Forest City’s Main Street suffered a serious blow as a fire on Aug. 27 left a major section of the 500 block in ruins. The fire started in the Studio 511 building, which was being remodeled for a new tenant. Flames were 100 feet in the air when local fire units arrived. There was some hope that the fire could be contained, but it spread through the attached wall with the former Tobacco store and then to the upstairs of the Funeral Home. Efforts to restrict the spread into the Ros-Al store failed. Though the Ros-Al building was the last to be engulfed, it was the first to collapse. Forest City is a small borough in Susquehanna County, Pa., at the corner of Susquehanna,

Collectors were out in full force vying for the plethora of prizes Garth’s had brought together for this early September sale. From a letter believed to be written in George Washington’s own hand to an uncommon Soap Hollow chest and a surge in interest for Illinois’ Galena pottery, this auction was awesome. The top lot of the sale

Garth’s catalog stated, “This piece was passed down through the consignor’s family for four generations.The original owner was Elizabeth (Lizzie) Ann Yoder, an Amish woman from Johnstown, Pennsylvania, born October 2, 1861, died September 21, 1930. She married Benjamin Shrock at age 19, March 18, 1880. Lizzie moved to Geauga County, Ohio, in the 1890s, where her husband started a slate roofing business. The chest then passed to the consignor’s mother, also named Lizzie Ann, who was born in 1918. She was the daughter of Lizzie and Benjamin’s second son, Moses. It was later given to the consignor.”

pen-and-ink on laid paper letter (lot 395) addressed to “Dear George” and dated “Philadelphia 30th May (17) ’87.” The letter included a discussion of a diary and mentioned Charles Thompson, Secretary of Congress, as well as a post script noting the rainy weather and, most importantly, signed “George Washington.” “The letter had not been authenticated, but the ink and paper had the appropriate age,” stated Jeffers. The catalog listing also noted, “The paper has the watermark of Britannia from a paper manufacturer in Kent County, England, and corresponds to Washington’s personal stationery.” Estimated at $600 to $1,200, the consensus of those bidding indicates the letter was correct, as it sold for $18,000. “It’s a wonderful letter,” said Jeffers. According to Garth’s catalog, “The Wide Awakes was a youth organization associated with the Republicans.” Reflecting on the day’s events, Jeffers stated, “The prices realized at this auction bode well for the rest of the year and into the New Year; a positive swing. People are thinking again about the value available at auction, which is good. We are all tied together – dealer, collector, auctioneer, consignor, buyer. When one is not doing well, it affects us all, but luckily the opposite also holds true. The Pennsylvania pine and poplar piece had two bowfront drawers over three graduated drawers, all being dovertailed, as well as the expected turned feet and scrolled crest. It had its original paint stenciling with “LAY 1870” and “Manufactor by John K. Livingston.” Standing 39.5 inches high, this little gem sold for $12,600 (est. $3,000-$5,000). Where decorative smalls are concerned, this category was led by an American watercolor on paper fraktur (lot 247) recording the Jan. 3, 1862, birth of S e r e n a Luginbuhl. Decorated with a stenciled design of flowers and birds with a central heart motif, this fraktur was estimated at $200 to $400. Buyers felt otherwise, with the winning bidder paying $7,560 to take this lovely home. “It was felt by those who inquired about the fraktur that it had a Sonnenburg, Ohio, origin,” said Jeffers. giving a dealer a set number of hours to work in exchange for rent reduction. It also has to be about customer service training. Running a co-op is the same as running any retail business, especially in the post-2009 world. It has to be about exceptional customer service. For a co-op, where dozens of dealers are set up, it has to be about representing them. Some years ago when we came back from a visit out West, we stopped in one of the big co-ops in Adamstown. The dealer working greeted us, and we chatted. He asked me if I was looking for a good deal, and I said yes. He showed me a very nice and inexpensive pot in a booth. It was not HIS booth. In fact, he said he would probably buy it to take to another mall if I did not. He may have been selling me soap, but the reality is the piece was great, priced cheap, and I still have it. That was great customer service and the winner was not only me,

I love antique co-ops. I have loved them since I went into my first one near Hershey more than 35 years ago, and I still go into them now. For most of us, co-ops wax and wane in terms of the quality of goods they offer. The parttime dealers who started with selling Aunt Tillie’s stuff have faded away in the post-2009 world. There are still many dealers who use the malls to sell off lesser or oddball items that they have acquired. And there are many folks who still

Having worked retail, the answer is that the paid senior staffer should have said, “We close at 5, but please continue to shop, as I have some work to do.” That answer would have let me know my rules for leaving but also opened the door for me to continue shopping until we hit the magic mark. Staffing at co-ops is the responsibility of management, and it is not always just a matter of hiring someone or

I arrived there around 4:25 p.m. and immediately spotted some items (note the plural) that I grabbed and took up front. Saying to the clerk that I wanted to leave them and that I was going to “start a pile,” she came back to me with the oddest of responses. “Well…okay…we are closing really soon.” About five minutes later (now probably around 4:35), we ran into one of the strolling clerks. First words were, “We are closing soon.” I handed her another item we were buying, and she scampered off. We rounded another corner and ran into the third clerk of the day, and guess what, ”You know we are closing soon.” We get to the basement of the mall, and we were told that they had closed it. The time was now

While the original coronation dress was embroidered, Angels Costumes, which was commissioned by the worldfamous Harrods to make the gown, employed modern screen-printing and beading techniques to create the replica. Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library introduces its â&#x20AC;&#x153;Eye on the Iconicâ&#x20AC;? exhibition series, which will explore a single iconic object, with the inaugural exhibition, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Royal Splendor: The Coronation Gown from â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Crown,â&#x20AC;? on Friday, Oct. 20. Featured is the replica of Queen Elizabeth IIâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s coronation dress worn by Claire Foy in the Netflix series â&#x20AC;&#x153;The Crown.â&#x20AC;? The series will examine what makes an object iconic - something that is widely recognized and of note. The dress will be on view through Jan. 7, 2018. Using the replica gown as a focus object, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Royal Splendorâ&#x20AC;? examines various meanings of an icon. First, the iconic nature of the original dress and the role it played in history is considered. As viewers of the Netflix series know, the episode featuring the coronation dress depicts not only a dramatized version of the queen and the preparations for the coronation but also the fascinating history of televising the ceremony. The coronation, and therefore the coronation dress, reached more than 277 million viewers around the world. The visibility of the dress in newspapers and magazines, as well as on television, contributed to its iconic status. The iconography, or symbols, incorporated into the dress itself by designer Norman Hartnell and at the suggestion of the queen, are also identified and discussed. The exhibition also considers the significance of the replica as an icon or representation of the original and why it and other objects are made to celebrate a monarch. While the historical and cultural significance of the original coronation dress is self-evident, this replica has an interesting history too. Before capturing a television audience, the replica

culture was repressed, Native Americans were not slaves. Some escaped slaves found that by masking their identities and taking on Indian dress and language, they could pass as free men. By the mid-19th century in New Orleans, La., networks of grassroots African-American organizations began commemorating the help they received from the American Indians through unannounced parades and celebrations. The groups took on names, such as the Creole Wild West, and danced through the streets in handcrafted suits influenced by traditional Indian dress. Individual sewing styles emerged as the level of craftsmanship in the suits evolved. Though founded on ancient Indian and African artistic patterns, modern suits are a unique hybrid being continuously

elaborated and updated. “Their suits are artwork, vividly colored and meticulously hand-beaded - we are proud to introduce work of this quality to our community. We especially thank Ruth Sladovich for providing the human connections, inspiration and motivation for this event,” said Doug Van Tress, owner of The Golden Triangle. This tradition continued to grow into the 20th century, largely unknown by the world outside of New Orleans. Up until 2005, the groups were often opposed by police, who saw their unpredictable parade routes as a threat to public order. Then a renaissance began with a movement led by Big Chief Allison “Tootie” Montana of the Yellow Pocahontas as he steered the events away from their violent past to center around the artistry of the suits and performances. “With interesting stories behind every beaded artwork adorning spectacular feathered ‘suits,’ The Mardi Gras Indians are a critical part of New Orleans culture. I am honored and humbled to play a role with The Golden Triangle to introduce one of the oldest African-American original art forms to a national audience,” said Ruth Sladovich, curator.

The Golden Triangle in Chicago, Ill., will present “Revealing Mardi Gras Indians: Beaded Art of a Hidden Culture,” an exhibition of colorful beaded and feathered suits, from Thursday, Oct. 19, to Sunday, Dec. 31. It is the largest such exhibition of Mardi Gras Indian artwork ever held. The event will feature 14 exhibits ranging from full suits to beaded fragments. The story of the Mardi Gras Indians is quite mysterious. Their history has been passed down through spoken word for generations, and varying stories of their origin are now told. The most accepted origin story stems from the alliance formed between American Indians and African-Americans as both groups struggled for freedom during colonization. African slaves sometimes escaped to join Indian tribes surviving in remote swamps and bayous. Though Indian

“Opening The Door: Safes Of The Shenandoah Valley” Shines New Light On An Important American Regional Furniture Form are introduced to house builder and carpenter Philip F. Baker, who continued to make safes in the Brocks Gap area of western Rockingham County into the 1930s. The chapter explains how modernization and socioeconomic factors played a key role in the end of the safe-making tradition. The documentation of the Baker shop, which the authors viewed exactly as Baker last left it in the 1930s, is one of numerous exciting discoveries presented in the book.

Collaborating in Lexington, Rockbridge County, Va., this team produced a group of safes depicting political figures and other patriotic images, with this safe’s tins depicting images of President George Washington. Alongside this safe is displayed a typical storage safe of about 1865, made for the Albrite family in the Fulks Run area of

Rockingham County, Va., by a craftsman whose identify is unknown. Book Signing and Safe-Identification Clinic To celebrate the publication of “Opening the Door: Safes of the Valley,” the MSV will host a free safe-identification clinic and book signing from 2 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 4. Attendees are invited to bring images of safes they own for identification by the

authors. Safe images should include views of the safe overall, one end, a detail of the tin design, and the back, if possible. If the safe has a drawer, attendees should provide a photo of the drawer’s side showing construction or, better yet, bring the drawer itself to accompany the photos. There will be a limit of one identification per person. MSV admission is not required to meet the authors or participate in the

At 136 pages, “Opening the Door: Safes of the Valley” is the fourth book the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley has published. Richly illustrated with images of safes and their distinctive tin patterns, it is available for purchase in the MSV Store for $44.95. Related Gallery Exhibit In conjunction with the publication of “Opening the Door,” the MSV is exhibiting three significant safes in its collection. These include a server safe dating to 1875 and made by William F. Petefish (1846–about 1920). Working in the town of Honeyville of Page County, Va., Petefish made the safe of poplar, yellow pine, and tinned sheet metal and signed it multiple times. It serves as the benchmark for an important school of safes produced in Page County from the 1830s to the 1880s. The MSV acquired this safe in 2016, and it is on display for the first time in the museum to celebrate the book’s publication. The Museum of the Shenandoah Valley has announced publication of its long-awaited book, “Opening the Door: Safes of the Shenandoah Valley.” Co-authored by Valley scholars Kurt C. Russ and Jeffrey S. Evans, the publication is based on the research of The Virginia Safe Project, which the authors launched in 2010. The groundbreaking volume documents and greatly expands on the content presented in the exhibition “Safes of the Valley,” which took place at the MSV in 2014-15. According to MSV executive director Dana Hand Evans, “Opening the Door” has been eagerly awaited by scholars, private collectors, and those with an interest in both Shenandoah Valley and American regional decorative arts and material culture. “Thanks to Kurt Russ’s and Jeff Evans’s passion and knowledge about safes, the story of an important furniture form is now documented and preserved for future generations,” said Evans. Often called a “pie safe,” the safe is defined by its tin panels that are punched with decorative patterns to allow ventilation. Common in 19thcentury homes throughout the mid-Atlantic region and beyond, safes stored a variety of items, from food to table wares to textiles. This book tells how and why this ubiquitous furniture form became highly developed in the Shenandoah Valley region and evolved from a simple storage cabinet into a symbol of cultural and social identification. In the book, authors Russ and Evans provide an introduction to and history of the basic safe form, from the 17th century to the first quarter of the 20th century. They also reveal how safes provide insights about the people who produced and used them. In addition, the authors identify types and regional variations of safe forms and tin patterns, document significant new cabinet shops and regional schools of production, and explore the interactions of artisans. Russ and Evans also consider the changing functions and perceptions of the safe in the home, and they trace the safe’s transition from the kitchen and pantry into the dining room, parlor, and beyond. An oil-on-canvas by British artist Abraham Cooper of the race horse “Elis,” dated 1838, will be estimated at $5,000-$10,000. “Elis” was best known for winning the St. Leger Stakes in 1836.

Attributed to Joseph Leyendecker (American 1874-1951), an oil-on-plywood illustration for Hires root beer is estimated at $4,000-$8,000. arms. An important set of three Pennsylvania wrought-iron utensils, including a ladle, a straining ladle, and a flesh fork, will surely catch a collector’s eye with their matching brass inlaid bands. Two Wilhelm Schimmel carved and painted pine eaglets are up for auction, one angry bird, one not so much. Possibly one of the most incredible lots in the auction is that of two frakturs dated 1842. The one announces the wedding of Eli Sigman and Rhoda Bost, and the other the birth of their son, Marcus Lafayette Sigman. Marcus served in the Confederate Army as part of Company A, 12th Infantry. He was killed at the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia on May 5, 1864, at the age of 23. Another highlight is an impressive Nativity scene made by Carl Gerum of Allentown, Pa. Gerum purportedly carved each figure over the course of roughly 15 years, sending each one to his sister in Germany for clothing and accessories. Other American decorative arts and furniture set to cross the auction block include examples of toleware, primitive paintings, wallpaper boxes, children’s furniture, butter stamps, Federal furniture, needlework samplers, redware, stoneware, Gaudy Dutch, brass, and scrimshaw. Proceeds from several lots in this sale will be donated to Horses Help Heroes, a nonprofit equine therapy program for veterans located in Maryland. These lots are indicated in the catalog. Halfway through the sale, Pook & Pook Inc. keeps the trend of Americana going with a collection of items from New England.
