Hake’s To Salute Pop Culture Milestones With Auction Of Political And Entertainment Memorabilia, Toys, Comic Strip And Cartoon Art Sale To Run From Nov. 11 to 13 rom Mickey Mouse to Picasso, Spider-Man to JFK, Hake’s will make a stop at nearly every popular collecting corner during its Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Nov. 11 to 13, auction, with a few unexpected surprises along the way. A trusted source for entertainment memorabilia and historical Americana since 1967, Hake’s consistently lives up to its reputation as a knowledgeable, trustworthy source for authentic popculture collectibles. The November absentee-auction event includes a number of antique and vintage items that even Hake’s own experts have never handled before. The political memorabilia category is summarized by a statement from none other than Hake’s founder, Ted Hake, who described it as “the overall best political section we have cataloged in 47 years of operation.” “That’s saying something, when you consider that political items have been the cornerstone of almost every catalog we’ve produced since the beginning,” commented Hake’s president, Alex Winter. “Also, Ted is the author of several definitive price guides for political items. He doesn’t use the term ‘rare’ unless it’s deserved.” On the subject of rare politicals, a prime example would be the card Abraham Lincoln autographed and dated Sept. 24, 1863 with an inscription to “A.R. Walker.” Was Walker an associate, friend or constituent? “We don’t know the answer to that,” said Hake, “but what we do know is that Lincoln had many other things on his mind that day, including sending a telegram to his wife in New York City to notify her that her brother-in-law had been among those killed in a Civil War battle at Chattanooga.” Accompanied by a JSA letter of authenticity and Hake’s COA, the card is

The vibrant original artwork is estimated at $35,000$50,000. Many auction lots contain prized original comic strip art and cels. Among the highlights are three pen-and-ink daily strips by premier Mickey Mouse artist Floyd Gottfredson. One of them, dated Aug. 14, 1934, contains an installment of the “Bobo the Elephant” storyline in which Mickey and Minnie Mouse harbor the pachyderm and protect him from others who want to take him away. Annotated by the artist in blue pencil, this artwork was obtained by the consignor as a child in the 1950s and is fresh to the collecting community. Its estimate, like the estimate for the original art from a second “Bobo the Elephant” strip, dated Sept. 28, 1934, is $10,000-$20,000. Original art for a third Gottfredson strip, dated March 9, 1934 and also fresh to the market, illustrates an installment of “The Captive Castaways” storyline. In this adventure, Mickey and Minnie Mouse are taken aboard a smugglers’ ship by the evil Pegleg Pete. The estimate is $5,000-$10,000. Cels include two rare

Thanks to Ken Burns’ recently released TV documentary “The Roosevelts,” a sharper focus has been cast on the political career of Theodore Roosevelt, who ran as the Progressive Party’s Presidential candidate in 1912 together with VP hopeful Hiram Johnson. An extremely scarce, sepia real-photo jugate button of the running mates with a bull moose logo is entered in Hake’s sale with a $2,000-$5,000 estimate. A visually appealing button in the classic 1.25-inch size, it comes with provenance from the prestigious Don and Mildred Wright collection. Within the political memorabilia hobby, probably fewer than six examples are known of a “Jack Once More in ‘64” fourinch button produced in anticipation of John F. Kennedy’s 1964 campaign. “Buttons of this type rarely come to auction. The only other one we could document from the last five years or so was severely spotted,” said Hake. The estimate is $2,000-$5,000. Representing a unique buying opportunity for art collectors is a 23-by-24-inch (framed) original artwork by Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881-1973) titled “Soleil de Mediterranee” (Mediterranean Sunshine). The work depicts the shining sun of the French Riviera above the Mediterranean Sea. Peter Parker, aka The Amazing SpiderMan, made his debut appearance in the 1962 Marvel comic book Amazing Fantasy (AF) #15. A key Silver Age comic, AF #15 is pursued by collectors in any condition; a 9.6 copy has sold for as much as $1 million dollars. Hake’s will offer an issue that was CGC-certified 5.0 VG/Fine with a presale estimate of $10,000-$20,000. From the horror movie realm, few classics eclipse the 1935 film “Werewolf of London” when it comes to lobby cards. Hake’s will present at auction not one, but six original Werewolf lobby cards from the series of eight issued by Universal Pictures. “Usually the title card is the most valuable in a set of lobby cards, but one particular Wolfman card in our sale is, by far, the hardest one to obtain. It could be the one that a lot of collectors need in order to complete their set,” said Winter. “It came from one of our earliest customers, who worked in a bookstore and started collecting ephemera many years ago.” Bidding will start at $2,000 and is expected to reach $5,000-$10,000. Toy collectors can always count on a Hake’s to bring fresh collections to the open market. The November auction includes a superb private collection of toys of all types, including prototypes, vehicles, windups and more. The collection will be on display at the Saturday, Nov. 1, Allentown, Pa., Antique Toy Show and Sale. (Continued on page 7)

Gratz Gallery & Conservation Studio is excited to announce that it has opened expanded facilities. Gratz Gallery’s new home will be located on a 10-acre farm right outside of Doylestown, Pa. Perhaps most exciting, for the first time in its 30 year history, the gallery will be able to offer its clients a chance to visit the conservation studio. This will allow customers to see painting transformations firsthand as they are taking place. The expanded gallery space will allow the staff to exhibit a larger number of paintings and provide a more intimate viewing atmosphere for patrons. “Our years in Doylestown’s Historic District have been wonderful, and we will always recall them fondly. Since we opened Gratz Gallery in New Hope, we have long hoped of moving the gallery to a space where it can exist side-by-side with the Conservation Studio. Conservation is such an important part of our business and having the two halves of Gratz Gallery available for

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (the largest single group of the artist’s paintings); 69 works by Paul Cézanne; important paintings by Vincent Van Gogh and Georges Seurat; 59 works by Henri Matisse; 46 works by Pablo Picasso; 16 works by Amedeo Modigliani; and 125 African sculptures, masks and tools. The Barnes Foundation’s Art and Aesthetics programs engage diverse audiences. These programs, on-site, online, and in Philadelphia communities, advance the mission through progressive interdisciplinary teaching and learning. In May 2012, the Barnes Foundation opened a new facility on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway designed by Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects. The Philadelphia campus is home to the Foundation’s world-famous art collection and changing exhibitions in its 5,000-square-foot Roberts Gallery. The Barnes Arboretum in Merion contains more than 2,000 varieties of trees and woody plants, including 31 state champion trees. Founded in the 1880s by Joseph Lapsley Wilson and expanded under the direction of Laura Barnes, the collection includes a fern-leaf beech (Fagus sylvatica ‘Laciniata’), a dove tree (Davidia involucrata), a monkey-puzzle tree (Araucaria araucana), and a redwood (Sequoia sempervirens). Inaugurated in 1940 by Mrs. Barnes, the Arboretum School offers a comprehensive three-year certificate course in botanical science, horticultural practice, garden aesthetics, and design. The Foundation’s archives are also located at the Merion campus. For more information, visit www.barnesfoundation.org.

SHOPS & CENTERS COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: The Nature Of Antiques Co-Ops belly-up during the Depression. So, to find a piece in the mall was a surprise and especially since the price was incredibly reasonable. As I walked on, clutching the plate in my hot little hands, I realized that there was a change in the mall. The railroad china dealer who had been there and cornering the market on such items was now gone! With his departure, the balance returned to the mall, and I got to find a treasure. Antiques malls are wonderful places to hunt, and I encourage you on a cold and rainy November afternoon to hop in the car and head to your closest one. You may be surprised at what you find!

I love antiques co-ops! They are one of my favorite places, and when you have kids and extensive job responsibilities, they are one of the best places to buy antiques. Sure, I have heard the moans and decades-old complaints from some collectors that the co-ops were going to ruin the antiques business. They would sell only “junk and drive small shops out of business. Such comments I chalk up to curmudgeons who never understood that retail, like life, does evolve and change. So what is a co-op? It is where a group of dealers come together, often under an outside manager or owner, and show and sell their wares. Unlike an antiques show where each dealer takes care of their own transactions, coops use one cashier who

the dealer has a perfect right to purchase things from fellow dealers. However, it does mean that it is unlikely that you will find those specialized items other than in the one booth. Recently, I was in a mall that I regularly patronize. One of the subject areas that I collect is railroad china and glassware. In this mall, I never saw any examples of it for sale except in the booth of one very specialized collector. He or she had the market cornered. So on this day, I happened upon a super rare plate from the Denver and Rio Grande (D&RG) Railroad. D&RG china is not common, as the original line went

processes sales for everyone. The co-op phenomenon has gone through peaks and valleys. In the early years, co-ops attracted lots of part-time hobbyists who were getting rid of Aunt Gracie’s estate, so they took a booth to sell everything. Those folks did not usually last too long as they discovered that selling antiques was much tougher than it looked. In post 2008, we saw another group of dealers fall away from the coops as a result of the recession/depression. The biggest challenge to coops today is not about the dealers but rather the value of their real estate. I have seen many a good co-op disappear, often overnight, because their building was sold for a new project. Most co-op dealers handle a wide range of materials. Sure, they might prefer formal over folk or china over postcards but they will usually carry a broad range of items in their booth to appeal to a wide range of customers. Often, a specialist dealer will set up at a mall and scope out items in his or her specialty in other booths in the mall. There is nothing wrong with this, and

Baby Talk: Cards And Collectibles Of The Baby Boom “Baby face. . .you’ve got the cutest little baby face. . .” Did prehistoric man carve news of the latest little Flintstone on the walls of his family cave? We’ll never know, but one thing’s for certain: throughout the ages, whenever there’s a been new face in the nursery, mom and dad have been eager to tell the world! By the time the baby boom started booming, if you had an addition to the family, you sent out an announcement ... and if you received an announcement, you sent a congratulatory card (preferably with a gift). Baby card themes are reflective of their era. During the World War II years, with a keep-the-home-fires burning atmosphere sweeping the

Announcing the new arrival! Here is a montage of baby announcements from the early 1950s.

country, rosy-cheeked infants in cozy, peaceful nurseries were a popular cover image. After the war, baby greetings grew more whimsical. The entire family was often pictured in colorful, cartoon-like art, complete with a sprightly, up-to-the-minute message. Baby cards gave greeting card manufacturers plenty of leeway for design flourishes. Felt-like “flocking” adorned every type of illustration, from baby blankets to stuffed bunnies. Ribbon, foil, pipe cleaners, quilting, embossing, and glitter accented the visuals. Many cards featured “peek-a-boo” covers: a cutout area, in the shape of a window or a wrapped present, framed the winsome face of a smiling infant. There were even cards with concealed springs, allowing an attached paper cradle to rock or a baby scale to bounce. Many collectors enjoy not only the delightful baby card visuals, with their images of a not-so-distant yesteryear, but also the original handwritten messages (One sender penned this sure-fire indicator of the postwar baby boom: “Congratulations on your first. We’ll soon be welcoming our seventh!”). Baby gifts of bygone days

are also cherished collectibles. Some are mementos of a personal or family heritage, but many are collected simply because of a fondness for their theme or styling. Among the most commonly found: figural vases and planters. Their original bouquets brought welcome cheer, back when mom-and-baby’s hospital stay was much longer than it is today. Also popular: decorative items intended to brighten up baby’s room, including ceramic depictions of contented children, nursery rhyme characters, and guardian angels. Useful items were always welcome, from baby spoons, egg cups, milk mugs, and savings banks to that aquaand-yellow no-spill icon of 1950s childhood, the “Tommee Tippee Cup.” Its logo: a bibbed bear cub, drinking from (what else?) his very own “Tommee Tippee.” When in doubt, the determined gift-giver could always fall back on toys. Whether cuddly teddy bears for bedtime or rubber duckies for the bath, these were destined for a lifetime of love. A perennial favorite for mid-century gift-giving was the “baby book.” Heartwarming illustrations surrounded entry lines for progress benchmarks (“baby’s family tree,” “baby’s weight chart,” and “baby’s first steps”). Inviting blank pages begged to be pasted full of photos, cards, and little locks of hair, or decorated with the outline of

baby’s hand. In today’s Internet age, many families utilize social media to announce their latest addition (72 percent at last count). The wonders of photo editing mean that baby’s Dumbo-like ears or premature crow’s-feet can be handily touched up before “pix” are sent out to grandma and grandpa. But, while not the sole means of happy communication it once was, the greeting card industry continues to churn out 1.5 billion cards a year, with 20 baby cards sent for every e-card. And, as the deluge of babycentric clothing, toy, and related paraphernalia stores indicates somebody besides mom and dad must be buying all those playpens. Among today’s collectors, baby artifacts of yesterday remain both popular and

William F. Harrah Collection Of Antique CONCEPTS 1 AUCTION HOUSE 1125 Arnold Avenue, Gambling Machines Draws Heavy Hitters Point Pleasant, NJ 08742

EVERY 2ND SATURDAY & LAST SATURDAY OF THE MONTH AT 9:30 A.M.

Morphy’s And Victorian Casino Antiques’ Debut Auction Tops $2.4 Million If any name is synonymous with Las Vegas, it’s “Harrah in particular, as in William F. Harrah (1911-78), visionary founder of Harrah’s Hotel and Casinos. So it came as no surprise when antique and vintage gambling

machines from Harrah’s personal collection landed in sixfigure territory in Victorian Casino Antiques’ (VCA) Sept. 19 to 21 auction, the first event conducted since Morphy Auctions’ August acquisition of VCA. The high-profile event garnered $2,381,700 (all prices quoted inclusive of 20 percent buyer’s premium), with many of the top-finishing lots coming from the Harrah collection. “There can be no question that the Harrah machines brought the people in. Once here, they ended up buying other things, as well. The collection was a very good drawcard, said VCA

president Peter Sidlow. While the event attracted more than 350 people to the gallery, phone and Internet bidders proved to be formidable contenders. “Many things went to overseas bidders, Sidlow said. “We’re still in the process of shipping items to places like Belgium, Germany and England. Leading the 1,700-lot

offering was Harrah’s Caille 25-cent roulette floor machine, a handsome circa-1904 woodcased production with ornate repousse nickel-plated

Lots Of Antiques, Collectibles, Glassware, Pottery, Clean Used Furniture, Jewelry, Etc. Herb Atkins, Auctioneer Buyer’s Premium. Major Credit Cards Accepted

The high quality items, including brass locomotives, created a

tremendous amount of preauction buzz in the model train community. Lots of special note also included a precision scale WM M-2 brass locomotive and tender, which sold for $1,495, and a MTS Imports Ajin Reading Crusader #117 which sold for $1,092. The finale of the first auction was Dr. Halbert’s personal custom built HO train layout. The massive layout included multiple tracks, buildings, mountains, and tunnels and measured 43-by-45-feet. It sold to an online bidder for $633. Other quality brass such as a precision scale B&O EM-1 locomotive and tender sold for $1,265, and a Precision/Samhongsa DM&I brass locomotive and tender went for $1,955. Zorn at the Artists’ League of Stockholm. By 1894, Sandzen emigrated to Lindsborg, Kansas, where he retained the position of principal art teacher at Bethany College until 1945. Sandzen is best known for his stylized depictions of the West, primarily working in a modernist style. Sandzen implemented bold colors and heavy impasto, similar to Vincent Van Gogh, Paul Cezanne and Henri Matisse. The painting is expected to bring $30,000-$50,000. Another notable painting is by Adolph Gottlieb (American, 1903-74). The somewhat abstract painting is a watercolor, pastel and graphite on paper in hues of brown, pink, red, rust, and white, circa 1943. The piece was originally purchased from the artist and thence by descent, it landed with the current owner. The painting is estimated at $30,000$50,000. Gottlieb began a storied career under the leadership of John Sloan and Robert Henri at the Art Student League of New York. Departing for Paris in 1921 to study at the Academie de la Grand Chaumiere before returning to New York in 1923, Gottlieb’s career is described as having four phases: Pictographs (1940s), Grids and Imaginary Landscapes (1951-57), Busts (1957-74), and Imaginary Landscapes (1960s). Gottlieb is perhaps best known for working in an Abstract Expressionist style similar to Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, and Barnet Newman. The Adolph & Esther Gottlieb Foundation catalogs this work of art as number 4354.1 and recently supplied a letter of authentication. Those with an eye for equestrian and sporting fine art will be pleased to see a polo scene by Frank Tenney Johnson on the block. The gouache on paper painting is signed and dated “1906” in the lower right and illustrates three polo players seen in pursuit of the ball. The estimate will be $15,000-$20,000. Best known for his moonlight and western scenes, Frank Tenney Johnson was born on June 28, 1874, in Big Grove, Iowa. In 1895 Johnson enrolled at the Art Students League of New York, returning to Milwaukee, Wis., only five months later to work as a illustrator. Johnson would later return to New York to complete his studies under the guidance of John Twachtman, Robert Henri and William Merrit Chase. It is said that Johnson’s work represents the best of the Old West, focusing on the landscapes of lives of the great American cowboy. Preview hours for both auctions will be available Monday through Friday, Nov. 3 to 7, or by special appointment. Previews are free and open to the public and will be held in Garth’s main gallery located at 2690 Stratford Road in Delaware, Ohio.
