Lot #58, an exquisite 5-cent Mills Duplex floor wheel slot machine, will turn a few heads with its $100,000-$150,000 estimate. Manufactured in 1899, it is detailed with a handsome oak cabinet and brass patinaed cast metal elements. Up to 10 nickels can be played per pull. What collector wouldn’t want to add lot #169, a circa 1901 5-cent Caille Black Cat upright slot machine, to their meow mix? Estimated at $45,000$65,000, this circa 1912, all original machine displays the names of countries, instead of the names of cities as in the “City Reel” model. This sale’s offering of over 90 arcade games will put bidders in a most playful mood. Lot #232, a 1-cent Mills Novelty Submarine lung tester, is breathtaking in its rarity and presentation. Created in 1910, most of these machines were eventually destroyed due to outbreaks in tuberculosis. It is estimated at $4,000-$6,000. And it’s par for the course with lot #236, an English cast-iron Golf Floor Model arcade machine, estimated at $10,000-$20,000. This expertly restored machine rests on a matching base. Its top marquee is decorated with two golfers and an instruction plate. Its cabinet interior features six automatons, each holding a golf club. The first American flag to arrive at Utah Beach during D-Day in 1944, auctioned by Heritage Auctions in June 2016, arrived at the National Military Museum in the Dutch city of Soesterberg, where it received a military ceremony to launch a special exhibition on the flag. The flag was purchased for
$514,000 by Bert Kreuk, a Dutch art collector who lives in Switzerland and New York. A longtime collector of Contemporary and Impressionist art, Kreuk purchased the flag for personal reasons. “This is one of the most important historical American flags ever to come to auction - a symbol of our freedom. And with our freedom I mean that of Europe in particular,” said Kreuk.
During the ceremony on Sept. 15, the flag was in the presence of Defense Minister Jeanine HennisPlasschaert and about 20 American World War II veterans. The American, 48-star flag was flown on the stern of the U.S. Navy ship LCC 60. This was the leading vessel on June 6, 1944, responsible for directing the invasion fleet and the first American troops to Utah Beach. The Normandy landings were the beginning of the liberation of Western Europe. For the Kreuk family, the flag is a symbol of the sacrifices made by the Allied soldiers for the freedom of Europe. Kreuk believes this freedom can never be taken for granted, not then, and not now. The flag is on long-term loan to the National Military Museum. “Last year I visited Normandy in person with an uncle of mine. This
