The organization’s fundraiser will be held in the Warwick Middle School (104 Maple Street) in Lititz, Pa. Show hours will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Admission will be $9 per person or $8 with show card or ad.

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: A Great Place To Start New Collectors the internet has shown that rare items are not that rare.

With photographs, it is rare to have multiples (political figures and generals notwithstanding) in existence, so most are truly unique items. Condition is another easily determined aspect of photographs. Faded is a definite no-no, but chipped corners are not always fatal.

Sources for collecting photographs are pretty wide

ranging. I buy a lot online (particularly images where the scene is not identified to a specific name or geographic location). However, some of my best have come from antique shops and in large lots at auctions. The trick is really to approach the subject with an open mind so as to look for and to find images in a host of different locations.

Photographs are easily

cared for in polypropylene sleeves housed in binders.

Pages can be found in a host of different locations and are very reasonable. The best part is that the binders can be stored in any number of different locales.

So, if you have a young person who is perhaps showing some interest in collecting, I would suggest looking at historic photography.

So, I have debated writing this column for a long time, but I finally decided to put it out there. We often talk about the need to identify things for collectors to afford. I think about what a young collector should consider. First is the item’s need to be reasonably priced but with the potential to grow in value. Second is the item’s portability; it should be able to live under a bed or stored in a box for a period.

Third is the item’s cool factor.

If you look at older collecting trends for young people, the most successful (stamps and sports trading cards) definitely met the criteria. I am sure that many of you got the packets of stamps every month from companies who sent them on approval. They were wonderful, exotic, and cool to look at, and none of us ever sent any back.

We bought them all. Trading cards could be acquired new with chewing gum, traded to friends, stored in a shoebox and enjoyed for years.

Okay, so what I am proposing for you to consider is probably not at the same level as these in terms of popularity, but I suspect it would meet all the criteria. What I am talking

Many of the bears were book examples that illustrated Ken Yenke’s 1990s “Teddy Bear Treasury, Volumes I and II.” With charm to spare, a Steiff 19-inch-tall browntipped mohair Clown Teddy Bear sported its original hat and ruff, glass eyes and appropriate ear button. Against an estimate of $5,500$7,500, it captured hearts as well with a $39,000 winning bid.

Let me begin by stating, very clearly, that I am neither a tax professional, nor even someone who does his own taxes. And before making any decisions about your antiques and art as they relate to your tax situation, you should consult a professional. That said, as an appraiser and consultant, many of my clients need my assistance in tax situations, from appraising items donated to museums or paying an estate tax to Uncle Sam. The tax implications of buying and selling antiques and art (all considered “collectibles” by the IRS) can be very complex. The overly simplified version is that for collectors (those who buy, but do not sell), your collections are capital assets. As such, when you sell one item, or a whole collection, you will pay a capital gains tax on any profits earned, or you can deduct any losses. Good recordkeeping is important here because you’ll need your cost basis (what you paid) to determine the gain or loss. If you sell inherited antiques, then the cost basis is set with a fair market

Finally, there are many generous souls out there who choose to donate antiques and art to museums. We talked last month about the donation process, but there are tax implications as well, and they are good! Any noncash item (such as a blanket chest, a tea service, a painting - you get the idea) donated to a museum (assuming they are a registered nonprofit) qualifies the tax payer for a tax deduction. How does one take advantage of this opportunity? Talk to a qualified appraiser. “Qualified” means an appraiser who has the appropriate education and experience and is compliant with the Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (we discussed such folks in detail a couple of months ago).

Your appraiser will be able to provide you with a Fair Market Value appraisal that will form the basis for your tax deduction. You and the recipient institution should work together to ensure that the appraiser has not only access to the item(s) but also all the relevant information about it (them) and about the donation itself (such as the official date of property transfer, which is the best date to use as the effective date of the appraisal) and the tax year in which you’ll be taking the deduction. Depending on the value of the item(s) donated, you may need to submit the

appraisal report with your tax return, or you may only need to submit IRS Form 8283 (“Noncash Charitable Contributions), part of which will be completed by the appraiser. A word of advice: the IRS does review tax returns with noncash donation deductions and will, if it deems it appropriate, adjust the amount of the deduction (usually down). A good appraisal will include only solidly substantiated values that can withstand such scrutiny. If donations are in your plan, you might start by reading IRS Publication 526 on noncash charitable donations.

For dealers, of course, antiques are business inventory, and hopefully all dealers are keeping appropriate records and reporting sales, etc. annually. It can be tricky for the large group of folks who are part-time dealers (I’ve heard them called “collector-dealers” or even “bedroom dealers”). Good records are a must so that you know what antiques you kept as business inventory and what you kept for personal use (and thus a capital asset).

Confused yet? Take my advice and consult a tax professional, and doing this now, as you are planning for your stuff, will save you (or your family) many headaches down the road.

Perhaps you don’t plan on selling your collection. What else can you do with it? You can always give it or bequeath it to your family or heirs. This, again, requires forethought and planning, and the advice of a tax professional and/or attorney. Depending on the value of an item or collection (and the estate), there is potentially a gift or estate tax to consider. If passing on your collection is your plan (you do have a plan, right?), then talk to your attorney about the

“Fritz The Cat” Original Art Leads Record-Shattering $8.3 Million Comics Auction At Heritage Robert Crumb 1969 Cover Art Sells For Record $717,000 In New York City

Robert Crumb’s 1969 “Fritz The Cat” cover art set a world record for the most valuable piece of American comic art when it sold for $717,000.

These two pieces are now tied for the second highest price ever realized at auction for Robert Crumb artwork.

Frank Frazetta’s “In Pharaoh’s Tomb” Battlestar Galactica painting original art from 1978 also ended at $191,200. Steve Ditko’s original art for page 17 from Amazing Spider-Man #23, featuring an epic battle scene between Spidey and the Green Goblin, brought $104,562. Original cover art by Jack “King” Kirby and Vince Colletta for Thor #136, which has resided in a private collection for the past 25 years, more than doubled its $40,000 estimate to end at $101,575. Joshua Middleton’s NYX #3 cover and concept art, featuring the first appearance of X-23 (Marvel, 2004) realized $71,700 – setting a record for a piece of 21st century comic art since none has sold for more.

Neal Adam’s original cover art for Batman #222 featuring a riff on The Beatles (D.C., 1970) sold for $77,675, and Dave Gibbons’ Watchmen #2 cover original art (D.C., 1986) realized $65,725.

Record-setting Comic Books Suspense Comics #3 mile high pedigree (Continental

Magazines, 1944), a golden age treasure with a NM- 9.2 grade from CBCS, was sold for $262,900 – setting a world record for the issue. This pulpstyle comic book won top lot among the auction’s comic books. This issue triumphs over the Pennsylvania pedigree VF/NM 9.0 CBCS copy that realized $173,275 in 2015 at Heritage, which at the time was the highest price ever realized at auction for a nonsuperhero comic book.

The Avengers #4 (Marvel, 1964) rose above and beyond its pre-auction estimate of $120,000 to sell for $143,400.

This copy is one out of four copies with a CGC grade of

NM/MT 9.8 – the highest reported grade of this issue.

Tales of Suspense #39 (Marvel, 1963), NM 9.4 CGC, famous for the first appearance of Iron Man, sold for $95,600.

By Mike Ivankovich Well, actually, no. When you “scrap” Sterling silver, you can take your items to a jeweler or “we buy gold” store.

They will weigh it, and pay you based upon the actual precious metal weight, the current silver spot price, and their percent-of-spot-price-payment-factor. Those items will then be melted, and the precious metal will be recovered and turned into bullion bars or some other form.

Although “silverplated” items are coated with a very thin layer of pure silver, that coating is usually so thin that it can’t be recovered in a financially feasible way.
