history and countless searches, co-owners ofThe Geman Doll Company, Susan Bickert and Roland Schlegel have discovered many tu.n of the.entury molds including many of ihe rare molds used for Rose O'Neill's filst production of Kewpies. They a.e currently licenred worldwide by JESCO foi the production of bisque Kewpie dolls and figuines made

Fortunately, &ere was ample spa@ in its three lalge attics to store the figurine molds, and luckily the factory never suffered a major fire. Iollowing &e wa., the East German govement ordered the mmpany to make beer steins d vases, and the old molds remained forgotten and untouched in the atti6.

Arnong the thousands of molds dis.ove.ed in the old por.elain fa.tory's three attics were the original molds for Kewpier half dolls, bathing beauties, mermaids, powder boxes and pertume flacons even the original rat-like Mickey Mouse made in the 1920s and hiShly prized by today's collectore.

The company was established in 1885 by Emst Kmer and Franz Reinlardt in waltershaus€a Thurinda Gemany.

Kamm€r was a scllpto. md inventor and Reinh dt was a salesman and business administrator. By lhe early 20th century mo6t dols had the tfical weighted sl€ep eye medanism dlat caus€d drc eyes to clo6e when the doll was laid down. K star R's naughty chil4 howev€a did not alwayB go to sleep when put to bed. when K std R reBistercd Der Unart as a trademark in 1915 their dffiiphon of this new doll state4 "ff you tum me to the ri8ht, you wil shout at me. The naughty chnd will imm€diately stan sleeping if you tuh me to the left. I wil lay down then and b€ a good boy."

The eye mechanism Ior fiis doll was covered by DRP 295 876 (DRP is the d6ignation uled for a Gemm patent) taken out by the company in 1915. This patent b for a "dol head with slepiry €yeB and locking d€vise 60r a$itrary use." The locking devise mention€d in the pat€nt was a small metal F8 in a rylinder atta.hd wilh plastc. to lhe inner l€ft side of the head. when th€ doll is tumed to the right lhe peg proj€cts out of the cytinder baring the way of lhe counter weight ot the eye thereby keeping it open when Ihe doll is laid down. When the dol is tumed to the left the pe8 retlacts and lhe eyes doe normaUy. jointed dol md in no way resembles the highly p.ized chdacter doll which Louis Amberg & Son would offer for sale in 1921.

While the cover of this book is quite attractive, the illustrationt whi.h were originaly desiSned for the newspaper feature, do not lend themselves as wetl for the bmk ln su4 it d@s not help explain why Amberg was willing to c.eate not only one, but two dolls: a Phyllis May doll dresed in m identical sstume 6 the real little girl of newspaper tuature md book and Mibs. while only one reference was located Ior the Amberg Phyllis May dou in a Playt i,8s ad ofluly 1921, Mibs was heavily advertised, and by lue 1921, had made it onto the front page coler of Playrhings ma5azine and was .alled "The Doll Of The Year." Apparently, iust like Grae Storey Putnam's Bye Lo Baby, which would shortly follow, Mibs was enthusiasti.ally Meived by the doll buyinA publi., even though no previous related suc.eses weE known. One would not call Mibs beautiful. She dc not have the regular f€atures of the ever popular "dolly faces." We s€e a sensitive little face that is tumed slightly to one side and lowered somewhat. Her short hair sh/le is simple but distinguished, and her legs, with knes slightly pushed through and right t@ tumed in, emphasize rhe pensive mood of a seemingly real little Birl. The Lenci Company was founded in 1919 and the trademark was applied for to p.oduce dollr tumiture, toys, clothing and ac.essries for children. By 1922" the .ompany was in tull production making dollr toyr clothing for childre4 acessories, shoes, slipperr hats, belts, hou*hold articles, clrtainr and even wooden tumituie wiih gilding. The Lenci dous were always admired as art objects and thus, in alt probabilib/, were not played with.

However the accessories were most ]ikely used by those that purcha*d them. The paper tags were removed so that today, these acessories tend to te ve.y elusive dd hard to positively identify.

The easiest items to find are the purses. The .lown pure is particularly interesting because of the face mold used.Itmeasures about 8" tall (not including the handle). The hea4 hands and feet are shrffed and the

body is hollow with a zipper i. the ba.k for a.@ss. This clown pu.se was made using a rare head mold. The only other dolls known with this head were on the Lenci "Pan" and "Devil" dolls.

The little pertume bottle measures less than 3 inches tall. This bottle was once filled with pertume and still has its onginal label, which is not enti.ely readable. The part that can be read says: "Bouquet" but there is anoiher word before bouquet that has been obscured. The second

The perfume distributor is not as important to us as the l,enci head that is on the top ofthe bottle.It is very likely that the lcn i Company was uder contract to make the heads for these pertume bottles. The face is made of molded felt with the features painted meti€ulously.

The tiara is made from lavender pipe .lemel' whi€h are sewn to her head. Ribbons and flowers are then added. This is the type of tiny ac@ssory that can easily be overlooked at a show.

The petite little Dutch girl is a Lenci Company nystery. It is believed to be m advertisitrB pr€mium but we have not identiJied exactly what she was used for. Her apron is printed with the wordsi "Ye Olde Tyme Comfort Shoes" written in the old Engtish style, which seems to indicate it was probably made (or a British compmy to

Perhaps she was tle cover for a jar of she polistr possibly given away to the customer when a pai. of shoes was purchased. the other thing tlat comes to mind is tlat sh€ miSht be a tea cozy for a .hild's size teapoi, which would certainly fit with the thought tlat the piece was made for the British market.

This tiny doll is definitely a wondettul Lenci piece for anyone *eking thes€ elusive ac.essories.
