Cigar Store Indians, Super Heroes, And Rock Legends Auction To Feature A Variety Of Items And Memorabilia ccording to Rich Penn, the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 2 to 4, auction event will offer collectors an exceptional variety of unusual material, all without reserve. “This May, in Des Moines (Iowa), we’re bringing collectors an outstanding first class gathering from country store, soda fountain, and petroliana collections.” Penn said, adding, “We’re especially proud to be offering a small “tribe” of period cigar store Indians. It’s a rare occassion when three high quality carved Indians appear in the same auction. A 71inch-tall Indian princess, with early paint and attributed to the shop of Thomas Brooks, is sure to attract interest. She has a lovely maiden sister, too. The maiden is well carved by an unknown artist and stands 66 inches tall. They are joined by a handsomely statuesque 82-inch-tall brave. He is highly detailed with attributes from a number of artists, but also from an unknown carver. The brave shows expertly restored paint. The three period pieces are worth coming to the auction, just to see.” The Rich Penn Auction Event also includes a nice selection of salesmen’s samples such as CocaCola coolers, Karr and Qualified Range cook stoves, and a John Deere plow and Adams grader. The circa 1900 John Deere

Outdoor Antique & Vintage Street Fair Set In Historic Mullica Hill, N.J. Visit Historic Mullica Hill, N.J., on Saturday, April 26 (rain date Sunday, April 27), for the sixth annual Antique and Vintage Street Fair. Vendors from the neighboring tri-state area will be joining the Mullica Hill Merchants Association (MHMA). More than 40 vendors featuring antiques, collectibles, vintage jewelry, pottery, primitives and much more will line the sidewalks of the village along Main Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. An appraisal event, which was added to the show last year, will be offered again. Show goers may bring two items from noon to 3 p.m. or a picture to Kings Row, The Front Porch Antiques, or The Yellow Garage for a free appraisal. Last year James Koterski of History in Print had sold

two of his Antique Crocks before the start of the show and stated it was a fun day and very profitable. Rocco Dotto of Kings Row had several vendors set up in front of

his shop, and they were delighted with their sales. Antique dealer Bob Lutz was pleased and surprised at how well he did. Hazel of The Gathering Room said it was

her best sale day ever during an event. All in all, it was a wonderful show and the MHMA is looking forward to another robust year. This event is being held in conjunction with Mullica Hill’s annual Spring Open House, which typically draws a large number of visitors to town. There will be food, fun and many treasures to find. Mullica Hill is conveniently located in southern New Jersey. The village is on the National Register of Historic Places and provides a wonderful setting for antique hunters and dealers alike. This is the perfect venue for hosting an antiques event as Mullica Hill Village was voted the “Best Antiques District” by South Jersey Magazine in 2012 and “Best Antique Shopping,” with several shops voted “Best of

the Best for Stepping Back In Time,” by South Jersey Magazine in 2010. Most shops will be having in-store specials during the Antique and Vintage Street Fair. Spend the day or the

weekend and enjoy lunch or dinner at one of the many restaurants or tearooms. For more information, visit www.mullicahill.com or call 856-881-6800.

Hope, Pa. Additional auction highlights included an eclectic collection of bronzes, Orientalia, and religious items from the estate of Dr. John Dunlop of Stroudsburg Pa. An unusual find, a sterling silver monstrance originating from the Hagia Sophia in Turkey, realized $5,850. Also from this collection, a fine group of vermeil and enamel boxes garnered a lot of attention and bidding. They brought $1,440 and $1,920. Dr. Dunlop’s mixed-use property located in Historic Stroudsburg will be sold at

Other standouts from the day were the Lyon & Healy harp with original case that sold for $7,995 and a Jedidiah Weiss, Bethlehem, Pa., tall case clock, which sold for $8,775, one of the most viewed lots of the sale. Attracting a lot of interest online and from the floor was the work of contemporary Bucks Co. artist Andrew Woehrel. The work titled “Lumberville,” a winter landscape with sleigh, garnered a record price of $4,095. Another highlight was a framed KPM porcelain plaque depicting a sailor on a shipwreck kissing a nude female, which sold for $4,973. Alderfer’s next Fine & Decorative Arts auction is scheduled for Thursday, June 12, and will feature fine paintings from Fern Coppedge, George Sotter, William Langston Lathrop, Mary Elizabeth Price, and Walter Baum, as well as a sound sculpture by Harry Bertoia and a Nakashima writing chair. After spending the last two decades in the bottom of a closet in a Bucks County, Pa., home, a fine Chinese White Jade incense burner was brought to auction. A wedding present to the consignor’s parents in the 1930s, the beautifully carved piece of white jade went unnoticed for 20 years until they decided to have it appraised. Excitement mounted as a frenzied bidding war began between the phones, Internet, and live audience. After much excitement, a final price of $48,000 was realized. That was one of hundreds of pieces that comprised the March 20th Fine & Decorative Arts auction that received the attention of buyers from 37 countries at Alderfer’s Auction, located in Hatfield, Pa. The estate of Clarence Bodine, Jr. of New Hope, Pa., contributed many of the Asian arts for the sale, including netsuke, snuff bottles, and porcelains. One grouping of netsuke sold for $1,404, a collection of Chinese carved seals brought $5,265, three blue and white porcelain snuff bottles sold for $995, a pair of Chinese goldfish bottle vases realized $4,680, and a framed hand-painted porcelain plaque sold for $1,560. Action Figure Authority (or AFA for short) is the premier third party grading company for toys and action figures. While collectors were cautious to accept a grading service devoted to toy collecting when the service first premiered, its popularity grew as the value of vintage toys and the rise of fraud increased with the continued success of Internet auctions. As such, there are a lot of collectors who will not buy a vintage toy or action figure on the Internet unless it is graded by

In October of 2012 the science fiction world was turned upside down when it was announced that George Lucas would be selling the coveted Star Wars franchise to the Walt Disney Company. Mickey Mouse and friends would assume all rights to the franchise for an estimated cost of $4 billion dollars. The announcement generated even more excitement than that of Disney buying the beloved Marvel Comics franchise back in 2009. Hardcore Star Wars enthusiasts were split on the news, as some were now happy that Disney owned the rights to the series since a lot of fans criticized George Lucas for failing to announce any new theatrical material in almost a decade. As soon as the deal was signed Disney quickly announced plans to release the next three movies in the ongoing space saga. The first of these new films will be released in 2015 and will be a direct sequel to 1983’s “Return of the Jedi. While details of the next film in the

series are being kept under extremely tight wraps, the collecting market is taking notice. The prices of quality vintage Star Wars toys and action figures from the original trilogy of films are steadily rising. Thanks in part to the popularity of toy collecting and reality-based collecting shows like “Toy Hunter, vintage Star Wars toys remain some of the most popular toy lines ever to hit the collector’s market. Some of the most coveted toys are generally still factory-sealed or new in their original package. Much like coins, currency, and comic books, toy collectors also have a third party

mail-away exclusive before being released into retail stores. Unfortunately, the rocket firing projectile was never approved for production due to safety concerns. It is available in pre-production prototype form only and is known solely as the rocket firing Boba Fett to most collectors. The figure was in preproduction stages when canceled and quite a few exist in this form. As such, it is best to only purchase certified, welldocumented examples, as a near mint condition fully complete figure has been seen selling for close to $20,000 on the secondary market and many collectors think the price is set to rise sharply as soon as the new movies are released. This is a “holy grail piece that any collector would love to own. While it can be said that “The Force has truly been with avid collectors of vintage Star Wars toys over the past few decades, novice collectors should enter this market well informed and cautious. There are many documented reproductions and

play set. This figure was supposed to be red and small, much like the character that appears briefly in the original Star Wars movie, but due to the fact that Kenner Toys only had a black-and-white headshot of the figure to go by when it was produced, they ended up producing the figure as a full-sized alien in a bluecolored jumpsuit. Lucas Film asked them to pull the figure and a new correctly sized red figure was made instead. Contrary to popular belief, the Blue Snaggletooth figure did see a relative high production run when compared to other rarities in the vintage Star Wars line. Still a Blue Snaggletooth figure with original blaster in mint condition certified by AFA can be worth close to $500 or more. Due to its unique history, it is highly sought after by collectors. Ironically one of the most popular characters in the entire Star Wars universe received less than three minutes of screen time in the first three movies combined! Boba Fett was promised to be available as a rocket firing

cherished Star Wars toys remains etched in the hearts and minds of not only toy collectors, but Star Wars enthusiasts alike. Kenner Toys released the first wave of vintage Star Wars figures in 1978 amidst growing enthusiasm. The first twelve figures released are commonly referred to as “twelve backs because they show the original twelve handpainted figures on the back of their packaging. These figures included the following popular characters direct from the first Star Wars movie: C-3PO, Chewbacca, Darth Vader, Death Squad Commander, Han Solo, Jawa, Luke Skywalker, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Princess Leia Organa, R2-D2, Sand People, and Stormtrooper. In original factory-sealed condition these are highly coveted by collectors and can command thousands of dollars each on the secondary market. Aside from the factorysealed twelve back figures, there are several highly collectible oddities and exclusives that every collector of vintage Star Wars toys should watch out for. If you happen to find any of the double telescoping light saber action figures, which include Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader, and Obi-Wan Kenobi, don’t hesitate to buy them. These figures are quite rare and extremely valuable even if they are not sealed in their original package. Loose action figures can also be

authenticated and graded by AFA, giving both collectors and investors of these vintage items assured confidence as to what they are getting. These double scoping figures featured an additional piece of plastic that extended from the tip of the light saber contained in the arm of each action figure. These figures were pulled off the market and replaced with non-telescoping versions very early on, most likely due to safety concerns. As such it can be somewhat difficult for a novice collector to tell the difference between a typical figure and its far scarcer version. Another popular and hard to find vintage figure that can be found in both carded (i.e. factory-sealed) and loose versions is the popular vinyl cape Jawa. This figure was part of the original twelve figures to be released when Star Wars first appeared in 1978. The figure features a vinyl cape, but was quickly changed to a cloth cape after Kenner Toys feared complaints from consumers that the small size of the figure did not merit the same cost of the other figures in the line. As a result Kenner felt that the vinyl cape made the figure look too cheap, so it was quickly changed to a much more realistic cloth cape going forward. Loose certified examples of a vinyl cape Jawa in near mint condition can sell for close to $1,000 each, while carded examples can sell for upwards of $5,000 or more. One of the most infamous well-known exclusive figures has got to be the Blue Snaggletooth figure produced in part with the Sears retail Exclusive Cantina Adventure

Celebrate National Auctioneers Month At The National Toy Train Museum In Strasburg, Pa., On April 27 The third Saturday in April marks a special day in the lives of all auctioneers, “National Auctioneers Day. This special day is recognized by auctioneers, near and far, as a day to reflect back on one of history’s oldest professions and to celebrate the industry’s future. Online or on the lawn, auctions continue to grow in popularity with consumers. Bidders enjoy the thrill of competition and the rush that comes with the chase for

treasures. Auctions are one of the most effective and efficient means of turning assets into cash quickly. Most importantly, consumers regularly come back to auctions because they are fun and entertaining. The Southeast Chapter of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association plans to celebrate National Auctioneers Day with its “auction lovers approximately one week later on Sunday, April 27, at the

National Toy Train Museum in Strasburg, Pa., located at 300 Paradise Lane. The event will run from 1 to 4 p.m. The museum houses what is believed to be the largest publicly exhibited toy and model train collection in the country. For more information about the upcoming event at the museum, visit www.nttmuseum.org. To learn more about the PAA, visit www.paauctioneers.org.

Even factory-sealed figures exist as reproductions so novice enthusiasts should not get too excited when finding a stash of vintage Star Wars figures. If the price is too good to be true, most likely so is the find. If buying for investment purposes, it is also best to avoid any kinds of figures or toys made after the 1990s. Most of these figures were widely hoarded and saved by speculators and are readily available on the secondary market for far less than what they originally sold for. While very few speculators and
