The real estate, consisting of three acres and the threestory sandstone and cedar shake residence, will be offered at 1 p.m. The circa 1887 building was designed by architect Frank Furness and built by iron baron Edward Brooke II. The present owners are retiring from the bed and breakfast business, which is what

the mansion has been used as for the past 20 years. It retains over 95 percent of its original architectural features, such as a circular rosewood library, and has a total of 42 rooms. The contents to be sold include furniture, oriental rugs, artwork, and various household items. Fall Antique And Bottle Show At Batsto Village Slated For Sept. 30 The annual Batsto Fall Antique, Glass, and Bottle Show will be held on Sunday, Sept 30. This show has been going on for more than 30 years and takes place in Batsto Village in Wharton State Forest at 31 Batsto Road in Hammonton, N.J. The show runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is sponsored by the Batsto Citizen Committee Inc. (BCCI), the oldest such friends or citizens

Poster Passion Leads To Records At Swann Text-Free Variant Of “Sutro Baths” 1896 Poster Promoting Former San Francisco Landmark Brings $23,400 A mammoth auction of vintage posters on Aug. 1 set at least six auction records, including a new high price for “Sutro Baths.” The text-free variant of the 1896 poster, promoting a former San Francisco landmark, brought $23,400. The exhibition for Swann Galleries’ annual summer auction was overflowing, taking both exhibition floors at the house’s Flatiron district premises. Alphonse Mucha’s “Times of the Day” was the top lot of the auction, selling to an institution for $40,000. Other Mucha works received significant attention from collectors, such as “Bières de la Meuse,” 1897, selling for $17,500 over an $8,000$12,000 estimate, and “Salon des Cent,” 1896, which brought $10,000. This Week: Fall Is Auction Season

Peter Seibert, a native Pennsylvanian, grew up in the antiques business and remains closely tied to auction houses, collectors, and dealers. Professionally, he has served as a museum director and public historian in Pennsylvania, New Mexico, and Virginia. He holds an M.A. in American Studies from Penn State and has authored two books and numerous articles on decorative arts, interior design, and history.

Once a month, vendors fill two large buildings at the Atlanta Expo Centers in Atlanta, Ga., with their amazing pieces hoping they will become a favorite for someone new. The most recent show ran from Aug. 9 to 12. Roy Leverett, who has been a vendor since 1995, sells mahogany and oak furniture. One of his pieces at a recent show was a utilitarian piece, a filing cabinet with four shelves and a drawer tucked inside. The piece was made out of oak

and was from Grand Rapids, Mich., ca. 1890-1910. The asking price was $925. Standing among flatware, goblets, candlesticks and other pieces of sterling silver, Henry Weaver, filling in for his father at their booth, described a sixpiece Chantilly silver tea set by Gorham. The pieces were of relief silver design, meaning the details are pushed out from the inside, creating a three-dimensional effect. The set was dated from the early 1900s and was tagged $9,900, a fraction of retail pricing, which can go as high as $20,000. David Stark spoke of a stunning Thomas Brooks mirror he sold to a collector. Brooks was a furniture maker in the mid-19th century that became famous for his Victorian Renaissance Revival style. Country auctions are a wonderful place to learn about antiques. It is where you can see things in their original locations and come to understand the nature of how possessions are accumulated. It is also where great treasures and singularly hideous pieces of junk can rest on a table and be sold within moments of each other. And, of course, you can’t miss the ham and bean soup where your spoon stands upright because it is so thick.

I write the column today from the 90-plus degree heat of tidewater Virginia, but heart and head are back in Pennsylvania. September was always one of my favorite months, as it was the time for early fall country auctions, that big push of sales that occurs before the weather gets dicey for outdoor auctions. Autumn auctions always seem to bring out really great stuff. I was thinking back on a sale that a local auctioneer ran in Liverpool, Perry County. The house sale was one of those that were common 20 years ago and less so today. It was an elderly couple who passed away within a short span of

drawers. I will say that such items were not common to see at auctions in that neck of the woods (far more empire and Victorian). The piece was something that I had always wanted for my own collection, and it had lots of condition problems. When you are a young collector with student loans, you have to be a bottom feeder and buy the pieces that are rough in the hopes that you can upgrade later. So, I bid on the chest, and the pricing went nuts. I can still feel the anger and frustration as my hoped for $200 chest suddenly blew into the thousands of dollars. What happened? In this case, the crowd had done their homework, and it turned out to be not just a plain Federal low case but a signed Philadelphia piece worth a boatload of money. I am sure that the new buyer had it into a restoration shop within days and that it soon magically appeared in a dealers window with a good five figure price tag on it.

The sale was memorable to me for two lots and two lessons learned. The first was when, from a box of household items, the auctioneer pulled out a massive treen bowl. All of a sudden, the electricity started to fly. Big wooden treen from Pennsylvania is not that common, and everyone started bidding. The price jumped to around $100, and it sold. About five minutes later, the buyer walked up and dropped the bowl in front of the auctioneer. It shattered into a million fragments. Why? Because it was completely rotten. I never knew if he got his money back, but the lesson to me was to really inspect items. Everyone jumped at the chance to buy something rare and fresh without realizing that it was rotten. The customers were eager to buy, and serious collectors were in abundance demonstrating that the show has a loyal customer base. Many vendors had the best show they had experienced in several years. Sales were strong. And why not? Over its 30 years of shows, the Shenandoah Antiques Expo remains one of the strongest and most popular antique shows. Highly respected by dealers and antique aficionados, the Shenandoah Expo is known as a show of enduring quality encompassing diverse interests in all types and periods of antiques and intriguing collectibles. The show continuously draws crowds not only from Virginia and bordering states, but also New England. Now Heritage Promotions is planning for the fall show, the 63rd Shenandoah Antiques Expo, to be held at the Augusta Expo at 277 Expo Road (I-64, Exit 91) in Fishersville, Va. Weather can be a friend or foe for an antique show, particularly those that are primarily (or entirely) held outdoors. Warm, clear sunny days can result in great crowds for outdoor shows. Whereas rain? Pretty much the opposite, even just the threat of rain. Well, the spring 2018 edition of the Shenandoah Antiques Expo faced three straight days of rain, including some periods of heavy downpours. The silver lining? Apparently, the spring rains also meant that outside plans at home got postponed and folks looked for inside options. And that is the beauty of having one of the largest inside and outside shows on the East Coast. The Shenandoah Antiques Expo typically has 250-plus inside and 100-plus outside exhibitors. And yes, not surprisingly, the rain caused some of the loyal outside dealers to cancel. And many who arrived and tried to make the best of it packed up and left when it was apparent the rain just wasnâ€™t going to stop. Attendance was also impacted, but not that significantly. The show drew 3,600 shoppers (the show average is 4,500). It was enough to

Unveils New Poster Price Guide scholars,” said company president Jack Rennert. “Since you have a full history, every poster, estimated price, and final sale, you can learn about sales trends for individual posters, artists or the artistic movements, such as Art Nouveau.” Since the late 1980s, Poster Auctions International Inc. has held three to four auctions a year. Its gallery is located at 26 W. 17th St. in New York City and hosts rotating exhibitions of original poster art. Additionally, it offers for sale a wide catalogue of “Contemporary Classics” poster originals from the 1960s to the 1980s, with specialties in local New York topics, plus poster art from late 20th-century Polish, Japanese, and Israeli designers. The gallery is also a veritable bookstore of research and coffee-table volumes on

poster art, as well as an extensive research archive, open to the public by appointment. Jack Rennert is regarded as among the foremost authorities on rare vintage posters. He’s authored (either solo or in collaboration) two dozen books on poster art, including catalogue raisonnés for Leonetto Cappiello and Alphonse Mucha; studies on bicycle and circus posters; and Buffalo Bill’s Wild West. His book, “Posters of the Belle Epoque,” has sold over 30,000 copies. Rennert is currently at work on the definitive catalogue of Edward Penfield’s graphic art. “Star Trek IV” Original Art Boosts Heritage Auctions’ Movie Posters Auction Above $1.6 Million The largest and arguably most detailed “Star Trek” poster designed by renowned commercial artist Bob Peak sold for $46,800 to claim toplot honors in Heritage Auctions’ Movie Posters Auction on July 28 and 29 in Dallas, Texas. The event produced sell-through rates of 93.9 percent by value and 94.8 percent of lots and produced total sales of $1,632,645. Revered for his work that helped advance the design of modern movie posters, Peak’s work is coveted by collectors. The 40-by-57.5-inch “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” by Bob Peak (Paramount, 1987), framed original mixed media poster artwork, is on illustration board and mounted on foamcore. It was also signed by the artist. “Bob Peak’s work is very popular right now among movie posters collectors,” stated Heritage Auctions Vintage Posters director Grey Smith.

The detailed “Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home” (Paramount, 1987) poster designed by renowned commercial artist Bob Peak sold for $46,800. The 40-by-57.5-inch framed original mixed media poster artwork is on illustration board and signed by the artist. “He has designed posters for some of the most popular movies of all time, like ‘My Fair Lady’ and ‘Camelot,’ and then

‘Star Trek,’ ‘Apocalypse Now’ and several James Bond films. His extraordinary talent and his impact on the evolution of movie poster design has caught the attention of a lot of serious collectors.” A flurry of competitive bids pushed the final price for the “Regeneration” (Norman, 1923) three-sheet to more than three times its high pre-auction estimate when it sold for $40,800. A rarity sold for the first time through Heritage Auctions, this stone lithograph three-sheet is culturally important because it traces back to when Richard Norman, the film’s producer and director, set up a studio catering to African-American audiences eager to see themselves reflected on the big screen. A pair of posters from one of the most popular films of all time brought matching sale prices of $26,400. Offered for

the first time ever at Heritage Auctions, three “Casablanca” (Warner Brothers, R-1953) Italian photobustas soared to more than three times the high pre-auction estimate. A “Casablanca” first post-war release German A1, painted by Hans Otto Wendt, drew the same final price. Equally rare, this poster also made its auction debut at Heritage. One of the most activelypursued posters was a “The Empire Strikes Back” (20th Century Fox, 1980) one sheet, which sparked bids from 20 collectors before more than quadrupling its low pre-auction estimate when it sold for $26,400, the most ever paid for a “Star Wars” concept poster. Considered to be one of the rarest posters of the “Star Wars” trilogy, this poster is one of just a handful known to have survived. It is unique in that it features the

complete artwork by artist Roger Kastel, who is perhaps known best for creating the iconic “JAWS” poster, and also for using the original color palette for the second film in the trilogy. The poster features lead characters Han Solo, Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia, as well as C3PO, R2D2 and Chewbacca, but also includes images of Lando Calrissian, Boba Fett, Cloud City and more. A one-sheet “Superman” cartoon stock (Paramount, 1941) sold for $24,000. A Swedish insert poster for “Casablanca” (Warner Brothers, 1943) sold for $22,800, and a one-sheet for “Creature From the Black Lagoon” (Universal International, 1954) realized $19,200. Labor Day Collectibles The first Labor Day celebration is believed to have taken place over 130 years ago, and it has been an important and much observed event ever since. Launched in New York City by the Knights of Labor, a union umbrella group, on Sept. 5, 1882, the intention was to honor the American working man. On that day, 10,000 workers marched down the streets of New York City in a loosely organized parade. Following this came picnicking, speechmaking, and, in the evening, dancing and fireworks. It was a rousing success. The first state to officially call it a holiday was Oregon in 1887, followed by New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts. In 1894, the U.S. Congress made it a national holiday. In those early years, up until the advent of World War I, Labor Day was vigorously celebrated with huge parades of workers, tremendous labor gatherings, much bombastic oratory, picnics and sporting events of all types. In many ways, it was like the Fourth of July in September, a family outing day. Today, it has become just another holiday on the calendar, a day off from work for most and among the last days to go to the beach. There has

been, however, a return of the old-fashioned Labor Day parades in certain cities. Labor Day Collectibles Magazine and newspaper illustrations, cartoons and articles praising, lampooning or reporting on Labor Day activities can add some interesting items to a collection. A Mobile, Ala., newspaper, for instance, dated Sept. 5, 1910, ran a comic illustration of how the holiday might have been observed during the caveman era, several million years earlier. Another illustration, this time from the magazine “The Youth’s Companion,” in the Sept. 5, 1912, issue, gave its impression of Labor Day in Kittenville. Pin-back buttons, intended for parade participants or supports to wear on Labor Day, are in demand by collectors, as are posters and placards of these events. Other memorabilia items related to Labor Day include the commemorative stamp issued by the U.S. Post Office in 1956. Also to be found in this same category are the cacheted and uncacheted First Day Covers of the Labor Day stamp prepared for its official first day of sale. In the America of the notso-distant past, the entire town and all of the countryside from miles around turned out for every patriotic holiday to watch the parade, picnic on the town

This is E. Nash Co.’s “Labor Day Series 1” two-postcard set. green, listen to the endless orations, and mingle with old and new friends. Life was hard, and the few occasions that came up for relaxation and leisure were eagerly grabbed. It became profitable for firms and local photographers to sell postcards of these festivities, including the Labor Day parade. Folks bought them as souvenirs of a fun time and as mementos to send through the mail. Often, the cards were on sale for only a few days following the event. Kodak successfully marketed a special camera in the years from 1900 to 1920, which allowed the picture taker to process his snapshots not as regular photos but on postcard stock. This made it much easier to mail off the results to friends and relatives. There were also similar offerings by professional photographers in producing picture postcards in small quantities for local sales. Because these black-andwhite real photo postcards so perfectly caught Americans at work, home, playing, and doing a myriad of activities, they are sought after in today’s market. In some cases they represented perhaps the only picture of a long-ago event or place.

Happily, a modest number of them about Labor Day have come down to us through the years. They show all sorts of holiday parades, official activities, and people having fun doing everything from picnicking to playing games. But most of all, they portray Labor Day being celebrated in small-town America. During the first 20 years of the 20th century, several American postcard publishers managed to capture both the

pride of Labor and the frolicking of the laborer and his family on their day. Sometime around 1908, E. Nash Company produced a two-card set portraying a very heroic Labor in poster style. It was identified as “Labor Day Series No. 1.” Evidently, more sets were planned but never produced. The Fred C. Lounsbury Co. sold, through a diverse group of wholesalers and distributors, a four-card Series No. 2046. Put on sale in 1907, the

scenes portray Uncle Sam pulling back a U.S. flag to proudly display a factory, a working man with a lunch pail, a family on picnic for the holiday, and Labor herself leading Santa Claus, George Washington, Uncle Sam, the New Year’s baby, and a Thanksgiving Day turkey on parade. These cards will also be found with the Lenox Manufacturing Co. imprint on the front. This was the successor in 1912 to Lounsbury’s Continued on page 23

The cost to have TAC authenticate an item is $25 per item (with a value up to $4,999); $50 per item (with a value of $5,000-$14,999); $100 per item (with a value of $15,000-$49,999); or $200 per item (with a value over $50,000). The price includes a tamper-proof hologram, entry into the database, unique serial number, 1-10 grading (good for day-of only) and a market value estimate. Not all TAC items are directly issued a certificate of authenticity (COA), as some clients prefer to have their items tagged with a TAC specific number or a hologram. A COA from TAC is only legitimate if accompanied by the item with matching number (item and certificate must match). COAs may be purchased after an item has been tagged, but tagged items must be presented in person to a TAC employee to obtain a COA. A TAC authentication tag cannot be issued based on a photo. For larger collections, TAC is often willing and able to travel to that person’s location. TAC reserves the right to not tag items it cannot verify as authentic or of undetermined age. It also reserves the right to remove a tag should it learn new information about an item that would negate its being authentic. These circumstances are rare, but when it does happen, TAC happily refunds the authentication cost to the original purchaser, should the item be in their possession. If for any reason an item’s serial number becomes damaged, TAC does not replace it with the same serial number. If an item’s hologram with serial number has been damaged, TAC will assess a fee of $25 in order to issue a new hologram and serial number for the damaged item. They can also search by using a keyword. For example, if someone keys “Mobil” into the search bar, all items with the word “Mobil” in the title will be instantly displayed. There are certain items the company will not grade, however. These include repainted or restored singlesided signs; reproductions; “age unknown” signs (or signs that can’t be verified as being legitimately old or original); clocks, where the faces can be interchanged with reproductions; and glass-faced thermometers (like PAM type, jumbo dials). Here’s how the process works: An item is submitted to TAC, where an employee will review it and determine if it is authentic. Items deemed to be authentic will receive a TAC number, which is typically placed on the front edge of the item. TAC will grade the item on a 1-10 scale, good only for the day of authentication. TAC utilizes the Matthews Auctions LLC Grading System. TAC will also give clients a general market price estimate of their item or items at the time of authentication. For

Fun Ho! Children’s Dollhouse Furniture From New Zealand New Zealand manufacturer Fun Ho! made a rare departure from its wheeled toys in the cast aluminium series with a small range of dollhouse furniture. The pieces were made at the Wellington, New Plymouth and Inglewood factories but were not part of the catalogue when production of the original toys ceased in 1982. When introduced in August 1942, the six models were as follows: no. 96 Bath, no. 97 Basin, no. 98 Toilet, no. 99 Stove, no. 100 Table, and no. 101 Chair. In 1945, a kitchen sink was added to the range as no. 102. The toilet was withdrawn around this time, and its catalogue number of 98 was given to the newly allocated Kelvinator (fridge). Some catalogue renumbering took place then, with the Bath becoming no. 95 and the Basin no. 96. A 1947 advertisement in the “New Zealand Free Lance,” once a popular New Zealand weekly newspaper, had the Table priced at one shilling and sixpence (15c), the Chair at one shilling and threepence (12c), and the Sink at two shillings (20c). The advertisement referred to the pieces as the “Kitchen Set,” although they could only be bought separately. Another 1947 “Free Lance” advertisement was for the “Bathroom Set,” but again the prices were for single items. The Bath cost two shillings (20c) and the Basin one shilling and ninepence (18c). “Fun Ho! Repro” magazine, Vol. 7 No. 4 (April 1996), published by the Fun Ho! National Toy Museum, records that the original four-leg sink design was a copy of the American

manufacturer Arcade’s catalogue number 649, and the table no. 648. The chair was another kitchen model copied from a cast-iron Arcade toy. Bathroom pieces also have links to Arcade. The Bath was copied from Arcade toy no. 676. Both the toilet and the basin were copies from the American manufacturer’s range, as well. But the bath and the toilet lacked the detail of the Arcade toys, with the bath having no taps and the toilet no seat cover. Fun Ho! did not manufacture the stool that was part of Arcade’s bathroom set. No records are known to exist in New Zealand to verify whether these were authorized or unauthorized copies. There was even more copying by Fun Ho! with its dollhouse furniture line. The updated sink design, with cupboards and drawers, was copied from a Protex (PM) plastic toy, and the kelvinator and the stove were modifications of other plastic Protex designs. It has been said the least appealing feature of the second sink design was that no taps were included. Cream, dark green and dark blue seem to have been popular colors for the Fun Ho! tables and chairs during the 1940s. Fun Ho! chairs had the seats painted in a different color than the frame. The chairs originally had a back with two open panels, as seen on the Arcade version, that was replaced in the 1950s by a flat back style due to casting difficulties. Outlines of those original markings are visible in the revised design. Molding plates contained 14 chairs and seven tables. The kelvinator, stove and updated sink have hollow backs, and the bath only two

Keeping the bath steady are four short legs or feet cast into the underside. A bright yellow logo transfer replaced the gold one fitted to the bottom of the bath, and to most other Fun Ho! toys circa 1949. “Fun Ho! Collectors Reference,” fourth edition (1997), lists all doll’s furniture sets with a singular apostrophe, which is kept for this article. A nine-piece boxed set known as the “Doll’s Furniture Set” was issued from 1955 to 1958. This presentation comprised the original sink, a table, four chairs, bath, basin and toilet. No new catalogue number was allocated to the toilet at this time, number 98 being given to the kelvinator in 1945. Three different boxed furniture sets were available between 1959 and 1965. Doll’s Set No. 1 comprised a table and four chairs; Doll’s Set No. 2 had the bath, basin, toilet and a chair; and Doll’s Set No. 3, the sink, kelvinator and stove. While the updated sink design was included in Set no. 3, it is not known if this was for the set’s entire catalogue life. In 1990, the Fun Ho! National Toy Museum opened on the Inglewood site where the toys had been made. In 1996, boxed sets of the doll’s house furniture cast from the original molds, in both the nine-piece and three-piece packaging, were available from the museum as reproduction models. The Inglewood Development Trust purchased the Fun Ho! National Toy Museum in 1999 and relocated the premises to 25 Rata St., Inglewood, where toymaker Richard Jordan continues to make the reproduction doll’s house furniture. Larger models are stamped “Repro” on the underside to distinguish them from the original models. Other differences are the powder coated paint finish, brighter colors and more hand detailing.

Little original Fun Ho! doll’s house furniture surfaces today. Play-worn original pieces seen in May 2018 were priced from $25 (U.S. $17) for a single chair, as opposed to $15 (U.S. $11) for a “repro” version. Three original sinks were priced from $35-$70 (U.S. $24-$48), a rare brown paint finish being more expensive than those in light blue. An original bath and basin were marked at $35 (U.S. $24) each, compared with $20 (U.S. $14) for a “repro” bath, and $25 (U.S. $17) for the “repro” basin. The chairs are considered the easiest of the original models to obtain because the single chair included in Doll’s Set No. 2 seems to have become separated from the other pieces. There were also

Richard Jordan from the Fun Ho! National Toy Museum has known boxed, original Doll’s Sets Nos. 1, 2 and 3 to sell for $400 (U.S. $277) each, when complete and in good condition. These boxed sets would

be extremely rare now. Only small quantities would have been made for New Zealand’s domestic market, with a population of approx. 2.36 million when they debuted in 1959. In baseball, a strikeout occurs when a batter accumulates three strikes during one single time at bat. A strikeout is a statistic recorded for both pitchers (the more, the better) and batters (fewer is best) and is denoted by the letter “K.” The use of “K” for a strikeout was apparently invented by Henry Chadwick, a newspaper journalist back in the late 1880s. Chadwick is widely credited as being the originator of the “box score” and the “baseball scorecard,” which remain largely unchanged today. Chadwick supposedly decided to use “K,” the last letter in “Struck,” to represent a “Strikeout” since the letter

“S” was already used for “Sacrifice.” Chadwick was responsible for several other scorekeeping conventions, including the use of numbers to designate player positions. The modern single-season record (1901–present) is 383 strikeouts, held by Nolan Ryan, one better than Sandy Koufax’s 382. For 55 years, Walter Johnson held the career strikeout record at 3,508. That record fell in 1982 to Nolan Ryan, who was then passed by Steve Carlton, before Ryan took the career strikeout record for good at 5,714. What’s it worth? In June 2016, a 1968 Topps Nolan Ryan Rookie Card sold for $72,100 on eBay. Although Ryan rookie cards are highly desirable,
