'Iided simply 'The Do Fairy", lhe article told the bEckgmund history ot the Viennes€ balet of that name, in which the dolls of a richly-fiIed toy shop come vibrantly alive. Premieriry in Vienna in 1888, this ]osef Bayer ballet became one of the most su.cesstul balets in the history of dance. A pair of larSe but faded photographs that accompanied the dolls and tumishings when Dorothy purchased them over twenty years a8o showed a large ganbrel-roofed dollhouse mansion with extensive gardens and landscaping. Handwritten note\ on the back of the phoros indicated thal lhe pr€vious nameless owner had commissioned the dollhous€ a.cording to her own design, but Tynietoy collectors will immediately re€ognize the Colonial Mansion as it t as depicted in the earliest catalogues. The owner rnay have meant that she d(orated the house herselt rather than designed it. The name and background of this initial owner is now lost to history but frcm the photograph's noter we assume she was located in New England and since she was inviled toexhibit the dollhouse at the Danbury Faia we're in€lined to think she may have lived in southwestem Conne.ticut. By the time Dorothy acquired the contents and the fabulous dolls, the house and its extensive gardens were gone. Through patient effort, sheeventually located another Mansion on the W6t Coast, although it la.ked the removable front facades and a po.tion of roof. This did not concern her as she prefe[ed to display the house with its contents tully visible and she had slidinS glas panels constructed to fit over the open house to prot€ct its interior This hous€ differs somewhat from other Mansions known to €xist in that ihe kitchen is configured as one large room instead ol a smaller rcom with connectinS butler's pantry The h{o rooms above it are of equal siz€, as oppos€d to a larger nursery and smaller bathroom. Original built-in Ereplaces ae featured in the four prin.ipal rooms of lhe main s€ctiorl however the music room lacks the expected Rufus Porter style wall mural. Most Colonial Mansions have realistically molded d@r and window trims; this one has faux moldings caretully delineated with blue paint. One wondeE if the relative crudeneis of the house means that it was an early prctotype, or perhaps thehou* dates from the Depr€ssion or the waryea.s, when Tynietoy struggled to maintain the quality of its produ.tion. Fa.ed with i€orrring financial problemr war+ime shortages and the deaths of its founders in the 1940's, Tynietoy's survival into the early 1950's is really rather remarkable. The extensive turnishings consist of many original Tynietoy ptoducts, additional items imporcd from Germany, and a few piecs by other American companiG such as Hall's Lifetime Toys and Wisconsin Toy Company. Whethe. these items came wit]' the original collection or were added later by Dorcthy, is unknown. When Becky unpacked the house after its joumey from Califomia to Penrcylvania, she found its notable furnishings included eight o.iginal Tynieby folding soeens in extraordinariIy fine condition, an enviable numbe.of ra.e Windsor chairs and an assrtmenl of Grace Drayton watercolo6, which had be.n ommissioned especially for the nursery Oiherunusual and hiShly desirable items include two fouFposte.beds with turned posts (one isactually strung) as well as a rare comer chair, an elaborately tumed ladder back.hair and a pair oftables never shown in catalogue photor yet bearing the imprcd Tynietoy trademarkThe rooms were decorated with a truly Emarkable nu mber of hand'painted period portraits executed in oils, including a pair ofeleganl women in rare carved oval frames. Perhaps she executed rhe arrwork herself and then had Tynietoy frame them for her. The well-proportioned rooms of the house are filed with many erample. of familiar Tynieroy ilemr more ed\ily found by today's .ollectors. TheR are numerous demi-lune tabler Winthrcp desks, a very nice floor lamp
with a rare Betsy Ross *squicentennial lampshade, and a good aso.tment of painted wing chaire in pr€rty faur chintz pattems. The condition of many of the hand-painted pieces is astonishingly good, and the foldinS screens are particularly lovely. Not only are there several w h classic floral decorations, but one is painred with a map motit while another features unusual cartou.hes with hand-painted hunting scenes and is truly outsra.dinS. It was a ra.e pleasur€ and privilege for this write. 10 be invited to w the empty houe and its conrenrs orSanized and displayed on a table and then be asked to arranSe the tumishings in the rooms. Be assured, it was a challen8e to find space for all eight foldinS screens, but it was accomplishedl Yet the most pleasurable job was reserved for the proud n€w owner:arranging these very specialdolls in their relocated hom€.

here are other Tynietoy Colonial Mansions in museums and private ollechorc, and there are rare and much suSht-after wooden Peggity dolls in some of them. But as far we know, no otlrcr dollhous€ has an extended family and .etinue of s€rvants like the unique, handmade dolls custom-made for the onginal oMer back in the 1920's. Ther€ arc a total of fifteen of these beautifully proportioned and wondertully exe$ted dolls made of composition with wired joints. All reflect Sreat artistry and attention to detail, and it is difficult to imagin€ any other dous from this pe.iod which display so much character and charm.I was intrigued when I fiEt sw thm in the bla(k and white photographs in Ackerman's book and, at that time, I never expected to s€e them in pe.son. It was thdllinS to hold them in the palm of my hand, to discover their delicately tinled complo.ions and be able to t uly apprcciate the extraordinary detail in their attire, especially the
in(€dibly articulated sho6! I can't recall any other dollhous€ dolls with so much personali original owner wrote that they had been made by a "big wig" at the Smithsonian I6titute, but then crEator's name has never b€en asertained. This is truly a slEme, b€.aus€ whoever mad€ them des€rves to b€ acknowledsed and applauded for their talent and craftsmanship. They are exquisite and delightful. The rather large family.onsists of a stylishly attired mother in a twe€dy skirted s!it, two rather adult-looking teen'aged daughteE, a rcsponsibleolder daughter overs€€'n8 a pair of sisterr a pair of toddler boys and a pair ofbabies, all with distinct personalities and appropriately attired for the period. Sadly today as we giveway to the digital age, I am afraid dolls are not included on many ch'ldren's Christmas lists. id you ever want to witness Christmas celebrations as they were held in the "olden days?" I have alwaysbeen very curious about the past. Not that I w t to live in the past, but questions often arise as to how thinSs have changed, esp€cially if you are intemted in history as I am. When I was asked io help
with the special event, "Dollies' Holiday," at the President B€njamin Harnson Hone in Indianapolis, held frcm November2l tlrou8h D€cmbe.3,0, 2m5, I did not know that I would become so clrious that it would lead to res€arch and this article. My res€arch led not o.ly to Chnshas celebrations at the Harrison's home in Indianapolis, but also to the family's four years of Christmas celeb.ations in lhe White Hous€ as a sittin8 Peident and First Lady. Benamin Harrison w6 President of the United Stat6 fom 1689 to 1E92. He and the First Lad, Catolin€ Scott Harriso& and their extended family spent four holiday *asons in the White Hou*. The Christmas deorations each ye at the Harri$n Home include the Harrison family dollr and l.st year additional dolls were also borrcwed from vadous staff personnel, Iamily members and the lndiana State Museum. Dolls were displayed on the thi.d floo., downstairs amund lhe large Christrnas t.ee, and in the childr€n's nursery on the second floor A special event was or8anized on Saturday, Deemb€r 3rd with a tour of the home, refreshments and doll appraisals as a tundrai*r for the Harisn Home. My part was just to help with the app.aisalr which lvery much enioyed. When I entered lhe front doo. of the home, as the visitors all would do for the tour, the lar8e Christmas tree was imediately visible as it st in the aEhway betwen the f.ont pa.lor and the back p.rlol It was decorated with (ddles and period ohamenls as if the Harriens wer€ still livinS in this bealtiful home. Under the tree were several HaEison family dollr and a toy stable and everal pieces of child siz tumitur€ loaned by the Indiana State Museum. From the front parlor side of the tr€€ one could s€e three dolls, the toy stable, and a large tricycle. The largest doll was a 30" tall, blond Tete lumeau dressed in a fashionable long white dress and hat. A smaller doll dEs*d in a boy's pink satin suit, a lar8e German bisque doll sittinS in a toy sleigb and a doll's bed were displayed along with the stable and tricycle. The lase st ding Tete lumeau was awa'dd in 1889 to "8aby" Beniamin McKe, voted 'Th€ Most Popular Boy or Girl in Washington" in a contest sponsored by the Sunday Holold newspape. The three-year old grandson of President and Mrs. Harrison was said not to b€ too impr€ss€d with the dou. The contest was a lund rais€. for the Civil War Veterans Corporation. Mary Harrison McKee, the Presidenl's daughter and mother of Baby McK€e, in her aclnowledgem€nt letter to the Veterans Corporation said, "The doll was much admired by both my children, altholgh it is natural that Mary 6er young dauShter) should enjoy it mor€ than her bmther."

She was weanng an elaboraie cGtume of red and black with a black tur wrap md rnutr This doll was originally st to Ms. Harisf, by John Wanamalc. of the wammaker Department Store in Philadelphia as a way of showing her possible wardrob€ choic€s for herselt The doll was later given to the Fi.st l2dy by Mr Wanamaker This French beauty with bis{tue ams and hdds has a wardiobe of several more outfits that were displayed on a large doll bed from the State Museum. Ttey consist of a brown wool walking suit with matching hat, butbon shoes, brown kid glov6, pocketbook and fan, a pink mbe over a white ni8htSown with white heeled slipp€rs trirnmed in pinl silk with silk bows ed silver bu.kler and a partiality visible gEn velvet dress and hat with black shB. The doll also has tiffany mounted pearl earrings for her pierced ears. To the viewe6' riSh! in front of a .hild's toy dreser with mirror also from the State Mussum, was a small 5.5" blond German bisque head doll with a composition body which has molded and painted bla.k sho€s. She wears an offwhite silkhandmade dr€ss with lace tnm. She is another Harrison family doll. To the lelt of the Bru, sitting in a small chair, sat another doll from the Harrison collection with an unusual history. lt s€ems that this adorable 12" Tete rumeau in her original blue satin dresr hat, and shoes, was a Christmas

Visible behind the snow trEe was ihe Harison family cradle used by s€veral generations of Hani$n babis.ln a small doll cradle lay what is believed tobe Caroline S.ott Harrison's childhood doll, a beautiful, 16" blond Parian type bisque doll in her 6tted blue dr€ss. Ihe doll has a pink kid body with jointed ams and le8s. The story that came from the family is ihat this doll was Caroline's when sh€ was a child in Oxford, Ohio, circa 1840. Also in the nursery wer€ seve.al antique Geman bisque head dolls that had b€€n childhood toys of the Harri$n Srand.hildren. The 15" boy doll in his blue checked suit and straw hat was accornpanied by two more German Sirl dolls. One doll is a blond, brcwn eyed Sirnon & Halbig doll in a g@n wool dl6 t.immed in white s k nbbons and lace. She is appro,jmately 16" tall with ajoind composition body. A Cerman bisque shoulder head doll with bisque arms and with a blond wig and a kid body was wearing a lon8 white cotton dress. During the fou. years the Harrisons lived in the White House, as was the ostom at the time, many members of th€ir family lived with th€m. The first Christmas in 1889 that the Har.iBons spent in lhe White Hous€ was described in a lette. Mary Harrison M.Ke wrcte to her husband, who was away traveling. She tells of "pufting a few things in the children's stockings" for Beniamin "Baby" McKee and Mary, and lighting the candles on the Christmas Lre€ aboul l0:10 in lhe morning for drc family and all the white House employees and servants. The t@ was described as "a large gorgeous tR trimmed by the President, his family, and staff." It carned loys not only lor the children of lhe family, but for everyone attached to the Whit€ House and their families. It was reported lhat forty poinlettia plants were also used to decorate ihe i{hite House that year.

Christmas 1892 found little Beniamin at age fivs able to write a simple note of Merry Christmas to his Srandfa, ther, the P6idenl. Another news article reported the giandchildEn had al$ ben taught by tlteir Bovemess, Fraulein Hampe, to recite and write in German. "Baby" Eenjam'n McKee wrote a nine linc Chri.lmas merrage rn Cerman, but it is not clear in which year this was accomplished. The same undated article dNribes Mary's gifts as "a tull set of baby dolltumiture, with baby dollr lady dollc and boy doll:, shile Benjamin had a sream engine with a couple of train cars, a full suitofarmor, books, p'cturer and all mannerofthings to tickle a boy's fan€y." The White Hou* yed of the Harrisons ended on a tragic note when the Fi6t Lady, Caroline, died of tubercu, losis in lE92 before Christmas of that y.ar Thc PEident was so grief stri.ken at herlosr he did not campaign and subsequently was not relecd to a s€.ond term. An article in a publication of the time called "Youth," tells of the clo6e companionship betwen "8aby" M.Ke and his Srandfather, the P.esident. The President's daughter Mary or "Mamie," as she was known throughout her life, can be credited with preseoinS much ofher Mother's clothing, jewelry, and personal efiects. These items were late. pE*nted to the Harison Home after Mamie's death in 1930. Some of the small toiletries displayed on the child-sized dresser in the back parlorwere among these €ffects. The Harrien Home opened to the public in 1974 r00 years after the home was built. Asa visitor, it was gratifying to w how hard the staffand volunteers work to pree(e and keep the Presidmt Benjamin Harrison Home traditions alive and beautitully pEs€nted, not only at Christmas, but all year long-

Like I said....some things in life are iust meant to bel Over the course of a year and afte! a rrip of a few thousand miler this lovely, ancient little ltalian child is back on this side of the Atlantic and a treasure which gives me joy every day. I had an old frame made into a box with the hont able to hinge open and have lined it with dtiqueotlon velvel and hled *'e lrtUe lelloh , into it s€curely with a sling of ord tied at the front uder his 8oM. His crown is held hov enng over his lovely head by one bolt throuSh the box which neady fitted through a hole on &e back of rhe crown where one of the jeweled attachments was conveniently mising. this means he can b€ easily removed frcm his etting should I want to examine him or show his lovely artiolation to a fellow collector He is 20 inches tall, carved out of solid wood, whi.h has a lovely patina. He is fully arhculated wiih pe8 fixings into the smoothly operating joints. His pectoral and stomach mus€ulature is well defined as is the shoulder and hip area. Interestingly too, the hands arc not cared in an attitude of blessin8. The right hand with the thumb and index finget held together resembles a child in Iohn Darcy Noble's book Rn/e a"d Lo?ely. He postulated in his article that the hand was meant to hold a ro.e in honor ot \arnl Dorothy lhave thu.8i\en mv child a sweet antique silver pinof a rcsebud which has a rcal dried rose bud set into the silver stem. He would have probably been used in procession with his Mother at fiesta and reliSious festival times in the town o. vil laSe ofhis lNation.Italy or possibly Spain would be the most likely origin and ihe carver is obviously a master of his .raft. While it is sad that he has ultimately be€ome separated from his Mother, I am Brateful to have had the oppo. tunity to acqune this wonderful wooden whi.h had touched me so much and staved in mv heart lon8 alter he departed from \ew Yort.

Book Review: Les Poupees Royales by Frangois Theinter The noted doll expert Fransois Theimer has recently published 150 copies of a special deluxe volune entitled, Ls Polpees Roydes, a complete history of the French Royal Court Dolls and their history. The doll's late owner,John Darcy Noble, named the doll "Belinda the lrv.ly Cheat." A group ofdolls have gather€d to enjoy an afternoon tea. Like fine wine they have weathered the years with grace and endurance. Mary Cole a carton Bartholomew Bab, is our conSenial hostess; others pres€nt include Mary Devis, a wood€n bom around l75o; Eugenie, a very lovelv parian dating to 1850; an 1835papier mache; an even earlier wax; another wooden bom arcund 1795 in Austria and the youngestofthe group, Mathilde, once owned by Napoleon's niece.
When the lovely Belinda arrives, she is mistaken for another whose Mme is Melinda- The ladies do noi believe for one second that "Melinda" is as young as she claim. Mary Cole begins to tell the story of how Melinda came into being from, of allthings, an elm trelFrom the very beginninS Melinda's life was quite an adv€ntur€ - part ofa group of dolls that was stolen, she was forced to live "on the lam" until her thieves were apprehend€d. Purchased by a wealthy wornan for her youg niece, Belinda, aka Melinda, enioys a life of privileSe. But another of even hiSher station, wants her for then own. As you may know, Derroir is the sire for rhe 2007 National Doll Festiral, and site ofthe national doll conventions. The selection ofDetroit has caused some concerns for those considering attending. On recent visirs to Detroir for site inspections offacilities, quire frankly, I was surprised, and delighred with what I found! Downtown Detroit is quite impressive, and look a lot like San Francisco or Vancouver B.C.. The skyline is a scenic mix ofmodern, unique and clxsic archirecrure. The area where our evenr is located is rhe financial district, situated alonpide the Detroit fuver, with a splendid view of the river with 'tfindsor, Canada on the other side. Atmosphere in the area is well kept, pleasant, safe and inviting for walking about exploring the sighrs. The surrounding neighborhoods have much to offer, including: sidewalk cafes, international cuisine, galleries, businesses, banking, shopping, rheatres, symphony, opera, baller, sporrs arenas, ourdoor music & casinos. Toy shoppe. latest Edith dolls. Dare's mother, Edith St€venson WriSht, and Erook's mother b€came litulong friends wheh they both appeared in a pisduction of "Pride and Prejudice." As a surpnse for her eighth birthday, Dare WriSht gave Brook an elaborate party wilh 8u6ts Edith the lrnely Doll and her friends Mi Bear and Little Bear. Thes€ were left to Ms. Ashley upon Dare Wright's death in 2001.
