Smiling dolly with the eyes of blue, Was it lovely where they fashioned you, Were there laughing gnomes, and did the breeze Toss the snow along the Christmas trees? (“A Christmas Doll” by Margaret Widdemer, 1914) Dear Readers, While searching for a holiday-themed quote or poem to open our December issue of Antique DOLL Collector, I came across a poem I had not seen before. Written in 1914, the poem centers around the use of children in dollmaking at that time, especially children living in tenement homes where they sewed on buttons and performed other tasks suitable to their nimble fingers. The poem immediately brought to mind a 1912 photograph

by Lewis Hine of children making clothes for Horsman Campbell Kid dolls in their New York tenement (*Exposing Child Labor: The Photography of Lewis Hine - ABA Journal). I’ve shared only two verses here, but the poem in its entirety is easily found by searching for it on the internet (*A Christmas Doll by Margaret Widdemer - Poems | Academy of American Poets).

Our cover this month honors Effanbee’s Patsy family with an article by Jane Foster.

Elizabeth Ann Coleman shares Part 2 of her impressive research on eighteenth-century English woodens dressed by the Cree people of Canada, and Rhoda Seidenberg offers the story behind the artistic Saroff dolls.

Paper Doll Stories by Samy Odin

Dolly Dingle Celebrates Christmas

A

column devoted to paper doll collecting cannot possibly ignore the amazing artwork of Grace Drayton. Among her iconic paper doll characters, Dolly Dingle is unique and deeply reflects the American society of the first decades of the twentieth century. Appearing in the pages of Pictorial Review, Dolly Dingle had a roaring success as soon as 1913 and her popularity lasted over two decades through the pages of the same magazine.

Already well known since 1903 for Toodles, a comic strip heroine, and since 1904 for her Campbell Kids, Grace Drayton designed Dolly Dingle following the same aesthetics. This hilarious and petulant character with chunky yet graceful proportions, flaming red cheeks and irresistible smile stole the hearts of Americans.

Her success was so immediate and authentic that the publishers soon devoted the December central double page of Pictorial Review to her. Of course, most of the artwork reserved for this special issue was mirroring Christmas traditions.

I had to make a selection of these Christmas-related paper dolls, for my father was a passionate Dolly Dingle addict and assembled a very extensive collection on this topic. The funny details and playful atmosphere that Grace Drayton created with her artwork is truly amazing. In this double page published in the issue dated December 1916, “Dolly Dingle’s Christmas Party” the two major characters, Dolly Dingle and Billy Bumps, are surrounded by a myriad of toys and Christmas decorations to cut out and use to embellish the tree.

Each character wears two costumes while the third character, generically described as Baby, shows off a party dress with no extra outfit. Even Dolly Dingle’s lady doll has a second outfit and a few accessories designed for her.

We can easily imagine how much fun children of that era had while cutting out and playing with these paper dolls. Their content perfectly reflects the playthings expected by middle class children of that generation.

(Photo 1) “Dolly Dingle Back Home Again for a Good American Christmas” is a double paper doll page published in the December 1917 issue. It follows a series called “Dolly Dingle Around the World” published in several issues of that same year. Here Dolly is pictured with Santa Claus and the Christmas tree together with three outfits and her presents, including Lady Alice, her latest doll spoiled with four outfits and a bed, as well as a wax baby doll

and his cradle, a plush puppy dog and a stocking filled by Santa with many more playthings. (Photo 2) In December 1918 World War I was still starting, so Dolly’s traditional

Christmas double paper doll page features accessories to decorate the festive table on the theme “Dolly Dingle Celebrates her Christmas in True War-Time Style.” Again, Grace Drayton

offers a series of ideas that, in spite of the worrisome circumstance, brings a joyful atmosphere to the celebration.

(Photo 3) The early 1920s, in spite of the willingness to get over the war atmosphere, were still hard on the lower classes. The traditional Christmas Dolly Dingle double page was moved from December 1920 to January 1921 and focused on generosity toward the poor—”Dolly Dingle has a Party for Poor Little Polly.”

Interestingly, Dolly is mentioned but not represented, in order to focus the attention on Polly, her presents and the Christmas Fairy that brings hope into this delicate circumstance. (Photo 4) The following Christmas double page for Dolly Dingle, dated December 1921, features Dolly and her friends Tommy, Bessie and Sammy, who send Christmas greetings to their friends. This colorful page pops up by the massive use of the red color, each character wears two outfits, one

coat and matching hat and one interior piece of apparel, together with some charming Christmas greeting cards.

(Photo 5) In December 1922, Grace Drayton focused on Dolly’s toys and pets,

combined with more Christmas greetings. It is very plausible that while playing with paper dolls, the young readers of the magazine cut out Grace Drayton’s greeting cards to be used as such. (Photo 6)

By December 1923, Dolly Dingle was possibly fading away, so the traditional double page was reduced to a single page representing a new character, Peggy Ann, Dolly’s cousin, artfully drawn surrounded by four outfits, some playthings and a pet. The very same page was republished a few years later, in January 1932, when Grace Drayton’s contributions to Pictorial Review were already minimal and the quality of the printing much poorer than in the past. The Great Depression was, in fact, a serious factor during those years. (Photo 7) In December 1924 a single page is devoted to Dolly Dingle herself, surrounded by three outfits in the style of the Roaring Twenties and “Just a Few of Dolly Dingle’s Christmas Presents.” Dolly’s popularity, at that time was still strong and the magazine was reaching its best years, but the 1929 crisis was only a few years away. (Photo 8) The December 1929 “Dolly Dingle’s Christmas” single page contrasts by its minimalism with prior exuberant paper doll creations by Grace Drayton. Here, the ephemeral “Jane” character appears with two simple outfits, declining the traditional red and green seasonal colors, surrounded by a meager Christmas stocking, a cheap tumble toy, a tiny Christmas tree and a simple Santa portrait plus greeting card. Oh well, somber times are just around the corner.

PATSY DOLLS— PRETTY AND POSABLE

by Jane Foster Photography by Gerald Foster unless otherwise noted. atsy had a charming predecessor—a doll named Just Me. Both were sculpted by Bernard Lipfert and portrayed sweet little girls. In Germany, Lipfert worked with several doll companies, including the Armand Marseille factory, which had strong ties to George Borgfeldt & Company. Borgfeldt registered the copyright for Just Me in 1928 and did extensive business with Marseille’s porcelain and doll factory. After immigrating to the United States in 1912, Lipfert went on to create the beloved Patsy dolls for Effanbee.

Patsy and Just Me certainly shared some of the same features—all were reminiscent of the Lipfert style.

According to Robert Tonner, “these characteristics would include the tiny rosebud mouth, wide set eyes, upturned nose, the short neck, and the bent right arm.” Due to her bent right arm many times Patsy is displayed or found in books holding a stuffed animal or another smaller doll, perhaps one from the Patsy family. These two Just Me dolls have the same marking on the back of their heads as the 9½-inch doll. They are 10-inches and 8-inches tall. The smallest doll is attired in an original outfit.

dolls differ is in their height and proportions. The Just Me dolls measure from 7½ to10-inches. There are some examples that measure 13-inches in height.

Effanbee presented their 14-inch Patsy in 1928 and by the 1930s she was being so well-received an entire family of composition Patsy dolls followed, all sculpted

by Bernard Lipfert in varying sizes from 6-inches to 30-inches. There was also a composition Patsy by Effanbee made in 1946 with blue eyes. The earlier Patsy dolls had darker eyes. Patsy Ann was 19-inches tall and appeared on the market in 1929. She was known as big sister to Patsy. Patsy Ann seems to be the most often found Patsy family doll on the market currently for collectors to select. One would surmise that there could have been more Patsy Anns made than any of her other siblings. Another sister was Patsy Lou, who was 22-inches tall and made in the early 1930s. She was one of the loveliest of the Patsy family dolls and was attired in some very pretty ensembles.

There are several things to convey about Patsy Joan.

She was a 17-inch doll in this line introduced in 1932.

Patsy Joan was the only Patsy doll that was marked Effandbee (with the “d” added) on the torso only. She was reissued in 1946, still made of composition, but with a slightly different molded hair style than the 1930s Patsy Joan. This reissued 1946 Patsy Joan had real hair upper eyelashes and painted lower eyelashes. Three of her outfits included a pink party dress, a multi-colored play dress and a red and white striped party outfit. A musical Patsy Joan was advertised in 1940. This doll had the Patsy Joan head and the type of arms and legs used in an allcomposition elastic-strung doll that could be adapted to fit a cloth torso. Henceforth a music box could be inserted into the torso. She was 17½-inches tall and advertised as playing a merry tune, or some descriptions denoted that when you wound her up, she would play Happy Birthday.

Effanbee also made both smaller and taller Patsy dolls. The smaller dolls included Patsykins (11-inches), Patsyette (9½ -inches), Wee Patsy (5½-inches), Patsy Baby (12-inches), Patsy Babyette (8-inches), Baby Tinyette (6-inches), and Wee Patsy 5½-inches. Patsy Baby was advertised and sold as Patsy Babykin, but she was marked Patsy Baby. Effanbee Doll Company was quite

competitive. When Madame Alexander Doll Company gained the rights to produce replicas of the Dionne Quintuplets, Effanbee made their own set of quintuplets using the Tinyette dolls.

Fine fabrics such as silk and organdy were used to attire these larger Patsy family members. Patsy Mae and Patsy Ruth were expensive. Surprisingly there was a continuing demand by some more affluent buyers for these choice dolls. Though this was the era of the Great Depression Effanbee was producing some of the highest quality and most sought-after composition dolls ever made.

There were children’s books written about the Effanbee Patsy dolls, and paper dolls were created as well as greeting cards. Clothing patterns made especially for Patsy dolls were offered. Even Patsy postcards were available. Effanbee employed various ladies to play Aunt Patsy. Aunt Patsy would visit department stores and meet with groups of little girls. The programs she presented were interesting to the children, and the children could be actively involved. Parents liked her gatherings because Aunt Patsy emphasized such qualities as good manners and safety. Of course, information would be given about the latest in Effanbee’s line of Patsy dolls. In conjunction there was a Patsy Doll Club which the children could join.

Patsy dolls have a special place in many doll collections to this day. Patsy Moyer was a Patsy doll enthusiast who collected many original Patsy dolls and has authored various doll reference books and one series of newsletters titled Patsy and Friends. She was the editor and publisher of the newsletters and subscribers looked forward to each issue. This publication started in the 1980s and continued for about two and a half decades. It featured many different Patsy dolls in different settings and included numerous other dolls from the same era.

Patsy Moyer recently commented, “My favorite thing was doing the Patsy and Friends newsletters as it was great to interact with so many Patsy collectors who had such interesting stories to share.” If you ever have an opportunity to purchase one or more of these newsletters, you will find them brimming with Patsy memorabilia and doll history.

The Patsy Mae pictured here is a large mama doll with original clothing, and carries on one wrist her Effanbee metal heart bracelet and also has her gold paper heart tag.

One of the other big girls in the Patsy family is all composition and was often sold as Patricia Ruth.

She is sometimes referred to as Patsy Ruth because her head is marked the same as the clothbodied Patsy Ruth. This example is dressed in an original taffeta dress with floweret trims. She wears original T-strap shoes.

Patsy was so marketable many other doll companies jumped on the bandwagon and produced dolls that resembled her. Some of these look-alikes were Mitzi by Maxine Doll Company, Peaches by Averill, and Sally by American Character, as well as others. Unknown to many doll collectors Horsman Doll Company produced four different sizes of Patsy-type dolls that were introduced in 1931. A 20-inch doll comparable to Effanbee’s Patsy Ann was named Nan. Jane was a 17-inch doll which was Patsy Joan’s height. A 14-inch doll named Sue was comparable to the first introduced Patsy doll. There was also a black version of Sue. The smallest Horsman look-a-like was named Babs, which stood 11½-inches tall, and was their match to Patsy Jr. Horsman’s look-a-like dolls were not marked on their bodies, but they do have identifiable characteristics. They had the rosebud mouth like Effanbee’s Patsy, similar facial features, and the bent 26

right arm. Their distinguishing features include slight differences in their molded hair and a faint dimple in their chin. Some of the Horsman look-a-likes wore tagged dresses. Similar to Effanbee’s Patsy dolls, Horsman’s look-a-like dolls were well made and costumed nicely.

It is interesting to note that the first Patsy doll, which Effanbee premiered on Valentine’s Day in 1928, will be categorized as an antique doll in 2028 when she turns 100 years old.

s detailed before, the adult female doll matches in construction her male companion: head and torso of English creation and limbs of Cree crafting. She sports her version of a traditional Eastern Cree pointed hood made from a folded-in-half narrow piece of red trade wool—stroud— which is of a lighter weight than usual hood fabric.24 The piece is stitched along one side and comes down the back nearly to the waistline. In front it forms a triangle, a favorite Cree motif. In this doll’s case the woven bands of a Hudson’s Bay Company blanket have been replicated with commercial silk ribbons in green and white. The hood is finished with a printed cotton lining which was designed to discourage hair grease from soiling the hood fabric. The hood was worn over two bunches of beaded hair wraps (fillets). The hair extended to mid back while the beaded fringe is waist length.

In likeness of Cree women, the doll is wrapped in a fold over version of a Hudson’s Bay point blanket, again featuring silk ribbon appliqués of gold and dark green but with the decorative ribbon in a ladder-like configuration rather than the straight bars of the woven blankets. Underneath the folded over blanket26 is a red wool stroud trade cloth side-fold27 dress-like garment trimmed with decorative silk ribbons replicating the stripes of a Hudson’s Bay blanket and finished with a beaded fringe ending in raveled tassels. The patterns could also reference the pigment decorations found on surviving side-folded hide human “dresses.” The blanket is secured across the upper chest with 26. Both could be worn folded over at the neckline to create extra warmth for the upper part of the body.

two decorative metal buttons28 in front held by a bowed hide thong. The sleeves are detachable and secured with hide thongs which appear at the neckline. Both the hood and dress are finished with glass bead fringes ending with raveled wool yarn tassels and pigmented quills. The chest area features a decorative bib- or yoke-like covering (taapiskaakan), featuring rounded corners and elaborate bead work while at her waist there is a bead and yarn fringed woven quill belt.29 On her legs we find leggings similar to the male—up to the thigh—with cotton thread garters at knee level, and beading and tape trim at ankle level. Her footwear is a step down, red stroud cloth acting much like an eighteenth-century man’s or woman’s shoe tongue. It is worn under the upper layer of moccasin and is tied with twine around her ankles. The only extensive use of hide is to be found on her suede moccasins, where green silk tape binds the vamp to the upper. No undergarments are evident.

Now we come to the larger than needed30 doll in the cradleboard (tikanagan). Interestingly it, like similar

cradleboards,31 is of a larger scale, indicating it was not designed to be placed on a “mother” doll’s back.

Incidentally, it is missing the carrying handle bar above and across the “baby’s” head. In configuration and color, it replicated the full-size board drawn by James Isham at York Factory32 as early as the 1740s.33 Sadly, in this case the doll—7 inches tall—is no longer an original, indeed if there was ever one. Miniature cradleboards may have been meant to stand by themselves as an object of curiosity, or just as likely they could have been occupied by a doll representing a baby. It is known the present doll is a replacement by a previous owner34 and based on comparison with another example sold at Christie’s, South Kensington35, whose baby is easily relatable time wise to other known Cree “mother” dolls being a late “Queen Anne”-type of turned wood and painted eyes.

The previous “baby” was a later nineteenth century waxover-composition doll on a jointed body. It may, with its headband, have been dressed to represent a generic Native American Indian.

So, what type of doll presently “lives” in the cradleboard? Certainly not a baby. Rather a smaller, cheaper version of the adult dolls, an English turned wooden head and torso doll with all cloth arms and unknown material legs, and with painted features and a bald head. My Lady is dressed in a white cotton cap, gold glass bead necklace, a blue silk ribbon neck piece secured by a common straight pin with a single gold bead over a white lace fichu and a white silk gown with a contrasting petticoat, and a sheer white cotton long apron. Her attire suggests being original to the doll and is reflective of an English middle class “parson’s wife” of the late eighteenth century.

The back of the cradleboard and the bar were at one time36 covered in red stroud matching that on the front. The bead and tasseled fringe on the cradleboard echoes that on the adult dolls’ apparel.

The two major dolls are part of a larger cluster of similar dolls in every respect, both doll type and apparel delineation. The presently known group includes this seemingly unique man37 and his female counterpart, three other related adult females and two related cradleboards one with a properly sized doll.38 Three dolls and two cradleboards, one with a replaced doll, are known in American collections: Marion Maus-Greer (three Cree pieces) and John and Marva Warnock (one adult and one infant in a cradleboard). The Warnock dolls can be traced back to a 1989 Christie’s South Kensington sale while the Maus-Greer doll has changed hands on several occasions in the United States. The other two female dolls presently reside in the collection of the little known but fascinating Southwark Heritage Center in London on the Thames’ south shore where museum staff has begun to piece together at least a portion of the background of these dolls. And the backstory assembled by the Southwark’s predecessor, the Cuming Museum, is as fascinating as the dolls themselves.

But first a little more about collecting habits around the time these dolls were created in the late years of the eighteenth century. For the most part at that time collecting was a private experience, with collectors displaying their finds, often hordes, in what were recognized as cabinets of curiosity. Indeed, most of their items would be objects unfamiliar to visitors and often coming from distant parts of the world. At the time these dolls were made the British, with their ever-growing investigations and control of faraway parts of the planet, began to open public facilities called museums which were basically extensions of the cabinets of curiosity but for the masses. One of the earliest of these museums was central London’s competitor to the British Museum, the Leverian Museum where, as late as 1806, the Southwark dolls were on display. Closing in 1806 the contents of the Leverian Museum went to public auction, where in lot 3645, “Two small figures dressed in the costume of N. American Indians” were sold to a Mr. Atkinson for the then considerable sum of eighteen shillings. According to present day researchers at the successor of the Cuming Museum they then appear at the 1821 auction of London’s Bullock’s Museum, only to reappear in an auction in 1842 when they are

acquired by Richard and Henry Cuming. At this point the dolls were identified as “Ojibbeway.” Richard Cuming (1777-1870) working with other members of his family built up a latter-day cabinet of curiosities in his home which on his death39 passed to his son, Henry Syer Cuming, who in turn gave the collection to the Borough of Southwark, (London) in 1902. The local Council invested in a purposebuilt building which was named in honor of the Cuming family: The Cuming Museum. Apparently in 1976 these two dolls were transferred to another London museum, the Horniman Museum, where they were documented as being on permanent loan in 1989. In 2006 the collection was moved again to a structure that in 2013 would suffer a devastating fire which largely left the Cuming materials unscathed, including the priceless 1806 auction tags associating these two dolls with the Leverian collection.

Just as amazing and rare as the dolls is this segment of their provenance: the dolls would now head back to a new facility in Southwark, the Southwark Heritage Center.

Before looking at the possible beginning chapter of these dolls it behooves us to again look at the remarkable attire of the two Leverian/Cuming/Southwark ladies. (Illus. 34) The one without a peaked hood and fold-over blanket boasts one of the basic tress types of dress associated with Cree women, a side-fold dress meaning her dress is of a one-piece animal

hide basically folded vertically in half and sewn up on one side forming a tube. It is suspended from the shoulders with sewn on straps, one for each shoulder. Like the Maus-Greer doll she has her hair dressed in two very decorative bead wraps (fillets), and sleeves that are tied on, detachable units.

Across her chest and around her waist she displays a beaded yoke and a three quarters around tie in the back belt. Her moccasins appear to be similar to those of the other females.

The bead and pigment decoration matches in style and composition that of the other female dolls. What she may be missing is her hood and fold over blanket, but then again, she may represent dress in a warmer time of year. With (Illus. 34)40, the other doll is similarly dressed, but for cooler days, and features a trade goods woolen hood with bead and appliqué work similar to that found on the Maus-Greer example. She boasts a pigment and quill decorated fold over blanket, a lavishly beaded fold-over yoke, tie on separate sleeves, and a deep quill decorated belt with long bead, quill, and raveled wool fringe. Her pigment decorated, hide material fringed leggings are worn above hide moccasins.

The Warnock woman appears to have been dressed in a similar fashion, with lots of trade goods, to the MausGreer example except she features very necessary, indeed potentially lifesaving artifacts: a pair of hide decorated mittens. To protect them from loss they are attached by a

bead lanyard. The rest of her attire appears to be a variant of the MausGreer doll.

Now we come back to adding up all the clues these adult dolls offer as to their probable age and here again is an intriguing reveal. As we have seen, these dolls are not completely unique, just very rare. We will probably never know the number of these dolls originally made but it appears that initially several found homes in the forerunners of modern museums. Thanks not to doll collectors, but to contemporary Native American/First Nation ethologists, especially those with an interest in tribal apparel, fascinating clues to the backgrounds of these dolls have been revealed.

There is one scholar who I have not yet introduced: an Austrian ethnologist, Christian Feest, who in his report41 for Canadian/American gallery owner, Donald Ellis, offers highly plausible information how, why, and when these dolls might have come about. In his report Feest introduces us to some of the early British collectors of ethnographic materials from Subarctic Canada. Geographically logical, many were from Scotland and associated with the Hudson’s Bay Company. The export of indigenous goods, beyond pelts, to Scotland seems to have begun seriously about 1774 with the notable collections of trader Andrew Graham of the Hudson’s Bay Company. Sensing a wider interest Graham began dispersing his collection in 1787. Many of these artifacts, and others from other similar collections, would shortly make their way to London, and other parts of the United Kingdom, and end up in collections like the Leverian and Bullock museums. These dolls, probably specially commissioned by someone like Graham, as revealed by their mixed cultural backgrounds—English doll and Indigenous Cree apparel—reveal the British interest in learning the ways of other members of their rapidly growing empire. Today, because of the curiosity of one group of humans about another we benefit from their forethoughts. As always dolls have been seen as objects encouraging learning, whether for the young or more mature. Nearly two hundred and fifty years on and these dolls are still exciting imaginations and offer proof of existence of things otherwise lost in time and to degradation. The hope is that these surprisingly sturdy miniature teachers will survive more centuries to come in their nearly untouched form. After all they are Rosetta stones of historical Cree Indian apparel.

The Secret Behind the Saroff Dolls

aroff dolls represent a unique blend of artistry, cultural documentation, and storytelling in the realm of dolls. This article will explore the man behind the theatrical and historical Saroff dolls.

Pernell Joseph Peek was born to James and Mary Peek in North Manchester, Indiana, on June 16, 1888. As the fourth of five children, Peek’s upbringing was shaped by his family’s move to Springfield, Missouri, in 1901. Although his name was Pernell, he preferred to be called Joe. He demonstrated a passion for the performing arts early in life, participating in walk-on roles at the Old Diener Theater and joining the Pink Lady Theater by 1914. His military service in World War I saw him enlist as an entertainment soldier, writing and

performing in plays and revues for the troupe—a precursor to today’s USO. Following the war, Peek traveled throughout Europe, performing in plays and vaudeville while absorbing diverse methods of theatrical and artistic expression.

Upon his return to Springfield in 1918, Peek adopted the pseudonym Andreev Saroff, believing a continental persona would enhance the appeal of his performance company. He established the Saroff Costume Company which produced costumes and sets for local and national theatres. His company employed fourteen artists, and he opened The Little Theater in 1924 in Springfield with his theatrical productions. Although talented on stage, Peek identified his true strength in conceptualization and design.

Joe’s early career centered on marionette and puppet creation for local venues, with notable performances such as The Blue Bird at Jarrett Junior High School (1927). The Bluebird of Happiness was written by Belgian playwright Maurice Maeterlinck.

Peek’s marionettes featured papier-mâché heads, wire armatures, and detailed costumes, most likely dressed

like the images from the Broadway play. The marionette shows were popular with children and adults. An article in the Springfield Leader and Press announced a Saroff Marionette performance at the Clara Thompson Hall at Drury College for the benefit of the restoration of the rose windows at St. John’s Episcopal Church. The article states, “… Saroff’s marionettes…made tentative booking arrangements with the Becker booking agency of New York City to go on the road.” The shows featured dramatic sketches, music, and dances with a chorus of puppets.

In between the puppet shows, Peek mentored Jackson Robinson, a young Black actor, for Eugene O’Neill’s Emperor Jones at the Cove Hollow Bowl. Peek designed and directed the entire production. Missouri was segregated like many states in the South and the Midwest. Peek’s involvement with this play shows how progressive he was in the era of Jim Crow.

The marionettes were said to look like the Ziegfeld Follies and Peek’s puppets were based on sophisticated stories like the tales of Aladdin and Bluebeard. His creations included dancing clowns and harem girls, as well. Eventually the economic challenges of the Great Depression prompted Peek to shift focus from marionette shows to dolls. He sold his costume company and founded Saroff Studios, relocating to High Ridge, Missouri, to concentrate on doll making.

Before ending his marionette work, Peek developed a strong admiration for Russian ballet, especially the works of Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes. This influence is evident in his early dolls, which depicted celebrated dancers and characters from performances such as Anna Pavlova in The Dying Swan and Petrushka from Stravinsky’s ballet.

Peek’s expertise extended to the creation of dolls inspired by classic literature and folklore. These included figures from the Bible, pirates, Middle Eastern princes, and characters from tales such as Bluebeard, Mother Goose, and Little Bo Peep. Each doll showcased Peek’s meticulous craftsmanship, theatrical flair, and attention to costume detail.

In addition to the ballet and literature themed dolls, Peek created historical dolls and ethnic dolls. In 1940, his work was featured at the first American Dolls Show in New York, and Macy’s commissioned a dozen of his dolls. Each piece was constructed with papier-mâché over wire armature and carefully painted faces, reflecting unique racial and cultural attributes.

Peek utilized Ruth Turner Wilcox’s The Mode in Costume to guide his recreation of European historical attire. Notable examples include his Italian Renaissance and French Restoration dolls, described with precision down to the materials and accessories used.

National Geographic magazine revealed the world to Americans and played a significant role in shaping the design of Saroff dolls. Peek drew inspiration from its photographic documentation of global cultures featuring European dance and folk costumes. He used good quality textiles to design his European dolls and used light or white paint for the complexions and bright paint for the expressive eyes.

Saroff dolls included respectful representations of African tribes influenced by the imagery in National Geographic. Peek’s Uganda Plate-lipped Woman, for example, avoided stereotypes and accurately portrayed cultural practices. His African dolls often depicted warriors and dancers, using realistic painting and accessories.

In 1954 Peek moved to High Ridge, Missouri and embarked on a mail-order platform to sell his dolls. He rented a oneroom cabin with electricity but no running water. Living like a hermit, he began concentrating on making dolls representing Native Americans. Peek’s dedication to these portrait dolls was inspired by George Catlin’s Indian paintings. Peek also incorporated respect and love into his Indian dolls. Using Catlin as his guide, he made several Native American dolls that gained the attention of Chief White Cloud and Chief Black Bear of the Shawnee nation. They wanted to have a collection of all the Saroff Shawnee dolls. In 1960, the Shawnee made Peek an honorary tribe member, calling him Gay-Naiow-piah-sika, which means “man with many friends.”

In addition to his mail-order business, Saroff dolls were sold in department stores for $12.00. He would come to the exhibitions explaining the characters and their clothing. In 1961 his dolls were displayed at the St. Louis Public Library.

Joe Peek stopped making dolls in the late 1960s. He was still involved in the arts and lived in his cabin until the land was sold to build a Kroger Supermarket. He moved to the Old Soldier’s Home in St. James, Missouri, where he died in 1971. The old Kroger is now the home to the Northwest Jefferson County Library.

Joseph Pernell Peek left behind a legacy of dolls and figures that continue to fascinate the imagination. His historical and ethnic dolls offer teaching tools to doll collectors and to anyone interested in global history.

Saroff dolls stand on a painted cardboard lid and are marked either: “This is an original SAROFF CREATION, authentically designed and made entirely by hand,” followed by the name of the character or with the marking “An original SAROFF CREATION, authentically designed and made entirely by hand,” followed by the character’s name.

Visions of Sugarplums A Christmas Pyjama Set for 9” Patsyette

O

n the night before Christmas, Patsyette hangs her stocking by the fire and waits anxiously for Santa to visit. It’s very hard to sleep! Mama made her a cozy new pyjama set, however, so at least she can wait in the latest style Standing just 9” tall, the all-composition Patsyette was first introduced by Effanbee in 1931 as a little sister to the Patsy doll. She has been reissued in other materials several times since her heyday, but she never fails to charm with her

chubby cheeks, bobbed hair and rosebud lips. No wonder the Patsy family remain such beloved dolls!

This project borrows its continental flair from Mademoiselle Bleuette, who was a well-established French style icon by the 1930s. Working with a palette of classic holiday reds and greens, Patsyette’s mama altered some wide-legged lounging pyjamas from La Semaine de Suzette issue #11, 1935, and a robe from #49, 1932. Now they perfectly suit our little American miss, too!

Materials

Less than ⅛ yd each of 3 coordinating cotton prints or solids Embroidery floss 4 buttons, 4-6 mm

Supplies

Matching thread, needles 3mm pinking shears Clear spray starch Frixion marking pen Notes 1. Each fabric is referred to with a code: A– pyjamas B–robe C–accent trim for both 2. “Oversized” prints can work to excellent effect on the robe.

3. Seams are ¼” unless otherwise stated. Most raw edges are treated simply with 3mm pinking shears, but you can finish them another way if desired. **Matching slippers and stocking patterns are available on Etsy at rosewrendolls.etsy.com and are FREE to members of the Facebook group “RoseWren’s Nest.” **

Folded neckline, trim sewn, and ready to turn to inside out.

Pyjamas

1. Cut bodices, yokes, and pants from Fabric A. cut pocket from Fabric C. 2. With pinking shears, cut bias strips from Fabric C: ½” x 13” ¾” x 8” ¾” x 9” 3. Fold bias strips in half, then press with starch and allow to dry. Cut the 13” strip into 3 pieces: 1- 6” and 2- 3 ½”. Press each of these into a curved shape.

4. Sew bodice shoulder seams; trim with pinking shears and press open. Lay the 6” curved bias strip on the bodice neckline, matching raw edges. Sew around neckline, ⅛” from the edge. Do the same around the armscyes.

5. Turn the bias strips to the inside, allowing fold to stand up along the edge. Press, then topstitch to hold the bias strips in place.

6. Sew bodice side seams; pink and press open. Sew a row of gathering stitches ⅛” from the lower edge along bodice front.

7. Turn raw edges of pocket ¼” to the inside all around.

Blindstitch or topstitch to the bodice front left. Make a small bow with embroidery floss and stitch to the neckline center front.

8. Sew yoke backs to front at side seams. Pink and press open. Lay the 8” bias along the top edge, matching raw edges. Baste to the yoke.

16. Fold garment with pant leg seams together, aligning front and back seams. Sew the leg seam in a continuous line, then pink and press seam open.

17. Hem legs with two ¼” turns to the inside. Fold legs in half and press a sharp crease down the center front and back.

18. Close the pyjamas with 3 buttons and loops.

Robe

Completed bodice, yoke, and pants with folded trim

1. Cut robe fronts, back, front/ neck facings, and sleeves from Fabric B, plus a 1” x 11” straight grain strip for the hem facing.

2. Cut collars from Fabric C, plus 2 straight grain pieces 1 ½” x 3 ⅜” for the cuffs. Prepare the collar by placing both pieces right sides together and sewing around the outside edge. Trim the seam, then turn and press the collar. Topstitch around the outside edge.

3. Sew robe shoulder seams, then trim with pinking shears and press open. Sew shoulder seams on facing, then pink and press. Trim outside edge of facing with pinking shears.

9. Pull up the bodice gathering thread to fit the yoke. Pin with right sides together, matching side seams, then sew. Pink the seam and press up toward the bodice.

10. Turn the center back edges ¼” twice to the wrong side and hem in place.

11. Baste remaining 9” bias strip to the lower edge of the yoke, making a tiny snip in the middle so it will turn at the point. Allow strip to hang over the back edges about ¼” at each end.

12. Trim the curved center back edges of the pants with pinking shears, then press ¼” to the wrong side, as far as the dot. Sew the center front seam between the two dots, then pink and press open, clipping curves as needed.

13. Open pants and pin to yoke, aligning raw edges, with center front seam at the point of the yoke. Match side seams and back edge folds. Sew, then pink and press seam facing down toward the pants, so the trim turns up toward the yoke. Topstitch across the pants, over the seam allowance. Turn the ends of the trim to the inside and hem in place.

14. Sew center back seam up to dot, then pink and press open, clipping curves as necessary.

15. Make small clips where the seams end–this is the top of the legs.

4. Layer collar wrong side on right side of robe.

Baste in place.

5. Layer front/neck facing on robe, with right sides together. Pin, then sew together up the front and around the neck. Trim seam, then turn the facing to the inside. Roll the seam slightly to the inside, so it doesn’t show on the robe front.

6. Topstitch the facing around the front and neck, lifting the collar out of the way when you reach that area. Press again with steam to help shape the neckline.

7. Stitch 2 rows of gathering threads at the top of the sleeve, ⅛” and ¼” from the raw edge. Press one long edge of the cuffs ¼” to the wrong side.

8. Sew cuff to sleeve, aligning raw edges. Trim seam, then turn cuff to the inside and hem the folded edge over the joining seam. Press.

9. Pull threads in the sleeve heading to help ease the sleeve into the armscye. It helps to pin the facing and collar out of the way as you work, and it can be easier to sew this step by hand as the garment is so small. After sewing in place, trim and overcast the seam. Press seam toward sleeve.

10. Pin robe with right sides together, then sew the underarm/ sleeve seams. Pink and press seam open, clipping at underarm as needed.

11. Pink one long edge of the hem facing, then sew to robe with right sides together, allowing extra fabric to hang over each end. Trim the seam, then press and roll to the inside as with the front facing. Trim away the excess fabric at each end.

Make a diagonal fold in the facing, then hem in place over the front facing and across the lower edge of the robe. Press.

12. Sew a button to the true left side of the robe and a loop to the right, just below the collar.

13. Make ⅜” long belt carriers on the side seams, as marked on the pattern. Use 2- 60” lengths of embroidery floss to make a twisted cord belt; you will find many tutorials on YouTube to make these . Tie a knot at each end, leaving a small tail of floss. Fluff this tail end to appear as a tassel.

Thread the belt through the belt carriers.
