Your looks are laughable, Unphotographable, Yet you’re my favorite work of art. -Richard Rogers & Lorenz HartDear Readers, The quote above is a stanza from a 1930s song by Rogers & Hart, “My Funny Valentine.” Whenever I hear it, I think of Raggedy Ann dolls. Perhaps because at one time the dolls had candy hearts stuffed inside their cottony chests or perhaps because later, they had the words “I Love You” printed onto their chests…the words framed with a heart. This month’s issue of Antique DOLL Collector is our Valentine to you, our readers. Susan Popp brings us the story of Gertrude Rollinson from Holyoke, Massachusetts, an inventive, talented dollmaker during the early twentieth century. Melanie Luther shares a beautiful array of bisque Dolly Face dolls made in Sonneberg, Germany. Rebekah Kaufman introduces us to Trude, a special addition to her Steiff collection. And Elizabeth Hamilton invites us to step inside The Oaks, her circa 1850s English Victorian dollhouse. We continue our tribute to America’s dollmakers spotlighting Izannah Walker, and this month Samy Odin expands his column to tell the tale of Mademoiselle, the Child Paper Doll for Psyché Magazine. We also offer a recap of the magical Eastern National Doll Show held in Gaithersburg in December, a much-anticipated yearly holiday-timed event.
