history and countless searches, co-owners ofThe Geman Doll Company, Susan Bickert and Roland Schlegel have discovered many tu.n of the.entury molds including many of ihe rare molds used for Rose O'Neill's filst production of Kewpies. They a.e currently licenred worldwide by JESCO foi the production of bisque Kewpie dolls and figuines made

from these original molds. Recently they purchased 30,000-plus mold! from the former company of Weist Knhnert & Compan, Iounded in 1891, in Grafenthal, (Easi) Germany. Iollowing &e wa., the East German govement ordered the mmpany to make beer steins d vases, and the old molds remained forgotten and untouched in the atti6. Arnong the thousands of molds dis.ove.ed in the old por.elain fa.tory's three attics were the original molds for Kewpier half dolls, bathing beauties, mermaids, powder boxes and pertume flacons even the original rat-like Mickey Mouse made in the 1920s and hiShly prized by today's collectore.

The company was established in 1885 by Emst Kmer and Franz Reinlardt in waltershaus€a Thurinda Gemany. Kamm€r was a scllpto. md inventor and Reinh dt was a salesman and business administrator. The tust innovahon brought lo th€ ma.k€tplac€ by lhis team was a method for atraching the elastic stlinAing material !o th€ piec€s of doll Hies. Their method employed the us€ of hooks as oppos€d to lhe psious method of gluing the elastic into the Hy partr. This mad€ restringinS of t}le dols much easie!. Tte Kammer and Reinhardt factory assembled ed sold complete doll$ they did not manufacture thei! om porc€lain heads. It is believed that the earliest heads the compey used were made for them by the C F KIinS Company of Ohrdruf . Apparently, iust like Grae Storey Putnam's Bye Lo Baby, which would shortly follow, Mibs was enthusiasti.ally Meived by the doll buyinA publi., even though no previous related suc.eses weE known. One would not call Mibs beautiful. She dc not have the regular f€atures of the ever popular "dolly faces." We s€e a sensitive little face that is tumed slightly to one side and lowered somewhat. The Lenci Company was founded in 1919 and the trademark was applied for to p.oduce dollr tumiture, toys, clothing and ac.essries for children. By 1922" the .ompany was in tull production making dollr toyr clothing for childre4 acessories, shoes, slipperr hats, belts, hou*hold articles, clrtainr and even wooden tumituie wiih gilding. The Lenci dous were always admired as art objects and thus, in alt probabilib/, were not played with. However the accessories were most ]ikely used by those that purcha*d them. The paper tags were removed so that today, these acessories tend to te ve.y elusive dd hard to positively identify. The .lown pure is particularly interesting because of the face mold used.Itmeasures about 8" tall (not including the handle). The hea4 hands and feet are shrffed and the

The little pertume bottle measures less than 3 inches tall. This bottle was once filled with pertume and still has its onginal label, which is not enti.ely readable. The part that can be read says: "Bouquet" but there is anoiher word before bouquet that has been obscured. The second
