An Important Steuben Vase Shines In Garth’s July Sale n July 24 and 25, Garth’s hosted a two-day auction of Asian art, fine and vintage jewelry, iconic 20thcentury design, and European furniture and decorative arts. Over 1,000 lots crossed the block inside Garth’s historic barn located in Delaware, Ohio. Amelia Jeffers, president of Garth’s Auctions, commented on the flurry of Internet activity, “There was tremendous Internet activity on the entire auction. Conservative estimates (using analytics that track our website and catalogs on just two of the five websites on which we post our auctions) put online lot views in the neighborhood of 400,000. Online bidders represented over $430,000 in bidding power. We work hard on the social media and digital catalog side of the business. We have tried to develop the same kind of cultish following there as Garth’s has always enjoyed from our “person-to-person” clients. It is paying off. The average visitor to our website views 18 pages and stays on the site for almost 10 minutes, exceedingly long when marketers talk about 60 second attention spans.” The shining star of the sale was an engraved Steuben vase by Fernand Legar, which sold after competitive bidding to a phone bidder for $78,000. The vase came to Garth’s from a private collector in Upper Arlington, Ohio, and was originally purchased in 1940 directly from Steuben on Fifth Avenue. Other notable lots from the Asian art session included a jade belt hook from the first half of the 19th century, which sold for $5,400. The piece was made of white and green jade with a delicately carved dragon and hydra and mounted on inlaid satinwood. An archer’s ring, also in white jade, tripled it’s high estimate and sold for $2,520. A pale green and white two-piece jade buckle also sparked bidder’s interest and sold for $1,320. Also included is an important portrait of John Appleton, merchant of Salem, circa 1800, from a Massachusetts estate. He is depicted seated before a table with a ledger and packet of letters. The work is an oil-oncanvas and is signed, dated and inscribed on the reverse by the American Colonial-era painter Michele Felice Corne (1752-1845). As a result, most collectors are only looking for brand new factory sealed action figures and play sets. Many collectors are attempting to establish a set of the first original ten action figures that appeared on store shelves back in 1988. These include the following 10 characters and are simply known solely as 10-backs due to the amount of characters prominently displayed on the back of each action figure’s packaging: Donatello, Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, Splinter, Shredder, Foot Soldier, April O’Neil, Bebop, and Rocksteady.

It would seem that there is just no stopping the enduring popularity of everyone’s favorite “heroes in a half shell.� Even as I write this article a new live action movie starring Megan Fox is set to be released into theaters. The nation-wide release date was August 8. With the popularity of toy collecting in full force, it should come as no surprise that the original Playmates line of toys is quickly becoming one of the most coveted toy series on the collector’s market today. It should be

In May of 1984 an independent comic book publisher by the name of Mirage Studios released a highly original comic book series with little fanfare. The first issue of the series was done completely in black and white and released in extremely limited quantities. As word of the new concept spread among comic book enthusiasts, demand increased and the series continued. Over the course of several months, the series had established a hardcore following of fans and by 1987 a licensing agreement was reached with Playmates Toys to release action figures and play sets along with a weekly animated television show based on the series. As a result of these efforts, “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles� would go on to become one of the most successful licensing properties in comic book history. By 1990 the first live action major motion picture was released

and two sequels quickly followed. Both the original Playmates toy line and the weekly cartoon series would last until 1996. What started as a simple independent comic book series had become a pop culture phenomenon. Unfortunately, by 1997 the original toy line was quietly discontinued along with the original animated television series. Luckily, this absence would be short lived. A live action television series debuted in 1997 but only lasted about one year. It was at this time that “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles� disappeared from television once again, only to reborn and brought back to life in 2003 with a much darker approach that more closely resembled the original comic book. This brave new entry to the series would last until 2009. It was at this time that the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles� seemed to be destined to exist solely in comic book form. Those who were lucky enough to buy a copy of the first printing of the first issue of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” published by Mirage Studios may be sitting on a small fortune. Released in extremely limited quantities, a certified copy in near mint condition can easily sell for $4,000 or more! It should be noted that this price is for the first printing only, as subsequent printings are worth a lot less and do exist en masse. Collectors should be very cautious when buying ungraded copies of this book as forgeries exist as well. In conclusion, the “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” franchise is a true American success story.

Created by two rather unknown comic book artists at the time (Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird), the franchise shows just how a having a unique concept and a lot of luck can translate into mass market appeal. Today both the comic book series and the original toy line are being sought by collectors and enthusiasts alike, and since the franchise has been reintroduced to a whole new generation of fans, one can only assume that its appeal will continue long after my generation has passed on. Much like the infamous tag line that appeared during the commercial break during the original animated series, I am truly confident that “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles will be back after these messages.” You can count on it!

Aside from these first 10 characters several rarities exist that were released towards the end of the original series. One of the most elusive characters to obtain is Scratch the Cat that can be seen selling on eBay for close to $800 to $1,000 when graded and encapsulated in near mint or better condition by AFA (Action Figure Authority). This hard-to-find figure was short packed, meaning that its production run was not as high as most other figures in the series.

An upcoming exhibition, titled “The Diligent Needle: Instrument of Profit, Pleasure, and Ornament,” will showcase the evolution of needlework and the prominent role it played in women’s lives during the 17th through 19th centuries.

It opens with the diligence and skill required to learn and excel at needlework and delves into the various applications of the skill, with sections on diligence, profit, pleasure, and ornament. The exhibition features stunning visual examples. The show will run from Saturday, Aug. 23, to Sunday, July 5, 2015, in the East Gallery at Winterthur. Rare Document Tied To America’s Fight For Independence On View At New-York Historical Society For The First Time The Livingston Manuscript Looks For Reconciliation With Britain On The Eve Of Independence will be on view at New-York Historical in the Patricia D. Klingenstein Library through Friday, Nov. 7, and will remain on loan to New-York Historical for purposes of study and display for two years. Hendelson, who often loans objects from his large Revolutionary War collection to museums, states, “Half the fun is acquiring these important pieces of history, the other half is sharing them with the public. Early Snow White Production Cel From Disney’s First Feature-Length Animated Film Up For Auction A very early original preliminary production cel featuring Snow White from “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” is featured in an auction this month devoted entirely to animation art. The sale is being held by Massachusetts-based RR Auction. The Snow White cel was created circa 1935 and shows the character wearing a long pink dress with a blue bow in her hair. This rarity is on a full animation cel, complete with peg holes and a cel

number at the bottom right, not to be mistaken for a color model. The image measures 2.25-by-5-inches, with overall dimensions of 12.25-by9.75-inches. “Snow White and the Seven Dwards” was the first full-length cel animated feature film and the earliest in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series. By the summer of 1936, friction had heightened between animators over the portrayal of Snow White as

more of a sophisticated young temptress, one that did not match the charming innocence that Disney required. “Walt Disney changed this design of the princess because he felt it was too ‘cartoony’ too risqué and reminiscent of Betty Boop - to be used for final production in a more serious film,” said Bobby Livingston, executive VP at RR Auction. “This considerable redesigning would result in the most perfect embodiment of the fairy-tale feminine ideal of purity and innocence that
