Introduction This 37th catalogue presents our collection of 140 portraits dating from before 1620. The portraits were acquired by Ab van der Steur over a period of thirty years. The works are listed in alphabetical order, by name of the engraver. There is one exception, namely the collection of portraits from the series Pictorum aliquot celebrium, præcipué Germaniæ Inferioris, effigies which is listed according to the order proposed in The New Hollstein (Hondius). As title we used the transcriptions of the texts in the prints themselves or, in case missing, the given title in the most relevant literature. The prints contain brief descriptions of the subject and, where relevant, the transcription of their texts. Each print’s technique, support, measurements, state and condition are described in detail according to the reference literature. The literature list is provided at the end of the catalogue. Each item has a specific catalogue number (IDnumber) which can be used to order the prints or to find the corresponding picture in the catalogue or on our website. Special attention has been paid to the marks on the prints deriving from previous owners. As collectors play a fundamental role in the life of prints, wherever possible their names are given according to the Lugt database. The portraits in this catalogue originate either from publications or from single sheet portraits on paper. The first category contains a great number of portraits of famous Dutch and Flemish artists by Simon Frisius and Hendrick Hondius. They are taken almost entirely from the above mentioned 1610 edition of the Pictorum aliquot… which was an extended and revisited copy of Hyeronymus Cock’s 1572 edition. Very remarkable is the Portrait of Jean Francois le Petit dressed in armour which was included as a second frontispiece to La grande chronique ancienne et moderne. The second category includes Callot’s Portrait of Claude Deruet with his son Henry Nicolas, in its fourth state. The original drawing is at the Louvre. In this print, the French engraver skillfully transfers the vivid gaze of the man from drawing to print, lending him a highly dignified appearance in his almost theatrical pose. The single sheet portraits also include three versions of portraits of Jan van Zuren, burgomaster and printer in Haarlem. Two of these are by the hand of Goltzius and the third is an anonymous copy in reverse. Both in the second and the third states, the impressive skills of the Dutch master are recognizable in the rendering of the scant thin hair on the burgomaster’s head and in the soft fur of his jacket. The catalogue shows the complete series of the Three portraits of historical figures by Jan Muller, all in their latest states. Anna Bianco

Passe, Crispijn van de I (15641637) Portrait of Carel Utenhove. 1595. Beautiful half-length portrait of Carel Utenhove, humanist from Gent, later also burgomaster of the city. De Passe was his intimate friend since his stay in Cologne. 'Matthias Quad has left an excellent account of Carel Utenhove, relating that he was a linguistic genius. [...] Utenhove died in 1600 at the age of 64, and the city council allowed him to be borne to the Protestant cemetery outside the city walls followed by a solemn procession of nobles and scholars. Utenhove’ s verses are found on De Passe' s prints from 1591 to 1600, so he was his first contributor. He usually signed with the Latinised form of his name, but sometimes with the Greek one, and occasionally supplied poems for allegories, such as the 'Anthropomorphooseoos eikones' or 'The ages of man'(1599) [...] In 1595, De Passe drew and engraved Utenhove’ s portrait in his honour ('Honoris ipsius causa dipingebat...'). The likeness was later copied in a silver medallion by Simon de Passe, probably as a present for one of Utenhove’ s relatives. There are two Latin poems on the portrait. One is by the Neo-Latin poet Paul Melissus, the other an encomium by the well-known Heidelberg physician and scholar Johannes Posthius which echoes the figure of speech introduced by Dürer and widely applied in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, namely that a portrait may reproduce someone's outer appearance but cannot record

his spirit. A person's spirit, which lives on his work, is regarded as the best part of a human being, not his physical appearance. Posthius's verse expressed this idea as follows: 'In this print one sees what was mortal: / The eloquent mouth and face of Utenhove. / The image of his spirit, expressed in his learned books, / Will survive all ages, immortal.' [...].In 1595, the year in which the portrait was engraved, Utenhove sent it to the Antwerp historian Emanuel van Meteren in London, who pasted both the print and the covering letter into his album amicorum.'
