not surprising that former Indian Minister of Education Shri Prakash Javadekar personally asked him to join a nine-member committee looking to transform India’s education policy, which was last updated in 1986. Given that Bhargava had spent time in his family’s hometown of Jodhpur working to introduce multidisciplinary nuances to the curricula of local engineering schools, the government’s outreach made perfect sense. “Over the years, I’ve spent a lot of time in India,” Bhargava said. “What I realized when I’d go to India is I’d watch the kids there. They’re so
talented, but they just didn’t have the opportunities that we do here. It left a mark on me and made me want to one day come and help.” As someone who completed all of his high school math and computer science courses by age 14 and had his love and passion for mathematics fostered by his Hofstra University math professor mother and numerous Plainedge teachers, Bhargava was all in.

Bhargava moved to India in 2017 after receiving the invite to help transform India’s education system with proper foundations for universal, high-quality education from early childhood to the university level. “All the other committee members were people that were already in the Indian education system,” he explained. “They felt like there should be somebody who could bring in an international perspective. It turned out I could be that representative and how could I say no to that?” Upon arriving in India, Bhargava quickly realized there were numerous fundamental issues needing

attention, including widespread lack of opportunity for early childhood education, shockingly low rates of early literacy, high dropout rates after middle school and severely substandard teacher education institutions. It was made all the more evident after a year research was spent by the panel traveling throughout India to visit schools and universities and meet educators and government officials. It was quite an eye-opening experience for the Princeton professor. “I didn’t know what I was getting into,” he said. “I thought I was going to go there and be working on using my experience in mathematics education. When I started visiting places and doing the research, I realized the Indian education system had far bigger problems than fine-tuning mathematics education. Twenty percent of the students there are in a position that by eighth grade, they’re still not able to read and write. They’re unable to do basic operations with numerals that we all use. How can you spend time fine-tuning these higher level things when fundamentals are

Young Minds And Education Policy because they are hungry. The government has addressed that by launching an initiative called the Midday Meal program, which guarantees all children a hot meal by law during school days. One of the panel’s recommendations is also including a cold breakfast meal because for many of these children, it’s the only real meal they ever get. As Bhargava points out, “Those morning hours are wasted because the only meal they got was lunch the day before.”

The year of doing research by traveling throughout India by Bhargava and his eight colleagues on the “Committee for Draft National Education Policy” was followed by the submission of a final report and plan suggesting wide-ranging educational reforms that aim to achieve a 100 Percent Gross Enrollment Ratio (the number of students enrolled in school education) by 2030. Passed on July 29, 2020, the revamped education policy highlights include: • Implementing universal early
childhood education for all children of ages three to six • Launching a comprehensive early literacy mission so no child falls behind due to reasons of illiteracy • Establishing a gender-inclusion fund to support community efforts and ensure all girls and transgender students are included in the education system • Starting a program to locate dropouts and help bring them back into the education system • Moving towards holistic and multidisciplinary education across the arts, humanities, sciences, vocational subjects and sports, in early childhood education through higher education • Committing to ramp up government spending on education to 6 percent (currently around 3-4 percent) of Gross Domestic Product over the next few years After the final “Draft National Education Policy 2019” report was submitted on May 31, 2019, Bhargava spent much of the last two years traveling to Delhi to encourage government

officials to pass the new education policy as soon as possible. Currently teaching remotely as a full-time professor at Princeton, Bhargava is grateful for the understanding his current employers have shown in understanding his work with the Indian government. His involvement has found him returning to his family’s home country numerous times and keeping nighttime hours that enable him to participate in daytime education policy seminars given the 10½-hour East Coast-India time difference. With this revamped education policy set in a 20-year-time frame, Bhargava is on board for as long as the Indian government will have him. “As long as I’m adding value and they see value in having me involved. I can’t think of a more impactful thing to be doing,” he said. “So if I’m adding value, I’ll certainly stay involved.” Do you have a story you want to tell? he 10th annual All Kids Fair held its annual event on Nov. 8. This expo could not take place in its usual month of April, due to COVID-19, but those who attended had a terrific time. This year’s All Kids Fair had a great lineup of virtual classes for the kids of all ages with some for the adults, too. Some of the many kids’ classes were: Disney Singalong, Soccer, two Floral Arranging classes and Family Yoga. For the adults, there were classes on Essential Oils, Fidelis Care Information and Pampering Pitstop. The platform that the event took place on will store the information for the next 27 days, so all are welcome to visit and learn about the 35 exhibitors and their offerings and enjoy over half of the classes, available on the site until Dec. 8. Since families always enjoy our in-person petting zoo, this year there were virtual “live animal visits,” where farm animals such as sheep, goats and a mini-donkey were the stars. Town Seeds Oyster Bay Harbor With Millions Of Clam, Oyster Seedlings
yster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Councilman Lou Imbroto and Clerk Richard LaMarca took to the waters on the town’s north shore last week to help replenish the clam and oyster supply in Oyster Bay Harbor. The officials completed the seeding of approximately three million clam and 250,000 oyster seedlings. “Oyster Bay Harbor is one of the crown jewels of Oyster Bay and I’m proud to say that under my administration we are now doing more than ever before to improve its water quality,” said Saladino. “These seedlings, many of which were grown right in our new hatchery, are placed into closed public waters where they are protected from being harvested until they are
fully grown.” Shellfish filter up to 50 gallons of water a day through their feeding process. The preservation of Oyster Bay Harbor’s water quality through the repopulation of shellfish is an important component of making the water cleaner for swimming, fishing, boating and all life in the harbor. “This seeding initiative improves water quality, bolsters the local economy and improves the resiliency of our coastal communities by restoring shellfish populations to the harbor,” Imbroto said. “These efforts help preserve the natural beauty of our local waterways for generations to come.” —Submitted by the Town of Oyster Bay

DEC Announces Fall Trout Water District’s First 1,4-Dioxane Stocking Schedule For Long Island Treatment System Is Operational The fall trout stocking program for Nassau and Suffolk counties is underway. A total of nearly 8,000 fall yearling brown trout will be stocked this fall according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC). Regional Director Carrie Gallagher said, “Nassau and Suffolk counties have an abundance of rivers, lakes and streams that beckon New Yorkers to get outside and check out the region’s fishing opportunities safely and responsibly.” In Nassau County, a total of approximately 3,400 brown trout have been stocked in Wantagh’s Upper Twin Pond, Massapequa Reservoir and Oyster Bay Mill Pond. The NY Open for Fishing and Hunting Initiative has been created to improve recreational opportunities for sportsmen and women and to boost tourism activities throughout the state. Under the governor’s Adventure NY initiative, DEC is making strategic investments to expand access to healthy, active outdoor recreation, connect more New Yorkers and visitors to nature and the outdoors, protect natural resources, and boost local economies. Anglers are reminded that trout fishing season on Long Island is yearround for most lakes and streams and that there is a daily limit of three fish
per person. Anglers should be mindful in taking precautions to stop the spread of COVID-19. DEC is reminding anglers to be “SMART” when fishing this year: • Socially distance at least six feet apart • Mask: Wear a mask when you cannot maintain social distancing, especially in parking lots and along footpaths • Avoid sharing gear when possible • Respect your fellow anglers and the resource by providing space and practicing ethical angling • Take out what you bring in or place trash in receptacles —Submitted by New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
The Plainview Water District’s first advanced oxidation process (AOP) treatment system is operational after receiving approval from the New York State Department of Health. AOP treatment, along with granular activated carbon (GAC), is the only treatment combination proven to remove 1,4-dioxane from drinking water. The district’s plant #2 is the first of four production facilities to receive the treatment duo that is now producing water with non-detectable levels of 1,4-dioxane ahead of the state’s compliance deadline. “This is a watershed moment for the Plainview Water District and our community as a whole,” said district Chairman Marc Laykind. “We have been dedicated to the development of these AOP treatment projects each and every day for more than two years so it is extremely gratifying
to have our first system up and running. Being in this position today is no small feat—this came together because of this district’s comprehensive planning and execution all in the name of providing higher-quality water to Plainview-Old Bethpage residents.” On Aug. 26, the New York State Health Department finalized regulations that will take effect later this year. These regulations established maximum contaminant levels (MCL) for emerging compounds 1,4-dioxane, PFOA and PFOS. For information visit www.pla inviewwater.org or call 516-9316469. he “Greatest Generation” is rapidly leaving the stage. Therefore, it was special having two living links to that bygone era at the Carle Place Veterans Day ceremony on Nov. 11. Nick Pasquarella of Valley Stream, 95, and Marvin Levine of Carle Place, 92, are two of the seven members of the Carle Place American Legion Post 1718 who served in WWII. Post Commander Al Piscitelli introduced the two men, who received a warm applause from the large gathering at Veterans Memorial Park. He also joked that Pasquarella had recently beaten him in their bowling competition, scoring a 204. And that’s with no handicap. Pasquarella, a 39-year member, said he served in the Pacific War as a heavy equipment operator. He did the “island hopping” from New Guinea to Okinawa. “That was enough world traveling for one lifetime,” he was told. “You have no idea,” replied Pasquarella, who retired as a heavy equipment operator. “People talk about D-Day, but I saw three D-Days, two in the Philippines and one in Okinawa.” When asked, “What did you take
WWII veterans Nick Pasquarella of Valley Stream, left, and Marvin Levine of Carle Place salute the flag, which was raised by member Ted Rykowski. (Photo by Frank Rizzo) away from your time in the service?” he replied, “I wish I wasn’t there.” Levine agreed with his colleague, adding, “I was in a safe place,” being stationed in Texas during the war. Levine, a 35-year post member, said he is a retired machine designer. Piscitelli, who served in the Army from 1954-56, read the names of the other WWII veterans who could not make the ceremony: William Braithwaite (66-year member), Michael Dangelo (17), Louis Cianca (63), Salvatore Russo (52) and John
Shedel (50). He noted that the post was founded in 1948 and at one point had about 500 members. Today it had less than 60, but it was still active. Chaplain Helmut Walter made note of those who sacrificed “for a better nation and the generations yet unborn.” He also prayed for a “world where nations may resolve their differences by peaceful means.” Michael Giambone, Vietnam War veteran and Purple Heart recipient, read poems written by schoolchildren
to honor veterans and made note that this was the 70th anniversary of the start of the Korean War as well as the 245th anniversary of the formation of the Marine Corps. “On this day we stand united in respect,” he said. “On this day we honor the willingness to serve. On this day we remember the sacrifice. On this day we thank all veterans.” Piscitelli also noted that it was the 75th anniversary of the end of WWII. Guest speaker and Town of North Hempstead Clerk Wayne Wink said Veterans Day also commemorates “those who sacrificed their time, their youth, their energy and in many cases their health and even their lives, for the betterment of our great society.” After alluding to the political divide, Wink observed, “I hope that today, like every day, Americans on all side, throughout the political spectrum, join together to realize that the things that bring us together are more important than things that separate us. And all those who sacrificed—their sacrifice is the reason why we can disagree.” To comment on this story, email frizzo@antonmedia group.com
Magro Golf Outing A Smashing Success Golfers came together on Oct. 26 to enjoy a great day of end-of-season play and benefit the Michael Magro Foundation (MMF), Long Island’s charity working to help families with a child battling cancer and other catastrophic illnesses. With social distancing in place and MMF masks on their faces, 117 golfers took to the course at Cold Spring Country Club to raise an astounding $408,000 for this important cause. Many of the day’s participants were there to support honoree Tony Magro, senior managing director of Evercore, where he leads the corporate advisory business. Magro, uncle to Michael Magro, spoke from his heart. “So many of you have been so dedicated and so loyal to this cause while I have been a distant observer and supporter. I am humbled,” he said, and reminisced of days spent with Michael, whose kindness and gentleness of soul are reflected in the Foundation. He honored Michael’s parents, Paul and Terrie Magro, who have dedicated their lives to helping families in crisis. Dinner guests, spread across several tented outdoor spaces, were treated to a performance by Long Island comedian Chris Monty. While the laughter he

Monty noted, “I work with cancer organizations because I lost my mom seven years ago after her second fight [with the disease]. I’m honoring her memory by doing this.” Toward the end of the evening, Tom Alini was spotted saying goodbye to Terrie Magro. Owner of Ticket Time, an online ticket purchasing site. Alini
and his family were aided by the MMF when his young son was diagnosed with leukemia. “I am truly heartened at the number of people who came out during COVID-19 for such a tremendous cause,” he said. “Small foundations like the Michael Magro Foundation are the ones really working with families. Large organizations are working toward important treatments and cures, and that’s really important. But within three months of my son’s diagnosis, when my wife and I were really in crisis, Terrie Magro came to us and helped make us whole. We are forever grateful.” Alini’s company is donating 30 percent of all ticket sales mentioning the MMF back to the foundation to help families in need. Students in Melissa Butler’s art classes at Old Country Road School (OCRS) participated in a very special project this year. The Memory Project is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating global kindness through art (www.memoryproject.org). American students, like those pictured here from OCRS holding their artworks, exchange artworks with children from countries that are culturally very different from the USA. For this project, the artworks the students are holding will be sent to students in Pakistan. The intent of the exchange is to promote inter-cultural awareness, break down cultural and geographical barriers and inspire creativity through the universal language of art. Butler’s students started the project during the 2019-20 school year, but due to COVID-19, the project was not completed until this school year. All participants wrote their first name and age on the back of the artwork, attached a photo of themselves, and traced an outline of their hand. This process allows all participants to see the child with whom they are exchanging art, and to symbolically touch hands across the world. “Our students took time out of their day to create meaningful heartfelt pieces of artwork that depicted different messages such as peace, friendship, kindness and things that make them happy,” Butler explained. “Thank you to OCRS Principal Laura McConnell and the OCRS PTA for sponsoring the project and allowing the students to exchange with 50 students in Pakistan. This has truly been a great experience.”

The College Board National Recognition Programs create pathways to college for students from underrepresented communities. The programs awards academic honors and connect students to universities and scholarship opportunities around the country. Students who take the Preliminary SAT, or PSAT, and identify as Hispanic American or Latino are considered for the Hispanic Recognition Program. They must meet the minimum PSAT score, which varies each year, as well as earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher by the middle of their junior year to qualify.

Hempstead Town Councilman Tom Muscarella (right) and Town Clerk Kate Murray (left) recently provided a free PPE kit to Emma Abdul of Emma’s Salon in Westbury. This new town program makes 6,000 PPE kits available for local businesses with items needed to keep their staff and patrons safe. The kits are available free of charge and are only available while supplies last, so businesses in need
of these high-in-demand supplies are encouraged to apply on the town website, hempsteadny.gov/ppe-giveaway, as soon as possible. This initiative has been made possible through funding from the federal CARES Act, which provided a $133 million grant to the Town of Hempstead to distribute economic relief grants to alleviate some of the adverse effects that have arisen due to the pandemic.
Remote and hybrid students from Wisdom Lane Middle School in the Levittown Public Schools are uniting through the power of exercise, thanks to the school’s physical education department. Physical Education Chairperson Christopher Letts and physical education teachers Eric Bradley, Kim Fusco and John Randazzo started creating workout videos filled with different exercises that can be done at home or in the school gymnasium. Each workout features different music to keep the pace exciting and motivating. A projector has been set up the gymnasium to display the workout video on the wall for the teachers and in-person students to follow while stationed 12 feet apart. Remote students at home also follow along with the video live with the in-person students. The physical education teachers utilize screen share in Google Meet to connect the remote and in-person students. They can then monitor and communicate with the remote students while both work out together. The Town of North Hempstead is collecting gift cards for grocery stores and pharmacies to help veterans combat food insecurity via the Hero Hunger Help project. Benefits are distributed by Northport VA Medical Center. For info, call 311. Due to the
COVID-19 pandemic, no clothing, personal care goods or other items will be accepted. Mail gift cards to: Veterans Advisory Committee, Town of North Hempstead, 220 Plandome Rd., Manhasset, NY 11030.

A Special Thanksgiving Message The holiday of Thanksgiving has both historical roots and spiritual significance. Through the rituals of Thanksgiving, the forefathers of this nation celebrated what our Creator did for them by bringing them joy even in the midst of scarcity. It was their state of mind, not just the state of their reality, that moved them to be thankful. Every person with a grateful heart should take stock of the goodness in their life, count his or her blessings and devoutly thank the Almighty. Thanksgiving Day should simply be the catalyst that causes us to be thankful all year long. We should always be happy and say thank you because each and every one of us has much to be grateful for. Every day should be Thanksgiving Day. Thanksgiving is more than just a holiday, or even a feeling. At its most powerful form of expression, it is an action. Specifically, the act of expressing gratitude for kindnesses bestowed upon us, as well as our ancestors before us. We show our gratitude by personally acknowledging what has been done, or by writing a note, making a phone call, or returning the favor. Being appreciative opens the door to divine blessing

Maternal Depression Rates Rise During Pandemic BY VANESSA MCMULLAN editorial@antonmediagroup.com
Pregnancy and childbirth are exciting times in a family’s life, filled with joy and awe. For some mothers, however, the situation is far more complex. While many women experience some mild mood changes during or after the birth of a child, 15 to 20 percent of women have more significant symptoms of postpartum depression and other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders or PMADs. At North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center, we work with moms and pregnant women whose symptoms may include feelings of sadness, irritability, guilt, lack of interest in the baby and changes in eating and sleeping habits. Some also experience trouble concentrating, thoughts of hopelessness and even thoughts of harming the baby or herself. Research shows that the pandemic has increased the incidents of PMADs, and

VFW-Supported Vet Center Expansion Act Becomes Law
ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Last week, the VFW-supported H.R. 1812, the Vet Center Eligibility Expansion Act, was signed into law. This law expands Vet Center counseling and related mental health services for veterans and service members of the National Guard Reserve, or Coast Guard, who took part in drug interdictions or responded to national Disasters or emergencies. Participating in these high-stress situations can have serious mental health consequences. Expanding access to vet Centers will provide an opportunity for those who served in these situations to have access to the mental health services they earned and deserved.

Binge-watch these Christmas classics to get in the holiday spirit A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965)
BY CHERYL WADSWORTH
W
EDITORIAL@ANTONMEDIAGROUP.COM
inter brings many things. Cold weather, snow and shoveling, Thanksgiving, Christmas and Hanukkah just to name a few. The days are busy with work, shopping, cooking and often a lot of stress. One way to combat all of that is to cozy up at home and watch a classic holiday movie that will be on television or pop in a DVD. The following are just a few suggestions to get in the spirit.
What would the holidays be without A Charlie Brown Christmas? Written by Charles M. Schulz, this animated holiday classic is for all ages. Who doesn’t love the story of Charlie Brown, a boy who just doesn’t seem to get a break, yet always holds out hope. After he expresses his displeasure with Christmas being only about the presents, he sets out to find the perfect Christmas tree for the holiday pageant. Naturally, his tree isn’t what Lucy and the others would have picked out but in the end they all come together and realize what the holiday is truly all about.
Babes in Toyland or March of the Wooden Soldiers (1934)
An all-time favorite tradition of mine has been to watch this movie every Thanksgiving morning. It’s on every year and to me, it never gets old. Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy star as the fumbling toymakers who live with the old lady in her shoe along with all of her children. When the evil Barnaby (Henry Brandon) threatens to evict them for nonpayment of rent, Laurel and Hardy attempt to come to her rescue. Bo-Peep, Tom Tom, the three little pigs and of course the Boogie Man are just a few characters to get involved with the hijinks. A classic to introduce to your older children.
White Christmas (1954)
White Christmas stars Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen and is another classic featuring of course the all-time favorite Christmas song of the same name sung by the great Bing Crosby. Bing and Kaye play song and dance partners who team up with sisters to save the Vermont Inn of their former general from going under. The holidays aren’t the same without seeing this movie at least once.
Miracle on 34th Street (1947) Don’t waste your time on the remakes of this film as there can only be one with Natalie Wood. Miracle on 34th Street stars Maureen O’Hara, John Payne, Edmund Gwenn and Natalie Wood and it will make you feel good all over. Non-believer Doris Walker learns a valuable lesson about faith and love from, of all people, Kris Kringle. Wood portrays the skeptical Susan Walker brilliantly and we all share in her surprise as she pulls on Kris’s beard to realize that it is real.
Other holiday classics include Home Alone, National Lampoon’s Christmas and A Christmas Story for starters. So cuddle up with a warm blanket, grab a snack and enjoy some nostalgia one afternoon or evening. You will be happy you did.
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) Another quintessential Christmas film, It’s A Wonderful Life, directed by Frank Capra has already began playing pretty regularly. This holiday classic will make you laugh and cry but it is the ultimate feel good movie. James Stewart, Donna Reed, Lionel Barrymore and Henry Travers bring to life the characters we have all grown to love. George Bailey always puts everyone first before realizing his dreams but it takes an innocent angel to show him that in reality he has everything he ever needed. I still can’t look during the scene in the bank when Uncle Billy loses the money and the unscrupulous Mr. Potter watches in secret knowing very well that he is in possession of the money. I don’t know about you, but every time I hear a bell tingle I believe an angel got his wings.

Activities To Do In December BY ANTHONY MURRAY
T
amurray@antonmediagroup.com
his December, things may be a little different since we’re all facing an unprecedented pandemic. With that said, the holidays will be different too, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still do some fun things. Here are some activities, which you can do socially distanced, to try throughout December for a safe and fun holiday. Do Some Shopping
Although most stores do have some restrictions due to the CDC, you can still head to your favorite stores to pick up some gifts for your loved ones, or even for yourself. However, if you don’t feel safe or comfortable going to stores this year, there is always the wonderful thing called the Internet. You can browse Amazon.com or your favorite chain store website— just remember the shipping dates are a little different this year thanks to high demand, so make sure to get your orders in early.
Decorate
Holiday decorating can feel like a chore, but once the process is over, it’s that much easier to get into the spirit. The end of the year is also a good time to do some general redecorating around the house. As the expression goes, out with the old and in with the new.
started their new seasons, so there is a lot of catching up to do. It’s an especially good activity for those days or nights of being snowed in or if you need to quarantine.
Bake Some Treats
If ever there’s a time to indulge a little, it’s the holidays. Though classics like gingerbread, shortbread and sugar cookies can be hard to resist, there are always new and intriguing recipes to experiment with like biscotti, cookie bars, lemon squares, cakes, pies and breads. Try enough of them out and before you know it, there may be a new favorite on your list.
Donate To Those In Need
Everyone knows the holidays are about giving, but there’s no need to stop at friends and family. Churches and community centers accept Enjoy The Snow nonperishable food items to If it does snow, it can be give to people in need, which a hassle, especially when shov- is needed now more than ever. eling is required, so it pays to Giving just one item can go a make the best of it. Build a snowman, have a snowball fight or make a snow angel. An afternoon in the snow makes the hot chocolate taste even better.
Catch Up On Your Favorite TV Shows
Thanks to the pandemic, a lot of our favorite TV shows aren’t on right now or just
Go Sledding
One reason to pray for snow is that without it, sledding wouldn’t be possible. Climb to the top of the hill, ride the sled all the way down to the bottom and do it all over again. It’s as simple as that. long way in brightening the holidays for others.
Get Creative With Cards
Even though it’s easy to send a Christmas card with a picture, homemade cards have become more popular in recent years. Materials such as glitter, finger-paint and fabric have turned making a Christmas card into a unique kind of arts and crafts project.
Relax
Everyone deserves a little R and R, especially this year, so why not treat yourself to some during this hectic month? A bubble bath, taking some walks throughout the neighborhood, take-out delivery or cup of tea (or glass of wine) in front of the television are a great start to putting your to-do list on hold.
Watch a Holiday Movie
Netflix typically has a nice selection and TV networks can always be counted on for marathons. The only real question
is where to begin. With movies like It’s a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Elf, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and countless others, there’s never enough time to get to all of them.
Read a Book
Go on a technology hiatus for a few hours and hunker down with a blanket, hot beverage and a good book. Choose from a traditional classic, holiday favorite or whatever is on the New York Times best-seller list.
Volunteer Your Time
While it is important to help those in need year round, the holidays can be extra hard for those in need. Consider helping out at a soup kitchen or coat drive, reading to seniors or listening to someone who needs a friend, some of which can all be done virtually.
Take a Trip
Cold temperatures and snow have become so synonymous with Christmas that it’s easy to forget that those things may not be for everyone. You can even drive around local neighborhoods and look at all the beautiful holiday lights that people have put up this year.

Bruce Springsteen - Letter To You (Columbia) Springsteen latest studio album finds him reuniting with the E Street Band for the first time since 2014’s High Hopes. Regret, aging and dying are themes threaded throughout these 12 songs, three originally written prior to the release of the Boss’ 1973 debut Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.
Billie Joe Armstrong - No Fun Mondays (Reprise/Warner Brothers) Blame the pandemic for this collection of cover songs the Green Day front man originally recorded for weekly release on the Green Day YouTube channel. Armstrong keeps it eclectic by delving into the canons of John Lennon, The Bangles, Johnny Thunders, Tommy James & the Shondells, The Wonders and Billy Bragg. Neil Diamond & the London Symphony Orchestra - Classic Diamonds with the London Symphony Orchestra (Capitol) Recorded at Abbey Road, these 14 songs are drawn from the Diamond songbook and include orchestrated versions of “Sweet Caroline,”

Garth Brooks - Fun (Pearl Records) Brooks’ long-awaited twelfth album features 14 songs that include a cover of “Shallow,” which was originally a duet between Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper in A Star Is Born. For this version, Brooks will be joined by fellow artist and spouse Trisha Yearwood. Josh Groban - Harmony (Reprise) Groban goes back to basics with this collection of mostly covers that include interpretations of “I Can’t Make You Love Me,” “Impossible Dream” and a duet with Sara Bareilles on the Joni Mitchell classic “Both Sides Now.”
pop star Minogue finds her looking to 1970s and 1980s disco for inspiration and fusing it with modern-day electronic dance music.
Sam Smith - Love Goes (Capitol) The third album by this English singer-songwriter, Smith describes it as his “first proper heartbreak album.” Expect fewer ballads and plenty of poppier tracks.
Chris Stapleton - Starting Over (Mercury Nashville) Straddling the worlds of George Jones and the Allman Brothers, the father of five returns with a collection of songs that finds him collaborating with Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell on Stapleton’s fourth studio outing.
Kylie Minogue - Disco (BMG) For her fourteenth studio album, the latest creative pitstop by Australian

ARIES (March 21-April 19). It’s a mighty fine week for getting your point across. If you don’t have a point to get across, the cosmic winds will supply suggestions. Ask for input from experts but put even more stock in your feelings and senses. A visceral response to your options will be quite informative, leading you to clarify your purpose. TAURUS (April 20-May 20). The very nature of unconscious bias is that it’s undetectable by the holder. It takes a proactive desire to improve to uncover real beliefs and behaviors. Feedback from outsiders is necessary, as is a hard look at the evidence. None of this is possible without humility. All development has humble beginnings. GEMINI (May 21-June 21). You’d like to think you’re moving onto better things. There’s no way of knowing for sure. How you judge today will be very different from how you’ll think of it in six months or six years. To be aware of the uncertainty of change and still take it on is an act of courage and hope -- two things overflowing in you this week. CANCER (June 22-July 22). Selfless service is easier when you are fully aware that the person you’re giving to has nothing to give to you. Where it becomes tricky is when you know that the other person has plenty and could give to you if so desired. Expectation creeps in. Can you be selfless in this case? And if so, should you be? LEO (July 23-Aug. 22). Negativity bias is in human DNA for good reason. To avoid danger is to save the species. But on a personal level, if you don’t counteract the tendency to notice the bad and give it more attention than good, existence gets bleak. Correct for negativity bias by consciously choosing to be positive and joyful. It works! VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22). You’ll have companionship along your journey, though perhaps not in person. Distance communication is different. The physical cues and tones get lost. More efforts must be made to convey emotion and create a connection. You’re particularly good at it this week, partly because passion and enthusiasm are running high. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23). What we want always comes with a flip side that’s not so easy to see while in the throes of our desire. In short, the piper must be paid. This week, he won’t want money, rather there’s a more valuable currency that will be exchanged. You’re rich in this currency, so it shouldn’t be a problem for you. SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21). There are emotional states you’d rather not inhabit. When you get a sense that you could be headed there, you’ll steer to avoid. Heartbreak is among these states, though it’s not the worst one in the category. That prize goes to regret. In fact, sometimes you have to steer toward heartbreak in order to avoid regret. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21). Back when you didn’t know what you were doing, you started on a tract of remarkable originality. Now, you’re well-aware of norms so it’s hard to resist veering into conformity. Can you see a place to meet in the middle? If not, stick to your way and keep going. It may take you longer, but you’ll get there. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). The people around you affect your destiny, so it matters what they think of you but not nearly as much as you think. There’s a time to pay attention to their opinions, but right now you’re better off exploring and fleshing out your vision to the fullest. It will be easier to influence others than conform to them. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18). You’re hanging quite a lot of expectation on one exciting future event. It may even be robbing you of your enjoyment of all that’s going on now. True, things will change after the event. But it’s also true that there are ecstatic joys and beautiful treasures living inside this week that will not live inside any other time. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20). Some of your thoughts are yours, and some are just pretending they come from you. They cleverly disguise themselves in your style, talk in your voice and lean into sturdy parts of you hoping you won’t be vigilant enough to put them to the test. This week’s breakthrough comes from challenging those thoughts.

Let Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg, M.D., be your guide. This nationally renown plastic surgeon has appeared in many magazines, on television, as well as hosts his own radio shows. Using only the latest technology and most current procedures, Dr. Greenberg meets the needs of every patient, from today’s top stars to the ‘soccer mom’ next door. Breast augmentation, breast lifts and breast reductions provide beautiful, natural looking results. Combining these procedures with liposuction, tummy tuck, body lift, facelift, eyelid lift or other non-surgical services is most effective. Regardless of which procedures you select, the focus of Dr. Greenberg is to make his patients as happy and as beautiful as they can be by turning back the hands of time in a caring, safe and supportive environment. The latest techniques have been perfected to offer Breast Augmentation patients a truly “rapid recovery.” Minimal swelling and bruising, coupled with a notably decreased recovery time, have
resulted in proven patient satisfaction. Recognizing the need for patients to quickly return to their normal activities, “rapid recovery” ensures both excellent results and faster recovery time. The hottest surgical techniques to make you look younger include eyelid lifts, facelifts, deep laser resurfacing, and rhinoplasty. A facelift, mini lift, lower lift, or full lift, with or without Plasma, will take years off of your appearance. A facelift removes excess skin, rejuvenates the neck and lifts the jowls while restoring a more youthful look for both men and women. Injections work quickly to eliminate facial lines and wrinkles (including Botox® Cosmetic, Juvederm and Restylane®) and when coupled with non-surgical skin tightening and skin rejuvenation treatments, ensure phenomenal results! As the seasons are changing, now is the perfect time to seek help with those last few inches that you can’t seem to lose. Body contouring can be the answer to reshaping those undesirable areas of your body. The SmartLipo™ MPX, is ideal for the neck, jawline, arms, breasts, “bra fat,” abdomen, “love handles,”“saddle bags,” inner and outer thighs, and knees. The recovery with SmartLipo® is very fast. Another avenue to consider is having a Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty). Especially effective postpregnancy in a Mommy Makeover or after significant weight loss, this procedure improves abdominal contouring, and can have you in great shape in a very short period of time. Abdominoplasty is very effective in reducing or eliminating stretch marks, skin excess, and for correcting weakening of the abdominal muscles. Most women who have had children and those women and men that how had weight fluctuations will have some laxity of the abdominal wall and will experience excellent results.
Dr. Stephen T. Greenberg offers complimentary consultations at his Park Avenue and Long Island locations. To schedule call 516-364-4200 or visit his website www.GreenbergCosmeticSurgery.com. 218157 M
