The Community Chest of Port Washington recently announced the selection of 26 nonprofit organizations that will receive programming grants, starting in January 2021. Helping more than 7,000 people each year, these organizations supported by the Community Chest address social service, health and welfare, educational and other needs of Port Washington residents.

“With COVID, this was an especially challenging year for many people in our community, including those non-profits that we fund,” Michael Cooperman, co-chair of the Community Chest of Port Washington Budget and Allocations Committee, said.

Environmental Review To Take Place For West Shore Road Property

uring the most recent Town of North Hempstead board meeting, the town board approved a resolution declaring themselves the lead agency for an environmental review pertaining to an application from Southern Land Company (SLC)—a Nashville, Tennessee-based real estate development company.

SLC filed an application to the Town of North Hempstead in November 2020 and is seeking a change in zoning from “Residence-AAA” to “multiple residence” for the property located at 145 West Shore Rd. in Port Washington. The applicant is proposing to construct a seven-level, 176-unit multiple residence on the 7.17-acre, partially-underwater property.

Gordon Tepper, the director of communications for the Town of North Hempstead stated in an email that declaring the town as the lead agency for the environmental review is the first step in the process and no public hearings have been held as of yet. Tepper further stated that this application is “expected to be a lengthy process,” but did not comment further on the matter.

SLC feels that this particular area is a prime location for real estate given the waterfront access and stated that there is “a substantial need for multi-family housing on the North Shore of Nassau County.”

“Southern Land believes it has found a parcel with tremendous potential that, when completed, will offer significant environmental, financial and public benefits to the entire Port Washington peninsula community,” Dustin Downey, senior vice president of Southern Land Company, said.

The site is currently home to a sand and gravel company, but over the years the property has become rundown. Since the early design phase of the project, SLC has been working with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) to assess all aspects of environmental restoration and with local environmental groups to understand the property’s ecosystem. Environmental clean up of the site is expected to cost

between $500-900 million dollars.

“This includes, but is not limited to, removing or remediating hundreds of contaminated piles from the water; removing environmentally hazardous debris from the water and shoreline, including industrial tires, old boats and abandoned cars; removing any sunken vessels we may find in the water; and removing steel cribbing from the water and shoreline,” Downey said.

SLC is proposing one, two and three-bedroom rental units in the complex. The smallest one-bedroom unit will be 870-square-feet. The largest two-bedroom unit will be 1,544 square feet. There will be a total of nine three-bedroom units at approximately 1,810 square feet. Approximate rent costs will range from $3,450 to $11,000 per month. Part of the project will include one and two-bedroom units available to future residents earning up to 80 percent of the area’s median income (AMI).

The development company is also exploring plans for a marina that would include a publicly accessible pier and a total of 30 boat slips available for rent among residents and the general public. They are also hoping to include a public promenade that would connect their project with

North Hempstead Beach Park.

In order to move the process forward, the town must comply with three actions under the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA) in order to determine the potential environmental impacts that the proposed changes to the zoning may have on the surrounding area.

In the first action, the town must declare themselves the lead agency in the project. This gives the town jurisdiction over the project, allowing them to oversee and coordinate the environmental review process.

Second, the town must issue a determination of significance as to whether “the proposed action has potentially significant adverse environmental impacts which warrant further investigation in an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). In this case, the town has identified impacts to tidal wetland habitat, water supply, traffic volume, aesthetics and the use and enjoyment of the adjacent public beach/park, among others, as potentially significant.

Lastly, the town must set a date for a public scoping session. Under the SEQRA regulations, the public is given the opportunity to offer suggestions as to what should be included in the EIS. Examples include “specific

locations to perform traffic analysis or times of day to take noise readings.

The scoping session only covers the contents for the EIS and is not a hearing to discuss the merits of the project. The town does not respond to comments raised during the scoping session. Instead, a scope will be issued shortly after the end of the public comment period. A public hearing on the merits of the application will follow the completion of the draft phase of the EIS.” “We are setting the date for the public scoping session tentatively for March 23 at 6 p.m. when the applicant, other involved agencies and any interested parties from the community will have the opportunity to comment on the scope of the issues to be considered during the environmental review,” Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Mariann Dalimonte said at the Jan. 21 meeting.

Folan’s father, McDara Folan, Jr., became a partner in the Frank O’Rourke Agency, Inc. during 1964 and purchased the rest of the shares of the O’Rourke Agency during 1973.

AGATE Port Washington To Hold Virtual Discussion

Sing Along With Salem A Port Washington elementary school capitalized on virtual learning as a means to extend its annual holiday celebration this year.

However, to accommodate social distancing while still spreading joy to every South Salem individual, the building continued the tradition for the 2020 holidays through a virtual assembly for its Holiday Sing Along ahead of winter recess. Led by General Music and Chorus teacher, Stephen Connolly and Band and Orchestra teacher, John Akios, the entire Salem family collaborated for a series of different songs, each introduced by fifth grade students. Concluding the special celebration was an end of the year countdown as dismissal began to commemorate the end of 2020 in a positive and inclusive manner.

Temple Judea Observes Martin Luther King’s Birthday

n a recent Friday evening, a special Zoom Shabbat service was held by Temple Judea to honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and to celebrate his life and teachings.

The congregants were joined virtually

by Pastor LaTanya Jimerson, of the Springs of Living Water Church, along with her family and members of their congregation. Rabbi Todd Chizner and Cantor Deborah Jacobson presented a moving and eloquent program to honor Dr. King’s memory.

To start the services, Cantor Jacobson led the congregants in a song which is traditionally sung during the evening Shabbat service, “Hinay mah tov.” The translation of the entire song, which is Psalm 133, is: “Behold how good and how pleasant for brethren to dwell together in unity.” This was especially fitting to include this song as this was Dr. King’s lifelong dream.

When Pastor Jimerson spoke to the group, she also quoted from Psalm 133 which alluded to the relevance “for brethren to dwell together in unity.”

The words of this Psalm have particularly resonance in today’s world. The

The choir of the church provided heartfelt songs, and one of the congregants read excerpts from Dr King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, which is often called the most important influence on U.S. law on civil rights since Reconstruction. Songs performed by members of the church’s Praise and Worship choir lent a beautiful

and soulful spirit to the service. The weekend provided a moving tribute to Dr. King. Everyone felt the solemnity and sense of hope of the occasion. It was truly a privilege to be participants in this meaningful experience.

orthwell Health has opened a coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) PCR testing site in Port Washington, thanks to a $1 million gift from the Peter & Jeri Dejana Foundation.

The testing site, located at the Port Washington Adult Activity Center at 80 Manorhaven Boulevard, started seeing patients on Jan. 10. It was launched to make COVID-19 testing more accessible to residents, particularly those who represent cultural groups disproportionately impacted by coronavirus.

First-half of the 2021 General Tax payments must be postmarked by the U.S. Postal Service on or before Feb. 10, to avoid penalty.

Online tax payment information is shown on the reverse side of your bill.

Online payments may be made by e-check or credit card at: www.northhempsteadny.gov/tax-payments. The normal processing fees for online check payments have changed. The town is offering a temporary nominal processing fee charge of $0.01 for online Automated Clearing House (ACH) E-Check tax payments during this period of social distancing to help accommodate residents.

The Tax Office fee waiver applies specifically to ACH E-Check payments that pull funds directly from a person’s checking account.

The online credit card payment processing fee will remain at 2.35 percent of the tax amount per transaction.

New York General Municipal Law requires people paying their property

taxes by credit card to also pay the fees associated with the payment transaction. The town receives no portion of the service fee—that fee is retained by the payment processing vendors. Accepted credit cards are American Express, Mastercard, Discover or Visa.

Additionally, to adhere to social distancing requirements, there will be no in-person payments and no cash payments accepted. Community collection sites have been canceled for this period and the main office at 200 Plandome Rd. in Manhasset is closed to the general public.

Payments can be made online via the Receiver’s online payment portal, U.S. Mail, or delivered in person to a dropbox located in the vestibule of the Tax Office (during normal business hours). he Community Chest of Port Washington recently announced the selection of 26 nonprofit organizations that will receive programming grants, starting in January 2021.

Helping more than 7,000 people each year, these organizations supported by the Community Chest address social service, health and welfare, educational and other needs of Port Washington residents. “With COVID, this was an especially challenging year for many people in our community, including those non-profits that we fund,�

Michael Cooperman, co-chair of the Community Chest of Port Washington Budget and Allocations Committee, said. “We selected these deserving organizations for funding based on the continued impact and services they are providing to members of the Port Washington community.�

General operating grants were given to: Littig House Community Center, Nicholas Center, North Shore Child and Family Guidance Center, Plant A Row for the Hungry, Port Washington, Port Counseling Center;

he oldest man to ever occupy the Oval Office hit the ground running. Metaphorically, of course.

Fulfilling a dream that began four decades ago, Democrat Joseph Robinette Biden Jr.. 78, was sworn in as the 46th chief executive on one of the most unusual Inauguration Days in the nation’s history. It came exactly two weeks after an unprecedented insurrection at the Capitol that many saw as a direct attack on our democracy.

Wasting little time, the veteran pol spent much time during his first few days in the West Wing, signing a flurry of executive orders meant to reverse some of the decisions issued

by President Donald Trump. Biden also unveiled an ambitious agenda to eradicate the coronavirus pandemic, prop up the ravaged economy, fight climate change and restore a sense of civility to the political discourse.

Political Is Local

Decisions made by Biden and agreements reached with the Congress will have an impact on the daily lives of New Yorkers and Long Islanders in particular.

First is the president’s ambitious plan to use the Defense Production Act to increase vaccine output and inoculate 100 million Americans in the first 100 days. Governor Andrew Cuomo warned last week that the state was running out of vaccines.

Mass vaccinations will help open up the economy and restore normalcy to lives that have been upended by the pandemic lockdown.

It is known that Biden, and new Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-Brooklyn), want to restore the full state and local tax (SALT) deduction on federal taxes. Passed as part of Trump’s Tax Act of 2017, it limits SALT to $10,00 and hurts a large number of Long Island property owners.

The president’s $1.9 trillion COVID relief plan includes $350 billion in state and local government aid to partially restore the tax revenues affected by the lockdown.

Biden’s political philosophy has always included a large dose of bipartisanship and cooperation.

“pledging to work together on behalf of the American people.”

In his maiden speech as majority leader, Schumer pledged an activist agenda in working together with the new president.

He added, “This Senate will legislate.

It will be active, responsive, energetic, and bold.”

In a press conference on Jan. 22, Suozzi touted his vice-chairmanship of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus, made up of 28 members from each party, as a vehicle for cooperation.

Replying to a question, Suozzi asserted that the Caucus will be a factor during the first 100 days of the Biden administration.

“We played a big role when we got the pandemic deal done,” he pointed out. “And that was really started with the Problem Solvers, which is now 28 Democrats and 28 Republicans. We laid a package in conjunction with the senators we’ve been working with. We proved it worked and people know it works. It helped us get over the finish line. There’s not always going to be enough leeway among Democrats to get things done, so we have to reach across party lines. And we should do that anyway.”

Suozzi added, “It’s not easy. It’s not a matter of ‘Can’t you guys sit down and work it out?’ That doesn’t happen because everybody is pandering to their base and worried about their primaries. And the commonsensical idea of talking to each other and working through problems is not easy to do, even more difficult in this environment of people voting for the objections [to the Electoral College outcome in different states]. But I’m committed to that and I’m going to keep on doing that.”

Sams Takes Helm At SUNY Old Westbury

fter a 10-month search with dozens of candidates considered, SUNY Old Westbury tapped Syracuse native Dr. Timothy E. Sams to lead the four-year institution.

He succeeds Dr. Calvin O. Butts III, who stepped down last August after a tenure of nearly 21 years.

Sams has extensive administrative experience, having spent 29 years in various leadership positions. His last post was vice president of student affairs for Prairie View A&M University in Prairie View, TX. Anton Media Group recently interviewed Sams as he got ready to assume the top spot.

Why did you get picked over so many qualified people?

A significant portion of the liability of an institution lies with its student body. I believe that a lot of the challenges manifest themselves in the students’ lives. If we have a challenge around our academic apparatus, you will see it play out in the quality of our graduates and the failure of us to graduate students. Any business model requires that you have a keen ability to deliver on the promise you make to your consumers. In the 29 years I’ve been [in this field] I have worked to get the institution to move and shift and change in a way that ultimately makes our primary consumer satisfied. And that’s our students.

Where do you see the college needing improvement and where is it lacking?

We need capital. We need money. Of all the schools that I’m aware of, Old Westbury sits on the greatest mound of promise and potential I’ve ever seen. How do we get it to fully engage so that it would be one of the most meaningful colleges in our nation? And the answer is, it needs capital. It needs investment.

It needs people to believe in that mission and who have the financial wherewithal to fuel that mission so that it can be catalytic to change in this country.

of Trustees as far as pleading for resources?

Yes. And as you know, both private and public colleges have to have a diverse financial portfolio.

Long gone are the days when public colleges and universities rely on financials coming from the state. The SUNY system is not unlike any other.

The demand has increased and the resources have decreased—almost in parallel. And so what a leader has to do today is be able to go out and work the financial and the funding world and sell them on the fact that we are truly investment worthy.

What are some of the immediate things that need to be addressed?

COVID-19. If I said anything else I’d have my head in the sand.

But along the lines of COVID comes financial stability. Schools are taking significant hits in their enrollment.

We are an enrollment-driven institution, which means the fewer students we have, [the less] in our financial coffers for the operation of the school.

Roslyn Landmark Society Elects 2021 Officers And Trustees T

he Roslyn Landmark Society is pleased to announce the promotion of Jennifer Lister to Executive Director and the election of its officers and trustees for 2021.

Lister has worked for the Roslyn Landmark Society since 2012 serving as an administrative assistant and director. In addition to managing day-to-day activities, she has helped to generate more than $3 million in grants, awards and donations for the Roslyn Grist Mill Project and the organization. Lister is a resident of Huntington and has been in the development field for more than 10 years. Previously, she has worked for the Church and Schools of Saint Dominic in Oyster Bay and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Alumni Foundation in Kings Point.

“I am honored to be promoted to Executive Director,” Lister said. “I especially want to thank the board of trustees for this promotion and the continued support. Over the past year, the Roslyn Landmark Society has continued to thrive, and the Roslyn Grist Mill is on the way to restoration.

“It has been a real honor to serve as president over the last two years,” Kroplick said. “In 2021, I hope to grow our membership, expanding our new websiteroslynlandmarks.org and to continue our historic restoration and preservation efforts during the last year of my term.”

Vice president Fensterman is a resident of Roslyn and a practicing lawyer throughout the State of New

York. He received his law degree from Hofstra University School of Law, where he served as the President of the Hofstra Health Law Society for a period of approximately two years. Treasurer Fine is a Roslyn resident with a passion for history, preservation and restoration.

Mineola Celebrates Class Of 2021 With Senior Day

M

ineola High School celebrated its Class of 2021 on Friday, Jan. 15 with a Senior Day. The senior class came together as a whole for the first time since March to participate in an afternoon filled with games and activities.

“There are people that go into school on the opposite day as me that I haven’t seen in so long, so it was good to be able to get together,” senior Lucas Pomposelli said.

High school staff set up stations for students to rotate through including outdoor sports, ping pong, arts and crafts, karaoke, and a gaming space.

Seniors were the only class in the building, as 8th through 11th graders stayed home for remote instruction.

“Senior Day was an incredible opportunity to reunite our Class of 2021 for the first time since March,” Mineola High School Principal Dr. Whittney Smith said. “It was great to see our amazing students having fun, smiling, attending classes together and participating in an afternoon of fun activities that our amazing class advisors and faculty put together for them to enjoy.”

Syosset Swimming Team Competes For 50th Consecutive Win

he Syosset Varsity Boys Swimming and Diving team will be competing for its 50th consecutive win this week, facing the combined team of Levittown and East Meadow.

The team’s winning streak began six years ago on Jan. 13, 2015. The team entered the 2021 season as the two-time defending Nassau County Champions with 48 consecutive dual meet wins.

Commenting on what has helped the team achieve such an impressive number of consecutive wins, head coach Mike Cipollino said, “There is a real comradery on the team that has managed to pass from one generation to the next. The older swimmers encourage and motivate the younger swimmers, then the younger swimmers do the same for the next generation, and the cycle continues.”

racie Donaldson has lived in Glen Head for most of her life.

After attending college at Salve Regina University in Rhode Island and spending five months as part of the Disney College Program and working as a seasonal cast member at Walt Disney World in Florida, she came back to Glen Head—to her family and to all of her beloved communities. At age 32, she manages three careers while living in her childhood home—and her boyfriend, Anthony Cipriano (also a North Shore Biz Network member), lives just minutes away in Glen Cove.

“My parents haven’t asked me to leave yet,” Donaldson said. “And while Anthony and I are looking to move in together and get married, I live at home for my family, but also because I want to stay in this area. Millennials are leaving by the carload and I want to be here.”

“I have people who hire me for one project, I have people who hire me to create Facebook posts for them every single day and manage their account and I have people who call me every few weeks or months when they need me to create a graphic or write a few articles,” she explained.

Lidl Offers Extra Pay To Vaccinated Employees As states make COVID-19 vaccines more widely available, Lidl U.S. announced a new initiative to encourage its employees to get the vaccine. Lidl is providing $200 in extra pay to all of its U.S. employees, including those at its Plainview and East Meadow stores, who choose to receive the vaccine.

The additional payment will help offset the costs associated with vaccine administration, including travel costs and childcare. The company will also accommodate employee schedules for vaccine appointments.

This initiative builds on Lidl’s ongoing effort to protect the health of its employees. Last January, Lidl began to offer comprehensive medical coverage to all employees, regardless of the number of hours they work per week. In March, Lidl developed a first-in-the-industry program with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield to give all its employees access to COVID-19 medical coverage at no cost.

DEC Seeks Public Comment About Commander Square Site

The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is accepting public comments about the draft work plan for at the Commander Oil Terminal (1 Commander Square, Oyster Bay,) through Feb. 12. This draft work will investigate contamination at this site (site number C130244) as part of New York’s Brownfield Cleanup Program.

The investigation will be performed

by Commander Terminal Holdings LLC (“applicant”) with oversight by NYSDEC and the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH).

The 3.17-acre site is bordered on the west by Bay Avenue, on the south by White’s Creek, on the east

by Oyster Bay Harbor and on the north by a commercial property. The site is currently a major oil storage facility (MOSF) operated by Global

Commander Oyster Bay. It is currently developed with an office building, a garage building, 21 large-capacity above-ground storage tanks (combined totaling more than 400,000 gallon capacity), and a fueling rack.

Previous land uses for site included a saw mill, residential housing, a coal yard and an ice plant. Site redevelopment includes MOSF closure and planned mixed use development including commercial and residential.

Project documents are on repository at the Oyster Bay-East Norwich Public Library (89 E. Main St., Oyster Bay) and at Town of Oyster Bay Department of Environmental Resources (29 Spring St., Oyster Bay) for public viewing.

s families help older loved ones manage physical health conditions, they shouldn’t overlook mental health changes. Depression, anxiety and other mental health disorders are quite common among the older population.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) reports that one-in-four older adults will experience a mental disorder.

Here are questions families often ask:

Are changes in my loved one’s personality and behavior just a normal part of aging?

Health problems, the loss of a spouse, disability and even one’s changing role after retirement can lead to personality changes. But it’s important to discern between normal changes of aging and mental health disorders. The NCOA reports that left untreated, these disorders can lead to fatigue, illness and even suicide.

What are the signs that my loved one might have a mental health condition that should be addressed?

The changes can be gradual and subtle. A consultation with their doctor would be wise if your loved one is: • Sleeping much more or much less than usual.

• Feeling unusually confused, on edge, worried or afraid.

• Exhibiting low or no energy.

• Eating much more or less than usual.

• Experiencing prolonged grief that does not subside.

• Losing interest in things they once enjoyed.

• Feeling helpless or hopeless.

• Smoking, drinking or using drugs more than usual.

• Expressing thoughts of suicide.

How are my loved one’s physical health and mental health problems related?

Life-changing conditions such as hearing and vision loss or stroke can lead to depression and anxiety. Sometimes the relationship is what mental health specialists call “bidirectional cause and effect.” A

health condition such as heart disease, stroke, memory loss or diabetes can raise the risk of mental health problems. Mental health conditions affect not only the brain but also the whole body, and can hasten memory loss, raise blood pressure and cholesterol and worsen digestive disorders, diabetes and heart disease.

Side effects of medications also may play a role.

Can these mental health disorders be treated?

Yes. Your loved one’s doctor might recommend cognitive behavioral therapy, psychotherapy, interventions for substance misuse or other negative habits and instruction about lifestyle changes that promote positive mental health. Geriatric mental health professionals also may prescribe medications, taking into account a patient’s ability to manage medications, the other medications they take and how their age affects the way their body processes substances.

What if a loved one resists seeking help?

Even older adults who are conscientious about healthcare might avoid seeking treatment for depression and anxiety. Fearing stigma, they might try to ‘go it alone,’ thinking that seeking help is a sign of weakness. Reassure your loved one that, on the contrary, it’s a sign of strength to take charge in this way.

Substance misuse, gambling or other behavioral health problems may be especially hard to discuss.

If my loved one talks of suicide, what should I do?

Never discount statements such as “Everyone would be better off without me” or “Life’s not worth living.” Other warning signs include buying a firearm, stockpiling pills and giving away possessions. The American Psychological Association reports, older adults have the highest rates of suicide of any age group in the U.S., and depression is its foremost risk factor. Any family member who believes their loved one is in crisis to contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (800-273-8255) to talk to a trained counselor, day or night.

As a family caregiver, should I worry about my own mental health?

While it is a labor of love, serving as a family caregiver for an ill loved one or a loved one with disabilities can be very stressful and can raise the caregiver’s own risk of mental health problems—so much so that experts consider caregiving a risk factor for depression and anxiety. If you are a family caregiver and you’re feeling symptoms of distress, discuss your situation with your healthcare provider and your family.

The role of professional in-home care Professional in-home caregivers support the health of older clients— and that includes mental health. Here

are ways they can help: Coordinating care Most senior patients see a number of healthcare providers and they often have a complicated care routine to follow. Professional in-home caregivers help keep track of appointments, accompany clients to the doctor and pharmacy and provide health reminders.

A home environment that’s conducive to good mental health Professional caregivers help clients with bathing, dressing, grooming, meal preparation and housekeeping.

They provide companionship that wards off social isolation and loneliness and mental stimulation that lifts the spirits.

Partnering with family Family caregiver distress is greatly reduced when a family partners with professional caregivers. In-home caregivers keep the family up to date about their loved one’s condition, even when the family lives at a distance—a situation that can be very distressing as a senior’s needs change.

NASSAU IDA SHOULD REJECT TAX BREAKS FOR AMAZON WAREHOUSE PLAN Amazon’s proposal to build a last-mile delivery warehouse in Syosset has generated much concern from residents.

Although there are quality-of-life concerns associated with this project, such as noise and traffic, I must acknowledge their preliminary efforts to mitigate community impacts in ways previous applicants have not.

However, I cannot at this time support their application to receive Payments in Lieu of Taxes (PILOT) from the Nassau County Industrial Development Agency for this project—tax breaks for a trillion-dollar corporation that would ultimately be funded by Nassau taxpayers amidst an economic downturn and the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a lifelong resident of this community, I have witnessed firsthand that Syosset Park lots 251 and 252 (305 Robbins Ln., Syosset) have remained blighted and vacant for decades. To be clear, I fully support the redevelopment of this site. Accordingly,

I expect that any plans to develop the site must include a comprehensive environmental analysis and appropriate plan for remediating threats to land, water, and air quality. The health and safety of our residents remains my top priority and must remain the top priority of all who possess the authority to render such decisions affecting the future of this site.

However, as a Nassau County legislator, it is also my fiduciary responsibility to act in the best interests of the residents who have placed their confidence in me. Granting a tax break to a company that reported an income of $11.59 billion in 2019 and whose CEO and founder, Jeff Bezos, has been identified in published reports as one of the world’s wealthiest people, with a net worth of $182 billion, is simply unfathomable. To do so while hardworking Nassau County residents and small business owners struggle to pay property taxes, sales taxes, and

mortgages amid an economically devastating pandemic is unconscionable.

Perhaps more startling is the impact of Amazon facilities on local wages. As reported by Bloomberg, “where Amazon sets up shop, warehouses wages tend to fall. In 68 counties where Amazon has opened one of its largest facilities, average industry compensation slips by more than 6 percent during the facility’s first two years, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics” and wages take five years to recover to pre-Amazon levels. This trend will have harmful, long-term consequences for Nassau County families because it will make it implausible for Amazon’s Syosset employees to become Nassau County homeowners, driving property tax revenues elsewhere.

Furthermore, New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli recently announced that the NYS Common Retirement

Fund is seeking an independent audit to review and examine the impact of these and other company practices upon civil rights, equity, and inclusion.

Concerns regarding COVID-19 protocols and allegations of discrimination abound at many Amazon facilities.

There is no question that development is a critical component of much-needed growth and is vital to stimulating our local economy. However, we must be discerning in its use of taxpayer dollars when seeking to cultivate development, and I do not believe Amazon’s application to build a warehouse in our community rises to the level of deserving financial incentives funded by Nassau County taxpayers.

Making The Case For An Elected Assessor Newsday recently reported that taxes will rise for 65 percent of Nassau’s homeowners as a result of the county executive’s reassessment. After the mistakes and errors that have plagued reassessment, the public lacks confidence in the reassessment process and thousands of frustrated residents are unable to understand how their assessed values are calculated.

Earlier this month, the administration put forward a resolution to appoint a county official who lacks assessing experience and credentials to serve as assessor. In 2019, County Executive Laura Curran vetoed our local law that would have given Nassau voters the chance to decide whether to have an elected or appointed assessor.

The county executive’s sole reason for opposing the law was that an elected assessor would not have industry recognized qualifications and certifications. Now, the county executive seeks to appoint an

elected county assessor. New legislation has been submitted to place a referendum on the ballot in November 2021 to give the public the right to decide if Nassau will have an elected county assessor.

The bill filed earlier this month will be considered in the Legislature in February, and, if passed submitted to the county executive for her signature.

Until 2008, Nassau County

had an elected assessor. Since then, the county assessor has been an appointed political position made by the county executive with the approval of the county legislature. These appointed assessors have not been responsive to the public.

Under County Executive Curran, the county assessor has routinely evaded the legislature’s and the public’s questions and concerns about reassessment and has

been forced to admit to many missteps in the process.

We once again call on the county executive to let the voters decide who they want as their county assessor. Our taxpayers deserve greater transparency and a more reliable assessment system.

Nassau residents deserve a choice.

ith a new year comes new tactics as scammers continue trying to extract money from PSEG Long Island customers by impersonating employees on the phone and in person. PSEG Long Island urges customers to be alert for the telltale signs of a scam.

PSEG Long Island reports that scammers contacted more than 500 customers between Dec. 20, 2020 and Jan. 2, 2021, falsely alleging overdue balances and threatening to shut off power without immediate payment.

SIGNS OF POTENTIAL SCAM ACTIVITY:

• In person-demands Scammers may arrive at a home or business, flash a fake ID and/or claim to be a utility collection representative.

The impostors may wear “uniforms” or affix false company signs to their vehicles.

• Request for card information If a customer calls back with requested information, the caller asks the customer for the prepaid card’s number or gift-card PIN, which grants the scammer instant access to the card’s funds.

Evelyn Lynn (Reynolds) Bray, 78, of Haywagon Rd, passed away at her home, on Saturday, January 16, 2021.

Evelyn was very active in the Lakes Region Singers and volunteered for Lakes Region General Hospital for over 20 years.

She was a past member of the Selden, NY Fire Department Ladies’ Auxiliary.

Evelyn took great care of her family, including her devoted dog, Brandi. She loved watching all kinds of sports on TV, particularly the Red Sox and the Patriots. She loved to crochet and travel, and possessed the ability to make quick friends everywhere she went. Snowy college football games, stuffed bears and her grandchildren could always bring a smile to her face.

Evelyn is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Richard W. Bray Sr. of Gilford, her sons, Richard W. Bray Jr. of Gilford, Scott E. Bray and his wife Sarah Bray of Cuba, NY; her sisters, Judy R. Hogan and her husband Tom of Cold Spring Harbor, NY, Toni Lee Grey and her husband Ken of Frankfort, IL; her three grandchildren, Nicholas Bray, Samantha Bray and Allison Bray, two great-grandchildren; three nieces and nine nephews. Saladino Illuminates Town Hall For Human Trafficking Awareness Month

yster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and members of the Town Board partnered with The Safe Center LI to illuminate Town Hall in the color blue in recognition of Human Trafficking Awareness Month. January provides Americans an opportunity to raise public awareness of the trafficking and commercial exploitation of youth. The Safe Center LI, which is located in Bethpage, provides a fast and easy path to resources that assist in saving and changing the lives of the victims of domestic or dating abuse, child abuse, and rape and sexual assault.

“The town is proud to partner with The Safe Center for this important initiative, and we are dedicated to addressing the needs of children at-risk of or victims of human trafficking and commercial exploitation,” Saladino said.

Each year, it’s estimated that more than 100,000 children in the U.S. are at risk of being trafficked for commercial sex. While youth in any community can become a victim of trafficking and exploitation, certain youth are at greater risk. Youth at-risk often have unstable family situations and have little or no social supports. Runway and homeless youth, children involved

with child protective services and foster care, as well as Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) youth are also at increased risk for exploitation and trafficking.

At The Safe Center, counselors, who are trained in the dynamics of domestic violence, rape, and sexual assault and crisis intervention, respond 24 hours a day to the needs of victims.

POLICE REPORT Garden City Police Conduct Truck Inspections On Jan. 13, Garden City officers conducted a truck inspection on Clinton Road. Thirteen vehicles were inspected with three being placed out of service. Forty-five tickets were issued for various traffic and safety violations, including 18 overweight violations and one unsecured load violation. One operator was charged with driving with a suspended license.

Two Arrested For Robbery In Floral Park Third Squad detectives report the arrests of two individuals for a robbery that occurred on Jan. 16 at 4:52 p.m. in Floral Park.

According to detectives, Floral Park Police responded to a 911 call for a man with a knife at a 7-11 located at 287 Jericho Tpke. Upon arrival, officers were informed that an unknown male entered the store and went behind the counter. The subject displayed a knife and a struggled ensued with a male employee. The 44-year-old employee subdued the subject after suffering injuries. At this time, a female subject was placing

merchandise under her clothing, exited without making a payment and remained in the vicinity of the building. Thirty-four-year-old James Kovatch of Great Neck and 40-yearold Amanda Mathews of Brooklyn were arrested.

The victim suffered lacerations to his left shoulder, hip and a puncture to his right shoulder. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment.

Kovatch and Mathews are charged with first-degree robbery and two counts of second-degree robbery.

Kovatch has an additional charge of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. They were arraigned on Jan. 17.

Pedestrian Killed In Glen Cove Accident On Jan. 18 at 11:28 a.m., a motor vehicle struck a pedestrian at the intersection of Glen Street and Pearsall Ave in Glen Cove. The 87-year-old pedestrian was crossing Pearsall Ave. when the accident occurred.

The pedestrian, Vincenza Maruca of Glen Cove, suffered multiple injuries, including head and hip trauma. The aided was transported to Manhasset Hospital by Glen Cove EMS. The 67-year-old driver, also from Glen

Cove, remained at the scene of the accident.

“This was an unfortunate accident, there was no criminality involved. The driver remained at the scene and was cooperative with the investigation.”

Garden City Police Arrest Reckless Driver On Jan. 19, as a result of a traffic investigation on Clinton Road, a 44-year-old male was arrested by the Garden City Police Department for reckless driving, driving with a revoked license due to 30 license suspensions, possession of a forged registration, unregistered vehicle, uninsured vehicle and excessive speed, as well as multiple aggressive driving violations.

Locust Valley Man Sentenced For Fatal Ambulette Crash Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas announced that a Locust Valley man was recently sentenced to six to 12 years in prison for driving drunk and crashing into an ambulette in 2019, killing the patient inside.

Twenty-nine-year-old Alvaro Gutierrez-Garcia pleaded guilty

on Nov. 4 to aggravated vehicular homicide, second-degree assault and aggravated driving while intoxicated. Judge Robert McDonald sentenced the defendant to six to 12 years in prison.

On Sept. 1, 2019, at approximately 11:45 p.m., the defendant was driving a 1997 Cadillac sedan eastbound at a high rate of speed on Forest Avenue in Glen Cove, when he struck a private ambulette driving southbound on Walnut Avenue. The force of the crash caused the ambulette, which was transporting Denis Motherway to Glen Cove Hospital, to overturn.

Further investigation revealed that the defendant had a blood alcohol concentration of .22, approximately two hours after the crash.

Gutierrez-Garcia did not sustain any injuries during the crash, while his front-seat passenger suffered minor injuries. The EMT inside the ambulette suffered serious physical injuries, while the driver of the ambulette suffered minor injuries.

Motherway,the 85-year-old patient inside the ambulette, later died of injuries suffered during the crash.

Motherway was a retired NYPD detective whose son, Timothy Motherway, was also killed in a drunk driving crash in March 2009.
