ORIGINAL SEMIANNUAL YORK SHOW BRINGS IN TREMENDOUS GATE By Karl Pass

he 161st edition of the Original Semiannual York Antiques Show and Sale took place in Memorial Hall East on the York Fairgrounds in York, Pa., August 30 to Sept. 1. One of the longestrunning shows in the country, it began in 1934. There were 96 dealers. The attendance on Friday, prior to the 10 a.m. opening, wrapped inside the hall further than usual. “I don’t remember the line ever being this long before,” said one show goer. “We were ahead of last year for the opening day gate and about equal on the other two days,” said show manager Melvin Arion. Statistically, the winter edition of the show boasts stronger gate numbers. The semiannual York show is held every Labor Day weekend and also the last weekend in January, following Americana Week in New York City. The dealers polled stated that business was steady, with sales being good over the course of all three days. Some exhibitors

reported having had a better show on Labor Day than they did last January. For some, it was the opposite. Mark Saylor of Bertolet House Antiques sold six pieces of furniture at the show, which amounted to a much higher gross than what he sold at the January show. There are no certainties in the antiques business. The dealers who bring fresh merchandise priced accordingly to today’s market are typically well-received with current buyers. Arion certainly did his job bringing shoppers to his show. He invests heavily in

advertising and it pays off for him. The York show has a following from the Metropolitan D.C. and Baltimore regions. It also draws people from Philadelphia and New Jersey. The show has a reliable roster of dealers with little turnover, yet a few new faces were there. “We had seven illnesses (among dealers). Some came early and some at the last minute, but we filled the show and those that filled in were pleased and want to come back,” stated Arion. An extremely diverse variety of offerings were available. Quality material rang-

ing from many periods could be found. The show had an array of American and English ceramics; textiles, including quilts, samplers, hooked rugs and Oriental rugs; formal and country furniture; holiday material, including vintage Christmas ornaments; and metalware, including iron, silver, and pewter. There was also nautical material, folk art, jewelry, pottery, lighting, toys, carvings, glassware, a wide selection of prints and paintings, and much more. Local dealer Kelly Kinzle of New Oxford, Pa., sold an excellent Pennsylvania paint-decorated Dutch cupboard, a lowboy and a very rare Pennsylvania walnut linen press dated in inlay 1767, possibly from Chester County. These five wooden decorative flag pole toppers were priced at $4,800 from Scott Brasseur of Prospect, Pa.

This life-size elk head with antlers from an Elk’s Lodge in Rochester, N.Y., was $12,500 from Robesonia, Pa., dealer Greg Kramer.

Michael and Diana Ogle of American Garage of Los Angeles, Calif., were new exhibitors to the show. This rare three-dimensional cast iron fish trade sign found in a fish shop in Iowa was $11,500. On the wall behind was a large 9-by-12 foot hooked rug in the “hit or miss” pattern, priced at $4,800.

Jim Kilvington of Greenville, Del., had these two circa 1820 portraits attributed to the artist known as Mr. Boyd. Working in Harrisburg, Pa., he was a contemporary of the well-known Jacob Eichholtz.

Greshville Antiques And Fine Art Hosts Annual Berks County Art Show, Oct. 6 to 13 The annual Berks County Art Show will be held at Greshville Antiques and Fine Art on Sunday, Oct. 6 ,through Sunday, Oct. 13. The only show of its kind, this event has become the “calling card” for Greshville Antiques and Fine Art. The show will feature approximately 100 museum-quality antique paintings by the school of artists from Berks County who worked from 1850-1940, including portraits, landscapes, still lifes, wildlife, and genre scenes. The last 12 months have provided a wide array of wonderful acquisitions for this year’s show. Just in the door in time for cataloging for the show was a chick painting by Matilda “Tillie” Spang (1871-1939). Tillie

Spang, the daughter of Elizabeth and artist Frederick Spang (18341891), was an accomplished portrait painter, studying in Paris under the r e n o w n e d French artist W i l l i a m Bouguereau. Many of the models constructed by middle-school classes over the years will be on exhibit at the Arts Council “Art Space” Gallery through the month of October, and also at various business locations for Owego’s Third Friday ArtWalk, on Friday, Oct. 18, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. On display at EOAC during the month will be the model of the former D L & W Railroad Passenger Station in Apalachin, N.Y. Several other events are scheduled around the Owego architectural theme. On Saturday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. at EOAC, Tioga County historian Emma Sedore will speak on the Architectural Awareness Program and the history and significance of some of the buildings that have been rendered as models. On Saturday, Oct. 12, at 2 p.m. at EOAC, Mark Trabucco, of the Owego

Historic Preservation Commission, will talk about the work of the commission and some of the successes and challenges that the commission has faced. On Friday, Oct. 18, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the ArtSpace Gallery, Don Schultz, teacheradvisor to the middle-school program, along with a number of his current students, will give an informal presentation on how the students research and construct these impressive models. On Saturday, Oct. 26, there will be a “Space Making” architecture workshop for kids, hosted by Emily Pellicano at the Tioga County Council on the Arts from 10 a.m. to noon ($15 per participant, $10 for members). A museumquality, early 20th-century Native American Kiowa cradleboard with beaded accents and original boards sailed past its pre-sale estimate of $20,000$40,000 to sell for $103,500 at a twoday â&#x20AC;&#x153;Best of Santa Fe 2013â&#x20AC;? sale held Aug. 9 and 10 by Allard Auctions, Inc., of St. Ignatius, Mont. The auction was held at the Scottish Rites Hall in Santa Fe, N.M. The cradleboard, measuring 46-by-12-by-10 inches, was in fine condition. It had been consigned by a man in his late 90s who still remembered playing with the item as a toy in the 1920s, when he was a boy. It was later given to him by his grandmother. He had displayed the cradleboard in his home for most of the past 70plus years before deciding to part with it. In all, nearly 850 lots came up for bid in an auction that grossed roughly $517,000. The 33 clocks on exhibit were crafted by over 30 different clockmakers from eight states. Work by acclaimed clockmakers such as Simon and Benjamin Willard, Daniel Burnap and Thomas Claggett will be included. Many of the

cases were made by important Early American cabinetmakers such as Major Stephen Badlam, Matthew Egerton Jr. and members of the GoddardTownsend School. Creating a musical clock movement was the highest point in a clockmaker’s career. Such expertise was required to produce them, and so intricate were their elements, that only a small fraction of clockmakers
