Antiques And Garden Show Of Nashville The theme for this year’s Show is LEGACY. Simply put, legacy is something left for another generation. For many, legacy may mean wealth or possessions, but in the world of design, legacy reflects the artistry and values of beauty. For one generation to bestow craftsmanship to another generation is to leave a legacy. As the Antiques and Garden Show enters its fourth decade, we have created a speaker series which represents legacy through restoration, design, entertainment, and home. Each speaker brings their individual story of family but also a collective tale of creative vision. Be transported! As we travel from Europe to New York and back home to Tennessee, learn about generations of hard-working and talented aesthetes who are making homes, gardens, entertaining and travel a more complete experience. Thank you to the 400+ volunteers who bring vision into reality with their dedication to the Antiques and Garden Show. Over 150 dealers come from near and far to make this event so special. The collaboration among the corporate sponsors, benefactors, patrons and volunteers may never be fully understood by the thousands who walk through the artistic creations, modestly called GARDENS. Please know that we value greatly the labor of love you sow into the event. We could not imagine LEGACY without recognizing the Presenting Sponsor ADAC, for the enduring collaboration, as well as Andrew Byrd and TVV Capital for their 30 years of continued support. We are grateful and humbled by the energy and fundraising efforts on behalf of Cheekwood and ECON Charities. Every element of participation with the Antiques and Garden Show is a significant part of the success in contributing to our extraordinary city, Nashville. Thank you for making this Show the longest-running and largest show in the nation. We are delighted you are here!

FOUNDING SPONSOR

Andrew Byrd, TVV Capital How can one find a better way to enjoy a cold winter day than come inside to enjoy the flowers, gardens and beautiful antiques? Spring is just around the corner. In 1987-1988, the President of the Exchange Club (now Economic Club) of Nashville asked me to chair the Nashville Lawn & Garden Show. That year, it became the Nashville Lawn & Garden Fair. Working with the botanical staff at Cheekwood (Dick Page & Randall Lantz) along with Floyd McDonald, and with the Garden Club of Nashville (Betty B. Graham), we put on one of Nashville’s finest shows to educate all Nashvillians on their gardens and landscaping. Later, when the Antiques Show merged into the Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville, I headed Logistics for the first 1990 Show at the Nashville Convention Center. I have supported the Show ever since. As a result, more than a million dollars has been given by the Economic Club Charities to dozens of social service organizations across our city, bettering many people’s lives. Beauty, education and service to our community, how can one better summarize what our Show means? Our sponsorship is a very small part of an extraordinary Show helping to build an extraordinary city, Nashville, Tennessee. 4

Thank you for coming!

Andrew Byrd

Ballyfin Demesne: The Restoration of an Irish Country House Nina Campbell in conversation with Fred Krehbiel, Jim Reynolds and Colin Orchard Friday, January 31 • 11:00 am American businessman and art collector Fred Krehbiel, along with Irish Master Gardener Jim Reynolds and English Interior Designer Colin Orchard, appear together for the first time to share the restoration odyssey of Ireland’s Ballyfin, an 1820’s Regency manor house situated on 614 acres in the Irish Midlands. Moderator Nina Campbell, world-renowned interior designer, guides the conversation among the three visionaries who dedicated a decade to the renovation of Ballyfin—a testament to Irish art and architecture. The home was built for Sir Charles Coote and remained in the family for 100 years until the owners sold the house to the Patrician Brothers who ran a much-loved school. When Mr. Krehbiel purchased the house in 2002, he and Mr. Reynolds greeted the project with enthusiasm because the “pristine state of ruin” allowed them the aesthetic authority to return the house and grounds to the original splendor of a 19th century Irish country house built for entertaining. Today Ballyfin is a five-star luxury hotel featuring 21 individually designed rooms and suites, lavish interiors decorated with Irish art and antiques, and rolling private grounds including a man-made 28-acre lake, ancient woods, follies and grottoes. Ballyfin continues its legacy of hospitality, where former pupils are now employed in the great house and greet visitors from all over the world with a warm Irish welcome.

“We have a special place for historic houses in a ruinous state. Nothing better than wandering past falling columns into dark, damp rooms with collapsing ceiling, rotting floors, broken windows yet still so magnificent and filled with stories of past glories, eccentric owners, impending disasters. These places call out to be remembered and restored to the life they once knew. BALLYFIN’s call had to be answered and we did!” —Fred Krehbiel Fred Krehbiel is the owner of Ballyfin, considered the most lavish Regency mansion in Ireland. Mr. Krehbiel is credited with saving one of Ireland’s most endangered great houses while highlighting the talent of Irish craftsmen whose traditional building skills were necessary to repair elaborate inlaid floors, gilding, and stucco work. Every single aspect of the house from the roof down required attention. Mr. Krehbiel’s devotion to detail included locating original Coote family portraits, china and silver.

13

Jim Reynolds serves as the Managing Director at Ballyfin Demesne. Mr. Reynolds is also well-known in Ireland for his personal gardens, Butterstream, which received the prestigious “two-star” rating from the Good Gardens Guide in the UK. Mr. Reynolds’ horticultural knowledge and individual talent are seen in all of his projects, and especially in the restoration of the gardens and demesne at Ballyfin. Mr. Reynolds served as Director of the Restoration at Ballyfin. A former archaeologist, Mr. Reynolds possesses immense knowledge and passion for the medieval period, social history and the origins of garden design.

Colin Orchard is a London-based interior designer particularly well-known for his adaptation of the classic country-house style. A former Colefax & Fowler designer, Mr. Orchard trained under the firm’s decorating doyenne Imogen Taylor for eight years. Soon thereafter, he created his own Chelsea-based firm in London. Rising to the modern-day challenge at Ballyfin, Mr. Orchard was tasked with researching historical colors, furniture collections, lighting plans, decorations and furnishings. With Mr. Krehbiel’s extensive collection of decorative and fine arts, as well as with carefully curated antiques sourced from England and Ireland, Mr. Orchard relaunched the Irish country house of Ballyfin into the #1 Top Resort Hotel in the UK and Ireland for 2018.

Nina Campbell is one of the world’s most respected and influential interior designers. Ms. Campbell started her design career at the age of 19 when she worked as an assistant to John Fowler at the prestigious Sybil Colefax & John Fowler Company. Her design expertise is unparalleled and her client list reads like an international ’Who’s Who’. Renowned for her contagious wit and brilliant sense of personal style, her interiors appeal to both young and old and work perfectly in both contemporary and traditional settings.

Books are available for purchase in the Show floor lobby during the Show and outside the Davidson Ballroom after this lecture.

LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE LECTURE

Building Architecture into Landscape: Bold Designs for Natural Beauty A lecture by Martin Wirtz, Principal of Wirtz International Landscape Architects Friday, January 31 • 2:00 pm Second generation landscape designer Martin Wirtz shares family history and firm philosophy in exploring the inspiration for balancing classic formality with contemporary garden style. Whether designing gardens for public spaces, corporate headquarters, museums, royal families, or private clients, the Wirtz name is synonymous with bold gestures, sculptural hedges, and unexpected plant selection. Each design is one-of-a-kind yet recognizable with iconic Wirtz details. Martin’s father, the late Jacques Wirtz, founded Wirtz International and was compared to André le Nôtre, the designer of the gardens of Versailles. For the past 25 years, Martin, and brother Peter, have led Wirtz International and received worldwide acclaim for projects completed in Europe, Asia and the United States. SPONSORED BY

Martin Wirtz is an acclaimed landscape architect, who along with his brother Peter Wirtz, and his late father Jacques Wirtz, built the landscape architecture firm, Wirtz International, the largest of its kind in Belgium. Wirtz International has transformed the concept of landscape experience with a combination of classical design elements intersecting with the modern taste of large gestures. An iconic and returning aspect in Wirtz projects is the unconventional and sculptural use of clipped trees and hedges. The firm has redesigned the Carrousel Garden which links the Louvre to the Tuileries in Paris, designed Jubilee Park in Canary Wharf in London, and restored and expanded the gardens of the 11th century Alnwick Castle for the 12th Duchess of Northumberland. Wirtz International has designed private gardens throughout Europe and in the United States has worked in California, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Chicago, and Seattle.

Books are available for purchase in the Show floor lobby during the Show and outside the Davidson Ballroom after this lecture.

2020 GARDEN DESIGNERS

Estate Entrance Piers The Vintage Millworks manufacturing process mirrors the Cotswold School of Arts and Crafts tradition of combining handwork and machinery to achieve beautifully built furniture. The design for the Show Entrance is inspired by the stone gate piers announcing the arrival at Ballyfin. James Dunn begins with hand drawings which are progressed through two and three dimensions with computer assistance to make precise cuttings. The skilled craftsmen and craftswomen at Vintage Millworks assemble each piece by hand. The Piers are finished with several layers of primer and paint hand brushed in a mixture of sand to create a weathered limestone. The finish technique, rustication, has historical precedent as George Washington used this same process at Mount Vernon to make exterior walls made of wood look like stone. The Piers are decorated with American eagles and wrought iron ring pulls which were made locally by artisan blacksmiths.

James E. Dunn, Founder of Vintage Millworks, Inc. In 1987, James founded Vintage Millworks, Inc.; focusing this organization and team of craftsmen on design and fabrication of custom architectural millwork. Primary objectives were, and continue to be utilizing appropriate materials, techniques, application, proportion, and design. Inspired by early childhood experiences on his grandparents’ farm in rural Michigan, his youthful vision of sustainable living would incorporate reclaimed old growth lumber from salvaged barns and house parts into new classical architectural millwork, cabinetry, and furniture. As a craftsman, formally trained in crafting fine furniture, cabinetmaking and boatbuilding, James settled in middle Tennessee in 1975 to pursue his passion of becoming a self-supporting artisan. The love of classical architecture, beautiful landscapes, garden design and their effects on the human condition continue to inspire and guide his principles and his life’s work. Electric Flora is a floral design company started by Nashville’s own Phillipe Chadwick and his partner Nick Maynard. Combining expertise in floral design, marketing, and logistics, the duo produce vibrant and elegant entertaining for any event. Phillipe is a catalog of knowledge about plants and flowers with his love for gardening ranging from heirloom vegetables to Japanese horticulture.

60 YEARS OF INSPIRATION Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, Cheekwood is considered one of the finest American Country Place Era estates in the nation today. Once the family home of Mabel and Leslie Cheek, this extraordinary 1930s estate, with its Georgian mansion and 55 acres of cultivated gardens and expansive vistas, today serves the public as a botanic garden, historic home and museum. Visit this weekend to experience the sights, sounds, and sensations of a bygone era. Explore the Historic Mansion & Museum featuring period rooms and art galleries with three exhibitions currently on display including Orchids in the Mansion, Martin Shallenberger Artist-in-Residence: Hiroshi Sato and the 2020 Middle Tennessee Scholastic Art Awards.

Enrich your Antiques & Garden Show experience with a visit to Cheekwood, Nashville’s own national treasure. 42

Present your Antiques & Garden Show ticket for HALF-PRICE ADMISSION to Cheekwood through March 1, 2020.

Discover the new Cheekwood. Cheekwood is celebrating its 60th year serving the public with monumental exhibits, enhancements and new features breathing fresh life into the institution’s mission to stimulate the mind and nurture the spirit.

There’s no festival in Nashville more beautiful than Cheekwood In Bloom. From March 7 to April 5, more than 150,000 blooming bulbs spill from our gardens and create a color experience you won’t forget.

Inspired by Cheekwood’s historic landscape and architecture, the Bracken Foundation Children’s Garden opens March 7 and offers children a new interactive outdoor experience focused on imaginative play to inspire interest in art and nature.

Cited as an enduring symbol of the friendship between Tennessee and Japan, the Shōmu-en, Blevins Japanese Garden will re-open on March 28 with significant enhancements. The garden has been called one of the most original Japanese Gardens in North America and features a bamboo forest.

CELEBRATING 100 YEARS Sponsoring the Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville Since 1991

Who We Are The Economic Club of Nashville (ECON) provides a dynamic forum at weekly lunch meetings for business and community leaders to identify and discuss economic, social or political issues of special interest to Nashvillians. Members seek to interact with business leaders and government officials and support key nonprofit organizations that contribute to the quality of life in the Greater Nashville area.

Where We Came From ECON draws its history and tradition from the Exchange Club of Nashville. One of the largest clubs of the national organization, the Nashville Chapter was chartered on April 16, 1920, to support the national mission: “Exchange, America’s Premier Service Club, working to make our communities better places to live.” This mission resonates with members of the new club, which continues many of the existing initiatives.

Moving Forward ECON will continue in its support of The Family Center as well as provide generous support to many charities in Nashville. In 2014, ECON formed the Cultural Assistance Program (CAP) to provide opportunities for children and their families to participate in Nashville’s cultural and arts programs. Since 1991, ECON and Cheekwood have co-sponsored the annual Antiques & Garden Show of Nashville. This show has become the Club’s main fundraising activity, allowing ECON Charities, Inc., to contribute more than $1.5 million to local charities.

A History of Service ECON has been instrumental in helping make Nashville the great city that it is today. The list of achievements in its early years includes: • Widening Church Street west of the viaduct and the extension of Ninth Avenue from Church Street to Union Station, without cost to the city of Nashville; • The increase of parking facilities at Union Station; • The beautification of Memorial Park opposite the state Capitol; • The first overall street marking program in Nashville; • Building children’s playgrounds at the Davidson County Tuberculosis Hospital; • Equipping the Vanderbilt band with its first uniforms; • Sponsoring the first successful fundraising campaign for the American Red Cross conducted in Nashville; • Providing support for the public development of Cheekwood in 1960, transforming the private residence into a public garden and art museum. ECON Charities proudly supports The Family Center of Nashville and the ECON Charities’ Cultural Assistance Program. ECON is a founding member of The Family Center and has been one of its largest individual supporters for more than 35 years. Today ECON Charities provides more in charitable giving each year than any other single group beyond government and individual donors. The Family Center’s mission is to break multi-generational cycles of child abuse, neglect, & trauma by empowering parents to raise children who can then reach their highest potential. The ECON Charities’ Cultural Assistance Program (CAP) makes it possible for lower-income families to attend cultural events and activities offered by selected arts organizations in Nashville. These grants cover the costs of tickets, transportation, child-care—anything that might deter families from experiencing arts programs together. It is one of the few like it in the country. Last year alone, more than 1200 family members attended 35 visual and performing arts programs across our city. Participating arts organizations include: Cheekwood; Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, Frist Center for Visual Arts; Nashville Ballet; Nashville Children’s Theatre; Nashville Opera; Nashville Symphony; Tennessee Performing Arts Center. To date, family partners have included: Oasis; Nashville After Zone Alliance; St. Luke’s Community House and Harvest Hands.
