FEMA PLANS TO REIMBURSE FAMILIES FOR COVID-19 RELATED FUNERALS Last week it was announced that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will provide funeral assistance for deaths associated with the COVID-19 pandemic.

It has been widely reported that FEMA plans to reimburse families up to $7,000 for certain qualified COVID-19 related funeral, cremation, and burial costs including, but not limited to, interment, burial plots/cremation niches. The funding will be available for qualified costs incurred between January 20, 2020, and December 31,2020.

According to a recent Congressional press conference, Congress will attempt to extend

the funding to funerals taking place in 2021, although that is not final or guaranteed.

FEMA will publish details about qualifications and how families can apply for reimbursement in the near future. A general program overview published by the Congressional Research Service is available online.

When the final program details are released, our funeral home team will be prepared to assist families we have served to help them access and apply for the program reimbursement and complete other final arrangements.

6 . 2 0 2 1 M U N I C I PA L BUDGET the State Division of Local Government Services has notified municipalities that the Local Finance Board has modified the statutory dates for introduction and adoption of municipal budgets for Cal-

endar Year 2021. The statutory date for the introduction and approval of the budget has been changed from February 10, 2021 to March 30, 2021. The statutory date for budget adoption has been changed from March 20, 2021 to April 30, 2021.

The municipal budget was introduced this evening and Councilmembers have received their detailed 2021 budget.

Budget Subcommittee meetings with councilmembers will be scheduled in early March with public hearing and (hopefully) adoption of the municipal budget on March 23, 2021.

7. CDBG SMALL BUSINESS GRANT – ROUND 2; the second round of the CDBG Small Business Grant Program has been extended through Friday March 5, 2021. We are urging all small businesses within Old Bridge Township that have been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic to

8. MOODY’S AFFIRMED the Township of Old Bridge’s credit rating as excellent. Its Aa1 rating is stronger than the US city median rating of

ALEXA DEVICES DECREASE ISOLATION, KEEP RCH ASSISTED LIVING RESIDENTS CONNECTED

The ongoing pandemic has certainly isolated the elderly from their friends and family members, but Reformed Church Home has adopted voice technology, in collaboration with a local vendor, to keep their assisted living residents connected in creative ways. The

Home has also announced that, for a limited time, new assisted living residents will receive an Echo Show HD Smart Device upon move-in to allow video calling and a variety of other features using voice commands.

Following receipt of a donation in 2020 from Morganville-based

Speak2 Software, all assisted living residents at RCH have been offered a free Alexa device for use in their apartments. The devices allow residents to ask typical Alexa questions, such as weather updates or music selections. But special features developed by Speak2 Software, along with their proprietary app intended for family members, provide significant benefits to keep the elderly connected to younger generations.

These benefits include recitation of daily menus or activity schedules upon resident request, and the ability to make phone calls via voice command (once phone numbers are registered).

Moreover, with the Speak2 Family app, family members added to the senior’s “Circle of Trust” can send text messages or recordings to their loved one’s device, receive requests from the senior, or get activity updates.

Amazon Alexas (Echo Dots) were gifted to RCH via a partnership between Speak2 Software

and Amazon, while RCH covers the small monthly fee per user related to the proprietary services. According to Matt Smith, CEO of Speak2 Software, the elderly often become frustrated with smart phones and other modern devices because lower tactile and visual sensors make tapping or swiping difficult.

Speak2 Software was created to serve this unmet need by making voice technology easy and accessible. “Seniors have embraced Amazon Alexas because it’s easy for them to interact with their voice and a few simple commands,” he said.

Based on the success of this program, RCH is offering a free Echo Show HD Smart Device (see representative photo) for a limited time so that new residents can enjoy video calling while taking advantage of the other valuable Speak2 features. The question is who Steve Mamakas determines if a business prospers. There are many factors that come in to play. Is it the owner or the customer? It may really come down to the customer alone whose willingness to pay for a good or for a service which converts into longevity, creation of jobs and wealth for the business. At first glance definition “What is a Business” management, tasks, responsibilities and practices. Business is an art as well as a science at times. It’s a matter of practical experience, judgment, solutions, foresight and some luck. Profit

is not the explanation, cause, or rationale of business behavior and business decisions, but rather the test of their willingness to keep driving forward. No matter who is at the helm of the business, they would still have to be concerned with profitability, despite any lack of personal interest in making profits in some cases. It’s about survival and even more during tough times like all are facing now. Vision: plays a key role a well, a defined vision is a skill or gift that every company leader needs in order to cross the finish line. It will be the major force behind an entrepreneur’s success and will serve as a compass in tough times. A startup needs to envision how to monetize from the very beginning. Overall businesses must create value. As in our last article, it’s also about value. Consumer Value: Attitudes & behaviors, quality of product or service

that effects choice, frequency and loyalty to visit the business.

Cultural Value: shared beliefs that create a favorable environment in which to operate and influence the consumer. Businesses must use strategies and decided what levers to pull, that ladder up to a positive impact on the consumer and business.

All this is either understood or learned as entrepreneur’s steps in the ring of operating a business.

They are not merely suggestions!

Being citizens of a republic, one is expected to be watchful and wary of their leaders, that they do not deviate from the guiding documents. Each citizen is to hold authorities accountable, even to the point of rebellion if needed.

Today in America, many have this reversed. They have become subjects, rather than citizens, of the government.

Christians quote Romans 13 as if what was meant for believers in a dictatorship applies the same in a republic. They view themselves as citizens of God’s Kingdom, yet selectively

decide what they feel like doing in regard to His moral laws.

And though America is not under the Lord by direct covenant like Israel, America was established with a foundation steeped in biblical principles.

When George Washington was sworn into office, he swore on a Bible opened to Deuteronomy 28. That chapter is all about the blessings and curses that would come upon Israel as they followed, or did not follow, God. No question America was indeed blessed. This nation grew and prospered more than all nations of the world combined. But now, having rejected the Bible and God as a nation, is it possible we are beginning to experience the turmoil and deconstruction typified in the curses of Deuteronomy 28:28? “The Lord will strike you with madness and blindness and confusion of heart.”

We were once able to reason, but people rarely ask anymore, “What do you think about this or that?” Now they ask, “What do you feel about that?”

Now a person can “feel” that they’re trapped inside the body of a different gender and— Poof!

It is scientifically so. All rational thought put aside, we are

commanded to be subject, and cannot object for our sons and daughters who must participate in this fantasy from Kindergarten on. Is this not madness?

As citizens we could object to this. We could object to our children being mandated to receive seventy vaccinations before their eighteenth birthdays, void of “Big Pharma” liability. As subjects, there is no opting out. Madness!

Major governments around the world all seem to be operating under the same spirit, with politicized medicine negating doctors’ common-sense care for their patients—people they know better than anyone. Madness!

Has a curse come upon America? It would appear that God may be behind this judgment, and at least, He is definitely allowing it! Look at all that has happened from 9/11 to the unprecedented “natural” disasters now devastating us. This unending “pandemic” has become a useful mechanism to bring “subjects” to their knees. The average American believes, despite the constant drumbeat of the media, that the election results were rigged—and as subjects, not citizens, there is no recourse.

One cannot even question what

their own eyes have seen or their mind clearly knows without being censored or canceled.

Do we have freedom of religion, speech, press…...really?

My prediction is that the most aggressive weaponizing of the government against the church will pick up where it left off four years ago. And God will not stop it. Why? B ecause persecution has ne ver hur t t he t r ue church, but purified her.

There will be an estimated 300 million Christians in communist China by the end of the decade.

Hitler gave us Bonhoeffer.

Perhaps we need a Sanballat and Tobia, mocking and opposing God, to strengthen Nehemiah. Perhaps we need a Haman, threatening extinction, to raise up an Esther. God has always used a Pilate, a Herod, and a Judas to bring about His ultimate plan! When has it ever been easy for those who hold fast to God against the tide of unbelief?

When have great people ever been raised up in easy times?

Natural sentiments may have rescued David earlier. I would not have allowed Joseph to be sold as a slave. I would have stopped the terrible persecu-

tion that put Moses in a basket, set afloat to save his life. But without them, great deliverances would not have come!

Does not God show Himself powerful, strengthening and deepening His people, during the most difficult times? I would suggest Psalm 37 as a pill in these times. Let us “fret not because of evildoers.” Let our reaction be not anger and frustration, but bold confidence and faith. Every stroke of the pen with record-setting executive orders guarantees judgment.

We know it will not be easy before our deliverance comes— but we know that it will come!

Unfortunately, average American-Christian culture has been intoxicated by a worldly “hopeium,” believing evildoers will be exposed and then we can all go back to our slumber.

But let us not sleep! Let us pity the rich, powerful, elite of this world, who are sadly blind and in danger of eternal judgment.

Let us share the love and hope of the Gospel, that in believing on the Lord Jesus one may be saved from this perverse generation!

There will be no in-person registration at this time. All students must be pre-registered to attend in the Fall. The pre-registration link can be found on the district home page at https://www.oldbridgeadmin. org. The completion of the pre-registration will be used to hold your spot by date and time.

At the end of the pre-registration, before clicking on “Submit to District”, you must download the Kindergarten 2021-2022 packet. Instructions on how to complete the forms are included in the packet. Please make sure you have made a copy of all original documents and reviewed the checklist. Do not send any original documents.

After the packet is completed, you can scan the documents

as a pdf file to centralregistration@obps.org , mail, or drop all documents in an envelope with your child’s name and school on it, effective March 1.

Individual images of documents will not be accepted. To scan, you can download a free app called ScanPro on your phone to create the pdf file. For anyone not submitting documents via email, all envelopes are to be dropped off at the Patrick A. Torre Administration Building, 4207 Highway 516, Matawan, NJ 07747. When entering the building do not proceed through the second set of doors. Registration packets should be dropped in the orange bin, which is located in the lobby.

CALVARY OLD BRIDGE SUPPORTS PARENTAL RIGHTS IN EDUCATION Calvary Old Bridge will be hosting an informational session with Family Policy Alliance of New Jersey on Sunday, March 28 at 6pm to raise awareness of NJ State legislation impacting education. The gathering is a call to action to get the word out to families regarding public school curriculum that infringes on the Constitutional rights of parents and students to freedom of conscience.

Shawn Hyland, Executive Director of Family Policy Alliance of New Jersey will be discussing changes in public school curriculum that conflicts with the religious convictions of many families.

The goal of the gathering is to inform parents and mobilize the community to get involved in school curriculum issues and work to remedy the state legislature’s violation of constitutional and religious rights

and take control of their child’s education. Family Policy Alliance will be informing parents of current NJ State legislation that aims to protect parental rights. In particular, Shawn Hyland will be discussing Assembly Bill 3000 and Senate Bill 3002 which provides that public school parents who object to learning materials or activity that a parent considers harmful may receive a voucher from the school district to enroll the student in a non-public school.

PIGS ARE SMART, BUT DOGS CAN DO IT ALL

Dr. Anita Greenberg and her husband, Dr. Daniel Belli, are the owners and operators of the East Brunswick Animal Hospital for more than 30 years. Dr. Greenberg has been a member of the Old Bridge Township Council since 2016 I am often asked, “Which animal is more intelligent, a pig or a dog?”

It is documented that pigs are smarter than any other domesticated animal, and they are considered by animal experts to be more trainable than dogs.

Pigs trail only chimps, dolphins and elephants in terms of intelligence in the animal kingdom.

Pigs are able to solve problems.

They are skilled at mazes and other tests requiring location of

objects, and they have excellent long-term memory and object location memory. They are capable of playing video games, and they can be taught tricks.

But, when I think of all the things that dogs have done to make the world a better place, it is difficult to think of them as less intelligent than pigs.

Think of Seeing Eye guide dogs, who have profoundly made a positive change for the visually impaired, allowing them to have a better quality of life.

They help the blind navigate through the world, and they have excellent temperaments. I have not witnessed pigs with this skill.

Dogs assist police, the military and other law enforcement personnel. They are used for searching for drugs and explosives, locating missing people, and locating crime scene evidence.

A dog’s sense of smell is somewhere between 10,000 to 100,000 times more acute than humans.

They are used in the apprehension of suspects and, when

necessary, as attack dogs. They function as guard dogs to secure locations and control prisoners.

Search and rescue dogs have saved lives and assisted in finding people lost in the wilderness or during natural disasters. They have been known to find people trapped beneath collapsed structures, under water and under snow. Labrador retrievers are the most common breed used.

Herding dogs, especially Border collies, are used worldwide to work with sheep, cattle and alpacas.

Service dogs help to make better the lives of their human companions, assisting their owners both physically and emotionally. Golden retrievers are the most common breed used in this function.

Hunting dogs have been working with humans for centuries and developed specialties. Labrador retrievers are used for hunting and retrieving water fowl. German shorthair pointers and English springer

spaniels flush birds. Beagles are the best for rabbit hunting.

Foxhounds are suited for fox and deer. For hog hunting, the Dogo Argentino and Catahoula Leopard dog are the choice. For sledding, the Alaskan husky is the breed most in demand.

Dogs, naturally attentive to sound, are alert and ready to work in an instant and used with people who have hearing deficiency. They alert their owners with a nudge in response to important sounds like a smoke alarm, a doorbell, an alarm clock, telephone, or a crying baby.

They serve as their master’s ears.

Dogs have a sensitive sense of smell. This can be useful in the medical world to sniff out diseases such as cancer, detecting the odor in the skin, urine or sweat.

to protect the person having the seizure and can activate an alarm. They will also protect the person seizing from falling by the way they position themselves.

Medical investigators are exploring the possibility of using dogs as a reliable way to pre-screen people for Covid-19.

Her grandchildren still have the sweaters she knitted for them and there are a number of children that were bestowed hand knitted hats that she made for babies in the local hospital.

Theresa loved Christmas Eve and

every year would make her infamous perciatelli pasta dish with red sauce and toasted breadcrumbs to serve to her family.

She was known for her knack in home decorating. Theresa will be sorely missed by all those who knew and loved her.

She was preceded in death by her father, Marcello Peragine, mother, Francesca LaRusso, daughter, Donna Perrotta, Brothers, Ralph, Michael, Nicholas, and John, sister, Antoinette, sister, Rose.

EXERCISE IS FOR EVERYBODY - INCLUDING YOU.

We all know that exercise is important for good overall health and wellness. The CDC and countless other resources have cited the importance of physical activity in reducing and preventing chronic disease.

Now, perhaps more than ever, the pandemic has taught us that we don’t need expensive gym memberships, or the inconvenience of going there, to find creative ways to exercise and be healthier from the comfort of our own home or by simply going outside. Many fitness companies have been at the forefront of creating attractive products designed for the consumer of more convenient, social, fun and interactive ways to exercise at home. The caveat is, they can also be expensive and as much as they would like you to believe that their product, service or app is appropriate for you, because that’s good for business, it may not be. So how do you know where and how to start?

Perhaps most importantly, how do you know if you are healthy enough to start exercising? To answer these questions let’s

tackle what in my experience has been the most common barriers to proper exercise habits.

Time is our most precious resource and most of us are spread pretty thin in this area. The CDC recommends that we perform approximately 20 minutes of moderate intensity exercise per day or a total of 150 minutes in a week. Some people may find that 20 minutes is a reasonable and realistic investment of time for improved health. For some though, finding 20 minutes can be daunting. I think it’s important to keep in mind that you can also do two sessions of 10 minutes in a day or perhaps only exercise three days a week and have longer sessions. My point is there can be a lot of flexibility and there are many ways that you can accomplish this goal. Be creative and even if you fall out of your routine, don’t overthink it and just get back on the horse.

What if you don’t like to exercise? Well, you’re not alone.

Many people share that same sentiment. What’s important is that you get your heart rate up and move - that’s all you need.

Start by thinking about something you like to do. Do you like to listen to music? Great!

Make a new playlist and go for a moderate paced walk while you listen. Or you may like to dance? Sounds good! Just put on some good music, and make sure you dance for at least 10 minutes at a moderate intensity.

What if you want to exercise but you don’t know how? There are many online resources that can teach you some basic movements and modes of exercise.

What’s important is that you choose the right one for you.

There are many considerations when selecting the mode or type of exercise. For example, if you are an untrained individual and will be exercising for the first time you’ll want to choose carefully so as to not develop bad habits, improper movement patterns, or potentially predispose yourself to injury. Your Doctor of Physical Therapy can also help introduce and teach you some basic exercises to get you started on the right path.

How do you know if you are healthy enough to exercise? Con-

sulting with a Doctor of Physical Therapy can help you determine if you are healthy enough for exercise, what exercises to perform, how to perform them properly, and how to progress them once you are ready. The short answer is that most people are healthy enough to participate in some form of exercise so long as they choose the right parameters ie. frequency, duration, intensity, form. Figuring that out on your own can be tricky. We recommend that you see your Doctor of Physical Therapy for 4-6 sessions to get you on the right track and perhaps once every two weeks thereafter.

Keys to success. Proper sleeping habits, hydration, stretching, and nutrition are critical but if you haven’t exercised before, it’s best to avoid making too many dramatic changes at once. You’ll be more successful implementing positive lifestyle changes by doing so gradually and reasonably. Setting small, attainable goals will help keep you motivated and on a successful path of health and wellness.

OLD BRIDGE PUBLIC LIBRARY In these challenging times, I think about Stephen King’s quote, “Books are a uniquely portable magic” and take some comfort in that magic. The Old Bridge Public Library is loaning portable magic to the community in the form of books, audio books, playaways, films and other media. While the public still must request this material online or over the phone, we are delivering it curbside to patrons with hundreds of pickups each month. We are also offering appointments for passport application acceptance, notarizations, and offer printing services via email request. Our website at oldbridgelibrary. org provides information as to how to use these services and make appointments.

While we are closed for walkins by the public, we are increasing virtual programming efforts. Our Facebook and online calendar promote these virtual programs.

On February 20 and 21 we are partnering with the Mosaic Society of Old Bridge to offer two virtual programs for Black History

Month. On March 10, there will be a Zoom antique roadshow from 2 to 4 p.m. Zoom signin information for these and other programs is listed on our Facebook page. In addition, we are working on monthly activity and book kits for kids which will be themed by holiday, events and seasons. FOUR OLD BRIDGE SCHOOLS NAMED 2021 NJ STATE SCHOOLS OF CHARACTER Character.org, a national advocate and leader for character, named four Old Bridge Township Public Schools 2021 New Jersey State Schools of Character (NJSOC). Each will maintain this status for a period of five years, through 2026. They are Leroy Gordon Cooper Elemen-

tary School, Virgil I. Grissom Elementary School, Alan B. Shepard Elementary School, and Carl Sandburg Middle School.

Each school’s score sheet has been forwarded to Character.org for consideration in the National Schools of Character program.

Each year, schools and districts are selected that demonstrate through a rigorous evaluation process that their focus on character development has had a positive impact on academic achievement, student behavior, and school climate.

Selected schools are then expected to serve as models for other schools, helping them to achieve the same results.

Assistant Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Hoeker expressed her excitement over the news. She is a former principal of the Alan B. Shepard School, the Old Bridge School District’s first National School of Character, and she has led teams to bring character education to the district’s 11 elementary schools, two middle schools, and high school.

“At a time when there is so much uncertainty, it is validating to our staff and students to receive State recognition and recertification for our schools of character,” said Hoeker. “The core values consistently embedded throughout our schools are the foundation that drive our students and staff to do more to serve one another and promote overall well-being for the greater good.”
