A Polar Landscape amidst Marble Sculptures

The Belgrade-born artist Bojan Šarčević provoked much discussion with his installation “Sentimentality Is the Core”, which we presented in our Skylight Gallery during this year’s Art Parcours. The installation consisted of three commercial freezers fitted with an audio component and positioned amongst our Greek and Roman sculptures. The freezers were switched on, causing tiny changes to the airflow in the museum. Inside the freezers, polar landscapes made of ice crystals took shape. The formal dissonance between these ice formations and the ancient marble sculptures could not have been greater: contrasted with the hard marble, the frozen sculptures seemed weirdly out of place, evoking, in equal measure, Minimalism, an abandoned supermarket and contemporary sarcophagi.

Bei wunderbar sommerlichen Temperaturen genossen Persönlichkeiten aus ganz Europa die Gastfreundschaft des Antikenmuseums Basel.

As hosts of the official “Art Parcours 2022 Reception”, we also entertained over 200 experts, journalists and art lovers in our Bistro. Personalities from all over Europe enjoyed the hospitality of the Antikenmuseum Basel in wonderful summer temperatures.
