That will change on Saturday, Oct. 3, when Bertoia’s presents at auction Part I of the Clive Devenish collection of mechanical, still, tin and spelter banks. He also has banks that were formerly in the Stan Sax, Edwin Mosler, Bill Norman, and Stephen and Marilyn Steckbeck collections.” Bertoia said some of the banks were initially added to collections in the 1930s and only changed hands twice over the next 85 years, explaining their exceptionally fresh condition. through Sunday, Oct. 11. Promoting the works by Berks County artists from 1850-1950, it’s the only show of its kind. This annual show is held for only eight days and averages an attendance of 2,500-3,000 art enthusiasts. Greshville Antiques and Fine Art is located at 1041 Reading Ave. (Route 562) in Boyertown, Pa. Owners Kurt and Valerie Malmberg have specialized in the school of Berks County artists for over 30 years. Their research and documentation piloted a national interest in this regional art and led to the publication of several articles and books. Their continuing effort to purchase and document Berks County art from across the country affirms their commitment to the local heritage of Berks County, Pa. Featured in this year’s show will be approximately 100 museum quality paintings. Oil paintings, watercolors, and prints will be exhibited at this show, with all works available for purchase and guaranteed as represented. Included will be several works by Ben Austrian (1870-1921), Berks County’s most noted artist. These will include tonal landscapes and his famous renderings of chicks. Austrian gained national recognition in the early 1900s as the originator of the Bon Ami chick logo, a single chick and broken egg shell with the phrase, “Hasn’t scratched yet.” A prime example of his popular work is the rendition of chicks in a fancy slipper titled “Watch Us Grow.” Found in a house in New England, this oil-oncanvas was painted by Austrian in 1903 and retains its original frame. The back of the painting retains original paperwork of the Brown & Bigelow Publishing Company, who chose this piece to be reproduced into a color print. Brown & Bigelow, seven years in business at this time, printed other images of Austrian’s work and eventually grew into a leading publishing company of the 20th century, utilizing artwork from Norman Rockwell, Maxfield Parrish, pinup artist Alfred Buell, and others. Christopher H. Shearer (1846-1926) was the most prolific of the artists of Berks County, primarily painting landscapes. Included in the exhibition for sale is a

Another alluring painting is an early 20th-century oil-on-board signed “Lew Bloom.” Small in size, it depicts sheep on a dirt road on their journey home, accompanied by a sunset. Being unfamiliar with Bloom, research was in order, and a fascinating story emerged, again “beyond the paint.” Bloom (1859-1929) was a By C.H. SHOPS & CENTERS Collector Anecdotes And Antics A Look At PEZ Collecting Today holds is an excellent lesson in the perils of speculation that has taken hold of the overall collecting community today. Having just recently sold a little over half of my high grade vintage comic book collection to record breaking prices across the board, I can’t help but wonder what lessons can be learned by looking at other collecting fields that experienced similar speculative bubbles that we are now seeing in the vintage toy and comic book markets. At last count, I have several hundred PEZ dispensers

from the vintage to contemporary eras all in near mint to mint condition. Some of these pieces were obtained during my younger years, and others were obtained at conventions and through online dealers with whom I trust. Yet still others were bought brand new at my local Toys-R-Us or Target store for just a few dollars or less. Unfortunately, if you take a current look at several completed auctions on eBay, you can see that most of the vintage to contemporary PEZ market is oversaturated, with few

exceptions. The Universal Monster themed dispensers are always in demand, as are several of the earlier original horror and superhero-based dispensers. Contemporary dispensers barely ever sell at their full retail price, and even dispensers from the early 1980s can be found cheaply and in overabundance online or at various conventions that occur annually throughout the world. Some dispensers that once sold for close to a dollar or more back in the 1980s are now found in factory sealed

In 1993, an interesting collection of PEZ candy dispensers went on sale at Christie’s auction house. The collection consisted of both vintage and contemporary pieces, and the frenzy that followed left collectors and the media dumbfounded. The modest colorful candy dispenser with a unique head solidified itself as a pop culture icon. By 1995, a new Internet auction platform called AuctionWeb appeared on the scene and started gaining collector’s attention. When the site changed its name to eBay, it was incorrectly reported that the auction site was formed by its founder Pierre Omidyar because he wanted to obtain a hard-to-find PEZ dispenser for his girlfriend. The story was later noted as being false, but prices for most vintage PEZ dispensers continued to remain steady and even rise. Today, PEZ collecting has waned, and prices reflect that. Dispensers that used to sell for $100 or more can now be

routinely found selling for $50 to $75. Even new dispensers fail to create the speculative frenzy that was achieved 10 to 20 years ago, and while the rarest dispensers will always be rare, prices have fallen substantially. I started collecting back when I was in junior high school, and I am surprised just how little my then vintage dispensers are still worth. Truth be told, this is one article I was actually hesitant in writing. A lot of PEZ collectors and enthusiasts are extremely passionate about collecting these unique candy dispensers, and they should be. Unfortunately, the story of PEZ collecting and what the future

condition for a lot less. This doesn’t bode well for the overall market. The real money is in vintage dispensers made from the 1970s or before. Ironically, even most of this sector of the market is still a buyer’s market. It appears that overall PEZ collecting is no longer as appealing as it once was. I no longer see much media attention being devoted to the sale or collecting of PEZ dispensers, and outside of PEZ devoted conventions I see very few articles on collecting being written on the subject of PEZ. Even the release of commercial price guides has been

Fabled Kyle D. Moore Petroliana Collection To Be Auctioned

The Independent Gasoline gas pump globe with image of Spirit of ‘76 on both sides, an early example, is estimated at $10,000-$30,000.

highly regarded petroliana collection. It’s one for the history books,” said Matthews. The Moore collection is, in fact, the most valuable collection ever to pass through Morphy’s doors, according to the firm’s president and founder, Dan Morphy. “We have no doubt that this collection is worth $15 to 20 million. It’s in a class of its own,” said Morphy. Amassed over a 40-year period by Moore, a cable TV entrepreneur who died in March of 2014, the collection now belongs to an Oklahoma businessman who bought it as an investment in 2006. Rather

than moving it, the new owner chose to leave the collection in situ at Moore’s spacious residence, even paying Moore rent for storage and stewardship. The collection is so vast and of such immense value that Morphy’s has opted to disperse it in a series of four or five auctions, starting with the Oct. 5 opener. “Each and every session will contain some unbelievable gems. I haven’t seen such a level of excitement in all my years in the hobby,” said Matthews, who evaluated and described the contents for the auction catalog. The first session’s offering contains a number of items expected to finish in five-figure territory, starting with advertising signs. A Kelly Tires “Lotta Miles” porcelain sign with the image of a woman driver in fashionable 1920s attire is estimated at $50,000-$80,000, while a super-rare Red Hat

Motor Oil/Gasoline doublesided porcelain sign is expected to make $25,000-$35,000. An elusive Harbor Petroleum Products double-sided porcelain die-cut sign with an appealing image of a seaplane surging through ocean waves with a lighthouse in the background is expected to land at $35,000-$50,000. In addition to 2,000 petroleum-related advertising signs, the collection includes 150 early gas pumps. A rare

double-clockface Eco-meter pump, professionally restored and in beautiful condition, could reach $20,000-$40,000 at auction. A Raymond “4 in 1 Justice” five-gallon gas pump is unusual in that the cylinder is housed inside a glass box. Professionally restored, it is cataloged with a $15,000$20,000 estimate. Of the 900 gas globes in the Moore collection, one of

the best is a brilliantly colorful Maker.” The image was example with an Indian chief entirely hand-painted, so no logo that advertises Musgo two globes of its type were Gasoline, “Michigan’s Mile (Continued on page 19)

“The Weapon Hunter” Premieres On Monday, Oct. 5 Antique Weaponry Series Will Be Hosted By Paul Shull History buff and restoration expert Paul Shull goes on a quest to get his hands on some of the world’s rarest and most remarkable pieces of military history in the new Smithsonian Channel original series, “The Weapon Hunter.” The sixepisode series chronicles Shull’s adventures as he finds, fixes, and fires the antique weapons that have been used throughout history. The show premieres Monday, Oct. 5, at 8 p.m. EST. Shull enlists the aid of a loosely knit network of historyobsessed collectors. They’ve spent decades and small fortunes amassing surprising and extraordinary military collections that rival those found anywhere. Now, they’re opening their doors to their secret world to allow Shull the chance to come face to face with history. The series premiere will find Shull in the Pacific Northwest, where he assists an enthusiastic collector who is hoping to get his prized possession, a World War II-era Sherman M10 Tank, back on the road in time for Veterans Day. While searching for parts needed for the rebuild, Shull scours the stock of other tankobsessed collectors scattered along the West Coast, gets behind the wheel of the Sherman’s most feared rival,

the dreaded German Tiger, and fires off some rounds from a tank-busting cannon. Other episodes will include the following: “Sniper Rifles” will air Monday, Oct. 12, at 8 p.m. EST. Shull sets out on a crosscountry quest to settle a 70year-old argument about which was the deadliest sniper rifle of World War II. To settle this dispute, Shull turns to collectors who help him get his hands on sniper versions of the British Lee Enfield, the American M1 Garand, the German Mauser K98, and the Soviet SVT40. Along the way, he gets caught up in a quest for the holy grail of the collecting world, authentic World War II sniper scopes. Shull puts the best World War II rifles to the test, under the guidance of an ex-special forces marksman who introduces him to what being a sniper is all about. “Civil War Cannons” will air Monday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. EST. Shull goes on a journey into the past to compare the greatest cannons of the Civil War. He travels through the backwoods of Tennessee, the hills of Kentucky, and the mountains of Oregon in hopes of finding and firing the two deadliest pieces of light ★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★★

at 8 p.m. EST. Shull goes on a quest to find and fire one of the most advanced weapons of the Second World War: the Nazi’s legendary FG-42 assault rifle. Developed during the height of World War II, the FG-42 light machine gun was designed to be carried into battle by Hitler’s paratroopers, the dreaded Fallschirmjager. But getting his hands on one won’t be easy. Only a few dozen FG-42s are known to exist in North America, and these rare firearms can sell for $300,000 at auction. Even if he can track one down, convincing the owner to let him fire this valuable weapon may be an impossible task.

CABIN FEVER AUCTIONS

!!! CONSIGNMENTS WANTED !!!

“Monster Machine Gun” will air Monday, Nov. 2, at 8 p.m. EST. Shull travels to the Deep South to rebuild a ferocious anti-aircraft weapon from World War II: the Quad 50. Four .50 caliber machine guns linked together and fired from an electronic turret, the Quad 50 once downed Luftwaffe aircraft and brought down sniper nests. This firepower first saw action in World War II and was used extensively in the Korean War and Vietnam. But Quad 50s are rarely seen today, and working versions are even scarcer. “The Weapon Hunter” (Continued from page 14)

be one of only a handful of working models in North America. “Flamethrowers” will air Monday, Nov. 9, at 8 p.m. EST. Shull sets out on his most dangerous quest yet when he attempts to find and fire one of history’s most terrifying weapons, the flamethrower. But tracking down one of these rare weapons will not be easy. In an effort to keep them out of private hands, the U.S. government destroyed many of them following World War II. These days, finding spare parts, let alone a functioning unit, is quite rare. With the help of a super-collector and one the world’s leading flamethrower experts, he’ll try to rebuild a rare model from World War II and get a firsthand lesson in how it helped turn the tide of the war in the Pacific. “The Weapon Hunter” is

produced by Cream Productions in association with Smithsonian Channel and Blue Ant Media. David Brady and Kate Harrison are the executive producers for Cream Productions. Tim Evans, David Royle and Charles Poe serve as executive producers for Smithsonian Channel. The Smithsonian Channel, owned by Showtime Networks Inc. and the Smithsonian Institution, is where curiosity lives, inspiration strikes and wonders never cease. The Smithsonian Channel combines the storytelling prowess of Showtime with the unmatched resources and rich traditions of the Smithsonian to create award-winning programming that shines new light on popular genres such as air and space, history, science, nature, and pop culture. It’s that time of year again when the Mullica Hill merchants host their 46th annual Fall Festival. This year the festival will take place on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Step back in time for a unique Civil War living history program. Attendees will experience Civil War camp life, a weapons display, baking on an open fire, candle dipping as well as a medical display and Civil War re-enactment. There will also be music by a Civil War-era band. Charles H. Harrison, a local writer and historian, will be at The Front Porch Antiques to sign his book “No Longer Warriors,” based on his great-grandfather ’s experience at Gettysburg. The book, inspired by the personal account of a Union soldier wounded at Gettysburg, was produced as a play and performed on stage by a professional theater company. It is the story of wounded soldiers who experience terror and miracles in a house on the battlefield as the fighting rages around them. For the little ones, there will be face painting and pumpkin decorating, and the merchants will have special displays and treats in their antique, collectible and specialty shops. Crafters, food and live music will add to the festivities. Pumpkins, corn stalks
