Get Ready For The Mullica Hill Merchants Fall Festival

A Doll For All Seasons Annual Show And Sale To Take Place On Oct. 9

Event Will Include Civil War Re-Enactment Fall is in the air, and the sound of cannons is resonating throughout the village. It’s that time of year again, when the Mullica Hill Merchants host their annual Fall Festival. The 47th event will take place on Saturday, Oct. 8, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Step back in time to a Civil War living history program.

Attendees may experience Civil War camp life, a weapons display, baking on an open fire, candle dipping, as well as a medical display and Civil War re-enactment. The experience of the Civil War era will be heightened as attendees listen to music by a Civil War band. In the evening, attendees may stroll through the campsite as tales of the war are conveyed by the actors portraying soldiers.

Charles H. Harrison, a writer and historian, will be at The Front Porch Antiques to sign copies of his book, “No Longer Warriors,” which is based on his great-grandfather’s experience at Gettysburg. The book, inspired by the personal account of a Union soldier wounded at Gettysburg, was produced as a play and performed on stage by a professional theater company.

It is the story of wounded soldiers who experience terror and miracles in a house on the battlefield as the fighting rages around them.

For the little ones there will be face painting, pumpkin decorating, pony rides, and, of course, the merchants will have special displays and treats in their antique, collectible and specialty shops. Crafters, food, and live

music will add to the festivities.

Pumpkins, corn stalks and chrysanthemums will adorn the mile-long North and South Main Street.

Fall events such as this will kick off the opening of several new shops in Mullica Hill. Stop by and help welcome Peach Tree Antiques and Vintage Finds at 36 South Main St. as well as, in the same location, White Washed, a home furnishings shop offering a light take on painted antiques.

Papernut has expanded to offer kitchen essentials at The Mercantile. Canary Row is an antique co-op recently opened at 33 South Main St., with vintage and repurposed furniture along with vintage music and guitars.

Travel north to 52 North Main St. to the home of Deeply Rooted vintage and antique finds. Rustic, farm-style and live plants are the base of this quaint little shop. At the same location will be The Other Red Barn, a co-op with different vendors and food. Across the street is Holy Tomato, which just welcomed a winery to its location.

A lot of good things are happening in Mullica Hill, and there are more to come.

The village is on the State and National Historic Registry.

The Central Penn Doll Collectors Club’s annual show and sale, titled “A Doll for All Seasons,” will be held Sunday, Oct. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year, there will be a new location. The show will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center, located at 80 Rocherty Road in Lebanon, Pa. The Expo Center is located off of Route 72 and 5 miles from the Pennsylvania Turnpike exit 266 Lebanon/Lancaster. The hall is large, well-lit, and handicapped-accessible.

There is ample parking and an on-site ATM. The indoor food concession will be open throughout the show.

Show admission will be $5 ($4 with an ad). Children under age 12, accompanied by an adult, will be admitted canvas circus banner from the Clarke Bros. miniature circus depicting six performers. The collection of Frank and Sue Watkins follows the Goldman items and consists largely of fine examples of pewter tableware, folk art, and furniture.

As Saturday’s sale opens up to a variety of consignors, bidders will get the chance to purchase an important New York William & Mary walnut tea table, a Lancaster County painted poplar dower chest with three arched panels and potted tulip decoration, a Pennsylvania redware pie plate attributed to the Diehl Pottery with rare tulip decoration, and many other epitomes of fine American craftsmanship. Also of note is a copy of “Birch’s Views,” formally titled “The City of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania North America as it appeared in the Year 1800.”

The candlesticks, 15th- and 16thcentury European examples in rare forms, had previously appeared in the renowned Lear collection offered at Christie’s in 1998.

By Shawn Surmick In 1991, a talented mathematician by the name of Richard Garfield started work on creating a unique fantasybased card game that combined elements of strategy and mathematics. With the digital revolution already underway and technologically advanced home video game consoles a reality at the time, the belief that a complex card game could gain traction was a gamble that most companies would not have attempted. By 1993, in collaboration with collectible card game company Wizards of the Coast, the first release of “Magic: The Gathering� would hit retail shelves with very little fanfare. The game was cautiously stocked by most comic book and specialty retailers, who considered the complex play mechanics of a game that played like a cross between chess and poker to be much too complex for the average enthusiast. Other up-andcoming collectible card-based games were already available on store shelves at the time, and they did little to garner subsequent sales.

Still, “Magic: The Gathering� (called “Magic� for short) had a unique fantasy element that appealed to a lot of enthusiasts, and the cards contained some of the best artwork ever to grace a collectible card game at the time.

Surprising most retailers,

sports card grading business now grade and certify nonsports cards like “Magic: The Gathering� game cards.

Because a prominent secondary market has readily developed and some cards are now worth tens of thousands of dollars each, the creators of “Magic: The Gathering� maintain a reserved list of valuable game cards that the company has vowed to never reprint ever again. A lot of these cards were popular in earlier series that gave the player various abilities that made the game unbalanced. As a result, the game’s creators decided to limit the use of these cards in later decks, which caused speculators to attempt to corner the market by buying up any and all available stock.

Because the company has vowed to never reprint a lot of these cards, critics maintain the the creators are unfairly influencing the secondary market and if they would reprint some of these cards prices would drop across the board. Ironically, what some of these critics fail to understand is that the reason the reserved list exists is to ensure the secondary marketplace remains healthy and that anyone who has paid a significant sum to obtain some of the reserved list cards doesn’t risk losing their investment as a result of any subsequent reprintings. It is due to this fact and the popularity of the game that a lot of financially minded investors

have seriously started to consider “Magic� as a valid alternative asset class. Websites and various YouTube commenters regularly remark on what cards are steadily increasing in value while specialty sites have popped up that offer valuation tools for any up-and-coming speculator.

One of my current favorite Youtubers who offers incredibly useful videos on investing and the financial aspect of “Magic: The Gathering� is known as Alpha Investments.

The Youtuber behind the catchy name is an energetic young man by the name of Rudy who became obsessed with the game when he was in school. With a degree in corporate finance among his credentials, he extols advice and suggestions on investing in “Magic� like any smooth talking corporate raider would. I relate highly to his videos and advise any enthusiast to check out his YouTube channel under the name Alpha Investments. Just don’t get jealous when you see him spouting advice while standing in front of tens of thousands of dollars’ worth of sealed boxes of “Magic� game cards from some of the most beloved series throughout the game’s history.

Whether or not one chooses to invest in “Magic: The Gathering� game cards doesn’t matter. The game has already left its proverbial

The “Magic� Of Investing Or Just Smoke And Mirrors? the game slowly captured the hearts and minds of consumers. First came the stereotypical fan boys who relished the “Dungeons and Dragons�like experience. After they were hooked, hardcore computer gamers took notice and opened the game up to more casual fans. By 1995, with the internet revolution in full swing, word of mouth spread, and so did the game’s sales.

By 1999, the game was so popular that toy giant Hasbro bought Wizards of the Coast and with it the “Magic: The Gathering� franchise. The rest became history, with sales of “Magic� largely responsible for Hasbro’s current growth.

Today, well over 20 million players enjoy “Magic: The Gathering� worldwide, and that number does not include the multitude of so called “closet collectors� like myself who simply enjoy collecting the product but rarely ever play. “Magic� is so big that tournaments are now televised events, and stores offering the product host tournaments and offer cash prizes.

The secondary market for “Magic: The Gathering� is huge due to the fact that much like other modern-era based collectibles, the game’s manufacturer continues to create and discontinue sets and series (called blocks in the “Magic� world) and limits the print run of various game cards in each and every set.

The special automobile sale will offer what can only be described as the “dream dozen,” which are 12 extraordinary, prestigious, and revered cars certainly on the bucket list of most automobile enthusiasts.

Models from 1914 through 2003 will be offered. Many are in extraordinary condition.

Good things come in threes when it comes to the examples of Ford vehicles in this sale. The first is lot #3, a 1956 colonial white Ford Thunderbird, estimated at $45,000$60,000. This example of a first generation Thunderbird has won numerous awards, including the national Antique Automobile Club of America honors at Hershey. With less than 80,000 miles, this 312 V8-powered Ford is complemented with a handsome black-and-white interior.

The second is lot #10, a metallic grey 1968 Mustang “Eleanor,” estimated at $100,000-$125,000. Built by the storied Cinema Vehicle Services company and autographed by leading man Nicholas Cage, this automobile was manufactured using the molds from 2000’s “Gone in 60 Seconds” star car. Now, as the summer heat diminishes and the fall approaches, Heritage Promotions is preparing for the 59th Shenandoah Antiques Expo to be held Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Oct. 14, 15, and 16, at the Augusta Expo (I-64, Exit 91) in Fishersville, Va. This semiannual event attracts over 300 dealers and thousands of shoppers, who often spend the weekend searching the exhibition halls, four barns, tents and open exhibits for that special treasure. Locals and seasoned vendors and collectors recognize the show as one of the premier fall (and spring) events in the Shenandoah Valley. Many dealers consider the expo a “don’t miss event” and return

twice each year, traveling from Maine and Florida and all points in between.

The Shenandoah Antiques Expo has a long history and established reputation for quality vendors who offer a vast array of merchandise fine 18th- and 19th-century American and English period antiques, eclectic collectibles, architectural and restoration pieces, as well as estate jewelry, glassware and other fun memorabilia - all at fair prices.

The extravaganza attracts antiques aficionados from all along the eastern seaboard and mid-Atlantic regions. One first-time attendee from New York stated, “I have shopped antiques shows up and down the Atlantic Coast for years.

By Karl Pass Barbara Hood’s Country Store was a well-known establishment in West Grove, Chester County, Pa., originally situated on 184 acres. Barbara and her husband, Richard, today own 26 acres with the property. Barbara’s father-inlaw, Charles Hood, bought the land in 1931. It had been an operating dairy. Barbara and Richard bought the dairy from Richard’s father in 1962. They donated part of the land, which is where the Jennersville Hospital is today.

The property consists of a farmhouse and a “sales barn” adjacent to a reproduction 18th-century log cabin.

Material from the original barn was used to build the cabin. The shop (country store) was located in the 1795 smokehouse and housed country store goods and primitives. The business specialized in country home decor.

“We strictly sold Americana,” said Barbara. “No imports.”

“We had the store for 35 years,” said Barbara. The

Exhibitors from across the Northeast will fill the school’s cafeteria, stage, corridors, and lobby with collectible, rare, antique, modern, fine, scholarly and used books, manuscripts, prints, maps, autographs, photographs, postcards and every other sort of printed ephemera. From Our Files A Chip Off The Ol’ (Frisian) Block

By Andrew Richmond There are many types of carving that fit under the big umbrella of “chip carving,” and one of my favorites is Frisian-style carving. The Frisians are an ethnic group with Germanic roots who live today along the coastal regions of the Netherlands and Germany. The spelling

confusion between Friesian and Frisian is not helped by the fact that they live around Friesland in the Netherlands and Frisia in Germany (which technically was Frisia in Denmark until the 1860s, but there’s already enough going on here and the various Frisian communities are still rather divided after centuries of being shuffled around among various European confederacies and countries). We will opt for Frisian, as the people this is most associated with in American decorative arts were typically Pennsylvania Germans.

Frisian carving in decorative arts refers to lightly carved decoration on furniture and small decorative objects. The designs are often rife with traditional Germanic symbolism – stags and hunt scenes, lilies, unicorns – as well geometric elements, with

a draftsman-like precision to their layout – circles, triangles, and particularly pinwheels or fylfots. For many collectors of Americana, poplar is the one true sign of an American example of Frisian carving (the New Jersey spoon racks are almost invariably poplar). For just about any other wood type (particularly oak and mahogany), it is more difficult to attribute specifically.

This picture frame is a later example, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century. Nicely carved, it sold for just under $300 at Garth’s Auctions in 2009.
