This sale’s offering of over 90 arcade games will put bidders in a most playful mood. Lot #232, a 1-cent Mills Novelty Submarine lung tester, is breathtaking in its rarity and presentation. Created in 1910, most of these machines were eventually destroyed due to outbreaks in tuberculosis. It is estimated at $4,000-$6,000. And it’s par for the course with lot #236, an English cast-iron Golf Floor Model arcade machine, estimated at $10,000-$20,000. This expertly restored machine rests on a matching base.

Its top marquee is decorated with two golfers and an instruction plate. Its cabinet interior features six automatons, each holding a golf club.

The first American flag to arrive at Utah Beach during D-Day in 1944, auctioned by Heritage Auctions in June 2016, arrived at the National Military Museum in the Dutch city of Soesterberg, where it received a military ceremony to launch a special exhibition on the flag.

The flag was purchased for

$514,000 by Bert Kreuk, a Dutch art collector who lives in Switzerland and New York. A longtime collector of Contemporary and Impressionist art, Kreuk purchased the flag for personal reasons. “This is one of the most important historical American flags ever to come to auction - a symbol of our freedom. And with our freedom I mean that of Europe in particular,” said Kreuk.

During the ceremony on Sept.

15, the flag was in the presence of Defense Minister Jeanine HennisPlasschaert and about 20 American World War II veterans. The American, 48-star flag was flown on the stern of the U.S. Navy ship LCC 60. This was the leading vessel on June 6, 1944, responsible for directing the invasion fleet and the first American troops to Utah Beach.

The Normandy landings were the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe.

For the Kreuk family, the flag is a symbol of the sacrifices made by the Allied soldiers for the freedom of Europe. Kreuk believes this freedom can never be taken for granted, not then, and not now. The flag is on long-term loan to the National Military Museum.

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT

By Peter Seibert The other week, a colleague shared with me an auction catalog. I looked at the provenance of many of the pieces.

They were from the George Scott collection and the Richard Flanders Smith collection. Both were great collections assembled over long spans of time. I attended both auctions and was impressed by

both the quality and the high prices paid. Their sales represented probably the highest levels the Pennsylvania German market has ever reached with prices. Even common items brought incredible sums of money. I remember dreaming about what I would do if I had a spare $100,000 and how far it would go in purchasing treasures. Alas, I never got anything but a great memory.

The items that were being sold today probably were reappearing for the first time since those original sales back in the 1990s. So, after several decades, how did they do? Well, the prices were mixed and

represented the reshaping of the market in 2016. Some did well, and others crashed and burned. That is the nature of all collections, but having seen the pieces sell for so much in the past, it was interesting to see where the market is today.

We have all been raised to believe that antiques always go up in value, so the last decade has been a huge lesson for all of us. We have seen prices go down, with recovery only occuring in certain areas.

Fraktur may be strong, but brown furniture remains a great area of opportunity.

I think all of us enjoy the memories of the past. The

trade flourishes upon those memories, and they are given the fancy phrase of provenance - or collector history - to describe that history of ownership for objects. Provenance can add value to pieces, as it tells who owned them and thus can ascribe great value and importance to an object. I have seen provenance statements that read like a book in the Bible. Such statements also help collectors to understand when a piece first appeared on the market. That is particularly true with areas such as painted furniture, where augmented pieces are common. An object with a great provenance becomes a statement of authenticity in many respects.

The other interesting thing

about our memory of objects is that it reminds us all that we are temporary custodians of these treasures. We own these objects for just a short period.

Sometimes we sell them,

sometimes our heirs sell them, but inevitably we are temporary custodians of these pieces, our ownership being logged as the provenance of a piece.

Philadelphia Chapter One Of NAWCC Inc. To Hold Show In York, Pa.

The Reading Public Museum in Reading, Pa., is pleased to announce a focus exhibition in the museum’s auditorium dedicated to Berks County artist Ben Austrian (1870-1921). Titled “Ben Austrian: An American Original,” the show will be on view through Sunday, Dec. 18.

The small exhibition is mounted in honor of Judith M. Hartman, a longtime museum volunteer and supporter.

In 1982, Hartman published a seminal article on the artist that appeared in the Historical Review of Berks County (47:2). Austrian paintings are hung flanking fellow Berks County artist Christopher Shearer’s masterpiece, “Smoky Range, Allegheny Mountains” (1895).

The show features ten paintings, including a group of Austrian’s most important works, such as “Golden Harvest” (1900), “Motherhood” (1897), and “Still Life” (1898).

Austrian is best known for his sensitive renderings of barnyard animals - especially mother hens tending to sometimes unruly chicks.

Landscapes and trompe l’œil (“fool the eye”) still-lifes were also a part of Austrian’s body of work. He also painted game scenes as well as landscape views of Europe, Florida, and Pennsylvania.

Eventually, his chick paintings caught the attention of the makers of Bon Ami natural household cleanser.

Austrian’s “just-hatched” chick appeared on packaging around 1902 and quickly became associated with the brand along with their tag line - “Hasn’t Scratched Yet.” The product continues to use Austrian’s chick on its packaging today.

PNC Arts Alive Provides Funding For Programs The Brandywine River Museum of Art has received a grant from the PNC Foundation through its PNC Arts Alive initiative to fund free family programs on selected Sunday mornings. This prestigious grant was awarded to only 17 arts organizations in the Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey region for bold thinking around increasing arts access and engagement.

The “First Sundays for Families” programs feature special hands-on creative art activities designed to engage visitors of all ages. On these special days, museum admission is free all day. PNC Arts Alive has funded this program since 2014, and over 3,500 people have attended these events.

The Brandywine received a similar grant last year for programming in 2016, and the next PNC Arts Alive First Sunday for Families will take place on Sunday, Oct. 2.

“Our First Sundays for Families bring in hundreds of community residents, who engage with the art in our galleries and create their own art to take home,” said Mary Cronin, dean of education at the Brandywine River Museum of Art. “We are honored that Brandywine River Museum of Art will once again receive funding through the PNC Arts Alive initiative to continue to help make art accessible for our neighbors.”

Chapter One is proud of its long and esteemed history.

Founded in 1943, it is the oldest chapter affiliated with the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, the largest clock and watch society in the United States.

The group is among the most educationally innovative chapter in the NAWCC, by offering various programs and activities. It holds six meetings a year. Each one has numerous “mart” tables where

meeting, a feature demonstration workshop is conducted that introduces new developments and innovations in the arts and sciences of horology.

Membership also expands horological horizons with the “best in show contest.” This event encourages members to bring in interesting and unusual examples of clocks, watches, tools or any item that furthered the horological arts. These items are exhibited and their significance to the field explained. The membership then votes on the one item in each category that they feel is “best in the show.”

A watch and a clock “open bench program” is done, where members with repair problems or other issues can get the advice and help needed from experienced watch and clock repair persons.

Chapter One also sponsors two $500 scholarships each year for students persuing studies in all aspects of horology. These scholarships are awarded to persons of all ages enrolled in any accredited course or school of horology.

On Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 5 and 6, Chapter One of the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors (NAWCC) will sponsor a large scale Watch and Clock Show at the York Expo Center in York, Pa. Not only will shoppers find the largest collection of antique and modern clocks and watches on the East Coast on sale, but there will also be three informative lectures on “American Empire Clocks” by Russ Ochel, Lee Davis, and Al Dodson - three American clock collectors and restorers. Also featured at this regional meeting will be an ongoing series of silent auctions where attendees can purchase clocks, watches, parts, tools, and books at bargain basement prices.

There are numerous preWorld War I first-version soldiers, also known to collectors as “ancients.” A top pick in this category is a circa-1893 Set No. 9, the 16th Lancers in “Ulundi” Foreign This Britains Set #72 Lifeguards Past and Service Dress, est. $6,000Present in rare Queen’s Diamond Jubilee $8,000. The Lancers are box is estimated at $10,000-$14,000. unusual in that they are “plug-handed,” meaning the arms are fashioned as plugs that fit through the figure.

To mark the final, and what will surely be the most intensive phase of this year’s election, the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College will mount the new exhibit, “See How They Ran! FDR and His Opponents: Campaign Treasures from the New-York Historical Society.”

The show will present vivid examples of the onetime “new media” tools that were powerful enough in its time to mesmerize and motivate millions of American voters during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s four historic campaigns for President from 1932 to 1944.

These deceptively quaint buttons, posters, broadsides, and radio broadcasts once seemed just as cutting-edge as the Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and television platforms that are dominating the modern political era campaign of 2016 - and in their time, proved equally powerful as tools to convey the campaign messages of FDR and his four rivals for the nation’s highest office.

The rarely seen political items, including original artwork (such as an FDR campaign poster by Ben Shahn), along with metal and celluloid pins, paper prints, signs, consumer goods, sound recordings, and popular music, all boasted captivating messages, slogans, and images that reverberated through four of the most important White House campaigns in our history, and arguably moved millions of voters to the Roosevelt camp.

“See How They Ran” is drawn primarily from the collections of the New-York Historical Society, with additional material provided by The Franklin D. All these artifacts, accentuated by Roosevelt’s own ringing voice and accompanied by the rousing campaign music of his times will demonstrate for modern visitors the remarkable marketing efforts undertaken on behalf of FDR and his opponents in the presidential campaigns of 1932, 1936, 1940, and 1944.

The show will be introduced by far more primitive campaign items from the 19th century (including Abraham Lincoln’s 1860 race). The show will also include a nod to FDR’s first national campaign, his unsuccessful race for vice president on the Democratic ticket with presidential nominee James Cox in 1920. The show will feature a special epilogue in honor of Eleanor Roosevelt’s monumental behind-thescenes role in all of her husband’s campaigns (including her speech to the 1940 National Convention credited with assuring FDR the nomination for an unprecedented third term) and in acknowledgment of the first major-party presidential nomination of a woman. This special epilogue will feature material on the very first women to seek the presidency before women even had the right to vote: Victoria Woodhull, who sought the office in 1872, declaring in one of the great understatements in campaign history, “I anticipate criticism,” and Belva Lockwood, who ran a national campaign in 1884, telling the

The majority of exhibition space will be devoted to mass-produced campaign material designed to the campaigns of Franklin Roosevelt.

Almost quaint by 21st-century standards, these advertising tools, in their own time, characterized the most brilliantly conceived, ultra-modern campaigns for the nation’s highest office. Distributed in vast numbers by political organizations, these artifacts were passionately used by voters of the era, eagerly displayed on lawns, fences, and in storefronts; proudly worn on lapels, hats, and dresses; or eagerly hoisted at rallies and parades. They were designed not only to boost FDR, but to defeat him, to be shown by campaign buttons featuring slogans like “No Third Term” and “We Don’t Like Eleanor Either.”
