Champagne - A New Year’s Favorite Is A Favorite With Collectors!

Champagne is the drink of choice on New Year’s Eve and for special occasions with weddings being the first that comes to mind. The ceremony of popping the cork and pouring the golden, effervescent fluid is unsurpassed by any other drink. For the regular Champagne drinker as well the casual enthusiast, collecting Champagne memorabilia and tools can be a pleasurable

experience. There are a wide variety of objects to search for. Champagne houses enlisted the services of artists to design advertising for them in the late 19th century. These gorgeous works of art can be found on posters, postcards, billboards, fans, and more. The appeal of Champagne to the ladies was certainly a motivation to use the images on folding fans for not only a gentle wave to cool, but to also do a little coquettish flirting. Art on fans includes waiters pouring Champagne, girls raising their glasses in toasts, clowns, bottles, couples dining and dancing, and much more. They are a top choice for the Champagne collector for the colorful display they can make. There are many themes on

Champagne bottle labels can also find a home q u e n t l y with the labelologist. Beginning in the early 19th century, inventors came up with numerous designs and functions for taps making the collector’s hunt for the many variations a challenge. Today’s Champagne bottles can usually be found with the wire twisted at the bottom of the foil wrap. To open the bottle, one typically untwists the wire, rips off the foil, and pushes against the base of the mushroom shape cork to a loud pop and, perhaps, a little bubbling over. able tools. Nippers or hooks were used to cut or break the wire. A knife with a curved hook was used to cut the foil. Easers and levers were used to gently pry the cork up. Or a pliers-like cork grip some of which resemble nutcrackers could be used to grasp the cork and gently twist it out of the bottle. Corkscrews are often shown in pictures of Champagne bottle opening but the aforementioned are far better, safer ways to get to the bubbly. Here’s to your health!!! market turnaround that will happen! So, my forecast is not for sunny and 90, but for a pretty nice day with maybe a few showers but more good weather than bad. The auction circuit is hot right now, and I think it will expand as collectors see the chance to sell long-held items for better prices than in the past. That will, hopefully, spur buyers and we are off to the races. And thus I paraphrase the Who in saying that I think 2012 is going to be a good year!

Okay, so maybe I am overly optimistic about where things are going but there are some good signs out there for sure. My wife works in retail, and she reported - as did the major media sources - that holiday sales are up this year. Why would this be the case if things are still gloomy? Because folks are tired of this. They want to stretch their limits a bit, and the holidays are a starting point. I think if there are signs of moderate growth in the economy, people will be anxious to jump onto the bandwagon and we will see some strong sales in the antiques world. Regular readers know that I am no fan of the mantra that “antiques are a luxury item.” Of course, to a hardcore collector, they are a necessity but even for the casual buyer they have an importance beyond just that of conspicuous consumption. Antiques represent a tie to the past that gives us a

most dealers want to move merchandise right now, and so there is a lot of choice out there. What am I buying? Hmm…without betraying my cards too much….books printed before 1800, ancient and medieval coins (a super bargain thanks to free trade), oil paintings of industrial scenes, English stoneware, flow blue and transferware, and of course trains for my daughter Jane. I think all of them are horribly undervalued, and now is a chance to get some things before the eventual
sense of security, especially when the world around us seems so uncertain. I think this is why the “country look” has never gone out of style…regardless of whether you live in an urban, rural or suburban area. It is like macaroni and cheese….comfort living - especially in tough times. Antiques are the ultimate in frugality as well. Buying and selling antiques is recycling, on a big scale. Living with used stuff…and hey is that not what antiques are?…is a way of minimizing your carbon footprint (the kiln that fired that piece of stoneware burned 200 years ago) while also buying local and preserving the past. It’s a (good) triple whammy. I was at a holiday party a few weeks back and ran into two old friends. One was a book dealer, and he was talking about how it really is a buyer’s market. That is so true! Every dealer that I know wants to deal. Sure there are the museum dealers…you know…the ones who price stuff to the nines because their spouse won’t allow it in the house, so they try and sell it, but only at an outrageous price. But beyond those folks,

A Pair Of Glass Candlesticks This week we valued a Pair of “Palace� or “Moon and Star� patterned molded American Glass Candlesticks. They are 9.25 in. high. The general opinion is the L. E. Smith made the pink colored candlesticks in the mid twentieth century. The L. E. Smith Glass Company started making pressed glass in the late 1940s. In the 1960s catalogs from Smith Glass show the “Moon and Star� glass in various colors, although they are thought to have made the pattern for s o m e t i m e . Joseph Weishar of the Island Mould Company was asked to make some new Moon and Star molds in
about 1962, for which Smith’s paid royalties for each piece produced. They are still making the same pattern today. The pattern started in 1874 when Adams and Co. introduced what was then called the “Palace� pattern, a round depression repenting the moon with a star in the middle. The Weishar company which is still going today, started to reproduce the Moon and Star pattern in 1988, producing miniature water sets in various colors and a collectable line in 1993. These wares are marked with the Weishar signature. We valued the pair at $100 to $150.

The treasure packed sale will take place at the Peoples Light & Theater Company in M a l v e r n , Pennsylvania, a city situated in e a s t e r n Pennsylvania, not far off of Interstate 76 and just west of Philadelphia. “We’re billing this as a holiday auction, as it’s coming close on the heels of Christmas,” said Gordon Converse. “The week b e t w e e n Christmas and New Year’s is typically kind of quiet — a good time to buy.” Speaking of time, the sale will feature a major collection of 19thcentury American clocks, to go with a great general selection of other

Howard & Company banjo #4 timepiece made in the late 19th century and housed in a splendid rosewood Waltham girandole clock with unusual added thermometer in the throat (estimate $20,000 to $30,000).
case, 32 inches tall by 13-1/2 inches wide (estimate $1,500 to $3,000). • A solid mahogany chime hall clock by Elite, with the tubular “bells” striking the quarter hours on nine tubes and with triple chime selection. The case is carved in the traditional style, and the clock is majestic at 101 inches tall (estimate $2,000 to $3,500). • A 90-inch-tall, early 19thcentury tall case clock with an engraved brass dial signed “W. Hunter, Dunssermiln,” with seconds bit and calendar.
Housed in a mahogany case, with 8-day bell strike movement in very good condition (estimate $2,000 to $3,000). Asian objects will include several fine “blue and white” porcelains, plus a wide array of other porcelains and artifacts. Many Asian objects date to the 19th century, while other examples are from prior dynasties. Jade and jade-related jewelry will also be sold. Porcelain panels bound in wood will be coveted for their decorative qualities; several examples of these will be offered. While most Asian objects are Chinese in origin, there will also be a selection of Japanese porcelain and fine arts. Of special interest will be about 19 lots of highly collectible carved ivories (including Netsukes and Japanese ivory carvings of miniature fruit), signed numbered prints by Kiyoshi Saito, framed prints by Toyokuni, and a framed wood block print of a geisha. The fine art category will feature signed prints by Andrew Wyeth and Salvador Dali, a lithographic print after Georges Braque, and a framed lithograph by Joseph Floch. About 100 clocks will be sold, most of them late 19th-century wall clocks. Also included are two “wagon spring” clocks and miniature shelf clocks dating prior to the 1840s. Other examples include “ripple” molded shelf clocks and a rare “off center” pendulum pillar and scroll model, and a very rare torsion pendulum clock by Aaron Dodd Crane. Other European examples include a musical Austrian mantel clock, a “world time” wall timepiece in an elaborately carved walnut case from Austria, and examples of French and German clock making. Following is a list of just a few clocks expected to generate considerable bidder interest: • A very rare Wa l t h a m girandole clock, serial number 1 of less than 50. A tremendous amount of interest was registered for the rare US Lewis Gun MK VI made by Savage (C&R). Estimated at $10,000 to 15,000, it topped out at $40,825. A staple of almost any offering of Class III are the Thompson submachine guns. One example estimated at $15,000 to $20,000 went out at $24,150. A number of Ingram Mac-10s were consigned from one single source. Most were still in their original wrapping paper from 1971 with numerous extra clips. Each was estimated at $2,000 to $3,000 and most realized $4,300. Julia’s has gotten some very strong prices for original Pedersen devices in the past and an Extremely Rare Model 1918 Mark I Pedersen Device with can was no exception. This one, estimated at $15,000 to $25,000 realized $34,500. A number of rare Springfield target rifles included a Model 1903 Sporter Secretary of Navy trophy rifle from 1936 with original insert silver medallion stating, “Secretary Of Navy’s Rifle Trophy / Won By Midshipman / William Blenman U.S.N. 1936.” Estimated at $7,500 to $12,500, it sold for $10,350. Collectors in a quest to find rare antique toys in superior condition struck gold at Bertoia’s November 11 to 12 Toys on World Tour auction, which realized $1,550,000 (inclusive of 15 percent buyer’s premium). The 1,502-lot sale was very well attended, with phone bidders keeping Bertoia’s staff members constantly engaged. Internet bidding played a major role in the auction’s success, as well. The daily average of purchases attributable to online buyers was 27.4 percent. Cast-iron toys proved to be a category with resiliency, as evidenced by the setting of several world auction records. “I would say that at this auction cast iron was not only back, but back to the future. At Julia’s last auction, a new world record of $184,000 was established for a Kentucky rifle.
